The Complete Guide to the 2013 Zachary Arts & Music Festival The 7th annual Zachary Arts & Music Festival, presented by the Zachary Chamber of Commerce and Abita Brewery, will be held March 21–24 on the grounds of BREC’s Community Park, 20055 Old Scenic Hwy. There will be as many as 100 regionally and locally renowned artists selling their work, incredible food vendors, a petting zoo and pony rides, paddleboards on the lake, a rock wall, bungee bounce, mechanical bull, gyroscope and many more activities for all ages to enjoy. The evenings will come alive with musical entertainment. Festival Director Megan Andrews explained that there are several new developments this year that provide additional fun for festival attendants. In the first place, the cultural elements of the festival will be enhanced by an increased focus on regional artisans, culinary flavors and music. Local bands such as the Todd O’Neil Band, Chee Weez, Randy Houser and the Not4Sale band will entertain crowds during the evenings while local entertainment will be provided throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. In partnership with BREC, there will also be a free Children’s Village

designed to entertain and instruct even the youngest of festival goers. The Village fill feature various inflatables, stand-up paddle lessons, kayak lessons, a youth children’s area (6 and under), a Kiddie Village (5 and under), a Family Game Station and an Active Play Zone. “We look forward to a fun, family oriented event with a new festival designed to have families affordably and comfortably stay all weekend to enjoy a true community atmosphere,” said Andrews. For those who like the VIP treatment, a ticket ($20 in advance, $30 at the entrance) will buy you a spot under the tent in front of the main stage at the Kick Off Party, Friday, March 22 from 5:30–7 p.m. LeBlanc’s Supermarket will provide a large variety of wines and light refreshments and Abita Brewery will serve beer. The event, excepting the carnival rides and the Kick Off Party, is completely free. The carnival will open on Thursday, but the event will launch with opening ceremonies on Friday, March 22. The public is asked to leave their ice chests at home; however, lawn chairs and blankets are welcome. For more information, visit www. zfest.us.

LeBlanc’s Offering Scholarships to Graduating High School Students The LeBlanc family established a scholarship program through the Baton Rouge Area Foundation in 2001. The program was created in honor of M. Paul LeBlanc, one of the owners of LeBlanc’s Food Stores, and his wife, Janice. Each year the LeBlanc family awards up to six $500 scholarships to graduating high school students to assist with their college education. Scholarship winners must reside in the parishes in which LeBlanc’s Food Stores operate: Ascension, Assumption, Iberville, Livingston, Tangipahoa and the city of Zachary.
The Scholarship Advisory Committee will look at the following criteria: leadership, community service and extracurricular activities, grade point average, ACT or SAT score, acceptance into an accredited La. college or university and quality and depth of essay. Preference will be given to LeBlanc employees who have worked at a store for at least six months. The deadline to apply is April 15, 2013. Students may apply through the Baton Rouge Area Foundation website at www.braf.org/scholarships. Contact Ellen Fargason with any questions at 225-387-6126 or efargason@braf.org.

The following band descriptions were taken from www.zfest.us.
Todd O’Neil Band Down in Louisiana, when they’re cooking up something in the kitchen, they tend to throw a little bit of everything in the pot. Applying that same homegrown creative philosophy to his life and to his music, singer/songwriter Todd O’Neill has concocted his own recipe for some seriously soulful, heartfelt and rockin’ country music. Perfected in countless honky tonks and dancehalls in the region around his hometown of Hammond, just north of New Orleans, O’Neill’s all-inclusive country music vision embraces everything from tear-inyour-beer ballads to flat-out country rock anthems, wrapped up in a tall, good looking package and delivered in a pure-country voice that sounds at once instantly familiar and like nobody you’ve heard before.
SUNDAY,
4 p.m. NOT4SALE (see description of band below) 7:30 p.m. All good things must come to an end!
Chee-Weez The Chee-Weez are a 5 piece cover/show band that specialize in making sure YOU - the audience - have a great time and leave with a smile. From the ever-expanding stage show including lights, pyro, and a 17 FOOT video wall, to the off-the-cuff antics and crowd involvement, you never know WHAT you’ll see next at the Chee-Weez show!
Randy Houser
Randy Houser is the recipient of multiple nominations for ACM and CMA Awards, a #2 single in the form of “Boots On,” and songwriting credits for major names such as Trace Adkins, Justin Moore and Chris Young. In 2008—mere months after the release of his debut single, “Anything Goes”—Houser was even asked by David Letterman himself to appear on the Late Show. His stores on January 22, 2013. new album, How Country Feels, hits
Way Cool Sr.
Way Cool Sr. is a Classic Hard Rock and Metal Cover Band from the Baton Rouge area. Formed in 2008 to play a fundraising gig for a local charity, the 4 members have never looked back - continuing to blast out 70’s and 80’s anthems. Way Cool Sr. will take you back to a time when the greatest Rock and Roll on earth filled the airwaves and prove that you are never too old for Rock and Roll.
NOT4SALE NOT4SALE is a high energy party rock cover band out of the greater Baton Rouge area. The band’s talented musicians combined with their crowd interactive stage presence sets them high among the most requested bands in the genre.
Kick Off Event Presented by LeBlanc’s The Kick Off will take place under the tent in front of the main stage on the BREC property. From this prime vantage point, enjoy great music while sampling a variety of wines provided by LeBlanc’s Supermarket as well as light refreshments and beer provided by Abita. Zachary POST Tuesday, March 19, 2013
‘Poetry Out Loud’ Winner ZHS Student New Turf Holds Hopes for Sporting Events Congratulations to Zachary High School student Alexis Granville for winning the 2013 Louisiana State Poetry Out Loud Competition. The 2013 Poetry Out Loud National Finals will take place April 28–30 in Washington, D.C. Alexis will have the opportunity to represent Zachary High School and the state at the event where she will compete to earn a scholarship award. Poetry Out Loud seeks to foster the next generation of literary readers by building on the resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry movement and the popularity of rap music among youth. Alexis participates in the district’s Talented Theatre program, and she is pictured here with Talented Theatre teacher Derek Mudd following her recent win.
Zachary Youth Park unveiled its newest amenities: four new synthetic turf grass athletic fields. The new turf was in place for a statewide softball tournament hosted March 1–3. “Hopefully, with the new fields, we will be able to compete for more tournaments while providing a yearround playing field for young athletes in the area,” said Mayor David
Amrhein. “It was an exciting weekend and a different twist from baseball. From chattering chants in the dugouts to huge music boxes and colorful uniforms, this event provided an opportunity for one to feel the meaning of “Daddy’s little girl.” “It was nice to see the support that comes with youth softball as these families come prepared to take in an entire weekend at the park,” said Shane Hebert, Zachary Youth Park director. “I hope we can continue to improve our park to be one of the most family-friendly places to play,” Hebert added.
Local Business Owners Work Together to Offer Unique Spring Break Camp
By Theresa Dold Payment
When Lori Hart opened her new business, fitTogether Fitness in Zachary, she made sure she introduced herself to all of the other business owners. However, when she met the co-owners of Just Like Home Too, Brittney Perry and Taryn P. Raymond, it was obvious the ladies would become more than just polite business neighbors. They have become advocates for each other and their working relationship gave birth to something very unique for community members this month—an art camp that they are hosting together at both locations.
“We knew we wanted to do something focused on the arts and Lori was the perfect fit for what we needed, and we were the perfect fit for what she needed,” said Perry. The two businesses are hosting the I Heart Art Spring Break Camp. “We have given each other a lot of great ideas and when they hear a cool way for me to promote my business, they share with me and vice versa,” said Hart. The camp offers children exposure to creativity at all times. Campers will begin each day at Just Like Home Too with pre-drawn artwork. “We wanted a way to keep kids active and engaged
during their time off from school,” said Raymond. “The kids have to decide what colors they want to use and then plan and solve how they will complete their artwork.” Afterwards, the kids will move over to fIT Together Fitness with Lori where they will enjoy some fun, upbeat, heart-rate raising dance fitness. “I wanted to give not only kids, but parents a chance to see that fitness can be fun! It doesn’t have to feel like work,” said Hart. Parents of all campers are able to attend a class with Lori at no charge as part of their camp fee. The afternoon will offer the kids
various stimulating activities. “Our goal is for the kids develop their motor skills, think and plan and learn to problem solve and do so while having a great time!” said Perry. The camp will be held at 6363 Main St. (Amazon Plaza across from Lane) March 25-29, 9 a.m. to noon and is open to children ages 4-12. Parents will receive a free week of dance and fitness with Lori in addition to their child’s camp. To register, call 225658-5105 or visit them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/justlikehometoo.

The Strength of Hope, Family and Community Subject of Special Program
The Friends of the West Feliciana Library will present “Writing Ruthie Leming: Biography and Our Town” Saturday, March 23 from 2 until 4 pm at the West Feliciana High School Auditorium. Ruthie Leming was a beloved teacher, neighbor, friend, and family member to many in West Feliciana. When she was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2010, the community rallied to her side. Throughout her 19-month fight with the disease that ultimately took her life, her brother Rod Dreher, a Philadelphia journalist and West Feliciana native, wrote about her struggle on his nationally-read blog. He told a compelling story of his sister’s faith and courage, and the love and solidarity Feliciana folks showed to the Leming and Dreher families during their crisis and how the amazing grace he witnessed convinced him to return home. In April, The Little Way Of Ruthie Leming: A Southern Girl, A Small
Rod Dreher (left) and Ruthie Leming (right).
Town, and the Secret of a Good Life, Dreher’s memoir of life with his sister, her battle with cancer, and the lessons she taught about hope, family, home, and how to live, will be a major release by Grand Central Pub-
lishing. The Friends of the Library present an opportunity to hear Rod Dreher read advance excerpts from Little Way, and to ask him questions about what it’s like to write intimately about one’s family and community. Also on the program are Ruthie’s friend Abby Temple Cochran, physician Dr. Tim Lindsey, who both played leading roles in Ruthie’s life and death will discuss their key parts in telling her story in Little Way. Refreshments prepared by members of the Friends will be served. This is a pre-publication event and books will not be available for purchase until April 6. The Friends of the Library will take orders for the books during the program, cash and checks only. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, available at the library and at the door. The event is not suitable for children under 10. For more information call the library at 225635-3364. All proceeds benefit the library.
