Albert Mills, Jr. Set to Celebrate 100 Years of Life By James Ronald Skains
“I remember vividly the day World War I ended,’’ 99 year old Albert C. Mills, Jr. told the Zachary Post during an interview this week. “I was 5 years old. Guns started going off all around our place and all the farmers were ringing their dinner bells. At first it scared me, but when I asked my Daddy what was happening, he told me that everybody was celebrating the end of the Great War in Europe.” Albert C. Mills, Jr. would have a much more vivid firsthand account of World War II as a 28 year old draftee. “In 1942, the Army recruiters in the area kept after me to enlist so that I could go to Officer Candidate School and get a commission. I didn’t enlist and I got drafted in July 1942, but after I got to Camp Shelby as a Buck Private, I had the opportunity to go to OCS and it didn’t take me but a minute to take them up on that offer.” Mills had received a degree in Agriculture Commerce from LSU in 1935. After working for four years in the family’s Rhodes and Mills General Store in Zachary, Mills decided to take the federal civil service exam which he passed with flying colors. “After I qualified on my civil service test, I got a job as a Rural Mail Carrier on Route 1 out of Zachary,’’ Mills recalled. “That was what I was doing plus raising cattle when WWII broke out. I didn’t think I would be drafted so quickly because I was 28 years old and a rural mail carrier; so that was why I didn’t enlist so I could go to OCS school.” “But the good Lord blessed me as I was able to become an officer although I went in at the bottom of the ladder. In fact, the good Lord blessed me all the way through my time in the military. Because of my background as a rural letter carrier, I was put into the Postal Department of the US Army. They sent me to school to learn how the Army handled the mail. We had to organize our system as we went along and I was assigned

to a training center in Bristol, England.’’ “I got orders to go to North Africa as a Postal Officer, but at the last minute they re-assigned me to go to Oslo, Norway,’’ Mills related. “By that time I had made Captain and was the ranking Postal Officer in Norway. The Germans had been kicked out of Norway by this time and the King had been re-instated.’’ “I got to know some of the nobility there in Norway and was invited to go to the King’s hunting camp above the Arctic Circle. However, that was one trip that I wasn’t able to make because I was the ranking Postal Officer the country and couldn’t get a replacement to make the trip which I think was for a month.” Although the Germans had been kicked out of Norway by the time
Mills arrived in Oslo, the Germans were still close enough to use Oslo for target practice with their V2 rockets. “We were in church one day when a V2 rocket landed right outside the church door,’’ Mills remembered. “It was a madhouse. Some people were running trying to get out of the building; other people were getting under the pews. A few days later they fired another V2 into the town square. One of my postal clerks was sitting on a park bench. The concussion from the explosion blew the bench with the clerk about 75 yards but the clerk wasn’t seriously hurt.’’ “When Albert got back from overseas, he had two little boys, Albert III and Wilmer, to get to know,’’ 92 year old Kathleen Riddle Mills chimed in. “We had got married in 1943 and
as long as Albert was in the states, I went with him, but when he went overseas I came back home. The way he got acquainted with his boys after he got back from Norway was sitting around peeling sugar for them to chew on and talking to them.’’ After the war years, Albert and Katie had two more children, David and Kathleen. The four Mills siblings had a total of 19 children. At a recent family get together in the old Mills family barn, there were over 70 grandchildren or great-grandchildren present. “When I got back from the war, I went back to my mail route,’’ Mills explained. “My herd of cattle was in good shape because my daddy had been taking care of them. While I was in the Army, I had been elected to the Board of Elders at the Plains Presbyterian Church. I had been the Treasurer at the church before the war.” To give a prospective of what all has happened nationwide since Mills was born on September 12, 1913 when Woodrow Wilson was President, 16 other men have served as President of the USA. Luther E. Hall was Governor of Louisiana when Mills was born. 18 other men and one woman have also served as governor during Mills lifetime. When asked if he remembered much about Huey P. Long, Mills replied; “I was a teenager and then in college while Huey was in office as governor and senator. I went to school at LSU with his son Russell and a friend of mine dated Huey’s daughter Rose. I knew ole Earl Long too.’’ Mills faced a dilemma when he was asked to serve on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Zachary when his Uncle, Dr. Tom Mills retired. “I told them that I would as long as it didn’t interfere with my job as Rural Route 1 mail carrier out of See MILLS at 100 on page 11

G360 Takes a New Approach in Old Industry By James Ronald Skains
“Three of the four men on Mount Rushmore were surveyors at one time in their lives, and the fourth, Teddy Roosevelt, caused many surveyors to be employed with his wide range of National Parks and conservation practices, so I know that we are in an old and honorable occupation,’’ Mark Williams, Professional Land Surveyor, told the Feliciana Explorer. G360, LLC is located at 9502 Main Street in Zachary. Originally formed in May of 2011 in Clinton, G360 LLC moved to its Zachary location in October 2012. They are building a 40’x100’ warehouse behind their office building. Within this building will be a 20’x40’ training room in addition to a planned full instrument service and repair facility. “Our business model is to be a full service supply and support company for the land surveyors, construction personnel, and oil industry that rely on precise positional systems instruments,’’ Don Biggs, a resident of Clinton and one of the two partners

in G360 LLC explained. “Whereas a typical GPS will pinpoint a location to within 20 yards, our GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) instrument will pinpoint a location to within a ½ inch.” Biggs worked for 7 years as the Louisiana Direct Sales representative for Leica Geosystems before starting G360 LLC with Mark Williams. Williams was also with Leica Geosystems for 7 years in their Lawrenceville, Georgia office before returning to his roots in Clinton/Zachary. The Leica Geosystems AG is home based in Heerbrugg, Switzerland. It has been around since 1910. There are two other Leica brands, Leica Cameras AG in Solms, Germany, and Leica Microsystems GmbH
located in Wezler, Germany that are part of the giant Hexagon AG Corporation headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. “In our first two years, we have conducted two seminars on the GNSS systems, one in Nants, France and another 4 week seminar in Baton Rouge for international personnel with the oil and gas industry,” Williams noted. “We want to be more than just a vendor or supplier for our Geomatic customers. We provide not only training with each piece of equipment that we sell but we also provide a unique service in that surveyors and other users of our equipment can call us with their geomatic problems in the field.” See G360 on page 8

Zachary High Cheerleaders Finish Busy Summer, Prepare for Football Season There is more to cheerleading than meets the eye. The Zachary High School Cheerleaders not only cheer at football and basketball games, they represent Zachary High and the Community of Zachary through volunteer service and competitions both locally and nationally. In fact, the cheerleaders were invited to be a part of the Sugar Bowl halftime performance on January 3, 2014. In June, the cheerleaders attended UCA cheer camp at Fort Walton Beach, FL. After a week of hard work, the team placed 1st in sideline and cheer performances, and 2nd in Home Pom and Extreme Routine performances. The team brought home the coveted “whale. This award, a HUGE whale, is presented to the team that was spirited, showed good leadership, and had the most fun at camp. The team also had 6 girls that won All American Cheerleader. corner. The cheerleaders will be selling spirit shirts during the 2nd week of school. They will also be selling spirit tattoos with the Z logo and red poms for the fans at football games this year. They want to personally invite the entire community of Zachary to come out and support our program and cheer on the football team!
Not only did the team compete at camp this summer, they volunteered at First Baptist Church of Zachary with cheer camp. Each summer First Baptist hosts a cheer camp headed up by Amie Stagg. This year the team wanted to help. They know
how much these young girls look up to them, and hope to one day be a Zachary High Cheerleader. What better way to help the next generation of future cheerleaders! The beginning of school and football season is right around the

ence in Geomatics and is a licensed Professional Land Surveyor and Board Certified in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi. He holds a degree in Surveying and Mapping from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn. Williams began his career as a rodman and worked his way up to product manager/staff surveyor at Surveying/Engineering consulting businesses prior to G360. The third member of the G360 team is Barrett Smith, also a resident of Clinton. Smith, who holds a B.S. degree from LSU, began his surveying career as a rodman for surveying Crew chief. He is currently working on obtaining the needed hours in surveying and mapping to sit for the license exam for surveyors. “Although our Geosystem instruments cut most surveying crews down from 3 to 2, these instruments still require a line of sight which means that the old brush hook is still part of surveying,’’ Williams acknowledged. “There are actually a few one-man surveying crews, but with only one person, they are limited to a specific range of tasks they can perform.” “We still carry brush hooks in our inventory along with metal pipes and rods to establish a survey location point of reference,” Williams added. “We also handle flagging, metal detectors, files for the brush hook and even bug spray in our one stop surveyor supplier system. G360 actually has over 2,000 product lines.’’ “We believe that a big market exists in the construction industry as well as the oil and gas industry for our products,’’ Biggs explained. “Our
three most sophisticated or high tech pieces of equipment are the GNNS, the Sprinter 150 M (memory) that is a precision leveling instrument that can be downloaded to an Excel file, and our Rugby 100 LR (long range) instrument. This instrument is exact in both leveling and location up to a 2,000 foot radius.” “Another popular instrument because of what it can do is the Robotic Total Station which calculates and shoots angles and coordinates. However, the first question that I ask a prospective customer is, ‘What is your work flow, and what do most of your jobs entail.’ Once I have that information, then I try to develop the right package of equipment for him to use. I don’t want to sell anyone an instrument that is not going to help them make money.’’ “In our careers as surveyors, or in geomatics, as some like to be called today, we saw a real disconnect between sales, service and follow-up,’’ Williams related. “Too many dealers want to sell you the equipment with a DVD and a manual and let you figure it out. We first want to field train them on how to use the instrument they purchase and then we want to be their resource when they have problems to solve. We want them to think of G360 as their valuable resource. The other employee of the fledging innovative firm is Dory King of Zachary. Dory serves as the accounting manager of the firm. Writer’s note: It seems that the business model that G360 has chosen, a total resource for their product market, is working. It is not an everyday occurrence when a couple of guys from the Clinton/Zachary area conduct seminars in France or even in Baton Rouge for that matter for international clients.
