What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) removes excess skin around the eyes. On the upper eyelid this can cause a ‘hooded’ appearance. Surgery tightens the supportive structures which naturally lose elasticity with age to achieve a more alert and youthful appearance. It is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures.
Why is it so popular?
• The results are permanent
• The results are subtle and scars can be hidden in the folds of the eye
• It can boost self confidence as it is very difficult to disguise sagging, protruding fat pads, folds and deep lines

here is still time to catch award-winning abstractexpressionist painter Anthony Daley’s exceptional paintings at Varvara Roza Galleries in St James this month. Daley is a man whose entire career has been defined by the pursuit of beauty, producing works of phosphorescent transcendence that tip a nod the painterly genius of the Old Masters while, simultaneously, communicating something vital and contemporary. Since graduation from the Chelsea College of Arts in the early 80s, the artist has become increasingly celebrated for his captivating ability to seamlessly blend vibrant colours in an explosive and overwhelming fugue, presenting otherworldly meditations that provide a unique portal to the infinite.
“Irreality” is Daley’s first London exhibition since the hugely successful show “Son of Rubens” at Dulwich Picture Gallery The title refers to that state of being best described as daydreaming or reverie – an abstract inner landscape given to the construction of ideas that have little to do with corporeal reality. It’s a space the artist has loved to inhabit since his early childhood in Jamaica, being fascinated by mathematics and cosmology from a very early age, and seeing beauty in everything around him – from a Newtonian equation, to the phenomenology of a falling leaf. As such, he draws his inspiration from a diverse array of sources, ranging from classical literature, quantum physics, poetry and the serene beauty of natural phenomena, and feeds all of these influences into works that evoke the sublime, where mesmeric fields of colour are punctuated with iridescent flashes of light.
Irreality by Anthony Daley is at Varvara Roza Galleries, 8 Duke Street until 5 December

“We're in Victorian London, down a dimly lit alleyway, and into Charles Dickens's house”
The Great Christmas Feast is an immersive retelling of A Christmas Carol, with dinner
t's said that Christmas wouldn't be Christmas as we know it without Scrooge, Marley and Tiny Tim. Dickens' own live readings of A Christmas Carol were hugely popular in late 19th century London, and now they have been revived in an unlikely, tardis-like space in west London. The Great Christmas Feast is an evening of food, drink, storytelling and music and it's a fabulous festive spectacular. It's a strange location, but a queue of people in Victorian dress outside an unmarked door near West Kensington tube tells us we've come to the right place. Inside, we're in Victorian London, down a dimly lit alleyway, through a Christmas market and then into Charles Dickens's house, except it's a large round room full of tables set for dinner, with lots of hanging lanterns and a magical vibe. Drinks are served immediately and Dickens himself (Alex Phelps) soon appears to welcome us. It's Christmas Eve and Scrooge is about to be visited by Marley's ghost; Phelps performs the story alone, shifting between characters in a hugely energetic performance accompanied by excellent ambulant musicians (violins, cello, drum). It's a beautiful production with atmospheric lighting, lots of humour and clever ghostly e ects And in between acts, we are served dinner in an extraordinay feat of organisation: a fleet of servers circle the room delivering starters of ham hock terrine (it's a set menu, with vegetarian options and a stringent approach to allergies). The action pauses while we eat, and three courses fit in well with the story's structure: Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet To Come. Main
courses of confit duck come with mulled cabbage and garlic roast potatoes, and a Twelfth Night cake is revealed to be a delicious frangipane tart, served with Christmas pudding ice cream. The Lost Estate is an original and ambitious group with a variety of immersive shows like this, fusing music, theatre, dance and hospitality. We look forward to the next production.

A new exhibition shows the world’s largest collection of Marilyn Monroe ephemera. Absolutely takes a tour
Marilyn – The Exhibition o ers a rare and unprecedented glimpse into the private world of Marilyn Monroe. From love letters, satin robes and timeless outfits to vintage shoes, make-up and accessories, this meticulously curated collection of 250 extraordinary objects from the exclusive private collection of Ted Stampfer, the world's largest collector of Marilyn Monroe’s historical objects of this kind, unveils Marilyn as never before.
The exhibition is a fresh and unparalleled opportunity to discover the real story of pop culture’s most pioneering figure. From her beginnings as Norma Jeane Baker, transformation into the legendary Marilyn, blazing path to notoriety, extraordinary career and tragic untimely death.
Exhibition highlights include fascinating artefacts from her ground-breaking career including the creation of her own film production company, memorabilia from her film production ventures in London in 1956 and her historic meeting with Queen Elizabeth II. Also on display are the make-up and beauty accessories she used to craft her distinctive image and outfits made famous by her films and photoshoots. Handwritten notes, childhood drawings, letters, family photographs, books, scripts and props from her films are also among the treasures in the exhibition.
Collector and curator Ted Stampfer says: “Much has been written and discussed about Marilyn over the decades but no one can say with absolute certainty what the truth is. What we can consider, in addition to her film and photographic legacy, are her personal material possessions. In 1962, after her death, her items were stored and preserved, almost like they were in a time capsule, for nearly four decades. It’s wonderful to be able to share these unique pieces which can give us a real insight into her life, allowing us today to get closer to the real Marilyn Monroe and her true identity.”
Marilyn's influence on film, music, fashion, design, art and culture is as strong as ever today. Her unique style has been adopted and reinterpreted by countless celebrities over the decades from Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Angelina Jolie to Winnie Harlow, Kim Kardashian and more. A worldwide role model, she remains one of the most influential and famous personalities of the 20th century.

A new exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery champions Black photography
As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic is a compelling exhibition of photographs from African Diasporic culture selected from the Wedge Collection. Organised by Aperture and curated by Elliott Ramsey, the exhibition showcases work by Black artists from Canada, United States, Great Britain, The Caribbean, and the African Continent. The exhibition celebrates works from the Wedge Collection, Canada’s largest privately-
owned collection committed to championing Black artists, established by Dr Kenneth Montague in 1997. Explored through the concepts of community, identity, and power, viewers are invited to recognize the complexity – the strength, beauty, vulnerability, and diversity – of Black life. Works by established names such as Horace Ové, James Barnor and Carrie Mae Weems will be on display, as well as those of emerging talents such as Texas Isaiah and Arielle Bobb-Willis.
The title As We Rise is borrowed from a phrase that Dr Montague’s father would

often invoke: “Lifting as we rise.” The adage suggests the importance of both individual and communal fortification; of empowering your community while striving for personal success. As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic embraces this sensibility and is the reason why the many works featured in the exhibition are gathered into the thematic sections of Community, Identity, and Power. In their depiction of an expansive sense of the familial and the familiar, they share a common thread. Black subjects are depicted by Black photographers; their gaze is mutual and consensual. But the imagery is far from uniform. Instead, it is as varied, surprising, and idiosyncratic as a family album.
The exhibition's curator, Elliott Ramsey, said: “From the 1930s’ Harlem Renaissance, through post-colonial Bamako, to contemporary Toronto, As We Rise celebrates the polyphony of Black life — and the nuanced approaches of Black photographers in representing these scenes of love, leisure, and resistance.” Dr Kenneth Montague, of the Wedge Collection added: “As We Rise is a celebration of global Black culture through time, with images that reflect legacies of community, identity and power.”

“It has amazed over 11 million spectators, in 22 countries, on four continents”
Cirque du Soleil’s latest production is a stunning mix of spectacle and fantasy
orteo, one of Cirque du Soelil’s most enchanting productions, is set to open at London’s famed Royal Albert Hall in January 2025. A wholly unique production with a stage that splits the venue into two halves, the show first premiered in Montreal in April 2005, and has since amazed over 11 million spectators, in 22 countries, on four continents. Corteo will be presented at the Royal Albert Hall from 9th January. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.
The clown’s dreamlike imagination pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

In a Cirque du Soleil first, the stage is central in the arena and divides the venue into two, with each half of the audience facing the other half, giving a unique perspective not only of the show, but also a performer’s eye view of the audience. Corteo is also the heaviest show that Cirque du Soleil has brought to the Royal Albert Hall, suspending a massive 67

Why turkey dinner is synonymous with Christmas – and why Copas will ensure the perfect meal
For many families across the UK, Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without a turkey dinner.
The scent of a beautifully roasted bird, the gathering of loved ones, and the joy of sharing a meal together have become integral to the holiday season.
From its flavour to its iconic place on the festive table, turkey is more than just a meal: it’s a symbol of Christmas itself.
Although it wasn’t always the British holiday staple, by the Victorian era, turkey
had become a Christmas favourite, in part thanks to Charles Dickens choosing it as a symbol of Scrooge’s redemption in A Christmas Carol. By then, it had become a treat associated with the best of what Christmas had to o er: a feast that was generous, delicious, and special. Today, turkey is still the centrepiece of holiday celebrations. But what is it that makes turkey such a timeless choice? Perhaps it’s the festive scale of it – perfect for carving and sharing
among family and friends. Turkey’s mild yet rich flavour complements the season’s accompaniments, from roasted vegetables to cranberry sauce, bread sauce and stu ng, bringing together the best flavours of winter.
Beyond taste and tradition, the modern appeal of turkey also lies in its versatility and high nutritional value. It’s rich in protein, lower in fat than many red meats, and packed with essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and B vitamins. Families today appreciate it as a deliciously festive yet health-conscious choice that balances indulgence with nutrition.
At Copas Traditional Turkeys, they’ve taken the experience a step further by making sure every bird is raised to the highest welfare standards. Their free-range turkeys are raised in fields in Berkshire, allowed to mature naturally, hand-plucked and game hung to ensure the best possible taste and texture. This attention to quality means that every bite embodies the care and tradition behind it, creating a meal that’s truly worthy of the holiday season.
This Christmas, as you gather around the table, remember that a turkey dinner is about more than food; it’s a reminder of the joy, warmth, and tradition that make the holidays so special. After all, turkey dinner is more than just a meal – it’s the very essence of Christmas.
Order your Christmas turkey now on the Copas website for home delivery, for pick up at their farm in Cookham or for collection at one of their Click & Collect partners in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, London, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Surrey.

Chris tells us about his experience working with Rolex after almost a decade at Prestons Guildford. He also reveals his favourite Rolex collection and offers his advice on how to begin your own or a loved ones’ Rolex journey.
What do you enjoy most about working at Prestons Guildford?
I started at Prestons Guildford when our showroom was based, just opposite, on the other side of the high street, almost ten years ago. I can’t always believe it has been ten years and if I had to choose what I enjoy the most, it would be the people, our clients. They are my most favourite part of the job; our clients often select a Rolex to mark some of the most important milestones in their lives, and it is an honour to be able to learn about their lives and help them find the perfect watch for the occasion, to celebrate themselves or a loved one.
Our relocated showroom, which opened in 2021, was designed to reflect the architectural merit of the Edwardian building it occupies and now features extended spaces dedicated to Rolex. I know the team and I feel incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful space to share with our clients, it offers each individual, couple or family the space, time and privacy to explore the brand further. I truly believe that our showroom is the best possible environment in which to experience the Rolex collections.
The last ten years have been filled with so many wonderful memories, laughter and so many occasions that the team and I have been such a big part of. We feel incredibly fortunate to have built and continue to build the relationships and friendships that we have.
What is it like to work with Rolex?
I feel so genuinely lucky to have worked with Rolex every day for almost a decade – I am still learning new and interesting facts about the brand now. I have seen how much this brand means to so many people, and it is a privilege to hear the stories behind each client’s watch and the way Rolex has accompanied them, or their family, throughout their lives. Each Rolex watch is built to last, to be worn, enjoyed and cherished for a lifetime and even, in many cases, passed down to the next generation.
Do you have a favourite Rolex watch? Or Rolex collection?
It is unbelievably challenging to pick just one watch or one collection; each model or collection of models offers a different aesthetic, a different style but also a different function or set of functions
The first of my favourites would be the ole ady Datejust and Datejust collections. These collections are so varied and versatile, I have recommended them to so many of my clients and still keep discovering new combinations I love. The collections are, together, offered in four si es, and the material, be el, bracelet and dial can be chosen by the client to essentially build a watch that suits their style and their personality perfectly t offers such range and fle ibility
The Datejust 41 in yellow Rolesor, a combination of ct yellow gold and ystersteel, with a fluted be el, a ubilee bracelet and silver dial offers a modern, yet classic, aesthetic that I just love – it is so versatile. would wear this watch with any outfit, at wor , out with friends or for an evening event.
The second collection I have to mention is the Rolex y weller ntroduced in , the yster erpetual y weller was designed for those continually travelling the globe. The watch displays date and month, hours, minutes, seconds and second time one, all of which are easily visible to the wearer. This model is incredibly technical but executed in a way which is simple to use and incredibly elegant and sophisticated to wear.
I have also introduced this collection on a number of occasions and my personal favourite would be the 18ct yellow gold version. This model combines the highest quality 18ct gold alloys, produced in Rolex’s own foundry, with a stri ing blac dial and ysterfle bracelet. It is modern, it is comfortable, and it is wearable – it really is a fantastic watch.

What advice would you give to a new client who wishes to begin their own Rolex journey?
There is so much advice could offer but would say the most important thing is to visit us in store Rolex watches truly come to life when viewed in person and our showroom has been designed to provide the best possible environment in which to experience these watches. The team and I are always available to assist with an enquiry, to arrange an appointment or to offer advice and we are delighted to sit down and discuss any client’s needs.
Before visiting, I know many of our new and existing clients choose to explore Rolex.com to begin learning about all the aesthetic and functional options ole offers to understand which models or collections they may be drawn to. This is another great starting point, and the Rolex configurator is a wonderful tool for discovering your own personal style or taste.
And what advice would you give to a client looking to purchase a Rolex watch for a loved one?
The advice would offer is very similar make an appointment with myself or a member of our dedicated team and let us guide you through the Rolex collection. Throughout an appointment or a consultation, the team and I often ask lots of questions, from what the wearer’s style is li e, to the watches or fine ewellery they may wear now, from their career to when they may hope to wear the watch, from their hobbies and interests, to their favourite colour.
This information helps us offer suggestions, introduce models or collections that you or they may not have considered previously and ultimately helps us offer you the best advice possible There is truly so much to explore in the Rolex collection, so many wonderful features, aesthetics, styles and stories to share. I know I have mentioned a number of collections already, but every collection offers something uni ue, and there is nothing more special than matching a client with their perfect watch – it’s one of my greatest passions.
The team and I have supported so many of our clients, many of which I now consider friends, in purchasing the perfect gift; we recently organised a surprise celebration in our private lounge upstairs. The client had chosen to purchase her husband the Rolex watch he had always dreamed of, it was a Rolex Datejust 41, to commemorate his retirement, and it was such a special moment and one I know I and they will remember for a very long time. I genuinely feel lucky to be part of these moments, to be part of so many of our clients’ memories, milestones and occasions.
From all of us here at Prestons Guildford, we look forward to guiding each of you on your Rolex journey.

Q Why is sports recovery as essential as the training itself?
A Sports recovery is just as important as training because that’s when the body actually gets stronger. Workouts break down muscle fibres, and recovery is what allows them to rebuild, becoming more resilient. Training can also trigger inflammation, central nervous system overload, and injuries. By improving recovery we amplify our outcomes and without it, we risk burnout and injuries, which can sideline us. E ective, optimised recovery makes training sustainable.
Q How do lifestyle factors impact recovery?
A Recovery isn’t just about the workout; it’s a full-body experience - sleep, diet, and mental health play massive roles. Sleep
is crucial for repair: muscles recover, cells regenerate, and the brain recharges. A balanced diet provides essential nutrients for healing. And mental wellbeing can’t be overlooked, as high stress can slow recovery. In my experience, addressing these factors together is key to e ective recovery. For many of the world-class athletes we work with, the ‘bottleneck’ for their training isn’t how much work they can do, it is how they manage their stress loads and recovery.
Q How has technology transformed the world of sports recovery?
A Technology is revolutionising sports recovery, providing athletes with tools to enhance healing and performance. For example, red light therapy supports the
body’s natural recovery by penetrating deep into muscles and joints, helping boost ATP production, which powers cell repair. Devices like our MOVE+ Pro combine red and infrared light with advanced LED and laser technology to target these tissues e ectively. Additionally, pairing red light therapy with methods like blood flow restriction (BFR) training and PlateletRich Plasma (PRP) therapy is yielding powerful results, further optimising recovery. With the MOVE+ Pro, athletes now have access to clinical-level recovery tools used by the pros at home, empowering them to take control of their routines and reach peak performance faster.

Life organises around light. This theme is explored in various philosophical, scientific, and spiritual contexts, but how much of that natural light do we get round here? Certainly not enough for optimal (or even sub-optimal) functioning of our bodies.
Theoretical biophysicist Dr Fritz Albert Popp concluded that the function of our entire metabolism is dependent on light. He introduced the concept of biophotons (ultraweak photon emissions that are involved in cellular communication and regulation) that play a crucial role in maintaining health and potentially influencing genetic activity. He suggested that, for example, cancer could result from a breakdown in the coherent emission of biophotons.
And how does one increase that coherent emission of biophotons in their sun-deprived cells? By consuming good quality, unprocessed foods, and by going outside in the sun, exposing as much skin surface as possible, or by using red-light (photobiomodulation)
The importance of biophotons and how you can stimulate them to improve your wellbeing
therapy which is in the correct spectrum of light. This will increase biophoton emissions by stimulating cellular activity, such as ATP production, and reducing oxidative stress.
Neurosurgeon Jack Kruse posits that light, particularly red and near-infrared (blue light is toxic), stimulates the mitochondria’s electron transport chain, leading to improved energy production at the cellular level. This is seen as critical for health optimisation and potentially reversing or mitigating chronic diseases.
Dr Kruse also suggests that all surgeries should take place under red light. Likewise, and already over ten years ago, renowned biophysicist Tiina Karu was suggesting in her work that photobiomodulation should be considered as a drug equivalent.
Photobiomodulation has been used in clinical practice for over 50 years, and its action mechanisms on cellular and molecular levels have been studied for over 40 years. It has been used in treating healing-resistant wounds and ulcers, in spinal cord injuries and nervous system injuries, and in pain management. It is used, for instance, in treating Parkinson’s, as it prevents mitochondrial dysfunction and dopamine loss, in stimulating stem cells post myocardial infarction (heart attack), without causing any cytotoxic e ects, as well as in depression and anxiety treatment.
We should, of course, prioritise exposure to natural light and turn to photobiomodulation therapies to only compensate for the deficiencies in modern lifestyles and unfavourable locations. And, especially when paired with grounding (or earthing), an increasing number of studies show that it can work wonders in reducing inflammation, improving bone density, enhancing cognitive function, improving sleep, increasing energy levels, and boosting collagen, among many other benefits.
Rock Mill Retreat, in the heart of the Peak District, o ers facilities including medical-grade photobiomodulation therapy, saunas, photon lights, gym, PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field therapy) mats, inversion table, and much more – and could be just what your body needs in the run up to Christmas.

How Fiona Dewson’s elegant north London townhouse was reimagined by Jo Berryman Studio and Stephen Brandes Architects
Words JO BERRYMAN
A“Working alongside a client who is open to suggestions and up for a complete overhaul is a designer’s dream”
long with her family, Fiona had lived in this Grade II-listed house for seven years before plunging into major renovation work, undertaken in order to allow the family, which includes her financier husband and their three children, to adapt their home to meet their changing needs.
My brief included converting the existing firstfloor drawing room into a master bedroom suite to facilitate the creation of four en-suite bedrooms on the upper floors for the children and guests. The refurbishment also involved opening up the lower ground floor by replacing an old extension with a double-height glazed insertion that incorporates a glass balcony, now an office space for Fiona. The ground floor is home to a formal drawing room and a librarycum-study, while a cute, cocoon-like snug on the first floor off ers an entertainment and chill zone for the teenagers.
Working alongside a client who is open to suggestions and up for a complete overhaul is a
designer’s dream. And, despite expressing some initial doubts, Fiona totally came out as colouramorous. The house showcases an idiosyncratic blend of hues and patterns that could seem overwhelming at first glance. However, once the eyes have settled and full absorption of the ambience has set in, it’s easy to appreciate how seamlessly the surroundings flow. The family room on the lower ground floor exemplifies this, boasting an acid yellow geometric wing chair, a flowerbomb rug and a sofa in an unusual spirulina-green looped weave. The eclectic mix is balanced with a pale coral ottoman and powderblue lounge chair.
Fiona and her family wanted to showcase their extensive and growing art collection, and a key component of the brief was to carefully select designs and tones that complemented the art, including a contemporary reinterpretation of The Birth of Venus that adorns the living-room wall. The Nordic blue polished plaster finish is the perfect backdrop for such vivid pieces and the impressive orb-like lantern hanging from the ceiling adds edge to the room’s stately grandeur.
Some choices may have seemed a little too daring at first, such as a gold-mirrored console in the entrance hall, but I tempered the effect by pairing it with a tarnished metallic damask wallpaper and aged mirrored panels. The alabaster moon lights add ethereal softness. The key to design longevity lies in the combination of classical architecture and the use of robust materials such as fumed oak, antiqued bronze and natural stone. The main bedroom is a haven of comfort and tactility, dressed in luxurious materials including a bespoke silk and wool carpet and soft velvets. Its decor, inspired by a 1920s French gouache of Parisian entertainer Mistinguett, maintains a nuanced yet connected feel with the rest of the house. We incorporated built-in shelving in the room, which allows for curated displays of books, objets, family photos and art. Fiona’s home is truly a dynamic and active space that reflects the perpetual evolution of life and family. A little bit of design daring has gone a long way, and this home is proof that brave interior choices can foster a cohesive and harmonious living environment.

After being out of the production line for several decades, Carl Hansen & Søn started producing Hans J. Wegner’s CH22 lounge chair again in 2016. At first glance, one may notice the Wegner chair’s large, distinctive wooden back with visible cover caps, but on closer inspection of the chair, more Wegner signature details become apparent. On the sides, you will see, for example, that the arm support is embracing the side stretcher and the seat frame only to expand to full width under the armrest, to give it optimum support. In the back, the seat’s paper cords are led down around the seat frame and through a horizontal groove in the back rail. There are two refi ned joints on the front of the seat where the front legs are led up through the hand assembled
corners. Although the production has been modernised, today’s CH22 is still manufactured using the same principles of craftsmanship as when Wegner participated in manufacturing the fi rst examples at Carl Hansen’s family-owned workshop in 1950. In the meantime, modernisation has improved precision so that the front legs, which were originally manufactured round, can now have the same profile as the back legs. This means that they are now made as Wegner had originally drawn them.
The CH23 dining chair was one of the fi rst chairs Hans J. Wegner designed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1950. The unique pieces he created at this time set new standards for modern furniture design with their
artistic expression and ergonomic form. Although the CH23 chair may appear uncomplicated at first glance, it incorporates many fi ne, sophisticated details, among them the elegant cruciform cover caps in the backrest, a double-woven seat, and arched rear legs that ensure optimal stability. Carl Hansen & Søn reintroduced the CH23 in 2017, and as always, the design remains true to Wegner’s original, hand-drawn sketches, with all aesthetic and structural components intact.
The very fi rst model Hans J. Wegner designed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949, the CH24 – or Wishbone Chair – has been in continuous production since 1950. With a form that is uniquely its own, the backand armrest are shaped into a single piece.
To give stability to the steam-bent top and ensure comfortable support, Wegner developed the characteristic Y-shaped back that the Wishbone Chair is named after. Ilse Crawford’s innate sense of colour and space marries beautifully with Wegner’s understanding of how a piece of furniture is experienced. The collector’s item is offered in one of nine modern yet timeless hues. The carefully curated palette of translucent, nontoxic, water-based paints adds depth and complexity to the familiar shape, and allows the natural beauty of the wood grain to shine through each design.
The CH25 lounge chair caused a stir due to Wegner’s choice of materials on the backrest and seat. The woven paper cord, a replace-
ment for seagrass developed during World War II, had not been used in furniture before. Wegner was enthusiastic about the look of the material and its durability – as were generations after him. The CH25 lounge chair has been in continuous production since 1950, a testament to Wegner’s visionary approach. It takes a skilled craftsman 10 hours and approximately 400 meters of paper cord to complete one seat and backrest by hand, using a particular technique resembling weaving, which is visible on both sides of the backrest. The striking result of this exacting process is an exceptional chair that is fascinating from all angles.
The CH26 dining chair by Hans J. Wegner was put into production by Carl Hansen &
Søn in close collaboration with the Hans J. Wegner Design Studio and in accordance with Wegner’s original working drawing for translating the lounge chair’s form into a dining chair. He never actually manufactured a mock-up of the armchair and it remained unknown to the public until 2016, when Carl Hansen & Søn brought the CH26 design to life. The dining chair closely resembles the lounge version with its organic shapes, refi ned back and hand-woven seat, and features proportions ideal for longer periods of sitting at a dining table or a desk.

What makes a successful interior designer? Of course, there’s vision. The ability to imagine and realise a beautiful and functional space is the essence of interior design and it’s what people want when they seek help with their homes. But that’s not the end of it. There’s a lot of personality involved too, because the nature of working on your home with someone else is fundamentally intimate. For Sacha Berger, this is a big part of her client approach. “It’s a relationship,” she says. “You’re spending every day in contact with each other for months - it’s fun and very collaborative. I need to put my whole self into it.”
It’s easy to see why this is significant, because Sacha is friendly and relatable, and it’s immediately obvious why people enjoy working with her. Her business Honeybee Interiors evolved organically after she decorated her own Queens Park house; she was running a vintage chandelier business from home and clients would walk through her house to visit the showroom in the loft, and they’d end up asking her for design advice as well as buying chandeliers. After assisting her first client 12 years ago, she founded Honeybee Interiors and quickly gained popularity on the Houzz website, attracting a majority of her clients through the platform. One of them was was Michael Acton Smith, the co-founder of the successful Calm app, who sought her expertise for his Soho Penthouse. His vision? A space filled with mindful blue accents, bohemian finishes and an impressive eight metre long bookcase. The stunning finished apartment was featured in Elle Decoration. When I visit, she’s sitting at her kitchen table surrounded by fabric swatches, working on a single room scheme for a client in Richmond. She shows me the pictures and the brief: it’s a kitchen and living space, and the client wants to add colour to it and liven it up. It’s the kind of thing that many of us find overwhelming. Where to start? And
what colours to use? Should things match, or not? Sacha has a natural flair for making decisions when navigating the enormous quantity of stuff out there. “I throughly review everything and I like to give clients six options for each item, with elevation plans to help visualise how chosen pieces work together,” she says. So she’ll find a variety of fabrics, sofas, lights and offer them up to try and gauge what they like. And while of course she’s working with clients in mind, she says that just as “you can’t buy someone a present that you don’t like yourself,” – it’s ultimately her own personal style that appealed to her clients in the first place, so there’s definitely something of her in every scheme.
But it’s not all about aesthetics. Budgets are a real concern and Sacha doesn’t lose sight of affordability, which has been a large part of her ethos all along. “I can help people decide where to spend their money,” she says. “So for instance, I believe that it’s worth splashing out on pendant lamps, but you can get really good cheap rugs.” Working to budget is not something that designers are generally known for, but Sacha’s practical mindset wouldn’t let her deliver something that was wildly unrealistic.
Most people, interestingly, will come to Sacha with a complete blank slate, wanting a complete new look unencumbered by their old possessions. Most of them will want her to source everything, including art for the walls. “People often just lack confidence,” she says. “They tell me they like the way I use colour and help them be a little bit braver.”
So can she give us some advice? Where do people go wrong when designing their own homes? “Starting with the wall colour can be a mistake. It should be part of the scheme, not the beginning,” she says. “Also, try not to choose individual pieces in isolation, but think of the entire room as whole before making design decisions.” That’s the professional approach – much more than just having a good eye. honeybeeinteriors.co.uk
Alice Crawley’s new rug collection for Layered takes inspiration from Hong Kong and Saigon, with a touch of the British country house
By EVE HERBERT
Arecurring theme for Swedish design brand’s Layered’s new collection by British interior deisgner Alice Crawley is bamboo. It’s a material Alice frequently returns to in her projects and it has become a signature in her design aesthetic.
Alice Crawley is a distinguished interior designer with a background in fashion from Saint Martin’s and 14 years of experience living in Hong Kong and Saigon. Her design philosophy is based on the belief that every room should have a unique character and life. Alice’s work is renowned for blending Western aesthetics with Eastern design,
bringing originality and vibrancy to every space. “I remain inspired by the decade I spent living in Hong Kong and Vietnam,” says Alice. “The patterns and themes revolve around my love for all things chinoiserie and bamboo, blending Asian design elements with English heritage style. I have also taken inspiration from my beloved antique Chinese daybed, which has been reinterpreted as a border on our Indochine rug,” says Alice Crawley. Together with Layered, Alice has worked to create a cohesive capsule collection that represents the Anglo-Asian style.
Alice Crawley strategically utilises the colour palette to create a balance of muted and bold tones. The colours have been carefully selected to bring life and character to
each environment without overwhelming it. “Throughout the process, I learned so much about weaving techniques and how texture can carry design details as beautifully as colour. I felt like a kid in a candy store when I visited Layered’s headquarters and showroom in Stockholm, diving into their fantastic colour library and feeling all the textures,” says Alice. “I spent a lot of time working with the colours, combining muted blues and pinks with rusty reds and woody browns to create a calm but distinct effect that works in most settings.”
A major source of inspiration for the collection has been Alice’s memories from walks with her dogs on Sunset Peak in Hong Kong, where she passed a magical old Chinese house surrounded by bamboo forests. The
light shining through the bamboo shoots inspired Alice to create patterns based on this beautiful natural scene. The collection offers a rug for everyone, with interesting and useable colour combinations, integrating the bamboo silhouette is integrated in two different ways: as an elegant border and as a more abstract pattern. From the calm and simple Indochine rug to the versatile Bamboo Stripe and the geometric Bamboo Forest, there is something for every room and occasion. For the Bamboo Stripe and Bamboo Border rugs, a cut pile was chosen for a sharp and clean finish. The Indochine rug has a contrasting border pattern of tufted loops in a slightly higher pile. layeredinterior.com

Inside the first finished apartment at the new Whiteley’s development in Queensway
London’s first department store was The Whiteley in Bayswater, opened in 1911 by the Lord Mayor of London. At the time it claimed to be the largest shop in the world, and for the next 70 years it operated as a department store until it closed in 1981. Since then the Grade II listed building has been many things – including empty – and only the facade now remains of the original building, which is undergoing a £1.2 billion reinvention. Soon to open as a vast residential and hospitality destination, it has revealed the first of its finished apartments.
Joyce Wang’s eponymous design firm, based in London and Hong Kong, was was tasked with an inimitable fourbedroom third floor residence sat behind the building’s historic Grade II listed façade meticulously restored by Foster + Partners.
Spanning 4,080 sq. ft. with six metre ceiling heights, the apartment comes complete with a large mezzanine reaching 2.7 metres in height and incorporating floorto-ceiling interior windows that overlook a central living space below. Joyce Wang said: “The quietly luxurious and grand space we have crafted is layered with custom pieces spanning eras and continents, as well as collectibles
“The quietly luxurious and grand space is layered with custom pieces spanning eras and continents”
“The residence showcases diverse influences from Asia, the United Kingdom and across Europe”
from and inspired by our imaginary client’s travels.”
The studio pledged to preserve the unique character and Edwardian heritage of the building. Elevations, cornicing, panelling and moulding designs all echo the language of The Whiteley’s architecture, with a sense of modernity and freshness evoked through playful colours, a bold reimagining of volumes, and custom wallpaper by Fromental. There was a focus on collaborating with designers and makers who share in the innovative spirit of William Whiteley, the founder of the original 1911 department store, who brought together an eclectic selection of wares from across the globe. Designed to evoke the tastes of an imaginary globetrotter, the residence showcases diverse influences from Asia, the United Kingdom and across Europe, resulting in a juxtaposition of collectibles, heirlooms, custom-made limited editions, antiques and crafts which reflect the spirit of travel and adventure. The curated curios are arranged for elevated contrast, with rustic and textured pieces set against sleek surfaces;
while organic and avant garde elements are balanced by more familiar counterparts.
Collectibles chosen for the apartment include exclusive pieces from Irish furniture brand Orior, antique chandeliers from the Georgian era to the turn of the 20th century period, and stunning rugs and tapestry from Aubusson’s Pinton featuring ‘La Grande Porte Bleue’ tapestry. Two commissioned artworks by Armando Mesías feature alongside prints by Lisa King and a library collection from Ultimate Library.
Additional elements include antiques from 1stDibs, and stunning rugs from Milan’s CC Tapis. London’s Porta Romana was selected for a number of the space’s chandeliers and lighting fixtures. Luxury design and fragrance house L’OBJET worked with Joyce Wang for a bespoke selection of dinnerware, vanity fragrance, and décor items, alongside The Lacquer Company who provided home accessories and furniture. This apartment is currently on the market for £17.25 million.
London is filled with an array of incredible architectural designs including everything from grand Victorian terraces and Georgian townhouses to art deco mansions and contemporary new builds.
Today, homeowners in Kensington and Chelsea are looking for a delicate balance when upgrading the windows and doors in their property. Preserving the historical character of their homes is essential as is finding a modern high performing solution.
New windows and doors are a big investment and so replacement windows and doors must do more than look attractive – they must deliver on multiple fronts. High security features are essential, while superior
thermal performance has become increasingly important amid rising energy costs and environmental consciousness.
Premium steel windows and doors effortlessly meet these demands. In fact, the products offer something that alternative materials can’t match, including incredibly slim profiles that flood interiors with natural light as well as unparalleled strength and security.
What’s more, steel windows and doors can last in excess of 60 years, which is more than double the lifespan of uPVC, making them a sustainable choice for those who are more eco-conscious.
Industrial aesthetics are increasingly popular in London’s interior design scene and it’s this trend that has brought the distinctive look and style of our steel windows and doors to the forefront.
However, as a building material which was first launched in the UK in 1849, the performance of steel manufactured today is unfortunately still compared to those that were made more than 150 years ago - but this shouldn’t be the case.
Today’s steel windows and doors, manufactured from high-grade recycled steel, deliver exceptional thermal efficiency that matches the performance of rival window and door materials. The modern glazing options and innovative designs mean that the products, created by our team of specialists at Crittall Windows, achieve impressive energy efficiency credentials, ensuring homes remain well insulated throughout the year.
Security is also guaranteed as high-quality steel windows and doors come equipped with sophisticated multi-point locking systems as standard, keeping homes well protected from unwanted intruders.
While interior trends come and go, the appeal of steel windows and doors remains timeless. Their longevity and performance make them a wise choice for those looking to enhance their property’s value and aesthetic appeal. The combination of durability, security and thermal efficiency creates a product that not only looks fantastic but also performs for many years to come.
Since 1849, Crittall Windows has manufactured iconic external steel windows and doors for homes across the globe.

Inside Isla Lawrie's world of textile design you’ll fi nd expertly made products in the fi nest and most luxurious materials. She’s an expert in the ways in which colour, texture and subject matter impact mental health and wellbeing, and her designs are bold, bright and uplifting to help to make your home a personal sanctuary.
Isla grew up in the west coast of Scotland where she delved into all things creative, spending all of her time playing various instruments and painting. As a young teenager she developed a pain condition that completely changed her life, affecting her ability to write, draw and play any instrument. However, refusing to let her pain win, she mastered drawing with the assistance of an electronic drawing tablet.
This experience sparked her passion for handdrawn, digital art and design. Now she specialises in hand-drawn, digitally printed textiles for interior spaces, but also enjoys designing for a variety of end uses.
Her passion is for interior textiles and the impact they have on emotional health and wellbeing. She is fascinated by colour psychology and its possible uses to improve concentration, mental health and general wellbeing. Throughout her design process, she uses the results of studies on colour psychology and the effects that images have on the speed of healing after surgery to create beautiful and bright interior textiles.
Her collection focuses on the transformative power of artistic beauty on mental health with its bright and bold patterns designed to inspire creativity, focus and an overall more positive mindset. It is her primary goal to enhance wellbeing through creativity. Research shows that colours and shapes used in interiors can impact the wellbeing of those surrounded by the designs. Isla hopes to go on to use this knowledge to improve the lives of people who are suffering from debilitating disabilities and injuries that may make them feel trapped in their own homes.
At Isla Lawrie, all patterned fabrics are created using recycled yarns and dyed using recycled ink. islalawrie.com

With the holiday season approaching, security should be a priority. Statistics show a 20% rise in home burglaries in December, with many homes left unattended as people travel or shop, while increased online activity drives a 30% surge in cyber scams and phishing attacks. At Valkyrie, we understand the critical importance of proactive security for your home, data, and personal safety, providing peace of mind during this busy season. Building on our November guide, here’s a focused checklist for a worry-free, secure holiday season.
• Check doors and windows: Ensure all entry points have quality locks; consider adding smart locks for extra control.
• Test alarms and cameras: confirm all systems are functional; update software to avoid vulnerabilities.
• Install timers for lights, creating an appearance of occupancy.
• Manage deliveries and hold mail: schedule deliveries when home or use secure drop-off points. Arrange mail holding or have a neighbour collect it to avoid visible buildup.
• Landscaping: cut back bushes and trees near entry points to remove hiding spots and maintain clear sightlines around your property.
• Lock external buildings: secure garages, sheds, and storage areas to prevent access to tools or ladders.
• Inform trusted neighbours of your plans so they can help monitor your property.
• Strengthen Wi-Fi security: update router passwords and enable WPA3 encryption for strong protection.
• Secure new devices: change default settings, use strong passwords, and enable two-factor authentication for new tech.
• Run software updates: keep all devices—computrs, phones, and security systems—up-todate to avoid vulnerabilities.
• Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) when accessing public Wi-Fi, especially while travelling.
• Be cautious with holiday E-Cards: verify senders before opening e-cards to avoid malware.
• Create strong, unique passwords for each account; consider a password manager.
• Back up important data: regularly back up fi les to secure cloud storage or an external drive.
• Confi rm the identity of contractors and delivery personnel; request ID if in doubt.
• Secure valuables in a locked or hidden location, especially when hosting guests or workers.
• Refrain from posting travel itineraries on social media to avoid alerting intruders.
• Restrict guest access: limit guest access to private rooms by keeping doors locked.
• Keep emergency contacts handy and share them with family.
By following these steps, you’ll enjoy a secure festive season with your home, data, and personal safety protected. At Valkyrie, we believe that thoughtful preparation is the best gift you can give yourself this holiday. valkyrie.co.uk

Absolutely discovers Rhodes to be a blissful island in the sun
By SANDY CADIZ-SMITH
The beautiful island of Rhodes is one of Greece’s Dodecanese islands.
Nicknamed the Emerald Isle because of its vivid green hills, it’s the fourth largest island in Greece, famous for the legendary bronze statue - the Colussus of Rhodes - one of the seven Wonders of the Ancient World which once guarded its Old Town. And while the statue has long since disappeared, there’s still plenty to wonder at with so much natural beauty, rich and ancient history, delectable food, and that irascible Greek welcome.
We begin our Rhodian odyssey at the stunning Lindos Grand Resort & Spa. And
what a place to start. The adults-only resort overlooks the sparkle of the Cove of Vylcha. Our first sight on arrival is the spectacular view from reception across the crystal clear infinity pool. Shades of blue beckon. As does our luxurious suite just up the hill with more sparkling Greek vistas - and another pool, our very own L-shaped one. Our spacious and modern suite has a marble bathroom and a welcoming verandah with stunning cove vistas. It’s a short walk down to the cove with its beautifully balmy waters, perfect for chilled beach time. And our relaxation is complete when we enjoy a therapeutic massage in the tranquility of the Evridiki Spa. Charming Lindos Village is an easy drive away, and we explore its whitewashed buildings through
winding alleyways and shops crammed with irresistible mementos. We climb the 294 steps to the summit of the Temple of Athenia Lindia (Lindos Acropolis) and take in the fabulous views before returning to our home at Lindos Grand for some much-needed refreshment.
And what refreshment there is on o er. Staying here is a real treat for the tastebuds, from the sumptuous breakfast bu et at Terra Mar and alfresco Greek and Mediterranean lunches at Agistri to fine dining at Thalatta on the hotel’s roof terrace under a rising moon. The culinary crescendo is undoubtedly on our final night when a superb Pan Asian banquet is prepared in front of us at Yume Mou - a feast to remember forever.
And there’s more to come at our second destination, the just-as-spectacular Gennadi Grand Resort. The resort feels like a welcoming village with rooms sprinkled through beautiful gardens and all paths leading down to the expansive beach. Our
suite is chic and contemporary with yet another private pool (it’s getting to be a joyous habit), and there are also several communal pools and that glorious beach and sea, of course.
Days are again filled with gourmet glory in the sunshine. We breakfast from one of the most indulgent menus ever at Level 2 with its stunning Med views, treat ourselves to snacks and cocktails at the pool and beach bars, and tuck into delightful Mezedakia (small plates) at Ouzo. As night falls, we enjoy innovative fine dining served with passion at Edesma. In between, we learn how to make our exotic cocktails and some traditional Greek dishes, the perfect way to take some of that Gennadi magic home.
We tear ourselves away from our heavenly resort environment to spend time in the fascinating Rhodes Old Town, an enchanting blend of medieval charm, rich history, and vibrant cultures. The past comes alive in every story and every stone of its ancient walls, and
“The resort feels like a welcoming village with rooms sprinkled through beautiful gardens”
we complete our visit with dinner in the cozy courtyard of Marco Polo restaurant with its array of mouthwatering dishes served in the soft glow of candlelight. The perfect conclusion to our journey through the diverse joys of this blissful island in the sun.

Discovering natural beauty and culinary treasures in this lively city
By SANDY CADIZ-SMITH
“Lively streets are lined with attractive Georgian buildings, bars, restaurants, and quirky shops”
The fascinating Irish capital is bursting with history and literary tradition. It’s been home to many writers and poets including James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, and Dracula creator, Bram Stoker. Their stories resonate throughout the lively streets lined with attractive Georgian buildings, bars, restaurants, and quirky shops.
From the buzz of Grafton Street to the hallowed halls of Trinity College and the beloved garden square of St Stephens Green, there’s so much to absorb. Dublin is also the home of Guinness and prides itself on its vibrant pub culture; and with its youthful population, it’s a great party city. As if this
wasn’t enough of a draw, there’s even more Irish magic waiting to be discovered.
After a pleasantly short flight from London, we check in to our base, Anantara The Marker Dublin Hotel, overlooking the waterfront in the heart of the city’s newly renovated docklands. It’s sleek and contemporary and our spacious corner room is light-filled with floor-to-ceiling windows revealing scenic canal and mountain views. There’s every luxury amenity in the gleaming marble bathroom, a huge bed dressed with the plushest of linens, and a comprehensive mini bar with tea and co ee-making facilities which makes us happy. We do love our early morning tea.
The sun is shining, perfect for our welcome lunch in the stylish rooftop restaurant with 360-degree city and mountain views. Chef
Gareth Mullins (who also heads up the award-winning Forbes Street restaurant downstairs) is proudly waiting to delight us with his creatively delicious dishes using the best Irish ingredients. We devour oysters, scallops, lobster, lamb, and the freshest fruit and vegetables, perfectly complemented with chilled champagne. It’s the welcome of dreams. Food is undoubtedly the superstar of any stay at Anantara The Marker Dublin. Starting with a truly sumptuous breakfast spread including local specialities (stellar white pudding and smoked salmon) and a minute steak dish - steak for breakfast - does life get more indulgent? The hotel has curated a special Spice Spoons culinary programme to showcase all the fabulous food that Ireland o ers.
Escorted by Chef Gareth we take the short trip along the picturesque coastal trail to the quaint fishing village of Howth. We board a private boat for some seal and pu n-spotting before returning to the local seafood market, Kish Fish to learn the art of salmon smoking and tuck into a gloriously fresh fish and chip lunch. Then it’s back to the hotel for some oyster tasting, soda bread making, and an Irish co ee masterclass, complete with caviar - a dream pairing.
After all that feasting, we need a good walk and luckily there’s plenty to discover within easy strolling distance from our hotel. We take a tour of the city centre, visiting Grafton Street and Merrion Square Park to marvel at the striking statue of Oscar Wilde - a tribute to his lasting impact on Irish culture. We finish at the legendary Bewley’s Co ee Shop on Grafton Street, one of the city’s oldest cafes and a cultural hub for literary legends through history. The streets of Dublin certainly have many enthralling tales to tell. We return to our hotel for indulgent facials and massages in the serenity of the

spa and some relaxation time before another fabulous dinner courtesy of Chef Gareth.
The dreamy cuisine is not our only Irish epiphany. It’s something of a revelation to discover how easy it is to escape to the countryside. As well as Howth we visit White Rock Beach in Killiney. It’s another short and pretty drive away to the huge and deserted beach, ideal for long walks and wild swimming. It’s dramatically beautiful and bracing. The sun comes out again and Killiney sparkles in shades of blue and green. Dublin and its surrounds have many a surprise in store.
It’s no surprise that many have rhapsodised about the Emerald Isle. It’s uplifting, relaxing and delicious on many levels. Everyone has a story to tell, there’s endless natural beauty and culinary treasures to relish and the hospitality is extraordinary (it’s known as the city of a thousand welcomes, after all). Dublin is a brilliant destination for a break that perfectly blends the best of city and country pursuits. All activities can be organised by Anantara The Marker Dublin Hotel. Booking in advance is highly recommended.

The stylish Venicci Claro is a compact pushchair that sets new standards for city strolling
Reviewed by CARLY GLENDINNING
If you’re looking for a multi-tasking 2-in-1 pram and stroller that does it all, look no further than the new Venicci Claro. Stylish, ultra lightweight (at only 10.4kg), easy to fold, and a dream to navigate, it sets new standards for city strolling. The fi rst thing we noticed when we unboxed the Claro was the luxurious details. We tried the Claro in the on-trend ‘Caramel’ colour-way and we loved the plush fabrics and the sleek aluminium frame with subtle rose gold accents. It was super easy to assemble, just click on the wheels and the stroller seat or baby bassinet, and you’re all set. The travel-system-ready Claro can be used with corresponding Venicci car seats and folds easily and quickly with just one hand with the stroller seat attached. It has a handy travel strap to allow you to carry it on your shoulder – which was perfect for getting around on public transport and climbing up stairs in the city. With a super cosy seat and generous hood, my toddler had no problem napping
on-the-go in the Claro. Nice and roomy, the seat feels safe and secure with a soft padded five-point harness with magnetic buckle and bumper bar. It can also easily be turned around, giving your little one the option to be parent-facing or world facing as they travel. The hood fabric is water-repellant and UV50-resistant, and my little one seemed super comfortable as we strolled about the city. For babies, the bassinet has clever panoramic ventilation, allowing optimum airflow and thermal comfort. We loved the quilted fabric inside the bassinet, which looked not only stylish, but super snuggly for little ones. With an adjustable handlebar, the Claro was comfortable for both my husband and I to push. Our favourite feature though, was the smaller gel wheels. Super durable
with good shock absorption, they made navigating uneven pavements a breeze. It’s this extra attention to detail that Venicci has become so well known for, and the Claro doesn’t disappoint when it comes to innovative extras. From road-safe reflectors on the pram seat and carrycot, to an extra-generous basket, and stylish matching accessories including a changing bag, footmu , and raincover the Claro really has got everything. This is a pram you’ll be able to use from birth, for many years to come.
The 2-in-1 Claro pushchair with accessories pack retails at £599 and comes complete with raincover, changing bag with changing mat, and a cosy apron. venicci.co.uk

Karen Pedro, Headteacher of Gayhurst Primary in Hackney – part of the Leap Federation – on why her pupils are phone free
We banned phones for children three years ago following the pandemic. Not just smartphones but all phones. At the time I expected some pushback from parents – particularly those with children in Years 5 and 6 who were walking home alone – but actually, the rule was embraced and accepted by the large majority of parents.
We felt comfortable taking the lead on this issue at Gayhurst. I think schools setting boundaries around phones was something parents desperately wanted. It has helped them to have much clearer messaging for their children that smartphones just aren’t appropriate for their age.
This is something that the Smartphone
Free Childhood (SFC) movement has really tapped into. That sense of collective action by and for parents has lifted the burden for so many families who might have felt they were facing this dilemma alone. It is why the SFC grassroots movement has been so successful this year.
What began as a couple of concerned messages between two mums about smartphones in February this year has exploded into a global movement in a few short months. As I write this, the SFC Parent Pact, an online pledge to withhold smartphones from children until they are
at least 14, has been signed by more than 50,000 parents with children in nearly 8,000 of the UK’s schools. I am proud to say that parents of Gayhurst School pupils have signed the Parent Pact.
Banning phones really helped in terms of the volume of issues we were dealing with in school. WhatsApp was awful. We had children creating multiple groups and then excluding others from those groups. And it was done to such extremes, it was like wildfire, like playground bullying but on a high-tech platform that doesn’t shut o . That’s just not a way children should be
“WhatsApp was awful. We had children creating multiple groups and then excluding others... like playground bullying but on a high-tech platform”
“What began as a couple of concerned messages between two mums about smartphones has exploded into a global movement in a few short months”
spending their childhood.
By sending children a clear message that they can’t have phones in school, it also sets the expectation that issues around phones don’t belong in school either. We want school to be a safe space where children can learn and play together in real life.
I’m sure it helps families to feel that they have our backing. I think many parents have felt trapped in an impossible situation. On the one hand, the fear of giving their children access to a smartphone and all the (now welldocumented) problems that come with
that, such as harmful content, addictive algorithms and the anxiety merry-goround of social media. On the other hand, there’s a fear of their child being socially excluded if they don’t. Establishing very clear boundaries in school has helped reduce some of the family conflict and the pressure parents and children feel.
We don’t just ban phones, we explain why. From Year 4 we talk to pupils explicitly, putting phone use into the context of the school playground – how you wouldn’t exclude others in the playground so it’s not OK online. And we
link the issues around phones to PSHE and wellbeing. We don’t just teach e-safety, but also look at phone use in the context of pupils protecting their mental health. We explain why using something like WhatsApp can be very negative.
We have seen a real shift in the past year and a half – the children can really see the link between being on a phone and their own state of mind. They start to see why it’s a negative picture. It’s far more common now to hear a child say ‘Oh, I’ve got a brick phone’ quite proudly.
For children entering secondary school in Year 7, the peer pressure ramps up even more. In my view, setting boundaries around smartphones in those early secondary school years is crucial, too. The more that parents buy into the idea that children do not have a smartphone until they are 14 the better.
With two former elite athletes in leadership roles, London Park Schools is focused on choice, fun and capitalwide opportunities
The highly anticipated London Park Schools Clapham opened its doors in September, with the two wellestablished and successful Eaton Square schools changing their names to LPS Mayfair and LPS Sixth. Three schools, a fresh dynamic – and that includes the delivery of sport.
That’s no surprise really, since LPS Principal Suzie Longsta is a former elite athlete, and so is LPS Senior and Sixth Head Adrian Rainbow. Before she moved into education, Longsta had a rowing career that included coxing the British Olympic VIII at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and Cambridge University’s ‘Goldie’ in 1997 and 1998 Boat Races. Rainbow, meanwhile,
played pro American football. He was an All-Canadian quarterback during his time at University of Columbia and was then drafted to Montreal Alouettes before transferring to Germany and playing ten seasons in its American football league.
If you imagined that would mean a trophy mindset, think again – it’s anything but. Both Suzie Longsta and Adrian Rainbow are great believers in sport’s power to engage all levels; “inclusive and fun” are key descriptors from Longsta . LPS wants everyone from complete beginner to elite athlete – and its cohort includes rising stars at elite level – to be helped to enjoy their game/s.
Sam Green, Head of Sport at LPS Senior and Sixth, says it’s about giving each student the chance to shine. “Students benefit from a personalised and nurturing approach within the classroom, but access
“As an average performer until I found my Olympic sport, I understand the importance of breadth”
to the sports provision of a much bigger school,” he says. “This approach not only allows us to be competitive in a broad range of fixtures against larger schools, but also o er a broad range of opportunities.”
Tuesday afternoon is dedicated to sports clubs – an opportunity for all year groups to unite within their chosen sports. LPS has competitive fixtures throughout the year in mainstream sports. But also cycling at the local national-level velodrome, beach volleyball on the sands below London Bridge and access to climbing wall and CrossFit challenges. Sport is central to the curriculum, with both Games and PE lessons. “This provides us with the opportunity to expose them to many di erent sports,” says Adrian Rainbow. “This is then complemented by our enrichment and co-curricular programme, where students are able to opt for a wide range of sports at lunch and after school.”
Being in central London brings challenges and opportunities. “Our enthusiasm and bold aspirations for our students far outweigh the challenges. An example of this is our purchase of a boat club in Putney and we look forward to building rowing into our sporting programme within the next year,” says Suzie Longsta . Sam Green says there is a logistical element to planning sport – for example, students are using ten di erent locations over the Summer Term – but the reward is in top-class locations. “To name a few examples, we have Green Park directly
across the road where we are currently doing ultimate frisbee in our Core PE lessons. We have an extremely popular boxing club at the BuddhaBox in Mayfair, explore London landmarks in our Royal Parks run club, use indoor cricket nets at the Oval and the sports hall at the Queen Mother gym in Victoria.”
Beyond all the obvious benefits, LPS sees sport as a vital part of building a ‘coaching mentality’. “This is all wrapped up with our emphasis on growth mindset and achieving success in a way that is individualised,” says Adrian Rainbow. Suzie Longsta adds that the coaching mentality develops inner and outer strengths. “It focuses on the inner student, developing their skills to focus, take responsibility and to support others.” And, from personal experience, she knows why range is vital.
“As an average sporting performer until I found my Olympic sport, I understand the importance of breadth and opportunity –the power of trying new sports.”
“I always explain to our students that everything I learned about myself I learned on the American football pitch,” says Adrian Rainbow. The good news for LPS students is that the team are “horizon scanning” for opportunities all the time. Be it learning to sail a tall ship or trying out a newcomer (Padel is one they are watching carefully right now), there’s challenge and the opportunity to grow skills and passions.
“We want our students to discover and develop their talents, enjoy themselves, and make lifelong memories and friendships – and if this is through the less conventional school sports, then great,” says Suzie Longsta .

“They
won’t see it as work, they won’t see it as exercise, they will just see it as fun, and they’ll want to do it over and over again”
Parkour is fun, and with a focus on individual physical and mental challenge, which is why it’s a brilliant activity for children
Mention parkour to most people and the first thing they think of is crazy stunts across rooftops in TV adverts or the classic James Bond chase scene that opened Casino Royale. The second thing they think is: ‘That looks dangerous’. But think again.
Now recognised o cially as a sport in the UK, parkour is becoming increasingly popular for children from primary years up. And, says Dan Edwardes, founder of Parkour Generations, it has an excellent safety record. “Statistically, parkour is way down on the risk list compared to most traditional sports. In fact, injuries per 1,000 hours is lower than almost any traditional sport.”
Edwardes was a UK pioneer of parkour, which is, in simplest terms, the discipline of freely moving in and around your space. While the roots of parkour can be traced back to everything from martial arts to obstacle courses, the parkour we know now is widely acknowledged to have developed in the Paris suburbs in the 1990s. It’s still a big deal there – in fact, a parkour torch bearer was part of the opening ceremony of this summer’s Olympics.
While the stunts on TV are undeniably cool, this is not how parkour is taught to children. It’s a logical step on from play.
Watch any group of toddlers to teens in a playground and you will see an almost obsessive compulsion to clamber up, around, over and through things. “Our birthright as human beings is to be very physically literate and very adaptive movers, and so all parkour is doing is tapping into that natural desire to move and play and giving it a little bit more discipline and focus,” says Edwardes.
While Parkour Generations’ work ranges from advising on stunts and sequences in film to training serious practitioners, its grassroots-level arm is central. It has worked with schools up and down the country and internationally since 2005, training teachers, leading sessions and also designing and supplying parkour equipment and courses for indoor and outdoor facilities.
It’s also behind the London Parkour School in Docklands, a centre specifically for the under 16 age group. This opened just after the pandemic and now hosts children from all over London. The school even runs micro parkour sessions for tots from six months. More centres are now being planned across London and other UK cities.
Parkour is a brilliant way for children to let o steam because it combines elements of play with physical and mental challenges. “About 25% of all play is what’s called locomotor play. So, if you leave kids alone, at least a quarter of their time will be spent in very physical, very active play,” says Edwardes. “If you catch them early and
you encourage them to move, and you make movement easier for them and more fun, they are much more likely to stick with it.”
So how does parkour work when you’re teaching it to a lively bunch of kids? “A lot of people might think that we get them to focus on parkour techniques but actually, especially when they are young, there’s not a lot of technical instruction. That’s not a good way to get kids moving. The better way is the constraint-led method, which is basically to give them some parameters,” he says.
This might be an obstacle course to complete as fast as possible then tag a teammate, or a task where they have to stay o the ground (a lava-style game).
“They won’t see it as work, they won’t see it as exercise, they will just see it as fun, and they’ll want to do it over and over again,” says Edwardes. “As a teacher, that’s done your job for you – you don’t need to motivate them, they’re very happy to do that all day!”
It’s a style of movement that is both natural and empowering, as children test their own limits and learn to use the space presented to them. Along the way, they are developing strength, agility and coordination, but also thinking skills as they learn to judge risks, appraise situations and find practical solutions.
One other reason parkour is so appealing to children is that it’s not about competing to win. “It’s trained in groups, and it’s got a hugely strong community base and a social aspect to it, but it’s a solo skill,” says Dan Edwardes. This gives it real advantages over traditional play-to-win sports. “About 50% of kids don’t have much interest in competitive sport. But equally, the kids that do have a competitive streak also enjoy
“Parkour develops strength, agility and coordination, but also thinking skills as children learn to judge risks and fi nd practical solutions”
parkour because it is so challenging.”
Schools are receptive to parkour – when you talk to any sports lead these days, they are more focused on establishing lifelong habits of activity than on trophy cabinets. That said, parkour helps with both objectives. “Sports are fantastic in their physical development, but they are quite specialised in their movement skills,” says Dan Edwardes. “It’s better to give a kid a broad based, general physical literacy when they are young. If they’ve got that they can adopt any sport they want for the rest of their life.” And the
breadth of movements involved builds body resilience, something that Edwardes believes can help guard against injuries.
As to whether this will ever become an Olympic competition – probably not in the short term. Not that this matters to most children. For them, this is supercharged fun, with playful tests that build both confidence and a greater understanding of their own body’s amazing capabilities. For that reason alone, parkour is a brilliant addition to the sports roster.

The Head Master of Rugby School on why regulated phone use and unregulated time to play, learn and socialise are vital for our young people
Irecently attended a meeting with 15 CEOs from diverse industries. They were collectively bemoaning the work habits of their Gen Z sta . As the only educationalist in the room, I was blamed for shortcomings in the education system and for its failure to produce su ciently robust employees. The conversation was a jovial one and in more serious moments they did speak positively about this particular age group. Nevertheless, the conversation did bring to mind Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation Haidt’s book makes two key points. First, unregulated access to smartphones has done and continues to do significant damage to children. Second, a culture of ‘safetyism’, developed over more than 40 years, has produced children who have been mollycoddled and, as a result, are reluctant to take part in adventurous play or to seize opportunities where an element of risk is involved. Haidt’s verdict on smartphones has
attracted the most column inches and it is reassuring that most schools have now imposed restrictions on their use. The impact of ‘safetyism’ has received less attention, but is equally important. Many children born in this millennium have experienced a childhood where perceived risks in the real world have been greatly exaggerated, while the genuine risks of the online world have been ignored.
Schools like Rugby provide an antidote to these two modern problems. Smartphones have long been banned from our classrooms, with strict limits on mobile phone use outside the classroom. This allows our students to have more face-to-face interactions with each other and to engage wholeheartedly, and without electronic interruption,
“Perceived risks in the real world have been greatly exaggerated, while risks of the online world have been ignored”
in the adventurous group activities where they learn the skills which are so important for making the most of life at school and for thriving after school. Just as important are the opportunities for the students to have fun and spend unregulated time with each other, busy or not. We have more than 30 student bands, each of which has to find the time to practise and manage the dynamics of group performance. There are informal games of sport long into the summer evenings. Students are learning about collaboration, managing their reactions, forging real-time friendships, discovering what they are good at and what they like doing – without other-world distraction.
We can safely and confidently provide these opportunities, organised or not, because we are a full boarding school with the time and space to educate beyond the classroom. Perhaps the most important element of a full boarding school is the House system. Our boarding houses have approximately 50 students with 10 in each year group. There is something magical in the way that 10 students who come together at the age of 13 learn – despite, or perhaps because of, the inevitable squabbles and conflicts – how to live together successfully in a community and absorb the vital life skills that transport them beyond the Gen Z stereotypes presented by my CEO friends.
