Bronco Baseball Cruises Past Airline 10-0 in Playoffs

Zachary High Pitcher Evan Tidwell pitched 5 innings of shutout baseball Wednesday night to lead the Zachary High Bronco baseball team to a 10-0 win over the Airline High School Vikings. The game was called in the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule in LHSAA playoffs. Zachary, now 24-11 on the season, is the 10th seed in the state playoffs. They started the game strong with a 3 run first inning. The Broncos were facing one of the best pitchers in the state against Airline High Ace Landon Lewis. Lewis came into the game with an 8-1 record. The team will now advance to the regional round of the state 5A Playoffs to face either Byrd High School or Hahnville High. See more highlight pictures of the game on page 10.

Zachary Historical Association Marching Forward for June Event By James Ronald Skains

Once again, the Zachary Historical Association is on the march back into history with a one-day event planned for two locations at Port Hudson and the History Room at the historical Plains Presbyterian Church. “We have planned this event to memorialize the end of the Civil War 150 years ago,’’ Betty Tucker, president of the society told the Zachary Post/Feliciana Explorer. “Some of the most vital military events in the War happened right in our backyard.’’ “Our memorial event on June 23 will begin at 1 p.m. in the Port Hudson Commemorative area. The second stop will be at the Port Hudson National Cemetery,’’ Betty said in laying out the plans for the day in June. “Then we will move over to the Rist McCallum house, the Harrell / Hudson house, and the Annison Plantation.’’ “We will have a “Black Powder Gun’’ fired during the opening ceremo-

ny,’’ Betty added. “A few re-enactors will be on hand to liven up things, and to tell some of the great stories about

Port Hudson.’’ “Also on our agenda for day is a visit to the Heritage Room of the Plains

Presbyterian Church,’’ Betty noted. “Ms. Jane Burk, a lifelong member will be on hand there to talk about the history church.’’ “We will conclude our day’s activities with a wine and cheese party at the Bennett House,’’ from 6-8 p.m.,’’ Betty added. “Most people think of the early history of America as being all on the East Coast but there were prosperous plantation owners and merchants in the Felicianas before the Revolutionary War,’’ Betty stated. “Some of the women in the area have qualified for membership in the Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) for military actions of some of their ancestors right here in the Plains and Feliciana area in the late 1770s.’’ “Since the first explorers came up or down the Mississippi River, people who wanted to put down roots have coveted the lands north of Bayou ManSee ZACHARY HISTORY on page 2

chac and south of Thompson Creek for its level fertile soil to grow cotton and to graze livestock on,’’ Betty explained. “The center of activity in the 1700s and early 1800s were centered in the area where the first historical Plains Presbyterian Church was located in Ambrosia.’’ “I really don’t think that people who pass by the ten flags we have flying in downtown Zachary realize the significance that each flag has to this area,’’ Betty acknowledged. “Each flag has a story to tell about a period of our history.’’ “It is mind boggling to me to realize that for the last 300 years, people have been in this area raising families, raising cotton and corn, and running cattle on the Plains area which includes the now city of Zachary,’’ Betty noted. “Zachary was only incorporated 124 years ago.’’ “Some people think that Zachary was named after the only President from Louisiana, Zachary Taylor because he owned property north of Baton Rouge,’’ Betty enumerated. “The name of our town came about in a left-

handed kind of matter, and was named after the man whose property the railroad bought for their depot. “However, this was not the first railroad in the Plains Port Hudson Feliciana area,’’ Betty pointed out. “The first railroad in this part of Louisiana was from Port Hudson to Clinton.’’ “It was started in 1836 which was in first decade of the development of the steam locomotive.’’ Betty noted. “It was used during the Civil War to transport wounded soldiers to the hospital at Centenary College in Clinton.’’ Lois Hastings, Danis Black, and Brenda Jarrell originally chartered the Zachary Historical Association on December 4, 1992 (charter #34421466N) as a 501 (C)(3) non-profit entity. The first nine members of the Board of Directors of the Association in addition to the incorporators were: Tom McKowen, Nancy Johnson, Carroll Clark, Betty Yoes, Bobby Snowden and Terre

Barklage. “I was fortunate enough to have worked under Lois Hasting for nine years,’’ Betty related. “She instilled in me the importance of the history of the ten flags flying over our area.” “We have history galore in our area dating back for centuries,’’ Betty acknowledged. “We could be commemorating some historical event every week if we had a large enough membership and adequate funding.’’ “We have about 40 active members in the Association now, and another 40 re-enactors who work with us,” Betty explained. “One of the real bright spots for history in Zachary is Ryan Southall, who teaches in the Zachary school system.’’ “He is a very active member of our Historical Association, and a re-enactor too,’’ Betty said in conclusion. “I imagine that he makes history come alive in his classroom.’’

Bankston Steps Down as Chairman of Bank of Zachary after 17 Year Stint Russell Bankston has stepped

down from his position as Chairman of the Board of Bank of Zachary and its holding company Zachary Bancshares, Inc., a position he has held for the past seventeen years. Rodney S. (Sam) Johnson was elected Chairman at a meeting of the Board of Directors held April 18. A retired attorney and former City Judge, Mr. Bankston was first elected to the Bank of Zachary Board of Directors in January, 1971. He succeeded Leonard Aguillard as Chairman in April, 1996. Mr. Bankston will remain as a member of the Board, and serve as Vice Chairman. Johnson, a Zachary-based State Farm agent, was first elected to the Board in October, 1991. He has

Johnson (left) with Bankston

served as Vice Chairman since 1996. “Our bank is fortunate to have community leaders like Russell and Sam as members of our Board,” said Bank of Zachary President Preston L. Kennedy. “They are fully committed to our mission of meeting the financial needs of our community”.

Zachary Resident, Law Student Awarded Fellowship

The Peggy Browning Fund has awarded a 10-week summer fellowship to Zachary resident, Tracy Le Duff, a first year student at Southern University Law Center. Tracy will spend the fellowship working at Los Angeles Black Worker Center Project in Los Angeles, CA. The application process is highly competitive, and the award was based on her outstanding qualifications. In 2013, the Peggy Browning Fund will support nearly 70 public interest labor law fellowships nationwide. With more than 500 applicants from 139 participating law schools, securing a Peggy Browning Fellowship is not an easy task. Peggy Browning Fellows are distinguished students who have not only excelled in law school but who have also demonstrated their commitment to workers’ rights through their previous educational, work, volunteer and personal experiences. Tracy Le Duff is no exception. A non-traditional student, Tracy

has more than 15 years of experience in Human Resource Management. Prior to law school, she worked in the casino industry as a HR director. Her HR role introduced her to the rights of workers and further developed her fascination with the legal aspects of wage and hour violations, employment discrimination and harassment. She returned to school with the goal of obtaining her JD degree in order to advocate for employees who are socially, economically or politically prevented from advocating for themselves. She currently volunteers as a part-time law clerk for Southeast Louisiana Legal Services in their Employment and Public Benefits unit. “I view the practice of labor law as the next level in my career, one in which I will have a more direct opportunity to evaluate human relationships and improve the lives of others. My role as a Peggy Browning Fellow will help further that goal and give me the opportunity to transition my employment and labor experience,” said Tracy. The Peggy Browning Fund is a not for-profit organization established in memory of Margaret A. Browning, a prominent union-side attorney who was a member of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) from 1994 until 1997. Peggy Browning Fellowships provide law students with unique, diverse and challenging work experiences fighting for social and economic justice. These experiences encourage and inspire students to pursue careers in public interest labor law.

Feliciana’s Best Creameries: A Fresh Treasure of Milk with the Taste of Yesteryear

By James Ronald Skains

There are apparently ten keys to the milk business; pasteurization, homogenization, temperature, freshness, hormones and antibiotics, feed, calving cycle, genetics and marketing. The pasteurization of milk is the process in which milk is placed at a high temperature for a certain length of time to kill any impurities. “Our milk is pasteurized, but in a very different manner than the large milk processors use,’’ Mike Brian, who along with his family members operate Feliciana Creameries, pointed out. “We bring our milk up to 145 degrees and leave it there for 30 minutes.’’ “In comparison, the large milk processors use a flash heating system whereby they heat the milk up to 170 degrees and hold it there for 17 seconds,’’ Brian elaborated on the different pasteurization methods. Homogenization of milk is the process of putting the milk under pressure to blow apart the fat molecules in the milk. Whole milk has 3.25% fat content, low fat has 2% and skim milk has 1%. “We don’t homogenize our milk but leave the cream in the milk to give it a much richer taste which is what our customers are looking for,’’ Brian, who has a degree in Dairy Science from LSU, pointed out. Mike’s mom and dad, Vernon and Jeanette, started the dairy operation in 1964, so Mike grew up on the

farm with about 200 to 300 hundred head of dairy cows at any one time. In 1982, Mike Brian began his studies in Diary Science at LSU, graduating in 1984. “Early on in life, I realized that I wanted to be a dairyman,’’ Brian said. “I remember taking a dairy products tasting class at LSU which gave us a chance to see the results of the finished product from a different prospective,’’ Brian recalled. “However, the key to the dairy business for the owner is in the genetics and breeding of the cows.’’ “All of our cows are bred through artificial insemination,’’ Brian related. “This way we are able to improve the quality of our cows, our milk, and the quantity produced, all in an ongoing herd improvement cycle.’’ “We pasture all our cows 365 days a year,’’ Brian acknowledged. “According to some people, primarily grass fed dairy cattle produce milk with higher beta-carotene content. We do not use growth hormones or antibiotics to stimulate either growth or milk production.’’ “We like to keep our cows on about a 14 month cycle,’’ Brian added. “Typically a milk cow will produce a good quantity of milk for about 8 years, and then we send them to the sale barn at about 10 years of age. We don’t start our cows to calving until they are at least two years old, then we dry our cows up for a 60 day vacation and let them roam

The Brian Family (L-R) Vernon, Jeanette, Brady, Maggie, Pattie and Mike

our 150 acres of pasture land.’’ “I like to spread my calving out throughout the year in comparison to most large dairies who like the majority of their calves to come in the fall of the year,’’ Brian related. “We take the bull calves to the sale barn and evaluate the potential of the milk cows. Since we breed our producing cows to such good bulls around the country, we like to grow our herd internally. Sometimes we get a great looking bull calf with all the right genetics and we may sell him to another Dairyman to service

their herd.’’ Five years ago, the Brian Dairy was milking 300 head of cows. However, continuing to produce milk in large quantities and selling it to the Dairy Co-op was proving to be not financially feasible. In June 2009, Brian shut down the dairy and re-evaluated his operation. “It was at that point, we decided to put in our own pasteurization process and bottling operation. We decided to market our milk to local grocery stores and build up a loyal clientele.’’
