Dear Members, Looking back over the summer, I am amazed by all our accomplishments. Looking forward I’m excited for the opportunities ahead. While other clubs are struggling to live up to their members expectations I am happy to report that our club is strong, our membership is great and our management team is amazing. Our club is strong! With membership at a healthy level of nearly 500 families and an average age of 48 years old, our club is experiencing unprecedented revenue and reliability. For the first time in Hillcrest Country Club history our Food Department has surpassed $1M in sales, paired with the Beverage Department performing at a record setting pace, it is clear our club is young and vibrant. Our membership is great! We have members who love our club, and they aren’t afraid to show it. It is because of members supporting our club that we are all able to share in this fantastic club experience. These projects would not have been able to be finished this year without the support of our amazing membership: the Verdin Clock, “A” street entrance signage, 12th Tee renovation, Bunny’s Alley update, Driving Range refresh and the new golf course signage/150 yard markers. Our Management team is amazing! I am just a small part of the Hillcrest team that makes every members experience as memorable as possible. My Clubhouse team of Kim Cotton, Allison Boyd and Dustin Fuhrman do a better job than five managers at our neighboring club. Their devoted years of experience and love for our membership shouldn’t go un-noticed. Chef, Jeramy Behn and our Grounds and Greens Superintendent, Brian Hellbusch, are my one-man workhorses, driving their teams to regularly do more with less. In our industry, we have extremely efficient Kitchen and Grounds and Greens operations. My experts, Mike Brown, Jerad Palmer, Jeanette Keller and Sam Nelson share nearly 70 years of Hillcrest Management experience, this is an unbelievable amount of knowledge that our club should be very proud and excited to have. I regularly consult my experts to ensure our club remains a trendsetter in the Lincoln community.

Be sure to let your friends and family know how great your club is, and how exciting it is to be a part of the Hillcrest family. If you have any questions on membership please contact me via email ztyson@hillcrestcountryclub.com or by phone 402.489.7111. Sincerely,

A Message From the General Manager

19th Annual Dorothy Schwartzkopf

PINK RIBBON Golf Events It was a beautiful sunny day for the 19th Annual Dorothy Schwartzkopf Pink Ribbon Golf Scramble, hosted by Hillcrest Country Club, on Thursday, June 15. With a record number of 36 teams again this year to support Susan G Komen Rally for the Cure, the event lived up to its history of being a fun-filled afternoon of golf, food, and winning. The theme for the day was a remembrance of Dorothy's generous and kind spirit. To commemorate this, Dorothy's family provided a ball marker for each golfer with the special message and reminder to all..."To stop and smell the roses." The overall winning team of Vena Alesio, Jana Turner, Jamie Waterford, and Katie Wilson posted an awesome score of 8 under, 64! The highlight of the dinner was a tribute to Dorothy Schwartkopf and a brief thanks from her daughter Christy Schwartkopf thanking all of the golfers and guests for participating in the event. Karen Daneu, Executive Director for Susan G Komen Nebraska, was able to join us and share a very inspirational message on the cutting-edge progress that our donations are possible through the dollars that are being contributed to research. In conjunction with the Men’s Rally for the Cure held on June 14, we raised over $9,200….75% of our event proceeds will stay in Nebraska and the other 25% will help to fund national research. Committee Co-Chairs Deb Griffith and Tammie Burns want to thank all of the participants, many who have golfed in this event annually for supporting Rally for the Cure. We also want to thank Southeast Cancer Center for their $500 donation, the Hillcrest Ladies Golf Association, and our numerous hole sponsors, flight prize and raffle prize donors for making this a very successful event. We’d also like to recognize our committee members Sharon Votava and Laura Runge, Patti Daehling, Hillcrest Country Club Director of Golf Mike Brown and staff, Photographer Sara Hakel and event day volunteers Cheryl Ober, Nick Vuko Jr, Nick Vuko Sr, Scott Barnhill, Rex Schultze, Jerry Regelean, and Charlie Borner.

Hillcrest History By Bob Anderson The recent rebuilding of the Bunny Richards memorial area on the fourteenth tee causes me to give thought to just how many of our newer members have any idea who this “Bunny” guy was and why he deserves such a tribute. It has been quite a few years since I wrote about the guy who deservedly became known as “Mr. Hillcrest”. Bunny was the Hillcrest Pro for over 34 years, and that in itself is quite an achievement. Good people come and go at the club, as we have recently experienced. I had the good fortune to know Bunny personally when he was the pro, and also when he was the pro emeritus. After his second retirement, Bunny spent quite a bit of time on the course playing the game. He had an Arnold Palmer type of personality and I never met a person who didn’t like him or didn’t like his work at the Club. Here’s the history of Bunny: Bunny was in the Army Air Corp., stateside, during WWII and upon discharge came to Hillcrest in December of 1945 as BOTH, Club Pro and Club Manager. Membership at the club during the war years was pretty low, as one might understand. Prior to his military service Bunny was the head pro at Manhattan Kansas Country Club from 1938 to 1942, when he entered the Army. Prior to that, he was the assistant pro at Indian Hills, in Kansas City from 1933 to 1937. Bunny and his wife Margaret, who he met when she took a lesson from him at the Manhattan Club, resided in the apartment on the second floor of the Hillcrest clubhouse, where the office staff are now located. They ran the whole place. Membership increased rapidly, probably due to the return of a lot of Lincolnites and to Bunny’s leadership. By mid-1946 membership had soared to 330, and by 1949 reached nearly 450. Bunny was a pretty good player in his younger years, as you might expect, having won a couple of tournaments in Texas, but work came first and he didn’t play a lot until retirement. Bunny retired 2 times. First in 1979 and then in 1983, When Charlie Borner assumed the role of Pro. A total of 34 years, not many can claim that longevity in the business. After just 15 years at Hillcrest, Bunny became so beloved that the membership ran a successful drive to raise funds to give Bunny a brand new 1960 automobile AND a new Remington shotgun and a watch. Margaret was also recognized with a new 24 inch TV (that was BIG in 1960). The pictures here show the committee that organized the drive and presented the gifts to the Richard. The event was reported in the November 1960 issue of “Professional Golfer” where particular note was made of the letter Bunny received, from President Dwight D. Eisenhower, congratulating him on his special recognition. So there you have it, and I hope you can see why we have a golf tournament every memorial day in memory of William J. “Bunny” Richards. Thanks to Jean Schoonveld, for providing me with this picture and other information, from her father, Howard Linch’s memorabilia. Pictured are L. to R.: are members of the Bunny Richards Day Committee with Bunny. Roy Kirch, President H.C.C., Vern Walker, Bunny Richards, Dr. Dich Marshall, Howard Linch and Ralph Tyler Sr.

Dear Members, What a great summer this has been! In July, former Hillcrest Swim Coach, Erin Dolan, dropped by for our annual Youth Triathlon, to talk to the participants about her experiences competing in triathlons around the world for the United States – it was great to see her again. We also hosted a very fun “Hammerhead Relays” meet with Firethorn, Yankee Hill and Lincoln Country Club. Our swimmers and divers finished strong and we celebrated their successful seasons with a pool party and banquet. In August, we tried our skills at log-rolling and paddleboarding. It was fun for all to try and very entertaining to watch! We were again, so fortunate to be able to compete at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Pool for our league championship swim meet this year. Our swimmers swam with a lot of heart, winning 51 of 78 events, and setting all 11 of the new meet records! They are the league champions for the eighth year in a row! We are so lucky to have such a talented bunch of swimmers. It is always neat to see them succeed in the more challenging events too! A big thank you to our 15 – 18 year old swimmers, who provide great leadership for the team. We are so grateful to have these swimmers continue to participate and make our program strong. Congratulations to our 2017 “Waterbug” award winners – Elizabeth Vieyra, Owen Lewis, Sabrina Gove, Porter Loch, Emma Moss, Ross Gamet, Abby Lewis, Jake Buresh, and MaKynlie Cade. Please mark July 16th on your calendars for 2018 – next year’s championship swim meet date! If you missed the banquet, please pick up your awards in the pool office. Our divers had an outstanding Championship Meet. They won every category they competed in, swept the 9-10 girls, and Max Moss had a new meet record! Congratulations to Maddie Paup, Lexi Tempelmeyer and Sam Artz for their first place finishes! Thank you to our awesome swim and dive team parents for all of your dedication and support of our programs – you are the best! There is a group of morning lap swimmers, that swim on weekday mornings, so if you are interested, please join us! (Call 489-1840, or email bk04745@windstream.net, if interested.)

Preschool lessons are available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, through September 14 th. Both youth and adult private swim lessons are available through the end of the season as well. Please check Lost and Found in Teencrest for anything you may have left at the pool this summer! Let’s hope for some good weather so that we can all enjoy the pool for a few more weeks! See you at the pool!
