Syracuse, founded in 1891. The church remained active until The Diocese of Syracuse in 2009 closed the Holy Trinity parish, merged it with a nearby parish and put the Holy Trinity building up for sale. Last year, Father Bayhi and his building committee contacted the Diocese of Syracuse to purchase the property and bring the windows, some furniture and the sacred objects to Zachary to re-purpose them into a new sanctuary to be built along La. 64, on the northeast corner of the current St. John the Baptist Church campus. “We received permission to buy the church so that we could save and repurpose all the beautiful, sacred elements in our new church,” said Father Bayhi. “The Syracuse church was built by German imThe above altar is among the numerous sacred items migrants who made a trebeing purchased. mendous sacrifice to have those windows installed, by Theresa Dold Payment so in deference and honor to them, After months of uncertainty, the we knew we would keep their names members of St. John the Baptist displayed at our church.” Catholic Church in Zachary have fiHowever, the purchase was nally received resolution to the pur- quickly halted when The Diocese of chase of items from a vacant church Syracuse along with Father Bayhi in Syracuse, N.Y. Tears To Prayer Breakfast Guests
By Theresa Dold Payment
On Saturday, April 6, more than 110 individuals attended the annual Cancer Survivor Prayer Breakfast, receiving more than eggs and coffee during the moving program. According to event chair Cherie Gravios, this was the largest event to-date in its seven year existence. This year’s program, called “Amazing Graces,” focused on the graces survivors have received or that God can offer during and after cancer. The morning began with prayer and blessing by Father Jeff Bayhi and was followed by a breathtaking performance of Amazing Grace by Roby Wax. Dr. Les Colvin, associate pastor of First Baptist Church, shared the shattering experience he and his family have endured over the past year when their 5-year-old granddaughter Ava was diagnosed with leukemia. His daughter, Kim Snuggs, traveled from Birmingham, Ala. with Ava and her oldest daughter Allie to share their journey. Through tears, sobs and moments of silence, Kim’s story touched everyone at the breakfast as she recounted the steps from the day she learned her daughter had leukemia to their day-to-day life at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Frank Ragsdale shared his survivor story and offered information on the upcoming oncology center being built as a partnership between Lane and BR
General. Dr. Greg Davis, senior pastor of Zachary United Methodist Church, offered the closing prayer. The breakfast was closed with a reminder to attend the Zachary/Baker Relay for Life on April 19. There is still time to join a team if interested. The event will be held at the BREC Park on Old Scenic Hwy. and a shuttle will offer parking at LeBlanc’s parking lot and transportation to the BREC Park and back. For more details on the event or to join a team, visit www. relayforlife.org/zacharybakerla. More details will follow in the April 16 edition of the Zachary Post. The committee would like to thank the cooks: Jason Fendlason, Reggie Dykes and Charlie Dupont as well as this year’s sponsors: Jack Burk Allstate Insurance, Lane RMC, Zachary Rotary Club, Dr. Sal Lusco and First Baptist Church Zachary. Due to the generous support of these sponsors, cancer survivors and their guests attended at no charge.

Four ZHS Art Students Chosen for BR Gallery Exhibit
POST
By Theresa Dold Payment
On April 3, the Baton Rouge Gallery opened its doors for a reception featuring its annual REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE Juried High School Exhibition. Art fans were able to view over 40 works of original art from East Baton Rouge public and private high school students. This exhibition spotlighted the work of local high school students, showcasing their talents as well as the importance of arts education. Both the positive effects of arts education on young students and the efforts of the educators who challenge their students were highlighted. Four students from Zachary High School, along with 36 others, were accepted to show their work in this adjudicated exhibit. They were selected from a group of over 150 entries. Madison Petty was one of four finalists nominated for the Julie Dufour Richardson and Paul A. Dufour Scholarship with her piece “Diriamba.” Hope Yantis’s “The Wash,” Brianna Square’s “Crawfish Boil” and Calyn Knight’s “Ignite” will also be on display through April 25 at the gallery, located at 1515 Dalrymple Dr. Admission is free.

The church’s exercise of religion, the Syracuse parish claimed, is repurposing the windows into another church and the burden is the enormous costs of maintaining a vacant, deteriorating building. as an infringement on the parish’s mission. Removing them would not be in the best interest of neighborhood, she said. Diocese officials and preservationists agree the building is deteriorating and suffering interior damage because the roof leaks, but a permit to remove the windows was denied by the Landmark Preservation Board. As of March 2013, an agreement was made to move forward without the windows. “We have other avenues where we can explore to obtain windows such as these,” stated Bayhi. “The church in Syracuse was absolutely magnificent, but it’s falling down and I don’t know what will happen. An agreement was made contrary to prior statements that without the windows, there would be no purchase. “It is sad that the windows did not come with the church, but it was a process that we have to respect made by the Planning Board of the City of Syracuse,” added Bayhi. As far as windows for the church in Zachary, Bayhi stated that he and the planning committee are currently looking at two different vendors who

Establish a rock-solid foundation through these lessons by learning that the Bible is God’s Word. The deeper one digs, the more clearly he will see that the Bible truly is God’s message to mankind. Enjoy skits, innovative activities, games, crafts and catchy songs.
