DECEMBER 2024
Cheshire CHATTER
Is there a better county in the UK when it comes to Christmas?
Ashley Rudd states our case
In December, I’ll be soaking up all of Cheshire’s beauty and charm – it always gives me serious The Holiday vibes!
There’s just something magical about this county during the festive season, especially with that crisp winter air making the rolling hills and ancient woodlands even more stunning between iconic spots like Tatton Park and Delamere Forest. One of the best parts of December in Cheshire is how easy it is to connect with people. I plan on taking brisk countryside
walks and enjoying a hot drink while enjoying the views with friends.
Every holiday season is complete with planning a proper Christmas feast, and The Hollies Farm Shop (theholliesfarmshop. co.uk) is the perfect place to stock up on gourmet goodies. Their selection of local meats, cheeses, and indulgent snacks is unbeatable. It’s not just shopping: visiting The Hollies is a full sensory experience –think the smell of freshly baked goods and the sight of beautifully wrapped treats.
December is also my go-to time for reflection and planning. I’ll set aside moments to review what I’ve achieved in 2024 and map out my goals for 2025. It’s the perfect time to dive into long-term strategy, focusing on new trends and refining how I can best support my clients going into 2025.
Of course, even though things slow down in December, the work doesn’t stop. I’ll still work remotely while in Cheshire, using the quieter days to keep projects ticking along and stay connected with my team. I’ll do it with a festive twist – working by the fireplace, Christmas tunes in the background, and the scent of cinnamon and pine everywhere.
Cheshire’s the perfect place for me to recharge, get inspired, and look ahead to 2025 with fresh energy.
Three things this month…
CHESTER CHRISTMAS MARKETS
Between the hand-cra ed goods and delicious treats, it’s my goto spot for unique Christmas gi s – and if I’m honest, I’ll mostly be meeting up with friends for festive drinks all month long!

his is not a musical.
Milton Jones is tone deaf and has no sense of rhythm, but at least he doesn’t make a song and dance about it. He has more important things to discuss. Like giraffes… and tomatoes. You might know him from Mock the Week, or that time he stood for the Scottish National Party, fought a hard campaign, but in the end had to respect the wishes of the people of Cardiff. trafalgartickets.com
Enjoy a celebration of good humour and creative risk with new exhibition, Worst Record Covers in the World
Some of the most dreadful – and unintentionally hilarious – record sleeves ever conceived are to go on display at Warrington Museum this month. Collector Steve Goldman will present ‘The Worst Record Covers in the World’ at the historic venue, running until 19th January. Steve’s weird and wonderful set includes around 500 obscure albums and singles that he has collected over seven years. For a record to make his collection, it simply has to be ‘sufficiently bad’ and make him laugh. Usually this is due to a concept or design choice on the cover that has gone horribly wrong, inadvertently making it very amusing or cringe-worthy. But there are rules too. The artworks can’t be disgusting, gory, violent, sexist, homophobic, transphobic or racist. Just good, clean fun. It all started for Steve three decades ago when he bought Roadstar by Peter Rabbitt in a bargain bin for 10p. He says: “I picked it up simply because it had such an extraordinarily bad cover – rabbits picked out of a hat, with the band’s awkward faces amateurishly superimposed. I said to my family: ‘I think I’ll collect crap record covers…’”
Steve did just that, and a er amassing hundreds of records from Discogs and charity shop trawls, he started to exhibit the collection up and down the country a few years ago. From the bizarre to the curious, the record sleeves will have a new lease of life on display at Warrington Museum.

Liverpool-born Andrew Gower has impressed on the small screen and is now set to wow us on the musical stage, with a little Christmas football thrown into the mix
It’s quite the eclectic experience interviewing Andrew Gower. During the course of our chat, we flit from acting in some of the biggest shows on TV, to his own band, and even throw in some football chat too about Everton FC.
At the time of writing, the Liverpool-born creative is excited as his band, Gusta son, have just released the single On Broadway, taken from their new album coming out in early 2025. The band was formed in 2020 along with Andrew’s lifelong friend and guitarist, James Webster, and the music has been a long time in the making. “Music was always around my house growing up,” Andrew smiles. “Whether it was my Grandad’s Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett collection, my Mum and Dad’s love for George Michael, or my two older brothers introducing me to The Stone Roses, it was a noisy and musical house. The album that changed everything was The White Album by The Beatles.
“We’ve always written stories,” he continues about the collaboration with James Webster. “Whether it’s about where we are from or where we wanted to go. It’s always centred around stories. I guess my lens as a teenager may have been a little more romantic than it is these days. We do like finding the extraordinary in the ordinary everyday tales. That’s never changed.”
Acting, however, soon took centre stage, with a key role in ITV’s Monroe, starring James Nesbitt and Sarah Parish. “I initially auditioned for James Nesbitt’s son (several times),” Andrew explains. “I received a call from my agent saying ‘your energy is just way too old to play Jimmy’s son’ (long pause)... BUT they want to o er you a regular role as Doctor Mullery. A trainee heart surgeon’. I learnt so much on that job. I had no idea how television/ film sets worked. It was a baptism of fire. Oh and I also got to witness open heart surgery at St Thomas’s Hospital London as research. That will stay with me forever.”
He has gone on to star in some of TV’s most acclaimed shows, including Black Mirror and Carnival Row. “ Two incredible shows,” he nods. “At the helm show runners at their very best: Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones of Black Mirror, Erik Oleson and Travis Beacham of Carnival Row. With both of these shows I was lucky enough to have the backdrop of two incredible countries Iceland (Black Mirror) and Czech Republic/ Prague (Carnival Row). There’s something beautiful about filming a series in a new country. It helps me get lost in the world.” Andrew will soon be seen on our screens in new detective drama, Ellis, which premiered at the end of October. “It stars Sharon D Clarke at the helm as DCI Ellis. I play her right hand man DS Harper. It’s a hard hitting family drama centred around the complex working relationship of these two detectives. The small towns of the Peak District serve as a really unique backdrop for these two hour films (three episodes). The cases inspire unique
behaviour from both characters, which is what I always love in a script. It’s exciting for me to play a part in setting up a new detective show in a country that really knows how to make a detective drama.”
Around the same time, North West music lovers will have had the chance to catch Gusta son live, as they were due to play gigs (at the time of writing) on 1st November at The Jacaranda Club Liverpool and 15th November at Deaf Institute Manchester. “Having been lucky to work consistently as an actor since graduating from drama school 15 years ago, I’ve told some incredible stories on TV, film and stage, led by some of the best storytellers in the ‘industry’. Gusta son gives me the opportunity to tell my own tales,” Andrew says.
“I think there’s a whole audience out there that haven’t really had music written for them for a while now. We wanted to give people an original vintage record in a modern algorithmic world. Whilst recording the album with our producer Craig Potter (Elbow), Bear McCreary, Sir Ben Kingsley and so many others, this was our mantra. We really don’t want to pander or spoon feed our audience.”
On Broadway is a case in point. It portrays a vintage tale of the beautiful cruelty of a New York winter. The song journeys from the fires in Bushwick to the theatrical injustice of a Broadway show. With a textured backbone of ageless brass and the dramatic climax of an old battered piano, Gusta son open with a timeless track to soften the blues of the modern
algorithmic world. “I hope that Gusta son’s sound cannot be summed up in a sentence or even a paragraph,” Andrew adds. “I worry when any band can be summarised. Ultimately, we are a northern band full of songwriters. Each song is its own movie and experience. We don’t waste lyrics or write for the sake of it sounding great, or something under two minutes to get on Tik Tok or the radio. I guess our one consistent is my voice and the fact we are making music for an audience – not for ourselves.”
Their album Black & White Movie will be released in March, but before then is Christmas. “I will be visiting family in Liverpool,” Andrew says on his plans.
“My Mum and Dad both live over the water in Wallasey/New Brighton, but we’ll no doubt all be in Liverpool city centre for dinner and drinks. Liverpool and Manchester both have a special energy about them at Christmas. One o events in their incredible cathedrals, the lights down Bold Street and some of my favourite pubs are full with story tellers and characters everywhere.”
There is also the small matter of plenty of football too, and a chance to catch up with his beloved Everton FC.
“It’s a pivotal season for the club with it being our last season at Goodison Park,” he says. “Moving into our beautiful new stadium at Bramley-Moore Docks as a Premier League team is crucial. Coincidentally, Gusta son are releasing a single with Everton FC to pay homage to the last season at the iconic Goodison Park. It’s called Lights Under Goodison and will be released on 29th November. This will be a week before the last ever Merseyside Derby at the ‘Old Lady’.”
From acting to music and football, and bringing those passions together, Andrew Gower is all set for an exciting 2025. Expect the unexpected.

QUEEN ICE
Manchester’s Catherine Tyldesley is well-used to playing dramatic roles in Coronation Street - and next up is something wicked in pantomime
In the She eld Lyceum this Christmas, Snow White will be entertaining audiences with a fun-packed, family pantomime from Friday 6 DecemberSunday 5 January. We chatted to cast members, Coronation Street star and Manchester local Catherine Tyldesley, Matthew Croke and Damian Williams.
Q You are no stranger to She eld Damian, with this being your 17th panto at the Lyceum. How does it feel to be back?
A Damian: Do you know what, I love She eld, particularly at Christmas-time. I say this a lot but the atmosphere in the city at Christmas is amazing. The people and the city; there’s such a great buzz and when they come to the panto – listening to the audience in the auditorium over the tannoy when I’m in my dressing room – it’s such a great atmosphere and I love it. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else at Christmas.
Q Catherine, this will be your first panto at She eld Theatres. Have you ever been to or worked in She eld before?
Do you have any memories here?
A Catherine: I haven’t, but I am determined to make brand new memories in She eld. I’ve got a lot of friends in She eld and I know it’s a very warm place – I can see that already, the people are lovely, so I’m very excited.
Q Matthew, you have performed in She eld before, but across the road in the Crucible. Can you tell us about your time here, and are you looking forward to being back in She eld?
A Matthew: Yes! Well, I’m actually from She eld and having worked at the Crucible and now at the Lyceum, I just feel very, very, very excited because it’s my hometown and I’ve always heard that the pantomime is absolutely fantastic, so to be part of it here really means a lot to me. I’ve got lots of friends and family who are really excited too.
Q Catherine, many people will know you from the Cobbles or Strictly, but how are you preparing to channel your
inner Wicked Queen for this role?
A Catherine: I’m tuning into hormonal Cath, I think that’s probably the angriest I get! I have always wanted to do panto, I’m a huge fan and it’s been on my bucket list for many, many years, so I’m very excited to release the evil-ness!
Q This year Damian, you are playing Nurse Nellie. Who is Nurse Nellie in the story, and do you have much in common with her?
A Damian: Nurse Nellie is the nurse of Snow White, she looks after her like her nanny. Well, that’s what she was when I did this before so I hope she’s still the same as the Nurse Nellies I’ve played in the past… but yes, she’s back!
Q What does panto mean to you? Have you performed in many pantos before this one?
A Matthew: It means it’s Christmas which is one of my favourite times of year. I’ve done panto a couple of times before in Bradford and Manchester – so up north and close-ish – and I just have so much

fun. It brings a lot of joy, and who doesn’t want a bit of joy? Especially at Christmastime. So if it’s anything like before – and this time in my hometown She eld – then it’s gonna be a good’un. Loads of joy and loads of pantomime silliness – I can’t wait.
A Catherine: This is my first o cial panto. We used to go every year as children and to me it’s a core memory every Christmas.
Q You must spend a lot of time in the city over Christmas – where are your favourite local places to visit between shows?
A Damian: Obviously Division Street is a great place to go for an evening, great restaurants and bars. Particularly now Foresters is back in its original place –what was Gatsby’s – great food in there. I also like to go to Bungalows and Bears. But for breakfast, I always go to Tamper. Matthew: Ecclesall Road, close to town, is really nice to go to. You probably know Damian; you’ve been coming here for 17 years!
Q Matthew, She eld is your hometown. Where are your favourite local places
to revisit whilst you’ll be here?
A Matthew: I have a theatre and dancing school here in Wincobank and I’m looking forward to being there more. Because I’m going to be in She eld for the whole run of Snow White, I’m going to see my students and teach and do lots of things with my sister there. And I love the theatre district here, it’s so nice! Every time I come back home there’s something new that makes me feel really proud of She eld, because I feel like it’s got better and better every year since being a kid.
Q Finally, can you sum up Snow White in a few words?
A Damian: Snow White is going to be spectacular, funny and magical!
A Catherine: It’s hilarious, the songs are phenomenal and the comedy will literally have you crying. In terms of entertainment, you couldn’t wish for a better night out.
A Matthew: Joyful, heart-warming and a proper right good night out.

“We’ve made the light trail even longer and packed it with exciting new elements,” Heidi adds. “There’ll be more animal lanterns than ever before and neverbefore-seen interactive puppets including energetic meerkats, colourful peacocks and playful snow leopards – all joined by many of the family favourites from years gone by that people have grown to love.
“Returning for 2024 will be our illuminating sea of light, synchronised to an incredible soundscape of festive songs, creating a mesmerising spectacle of light and sound, plus an impressive fire garden, rainbow bridge and gigantic pea-lit lanterns. It also wouldn’t be the festivities without greeting the big man himself, Father Christmas, as he works away in his workshop with his elves as they make all of the presents.

ONE to WATCH
When
it comes to luxury timepieces, Charles Burns is the man to know. Here he tells Absolutely about family expertise, an historic store and why his business is di erent from the rest
Q Was it a given that you would follow in the family business footsteps?
A Not so, all my relatives went other ways. That being said both my Grandfathers were working watchmakers, which is incredibly rare outside of specific regions in Switzerland.
Q Tell us a bit about the history of your store?
A The store was established in 1897, making it 127 years old this year and having served Manchester as one of its oldest family jewellery stores in three separate decades. Sure, some of the inventory we carry and sell has changed, but the general trading is very similar to how it would’ve been back in the day.
Q When did you launch WatchMarketplace and what inspired it?
A I launched WatchMarketplace in 2017, just before I went on The Apprentice The inspiration was pretty simple, I love watches and wanted to be involved in the industry in some capacity. Using my
knowledge, experience and expertise seemed like a great fit to start the business.
Q How do you want to be different?
A We o er a service that is unmatched, we are more concerned with the client getting the best deal/service even if that means going elsewhere.
Q Typically, how does your service work?
A More often than not clients come to us and ask for a price on their watch for us to purchase or they ask us to find/source a watch for them to add to their collection.
Q Do you buy any kind of watch to then sell on, or do they need to be a certain level/design?
A We are more than happy to look at any timepiece.
Q What kind of pre-owned luxury watches do you currently have on sale?
A The inventory changes all the time, please WhatsApp my team on +447539430168 for more information.
Q Do you have a favourite design of watch?
A Not really, if I like it, I like it!
Q This will appear in our Christmas issue, so still time for someone to use your services to buy or sell a watch?
A Sure, reach out to the team and we will for sure help you.
Q What does 2025 hold in store for you?
A More trading with great clients and partners, building a really exciting business.

“IT BECAME KNOWN FOR OFFERING A MICROSEASONAL MENU”
A DELICIOUS DECADE
Ten years since launching, Chef’s Table now has a new site in Chester, a sister restaurant and grand ambitions. Absolutely uncovers its story
If you are still looking for the perfect venue for a Christmas meal with friends or family, the answer may well be found in Chester. Chef’s Table o ers a contemporary farm-to-table dining experience, with a seasonally driven menu that fuses the freshest locally sourced ingredients with bold, global flavours and experimental culinary techniques. Founded by head chef Liam McKay, the Chef’s Table concept o ers an accessible approach to fine dining, providing guests with expertly crafted dishes in a refined yet relaxed setting.
THE STORY SO FAR
Debuting in 2014, Chef’s Table’s first iteration was a small restaurant with big ambitions. Tucked down a side street in historic Chester, the restaurant quickly became a favourite with locals and visitors. Their elevated contemporary dishes that utilise locally sourced produce paired
with attentive service instantly drew the attention of both visitors and locals.
Gaining recognition from major restaurant bodies, Chef’s Table was awarded two AA Rosettes within the first two months and was recommended in the Michelin Guide within just six months of opening. The restaurant was also selected as Diner’s Choice at the National Restaurant Awards in both 2018 and 2019. Throughout the years, Chef’s Table has also been consistently recognised at various regional awards. Initially conceived as a café catering to those in the hospitality industry, due to national acclaim, Chef’s Table grew to focus on its á la carte o ering implementing a more refined approach. Paired with a local, organic micro-farm since opening, menus were created from daily produce deliveries. The frequently evolving menus led to Chef’s Table becoming one of the first restaurants in Chester o ering a microseasonal menu incorporating local produce. Due to increased demand, in 2023 the decision was made to expand to a larger venue. The restaurant now resides on Pepper Street and features contemporary interiors, a spacious dining room able
to accommodate more covers and an upgraded state-of-the-art kitchen. The new venue provides an improved dining experience for guests, with the large kitchen facilitating a more refined o ering as well as seasonal tasting menus.
Since moving to the new site, Chef’s Table has strengthened its relationship with partnered local farm, Growing at Field 28, who they work closely with, where the annual growing schedule informs the restaurant’s menu. The new location has also seen the inception of critically acclaimed sister restaurant and neighbour, twenty eight.
THE MENU
The restaurant’s seasonal menu adopts a classic a la carte approach with service embracing a friendly, fine dining style. Inspired by global flavours, dishes utilise fresh, regionally sourced ingredients in inventive ways combining classical culinary techniques with contemporary gastronomic innovations. Alongside the a la carte menu, Chef’s Table also provides a lunch o er and an 8-10 course seasonal tasting menu highlighting seasonal produce and game. The current menu includes butter poached furikake Scottish scallops, grilled stone bass, tempura soft shell crab with an Indian-inspired sweetcorn and globe artichoke chaat masala broth. Also on the menu, featuring East Asian flavours, roast togarashi spiced beef fillet, wagyu neck slow cooked in XO, wagyu spring
“THEY UTILISE HIGH-QUALITY LOCAL PRODUCE”
roll, pu ed rice with Tokyo turnips and fresh UK wasabi from Growing at Field 28. Desserts add a contemporary seasonal twist to classic dishes, with vanilla Crème Brulee being complemented by elderflower macerated strawberries, strawberry sorbet and lovage pollen.
Curated by head sommelier, Cino Noir, Chef’s Table o ers an extensive and unique wine selection. Focusing on Old World labels, the cellar includes varieties from over 20 countries including lesser-known wine growing regions from Georgia to Japan. Led by the team’s expert knowledge, guests are encouraged to explore the vast o ering and sample something less familiar.
GROWING AT FIELD 28
Partnered with local farm Growing at Field 28 in Daresbury, a symbiotic ongoing relationship has been fostered through their shared ethos of utilising high-quality locally grown produce. Starting as a supplier and evolving into business partners, the relationship has grown organically over time. Now the restaurant and farm collaborate on planting schedules and align menu changes with crop harvests. Specialising in pesticide and biocide-free produce, Growing at Field 28 provides highquality specialist leaf, microgreens, edible flowers and heritage vegetable varieties that are featured prominently on the restaurant’s menu. Along with Chef’s Table and twenty eight, the farm also supplies
to many of the UK’s top-rated restaurants including 3 Michelin-starred, The Ledbury.
SISTER RESTAURANTS
When relaunching at the new site, the concept of twenty eight was conceived. A joint venture with Growing at Field 28, twenty eight is the more casual sister restaurant to Chef’s Table. Sharing a joint entrance area, the team at twenty eight and Chef’s Table work closely together to o er two uniquely di erent dining experiences with the same farm-to-table ethos at their core Helmed by head chef Jay Tanner (previously of Chef’s Table), the menu comprises British-style tapas in the form of seasonal sharing plates. twenty eight provides a laid-back environment to enjoy inventive dishes, vegan wines and regular events. Since launching in late 2023, the restaurant has seen critical acclaim on both a regional and national scale with stellar reviews from food critics and various award wins including Reader’s Choice at the Condé Nast Traveller’s ‘Top New Restaurant Awards’. Working closely together the two restaurants utilise by-product of each other’s dishes to create new menu items, minimising excess food waste. Absolutely is in no doubt, whichever you choose this festive season, you will enjoy a Christmas dinner to remember.

Mushroom, Butternut Squash, Chestnut and
Caramelized Onion Wreath
Serves 6
Prep time: 25 minutes, plus chilling Cook time: 1 hour 15 minutes
INGREDIENTS
• 2 red onions, finely sliced
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• 1 knob of butter
• Pinch of Maldon Sea Salt
• 1 tsp soft brown sugar
• 450g mixed mushrooms (chestnut, shittake, oyster), torn into pieces
• ½ small butternut squash, peeled and diced into 2cm cubes
• 50g chestnuts, crumbled
• Small handful sage leaves, shredded
• A little grated nutmeg
• 30g dried cranberries
• Pinch of Maldon Garlic Sea Salt
• 1 x 320g sheet of pu pastry
• Milk or egg to glaze
METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 200c.
2 To a frying pan add 1 tbsp of olive olive plus a knob of butter and allow it to melt. When foaming, add the sliced onions and a pinch of Maldon Sea Salt. Fry these on a low heat for at least 10 minutes until they are soft and translucent. Then add the soft brown sugar and continue to cook for another 5 minutes until the onions have gone sticky, soft and caramelized. Set aside to cool.
3 Place all the mushrooms onto a baking tray along with the diced butternut squash. Then drizzle with the remaining olive oil and some salt and pepper. Place into the hot oven and roast for 25 minutes until the squash is tender and the mushrooms are golden. Set the tray aside to cool.
4 Once the vegetables have cooled you can make the filling. Simply mix in a bowl with the caramelized onions, chestnuts, sage, nutmeg, dried cranberries and Maldon Garlic Sea Salt.
5 Unroll the pastry onto a baking tray and then pile the filling down the middle in a line. Then roll the pastry over to seal it. Use the egg wash to seal it down, and then take the two open ends and join them together, sealing them as well. Egg wash the whole outside of the wreath and then place into the fridge for 30 mins.
6 Once the wreath has chilled, place it into the preheated oven and bake for 3540 minutes until it is golden and crisp on the outside. Cool slightly before serving – can be served warm or cold.
Christmas Spiced Orange Roast Duck
Serves: 6 people
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 2 hours 10 minutes
INGREDIENTS
• 1 x whole duck (roughly 2.2kg)
• Maldon Smoked Sea Salt
• 500g Maris piper potatoes
• 5 x banana shallots, peeled and halved
• 6 x clementines
• 2 x bay leaves
• 1 cinnamon stick
• 1 tbsp honey
• 50g Seville orange marmalade
METHOD
1 Heat the oven to 180C. Pat the skin of the duck dry and rub 1 tsp of the smoked salt into the skin. Place the bird breast side down in a roasting tin with the shallots and roast for 1 hour.
2 While this is roasting, peel and halve any large potatoes. Place them in a pan of water and boil them for 8 minutes, or until a knife can be inserted. Then tip the potatoes into a colander in the sink and allow them to steam. Shake the colander a little to flu up the potatoes and then set aside.
3 After 1 hour, drain o all the fat, reserving it to cook your potatoes in. Then carefully lift and turn the duck in the tray. Surround it with 3 clementines, halved, the cinnamon and bay and return to the oven for a further 1 hour (keep watching and basting).
4 Meanwhile, roast the potatoes in the duck fat adding a good pinch of Maldon Smoked Sea Salt.
5 Before the end of the cooking, add the juice of the 3 remaining clementines to a small pan and simmer until reduced by half, then add the honey and marmalade. Brush the duck with the sticky glaze and return to the oven for the final 10 minutes.
6 Serve the duck with the roast potatoes, braised red cabbage and sprouts.
Spiced Apple Frangipane Tart
Serves: 8 people
Prep time: 35 minutes, plus chilling time
Cook time: 1 hour
INGREDIENTS
For the pastry
• 160g plain flour
• 50g icing sugar
• 120g unsalted butter, cold and cubed
• 1 egg yolk
• 1 tbsp of cold water (more if needed)
For the frangipane
• 130g unsalted butter, room temp
• 150g caster sugar
• Pinch of Smoked Maldon Sea Salt
• 2 eggs, plus 1 egg yolk
• 2 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• ½ tsp ground nutmeg
• 150g ground almonds
• 45g plain flour
• 2 large apples, cored and thinly sliced with skin-on
• Icing sugar, to serve
METHOD
1 Start by making the pastry. In a food processor add the plain flour and icing sugar. Then add the cold, cubed butter and pulse until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Next add the egg yolk and cold water. Pulse again until the pastry starts to come together. If it looks a little dry, add a splash more water.
2 Bring the pastry together with your hands and tip out of the food processor. Knead very gently and then wrap in clingfilm in a flat disc shape and put into the fridge to chill for 30 mins.
3 After 30 mins, remove the pastry from the fridge and then roll it out on a lightly floured work surface. Roll a large circle around 2cm in thickness and then use your rolling
pin to lift the pastry and drape over a 23cm fluted tart tin. Gently press in the corners and up the sides, leaving some overhang at the top. Use a fork to lightly prick the base of the tart. Then place this back into the fridge for another 30 mins.
4 Preheat the oven to 180c.
5 After 30 minutes, remove the chilled pastry case from the fridge. Scrunch up some baking paper and then line the pastry with this and some baking beans. Place into the preheated oven to blind bake. Bake it for 15 minutes, then remove the beans and paper and return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes until the pastry feels chalky and lightly golden in colour. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly.
6 While the pastry is blind baking, make the frangipane. Using an electric hand whisk, place the softened butter, sugar and pinch of Maldon Smoked
Sea Salt in a large bowl and whisk together for 2-3 minutes until pale and flu y. Then add the eggs, yolks, and vanilla and whisk again. Finally add the cinnamon, nutmeg, ground almonds and flour, and whisk until combined.
7 When the pastry case has cooled slightly, take a small, serrated knife and carefully trim o the excess pastry so you have a nice smooth line around the top. Dust o any pastry remains.
8 Spoon the frangipane filling into the pastry case and smooth out with a palette knife. Then arrange the apple slices on the top and lightly press into the filling.
9 Place the tart back into the oven for around 40-45 minutes until the apples are golden and the frangipane is pu ed up and golden brown too.
10 Remove from the oven and allow to cool before dusting with icing sugar and serving.

BAG a bargain
Are designer handbags a good investment? Christine Colbert, founder of Dress Cheshire, points you in the right direction
From Michael Kors to Hermès, a beautiful designer handbag is a perennially popular accessory. But, are there handbags where one can actually make a profit? Well, there’s one brand for sure that will make you money: Hermès.
The Hermès Birkin and Kelly bag, in any form, is so popular, and so rare, that they hike in price the moment they leave the boutique. Hermès have an extremely clever marketing plan, driven by their obsession with quality and absolute dedication to perfection in every bag made. They only produce a very limited number of each of their bags each year, which means supply is considerably less than demand. If you’re lucky enough to be o ered a bag by Hermès (and even more lucky to be able to a ord one), you don’t say no, even if it’s not the colour you were hoping for. In this way, Hermès keeps demand at a high and exclusivity a driving factor in the
desire to own one. This, naturally, results in a thriving pre-loved market for Hermès bags, with hopeful shoppers unable to get on ‘the list’ at their local Hermès retailer, buying via boutiques such as Dress Cheshire. We have a wait-list for Hermès bags, and a steady supply of ladies ready to sell, too.
Other brands where you might actually make a return on your investment are those who discontinue a line, or launch a limited edition style, making those bags now impossible to buy new. Gucci, Prada, Bottega Veneta – all you need is a super-starlet to be seen with one on arm and demand will follow.
While you might not see a profit on your designer handbag purchase in most cases, there are some brands that retain a greater resale value as a percentage of their original purchase price. You can’t go wrong with a classic Chanel 2.55 Classic Mini Flap Bag, designed by the icon herself in 1955 and the epitome of an accessory that has stood the test of time.
As with any designer pieces you are considering re-selling, quality is key to the value that will be placed on it. Pre-loved bags might be expected to be a little worn, but staining on the inside, scratches on the exterior, missing pieces etc, do not a good price make. If you’ve kept the soft bag and the original packaging, that’s great and will really help set the best price for you.
If you have a bag to sell, or have a craving to own something special, get in touch for some expert advice – you never know, Dress Cheshire could be about to make your dreams come true! There is one designer handbag you might be able to get your hands on for the price of a round of drinks, and that’s a beautiful pink Chanel Mini Flap Bag worth over £5,400 that Dress Cheshire is ra ing o in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society. Head over to dresscheshire.com to grab your ticket before they sell out.

and peace created by the surroundings. The dramatic, distinct landscape is dominated by the impressive Pendle Hill. Entering Woodland Spa, you can see it has been £16 million well spent. I don’t have enough space to cover every little facet of the magnificent improvements, so here are my particular favourite touches: Hydrotherapy Pool: feel the stress melt away as powerful massage jets work the whole body to eliminate muscular tension and improve circulation; Serenity Pool: escape into this warm low-lit relaxation room with a high-temperature pool and let your stress float away;
Outdoor Infinity Edge Spa Jacuzzis: two huge 16-seater Jacuzzis ensure there’s plenty of room to fully destress, relax and take in the great British outdoor air; Salt Steam: salt and steam combine to create a sea atmosphere, helping you breathe more easily, relax and clear the mind; Ice Lounge: after enjoying a heated treatment, you’ll love cooling down in the UK’s very first KLAFS Ice Lounge, which is the coolest place to be right now!
There are plenty more attractions. The dramatic Vitality Pool boasts no less than four spacious hot tubs, two of which are elevated with an infinity edge, and here you’ll find water canons, massage stations and a gentle waterfall rain shower. Their fabulous mezzanine is the epitome of luxury relaxation; it features a variety of bespoke relaxation areas with sensory lighting. It’s the perfect place to lie back and have that muchneeded catch-up conversation. Then there’s the luxury beauty treatments delivered in the most luxurious of surroundings. There are three dining options available to you during your spa stay, these include the option of a two- course meal in the Spa Restaurant, tapas in the Terrace Bar, or pizza in the Rooftop Bar, all of which you can enjoy whilst wearing your spa robe (the ultimate in luxury).
As you make your way down their winding lane, you will find yourself unwinding. At the end of your visit, you’ll find yourself wondering how soon you can return...

Heart of the home
How this wonderful kitchen project truly was made with family in mind by Kenton Jones
Established in 1977 and drawing on skills passed down through three generations, Kenton Jones prides themselves on handcrafting timeless and sustainable kitchens of outstanding quality and beauty. Honing his craft from a young age, Kenton was born with an innate passion for woodwork. Combined with an architectural background, he has always strived to give every client something truly unique to them.
Kenton has since passed down his skills and knowledge to his son, also named Kenton, who is now in turn passing these on to the next generation. Their creations embody the artistry and values that run through their family as they uphold the legacy of quality craftsmanship and service that permeates every Kenton Jones kitchen – such as this unqiue project here.
PROJECT INTRODUCTION
When existing customers Richard and Charlotte decided to build their new home,
they returned to Kenton Jones to commission their dream kitchen. Although the house was a new build, they set out to achieve a timeless classic feel in a modern country house. Charlotte had a unique vision of how she wanted the space to look and feel. With their large family it had to become the hub of the home, an inspirational place to bake and entertain. During the build stages of the property, Richard wanted a unique table to be the primary focus when entering the dining room. With a passion for sustainably sourcing aged furniture to fit into the period
“Every little detail they had worked on had come to life”
styled property, he began searching for tables locally that might fit the brief. It was then he discovered a 3m dark stained Quarter Sawn Oak Kenton Jones table, which was commissioned by a local family as one of the first pieces made by Kenton Senior in the early 80s.
With the final handshake on the kitchen, a deal was done with Kenton that he would work on the main scullery table with his team so that there would be two tables from both generations.
DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE
During the early stages of the project Richard and Charlotte worked closely with the Kenton Jones design team to get every detail correct. The minimalist, classic design that was being sought after is how all estate country kitchens were once built. This meant each section of the kitchen had to be meticulously planned and scaled around what it was being used for. The size of the plate racks in the drying area above the large Belfast sink were sized from the plates in the couple’s collection. The drawers and dividers in the scullery table were sized for the backing utensils needed in this area. These design points
are what made this kitchen so unique and personal to Richard and Charlotte.
Charlotte, a keen baker, had the granite end of the scullery table added to keep the pastry cool while working with it, even the detailed junction between stone and Oak was modeled various ways before being signed off.
With manufacture well underway with the cabinet makers and hand finishers in the workshop, Kenton set out to source the boards needed for the main scullery table. These boards were going to be the focal point of the whole kitchen. Not only were they going to be the main thing that everyone who sits and eats in the room is going to be sat around to admire, but to Richard and Charlotte this piece of furniture was one that had to be synonymous with their grand dining table Kenton Senior had made many years ago. The original table was locally sourced quarter sawn oak boards from the family’s mill, therefore for Kenton it only felt right to get the same timber for the new table.
He had a good local source of mature aged, quarter sawn English and Welsh Oak trees from local estates that, due to the three year seasoning process of the sawn timber, is not the easiest to source for projects, as you can’t go with a cutting list to get exactly what you want (the way most modern joinery timber is sought after). With this product you have to see what is available from a width, length and section size and work these pieces into your design. This was the age-old organic way timber used to be selected for furniture that unfortunately now, due to mass production and lead time, is generally forgotten.
During the processes of the boards going through the workshop, Kenton requested the help of his three sons, who are learning the family ways passed down from their father and grandfather before. This was a lovely surprise for Richard and Charlotte, who originally wanted furniture from two generations of the business, but in fact got three.
FINAL DELIVERY
After the installation was complete, Richard and Charlotte moved into their new family home. Every little detail they had worked so hard with the design team had finally come to life.
With an incredibly stylish classic kitchen, designed for modern function and family living, Kenton Jones had delivered exactly what was promised with a space to be proud of.

Cooking AWAY
The kitchen truly is the heart of the home at Christmas – but what trends can we expect to see in 2025? One expert shows the way
From rustic farmhouses to contemporary abodes, bespoke kitchen specialists, The Main Company, design some of the most unique kitchens for their customers. As we head into 2025, Alex Main, director of The Main Company, shares his insights into upcoming trends, including the everlasting popularity of green, a more refined approach to wood and a touch of fluting.
“Wood is being embraced in the home and in the kitchen more than ever before.
From cabinet fronts to accent details, homeowners are steering towards a lighter, more refined look with wood,” Alex says. “Part of the desire to create a more natural looking space, we have found that this elegant, more refined approach to incorporating wood is following through into other areas of the home.
“Green is still one of the most popular colour choices for kitchens,” Alex adds. “With a slight tendency towards darker, moodier palettes, this shade is likely to remain prevalent throughout next year as well. Whilst the darker tones are the most
popular, we have noticed a lean towards more uncommon shades recently – from bolder olive tones to more jewel-based teals and emeralds.”
Reena Simon, designer and content creator, designed an exclusive kitchen collection with The Main Company this year. “There’s a noticeable trend towards what I have seen described as ‘quiet luxury’ in kitchen design,” she says. “This trend also aligns with the broader movement towards sensorial design, where the focus is on creating environments that engage the senses in a calming and subtle way. People are seeking kitchens that offer a serene, almost spa-like atmosphere, achieved through a blend of textures, soft palettes, and minimalistic details. Additionally, there’s a growing desire for personalisation and uniqueness in design. Rather than opting for cookie-
cutter solutions, homeowners are embracing bespoke elements that reflect their individual tastes and lifestyles.
“From glass doors to cabinetry fronts, fluting has become tremendously popular,” Reena continues. “Perfect when paired with a more refined approach to light wood, different fluted or grooved details add a sought-after, unique touch to kitchens, creating a more lived-in and individual feel.
“The desire to create and make unique design statements has remained an important factor in kitchen design this year, in particular when it comes to different patterns and materials. Homeowners are looking to add personality and individuality through a number of new and exciting ways, such as hessian-effect materials on cabinet fronts, opting for wallpaper in-fill panels or even having hand painted specialist kitchen panels. We expect to see an increase in these more personal touches next year, allowing homeowners to really put their stamp on their kitchens.”

Decades in design
Cheshire’s Rachel Moore reflects on 20 years since launching her interior design business, stand out projects along the way and creating a signature look
Q Happy 20th anniversary! Have you looked to mark this special occasion in any way?
A Honestly, no, I hadn’t even thought about it! I think as with many small businesses it started gradually and has slowly grown. I’m so much in the moment of running a busy studio that I hadn’t stopped to think about it being a special year. However, now you mention it I think it’s a great idea and we should have a double celebration this Christmas.
Q Going back to 2004, when you launched the business, what inspired you to actually do it?
A I think I always felt as though I would like to run my own business. At university I remember being asked who would like to run their own business and there were only two of us who put up our hands, which really surprised me. It’s always been something I wanted to do. I loved the potential running your own business gives you. It is extremely hard work, but it also gives you so many possibilities if you want them. In the first
instance it was something that evolved. I’d already gone part-time to help set up a family business and one of our clients asked me to do some work for them and it really happened from there.
Q From day one, how did you want to be different?
A I didn’t start with a USP in mind, it also wasn’t that easy to compare yourself to other design practices at that time as there was no social media or even as many practices around. However I think we have evolved to having a USP over the years. We are pro-active in developing our experience and processes and always trying to improve how we serve our clients. The team has a great variety of skills that allows us to truly tailor projects to each client: it’s not just the designs that we tailor, it’s also the approach. Some clients need comprehensive assistance with build projects, where we are working with them from the offset on all aspects of the build. Others want a quick turnaround and just pointing in the right direction, there is also everything in
“We are always trying to improve how we serve our clients”
between and we are able to tailor our work to suit each client.
Q Do you remember your first big project? How do you look back on it?
A Yes, I was asked to design several rooms for some entrepreneurial clients who are now an extremely successful and well known couple in Cheshire. They had an interior designer before, but I knew I had access to design houses with products, fabrics and finishes that were not available on the high street and I could create something really unique for them. It made me understand how by starting the process early and being able to plan rooms, lighting, architectural
details make so much difference to a space. Having a large budget to design without compromise was a wonderful opportunity.
Q Have you evolved in any way in 20 years?
A Yes absolutely, we’ve evolved in every way. There are now eight of us on the team, we have some designers with architectural backgrounds, which although we don’t do architecture it gives us a greater knowledge base to offer clients. Also one really big aspect of interior design is project management, and over the years we have really developed how we manage this for clients and in the studio. Unlike any other trade on site, we are often involved in every aspect of the build or renovation. We can work in the pre build stage on first fix plans for contractors and architects, we will spec everything from ceiling details, architectural details, switch plates, handles and bathroom finishes and flooring right the way through to bedlinen, artwork and accessories. People often don’t realise just how much the interior designer does. It’s a really encompassing role that can require us to work with every trade on site. Over the years we have really worked hard to hone our processes. We will continually develop our approach to help us guide and deliver to the client.
Q Can you pick out 2-3 Cheshire projects that were especially important to you and why?
A My first big project, as I mentioned already, was the first that truly allowed me to design without any budget
contrasts. The second was my first commercial job in Manchester. I was commissioned to design an office space for a commercial travel business. I loved building the brand and business ethos into the design of the space. We split the space to create offices, boardrooms, a reception and meeting rooms and created a really desirable and unique space, which include features like all the airport codes applied in gloss on the walls of the boardroom, these were only visible when light shone on them creating a great effect. I believe part of what makes our approach to our design different is finding creative ways of including a nod to the business or client into the environment without being too obvious. My third would be a project we are still working on with a lovely family. Many years ago we helped them with the full scale renovation of their large Victorian villa in Bowden. We are now back updating some rooms and re-designing others. Working with a client over many years is great, you really get to know them and have a real understanding of how they like to work. A lot of trust is also built up and that’s a great feeling to know your clients trust you to make decisions and deliver great outcomes for them.
Q How do you like to work with a client?
A We work differently with every client as everyone ultimately needs a slightly different approach. We are set up so that we can create designs for a client and then progress to more detailed build information and schedules should the project require it. We can be at site meetings and working with all the contactors on site throughout the whole project if needed. Other clients with smaller projects may just require our initial design service and then wish to manage the build part of the project themselves. We would then always be on hand to help and advise and of course we are always on site at the very important dressing and styling service at the end.
“Clients come to us for timeless looks, with carefully chosen colour and pattern”
Q What inspires your designs?
A Art, fashion and other great interior design. We are always inspired by great hotels, restaurants, and exhibitions. I went to see the Chanel exhibition and that inspired many ideas for a commercial project we were working on at the time. Also the latest designs in fabrics, furniture, lighting etc will inspire us. The people we are designing for also of course have a huge influence on our design. We start all our projects with an in-depth chat about how they live, how they want to use the space, how they want it to make them feel and what impression they want their space to give. We will also discuss what they are inspired by and what styles they love.
Q Do you think there is a typical Rachel Moore style?
A Years ago I used to say we didn’t have one, however now I believe we do. We obviously tailor our designs to our clients and also the property style and location. However, clients come to us for timeless, tailored looks, neutral and calm palettes with carefully chosen colour and pattern. We use a tasteful balance of luxurious finishes with clean lines and sumptuous textures. All finishes and adornments are simple yet impactful, luxurious and extremely well-considered.
Q What has been great about being based in Cheshire?
A I think we are incredibly lucky to be based in Cheshire.
Outside of London I believe it’s one of the best counties to work in. There is a definite appreciation for design in Cheshire, combined with it being an affluent county, people love their interiors in Cheshire and can afford to invest in them.
We have such a wonderful mix of property in Cheshire also. From beautiful towns and villages, properties with more of an urban feel to country farmhouses and barns. I love the variety of property and clients.
Q Will you have much time off over Christmas?
A Hopefully we will close the studio for two weeks as we often need the break! The run up to Christmas is a very busy time in interior design, we have been on site on Christmas Eve before styling homes and finishing bedrooms ready for guests. It can be quite pressured as everyone is in the same boat organising suppliers, trades, fitters, we are already well underway with planning it all for December.
Q What does 2025 hold in store for you?
A We already have some lovely projects lined up at the start of January including two London projects. We also have two big build projects due to complete next year, which is when we start to see all our hard work becoming a reality. We will be looking for someone to help with our social media and marketing which is exciting. However, the most exciting of all will be our wedding. Darroch and I are due to be married in June, we have lots of family and friends joining us to help us celebrate including Darroch’s family and friends travelling over from Australia, which will make it extra special. The whole team from RMD will be there and we are already planning the tablescapes, probably more than the dress!

Timeless twist
Charlotte Findlater takes us behind the scenes of this project in the Lake District, a modern take on the Arts & Crafts movement
“We aimed to design elements rooted in nature”
In October 2023, Charlotte Findlater
Design was commissioned to lead the architecture, interior design, and complete renovation of a home in the picturesque English Lake District. The house, in need of significant refurbishment, required a comprehensive approach. Our team developed internal layouts and plans that included a new kitchen and hallway extension, a balcony off the master bedroom, a full re-roofing, and the replacement of all windows and doors. We also remodelled the internal spaces, staying true to our design ethos of blending regenerative design principles, craftsmanship, and biophilic design principles to create enduring, meaningful spaces.
Arts & Crafts inspiration
Drawing inspiration from Blackwell, the iconic Arts & Crafts house nearby, we aimed to infuse the lounge with timeless design elements rooted in nature and bespoke design. Blackwell’s original decorative features, including intricate wood panelling and natureinspired metalwork, served as our starting point. We incorporated these influences into the room while balancing them with a modern, contemporary twist that brings
comfort, functionality, and aesthetics to the forefront for 21st century living.
The Arts & Crafts movement emphasizes handmade, quality furniture and furnishings. This design ethos perfectly aligns with our dedication to resilience and timeless design, ensuring each piece in the lounge is not only beautiful but also built to last.
A calm, nature-inspired aesthetic
Surrounded by serene gardens, the home’s natural setting inspired our choice of soft, earthy tones and natural materials. We incorporated wood panelling, bespoke furniture, and floor coverings that reflect the calming influence of the surrounding landscape. The room is designed to offer visual richness and a peaceful atmosphere, ensuring it serves as a tranquil sanctuary for relaxation.
A contemporary take on Arts & Crafts design
Custom furnishings and sustainable materials
All architectural joinery was designed and crafted in-house using environmentally conscious materials. Echoing the Arts & Crafts belief in quality craftsmanship, our focus was on creating bespoke, locally sourced pieces that stand the test of time. By infusing natural textures, fabrics, and a muted colour palette inspired by nature, we enhanced the lounge’s connection to the outdoors while maintaining a warm, inviting atmosphere.
A timeless yet modern lounge
Ultimately, the lounge combines the best of both worlds – an homage to the Arts & Crafts movement’s love of craftsmanship and nature, with modern updates that cater to contemporary needs. At Charlotte Findlater Design, we believe in creating spaces that are both beautiful and functional, ensuring that every design detail reflects our core values of regenerative design, timeless design, and biophilic design principles.
While rooted in traditional Arts & Crafts principles, we ensured the lounge was updated for modern living. Furniture pieces were carefully selected for their simplicity, durability, and craftsmanship, featuring rich natural woods and subtle curves. We also included contemporary elements such as ergonomic seating and lighting that highlights the room’s architectural details without overwhelming the space. charlottefindlater.co.uk
Incorporating these elements into the lounge design, we’ve crafted a space that not only honours the past, but is also perfectly suited for modern living – an enduring, peaceful retreat.
PAINTING A PICTURE
ABSOLUTELY HEADS TO THE EXPERTS AT CLARENDON FINE ART CHESTER AND LIVERPOOL TO UNCOVER WHAT TO EXPECT TO GRACE OUR WALLS THIS CHRISTMAS AND INTO 2025
Clarendon Fine Art believes that buying art should be an inspiring and accessible experience for everyone – whether a seasoned collector or a first-time buyer. Clarendon has more than 90 galleries across the UK, showcasing a range of works from household names to emerging talents, and offers a truly welcoming and personalised experience. Its team of experts offer a free consultation service and customers can also view their preferred artwork in the comfort of their own home before making a final decision.
Here, Sarah Hill, Chief Creative Officer at Clarendon Fine Art, writes about the current and upcoming interior and art trends perfect for your home.
GENDER GAINS
One of the most significant trends in 2024 has been the rise of women artists. At Clarendon we’ve seen a growing interest in a diverse range of female voices, from the vibrant sunsets of Anna Gammans to the organic narratives of Danielle O’Connor Akiyama, the grand-scale abstract minimalism of Tabitha Millet, or the bold and bright symbolism of Charmaine Chanakira. Despite ranging across a broad spectrum of styles and colours,
these artists share a transformative quality; they paint with their heart and soul, and their work can change the whole ambience of a room with its presence. This trend is reflected on the secondary market where according to Hiscox the number of lots sold by female artists increased by 21% from 2023 to 2024.
THE NEXT GENERATION
The market is increasingly turning its attention to younger artists, with 39% of the art sold by Clarendon last year coming from creators under the age of 45. Emerging talents including Jack Davis and Tim Fowler are leading the way, as their works align perfectly with both current design trends and hot topics in media and society. Fowler’s ambitious use of luminous swathes of colour to revisit the world of botanical art and Davis’s mesmerising explorations of the light and textures of sea and sky embrace the influence of nature and
the importance of environmental issues to all of us in a whole new array of styles. That said, there has also been a resurgence of interest in specific established stars of our portfolio such as David Hockney, whose recent exhibitions at Lightroom and the National Gallery have kept him at the forefront of collectors' minds, alongside those other 20th century masters whose work transcends fashions.
FESTIVE FASHIONS
This Christmas, we’re seeing a distinct move towards typography-based artwork. With their bright, saturated colours and witty, wise or uplifting messages, bold, text-driven pieces are already coming to the forefront. The integration of striking phrases and modern typography offers a fresh, graphic appeal, and as Christmas approaches, these pieces also come into their own as perfectly pitched and relevant gifts for anyone who loves art and appreciates something a bit different. The Connor Brothers have built a huge global following with their stylish vintage literary style images which offer the perfect phrase for every occasion or individual, while Pop Art legend Mr Brainwash peppers his explosive artworks with his uplifting, signature graffiti-style messages. The Real Hackney Dave is one to watch for next year, as his eye-catching work has plenty to say in a bold font, most often his signature shade of pink, which is set to be one of next year’s key colours. No trend is ever absolute as we know, and the brilliant Dave White’s stunning new golden robin has come out of leftfield to remind us that wildlife art is always a good idea, and that any style or
genre can strike a chord with collectors if the stars of time, place and talent align.
COLOUR BE GOOD
Our team of interiors-focused staff have been keeping a close eye on the trends and commissioned a wide range of bold and brights including yellows and pinks for the coming year. These are colours which bring great warmth and vibrancy to a contemporary space and artists including Jonjo, Simon Kenny, Michael F. Rumsby and, as mentioned earlier, The Real Hackney Dave who were already embracing these hues in their works are becoming increasingly popular. We have also recently signed British artist Emma Gibbons, ‘the sparkling queen of Pop Art’, whose use of these colours in her innovative and fun-loving mixed media artworks brings a lively, energetic atmosphere to any interior.
DOWN TO EARTH
In sharp contrast to these bold and brights, abstract minimalism looks set to play a dominant role in interior design and in the art world we are already seeing a focus
on earthy tones that complement modern interiors. Artists such as Tabatha Millet, Natasha Barnes, and Beatrice Elorza are producing calming, minimalist works that reflect a clean, natural aesthetic. These pieces evoke a sense of tranquillity and order, making them highly sought after by collectors who are drawn to the clarity and serenity of these modern designs.
LOOK TO THE PAST
The vintage and nostalgia angle has been very strong in our collection this year and we only expect it to grow, but the artists who are enjoying success with this are those who offer a spin, an angle or a twist that brings the work into the modern world while retaining its charm. We’re particularly excited about The Real
Hackney Dave, whose work taps into the vintage and nostalgia trend that’s becoming increasingly popular. His pieces blend retro aesthetics, often based on vintage maps and other ephemera with a modern edge, appealing to collectors who appreciate the familiarity of nostalgic design but with a contemporary twist. The Connor Brothers are the masters of this approach, bringing a contemporary vocabulary into the world of classic book design going back to the 1940s, while an artist such as Sherree ValentineDaines taps into our nostalgic side with her timeless scenes of innocent childhood days and visions of an idyllic lifestyle which recalls our favourite days.

Catching THE EYE
ABSOLUTELY TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT THE PROJECT FROM CHESTER’S JOJO BRADLEY INTERIORS THAT IMPRESSED THE JUDGES AT THE BIID INTERIOR DESIGN AWARDS
The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) recently announced the winners of the 2024 BIID Interior Design Awards. The ceremony took place on Thursday 17th October at the spectacular Drapers’ Hall in London for the third consecutive year and was presented by architectural and social historian, Dr Lucy Worsley, in front of an audience of over 200 design industry professionals.
Seven regional category prizes were awarded, as well as Interior of the Year for the best interior design project in the UK and the Anna Whitehead Prize, awarded for the best achievement in sustainable interior design.
BIID President Angela Bardino commented: “The expansive range and exceptional quality of this year’s projects was outstanding. The awards strive to provide opportunity and exposure to residential and commercial design projects across the country – of any size, any budget. This year’s eclectic mix of superb quality work is a true celebration of the best of British
interior design. Congratulations to all the winners for entering your remarkable projects that inspire and excite our community.”
In the North & North West section, Cheshire-based Jojo Bradley Interiors were Highly Commended for their project, Georgian Villa. The Georgian Villa design process focused on redefining three reception rooms into distinct functional spaces: a dining area, an entertainment/TV space, and a children’s area for TV and studying, reflecting the clients’ dayto-day needs. The project considered traditional and modern elements of the home, utilising durable, sustainable materials, and vibrant designs. A beautiful family home, set in the most quintessentially English gardens, this project was a celebration of colour and texture, a playful mix of fabric and pattern, a joy to design with no detail left unturned.
The judges felt ‘the design successfully brings a sense of vibrancy to the home, using bold patterns and textures to create a beautiful, curated environment that feels both timeless and full of life’.
Based near Chester, Jojo Bradley set up her business nine years ago. She keeps the business cogs turning in the background, alongside working with her designers on larger scale renovation projects (often the voice behind their social media). Hers is a talented team of interior designers, who are here to provide a highly personal service. They ensure attention to detail and professional management at all stages of the design process, for their clients throughout Cheshire and beyond – and the pictures here of the Georgian Villa truly show what they can achieve.

Perfect ESCAPE
The bathroom has transformed into our sanctuary in the home. Here’s what you can expect to see in them in 2025
The bathroom, once seen as a purely functional space, is rapidly evolving into a sanctuary of relaxation, wellness and luxury. A new wave of bathroom trends are emerging as 2025 begins, redefining how this essential room is best used. From wellness-centric spaces to oversized shower enclosures, Jeevan Seth, CEO at JTP who have outlets across the UK, here writes about the bathroom trends which are set to dominate over the coming year…
Bathrooms are no longer functional spaces, they’ve turned into rooms which must combine wellness, relaxation and self-care. Features like steam showers, rainfall shower heads, heated towel rails and freestanding bathtubs are more
frequently being introduced in order to create wellness-centric areas.
A shift towards darker, moodier bathroom designs is a reflection of the wider trend for more luxurious, spa-like spaces in the home. Exuding a sense of sophistication, deep shades like charcoal, navy and forest green will create a rich, opulent feel, capable of transforming a bathroom into a high-end retreat. Dark colours also add a depth to the space which allows for highcontrast design elements, such as brushed brass and chrome fixtures, or opt for matt black for a cohesive, contemporary look. Bold hardware designs are gaining popularity with homeowners who are looking to combine both functionality and aesthetics in a quick and easy way. Brushed brass, bronze and matt black are popular choices for adding visual interest to the bathroom, giving spaces

a more refined and high-end finish. As minimalist bathroom designs continue to be a favourite amongst homeowners, statement hardware will add a touch of colour without overwhelming the scheme.
Another trend which has been heavily inspired by high-end hotels and spas, oversized shower enclosures provide homeowners with a spa-like experience from the comfort of their own home. With a sophisticated style similar to a wetroom, they offer a touch of luxury, but without the need to waterproof the entire bathroom. Whilst better suited to larger bathrooms, they are designed to make efficient use of any available space, with the open layout creating a light and airy feel.
From sleek and minimalist to more traditional and vintage-inspired designs, statement bathroom radiators are having a moment in the spotlight. Combining practicality with high-end design, they offer homeowners a stylish way to add a focal point that exudes warmth and personality. They will blend seamlessly with other bathroom fixtures due to the array of finishes on offer, from brushed brass to matt black. They’re also simple to install, whilst being a fairly affordable way to update a bathroom when the budget is tight.

Mountain HIGH
VALSANA, AROSA
Dreamy snow-filled landscapes, warming fondue, apres-ski magnums of rose: all of this and more can be found in Switzerland's lovely Arosa. We visit for some sustainable ski activities.
SNOW PLOUGH
Cross-country skiing has a lower environmental impact than downhill and is just as much fun. Absolutely has a go at Arosa’s Valsana Hotel
By PENDLE HARTE
It is literally an uphill struggle. I am attempting to pull myself up with my ski poles while also trying to stop my feet in their skinny skis from sliding backwards and downhill. Cross-country skiing is said to engage the entire body, and all my muscles are certainly working hard. Because while you might imagine cross country to be essentially flat, it still involves a bit of gentle up and down. And uphill skiing is no joke.
We have come to the snowy village of Arosa in Switzerland’s largest ski region to stay in a carbon neutral hotel and enjoy winter sports that have a lower environmental impact than the conventional skiing and snowboarding. These are essentially activities that shun the ski lifts, which are inherently wasteful, running on average at 80% empty. It’s a surprising statistic for anyone who has spent an age queuing to get back up a mountain, but the team at Valsana Hotel and Apartments take this very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that this is Switzerland’s only hotel to be powered entirely by an elaborate circular heat pump system that utilises an ice battery and recovers heat from a nearby supermarket. This heat recovery system is radical and innovative, and the hotel is proud of a carbon neutrality that doesn’t simply involve planting
compensatory trees, but actually pioneers a real sustainability. Not only are there no plastic straws here, but all furniture is made from renewable materials, all paper is recycled and unbleached, kitchen waste contributes to fuel, Nespresso capsules are recycled, ingredients are local and there’s a focus on plant-based meals.
Which is definitely not to say that it’s not fun. The hotel feels contemporary and stylish – rooms come complete with turntables and small vinyl collections as well as cosy seating, balconies and comfortable beds. On site there’s an art gallery and a fantastic spa as well as a well-equipped ski shop. While skiing remains the main attraction –Arosa’s lifts are just a few minutes away – Valsana o ers a large programme of Curated Adventures that don’t involve going to the top of the mountain. Our cross-country lesson with lovely instructor Harry is one of them. We are kitted out at the shop and taken by road (public transport in the form of electric buses, brilliantly, is free in Arosa, encouraging people to abandon their cars in the interests of safety as well as sustainability) to a nearby golf course, transformed by the dreamiest of snowfalls into an impossibly perfect winter landscape. Cross-country skis are longer and slimmer than regular skis, and tracks are marked in the snow already. And this is where we practice sliding backwards and forwards, firstly with no incline to help or hinder us. It’s a sort of inelegant shu e until you get the hang of it, when it becomes more of a glide. In the distance we see people skiing cross-country at speed; this is not us. But after a couple of hours we have improved significantly and despite a
“Cross-country skiing is said to engage the entire body, and all my muscles are certainly working hard”
few falls on the downhill slides, we’re all feeling elated and confident, if exhausted. Because, be warned: cross-country skiing is a sport that you’ll be feeling in your hips for several days.
The next day we’re donning snowboots and heading for a guided snowshoe hike. Snowshoes have come a long way since they resembled tennis racquets that were strapped to your shoes: these are scary-looking metal-jawed attachments that help you to stomp uphill through fresh snow. Arosa is known for its sunshine, so we are trekking in sunglasses through a dreamy landscape of blue skies and pristine white snow. Our guide has given us rucksacks to carry and these contain a picnic fondue, complete with boiled potatoes. Warming cups of herbal tea and melted cheese are a welcome reward after a long trek.
Valsana Hotel is part of the Tschuggen Hotel Group, whose other property in Arosa is the uber luxe Tschuggen Grand, known for its iconic private mountain railway. Whether you’re a skier or not, there’s lots to do in Arosa.

Why all girls’ schools still outshine co-ed education for young women
Research has consistently suggested that girls perform better academically in single sex schools. However, the case for co-educational schooling has become ever more compelling in recent years. Girls’ schools have shifted their emphasis to focus not only on fostering academic excellence, but also providing an environment where young women can develop leadership skills, self-confidence, and a strong sense of identity without the social pressures that often accompany co-educational settings. Read on to find out more.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
According to research, girls at singlesex schools consistently perform better academically than girls with similar backgrounds at co-educational schools. They also out-perform boys at all-boys schools.
This significant benefit can be attributed to tailored teaching methods that cater specifically to girls’ learning styles. Educators at all-girls’ schools are more attuned to the unique ways in which girls learn and can adjust their methods accordingly.
Plus, subjects traditionally dominated by boys, such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), are given special emphasis, encouraging more girls to pursue these areas.
Proudly all girls’, The Queen’s School in Chester repeatedly ranks highly in all national academic league tables. Many pupils go onto Russell Group universities, and it’s one of the leading schools regionally for academic performance.
LEADERSHIP AND CONFIDENCE
In all girls’ schools, every leadership role – from head girl to sports captain – is filled by a girl. In co-ed schools, boys often dominate these positions. Helping young women to develop leadership skills and a strong sense of selfconfidence, single-sex schools encourage girls to speak up, take initiative, and lead. These are crucial skills for future careers.
“OUR PUPILS ARE ENCOURAGED TO AUTHENTICALLY EXPRESS THEMSELVES, KNOWING THEIR VOICES WILL BE HEARD”
Without boys, the social pressures and stereotypes that can inhibit girls from stepping into leadership roles are eliminated. This helps young women to emerge as confident, assertive, and capable leaders.
Headmistress at The Queen’s School, Joanne Keville, says: “At Queen’s, our pupils are encouraged to authentically express themselves, knowing their voices will be heard and valued. Whether it be as part of the Head Girls’ Team or Head of House, or indeed as chair in one of the School Parliament Committees – our girls are given every opportunity to develop and grow. In the classroom, the focus shifts from competition to collaboration, fostering sisterhood and solidarity among pupils. Girls feel empowered to take academic risks, ask questions, and challenge themselves, supported and celebrated for their achievements. As a result, they excel academically, as well as in their personal development.”
A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT
All girls’ schools tend to focus on creating a supportive social environment. The teenage years can be tough for girls, and navigating the social dynamics of a mixed gender setting can add extra stress. Less distracting than co-ed schools, girls in single-sex education can focus on their academic studies and personal development without conforming to gender stereotypes. This supportive atmosphere encourages girls to explore their interests freely and
express themselves fully, contributing to their overall well-being and mental health.
At The Queen’s School, girls are surrounded by female role models – from peers to teachers. The school’s curriculum, enrichment clubs and extended learning opportunities are all designed with girls in mind, in order to inspire and engage.
Headmistress Joanne Keville continues: “Surrounded by supportive peers and mentors, girls at Queen’s flourish into self-assured young women, fearlessly pursuing their passions and dreams. For me, what’s amazing is the fact that, when in this environment, girls don’t have self-limiting beliefs and refreshingly don’t realise that there is a glass ceiling.”
BREAKING DOWN STEREOTYPES
All girls’ schools are able to break down gender stereotypes by providing an environment where girls can excel without comparison to boys. Dismantling the traditional notions of ‘boys’ subjects’ and ‘girls’ subjects’, all girls’ schools are able to encourage pupils to pursue careers such as engineering or computer science, without the pressure of gender biases.
At The Queen’s School, more than 50% of girls take a science at A-level. They are seeing an increasing number of girls going on to study typically male-dominated subjects at university, such as computer science, physics, astronomy, maths and engineering.
This early exposure to a broad range of opportunities helps to level the playing field and paves the way for greater gender equality in the workforce.
Headmistress Joanne Keville says: “By the very nature of our school, all leadership roles and positions of responsibility are occupied by girls at Queen’s. I recognise that true equality has yet to be achieved across society, and therefore, it is crucial to empower the young women and girls of today through high-quality education that enables them to create a more equitable world for future generations.”
BUILDING LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS
Pupils at all girls’ schools often build lifelong friendships, built on mutual support and shared experiences. These strong bonds can extend beyond the school years, helping girls to build a network of support and connection throughout their lives. Friendships formed at all girls’ schools can be particularly empowering, as they are based on genuine understanding and shared aspirations.
FINAL THOUGHTS
While co-educational schools undoubtedly o er their own benefits, the advantages of all girls’ schools are compelling. From proven academic achievement, to fostering leadership skills, and a supportive and stereotype-free environment, single-sex education provides a strong foundation for young women to build successful and fulfilling lives. As we strive for greater gender equality and empowerment, all girls’ schools continue to play an essential role in nurturing the potential of the next generation of women.

Additionally, Stonyhurst o ers more than 75 co-curricular activities for all pupils, ranging from sports and outdoor pursuits to music, drama, and academic clubs, ensuring that every pupil has the opportunity to explore their interests and develop new skills outside the classroom.
The majority of boarding houses have recently undergone extensive renovations
as part of a £400,000 investment into the school, enhancing the overall boarding experience. This investment continues into the 2024/25 academic year. Weekly boarding at Stonyhurst o ers pupils the full spectrum of opportunities – academic enrichment, strong personal connections, and the chance to be part of a global community. It is an experience that encourages independence, lifelong friendships, and success in both education and life beyond school.

Parkour is fun, and with a focus on individual physical and mental challenge, which is why it’s a brilliant activity for children
Mention parkour to most people and the first thing they think of is crazy stunts across rooftops in TV adverts or the classic James Bond chase scene that opened Casino Royale. The second thing they think is: ‘That looks dangerous.’ But think again.
Now recognised o cially as a sport in the UK, parkour is becoming increasingly popular for children from primary years up. And, says Dan Edwardes, founder of Parkour Generations, it has an excellent safety record. “Statistically, parkour is way down on the risk list compared to most traditional sports. In fact, injuries per 1,000 hours is lower than almost any traditional sport.”
Dan was a UK pioneer of parkour, which is, in simplest terms, the discipline of freely moving in and around your space. While the roots of parkour can be traced back to everything from martial arts to obstacle courses, the parkour we know now is widely acknowledged to have developed in the Paris suburbs in the 1990s. It’s still a big deal there – in fact, a parkour torch bearer was part of the opening ceremony of this summer’s Olympics.
While the stunts on TV are undeniably cool, this is not how parkour is taught to children. It’s a logical step on from play. Watch any group of toddlers to teens in
a playground and you will see an almost obsessive compulsion to clamber up, around, over and through things. “Our birthright as human beings is to be very physically literate and very adaptive movers, and so all parkour is doing is tapping into that natural desire to move and play and giving it a little bit more discipline and focus,” says Dan.
While Parkour Generations’ work ranges from advising on stunts and sequences in film to training serious practitioners, its grassroots-level arm is central. It has worked with schools up and down the country and internationally since 2005, training teachers, leading sessions, and also designing and supplying parkour equipment and courses for indoor and outdoor facilities.
It’s also behind the London Parkour School, a centre specifically for the under 16 age group. This opened just after the pandemic and now hosts children from all over the capital. The school even runs micro parkour sessions for tots from six months. More centres are now being planned across London and other UK cities.
Parkour is a brilliant way for children to let o steam because it combines elements of play with physical and mental challenges. “About 25% of all play is what’s called locomotor play. So, if you leave kids alone, at least a quarter of their time will be spent in very physical, very active play,” says Dan. “If you catch them early and you encourage them to move, and you make
movement easier for them and more fun, they are much more likely to stick with it.”
So how does parkour work when you’re teaching it to a lively bunch of kids? “A lot of people might think that we get them to focus on parkour techniques but actually, especially when they are young, there’s not a lot of technical instruction. That’s not a good way to get kids moving. The better way is the constraint-led method, which is basically to give them some parameters,” he says.
This might be an obstacle course to complete as fast as possible then tag a teammate, or a task where they have to stay o the ground (a lava-style game). “They won’t see it as work, they won’t see it as exercise, they will just see it as fun, and they’ll want to do it over and over again,” says Dan. “As a teacher, that’s done your job for you – you don’t need to motivate them, they’re very happy to do that all day!”
It’s a style of movement that is both natural and empowering, as children test their own limits and learn to use the space presented to them. Along the way, they are developing strength, agility and coordination, but also thinking skills as they learn to judge risks, appraise situations and find practical solutions.
One other reason parkour is so appealing to children is that it’s not about competing to win. “It’s trained in groups, and it’s got a hugely strong community base and a social aspect to it, but it’s a solo skill,” says Dan. This gives it real advantages over traditional play-to-win sports. “About 50% of kids don’t have much interest in competitive sport. But equally, the kids that do have a competitive streak also enjoy parkour because it is so challenging.”
Schools are receptive to parkour – when you talk to any sports lead these days,
“Parkour develops strength, agility and coordination, but also thinking skills as children learn to judge risks and find practical solutions”
they are more focused on establishing lifelong habits of activity than on trophy cabinets. That said, parkour helps with both objectives. “Sports are fantastic in their physical development, but they are quite specialised in their movement skills,” says Dan. “It’s better to give a kid a broad based, general physical literacy when they are young. If they’ve got that they can adopt any sport they want for the rest of their life.” And the breadth of movements involved builds body resilience, something that Dan
believes can help guard against injuries. As to whether this will ever become an Olympic competition – probably not in the short term. Not that this matters to most children. For them, this is supercharged fun, with playful tests that build both confidence and a greater understanding of their own body’s amazing capabilities. For that reason alone, parkour is a brilliant addition to the sports roster.
