Lane Names Facility for Dr. Martin Hospital’s founding father honored at reception in his honor

Lane Regional Medical Center recognized one of its founding physicians, Dr. Howard L. Martin, with a ribbon cutting, open house, and dedication of the Dr. Howard L. Martin Medical Building on Wednesday, May 22. Lane Wound Center & Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy recently moved from inside the hospital to this newly renovated medical building, located at 4917 West Park Drive on Lane’s campus directly behind Medical Pharmacy in Zachary. Lane Wound Care’s team of nurses provide advanced therapies for most wounds, such as diabetic, non-healing surgical, traumatic and infected wounds, as well as a variety of ulcers needing wound care. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is used on more serious injuries or compromised wounds, providing 100% pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber (the air we breathe is only

21% oxygen). This high pressure dose of oxygen, known as hyperbaric oxygen, greatly increases the amount of oxygen delivered to body tissues by the bloodstream. Dr. Howard Martin is a native of Weyanoke in West Feliciana Parish, and has been practicing a s a General Surgeon since 1958, and joined a group of Doctors to organize Lane Hospital in 1960. He has transitioned the last 13 years into Hyperbaric Medicine field, and now oversees all of Lane Hospitals wound care patients. Wound care and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy provides advanced wound healing, increased oxygen delivery to injured tissue, improved infection control, greater blood vessel formation, preservation of damaged tissues and veins, elimination of toxic substances, and a reduction of gas bubble obstructions in the body.

Hadden Farms: Providing Fresh Produce All Year

The father-son combination of Mike and Bill “W.A.” Hadden, cultivate nearly 100 acres of rich farm land at the northeast corner of Highway 61 and Plains Port Hudson Road. The Haddens have been at this location since 1981 and now offer fresh vegetables to the public at their farm location five days a week including Saturday and Sunday afternoons. “There’s nothing easy about farming,’’ 78 year old Bill Hadden admitted. “You’re up early, go to bed late, worry about the weather and the bugs, but when you see the finished product you are well pleased with your efforts.” Showing off the early squash at Hadden Farms on U.S. 61.

“I like to grow all kinds of vegetables, even the varieties that you don’t see often” Bill acknowledged. “We try to keep fresh mustard greens, turnip greens, and collard greens year round by rotating our fields three or four times a year.’’ “Squash is another one of my favorites, both yellow and white, and we do grow a lot of tomatoes,’’ Bill, an Agricultural Engineer with forty years of service with the LSU Extension Service added. “We try to grow whatever the local markets have a demand for. mitted. “We’ve had to replant our okra, corn and peas, which will mean they will be ready about a month than in normal years later, than in normal years. I don’t know how well our fresh potato crop is going to turn out due to the unusual weather until we dig them in a couple weeks.” “The weather was extremely wet from December through the end of February. Then we had an unusually cool spring with some heavy rains in both April and May. I believe that this has been the toughest year I’ve ever experienced in farming due to changes in weather.’’ Bill Hadden actually started his farming operation near St. Francisville in 1970 with just a few basic vegetables such as tomatoes, okra, squash, peas, and corn. At age 46, in 1980, Bill moved his farming operations to its present location. On this location that the Haddens use for their retail operation is a big old house that dates back over 160 years nestled among several large old oak trees. According to Bill, the oak trees are at least 200 years old. “We just use the house for storage and the front porch for our retail operation,’’ Bill explained. “I don’t think anyone knows exactly how old the house is, but I’m sure that whoever lived here during the Civil War would have heard the guns at Port Hudson.” “Although I have a house in

South Baton Rouge I spend most of my time here at the farm in a trailer,’’ Bill noted. “A farmer has to be close to his crop. Besides growing the vegetables, harvesting them, and selling them is almost a 24 hour a day operation.’’ Bill’s son Mike takes care of the retail operation as well as Hadden’s wholesale operation. Mike was active growing up in the 4-H, winning many ribbons and trophies, and has been helping with the farming since they moved to their present location. “At least three days a week, I’m on the road early delivering our fresh produce around the Baton Rouge Metro area to a lot of the permanent Farm Produce outlets and small grocery stores,” Mike pointed out. “I usually make my wholesale runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. However, sometimes one of our customers will call in Friday night needing certain vegetables and I’ll make an early Saturday morning run. If that happens, I may be a little late in opening up on Saturday mornings.’’ “Our big season is from June to Thanksgiving when we have plenty of our vegetables for sale. We do buy vegetables and fruits from other local sources. Sometimes we will buy things that are non-local just to make sure we can service our customers until our crops come in.” “I’m trying to increase our production of fruits by planting more varieties of trees,’’ Mike added. “We now have peaches, pears, blueberries, figs, Satsuma’s, and oranges

but I want to add varieties like the big blackberries. We are stocking all the trees I mentioned in pots for customers who want to plant their own fruit trees.” “Most of our fig trees have been faithfully producing figs for many years. We have the purple and gold figs developed by LSU plus other varieties,” Mike added. “It seems that people are adding more fruits to their grocery list, so we want to be able to provide a broader range of fruits and vegetables.” Reporters Note: During my growing up years in north Louisiana on a small truck farm, I experienced some of the challenges faced by Hadden Farms in growing vegetables. However, it was always a thrill when my mother would announce “we were going to be eating out of the garden today.” Fresh vegetables are simply those vegetables that you are able to eat within a day or two of when they were harvested. Only a farmer, a cook and a chef know the real value of “fresh.”

The Braves needed to win the last game of the season to be the champions of the 11/12 year old league. They did just that on Thursday, May 16 by beating the Giants 15-0 in 3 innings. They were led by Noah Weston on the mound who threw a perfect game! They also had some big hits for extra bases by Chapman Hornsby, Hunter Millican, and Kevin Spears. Congratulations to all the boys! They worked hard all season long . They were coached by Josh Harrell, Brian Sartin, and Bobby Darbonne. They finished the season with a record of 10-2. Shotwell Receives His Commission Caleb Monroe Shotwell received his commission as a 2nd Lt in the United States Air Force during Louisiana State University’s Joint Commissioning Ceremony for graduating ROTC Seniors on May 16, 2013 at LSU. Caleb graduated with a BA in Electrical Engineering from LSU’s College of Engineering the following day. Caleb was on full academic scholarship from the United States Air Force during his time at LSU. He served as a distinguished leader & officer in both LSU’s Old War Skule of Cadets as well as the Pershing Rifle Corp. Caleb was awarded the “Top Gun” award at his officer field training & also received his golden jump wings for parachute training at the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Caleb attended Silliman Institute in Clinton, LA through seventh grade and then attended University High at Louisiana State University from eighth grade until he graduated from U-High in 2008. His parents are Cindy &

Gary Shotwell of Zachary, LA. He is the grandson of Henry & Jerry Nettles, St. Francisville, LA and the late Lucille Shotwell, Jackson, LA and Ewing Bradley Shotwell, Jr. of San Antonio, TX. Caleb follows the tradition of both of his grandfathers, Henry Monroe Nettles & Ewing B Shotwell Jr into the USAF, both of whom served in the USAF during the Korean Conflict & Vietnam, respectively. Caleb is engaged to Miss Molly Jane Hane of Slidell, LA. Miss Hane also received her commission as a 2nd Lt in the USAF at the same ceremony. Lts Shotwell & Hane are set to be wed in August, 2013 at Hemingbough in St Francisville, prior to reporting to their respective military assignments. Lt Shotwell will report to pilot training at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio Texas in September. He is the youngest brother of Justin Neal Shotwell & Garrett Paul Shotwell, both of whom are fellow LSU alumni.

McCauley and Creel to Wed in June

Mr. & Mrs. Lionel McCauley II of Prairieville and Mr. & Mrs. Bryan Satterwhite of Zachary, are pleased to announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter Samantha Lynn to Justin Blake Creel, son of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Creel of Central. The bride to be is the granddaughter of Lionel and Winnie McCauley of Pride, Rosalie Firmin of Simmesport, William and Pat Satterwhite of Plaquemine, Freddie and Burnie Roussel of Sorrento, and the late William Wheeler of Zachary. The groom elect is the grandson of Jim and Linda Davies of Central, and the late Ivy and Billie Creel of Central. Samantha is currently enrolled at Southeastern Louisiana University in Early Childhood Education and will graduate this December.

Justin recently graduated from Coastal Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science Degree receiving the highest honor, the President’s Award. He will continue his studies at LSU Medical School in Shreveport this Fall. The couple will honeymoon in Jamaica and reside in Shreveport after exchanging their on June 28th.

Ava Grace Buxton is 6 years old, lives in Zachary and attends Central Private School. She is currently the LaPetite World title holder (3-6 year old) for the Our Little Miss Scholarship Pageant. Ava Grace competed against 40 girls from around the country, and was crowned in Jacksonville, Florida last July. Ava has been involved with the New Orleans Coca-Cola community project, Komen Breast Cancer walk,

sponsoring less fortunate families at Christmas, and the Walk from Obesity. Having fulfilled all the requirements set forth by Our Little Miss, Ava Grace will receive scholarship money to go towards furthering her education in the future. The 51st Our Little Miss pageant will be held in New Orleans, this July. Ava Grace will then crown and pass on her reign to another lucky 3-6 year old girl.
