Dear Hillcrest Members, The summer season is off to a great start and I would like to share a few highlights thus far: Clubhouse Remodel In the last edition of the Highlights details were shared regarding the Clubhouse Remodel. The improvements to the facilities are nearly complete. The only remaining project at the time of this writing is the Tennis Center. The new Tennis Pro Shop should be completed in the next couple of weeks and it looks fantastic. If you get a chance, stop by and take a look. The clubhouse dining facilities were re-opened in time for the Memorial Weekend and the golf course renovations have been in full force since early May. Based upon the comments and the overall use of the new facilities, June has produced record revenue numbers. So it appears the enhancements to our club are very popular. Please take a look at the next page to help thank our members who helped make these improvements possible. Finances As mentioned above, the month of June produced record sales numbers and that overall theme has been consistent throughout the year. We have just completed the 3rd quarter of our financial year and the club is in great financial shape. Currently the club operations are out performing the budget and are well ahead of last year’s pace. Each department and the Management Team have really stepped up their efforts this year. Food Minimum As mentioned above, we could not be happier with the clubhouse improvements. Your Board of Directors wants to continue to promote usage and also understands that your opportunities for using your food minimum this past season were limited. Due to these insights, the Board has extended the food minimum until August 31, 2016. Please take a look at these upcoming opportunities to use your remaining food minimum. July 4 Independence Day Celebration July 15 Party on the Patio Shawn Cole July 15 Wine and Nine August 5 Party on the Patio with D*Funk August 19 Glow Ball Golf and Dinner Membership Much of the club’s success is dependent on our overall membership levels. While this past fall we had our typical attrition we have experienced a very positive influx of new members with our spring membership campaign. The clubs overall membership level is just shy of 500 total members. We have over 330 golfing members and 165 social members. There are still a few memberships available before the promotion expires so please encourage those you know to contact me at 402.489.7111 to schedule a tour to learn more about our club. Hillcrest Country Club has truly become the preferred private club for creating extraordinary experiences and memorable stories for families and guest. Enjoy your club and the rest of a great summer! Hillcrest History By Bob Anderson The recent summer opening of the Hillcrest pool seems like a good time to reminisce a bit about this much enjoyed amenity at the club. The pool was not included in the original construction of the clubhouse and golf course in the late 1920s. The pool was the result of a special drive in 1930, as evidenced by the cartoon illustration in this article. The photo, from sometime around 1950, appears to be part of a promotion for what are probably Cushman scooters for 2 riders. Hillcrest enjoyed a close relationship with Cushman Motor Works at that time. I remember hearing about Cushman engineers bringing their latest golf course equipment out of the Club to see how it would work in a real life situation. And, in return, the Club would get free use of some of the equipment. I believe Cushman was among the first in the country to build riding golf cars. They built a unique 3 wheeled vehicle that had an obvious tendency to tip over if not operated cautiously. In the rear of the picture, courtesy of fellow historian Jim McKee, you can see the long gone “high board. After many years of use it was determined that the pool was not deep enough for a board of such height. Too bad. It was fun to watch and see who was brave enough to jump, or dive head first, from that height. Except for the lowering of the high board the pool remains much as it was originally constructed. We are fortunate to be able to continue to enjoy it.

Hillcrest Highlights Golf Course Landscapes Unlimited has been awarded the contract for our practice range and other course updates. With 98th Street construction on the east side of our course, hole #4 will undergo modifications such as added fairway bunkers, irrigation, and forestry changes, as well as a new tee box. For the remainder of 2015 and the start of the 2016 golf season, it will play as a par three. New cart paths connecting holes #7, #8, and #9, along with new paths at #17 and #18 will be added as well. Additional improvements include a new greenside bunker at hole #7.
Hole #4 rendering given on the right.
Driving Range and Practice Facility Range improvements include: • Short-game practice area • Larger variety of target greens Sustainability throughout the summer season Doubling of the range tee box size
Short-game practice facility rendering given above.
Remodel Update!!! Restaurant And Bar Area
Enjoying an afternoon by the pool is a popular pastime for our members. That’s why we’re excited to announce the opening of our restaurant and bar area to the pool deck. This will allow easier access to food and beverages, without sacrificing pool time. By having a more open floor plan on the east side of our building, we will make the poolside experience even better.

Dear Members, Our Member-Member Championship was contested in May. Congratulations to our Champions, Joe D’Amico and Chris Ober, who’s score of 129 gave them a one shot victory over team Dale Roehrs and Bob Cirone. (See the full list of flight winners in this issue). The Women’s Solheim Cup was again closely contested. Strong play over the weekend by two teams set the stage for a down to the wire finish. The winning team of Ashley Tenopir and Jessica Tomasek defended their 2015 title and shot a two day total of 139. They won a scorecard playoff over runners up Karen Ogle and Michelle Ober. The Hillcrest Masters was held in June and it was very competitive! Defending Champion Spencer Hilsabeck is again Hillcrest’s 2016 Masters Champion. Spencer posted scores of 74 and 72 for a 146 total. This was good for a seven shot victory. Chris Ober and Neal Roehrs battled for 2nd and 3rd place with Ober edging out Roehrs by one shot to finish runner up. The net division was just as exciting with Mark Funkhouser winning the Players Flight over Mike Surls. Mark’s two day net total of 148 was good for a 4 shot victory. (See results in this issue). On June 4th, the local qualifier for Drive, Chip, & Putt was held at Hillcrest Country Club. Great job to these participants. Tommy Noel, Hunter Hall, Eli Carpenter, Isaac Carpenter, Noah Carpenter, Caleb Shirk, Scott Nolte, Aliana Agnew, Carson Agnew, Daniel Noel, Parker Griffin, Emma Moss, Max Moss, Kaitlyn Dumler, Addison Shirk. Congrats to Kaitlyn Dumler for advancing to regionals at Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln. Great job to these participants. Dear Members, Summer is off to a great start! The pool area looks fabulous, and we have had great weather to start our swim season.
It was fun to see Kris Hoffman, the Head Coach for the Nebraska Diving Club, and Natasha Chikina, the Head Diving Coach for the University of Nebraska, working with our divers at the Pre-Season Dive Clinic. We also had the unique opportunity to have Angi Stilwell, who is a Level Three certified, United States Synchronized Swimming Coach, teach several of our swimmers a short routine to perform at the Celebrity Golf Tournament Poolside Dinner. I am hopeful that there will be enough interest, that we can continue to offer synchronized swimming instruction, on a private or group basis throughout the summer. Anyone who is interested, should contact me. (Grandchildren are welcome to participate too!) The Father’s Day Cardboard Boat Race and Water Balloon Toss were very entertaining – congratulations to Darin and Collin Rich, winners of this year’s race!
Swimming is such an important life skill to master. Summertime lessons naturally prove to be most successful, since many people spend additional time in the water at this time of year. We offer 2 more sessions of group lessons (July 11 – 21 and July 25 – August 4). The last session will be offered at 11:15 a.m., since swim team will be done practicing. Private swim or dive lessons are also available for both children and adults, and can be scheduled in the morning, before the pool opens, or whenever your schedule allows. The swim and dive teams are looking good again this year, with over 140 participants. The swimmers are so excited to be returning to Bob Devaney Pool for their Championship Meet. In order to prepare for the Championship Meet, we will be holding a special session of swim team stroke clinic, July 6 th – 8th. If you are looking ahead to possibly joining the swim team next summer, keep in mind that swimmers need to pass Level Three Lessons at Hillcrest, or be able to swim 25 yards, continuously, to participate. We recommend that children start swim team at age six or seven, although I have seen some very successful swimmers who did not start swimming competitively until they entered high school. Encourage your children to participate in our annual Youth Triathlon, on Saturday, July 9 th. Distances are short, it’s a fun course, and participation ribbons, as well as trophies for the top male and female finisher in each age category will be awarded.

A MESSAGE THE AQUATICS DIRECTOR GeneralFROM Manager
If anyone is interested in swimming a few laps in the morning, please let me know!
Please remember to accompany your guests and sign them in at the sign-in desk at the pool. To ensure a safe season at the pool, we request that members with younger swimmers keep a close eye on them while using the baby pool, as we do not have a guard directly supervising that pool. Please keep in mind that a fecal accident in either pool may close both pools for approximately 24 hours, and will cause increases in labor and chemical expenses – not to mention disappointment for our members wanting to use the facility. Talk to your children about being safe around the water, and stay close if they are not strong swimmers. See you at the pool! Jeanette Keller Aquatics Director

Dear Members: Well time has finally come! We have been anxiously waiting the finish of the new tennis area. First, I would like to thank our staff, for being flexible while we have been without an area to operate in. I would also like to thank our members for being patient this year, through the renovation. Despite limited facilities, participation numbers are as good as last year and we have had more new tennis program members involved this year, compared to previous years. There are a number of people who deserve recognition for their time and support through this project. First, I would like to acknowledge Andy Reetz for organizing and arranging all the different trades to make this project possible. Also, a special thanks to Don Peterson, who was a great advocate while on the tennis board. Don has spent many hours assisting as the general contractor and has moved this project along rapidly with the help of our members and companies below.
Finally, we have had an incredible amount of help from our members donating time, building products and services. These Individuals, listed below, have helped to ensure this project stayed within our budget and produced such a great facility for our membership.

As mentioned in the General Manager’s letter, we could not be happier with the clubhouse improvements. Your Board of Directors would like to continue to promote usage and also understands that your opportunities for using your food minimum this past season were limited. Due to these insights, the Board has extended the food minimum until August 31, 2016. Please take a look at these upcoming opportunities to use your remaining food minimum.
