Synopsis

This project centers around the redesign of the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill meeting house located in Harrodsburg, Ky. The main goal for this historical site wass to add a restaurant, bathrooms, and an industrial kitchen. Originally, the building was utilized as a church. Due to this; plumbing, electrical, and other modern requirements and codes were added. The aesthetics of the space will be moody with a historical aspect to call back to the character of the building’s original use.

Mission Statement

This historical site is known for its religous and communal past created by the Shakers. During the process of completing this project, factors such as the history, values, and objects will be taken into consideration. The aesthetics of this space will be dark and natural materials that create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The viewer of the space will be able to enjoy the history of the site while being in a newly renovated and reinvigorated space dining on delicious food.

ADA

In every commercial project, ADA considerations should be at the forefront.

Blocking

As the mission statement states, “The aesthetics of the project will e dark and natural materials that create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.

Within the FF&E board located above, it can be seen that P1, P2, and P3 are examples of a neutral but strong color palette. T1 showases a shaker style and made table that fits the ethos of originality for the design; while items CH1, CH2, CH3, CH4, L1, L2, and CU1 bring a modern flair to the otherwise rustic and historic interior.

FF&E

The FF&E plan below shows where each item is meant to be placed, as well as the finishes. The main dining room is in the center of the interior, while larger tables flank the sides of the center for larger groups. the kitchen lies at the back left of the building and bathrooms on the back right.

Renderings

These photos showcase renderings for the final kitchen design. Notice ADA guideliness and considerations such as the shorter cabinets, toe kicks, side-by-side door fridge, and island with roll under wheelchair space. This kitchen also features the historic shaker blue color.

Design Programming

Overview

Design Programming showcases a programming document centered around a small commercial type business. For this project, I chose a boutique named. “Stained Rain.” Stained Rain is the boutique for fun, functional, affordable, and classic rain wear. Inspired by my own and friend’s experiences in retail stores and how they cater to the idea of a two gender shopping experience. this boutique features a unisex stye store and design. Inspired by the Bauhaus school of design, this boutique takes the values, functions, and aesthetics into consideration. Form follows function, true materials, minimalism, simplicity and effectiveness, and smart use of resources. This boutique relies strongly on utilizing these principles to create an atmosphere that is inviting, comfortable, and steong for its visitors, shoppers, and guests.

Goals

• Create a space that refers to and is inspired by the Bauhaus principles

• Create a space that utilizes the terms “masculine” and “feminine” replacing “men’s” and “women’s”

• The renovation and/or building of the boutique will implement green/eco-friendly materials

Parti

This parti serves as the logo for the boutique. It also showcases the principles and elements of design used within the design of the boutique itself.

6

Background

For this project, I wanted to focus on creating a boutique that gives the sense of being in the Bauhaus era. The Bauhaus style and movement are something that has always interested myself and I felt that it would be an interesting take on what a boutique is. The definition of a boutique according to Merriam-Webster is “a small company that offers highly specialized services or products.” Specifically, for this boutique, I wanted to create a colorful and fun experience for those who visit. The items that are offered are those of higher quality, without entirely breaking the bank. Think IKEA. The design of the store itself will be one that is inviting, intriguing, and focused through design that draws the viewer in through color, design, and shape.

For data collection in this project, I wanted to do it in a way that would focus on the people the boutique is specifically meant for. To collect data for this boutique, I focused on research about what type of questions I should be asking and who to ask as well. For this, I created a small survey for people to take that reffered to my design and the values that I would like my boutuque to possess. The following questions are what I asked.

DataColl ect i

• What are your pronouns

• What retail spaces do you currently shop at?

• What could be improved at these retaol spaces?

• What sort of atmosphere would you like to feel when entering a retail space?

• Does location matter?

• Is quality ot qunatity more important?

• Do vignettes or a sort of set style matter to you personally?

Inspiration Board

E s q u i s s e

By far, the main inspiration for this boutique was the Bauhaus school of design. When figuring what I wanted to create for this boutique, I wanted to create something that would allow for easy interest in creating a space. The photos that are on this PowerPoint are directly inspired by the Bauhaus era, while others are loosely relating back to or fit well with the design. The red chair for example, correlates directly back to Bauhaus while the lights and display shelving will fit well with the design. One of the main parts of this inspiration board is the large and round red rug. I imagine that in each area of the boutique that has a product such as boots or jackets, they would lie within these round areas, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a rug.

Hannegan & Jason Roseberry

1203 East Spring Street

The Roseberry residence is located at 1203 East Spring Street in New Albany, IN. In late September 2022, Hannegan Roseberry came to BW in regards to fixing up their hom e to achieve their dream of the ultimate Modern-Victorian Grandmas-Chic dream. At first, they were just looking for some guidance in terms of what to do for their buckling walls and layera and layers of wallpaper. Over time this project has turned into a labor of love for a 100+ year old house that has hidden a few more secrets than expected. This has all been achieved through sustainable practices, smart use of resources, and an ever growing private collection of art, antiques, and collectibles.

Since September, we have achieved new wallpaper throughout the bottom floor of the main home, new stair runners up the gorgeous staircase, cutom draperies, upholstering family heirlooms, new paint, and fixing buckling walls that seemed to almost be falling down.

The refurbishing of the home has more or less been based around the 4 major wallpapers used for the first floor of the main space. The clients fell in love with with florals of the original 60’s renovation, but hated the pattern. So, we chose 4 that fit the style of each room, use, and pieces/ decor within each room.

Entry

The image above shows what the entry looked like previously. Before our intervention, the wall going up the stairs was buckling, the wallpaper was tattered, torn, and old, the stair runner was red turned maroon, and the lighting was extremely dark.

Now, as seen on the right, we’ve replaced the outdated wallpaper with bright green paint from Sherwin Williams, the red turned maroon carpet with a quadrafoile patterned green wool runner, custom upholstered pieces done with secondhand fabric, and we’ve also created a new gallery going up the stairs to enhance the beauty and simplicity of the space.

11

The back parlor prior was a desolate and unused area that didn’t carry much style or presence. We stepped in with a new paper, custom draperies, custom upholstery, and bright white paint for the ceiling to brighten the previously datk and dingy room. We’ve also put our own BW touch on the space and have given input as to where different items and pieces should go. We used a york wallcovering and serveral pieces of old project fabric for reupholstery.

Back Parlor

The front parlor is the first room on the right that you see when you first walk into entry. Before this room had our BW input, just like the rest of the house previously, it was drab and tired. After our touch, we were able to bring a brightness to what otherwise would have just been a very dark room. This wallpaper is also from York Wallcovering and features a gold foile. More specifically it’s called Managerie Toile. In this room, we were also able to refinish the floors to bring out the gorgeous warm tones of the patchwork hardwood.
