ZCSD Students Celebrate Zachary/Baker Relay Black History Month for Life: Get Involved Today!
The Zachary Community School District hosted the 2nd Annual Black History Month Celebration in the new Visual and Performing Arts Center at Zachary High School. This year, the program centered on the 50th anniversary of “The Great March to Washington” and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” civil rights speech. The event got off to a rousing start with a performance by the Zachary High School Jazz Band under the direction of Donny Alexander. The program continued with a performance of “We Shall Overcome” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by Reginald Collins and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Zachary Committee and Community Choir Volunteers accompanied by Thomas Scott. Elise Lathon led the crowd in a rendition of the National Anthem and was followed by student performances directed by Derek Mudd, Christopher Krejci and Trish Dry. All eyes were on the big screens in the theater for the airing of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech which was shown in its entirety with permission from the Intellectual Properties Management. This year’s Zachary/Baker Relay for Life is set for Friday evening, April 19 at the BREC Zachary Community Park off of Old Scenic Hwy. The event offers a great way to support those in our community who have lost loved ones and to celebrate with the survivors who fought—and continue to fight—cancer. Here are a few updates on how you can become involved if you have not already. Teams: Relay teams are still forming, and you can either join an existing team or create your own. This year’s theme is “Making Cancer History,” and teams are encouraged to be creative when choosing tent decorations and food items. This can be a favorite historical time period, event or person. There will be prizes awarded for the best decorated tent related to this year’s theme with bonus points given if
ZHS Student Poet Taylor Franklin performed her original poem at the school district’s black history program.
ZHS Choir students under the direction of Jason Bowers, also lent their voices to the evening. After an extensive literary raffle, Superintendent Scott Devillier thanked the community for joining in the celebration.

you incorporate the food you are selling and/or your activity with your theme. Register your team or join a team at www.relayforlife.org/zacharybakerla. Survivors: A special survivor dinner will be held in honor of all survivors, but registration is required to receive an invitation. Contact Tamara Vines at 225-654-0779 or register online at www.relayforlife.org/ zacharybakerla. The dinner is free and will take place at the relay, from 6-7 p.m. Survivors registered will receive a free purple survivor t-shirt. Freelance Artist Lisa Pope Exhibits Artwork at City Utility Office The City of Zachary is proud to showcase local artists from the Zachary Artist Guild at the City Hall Utility Office throughout the year. Zachary newcomer Lisa Pope is presently exhibiting several of her pieces, including “Two Blades of Grass”, soft pastel, “Purple Iris”, watercolor, “Curiosity”, watercolor and “Blue Star Fish Discovery”, watercolor. Her skills and expertise includes, watercolor, pastel, acrylic paint, graphite and charcoal draw-
ings. She also does commissioned paintings and portraits from photos. She is presently a member of the Louisiana Watercolor Society and the Zachary Artist Guild. Lisa has always loved art, even though she chose to pursue a career in education, serving as a school counselor in Virginia Beach, Virginia. With a career at hand, marriage and family, she was left with little time for art. After growing to miss it, she dug out her old paints
and gave them a whirl, immediately reconnecting with her original love for painting. Lisa says, “I apply paint and can’t wait to see what happens. Pablo Picasso was quoted as saying, ‘Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.’ This is what I am attempting to do–return to the art I love and see the world with fresh new eyes... It feels like a rebirth.”

Champion Austin Bradford
Austin Bradford, a third grade student at Central Private School, earned another championship during the 2012 MTA Louisiana CrossCountry (LACC) races series which is a 10-round championship series promoted by AcadianaRacing.com. Race venues test each rider’s overall ability by offering motocross sections, hills, roots, woods trails and grass tracks. Although he was among the youngest of the riders for this class, Austin raced a 2012 KTM 50SX and proved that his talent and ability, along with great support from his parents and little sister, was a hard combination to beat. Over the course of the season, Austin has won seven out of the ten rounds and received the hole shot award for eight out of ten rounds. As a result of his hard work, Austin re-
ceived an award for the 2012 LACC Overall Championship as well as the Number 1 plate, which signifies his accomplishments during the 2012 series, at the year end LACC awards banquet in February. Austin would like to send a special thanks to his Dad, who is his mechanic, for always keeping his bike running in top shape.
