For the Zachary Broncos football team, players are banking on individual improvements coalescing for a successful 2012 season. Senior offensive lineman Christopher Taylor spent the offseason improving his speed. Along with his drills, he went to college conditioning camps and took it upon himself to spend extra time in the weight room. Taylor is also looking to see how the Broncos’ defense will do
ing on plyometrics,” Scott explained. Plyometrics, or jump drills, build muscle and help explosiveness. Scott said being a starter this season is also extra motivation. The Broncos finished the 2011 season 7-4 with a loss against Acadiana. Head coach Neil Weiner said he has high expectations this season, despite losing 32 seniors. “I have always stressed character and leadership, doing the right things and holding each other account-
job of learning as much as possible. Grant VonRosenberg is starting [at center]. It will be new for him, but I think he’s ready,” Weiner explained. Other players spent their offseason getting stronger. “This summer I wanted to get bigger, faster and stronger … but mostly stronger,” said senior cornerback Nick Maxey. Maxey lifted at school and worked with weight lifting coach Gayle Hatch. This led to Maxey competing in the Junior Olympics in Texas,

against Catholic High School in their first game of the season this Saturday. “They made some big changes, so I want to see how well they do. On offense, I think we have really clicked; and I can’t wait to see it in action,” Taylor said. Senior running back Boston Scott felt his biggest obstacle was break away speed. “I spent a lot of time during the offseason work-

able,” Weiner said. “These are our number one priority.” Weiner said most of the younger players had rotated through to play in other games, so “they are not totally new to the system.” He added, “We have a few new spots to fill, but the guys have been great through spring practice.” “This will be Trey Hills’ first year starting, and he’s done a good
taking gold in the 62 kg, age 16-17 group. The Broncos held a scrimmage against West Monroe and attended Jamboree in Denham Springs last week. Due to Hurricane Isaac, their first regular season game will be against the Catholic High Bears on Saturday, September 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Bronco Stadium.

Silliman Institute in Clinton is building on the momentum that led them to the playoffs last season; the team hopes to contend for the Mississippi Association for Independent Schools, or MAIS, District 6-2A title and beyond on the strength of the arm of senior quarterback Cobb Kelly and a veteran team with seven other senior starters. Silliman has a solid football tradition; it won the Mississippi Private School Association state title in 2001 but has struggled to go deep in the playoffs since then. Last year’s team went 5-5 and 2-2 in district, making a late-season push into the playoffs. The Silliman team graduated 16 seniors last season; but instead of looking at this season as a rebuilding year, third-year coach T.J. Davis has implemented his spread offense and configured a 4-2-5 defense to promote run stoppage behind a strong defensive line. This season the offensive and defensive linemen average 6’1” and 265 pounds with sophomore Jozie Milton tipping the scales at 320 pounds. The linemen are Brady Brian (6-3, 278) and Michael Austin (5-11, 265) along with and Jordan Talley (6-2, 240). “Our returning starters have a hunger that only victory will appease,” Coach Davis said. Silliman Institute has 33 varsity players; many of the starters play both offense and defense.
Seniors Cobb Kelly, Trey Rockforte, Thomas Myles, Hunter Lockhart, Payton Bruckmeir, Wes Hoover, Michael Austin, and Brady Brian are providing leadership for this very young team, according to the position coaches. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Kelly is starting at quarterback for the first time this season and got the chance to grow in spread offense during a series of 7-on-7 games this summer. Kelly is rated as one of the MAIS’ top 40 seniors by the High School Sports in Mississippi website, hssportsms.com. Friday night, the Silliman Wildcats traveled to Liberty, Ms. to beat the Amite Rebels 40-19, improving to 1-1 on the season. Their only loss was 2014 to Brookhaven Academy in the first game of the season. “We made some errors on the field in the first half of the game against Brookhaven, falling behind by 20 points; but we made some half time adjustments and scored 14 unanswered points in the second half. We carried that intensity into Amite and hope to continue throughout the season,” Coach Davis said. This Friday night, Silliman faces arch rival Central Private at their stadium in Central, La. at 7:00 p.m. Central Private is 2-0. “We have a real opportunity for this to be a special season for these student athletes and the Silliman Institute Wildcat family,” Coach Davis said.
