Introduction The thirteenth edition of "The Coke System" depicts Coca-Cola’s fully refranchised U.S. bottling system after four years of significant transition. This was the company’s largest refranchising initiative to date, covering 60 territory transitions, 350 distribution centers, more than 50 production plants, at least 55,000 employees and more than 1.3 billion cases of volume. CocaCola North America’s “21st Century Beverage Partnership Model,” as the company refers to the new

system, includes collaborative system governance for functions including production, procurement and information technology. The overhaul that led to today’s system actually began in 2010, however. It was that year when the Coca-Cola Company acquired nearly 80% of the U.S. bottling system in order to modernize and streamline production and distribution of their bottled and canned products, with the intent to eventually sell their stake in the system back to the bottlers. That refranchising process was finalized late last year; you can find the completed system in section 1 of this book. Along with the complete system maps, also included in this version of The Coke System is 1) a map to show the latest round of transitioned territories since the twelfth edition of The Coke System was published; 2) an updated list of the top-10 bottlers and a map of their territories; 3) a map of the production per capita for the top-10 bottlers; 4) updates to where the top-3 bottlers carry Coca-Cola brands and Dr Pepper and where they compete with the top Pepsi bottlers; 5) the latest directory of U.S. Coke bottlers, including: headquarters location, contact details and key executives; 6) the complete listing of Coke plants across the U.S., including ownership and location information. All of the maps in this book are produced using software that pinpoints territory boundaries down to the Zip Code level, allowing for precision of information and an endless possibility of uses.
