Help Fight Cancer with Food, Fun and Family: Zachary/Baker Relay for Life Event
This year’s Zachary/Baker Relay for Life is set for Friday evening, April 19 at the BREC Zachary Community Park located at 20055 Hwy. 964 off of Old Scenic Hwy. This annual event offers a great way to support those in the community who have lost loved ones and to celebrate with the survivors who fought—and continue to fight—cancer…and have a great time with the entire family! Relay teams are ready to go with food, fun and games for you and your family to enjoy throughout the night. This year’s theme is “Making Cancer History,” and teams were encouraged to be creative when choosing tent decorations and food items.
There are more than 20 teams set to be on site during the event, selling food and offering games as part of the fundraising efforts. The special survivor dinner will begin at 6 p.m. The dinner is free for survivors and a caregiver, but registration is required to receive an invitation. Contact Tamara Vines at 225-654-0779 to inquire on the availability for this special dinner and recognition. This year’s event offers a few changes to help those in attendance enjoy the evening even more. In order to ease the task of parking, a free shuttle bus will allow you to park in the LeBlanc’s shopping center and be dropped off at the entrance
to the BREC Park where all of the festivities will be held. The shuttle bus will run from 5:30-10 p.m. Parking will also be available at Zachary Youth Park with survivor, handicap and volunteer parking at the BREC Zachary Community Park. Ticket booths will be set up, and tickets can be used at all team tents and booths during the event. All major credit cards, checks and cash will be accepted. Tickets are $1 each and will be the only currency accepted at team booths. Games2U will be set up from 6-8 p.m. with their game van, hamster ball and laser tag. UnlimSee RELAY on page 2
Zachary Schools Use Extra Funds to Prepare for 2013 School Year While school districts around the state are feeling the crunch of rising costs and shrinking income, the Zachary Community School District has a healthy budget as it faces the 2013-2014 school year and the changes that come with it. Zachary Business Manager Gordon Robertson attributes the nearly $1 million expected budget surplus for the current fiscal year to conservative budgeting and a one-time sales tax spike caused by a more than $300 million expansion at Georgia-Pacific Port Hudson. Since 2009, the state legislature has failed to fund the 2.75% increase in MFP funding known as the growth factor. The MFP funding freeze, coupled with rising costs and unfunded mandates have seen school districts throughout the state struggle to provide adequate resources to address the growing demands of educating students. In anticipation of this, Zachary Schools officials chose to place several projects on hold and reduce staffing over the past few years to make sure they were able to weather the financial storm. Many parents have seen the headlines in area news outlets and wondered what that means for their students. Superintendent Scott Devillier explains, “We budgeted very conservatively going into this year, not knowing what to expect with the MFP and the economy. We delayed many of the plans we already had in place in order to determine whether funding would be available. Now that we see we are in a position to move forward, many of these projects will be fast-tracked.” Devillier says he plans to lower See FUNDS on page 3

student to teacher ratio in elementary classrooms by hiring additional personnel. He also anticipates funding curriculum writing and professional development for the new Common Core State Standards implementation this summer. Technology in the school district will also benefit from additional funding. Two years ago, the school board altered the replacement cycle for district computers due to funding restraints. Recently, the district has formed a technology integration committee led by Federal Programs and Technology Director Gwendolyn Longmire to identify areas where technology will enhance instruction in the new curriculum. The group is identifying best practices and making recommendations including the possible piloting of a 1 to 1 laptop initiative in the Ninth Grade Academy and the purchase of iPads and other resources to enhance instruction district-wide. “The bottom line is this couldn’t come at a better time. We have a lot to do to make sure our teachers are in a position to be successful next year as they implement a new, more rigorous curriculum. This will allow us to provide the training and additional resources they need to give them and our students a step ahead,” Devillier said.

Simplify Accommodations is Thriving Due to Film Tax Credits Stephanie Clarke and Miles Higgins of Simplify Accommodations, LLC, the exclusive housing provider for Raleigh Studios Baton Rouge at the Celtic Media Centre, announced today that they have reached agreements with seven films to provide housing for their cast and crews while filming in Louisiana. “We are excited about the opportunity to coordinate the hotels, corporate housing and executive accommodations for another great group of production companies that will, once again, be filming in Louisiana over the next several months. We sincerely hope that the tax incentives that have played a vital role in attracting these films to our great state remain in place for the foreseeable future and thus allow companies like ourselves to exist,” said Mr. Higgins. Simplify Accommodations will also
be assisting the Louisiana International Film Festival with their hotel accommodations. “Simplify Accommodations has been the perfect partner for the studio by booking thousands of room nights for productions with local properties, and those guests are putting millions into our local economy,” said Patrick Mulhearn, director of studio operations at the Celtic Media Centre. “They’re a great example of a business that has thrived as a result of Louisiana’s motion picture tax credit system.” Simplify Accommodations provides corporate housing, hotel accommodations and luxury housing to corporate clients and the entertainment industry nationally. Simplify Accommodations is owned by Missy Higgins, Miles Higgins, Melissa Higgins and Stephanie Clarke.
Employee Engagement Topic of Chamber Workshop
The Zachary Chamber of Commerce will be offering a workshop in conjunction with Dale Carnegie Training called “Engaged Employees Create Results.” Employers who would like to learn the costs and benefits of employee engagement, increase employees’ commitment or reduce turnover should consider this two-hour seminar, which will be held on April 30 from 11:30 a.m.– 1:30 p.m. at the Zachary Branch Library. Ground breaking research has revealed that there are three clusters of behaviors that significantly impact engagement. Jim Winner–author of
Split Second Choice, new business development coach and franchisee of Dale Carnegie Training–will present these clusters and break down the individual actions in order to develop enthusiastic, empowered, confident and inspired employees. Employee engagement can produce significant increases in productivity, upwards of 202% more; and attitude maintenance is one critical factor. The cost is $10 at the door; a Subway lunch will be provided. RSVP to Kea Warne at the Chamber office by calling 225-654-6777.

The Emerald City Comes Alive on New Performing Arts Stage The Zachary High School Theatre and Choir departments premiered The Wizard of Oz, last Thursday, April 11. The popular musical will continue to run this week through April 20 with Thursday through Saturday performances at 7 p.m. each day. This main stage performance is the first musical theatre production in Zachary High’s state-of-the-art theatre. With fly zones and amazing seating, this performance is a treat for both actors and audience alike. The performing art space has been used recently to host the community wide Black History Celebration featuring readings and performances from students throughout the school district as well as a special appearance from Ms. Rosa Parks. The theatre was also home to the recent district band festival with schools from all over the south in attendance. The space has proven to be a useful and
beautiful addition to the community of Zachary for multiple, diverse productions, presentations, pageants and more. Director Jen Masterson has been looking forward to this opportunity for years, after the demolition of the old, drafty theatre with poor seating and acoustics. The award-winning choir, under the direction of Jason Bowers, was also on the stage for the second time this season. Tickets are $5 for elementary students, $10 for middle and high school students (with ID), $15 for adults, or $10 purchased through a
cast member. For more information, please email Jen at jen.masterson@zacharyschools.org, Trish at trish. dry@zacharyschools.org or Jason at Jason.bowers@zacharyschools.org. In addition to the Wizard of Oz production, the cast will be hosting an opportunity to have breakfast with the lead characters on Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m. in the theatre. Parents may bring their own cameras for photo opportunities. A breakfast buffet will

Zachary High School’s Varsity Baseball team hosted their annual benefit for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on Thursday, April 4 at 5:45 p.m. at the Zachary Youth Park. Rhyan Rosenbach, a Zachary student with cystic fibrosis, threw out the first pitch of the game around 5:45 p.m. The event has been held in Rhyan’s honor every year since he was born, which was when he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Tables
were set up at the entrance to collect donations for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Every year, 100% of the donations collected go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and aid in helping with medical research to find a cure for all those with Cystic Fibrosis, including Rhyan. Rhyan is the son of Brian Rosenbach and Kati Simmons of Zachary. He is also the nephew of former Bronco Baseball player, Keith Rosenbach.
