Zachary Men’s Club: Over 50 Years of Service
Community Service Group Expanding, Renovating for a New Generation of Civic Advocates By Daniel Duggan
Last year when Family Circle Magazine named Zachary as one of the 10 best cities for families to live in the United States, they cited the extraordinary work of the Zachary Men’s Club as one of the major determining factors for the national recognition. The Zachary Men’s Club has been instrumental in facilitating the growth of the Zachary Community School System, The Zachary Food Pantry, and the Zachary Community Center. The Zachary Men’s Club was organized in 1959 by Bobby Snowden, Robert Holder, David Horton, James Forbes, Milton Lee, Jesse Spears, George Milligan, Sr., Charlie Stones, George Brown, and Theodore Stewart. These men, and many others, sought to create an organization to provide resources to members of the Zachary Community that will enable them to become more productive citizens through community involvement by helping the poor and needy, assisting with education endeavors, and promoting a culture of helping those who need a little hand up in the community. Over the years, the Men’s Club,

has made significant real estate investment off of Rollins Road and Avenue A. In 1965 the Club was able to donate the land to the City of Zachary for the Zachary Community Center. Last year, seeing the need

for an expanded Zachary Food Bank, the Men’s Club donated to the city the acreage needed to build the new Zachary Food Pantry, which held its ribbon cutting last week. These parcels of land were paid for by the members of the Men’s Club and donated free of charge to the City for the specific use of helping the less fortunate members of the community. The Zachary Men’s Club is currently renovating their building located at 5746 Rollins Road. They originally purchased the building and 13 acres in 1959, and the building has been added onto several times. “We have gutted the entire building, raised the roof, and are incorporating a commercial kitchen, so that we can host larger events in the facility in the coming months,” Floyd Peli-
chet, President of the Zachary Men’s Club, said. Four years ago, members of the Zachary Men’s Club envisioned using the acreage plot of land behind their facilities on Rollins Road to plant a small sustainable garden for members and their families. They envisioned their members toiling in the dirt on a volunteer basis to grow some delicious fruits and vegetables. Early success and support from the local community has grown the once fledgling garden into the Zachary Community Garden. The Men’s Club is able to provide fresh produce to the Zachary Food Pantry, which is just adjacent to the garden on the property the Men’s Club donated. See MEN”S CLUB page 2

“The Summer Garden is coming in right now, the cooler spring has delayed some of the harvesting,” said Floyd Pelichet. Pelichet said that they are currently picking string beans, okra, tomatoes, yellow squash, cucumbers, and some blueberries. In the fall the Garden group will plant its winter garden with the intention of continuing donating the harvest to the Zachary Food Pantry. This will be the fourth year that vegetables grown in the garden will be donated to the Pantry. The group intends to plant broccoli, cabbage, turnips, mustards, collards, okra and peas this September. In addition to the assistance with the Food Pantry and Community Center, the Men’s Club provides annual college scholarships to two Zachary High Seniors, provides assistance to needy residents on utility bills, assists the elderly with home maintenance, provides food baskets to families, and assists the Zachary High athletic Departments with concessions assistance and fundraising for underprivileged youth to participate in sports. The Men’s Club also hosts a back to school fair and supply giveaway annually, as well as, hosting an annual Easter Egg Hunt, which hundred’s of kids participate in each

year. Upon completion of their fully renovated building, the facility will be available as an emergency shelter during hurricanes, and as a place for a repast for families who otherwise have no other location after a funeral. When the new facilities are complete, the Men’s Club will continue to promote civic involvement by hosting community informational meetings, political forums, and City of Zachary official functions.
