Lane Starting Construction New Pumper Strengthens Response Capabilities on Radiation Oncology Center The Zachary Fire Department celebrated the delivery of a new custom pumper fire truck as well as companion tools and equipment that will further aid their efforts in protecting the community. The truck, manufactured by Ferrara Fire Apparatus, Inc of Holden, La, was obtained with $478,562 in federal Community Development Grant Block funds from the state Office of Community Development’s Disaster Recovery Unit. The new fire truck has both an increased ability to haul water and a more powerful internal pump capacity than the trucks that were used during the Hurricane Gustav response. These features are critical in the remote and unincorporated areas of the city, where there is a greater variance in the spacing of fire hydrants, reduced water resources and hydrant pressures. Mayor David Amhrein said that

Lane’s new radiation oncology center will be built behind its existing physicians’ office complex located across from the Zachary Post Office.

Two and a half years after talks with Baton Rouge General’s President and CEO Bill Holman first began, Lane announced at the Rotarian’s weekly luncheon last Thursday that Zachary will be home to a new radiation oncology center through a partnership between Lane and Baton Rouge General. Lane RMC CEO Randy Olson explained to the assembled group that the final documents had been signed with the construction company just the day before. The new center will be located at the rear of Lane’s physicians office complex across from the post office. Existing office space will be renovated for intake and examination purposes. The actual radiation procedure will take place in a

newly constructed “vault,” a fortress of a room whose walls, floors and ceilings must be constructed with six feet of concrete to contain the radiation. The total project cost is $3.5 million, with 1.5 dedicated to new construction and the remaining dedicated to purchasing a linear accelerator, bringing advanced 3D radiation technology directly to residents in Zachary and the surrounding area. Radiation oncology uses high energy radiation to control, shrink or kill cancerous cells and is often used in combination with surgery and/ or chemotherapy. Very specialized equipment and analyses are required to offer this procedure; however, the See RADIATION page 2

“For us, it’s like Christmas in March. As we continue to grow our city, public safety is our number one priority and this piece of equipment will allow us to only improve what we do now. Amrhein and Fire Chief Danny Kimble believe that the city stands to benefit from the addition of this equipment. With a better-equipped fire department, all citizens of Zachary will be served on an everyday basis as well as during times of crisis, such as a natural disaster. “More than half of the $1 billion in CDBG funding we received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development went to local governments, because we knew you best understood where your recovery dollars were needed,” said OCD Executive Director Pat Forbes. “This new fire truck will strengthen Zachary’s fire insurance rating and provide needed additional support to respond to a growing, thriving community.”
