City of Zachary to Borrow Father Siebold Celebrates 60 Years $10,000,000 to Improve Roads
The Zachary City Council voted unanimously at last Tuesday’s meeting to ask the State Bond Commission to borrow $10 million for road improvements. The burden on taxpayers would not be for more 17 years at a rate of less than 7 percent interest. Bond attorney Jerry Osborne, a lawyer with Foley & Judell of New Orleans, told the council that the money would be paid back to the using the city’s share of the parish’s half-cent road tax revenue, but in the event that the tax does not generate enough money
to pay back the bond amount, the city will have to use other tax revenue from the local taxpayers. Zachary’s land use plan identifies streets that should be improved, in addition Church Street in front of LeBlanc’s Supermarket and the intersection of La. 64 and La. 964 would be included in the projects. Last Fall, Zachary voters changed the home rule charter to give the Mayor and City Council the ability to borrow money and bond out revenue without a vote of the citizens of Zachary.
Father Gerard Siebold (pictured center), who lives in residence at the Rectory of St. John the Baptist in Zachary, celebrated his 60th year as a Redemptorist last week. Father Jerry is a retired Redemptorist priest. While he is no longer in active ministry with his religious order, he remains active! Father Jerry celebrates the full Catholic Mass monthly at Grace Nursing Home and Zachary Manor; Communion Service at Lane Regional; and Mass weekly at Oakwood Village Assisted Living Community. Father Jerry also makes emergency visits to Lane Regional Medical Center, administering Last Rites to those in need.

Lane Auxiliary Seeks BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo Receives Volunteers National Award for Marketing Campaign DoNew you know someone with extra
BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo was recently selected to receive the National Kudo’s Marketing Award by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). NRPA will present the award publicly at a special reception at the association’s 2013 Congress & Exposition in Houston, TX on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Each year, NRPA National Awards are presented to individuals and agencies across the U.S. to honor their efforts-both professional and personal-in the field of parks and recreation. Recipients are selected from a pool of applicants by NRPA’s National Awards and Scholarship Committee, and are chosen for excellence in a variety of topics, including professional and voluntary service, programming, leadership, research and public outreach. For BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo, the overall message of the 2012 marketing campaign was “Geaux Wild.” This particular message was chosen for its double meaning: “Geaux” is the colloquial version of “go” in

Louisiana as the word often denotes support for something. Using the phrase “Geaux Wild” helped the Zoo create a message of “support our wildlife conservation efforts.” Geaux Wild’s second meaning was a call to action: go to the Zoo and see what is new at your community’s Zoo. “The Geaux Wild campaign was exceedingly effective in creating public awareness. Our community immediately identifies with the word “Geaux,” and the Zoo capitalized on this instant identification to lend authenticity, reconizability and likeability to our Zoo and parks system,” said Mary Woods, former Friends of the Zoo Marketing Director. A zoo creative team brainstorming session led to the 2012 “Geaux Wild” marketing campaign which was created, designed and implemented by Woods, Kris Bordelon, Graphic Designer for BREC and Erin O’Neill, Publicity and Marketing Manager for BREC.
