Cheshire CHATTER

Never

has a welcome page to Absolutely been more apt from Jennifer Hodgson

Absolutely Cheshire this month is all about weddings, so it feels incredibly fitting to be writing this column after just celebrating my wedding only a few weeks ago. When we were planning the wedding, we knew we didn't want a boring, traditional occasion. We wanted it to reflect who we are as people and what we knew our friends and family would enjoy. We chose Storyhouse for the ceremony, Barlounge for drinks and nibbles, and The White Horse at The Racecourse for the party – safe to say it went down as a wedding nobody will forget!

We both love live shows, movies and anything set in a theatre, so to have a venue like Storyhouse reflected who we are, and we could really make our own stamp on the place which was ideal. The sta were brilliant and really did make our day so perfect.

JACK AND JENNIFER

The suppliers we chose to bring our day to life made all the di erence. Steph Ledigo is an events planning genius and anyone in the Cheshire area would be a fool not to use her. We gave her a vision and she brought it to life, and for that we’ll be eternally grateful. Richard Lavender: our celebrant was epic. Richard told our story so perfectly, even sharing a few of our deepest darkest secrets he’d managed to wangle out of the bridal party. The flowers for the entire day were a work of art from Jenny's Flowers, who managed to create an aisle from scratch. Without a doubt Jenny is one of the best in the business.

The day really did go by in a flash, and if I could give any advice to any bride or groom out there, it’s just enjoy it. Try to remember the moments for how they made you feel, not what you look like on photos, videos or any of that falseness. It really is the best day of your lives so try not to get hung up on the little details and remember to take some time for the two of you to stop and reflect on all the love in the room.

What I’m looking forward to in November…

• The Holiday featuring the Orchestra at Liverpool Empire, which will kick off the festive spirit.

• Birthday dinner at Upstairs at The Grill, always the most incredible food.

• Hollies Farm Shop visit, so we can begin to stock up on those essentials ahead of the December mad rush.

Manchester’s Paige Williams, founder of the hugely popular P.Louise beauty brand, on how a di cult upbringing inspired her to make a success of her life

The end of the summer witnessed something very di erent from the norm in the retail world. In a highly anticipated TikTok Shop LIVE, P.Louise and TikTok looked to change the way the world shops for beauty products forever in a 12-hour festival extravaganza. The TikTok LIVE event saw P.Louise drastically reduce the cost of their most high-value items, as well as having over 10,000 of their best-sellers reduced to just £1, which gave people an opportunity to sample the high-quality range at an incredibly a ordable price point. As a TikTok only brand with no retail presence, P.Louise believes in the

importance of curating these one-of-a-kind moments for the consumer. With numerous ground-breaking TikTok LIVE events and brand experiences under their belt, P.Louise have proven that nothing is o limits when it comes to them putting the customer first. They have long been known as one of the most successful TikTok shops, selling over 250,000 units per month on the app to their 2.8 million strong community. For those who know the woman behind the brand, Paige Williams, such an event will come as no surprise. P. Louise holds community centrally within everything it does, and Paige attributes much of her brand’s success to her challenging upbringing and the values instilled in her through those experiences. Despite adversity and low expectations from others, she forged a path defined by resilience, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to empower others.

The Manchester-based entrepreneur’s path is quite the story. With a mother who was just 15-years-old and a father who was 19, Paige’s early life was far from a fairytale. However, despite adversity and low expectations from others, she forged a path defined by resilience, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to empower others.

When her parent’s relationship ended, Paige took on significant responsibilities from a young age, including caring for her younger brothers while her mother worked to make ends meet. By the age of 12, she was often left looking after her newborn brother alone, a responsibility that profoundly impacted her perspective on childhood.

“My childhood of my younger years was spent changing nappies,” Paige reflects.

“I think that a huge amount of the brand vision came from this place and the things

“A HUGE AMOUNT OF THE BRAND VISION CAME FROM MY CHILDHOOD”
“I WANT TO BE THE BEAUTY BRAND THAT HAS A HEARTBEAT”

I missed out on. On a personal level, I wanted to almost create the childhood for myself that I never had. But above all else, I wanted to create memories for people that I never got to make.”

Growing up, Paige faced numerous hardships. She recalls near-kidnappings and the struggles to a ord food. But this didn’t deter her; instead, it fueled her drive more. After working at a leading makeup brand as a cashier, Paige found something she loved – alongside her own unique makeup artistry style. Inspired by drag culture, she started to make a name for herself and her bold makeup artistry, particularly her intricate cut creases, garnered demand, especially within the Asian bridal makeup scene.

With an entrepreneurial spirit, Paige approached her grandmother with a bold idea to open a makeup academy. Her grandmother’s unwavering support, including a crucial £20,000 bank loan, and the encouragement to keep going were pivotal.

“I remember that the launch of the academy was a flop,” she recalls. “A few friends and family came. We served Lambrini and we cheered to a terrible launch. I was still very naive at only 21-years-old, but I sat in that shop and I planned what to do to make this work.”

As Paige continued to share her work online, her social media presence skyrocketed, and she began o ering online makeup courses, which quickly sold out; culminating in her first live course, earning her over £100,000.

As time went on, Paige realised that there was so much in the makeup industry that was missing. “I was using these products each and every day and seeing so many missing items,” she explains. “The cost of many of the products was incredibly high too. Alongside this, the eye base I was using daily was being discontinued – so I created my own. And that’s the P. Louise base that you see today.”

Under Paige’s leadership, P. Louise has grown exponentially and the brand has skyrocketed to forecasting sales of over £50 million, driven by Paige’s innovative use of social media platforms like TikTok Shop and her focus on customer education and community.

Her past experiences have deeply influenced her commitment to creating a brand that cherishes and protects childhood, a sentiment evident in P. Louise’s ethos and community initiatives. “Children’s entertainers run weekly. It’s little things like this that can not only o er experiences for kids, but also protect their ears from conversations they shouldn’t have to listen to.”

Paige is now a staunch advocate for female empowerment, drawing strength from the challenges she overcame. “I’ve been the woman wiping tears for my mum when a relationship has broken down. I’ve seen things a child shouldn’t see,” she says. “My vision for P. Louise extends far beyond the products themselves. I want to be the brand that has a heartbeat. This means a safe, welcoming space for all – online and

in person – irrespective of gender, race, or background. I want customers to feel the heartbeat of our brand, to feel welcome and to know that they belong. Judgement free.”

Paige’s journey from a council estate to leading a multi-million-pound beauty empire is nothing short of a modern-day fairytale. No one can deny that P. Louise demonstrates that no matter where you start, with passion, resilience, and hard work, you can achieve your dreams. Her story is a powerful reminder that beauty lies not just in products, but in the strength of the people who create them and the army of advocates who use them.

PROF. SIMON GARRINGTON: LOVELL’S RADAR – MISSILES AND SPACE DEBRIS

14 November

A brand-new series of Heritage Lectures is coming to Jodrell Bank. Discover hidden histories and surprising stories as leading scientists, archivists and historians reveal Jodrell Bank’s 80-year tale of intrigue, resolve and radio waves.

The iconic Lovell Radio Telescope, built to study radio waves from space, has been in constant use by the University of Manchester for scientific research. However, did you know that in the early 60s during the Cold War (including the Cuban Missile Crisis), the RAF secretly added radar capabilities to it?

“TAKE A ROMANTIC LOOK AT THE MYTHOLOGY OF VENUS”

At the time, it was Britain’s only such defence to warn of ballistic missiles aimed at the UK. Professor Garrington will unravel this story using primary records from the National Archives and Jodrell Bank itself. Moving into the modern day, with thousands of satellites orbiting Earth, listen on as he discusses modern experiments using radio telescopes to study and image space debris with bi-static radar.

Professor Garrington is Associate Director for Jodrell Bank Observatory, and Director of the e-MERLIN & VLBI National Facility based at Jodrell Bank. His research has included many areas of astrophysics, including radio galaxies and quasars, radio stars, and high precision astrometry to define fundamental celestial reference frames.

He led the e-MERLIN project from its inception: this connects six large radio telescopes spread across the UK via a dedicated optical fibre network to a central correlator at Jodrell Bank, and is used by hundreds of scientists in the UK and internationally for high resolution radio astronomy.

ASTRO NIGHT –VALENTINE’S SPECIAL

PERSON FIRST

The critically acclaimed comedian and actor Colin Hoult will be taking his brand new stand up show Colin on tour this autumn, and is coming to the Liverpool Royal Court Theatre Studio on 9 November. He reveals the man behind his much-loved characters, as he performs out of character for the first time, bringing audiences an insight to his childhood and growing up in Nottingham.

Q Hello Colin, tell us about your new show, ‘Colin’?

A It’s my first ever stand up show as myself. It’s an observational journey through 1980s Nottingham, specifically my childhood. I become all my family members as I recreate the loopy world I came from and how that a ects me now as a 45-year-old Dad. Also I explore why my late Dad, ‘Big Col’, chose to call me by his own name. It’s fun, warm, silly, authentic and honest, told with love, joy and understanding!

Q What prompted you to move away from the characters you are so known for and perform as yourself for the first time?

A I love a challenge. I never felt I could really be myself on stage – never thought I was particularly interesting to be honest! But I’d always tinkered with the idea of telling old family stories which went down great when I did them. Finally a few things aligned – my ADHD diagnosis, becoming a father and getting encouragement from friends to pursue it as myself. I never wanted to

Top comedian Colin Hoult is coming to the county this month and he explains why he’s happy to just be himself

get stuck being the one character forever and I felt the final chapter of Anna Mann seemed so complete I wanted to move on.

Q How has it felt performing as yourself, without the safety blanket of performing as a character?

A It was terrifying at first to be honest. It’s taken a while to find who I really am on stage. At first I tried to make is as unlike the characters as possible, but eventually I came to accept they are aspects of me so I let them come out if they want to! But I felt exposed and raw at first, but gradually really wonderful to feel accepted as myself.

Q What do you hope audiences take away from the show?

A I hope firstly they come away feeling like they’ve laughed themselves silly and had tons of fun. But alongside that I explore how much we didn’t understand back when I was growing up and how, to me, the beauty of understanding your own mind, especially if you are neurodiverse, is so important. It helps to mean you aren’t left feeling lost and alone or like there’s something inherently wrong with you.

Q We hear you have just returned from a rather successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe – tell us about that…

A It was this show, which went great. The audience response has been phenomenal and it’s been lovely to try and reach a broader, bigger audience.

Q How have audiences so far reacted to seeing you performing as yourself, and revealing more about yourself for the first time?

A It’s funny how much I worried about a lot of my past seeming too weird for anyone to relate to, but so many people connected with a lot of the observations I made about the world I grew up in. It was remarkable to feel that connection. Also fans of the old characters seemed to happily embrace me as Colin.

Q Your show reveals some insights into your growing up. If you could describe your family in one word, what would it be?

A Whack-a-mole.

Q In what ways has your family life growing up informed your own family life now that you have a family of your own?

A My mum was always making up songs and weird jokes when we were kids. I’ve definitely passed that on. I feel like there was a lot of fear of doing something wrong or getting it wrong or being looked down on somehow that I try a lot to avoid passing on, but it’s not easy. There’s a lot of pessimism and lack of confidence that can get stuck in your head when you’re not from money and security and I try not to pass that on. As I say in the show I try to say to my kids ‘if they can do it, you can do it’ because we learnt ‘if they can do it, we probably shouldn’t’. I think the most important thing I’ve tried to learn, which I really struggle to maintain, is just to breathe, slow down and think and don’t get sucked into panic and fear.

Q You have done some rather exciting TV work alongside your live comedy career. What are the main di erences for you between performing on stage and for TV?

A On stage I can be as big and silly as I want to. On TV that can be absolutely disastrous! Unless I’m doing a character in Ricky Gervais’ shows, which I seem to get away with. You have to be broader and more expressive on stage, but you have the joy of leading people on a journey and seeing them respond to it in real time.

Colin Hoult will be visiting Liverpool Royal Court Theatre Studio on 9 November. For tickets, visit liverpoolsroyalcourt.com/studio

Taking REFUGE

Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester is fast becoming one of the hottest destinations in the North West, with its dining options delighting foodies everywhere

With its namesake clocktower and grand Victorian facade, Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is a landmark luxury hotel in the heart of Manchester. Step outside and you’ll be on the doorstep of the Palace Theatre, or take a few more steps to visit a plethora of vibrant eateries, quirky cocktail bars and locally-inspired galleries and museums. A little further afield, you’ll find famous music and events venues O2 Apollo, AO Arena, Co-Op Live and Aviva Studios, as well as the iconic Old Tra ord and Etihad Stadiums. With a passion for authenticity, they’re all about making your stay as memorable as possible. From check-in to check-out,

every interaction is warm yet flu -free, making the Manchester hotel a draw for international travellers and locals alike.

The Refuge Dining Room is a glam-meets-industrial destination restaurant that brings all tribes to the core of Kimpton Clocktower Hotel: local workers, city residents, visitors, business travellers, and everyone in between. The menu is eclectic, with small dishes and sharing platters that meld flavours from all over the world with Mancunian style. Absolutely sat down with Executive Chef, Paul Beckley, to find out how his past is inspiring what we find on his plates in the present.

Q When did you first get a taste for cooking?

A I first got a taste for cooking whilst at home, during my last years of secondary school. My mum was a

“I simply grew sick of burnt and bland food, I craved flavour”

terrible cook and I simply grew sick of burnt and bland food, I craved flavour!

Q When did it become a serious career consideration?

A Following not achieving the best grades after finishing secondary school, I made the decision to go to Hopwood Hall College and enrolled on a catering course. The lecturers were inspiring due to their vast knowledge and passion, this as well as an opportunity for work experience in London made me realise that I was serious about cooking and wanted to do it as a career.

Q What was your first professional job in a kitchen?

A My first professional job was at The Park Lane Hotel in London, in their fine dining restaurant.

Q Pre-Refuge, where has your culinary journey taken you?

A My career has taken me from

North to South and back again!

I started my career in London working in several hotels including The Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, before heading back up North to Liverpool at The Titanic Hotel and then returning to Manchester. I thrive on witnessing young chefs that I’ve been fortunate enough to have a hand in training progress in their careers and land jobs in amazing restaurants. My cooking career has taken me out of the UK and across the globe as I have had the joy of working in places such as New York and Hong Kong, which was an experience I’ll never forget.

“Flavours and nostalgia play big parts with my menu choices”

Q Would you say you have a particular cooking style now?

A As I’ve got older (definitely not wiser), my style of food has become very relaxed. I love the fact that food gives people a chance to escape from their daily busy schedules whilst gathering around a table, enjoying great company, amazing wine and hearty food.

Q What initially attracted you to working at Refuge?

A Refuge is one of a kind – as soon as I stepped inside the venue, I was sold! The environment is relaxed, and the décor is absolutely beautiful, there is no other space in Manchester like it.

Q How have you approached the menus?

A The menus at Refuge are very much a team e ort, the family we have in the kitchen all have a hand in how we produce and develop the food. It’s as much about flavours we all associate with, plus nostalgia plays a big part with my menu choices.

Q Do you look to use local produce where possible?

A I try to, but I’m more of a believer that if the produce is good, it needs to be used. Controversial I know.

Q What dishes are you really loving right now and why?

A I’m loving all the food on the current menu at Refuge, the team have worked so hard to get this in place, especially Head Chef Cameron. Standout dishes for me include the Mojo Rojo Pork Belly with Miso Aubergine, paired with Beef Fat Mash Potato, finishing with the indulgent Cheeky Vimto Trifle.

Q What are the Christmas plans at Refuge?

A Cook as many turkeys as possible and make it a Christmas to remember for as many people as possible!

Kimpton Clocktower and Refuge are known for throwing a good party, so keep an eye out for more details.

Q Do you like to cook Christmas dinner at home too?

A I love to cook at home, hearty home cooked food is my go-to. I enrol my dad as sous chef for the day, prepping and peeling the potatoes and sprouts.

Q What makes the perfect Christmas dinner for you?

A Christmas dinner for me is as much about the people than it is the food, getting everyone gathered around the table and enjoying terrible cracker jokes is special.

Q What plans do you have for Refuge in 2025?

A Revolution! Watch this space…

Authentic I NDIA

Recipes from family kitchens in the Bengal and Punjab regions

Words ROMY GILL

Baingan & Aloo

Sabzi / Aubergine & Potato Curry

Serves 4

This delightful pairing showcases the contrasting tastes and textures of aubergines and potatoes in a medley that is comforting and full of depth. With its earthy and slightly bitter undertones, aubergine sits well next to potato and each one complements rather than overshadows the other. This combination creates a hearty wholesome dish, which is prepared with different spices in homes across India.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 small aubergines (eggplants), diced into 3 cm (1 in) cubes

• 1 tsp salt

• 1 tsp ground turmeric

• 60 ml (2 fl oz/¼ cup) sunflower oil

• 1 tsp cumin seeds

• 200 g (7 oz) red onions, thinly sliced

• 10 g (½oz) ginger root, thinly sliced

• 4–5 large garlic cloves, thinly sliced

• 2–3 green chillies, cut in half lengthwise

• 1 large tomato, chopped

• Large handful of fresh coriander, chopped

• 1 tsp ground coriander

• 1 tsp garam masala

• 200 g (7 oz) potatoes, peeled and cut into 2 cm (¾ in) half-moons

• 30 ml (1 fl oz/2 tbsp) water

To serve

• Roti

METHOD

1 Place the aubergines in a large bowl with half the salt and half the turmeric. Mix together and set aside for 10 minutes.

2 Heat 35 ml (1 fl oz/2 tablespoons) of the oil in a frying pan (skillet) over a high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the marinated aubergines and cook for 5–6 minutes. Once cooked, place the aubergines back in the bowl. Using the same pan, heat the remaining oil. Once the oil is hot, add the cumin seeds and, as soon as they start to sizzle, add the onions and cook on a high heat for 4–5 minutes. Add the ginger, garlic and chillies and cook for a further 2–3 minutes. Add the chopped tomato, and the remaining turmeric, chopped fresh coriander (cilantro), ground coriander and garam masala. Mix to combine, cover the pan with a lid, lower the heat to medium and cook for 2 minutes.

3 Next, stir in the potatoes then add 2 tablespoons water. Cover the pan and cook over a low heat for 5–6 minutes until the potatoes are almost cooked. Add the aubergines, mix again and cook for a further 10 minutes. Once cooked, remove from the heat and serve hot with warm roti.

Murg Makhani Butter Chicken

Serves 4-5

There are so many different recipes for butter chicken. This is my take, because there is a lot of spark and dispute going on in India about butter chicken. We served so much butter chicken in our restaurant, so I went in search of the very best butter chicken recipe and researched how it all started. I found this gave me a better understanding of this best-loved dish. With its silky smooth, gently spiced tomato, cashew and cream gravy, it’s a comforting, warming dish that feels decadent. In 2013, when I started to take a closer look at butter chicken and its history, my mentor, chef Manjit Gill, took me to the first ever Moti Mahal restaurant in Daryagang in Delhi.

A restaurant co-founded by Kundan Lal Jaggi, Kundal Lal Gwujral and Maggu (also known as Thakur Das) and it was where they created both butter chicken and dal makhani.

INGREDIENTS

• 750 g (1 lb 10 oz) skinless, boneless chicken (thighs and breast), cut into bite-size pieces

For the marinade

• 10 g (1/2 oz) ginger root, peeled and grated (shredded)

• 3 large garlic cloves, peeled and grated (shredded)

• 2 tsp tandoori masala

• 1 tsp ground cumin

• 1 tsp ground coriander

• 1 tsp ground black pepper, 1 tsp salt

• 2 tbsp yoghurt

• Juice of 1/2 lemon

• 30 ml (1 fl oz/2 tbsp) sunflower oil

For the sauce

• 500 g (1 lb 2 oz) tomatoes

• 50 g (2 oz) butter

• 20 g (3/4 oz) ginger root, peeled and grated (shredded)

• 6 large garlic cloves, peeled and grated (shredded)

• 1 tsp tomato purée (paste)

• 1 tsp tandoori masala

• 1 tsp ground cumin

• 1 tsp ground coriander

• 1 tsp chilli powder

• 1 tsp salt

• 1 tsp sugar

• 30 g (11/2 oz) ground cashew nuts

• 30 ml (1 fl oz/2 tbsp) double (heavy) cream

• 6–8 green cardamom seeds, crushed

• 2 tsp dried fenugreek leaves (kasoori methi)

To serve

• Your choice of Indian flatbreads or rice

“There is a lot of spark and dispute going on in India about butter chicken”

METHOD

1 To make the marinade, mix all of the marinade ingredients together in a large bowl. Prick the chicken pieces with a fork to allow the marinade to penetrate the meat. Add the chicken to the bowl and stir well to coat thoroughly. Cover the bowl and set aside in the fridge to marinate for at least a couple of hours.

2 When ready to cook, preheat the oven to 180°C fan/400°F/gas 6.

3 Spread the marinated chicken out on a baking tray and cook in the hot oven for 15 minutes.

4 While the chicken is cooking, make the sauce. If the chicken finishes cooking before you have finished making the sauce, switch the oven o after the 15 minutes and leave the meat to rest in the oven. Blanch the tomatoes in a bowl of boiling water for a few minutes, then remove their skins. Cut into quarters and remove the seeds, then roughly chop and place in a food processor. Blitz to a smooth purée.

5 Heat the butter in a saucepan over a medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the ginger and garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the puréed fresh tomatoes as well as the tomato purée and cook for 8–10 minutes until the tomatoes are cooked through, stirring regularly to avoid them sticking and burning. Add all the spices, chilli powder, salt and sugar, mix well and cook for a further 2 minutes until emulsified.

6 Lower the heat, then add the ground cashew nuts and cream, and stir well. Add 500–600 ml (20–24 fl oz/21/2 cups–scant 3 cups) water – the quantity you choose to add depends on how runny you want the sauce to be. Bring the mixture to a boil, and when it starts bubbling, add the chicken, lower the heat and cook for a further 8–10 minutes. Sprinkle over the cardamom seeds and dried fenugreek leaves. Stir and leave to rest for at least 10 minutes before serving with rice or any Indian flatbreads.

Masala Omelette Spicy Omelette

Makes 2

Omelettes were a huge part of my diet when I was growing up. They were something quick and easy for my dad to make for us when our mum was in hospital in Kolkata for her radiotherapy treatments. We would roll these omelettes up inside flatbreads or place them between two slices of bread toasted in a pan to make a sandwich, then eat them – always with tomato ketchup.

INGREDIENTS

• 20 g (¾oz) butter, at room temperature

• 3 large organic eggs, beaten

• 1 small red or white onion, peeled and finely chopped

• 2 green chillies, chopped

• 10 g (½ oz) ginger root, peeled and finely chopped

• Small handful of fresh coriander (cilantro), chopped

• 1 tsp cumin seeds

• ½ tsp ground black pepper

• 1 tsp ground coriander

• 1 tsp ground cumin

• ½ tsp ground turmeric

• ½ tsp salt

• 20 ml (1½ tbsp) whole (full-fat) milk

To serve

• Slices of bread, toasted

• Tomato ketchup

METHOD

1 Place half the butter in a large bowl along with the remaining ingredients and whisk until combined.

2 Heat the remaining butter in a frying pan (skillet) over a medium heat. As soon as it melts, add the omelette mixture and cook for 2 minutes. Using a spatula, turn the omelette over and cook for a further two minutes.

4 Serve hot with ketchup and toast.

SLOW DOWN Christmas

Speed up the festivities with slow cooked meats from Booths this Christmas

The secret to spending less time cooking this Christmas, but still enjoying a delicious, succulent roast?

A precision slowcooked main that’s finished at home. Slow-cooked meat has a more intense flavour and remains tender and succulent, as the ingredients baste in the cooking juices. As the dish is slow cooked over a few hours, all that’s needed to finish it o to perfection is a shorter stint in the oven at a higher temperature – delicious!

The family owned, Northern food and drink retailer Booths announced earlier this year that all beef, lamb and pork steaks and

joints sold at the in store Butcher are now sourced exclusively from their Northern heartlands of Lancashire, Cheshire, Yorkshire, and Cumbria, what they like to call Booths Country. Booths has long held a British only sourcing policy for its fresh meat and has its own Butchery Academy to train store butchers. Christmas will be the perfect time to experience the top quality produce.

E.H. Booth & Co. Argentian Malbec, 75cl, Argentina  £10.25

Heady aromas of blackberries, blueberries and mixed spices. The palate is rich with flavours of black cherries and hints of cinnamon and chocolate. Great with a BBQ, succulent steak or a Sunday roast.

Heaphy Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 75cl, New Zealand  £14

A maritime nose of seagrass and salinity with pink citrus notes. A palate of concentrated margarita zest, green and red apple notes with a rich mouthfeel. Delicious paired with scallops, seafood linguine or a goats’ cheese salad.

Booths has been importing quality wines since 1870, and the current curators of their awardwinning selection are Victoria and Rachael. Both use their expertise to offer Booths’ customers a wide, eclectic range, value for money, and uncompromising quality. In 2024 they were voted Wine Supermarket of The Year in the People’s Choice Wine Awards, an award they value very highly as it’s voted for by the people who matter most — their customers. orders.booths.co.uk

MONSOON'S ROSE ORGANZA BRIDAL DRESS IVORY

As we move into the autumn and winter of 2024, the wedding industry is abuzz with new trends that promise to make each ceremony unique and memorable. From breathtaking venues to fashion-forward dresses, the season is set to deliver a blend of tradition and innovation. Here’s an in-depth look at what’s trending for weddings in the colder months of 2024.

VENUES

Rustic Elegance

The charm of rustic elegance continues to captivate couples. Barns and farm venues o er a cosy, intimate setting that complements the autumnal aesthetic perfectly. Decor often includes elements like fairy lights, wooden accents, and seasonal foliage, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Winter Wonderland Castles

For those who dream of a fairytale wedding, castles and historic estates provide a majestic backdrop. These venues o er grand ballrooms and enchanting gardens that can be transformed into a winter wonderland with twinkling lights, ice sculptures, and luxurious fabrics.

DECOR

Jewel Tones and Metallics

Deep jewel tones such as emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red are paired with metallic accents in gold, copper, and bronze. These colours add richness and depth to the decor, perfect for the colder months.

Seasonal Blooms and Foliage

Florals for autumn and winter weddings focus on seasonal blooms such as dahlias, chrysanthemums, and roses, combined with rich greenery like eucalyptus and pine. Adding elements like berries, pinecones and branches enhances the seasonal theme. Candlelit Ambiance

Candlelight is being used extensively to create a romantic and intimate ambiance. From candelabras on dining tables to lanterns lining walkways, the soft glow of candles adds warmth to any venue.

FASHION

Bridal Gowns

Classic elegance: timeless silhouettes such as A-line and ball gowns remain popular, but with modern twists like o -the-shoulder necklines, illusion sleeves, and intricate lace detailing. Statement sleeves: dramatic sleeves are making a big impact, ranging from billowing bishop sleeves to structured pu sleeves. These add a touch of romance and grandeur to bridal attire. Colour infusions: while white and ivory are traditional, subtle infusions of colour are trending. Blush, champagne, and even soft pastels are making appearances in bridal collections, o ering a unique twist on the classic wedding dress.

Bridesmaid Dresses

Mix-and-match: bridesmaids are embracing individuality with mixand-match dresses in complementary colours and styles. This trend allows each bridesmaid to choose a dress that suits her body type and personal taste. Velvet and sequins: rich fabrics like velvet and sequined dresses are popular choices for autumn and winter weddings. These materials not only add a festive touch, but also provide warmth.

Groom and Groomsmen Attire Classic tuxedos with a twist: while classic black tuxedos remain a staple, grooms are adding personal touches with coloured velvet jackets, patterned bow ties, and unique cu inks. Layered looks: layering is key for winter weddings, with groomsmen sporting vests and overcoats in rich fabrics like wool and tweed, adding both style and practicality.

“Buying vintage dresses is becoming more popular”

FOOD & DRINK

Farm-to-Table Menus

Locally sourced, seasonal ingredients are at the forefront of wedding menus. Couples are opting for farm-to-table catering that emphasises fresh, sustainable, and delicious dishes.

Comfort Foods

As the temperature drops, comfort foods become a popular choice. Think gourmet mac and cheese, hearty stews, and roasted vegetables. These dishes not only satisfy, but also evoke a sense of warmth and homeliness.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainable Decor

Reusable decor elements, such as renting instead of buying, using biodegradable confetti, and incorporating potted plants instead of cut flowers, are ways couples are reducing waste.

Ethical Attire

Choosing wedding attire made from sustainable fabrics or buying vintage and second-hand dresses is becoming more popular. Some brides are even opting for dresses they can dye and wear again.

TAKE NOTICE SIT UP AND

James Power, founder of Find Your Backbone, extols the virtues of the Alexander Technique and how it can change your life

Q When did you first come across the Alexander Technique?

A I had a severe stroke when I was six and this left me with muscle pain and weakness down the left side. When I was 15, a lovely teacher told me about the Alexander Technique and how this could help reduce stress and muscular tension. He was totally right and since then I have gone from often struggling to walk 13 metres to being able to regularly run 13 miles.

Q You graduated with a first in English – so how did you end up launching Find Your Backbone?

A I wrote speeches for many years after university and have taught presentation skills. I found that the Alexander Technique became the cornerstone of everything

“It's freedom to stop and let go of habits that cause so much su ering”

I did with clients who were speaking in public, allowing me to teach them how to remain calm and poised under pressure. Most importantly, it helped people improve their confidence and performance in front of an audience. In fact, the Alexander Technique is taught in many of the best acting and music colleges around the world.

Q What is the Alexander Technique?

A For me, the Alexander Technique is freedom. Freedom to stop and let go of habits and behaviours that cause so much su ering, and freedom to think and move with grace and poise. Every day, I see the impact the Alexander Technique has in helping people reduce stress and improve

their posture and how they move. The way we use our bodies and minds impacts our performance in every area of our lives.

Q What happens in a typical session of yours?

A I will ask students to carry out a simple task, like sitting in a chair or picking up an object. From here, I’ll help people stop and notice unnecessary tension. I’ll show the student how they can move in a way that is freer and involves less tension. I have special interests in both running and presentation skills, so lots of my clients come to me to help them carry out these activities with more confidence, less pain and less tension.

Q Back pain is a huge issue in today’s hunched-over-the-desk world, so how does the Alexander Technique help?

A Almost every day, I see how e ective the Alexander Technique is for back and neck pain. The British Medical Journal published the results of a large clinical trial in 2008, which showed that people who had Alexander lessons had 86% fewer days of back pain, much less incapacity and a better quality of life compared with those who received the usual GP care. A further large clinical trial at the University of York confirmed the e ectiveness of the technique for reducing neck pain. I also do a lot of work at the moment with clients who are struggling with back and neck pain from working at a computer for long hours. Back pain is one of the biggest causes of long-term absence so I’ve been helping businesses o er training to their sta on how to work in a way that reduces the risk of back and neck pain.

Q What else do you use the Alexander Technique to help?

A I have sung and played guitar and piano for years and have been really fortunate to work with some exceptionally talented musicians, many of whom have been struggling with stage fright or repetitive strain injuries.

Q Can you describe two very di erent case studies of how you have helped clients?

A I worked with a partner of a well-known law firm. As a solicitor, he worked long hours at a desk and was finding that this was taking a toll on his health. I helped the client improve his posture and reduce stress. Another client is a clinical psychologist and because he worked in a caring profession he wanted ways to help improve his own wellbeing. His role could be quite stressful and he su ered from back pain. We approached the Alexander Technique through running and starting with short runs, we built up to completing a 10km run together.

Q If anyone isn’t sure about asking for your help, what would you say to them?

A The best thing is to book an initial consultation and talk with a STATregistered teacher. A teacher will be able to guide you in the right direction and will always work alongside your doctor. Most people will know very quickly whether the Alexander Technique could help them. Very often, students experience moving very di erently and with less tension after just a few lessons. They can then decide how far they would like to take the lessons.

GREAT STRIDES

Keen runner Carly Glendinning tries the high-tech Peloton Tread

Reaching peak popularity during the pandemic, Peloton is known for bringing spinning classes into the home with its Bike+. But I'm at the premium fitness brand’s swish HQ in London’s Covent Garden to try the 'Tread'. The Tread is a dream machine for serious runners like me. With a 23.8" HD touchscreen (that tilts so that you can do classes on and o the treadmill), it also has front and rear-facing studio-quality speakers. I've used the Peloton Bike+ before, so I already have an account and am able to login and see all of my training metrics

to-date. Peloton is constantly pushing the boundaries when it comes to innovative content, so I’m excited to start with a ‘Lanebreak’ class – which aims to gamify running. I follow a spinning wheel around a running track on the screen, adjusting the incline and speed dials in order to hit the targets. I'm not a gamer myself, but I can definitely see how it could get additive (in the best possible way). Next up, is a 20 minute HIIT Run with the upbeat Jess Sims. This is similar to the interval training that I usually do in the gym, and I really enjoy this class. As I pick up the pace, I notice how quiet the running belt is compared to other treadmills.

I finish with a cool down run with Jermaine Johnson. The soundtrack features lots of feel-good tracks, and I'm able to save my favourites to the playlist on my profile for later. Most impressive though is the ‘Pace Targets’ feature, which allows you to personalise your running training by selecting from 10 levels at the start of the class. It suggests speed and incline ranges for you as you run, which makes me want to push myself. I might have only scratched the surface of what the Tread is capable of, but I leave definitely wanting more.

The Peloton Tread starts at £3,345. onepeloton.com

Nurture &Nature Nature

Charlotte Findlater on the botanical theme found across this stunning home renovation in the Lake District

Peace, serenity, and escape – that’s the feeling this home evokes. The interior of this Lake District home is designed to be an architectural dreamscape filled with whimsical details, natural motifs, and entertaining features for ultimate relaxation.

A consistent design theme since the home renovation began has been to incorporate inside/outside space; whether the open plan kitchen, the garden room’s sliding doors or big bay windows, opening rooms up to natural light and the gardens beyond is key to our clients’ experience and immersion in their surrounding garden. Here, I explain the thought process behind the design of the principal bedroom.

INSPIRATION AND AIMS

Our inspiration for this bedroom was the fabulous floriferous gardens in which the property sits. The bedroom is infused with a mix of English country style furniture, a custom new Oak wardrobe, antique pieces, abstract artwork that evokes the natural

world and immediate landscape, all bound up in earthy tones and floral fabrics.

Our aim for the bedroom was to create a tranquil biophilic retreat, where the serenity and simplicity of this botanically inspired bedroom would promote a sense of mindfulness and a break from the fast-paced world. Disconnecting from technology, an immersion in a nature-inspired space that would quieten the mind and promote a deep sense of

relaxation and ultimately a restful sleep. Starting with the vestibule that leads into the primary bedroom, we removed an old builtin cupboard and stripped back the original purlin beams. Continuing this on into the bedroom where a barrel ceiling was book ended by the original purlins again stripped back to reveal the natural beauty of the wood and the inherent architecture of the building. There were two windows in the room, one of which overlooks the stunning gardens, the other was at an odd height and did not allow for the breathtaking views of the lake and mountain scenery over which it looked. Upon carefully considering the layout of the room, we wanted to orientate the bed towards the lake and mountains so those views could be enjoyed. We decided to take out the current window and instead created a terrace o the bedroom inserting large sliding doors. The view could now be enjoyed from the moment our clients woke up, to enjoying romantic moments on the terrace in the evening. The railings we designed are further represented in other external terracing areas of the garden. Each spindle evokes a twig, they are not perfectly straight and have an imprint of bark on them, which ties back into both our biophilic and Wabi Sabi ethos.

“Our aim was to create a tranquil biophilic retreat”

INCORPORATING NATURE’S GREEN PALETTE

The first step with the design of this principal bedroom has been to represent the beautiful floriferous garden in which the property sits, inspiring our colour scheme and thematic of the room.

We have incorporated a lot of green around the interior of this property – the predominant colour of nature, it nurtures happiness and tranquillity and is a remarkably versatile and fluid colour. We use green as our neutral foundation upon which we can layer colour and pattern. At Charlotte Findlater, we always think of green as our neutral, as the overriding colour of nature it goes with everything and encourages space for positive thinking.

We aim to have that link with nature at every touch point. In this bedroom we have sheepskin rugs which represent the heritage of the Lake District. Selecting Oak for our wardrobes, natural wool carpets and a locally made bed throws representing the colours of the fells that can be seen in the distance. The fabric we opted for on the curtains is a traditional print of English flowering peonies along with other garden flowers providing a direct link to the

gardens. In summer, floriferous bouquets are dotted throughout the home including the principal bedroom all cut from the garden.

Natural fibres and materials are the fundamentals of all our Charlotte Findlater projects. We take a salutogenic approach to all our projects. In this bedroom we selected natural certified organic cotton sheets and pillowcases. The paint is made from the purest and healthiest plant-based ingredients and is certified as vegan too. Natural wool carpets, the linen curtains are printed locally in the Lake District using ECOFAST technology, a digital printing method which uses 50% less water than traditional techniques.

LIGHTING THE WAY

The pendant adds a touch of glamour, its natural bronze tones and large air pocketed baubles catching the eye, reflecting the natural light that pours in through the fulllength glass doors, bouncing it around the room. The air pockets reminded us of bubbles in water, providing a direct connection to the lake beyond the home. The pendant helps create the feeling of space, drawing the eye up into the unusual ceiling shape exuding light and fresh air and, in conjunction with the doors, it helps to bring the outside in.

We have elevated the overall ambiance in the room by layering di erent types of lighting, such as dimmable, ambient, decorative, and task lighting, to create soft, subtle illumination.

CRAFTSMANSHIP IN ACTION

Each handle on the Oak wardrobe has been meticulously handcrafted using just a small furnace, in this way they are a slow production item, each will further patina with age. The sockets, dimmers and switches have an organic mottled finish, are hand cast, each one uniquely developing a patina that will continue to develop with use and age.

Our Lake District tweed throws are designed by the Lancashire and Lakes Guild of Spinners using wool from the Lake District, the colour schemes for the throws are all inspired by the colours of nature. The wardrobes are made locally by our expert joinery workshop, all wood is FSC Certified. Whilst we have incorporated pattern into the design of this sumptuous bedroom, we have ultimately sought to create a serene and peaceful haven that is simple, luxurious and calm.

REAL GREEKS

ATHENS

Athens is a wonderful destination with a huge variety of things to. Apart from the Acropolis there are countless fascinating museums, lots of wonderful places to eat – and you can even go to the beach. Sandy Cadiz-Smith explores the Greek capital over the page.

ATHENIAN

Odyssey

Legends of gods and heroes come alive in Athens – and you can go to the beach, too

As the oldest capital city in Europe, Athens is steeped in ancient history and mythology. It’s where Socrates philosophised in bustling agoras, where the Parthenon gleams under the golden sun, and where legends of gods and heroes come alive. As you wander through Athens, you’re not just exploring a modern metropolis; you’re stepping into a time machine that whisks you back to the age of democracy, epic battles, and timeless art.

The streets are paved with the rich tapestry of history from the remnants of Roman markets to Ottoman relics and Byzantine buildings and they’re also teeming with bars, restaurants, and shopping opportunities. Our luxurious, five-star hotel, the xenodocheio Milos, is right in the heart of all this glory, the perfect base for exploration. We check into our Executive City View room overlooking the Old Parliament House. It’s spacious and contemporary with a fabulous marble bathroom and it’s surprisingly quiet, considering we’re in the middle of all the action. We’ve discovered a little oasis.

Athens is the perfect walking city. We stroll through the buzzing area of Monastiraki, with its flea markets and street vendors, and plenty of fabulous shopping opportunities to enjoy. We meander around the narrow, sloping streets of Plaka, just below the Acropolis with its tumbling bougainvilleas and vertiginous restaurants and bars. We revel in plenty of al fresco dining at traditional tavernas abuzz with conversation and take endless pictures of the beautiful streets before stopping for drinks at one of the many roof-top bars. You really can’t beat those Acropolis views with the constantly changing light from sunrise to sunset.

The highlight of any trip here has to be a visit to the Acropolis which dominates the Athens skyline, guarding the city from on high. We ascend the rocky path absorbing stories of myth and legend until we reach the plateau,

dominated by the Parthenon – its marble columns gleaming in the Mediterranean sun. We can almost hear the whispers of ancient processions and rituals and somehow feel a profound connection with the past. It’s absolutely breathtaking.

Just when we don’t think we can’t fall more in love with Athens, we discover we can go to the beach. Yes, Athens has several beaches, with beautiful beach clubs o ering comfortable beds and restaurants serving delicious Greek fare. Like Dot Beach Vibes, a short drive from our hotel. We while away hours swimming in the crystal clear, sparkling sea and sip cocktails with our feet in the sand. Until it’s time for a sumptuous lunch on the shaded terrace taking in the bluest of Greek vistas. Quite simply heavenly.

Back at the sanctuary that is xenodocheio Milos, we enjoy revitalising massages before heading down to estiatorio Milos for dinner. Known as one of the best fish restaurants in Athens, it also has branches around the world, including in London, Dubai, and New York. We enjoy a feast of the freshest fish around served in stylish surroundings with impeccable service. Greek hospitality, cooking, and wine are hard to beat.

It all makes for the perfect conclusion to our exploration of this magnificent city. While every corner turned seems like a step back in history, the city’s lively spirit means it’s not only a reflection of the past but a celebration of the present. And it’s a lot of fun, too.

PERFECT GETAWAY

Why Lyons Holiday Parks in North Wales is spot on for a family break

The allure of North Wales’ stunning coastline, dotted with charming towns and breathtaking landscapes, has long made it a favoured destination for family holidays. As a family of four, we recently embarked on a fourday staycation at Lyons Holiday Parks, a choice that promised relaxation, adventure, and quality time together. With Lyons celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2024, it was the perfect opportunity to experience why they are hailed as one of the nation’s favourite holiday park operators.

Our journey began with a sense of excitement as we drove along the scenic North Wales coast, heading towards Lyons Robin Hood, the flagship park in Lyons’ impressive portfolio. Conveniently located near the charming town of Prestatyn, this park o ered us a perfect blend of activities, relaxation, and exploration.

A Warm Welcome and Family Comfort

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly and attentive Lyons sta , who made the check-in process seamless. It’s always a pleasure to arrive somewhere that feels immediately welcoming, and Lyons certainly delivered on that front. The accommodation was clean, spacious, and well-equipped, providing us with all the comforts of home, which made settling in an absolute breeze.

Fun-Filled Days: Activities for All Ages

Lyons Robin Hood is a treasure trove of activities, catering to the diverse interests of every family member. The heated indoor pools, complete with exciting slides, quickly

became a favourite for our two children. We even booked a private session with the underwater scooters, which turned out to be a thrilling experience, allowing us to explore new depths in the pool while the kids had a blast zooming around underwater.

For parents, the park o ers a well-equipped gym, steam room, and sauna – perfect for some well-deserved relaxation. I must admit, the ability to unwind in the sauna while knowing the kids were safely entertained in the pool was a true luxury. Evenings at Lyons Robin Hood were equally delightful, with a range of entertainment options that kept the entire family engaged. From lively shows featuring guest characters for the little ones to all-singing, all-dancing performances that had us tapping our feet, the entertainment complex truly came alive at night.

Exploring the Surrounding Area: Prestatyn and Beyond

No family holiday is complete without a bit of exploration, and Lyons Holiday Parks’

prime location made it easy to venture beyond the park. Prestatyn, with its beautiful beachfront and quaint selection of shops and eateries, was just a short drive away. We spent a leisurely afternoon strolling along the promenade, enjoying ice creams while the kids built sandcastles – a quintessential British holiday experience. For those willing to travel a little further, the picturesque town of Llandudno is about an hour’s drive from the park. With its Victorian charm and the stunning Great Orme headland, Llandudno is a must-visit. The scenic drive alone is worth the trip, o ering panoramic views of the coast and countryside. The walk around Great Orme provided a perfect mix of history, nature, and breathtaking views, making it an ideal family outing. One of the highlights of our stay was

learning about Lyons Holiday Parks’ upcoming 100-year anniversary celebrations. It’s clear that Lyons has been perfecting the art of the family holiday for a century, and they are pulling out all the stops to mark this milestone.

Holiday Home Ownership: A Tempting Possibility

EDUCATION

DIFFERENT VIEW

A thought-provoking exhibition which explores Black British history and culture through the eyes of 600 Warrington schoolchildren opened on 12 October. Artist Tina Ramos Ekongo spent four months working with eight schools delivering workshops to young students, aged between seven and 11, and one school in south Warrington working with early years children. The pupils then responded to what they had learnt about Black people’s contribution to modern Britain and how it related to their own sense of identity and values through the creation of artworks.

NEW beginnings

Absolutely Cheshire meets Serena Cubbin, the new headteacher of St Anselm’s College in Birkenhead

Q It’s very early days of your headship at St Anselm’s College...

A I have been in post for five weeks at the time of writing. It was always my ambition to be headteacher of the College from the very first day I walked through those doors almost eight years ago. I am extremely honoured and privileged to hold this position in a College steeped in history and academic excellence. I know and understand the impact that being an Anselmian can have on a student: my husband was a past student (and currently works in the College also) and my son is in Year 10, so I see first hand how fantastic this College is.

Q In a nutshell, what does St Anselm’s College o er?

A Our mission is to ensure that every student is given the opportunity to reach their full potential through the use of their God given talents. Where inclusivity, wellbeing and a sense of

belonging is extended to every member of the community, encompassing past, present and future Anselmians.

At our College we take immense pride in our reputation for high academic performance and in setting high standards for every student. Learning centred on both challenge and support are fundamental elements of our ambitious curriculum. We are extremely proud of the academic excellence that our students achieve, and of the genuine drive our sta have to transform future aspirations into reality for all of our students. Our commitment is to nurture not only brilliant minds, but also compassionate

hearts, fostering an environment where each student is invited to live out the values of Catholic social teaching and have a direct impact on the lives of others. We do this through charitable works, such as with SVP and the Martin Gallier Suicide Safe Community. Our motto ‘Fides Quaerens Intellectum’, which translates to ‘Faith seeking understanding’, is a reminder to us all to seek God; not only with our hearts, but with our minds, and in all that we do. It ultimately underpins our daily interactions with one another. We are champions of respect, tolerance and diversity as recognised by our Mental Health Award and Anti-Bullying Alliance Schools Award.

Q What would we find in a typical classroom?

A Walking through the College and visiting classrooms is the highlight of my day. It’s where you witness passionate teachers bringing learning to life, igniting curiosity in every corner. Students are engaged, enthusiastic, and eager to share their knowledge, their growth, and their experiences with others. Every classroom o ers something unique, with no lesson ever the same as the next – a true

celebration of dynamic, inspired learning. As you would expect from a grammar school, our curriculum is ambitious and we make no secret about our drive to push and challenge our students to be the best they can. We believe strongly in focusing on the concept of marginal gains and as such we encourage our boys to go that little extra, to give 1% extra every day. We have very high expectations of our students, independent learning and revision is the norm. As well as providing exceptional support in the classroom, our sta run

intervention clubs at lunchtime and at the end of the College day, Monday to Friday.

Q How important is the pastoral side to life at St Anselm’s College?

A The pastoral side of the College is at the heart of everything we do. We take pride in truly knowing each student, prioritising their mental health and well-being, and o ering counselling and support when needed. As an anti-bullying, suicide-safe, and mental health-aware College, we ensure students feel supported and safe. Our Personal Development curriculum, enriched by guest speakers and external organisations, addresses the key challenges young people face today. With a strong culture of safeguarding, we are committed to creating a nurturing, inclusive environment for all.

Q Do you o er plenty outside of the classroom?

A We currently have over 63 enrichment clubs, which we track and monitor attendance and engagement to. Our extensive enrichment opportunities provide the perfect opportunity to develop skills such as e ective communication, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence. Our clubs range from board games to robotics, from Dungeons and Dragons, to Journalism society

from chess club to the debating society. Our students have the opportunity to travel to a range of exciting places both close to home and far abroad each year, to countries across Europe and as far as Canada and Japan. Our immersion to Sierra Leone each year is literally transformational. Watching our Y12 students teaching and discussing mathematics, science and English with the students, whilst at St Joseph’s School for the Hearing Impaired in Makeni, was a truly unbelievable experience for all. We are also renowned for our sporting achievements, last Saturday morning alone we had over 230 students involved in some form of sport.

Q What are you looking forward to most this new school year?

A I am excited to witness our students flourish and become the very best version of themselves. I look forward to seeing them conquer challenges with resilience and celebrating their successes alongside them. Watching them leave in Year 13, filled with confidence and excitement for the next chapter of their journey, is a true joy. Even more, I can’t wait for them to return, as inspiring role models, to motivate and uplift the next generation of Anselmians.

DAY in the LIFE

StonyhurstCollege is well renowned for its boarding provisions, so Absolutely asked one boarder about her dynamic time at the school

Being successful at school means something di erent to everyone, whether it’s related to academic achievements, opportunities beyond the classroom, or just simply knowing that the overall experience has allowed growth and full preparation for whatever is to follow.

At Stonyhurst College, an independent school nestled within 1,000 acres of Lancashire’s stunning Ribble Valley, Victoria is one of many Sixth Form pupils leaving this summer who can safely say her potential has been realised since joining as a full boarder from Spain in 2021. Fast forward three years and her time at the oldest continually active Jesuit school in the world has been marked by the rigorous academic curriculum of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, chairing the Pupil Council, completing her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, and being instrumental as Secretary General in organising the school’s Model United Nations (MUN). There

“WE HAVE ACCESS TO THE STONYHURST MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES, WITH OVER 100,000 ARTEFACTS AND HISTORICAL BOOKS”

can be no argument that the success of her educational journey so far spans multiple avenues in preparing her for the future, and she has shared some exclusive insight into her Stonyhurst boarding experience.

“My days at Stonyhurst are long and eventful, but I wouldn’t want it any other way,” she smiles. “I enjoy being able to have breakfast with my friends and other boarders, and then attend an assembly or hymn practice in the on-site St Peter’s Church before lessons start at 9am.

“I’m studying six subjects as part of my IB, ranging from History and German to Business Management and Environmental Systems, in addition to the core Theory

of Knowledge, during which we’ve been able to access the Stonyhurst Museum and Archives, which is an incredible resource with over 100,000 artefacts and historical books,” Victoria says.

“My mornings are usually split between lessons and free study periods, which I use to work on my IB coursework and revision for upcoming exams. Afternoons are usually just as busy, starting with Pupil Council meetings during the lunch break. As one of four Executive Chairs, I am responsible for the sub-committee for catering, which means I represent the pupil voice from all the College year groups to bring about change to enhance pupil life.

“The variety that Stonyhurst o ers really appealed to me when choosing schools,” she adds. “I love the history, traditions and community of Stonyhurst, especially with having everything all on a single campus, but I found there were opportunities which were not available elsewhere, such as MUN, where, along with the Pupil Council, I have gained a specific type of experience that I hope will serve me well for university and then as a career in International Relations.

“Most afternoons, I am in lessons until 5pm, and then I have some spare time before dinner where I am able to attend a subject clinic. The days are definitely busy, but I think as a boarder that all really helps when living away from home for long periods.”

Victoria’s narrative captures the essence of Stonyhurst College’s commitment to fostering independent, well-rounded young people. Her experiences, from rigorous academic challenges to enriching extracurricular activities, underscore the school’s unique approach to education – blending tradition with innovation, and discipline with freedom. As she and her classmates prepare to move on, they carry with them not only a portfolio of impressive accomplishments, but also a sense of belonging to a community that has shaped them profoundly. This is the true success of Stonyhurst: preparing its pupils not just for university, but for life. As Victoria steps into the future, she leaves behind a legacy that will inspire future generations at Stonyhurst.

Since contributing to this piece, Victoria has achieved remarkable results and is now pursuing her studies at Carnegie Mellon University in the US, her first choice, where she is specialising in International Relations.
