he iconic former home of the BBC in Wood Lane wouldn't have been considered at all a plausible location for luxury flats when it opened in 1960. But in 2016 it's a very different story. The site was developed for the Franco-British Exhibition of 1908 and then home to the Olympic Games of the same year (it's a little-known fact that the modern marathon distance of 26 miles was calculated from Windsor Castle to the White City Stadium) before the site was used for weapon manufacture during the second world war. It was also home to the Greyhound Racing Associating and other sporting organisations before the BBC brought the vast Television Centre to the 20 hectare patch; but it was the arrival of Westfield in 2008 that caterpaulted White City into London's great property race. And now this corner of W12 is looking

7 CHIS16_EDS_LETTER 2.indd 7

not only at an expansion to the already enormous Westfield and a new outpost of Imperial College, but also to an entire new community of residences, shops and businesses in the Television Centre buildings. There's even going to be a new Soho House with a rooftop pool. Wood Lane is not just a dusty thoroughfare any more, but a thoroughly stylish destination – and we discuss this further in this issue with Suzy Hoodless, the west London interiors guru who's designing the new apartments. But it's not all about White City in these pages – we're also focusing on the usual mix of local people and places. Here's hoping you enjoy the magazine. ◆

FIRE & ICE

A retelling of Jane Eyre in ballet is a highlight of this month’s programme at the Richmond Theatre. Absolutely has a preview Wo r d s y v e t t e m u r r e l l

he mad woman in the attic isn’t an obvious character for a ballet, but she certainly makes an interesting antidote to the sugar plum fairy. Marking the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Bronte's birth, Northern Ballet’s new production of Jane Eyre is set to come to the Richmond Theatre this month with its dark tale of secrets and lies. Staged in three acts, the story follows Jane's life from her dark and lonely childhood through to falling madly in love with her employer, the mysterious Mr. Rochester, a relationship which soon becomes far more complex than she could have anticipated. Despite everything that Jane goes through, the strength of her character does not falter. She is passionate, and her determination to embrace independence, take control of her own destiny and challenge those who seek to control her while fully embracing her femininity, has inspired renowned British choreographer Cathy Marston to create a highly original adaptation for the modern-day audience. Marston has a long running success of re-telling classic stories, and as she returns to the Northern Ballet for the second time, she is accompanied by critically acclaimed composer Philip Feeney who has compiled both new and existing score for this production. Feeney has been collaborating with the Northern Ballet for over 25 years and is best known for his compositions Cinderella and The

Hunchback of Notre Dame. In addition, theatrical designer Patrick Kinmouth has designed both the costumes and the set, with lighting by Alistair West. Jane Eyre will be Cathy Marston’s second full-length production for Northern Ballet, following her creation of the Dickens classic A Tale of Two Cities for the company in 2008. She was educated in Cambridge and at the Royal Ballet School and was Associate Artist at

15 CHIS_May16_NORTHERN BALLET.indd 15

the Royal Opera House from 2002 to 2006 and Director of the Bern Ballett in Switzerland from 2007 to 2013. Marston says: ‘Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre was a novel far ahead of its time and when I think of Jane Eyre I feel inspired by images of her passionate but impossible relationship with Mr Rochester, the fire and emotional destruction symbolised by Bertha Mason, the infamous woman in the attic, the contrasting icy moorland through which she seems to run from one chapter of her life to another, and of course her final reunion with Rochester. But these images only touch the surface of a character and a book that continue to provoke and move, generation after generation, re-read after re-read. After creating ballets inspired by Emily Brontë’s Cathy, Ibsen’s Mrs Alving and Nabokov’s Lolita, it seems both exciting and inevitable that Charlotte’s Jane is drawing me towards her.’ Richmond Theatre, with its distinctive 19th century features, will provide a suitably atmospheric setting for the London premiere of this exciting and contemporary ballet. This fascinating interpretation promises to be a captivating, must-see experience for all theatre goers and a perfect opportunity for those less well versed in ballet to be introduced to the genre with a familiar and accessible narrative.  Richmond Theatre, 31 May – 1 Jun 2016, Box Office 0844 871 7651 atgtickets.com/richmond northernballet.com

hen the Anderson reprising her role announcement as Agent Scully in The X-Files came that The X-Files was returning to our screens, the internet exploded with joy. Yet amid the fanatical reception from loyal followers of the travails of Agents Mulder and Scully, it can be easy to forget that for the actors who played those iconic characters, there’s something special about returning too. “I had the lingering sense that I had never really said goodbye to the character or to the story,” says Gillian star was difficult to shake, so much so Anderson, who played iconic FBI agent that when she was first asked to return Dana Scully on the small screen from to the role she said no, having “worked 1993 to 2002 as well as in the two movie really hard putting Dana Scully to sleep”. offshoots. With her partner, dedicated However, eventually she relented. “Well, but paranoid Agent Fox Mulder (David at first I thought to myself, ‘there’s no Duchovny), Scully investigated all way in hell I want to do this again’, but manner of paranormal activity and the everyone kept telling me it would be fun duo quickly became cult icons, while both and after a while I just said, ‘Oh, what Anderson and Duchovny went on to enjoy the heck! Let’s do it!” Also, the chance to huge career success. reunite with Duchovny was hard to pass For Anderson, the role that changed up. “After shooting the last film, we still her life and launched her as a global thought we would get to do a third,” she

says. “But then it never happened. So I thought it would be great to be able to work with David again and get some closure to what had been a major part of our lives.” Re-launched as a six-part ‘event’ series running in the UK on Channel 5, the show has been well-received by fans and critics alike for capturing the mystery and nostalgia of the original while updating its approach for the digital generation. What has also been noted is how fantastic both title stars look and how the screen still fizzles with their easy chemistry. Anderson in particular has barely aged and still radiates luminous beauty, with the trademark porcelain skin and reddish-gold hair that made her a poster girl for sci-fi fans the world over. Off-screen, one of Anderson’s more startling traits is her rather proper British accent. So accustomed are we to seeing her on TV speaking with an American drawl that it is easy to forget she has spent a lot of her time in the UK. Born in Chicago, she grew up in Crouch End until the age of 11 when her parents

moved back to America. Then, aged 24 and living in New York, she landed her breakout X-Files role. Anderson considers herself both British and American but for the last few years she has been based firmly in London where she lives centrally with her sons Oscar, nine, and Felix, seven. Her love of the capital is well known and she has said in the past that when she arrives back in town she likes to gaze out of taxi windows to “soak in the city I feel so grateful to live in”. In the intervening years since we last saw her as Scully, the 47-year-old

has been carving out a new identity in a variety of TV series including BBC2 dramas The Fall and Hannibal. Since turning 40, Anderson has experienced a resurgence. In particular she has been hailed for her role in The Fall, where DSI Stella Gibson is an icy but gifted detective who strides down the corridors of Belfast’s central police station. Brought in from the Met to solve a series of murders, she terrifies male colleagues with her confident sexuality and incisive brain. The show is shot in Belfast and a third series is expected this year. Anderson is known for playing strong, outspoken females, and her role in The Fall is no exception. “Stella is one of the most difficult but creatively satisfying characters I’ve ever played,” she says. “It’s been an honour to be in her company, even though it’s a complicated process for me to play her. It’s also easier to work when you don’t have to be on a plane all the time and you feel you’re not disrupting your life with your children as much.” In 2014, Anderson took a job even closer to home when she played Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams at the Young Vic, for which she won the Evening Standard

Theatre Award for Best Actress and a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. In June this year she will reprise the role at St Anne’s Warehouse, a theatre in New York, an undertaking the busy actress is both excited and exhausted by. “It’s going to be very demanding and draining but it’s such a great and important role,” she says. “I’m often drawn to playing complex and troubled women, and those are the characters that give you so much insight into human nature. Human beings are complicated creatures, aren’t we?” Indeed, Anderson herself is a complicated and mysterious personality. She is understandably guarded about her private life, having been married twice and having once revealed that she’d had relationships with women in the past. Also, during the original X-Files run there were rumours of both a love affair and a fallout between Anderson and Duchovny (though it’s difficult to know how much of that was imagined by fans desperate to see the great on-screen romance reflected in real life). Whatever their differences,

Anderson says she and Duchovny are “a lot closer” than before. “We’re both a little older and have a little more perspective that probably comes from being parents and going through different struggles in our lives,” she says. “Now we see that it’s easier to support each other and enjoy our friendship and the time we’ve been able to spend together.” For the record, Anderson is now very much single and enjoying her life in London. “I’m so lucky to have such great work,” she told The Telegraph last year. “I’ve got a fantastic life, I have a wonderful relationship with my kids and there’s nothing lacking.” The prospect of a new relationship, however, remains possible, with Anderson stating that although she

19 C&A_April16_GILLIAN ANDERSON.indd 19

thinks “it is better not to manipulate the situation” she is sure that she wants her next relationship “to be the one” – regardless of who that person is. “To me a relationship is about loving another human being,” she remarks philosophically, before going on to say that gender is, in her eyes, “irrelevant” when it comes to romantic relationships. With her triumphant return to the small screen in full swing, there’s every possibility that Anderson will be too busy, “either filming or on planes or putting my sons to bed,” to find her potential soulmate. In the meantime, though, she remains content to discover everything London has to offer.  l The X-Files airs on Channel 5

t’s no wonder that this quiet and leafy Thames-side suburb attracts families from all over west London. Not only does the area offer good schools, housing in quiet residential streets and good transport connections, but there are also watersports at Teddington Lock, lots of green space at Bushy Park and an excellent array of local shops and services too. Also, architecturally, Teddington is a stylish place. There are Victorian villas and detached Arts & Crafts style houses, as well as terraces in the Park

The High Street's Landmark Arts Centre was originally devised as an exact replica of the Notre Dame in Paris (though its builders ran out of money before it could become one) and 17th century Bushy House (pictured, left) is a local landmark. Notable Teddington residents have included actor Keira Knightley (who grew up here and went to Teddington School) and the flamboyant Sir Noel Coward, who is celebrated with a bust in Teddington Library. u

O

ur designer to watch at the moment is Lauren Barfoot, alumni of Kensington's fashion breeding ground, the Royal College of Art. Her collection of printed silk lounge- and resortwear under the label Holland Street (named for the street she grew up in, in Cambridge, not W8) absolutely oozes luxury. There are short, sassy kimonos and longer, elegant robes in various prints – our favourite being the Casati collection (kimono pictured above), inspired by the flamboyant Marchesa Luisa Casati, described by Barfoot as ‘a lavishly eccentric Italian heiress with a decadent passion for couture’. Because given that we can't all actually be the Marchesa, fabulous as she sounds, enveloping ourselves in the kind of silk she’d certainly have chosen can infuse our lives with a little of her sparkle. There’s also the Ikko collection, inspired by Japanese graphic designer Ikki Tanaka with contemporary floral designs, and Carmen Camellia, that fuses a British countryside feel with geometric flare and influences of Raoul Dufy, Paul Poiret and Collier Campbell. Everything comes beautifully packed and exquisitely finished, with stockists including Fenwick in Bond Street. Prices range from £189 to £275.u

THE SKIN ACADEMY The West London Dermatology Centre Wo r d s h a n n a h c l a r e

W

inter can be the harshest of seasons, especially for your skin, so now that those cold temperatures and rough winds have definitely softened and spring is well into its stride, it’s time for a rejuvenating facial. I’ve come to the Skin Academy at the Dermatology Centre in Chiswick, where treatments are based on the Skinova Cosmeceutical products range, formulated by dermatologists to provide the highest quality medical grade skincare combined with the latest in advanced anti-ageing and skin health technologies. I am in the capable hands of senior therapist Michelle, who devises a personalised set of treatments spread over 70 minutes. We begin with the Skinova Lavender Creamy Cleanser followed with Vita Soothe, a richly textured, hydrating serum. Then two skin peels: a CosMed Pro-G 70 peel to tackle the fine lines and wrinkles that have started to appear and a Skinova Blue Tidal Enzyme Peel to hydrate and give my skin a velvety texture. These are a little bit uncomfortable, but only briefly. To complete the refining is a facial massage followed by Fusion SLR laser rejuvenation treatment helping to increase production of collagen and plump up tired skin. To finish off I have a soothing pumpkin mask with ultra benefits, which smells divine, and completely restores my sense of calm. I leave feeling and looking really fresh faced and for all the polishing, only slightly pink in the cheeks. ◆

PUNCH DRUNK The Park Club is more than just a family club – it’s a world class boxing venue too

I

f all you know about boxing is based on the Rocky movies and two brutes slugging it out for a few rounds in the ring, you may be pleasantly surprised to discover that there are other sides to this sport. Beyond the bravado, showboating and fearsome faceoffs that we have all seen over the years, the humbler white-collar art in the ring has gained fans worldwide. So it comes as little surprise that The Park Club hosted the ever-popular third annual event recently, raising money for a good cause. “We are a family-centric venue and for us it was a simple decision to raise money for the NSPCC for their work with children,” said Tim Slater, the club's marketing director. “We’ve raised much-needed money for good causes over the last two years and each time we look to make it bigger and better than ever. This year, I think we managed to raise the bar yet again

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

Chiswick_April16_ParkClub.indd 44

Respect between the BOXERS was at an ALL-TIME HIGH as they FOUGHT for a GOOD CAUSE

and were able to delight the 1,250-strong crowd not just with bouts between new and old members of the club and staff, but we were able, for the first time ever, to have a professional fight with Chris Goodwin waving the flag for Great Britain versus Karim Aliliche of France.” As in the Six Nations rugby final which was held the same day, the home contender beat the visitor in what was a very evenly fought match that went down to the wire. Aside from the professional fight, spectators were treated to eight contests between amateurs from the club. Some, like former winner, Paul ‘Machine’ MacGregor made a return to the ring after a year’s absence and can hold his head high after narrowly been beaten on points by Paul ‘Smiling Assassin’ O’Keefe who was 15 years his junior. Meanwhile Mark ‘Fitz of Fury’ Fitzgerald competed against The Hogarth Health Club’s very own Adam ‘Short Notice’ Jones who had only been practicing a matter of two weeks for the event as the tabled

competitor had to withdrawn due to injury. Respect between all boxers was at an all time high as they fought with all their hearts for something that mattered more to them than their own pride – a good cause. 13 times WBO Champion and exprofessional boxer-turned Sky pundit, Johnny Nelson, who helped commentate throughout the bouts said: “This is my third time here, and each time it’s got bigger and better and more organised. These guys here have done such a spot on job, that’s why world title contenders like WBA lightweight champion Anthony Crolla and three-time world title challenger George Groves are here supporting the event.” Also attending the event were bxoing legends Spencer Oliver and Glenn Mcrory alongside Eastenders actor Jake Wood. Johnny added: “You can’t get any better than this. There’s a great crowd, it’s a great night out.” Reflecting upon the professional fight Nelson added: “I was surprised to see the professional fight take place actually, but now it’s done it’ll be the first of many.”

Sports memorabilia including GLOVES & TRUNKS belonging to MIKE TYSON went under the HAMMER When commenting about the ladies boxing between Sharon ‘the Deadly’ Rose and Emma ‘Tequila Slammer’ Lesbirel, he added “Sharon, I can say, is the most developed fighter of the night. I saw her fight here two years ago and I can tell the difference, making the transition from being a raw novice to serious amateur.” Local businesses, notably Thorgills, Porsche Centre West London, West Three Colour printers, Starsys, Sizebreed, ARP Exec and The Hogarth Health Club all helped contribute to the evening, with Sky having their very own fighter competing on the night. For those who were interested in

45 Chiswick_April16_ParkClub.indd 45

walking away with something collectable there was a silent auction where rare signed art and sports memorabilia including gloves and trunks of Mike Tyson went under the hammer. During the evening David Haye texted in and donated a one-to-one boxing session with himself in his own Hayemaker gym – available to the highest bidder. u

POTTED CRAB

The delicate flavour of crab loves zesty fizz and where better to look nowadays than our excellent home-grown wines? oussaka isn’t just about lamb, of course, but aubergines, tomatoes, creamy sauce and cheese too. RHUBARB & ALMOND TART

he sharpness of rhubarb loves an unctuous sticky wine and Canada is a master at this, more specifically at making ice wine, where the water of the grapes (Vidal is the grape of choice here) freezes inside the berry on the vine leaving the grape’s contents proportionally high in sugar. Sweet and glossy with luscious mango and mandarin flavours, it a heavenly match here.

his must have been what went through the minds of the team behind Mustard. British cooking has had its renaissance. Now, like so many culinary trends before it, it’s crying out for a return to the high street. Mustard is taking it there, with an affordable, unfussy approach that’s driven by ingredients. At the end of the day, we all come back to food looking for the same feeling: comfort. Eliciting that emotion has always been a key strength of Britain’s chefs. It’s a rare and clever thing, however, to marry it with originality and a light touch. Chef Jason

Wild has learnt to balance those three elements perfectly. Our meal centred on seasonal dishes and good produce. To start with, I chose the goat’s curd salad, my friend opting for the gin-soaked salmon. The salad was a little hard to work out at first, dandelion leaves too unwieldy to be picked up with a fork. Eventually, I realised it was an invitation to get hands-on; I ended up dragging and dipping them around the plate. Sweet and soft, with chicory-like bitterness and some texture from toasted hazelnuts, it was a fun combination that worked well. The promised gin for the salmon dish turned out to be a red herring, juniper hiding

51 CHIS_May16_Food_Review.indd 51

somewhere in the background, although the caraway-heavy rye bread delivered enough of a punch. Both dishes set the tone for what would follow - a relaxed and brasserie-like affair, with a focus on ingredients. The main courses were where Mustard’s ethos really shone. A minute steak was perfectly cooked, served with properly seasoned, crispy chips. The braised beef cheek presented in a small, cast-iron casserole dish - was delicious, dark and rich. The accompaniments were exceptional. The mashed potato was buttery and smooth. The root vegetables, with a light, dill-flavoured dressing, were sublime. Sometimes, a combination of flavours deliver a feeling of warmth that goes beyond the food itself. To conjure that magic in a simple side dish is a real skill. For dessert, we chose the rhubarb crumble. Its sharpness offset by a wellmade custard, it summarized what makes Mustard such a good choice for a casual meal. For many of us, the flavours will be familiar. What is less familiar is the quality of the cooking. It’s a taste of home with a master’s touch. 

hile Hollywood basks in all the fame and glamour of its motion picture heritage, Downtown LA is slowly but surely poised to snatch the limelight as it goes through a renaissance. Of the many districts that make up the Downtown area, the Historic Row played a significant role in the early 1900s, when Broadway was a buzzing mecca for entertainment. Post WWII, new opportunities lured businesses and residents into the suburban sprawl around West Hollywood, leaving this corner of Downtown and surrounding enclaves to succumb to urban decay. But that’s about to change, as maverick entrepreneurs and a community of local artists and denizens breath new life into its empty streets and spaces. Already, hip Angelenos and visitors are gravitating towards the offbeat Historic and Arts districts, invigorated by a burgeoning cultural scene, revival of architectural gems, luxury property development, and a spate of trendy eateries and retail hotspots. The hotel played host to numerous VIPs, most notably The Beatles, during their first US tour back in 1964, and also featured in countless films and TV series. Back in the 70s and 80s, artists who could no longer afford rising rents in Venice Beach and Hollywood moved into an enclave close to the Los Angeles River, where abandoned warehouses, factories and derelict rail depots provided shelter and studio-cumgallery space. This bold move and the growing underground arts community that followed led to the area being officially designated in the mid-90s as the Arts District. Since then, building façades have

Its gritty backdrop and randomness are what give the place its eclectic edge. There are big plans for the Arts District, and deals are being inked to develop commercial projects and hotels, including a Soho House members’ club, Soho Warehouse. Back at the Historic District, every second Thursday of each month, art enthusiasts descend upon Spring and Main streets, between 2nd and 9th streets to take part in the Downtown Art Walk (downtownartwalk.org), a free event that celebrates local artists and businesses. Those who wish to explore public art in more detail join the Historic Core Mural Tour, a guided walk around the district’s back-doubles. DESIGN Discovering unique furniture from The Workshop by Minale + Mann Wo r d s e v e h e r b e r t

W

e are catching up with London architect and designer Sebastian Mann from maverick design agency Minale + Mann, to discuss his latest venture – The Workshop by Minale + Mann. The Workshop is a London-born Furniture Design Collective, and is the brainchild of architect Sebastian Mann, co-founder and Managing Director of design agency Minale + Mann. Offering both bespoke furniture to fit any residential or commercial space and exclusive one off Collection pieces, all products from The Workshop acknowledge Mann’s background in architecture, and his team’s obsession with specialist fabrication techniques. Creating an emphasis on shape, texture and finishes makes up the refined industrial signature style.

We are SPECIALIST FURNITURE, product & industrial DESIGNERS who create inspired INTERIOR PRODUCTS

What would you say is the design inspiration for the workshop? Inspiration comes from a variety of places such as architecture form, structure and the materials we use. Of all your pieces, which is your favourite and why? Although it is hard to pick a particular piece, I am particularly proud of the cantilevered Well Hung Table we have as part of our collection pieces. It’s made with American walnut and pre-aged copper, and is supported by a sleeve bracket detail connected to the wall, resting on a single angular leg at one end.

In a nutshell, can you describe the workshop? We are specialist furniture, product and industrial designers, and carpenters who create inspired interior products, from bespoke furniture to one-off design pieces. We design in collaboration with Minale + Mann from our central

NH_April16_The Workshop.indd 66

What comes first the materials or the design idea? I am extremely driven by materials and textures and the contrast they can provide against any backdrop. Recently we have been experimenting with patinated metal finishes for our furniture and the varying textures you can get from the use of copper and zinc.

How did the workshop come about? With over 12 years’ experience crafting tailor-made furniture design products alongside my design agency Minale + Mann, we decided to branch out in 2013 to bring our furniture design expertise to a wider audience.

Do you favour particular materials, fads or fashions when it comes to design for the workshop? Each concept that passes through the workshop is developed from a single idea, steering away from fashions and trends. We strive to

What projects are The Workshop working on right now? It’s an exciting time for the workshop at the moment as we are getting ready to showcase our Well Hung collection at Clerkenwell Design Week in May. We will showcase one-off contemporary designed furniture such as the Well Hung Table and our modern twist to a classic piece of furniture – The Bureau. With Bespoke we are in the process of designing a range of Bespoke products that will offer affordable one-off designs to a wider audience. ◆

go against the grain, and focus more on the purity of the design itself. What inspires you to think of new designs? London’s backdrop is forever inspiring to me. The hardcore backdrop of the city – from Battersea Power station to more contemporary architecture such as the Lloyds building – never fails to impress and inspire me. What continues to facilitate your growth for two creative brands? I think there is just still so much to do! With the launch of the workshop we are now able to provide and focus our skills and aesthetics for a wider audience. I want to continue providing this offering far and wide.

I

t still seems incredible that the iconic west London home of the BBC is being turned into flats. When staff moved out of Television Centre in 2013, many of the household names reared on the BBC lamented the end of an era. Danny Baker and Sir Michael Parkinson were particularly vocal in their objections, as was Brian Blessed, who said: ‘I think it's frightful that it's closing. It breaks my heart. For God's sake – they've made a mistake. It's wrong.’ But the unstoppable power of west London’s land value has spoken and the first apartments in the former ‘television factory’ go on sale this month (due for completion in 2018). The development isn’t exclusively residential, of course – in addition to almost 1,000 new homes, plans include TV studios (BBC Worldwide is staying) as well as office space, retail and a large new outpost of Soho House with a hotel, members’ club and rooftop swimming pool. But the new phase of flats is eminently stylish, partly thanks to designer Suzy Hoodless, who is responsible for the look and feel of the residences.

SUZY HOODLESS: I am a local resident; we have a fantastic local community here and I am active in supporting the growth and improvement of the area. My memories of the BBC, as it was, go back to early childhood, so it was an honour to be invited to dress the wonderful interiors of the show apartment. Much of our work is in west London and I understand the area, the culture and complexities of creating design for fast- paced lives. My clients want design that works it has to look good but it has to work. I am passionate about good design and ergonomics, and I have a deep sense of functionality and provenance. with the top designers, manufacturers and suppliers. A project can only be outstanding if you have a client that wants it to be and architecture that supports it. This project has that in spades. ABS: What was your vision and why do you think you were successful? SH: My vision was and is to take the best of what is already there and to re work it for today. I want interiors to have longevity. The BBC heritage is one of a kind, totally unique to the site and to be celebrated. However, this isn’t about living in a TV studio, a pastiche of times gone past. The site still has working TV studios but it’s now also home to a new generation and generations to come. Most importantly the spaces have to be ergonomic, they have to work and be functional, they have to

NOT EVERY PIECE has to have an IMPORTANT PROVENANCE but it’s important to PICK THE BEST OF DESIGN look great, be modern and simple. We have a strong design aesthetic which will appeal to those that are design conscious but it will also appeal to those that aren’t, as, quite simply, it works. ABS: Can you describe the look and feel of your work for TVC? SH: The look is simple modern design. 1950s Scandinavian, the best of European contemporary design. We have worked with a few strong manufacturers and suppliers that we believe are important and relevant partners with a symbiotic sensibility. Another Country, contemporary craft furniture made in the UK and Europe, has

a modernity that relates so well to today’s living, plus it’s classic and will stand the test of time. Twentytwentyone provided us with contemporary European furniture, showcasing design by Barber Osgerby and Jasper Morrison as well as Eames and we worked with Van der Hurd on bespoke wall-hangings and rugs, based on historical images of the site. Some are very literal interpretations and some are abstract. ABS: And your personal style - what’s your favourite building in the world? And your favourite interior? SH: My personal style is about collating the best of design from different periods. I like

71 Chis_May16_Suzy Hoodless.indd 71

to mix and to create modern interiors that are both comfortable and confident. I love the Reunification Palace in Ho Chi Minh City, 1960’s architecture and interiors that have remained untouched since 1975. ABS: As a west Londoner did you feel a special affiliation to Television Centre? How do you feel about its transformation? SH: Yes, I absolutely feel an affiliation with the Television Centre. I was born in west London and have lived here all my live. My earliest memories are of Blue Peter, so I have great affection and nostalgia. ◆

SHELF LIFE A small company with a big reach, Chiswick's Wyndham Design is London’s go-to name for bespoke furniture. Absolutely meets its founder, Richard Thomas Wo r d s p e a r l b oy d

F

or Richard Thomas, it’s all about personal service. Sure, his company offers highly skilled and entirely comprehensive bespoke furniture and interiors and will create anything you want, from fitted storage to bold statement pieces. And of course they work with luxurious materials and to exacting standards with a full consultation service. But what makes Wyndham Design different is Thomas’ total dedication to the personal element of each project. Working closely with each customer to achieve exactly what's right for them is Wyndham’s trademark. As Thomas explains: ‘We are big enough to handle large scale projects but small enough to a complete understanding of everything that leaves our workshops.’ Having studied 3D design at university, it was a passion for form and combining beautiful materials that led Thomas to develop exquisite furniture. Noticing a gap in the market, he decided to utilise his natural aptitude and enthusiasm for design to help enable people realise their unique furniture designs. He says: ‘All items are custom made to order, so each piece is unique. Having the freedom to formulate a new initial idea from a client’s brief and then to see it realised is amazing.’ Taking inspiration from classic 20th century designs, Wyndham prides itself on timeless pieces and an extremely diverse portfolio of furniture types and materials. Fluent in working with a range of materials

and combinations including wood, metal, glass and fabrics, the furniture created is made by marrying traditional techniques and the very latest technology. The company is also well known for its designer storage solutions and walk-in wardrobes, signature items which are designed to fit any space and interior design. However, they have the vision and ability to create anything. The impressive piece pictured on the right, for instance, is one of Thomas’ particular personal favourites. A large centrepiece item for a house which has had a floor removed, creating a mezzanine area, it was designed to make the most of the fabulous high ceilings. ‘I just love the bold statement created by this piece and the scale of it, the black lacquer finish and gold detailing is a beautiful example,’ enthuses Thomas. It is clear that Wyndham Design is born out of a love for beautiful things, exquisite detail, fine craftsmanship and a dedication to delivering stunning designs. Citing his father and uncle as inspirations for their hard work and determination, Thomas understands that working with highly skilled craftspeople and surrounding himself with brilliant individuals is key to his vision. ‘I would like to be known as one of the best bespoke furniture services in the UK, or even the world,’ he says, aiming high. And he’s well on the way to achieving his aim, it appears. 

KIDS & EDUCATION / SCHOOL TALK

The play’s the thing Traditionally viewed as a ‘soft’ subject, drama can have all sorts of benefits for children Wo r d s A M a n d a C o n s ta n c e

W

hat are the benefits of drama in education? With its place on the curriculum threatened by the EBACC and changes to GCSEs and A-Levels, does drama matter? “It’s is a way for children to still be children,” says Maharati, a drama teacher, “especially today where there is so much expectation and pressure to achieve… For children to have a safe space to play and try stuff out is invaluable.” Pippa Aston-Browne and Maharati run Applause for Children, a drama holiday club for children aged 4-11. Both have a background in the performing arts and set up Applause! in 2009. They now run drama camps at Lion House School in Putney and in St Helen’s Church Hall in North Kensington. During term time Pippa is a full-time drama teacher and Maharati runs Applause for Schools, which trains and mentors drama teachers for state and private schools, including Maple Walk, Mulberry House and Faraday School. A mother of two girls who have attended the Kensington drama camp says: “My kids are never happier than after a day with their heroines Maharati and Pippa. They still quote and sing from all their past performances.” Maharati says that all children, whether shy or boisterous, gain confidence through drama. “You might have a class clown or a diva looking for attention, but they will have to share the limelight and learn to work in an ensemble – and at the other end of the spectrum you get kids who can barely speak to an adult but who learn how to

IT MIGHT look like playing BUT IT’S WITHIN strict PARAMETERS become more confident through drama.” Children are also treated as individuals at a drama club like Applause!, which can work wonders for even those labeled ‘difficult’. “Kids with behavioural problems just don’t have them in drama,” says Maharati. “They are not stuck behind a desk and they are listened to.” The discipline of the drama class is not the static structured regime of school, which young boys, in particular, can struggle with. “Drama lets you run around and blow off steam.” When the children arrive every morning, the teacher runs through a series of mental and physical exercises to warm them up. It’s very focused work, says Maharati. “It might look like playing but it’s within strict parameters,” she says. The clubs are run on a weekly basis, Monday to Friday, and each week

79 CHIS_Mayl16_Education.indd 79

culminates in a performance. There are no set scripts, allowing the teacher to adapt roles to the ability or needs of each child. “It’s a totally different way of learning,” says Maharati. “Children have to think on their feet – if a child is struggling with a line I can change it – and if they are West End material and want to do a monologue, there’s space for that, too. To get a play to start on Monday and finish by Friday requires a lot of discipline,” says Maharati, a fact often underappreciated by observers. Phil King, head of drama at Bedales, agrees, and says participating in ensemble productions at school is good preparation for the working world. “A theatre production is a management project; management projects in the workplace require bringing people together quickly and enthusiastically, and the teamwork and leadership engendered in drama work are suited to this.” King says the confidence a child gains through drama can spill over into their other academic work. “I can think of many students about whom teachers in other subjects have expressed concerns that they don’t contribute in class, who then learn through drama that they can say their piece.” Maharati remembers Fiona, a shy girl from Mulberry House. “On her first day, she was a little out of her depth and a bit emotional,” says Maharati. “We took every opportunity to praise her, to allow her to speak up. Every day I gave her a bit more to say; in the end she was loud and confident. Her mother was in tears and she was so proud of herself. I know that that experience will stay with her.”  applauseforchildren.com

PROPERTY / OUTDOORS NIGEL LEWIS

GARDEN PARTY WHY LONDON’S GETTING GREENER

L

ondon’s always been verdant but a Boris initiative is laying even more of the Capital to grass through the planning process. And anyone buying a newbuild apartment will notice this garden shift, says Nigel Lewis. The Capital’s long commitment to open spaces and greenery is there to see on Google maps. Parks, garden squares, allotments and hundreds of thousands of back gardens bear witness to our love of grass, shrubs and trees. And it’s not a legacy that every city has. “If you go to New York then they’ve got Central Park but outside that it’s a concrete jungle,” says Simon Kitchin of garden design firm Randle Siddeley. “The nice thing about London is that they are always trying to avoid that at every possible opportunity.” And there’s a reason why. Boris’s most famous legacy may be his bikes, but it’s his planning advice that might outlive him and be appreciated more by Londoners. In it he recently set out a vision for neighbourhoods that will ‘create places people can live their whole lives’. But the practical output is that developers have been increasingly focussed on outdoor spaces. Developers have been pushed to provide more green public and communal spaces for residents. And it’s rapidly

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

CHIS_May16_Garden_1pp.indd 104

turning from planning theory into practice. And award-winning landscape designer Sam Ovens, who is designing the Cloudy Bay garden at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, is getting involved. “The garden I’m designing for the Cloudy Bay winery at Chelsea Flower Show this spring focuses on the theme of escapism,” he says. “It explores the idea of creating a secluded retreat in which to escape, a serene space where one can ‘sail away’ from the pressures and demands of life. “Developers are increasingly recognising the need to create these spaces in their schemes, whether its private gardens, terraces or shared outdoor landscapes.” This approach isn’t just for the big multiapartment developments, though, and even owners of multi-million pound properties want to get in on the gardening action, according to Simon Kitchin. “We recently did a project in Chelsea - Cheyne Terrace - where each of the

A Boris initiative is laying even more of the capital to grass through the planning process gardens has its own private vertical garden or ‘green wall’ up the side of the terraces,” he says. “When we were looking at the plant mixes one of the things that the developer was really keen on where that the residents should be able to interact with the gardens so we created a herb garden on the green walls.” Another development taking gardens seriously is Lillie Square, being built by Earls Court. Its Director of Development and Sales, Mike Hood says he thinks the spaces in between buildings are just as important as the buildings themselves. “Lillie Square draws on its west London garden square heritage and as one of the most desirable features for homes in the capital, we’ve built this into its very heart,” he says. But it was not always this way. If you look at the developments built during the 70s, 80s and 90s everyone wanted to ensure their flat came with a parking space, not a garden. And if you want to see the Boris vision writ particularly large then pay a visit to Berkeley Homes’ huge Chiswick Gate development. “The emphasis on outside space in new residential development is, in the first instance, being driven by planning requirements, which at Berkeley Homes we seek to exceed on every new scheme we build to provide the perfect living environment." u

The Naked Chef saw Oliver rustling something up in the kitchen of this trendy three bedroom home. Oliver, who’s now equally famous for campaigning to introduce a sugar tax and tackle childhood obesity, admitted wife Jools “didn’t exist” in series one. The father-offour, then 22, said the former model was kept away in the bedroom as TV execs wanted to suggest he was single. His original pad, in Clerkenwell, is on the market for £2.75m and it’s still got the spiral staircase although the kitchen has been refurbished since appearing in the 1999 cookery show. There’s a gym on the ground floor, as well as a garage, storage room, built-in study and utility room. The master bedroom boasts a dressing room and en-suite. LIVE IN A FORMER HARRODS STORE

arrods was once famous for selling any animal its customers desired. Back in its glory days, when customers ordered furniture that couldn’t fit into the shop, they were stored in its depository in Barnes. The building also had personal storage space for clients needing somewhere to keep their belongings while they were abroad. After several decades of neglect, the Grade II listed building was converted into more than 200 flats known as Harrods Village, so even if you don’t shop at the store, you can now live in its former warehouse. aving entered the world at Queen Mary’s Hospital Roehampton, my family decamped to Wimbledon, where I spent most of my childhood, attending Rutlish Grammar, the same school where John Major was educated. I was fortunate to have grown up in this leafy part of London, and from an early age really appreciated being surrounded by so many beautiful homes. Reaching the grand old age of 17, I was unsure at the time of what sort of career I wanted to pursue. But with a little family encouragement, and my natural interest in bricks and mortar, I joined a small independent estate agency run by David Cooke, the former England rugby player. I loved working in the property industry from the start and enjoyed all the different aspects. You really have to like meeting new people, and this is something we do virtually every day. After a very happy start in Wimbledon, I moved jobs to increase my

The natural beauty of Richmond Park and the river never cease to amaze me knowledge of the London property market, which included stints in Richmond, Belgravia and Clapham. Then in 2007 I applied for the position of manager at Featherstone Leigh, who were just about to open a branch in Twickenham. I knew about the company, having always been an admirer of their style and presence, so was delighted when they took me on. After building up the branch, I was offered my dream position in our flagship office in Richmond, where I have happily remained ever since. I am blessed to be working in such a wonderful place. The natural beauty of Richmond Park and the river never cease to amaze me. Many of our clients move here and stay for the rest

of their lives, putting down roots, having families, upsizing and then, after the children have flown the nest, downsizing. It is always very satisfying when they come back to us to discuss their next move. I am married, with two teenage children and a wife who teaches in a special needs school. We are a pretty busy household so understand the needs of other families in the area. I still find time for my big sporting passionrugby. I’m an avid supporter of Harlequins, and of course, England, who were a joy to watch in this year’s Six Nations. Living and working so close to the heart of English rugby, it’s hard not to get addicted. I also caught the football bug quite early on, playing for the school team. I love to see world class games whenever possible, and actually got to Barcelona this year. My dream home would be one of the new apartments at The Star and Garter, atop Richmond Hill. We are privileged to be selling this development, so of course I am well acquainted with the building, and those famous views. ◆

PROPERTY / MARKET UPDATE

ANDREW NUNN WE ENVISAGE A RELATIVELY STABLE CHISWICK MARKET THIS YEAR WITH LOW TRANSACTIONAL VOLUME, 2-4% UPLIFT IN PRICES AND A MOVE AWAY FROM OVERSEAS AND CASH BUYERS TO A MORE DOMESTIC, MORTGAGE DEPENDANT BUYER PROFILE.

T

he shift in buyer profile and a general calming of buyer excitement means that both the initial marketing of a property and then the transactional length of time is likely to increase considerably. The days of property going under offer over a weekend have long gone as has the idea of exchanging contracts within days. The more sedate market conditions enable local buyers to move within their area without being continually ‘outbid’ by non local cash rich buyers with nothing to sell. “We are advising clients that accurate pricing is imperative for a successful sale and also it may take 4-6 weeks to find the ideal buyer,” suggests Andrew Nunn. “Buyers are definitely cherry picking

ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES

CHIS_May16_Property_1NDREW_NUNN.indd 138

‘best in class’ and will not compromise at all on a property that does not quite work. This is understandable given the high costs of moving countered with anticipated low capital growth – when stamp duty, selling fees, legal fees, finance fees amount to possibly 12-14% of the purchase price and expected capital growth is at 2-4% it is not surprising that buyers are fairly cautious in their approach. That said, property that is correctly priced, is well located and offers

It is becoming increasingly hard to predict short and medium term price behaviour potential is still attracting multiple offers and selling very well.” So given the above and with the benefit of 25 years of wisdom, it is once again frustrating that many of our competitors are going out in January and February looking to bolster the number of properties on their register by overpricing and simply adding a further 10% to the prices that were not achieved at the end of 2015. This happens to be common practice every year as the management of large organisations send their January message down the hierarchy: “take on as many properties as you can at whatever price irrespective of market conditions or what may be best for your client.” It is becoming increasingly hard to predict short and medium term price behaviour as the London property market is exposed to money from all over the world. Theoretically we should be entering a period of stability and low capital growth as the typical 6-7 year cycle has reached the end of its upslope, however should there be an unexpected outflow of capital from another country into London property then suddenly the market can defy logic. That said, and all things being equal – which they rarely are – we do envisage a steady 2016 in Chiswick. u
