LETTER Editor’s
ABSOLUTELY’S December issue highlights
Now, for some reason, I have a bit of a reputation of being a moaner at Absolutely. One person's moan is another's valid point, I believe, so do feel it's a little harsh. But it's why when Christmas rolls around, I am often compared to The Grinch, despite the fact I actually like the festive season. Sometimes it's difficult to shake off those tags. But there are plenty of serious messages we need to listen to around this time of the year, and be aware that some people genuinely struggle over Christmas, for whatever reason. It's why I wanted to catch up with Anna Williamson this month, well-known for her bright and positive persona on TV, but who is also a life coach day to day and points out that not everyone wants to – or should – get into the Christmas spirit. Saying that, Anna points out that she does love this time of the year, and both she and the team at Visit Herts have suggested spots to make the most of the season. We also round up all the best Christmas events – and, yes, there's even a screening of The Grinch that takes centre stage. Have a merry one!

TIME AT THE BAR
Why Catching the Chain is a unique exhibition to see over the festive period
ACHRISTMAS
This Month’s Must See
ISPECTACULAR WITH JAMES MAYHEW
llustrator James Mayhew is back with the de Havilland orchestra for a double-bill of magic and merriment to welcome the festive season. As the orchestra performs some festive favourites, James paints his illustrations live before your very eyes, all in perfect synchronicity with the music. Featuring the glorious Christmas Overture by Coleridge-Taylor, full of all your favourite Christmas carols, as well as Prokofiev’s Troika (Sleigh Ride), which was the composer’s first attempt at film music. uharts.co.uk
thought-provoking collaborative exhibition on crime and the justice system, where visitors can discover first-hand the experience of being behind bars, is now open at St Albans Museum + Gallery. “Catching the Chain” is a phrase used in prison communities to refer to leaving prison and re-entering society. With the Government releasing o enders early from prison to make more space, it has never been a more important focus for debate. Inspired by the building in which it takes place - St Albans Museum + Gallery was once the Town Hall where dramatic stories of law and order unfolded - the community collaboration exhibition brings to life the history of criminal justice and the ways in which communities have dealt with o ending over the centuries, from the Iron Age to today.
Visitors to the exhibition can experience what it’s like being held in a recreation of a life-size modern prison (complete with bed and toilet) created by participants of a TurnAround project run by HACRO, a charity which supports o enders, potential o enders and their families to make positive changes to their lives and to reduce the number of victims of crime. The exhibition will also include art created in response to written accounts of trials held in the Museum + Gallery’s historic courtroom. Artists used a variety of di erent mediums including paints, charcoals, mosaics, photos, music, live performance and mixed media.

HAND Helping
Whether through her smash hit podcast, o ering advice on Celebs Go Dating or best selling books, Hertfordshire’s Anna Williamson is the go-to to get things o your chest this Christmas
Anna Williamson is a trailblazer. It’s a term often bandied around these days, but whatever she puts her mind to seems to really strike a chord with the general public. Celebs Go Dating is a behemoth of a TV show, and her calm advice and approachable demeanour to the contestants has become a key component of why it is so loved. Then there’s her podcast with Luisa Zissman, where you can always expect no holds barred conversation about all manner of life’s big issues. And yet it all started with a look into Anna’s own mind and a best selling book a decade ago.
“It will be ten years since I’ve written Breaking Mad: The Insider's Guide to Conquering Anxiety in 2025,” she says. “It feels so much longer in some respects, but also yesterday in others, and so much has happened in that ten years. I’ve become a mum twice over, I’ve been married, my career has shot o in all di erent directions, and I look back at all that time and am overall really proud of where I’ve come from, from being in a position where anxiety and mental health wasn’t talked about in laymen’s terms and in an accessible way.
“I wanted to write the book that I needed to have read when I was in the grips of a mental breakdown when diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder,” she adds. “It went into Amazon’s No.1 best-seller list, which is an achievement that is up there in my top three life achievements. To have written a No.1 best-selling book based on my experiences and my professional techniques
is so humbling. I get very choked up when people message me saying that they’re reading it and how helpful it has been.”
How did she feel when it became such a huge hit? “It made me realise just how many people were su ering with mental health issues and how many people just needed something relatable to read,” she says. “Not just relatable, but also full of tips and help from a therapeutic’s point of view. So, I guess delighted, overwhelmed, and humbled.”
More hit books have followed since, namely Breaking Mum and Dad: The Insider's Guide to Parenting Anxiety, How Not to Lose It: Mental Health - Sorted and Where is the Love? “I adore writing,” she smiles. “The written word really is my escapism. I’m annoyingly a texter, an emailer, a writer; it’s how I like to communicate. I love to talk as well, but I do find it easier to write, and when I put pen to paper or I’m typing, I just go to a place in my head and my heart where I can’t go when I’m talking. I think it’s so powerful to write and particularly for me, it’s how I articulate myself the best.” Is there another book on the horizon?
“Funnily enough, I have two book ideas that I’m speaking to my publishers about, but I just haven’t had the time to flesh them out. There’s a process when you write a book where you go through proposals and treatments and sample chapters, and I just haven’t had the chance to really get myself together with it. But yes, I’ve got two amazing ideas around another book.”
That’s tantalising enough for her fans, but where Anna and Luisa take their podcast next is equally as exciting. Absolutely last spoke to Anna just before LuAnna went on tour in 2022, which proved to be a monumental success. “We are beyond blessed, as cheesy as that sounds, but we truly never ever anticipated LuAnna to become the enormous success that it has become. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger, and Luisa and I were ahead of the curve it turns out with podcasting. Who knew that podcasting would become such a big thing? We seem to have got this enormous fanbase which is wonderful; our Lu-Fanians
as we call them! We’ve got well over one million listeners every month and we must be near the one hundred million mark of overall listeners, which is extraordinary. We are super grateful, and the best is yet to come.”
Why does she think the podcast works?
“I think it works because Luisa and I are just good mates, we’ve been mates now for over eight years and we are very di erent on some things, but we do align on other things,” Anna considers. “The underpinning success of what we do is that we are two women that really respect each other. We respect each other’s opinions, thoughts, values, and beliefs, even if it’s not something that we might align with, but we do align on a lot of things, more than what people think we do. We’re both very caring, loyal people and are very family driven, tenacious, and value hard work whilst having a laugh. We just have a really good sense of humour; we aren’t easily o ended by anything, anyone or each other. We find the light in a lot of things, but aren’t afraid to go into the dark and tackle tough topics as well. Between us, there is no ego, and we just want the best for each other.
“We’ve just had a really successful new live event with a brand-new concept,” Anna adds. “No podcast has ever done this, and we like to be trailblazers in the field. We were one of the first podcasts to tour back in 2020 where we did a national sell out tour, and then sold out the London Palladium four times. We’ve just done our new concept which is more of a party brunch theme called LuAnna: The Big Blow O , which was a sell-out event to several thousand people at The Troxy in East London. We’re looking to bring more of that to people in 2025, so watch this space.”
Given all of this, Anna certainly warrants a little time o over the impending Christmas break. But one of the reasons we approached her for this issue was because the festive season isn’t merry for everyone. “I think over the years we’ve become more aware
A
“I'm pretty traditional when it comes to Christmas”
of people that don’t find Christmas a joyful experience, or as much as many others. I think because we see so much on the TV and in the media of everyone having a jolly time at Christmas, it’s not to be confused that actually there are a hell of a lot of people who find it a very di cult time of year,” she says. “It can be very emotional and a time of reflection, which can be a painful process for a lot of people. I think we have to be really mindful that everybody’s Christmas or festive mood will di er to that of the next person.”
She will be helping plenty through the season, but will have some time o to spend with her family, too. “I love the fact that Christmas ramps up to this big crescendo and then plateaus, and I do love the annual two weeks we get over Christmas and new year. I’m not a massive fan of new year’s, but I do enjoy spending time with family and this year we may be going away which would be nice. For us, it’s always a hectic
time because it’s my daughter’s birthday a couple of days before Christmas, so we have her birthday, we do panto, we do the church nativity, and then it’s Christmas with the family. For me it’s all about family at Christmas time, the more the merrier. I’m a winter fan and I love it. The perfect Christmas for me is having my children, husband and family all around me, eating and being merry. I’m pretty traditional when it comes to Christmas and that’s the way I like it.”
And when it comes to Hertfordshire, there’s plenty that gets her into the spirit as even trailblazers need a little R&R. “Van Hage is always a classic for the Christmas shop, we’re always popping along there. Hertfordshire has some lovely country pubs, and I think country pubs at Christmas are just the perfect place to go, so I will be frequenting many of them throughout the Christmas period.”

Cirque du Soleil’s latest production is a stunning mix of spectacle and fantasy
orteo, one of Cirque du Soelil’s most enchanting productions, is set to open at London’s famed Royal Albert Hall in January 2025. A wholly unique production with a stage that splits the venue into two halves, the show first premiered in Montreal in April 2005, and has since amazed over 11 million spectators, in 22 countries, on four continents. Corteo will be presented at the Royal Albert Hall from 9th January. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.
The clown’s dreamlike imagination pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

REMEMBER YEAR TO
Why 2024 was one of community and celebration in Hatfield
Town Centre
Hatfield Town Centre has had a remarkable year, transforming into a vibrant hub filled with markets, cultural festivals, and family-friendly events. These activities have brought the community together, drawing locals and visitors alike to celebrate the diversity, creativity, and spirit of Hatfield. With the holiday season approaching and the much-anticipated Christmas Lights Switch-On just around the corner, here’s a look back at a year filled with excitement. One of the biggest highlights has been Hatfield’s enhanced market scene, which now includes specialty markets alongside the regular general market held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. On the first Saturday of each month, the Farmers & Craft Market has o ered a wonderful selection of fresh, locally sourced produce and artisan goods. From vegetables and farm-fresh eggs to handcrafted items, this market has been a great way for residents to support local producers while picking up unique items.
Adding to the town’s market lineup, the Vintage & Preloved Market, held on the last Saturday of each month, has attracted eco-conscious shoppers and vintage
enthusiasts. With a selection of preloved clothing and retro collectibles, this market has become a go-to for those looking for sustainable, one-of-a-kind finds. Hatfield also introduced the Asian Specialty Market, o ering a range of unique deliciously prepared foods from various Asian cuisines. The year’s calendar also featured two cultural celebrations that brought vibrancy to Hatfield Town Centre. In early October, the Romanian Harvest Festival celebrated Romanian heritage with traditional music, food, and dance, inviting the community to experience the warmth and richness of Romanian culture. Then, later that month, Hatfield celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, with bright decorations, Indian sweets, and a joyous spirit that spread through the town centre. These festivals provided opportunities to share in the traditions of Hatfield’s diverse community, allowing residents to learn about and participate in cultural celebrations that make the town unique. Hatfield Town Centre also hosted a series of family-oriented events that attracted families from across Welwyn, Hatfield and beyond. The first Pokémon event brought Pokémon fans of all ages together for a day of card trading, games, and themed activities.
Complementing these events and markets were free arts and crafts and face painting, allowing children to get creative and transform into their favourite characters, adding a colourful and festive feel to the town centre, making Hatfield a go-to destination for families looking for a memorable day out.
Hatfield Town Centre is now preparing for the Christmas Lights Switch-On. Taking place on Saturday 23rd November, this event will kick o the holiday season, with festive lights illuminating the town centre and creating a magical winter atmosphere. Local businesses and market traders will join in the celebration, with windows and stalls decorated.
Reflecting on a year filled with successful events, Hatfield Town Centre has proven itself to be a welcoming, vibrant place for community, culture, and celebration. Each event has fostered a spirit of togetherness and made the town a lively destination for all. With a full calendar being prepared for 2025, residents and visitors can look forward to even more memorable experiences in Hatfield Town Centre, where community connections and festive fun are always at the heart of every gathering.

A COLOURFUL
JOURNEY
Acclaimed interior designer Lucinda Sanford takes Absolutely behind the scenes of a unique project, Greenaway in St Albans
Q What was the original brief for Greenaway?
A The house had been lived in for some time by one family, it was in a real need of updating on a practical and aesthetic level. While the client wanted to modernise the house, the objective was to still make its new interiors feel at ease with the 1930s architecture. It’s a very hard balance often with houses of these period as often they can feel “ageing” and young families are nervous that they will always feel like they are living at their Grandparents. Equally, trying to make the houses very contemporary is a struggle and it doesn’t sit comfortably with the windows, ceiling heights and design.
Q Do you often work in Hertfordshire? What was lovely about taking on this St Albans project?
A We do work in the area, and I really enjoy working here. It is a part of the business we would love to grow. The houses are all very interesting and often have their own nuances and features that we can really make the most of. The clients were really lovely to work with, they were always responsive to the ideas and concepts. Also they were interested in design and so brought interesting things and ideas to the table too.
Q Did you have any challenges to overcome with the Greenaway project?
A Nobody believed my vision that we could turn the whole staircase and create the hallway as it is now formed. Sometimes a drawing is just not enough to explain an imagination and thought.
The yellow bedroom and bathroom were both brand new and I know the clients were worried about losing the light into the hallway and I think they were worried the planners would be behind the first floor addition. All in all it worked so well and feels so natural to the house.
Q What was your starting point with the project?
A Really what the family wanted – that’s the key to listen to what a family needs. For some people formal living is important, for others not, if a family love to be outside or inside, cook or be cooked for. It’s also often not what they say, but what they don’t say that tells you a lot. When we learnt about how they wanted to use the house then this was the starting point. The clients love hosting and therefore the dining room was going to be key for a full house at Christmas, and the potential of overflow in other rooms.
Q Are there elements of the project that really highlight what Lucinda Sanford Design is all about?
A I like to think the use of the space, but there were less compromises here to be made as the house had plenty of space. Really the feeling of warmth and colour. Each room is interesting and while they are all different, they also pick up similar characteristics and share some underlying tones so you don’t feel the house is erratic as you walk from room to room, which can happen where you use different colours.
Q We love the colours – were there specific ideas behind what was used?
A The pink hallway was a real stretch when first presented. It was so hard to find the perfect colour
that isn’t too sweet and also isn’t too dull. I love the small scale Veere Grenney paper all over the hallway, there are a lot of walls to just be painted and wallpaper adds some details – but we didn’t want it to be overwhelming or large scale because of the proportions of the house. This small pattern really is soft on the eye, but interesting to cover the space.
Q Are there any subtle design touches we may not notice that you loved implementing?
A The access to the master suite was very insignificant and structurally we were limited. It was important to make sure that the three rooms felt connected, but private. The introduction of the new arch door from the hallway and the second arch into the bedroom is small, but gives the gravitas of entering the main suite.
The connection of the study to the drawing room via the jib door – while not unusual is always so great to do in a house. We had to make this room accessed from the hallway due to the new staircase swing, but it’s actually so nice that a room that otherwise can be forgotten a lot is walked through and the owner looks into it while working from home.
Q The kitchen looks stunning – how did you approach that?
A The house was always large on the ground floor, but we did need to extend the kitchen, which became a little complicated due to some constraints as the house is in the green belt. We managed to secure the planning and then we worked backwards really – it starts with the appliances, eating space and then the rest can fall in. There was an original Aga
which the owner wanted to restore and reinstall, so we did this and it became the centre. We created a breast effect for this cooking run so that the wall wasn’t too flat and the cooking couldn’t be viewed from the hall. I do like countertops ending at walls, not just stopping midflow.
Q Do you have a favourite room from the project?
A The kitchen is very impressive and so spacious. I have to say though I just love the staircase, it really feels like an achievement for us and it sits so nicely in the house. Close runner up is the yellow bedroom with the secret door for the bathroom.
Q This interview will appear in our Christmas issue, so will you be having much time off over the festive period – and what’s your perfect Christmas Day?
A Really I just love moving at a slow pace on Christmas Day – everything is late and unrushed, which is such a rare treat. No-one has to go anywhere, be anywhere, call anyone or do anything except for being together and having fun. We are so lucky to be able to do that and really appreciate the time together.

Glad tidings we swim
Winter wellness at home: elevate your well-being with an indoor pool
As winter sets in and the days grow shorter, the urge to retreat into the cosy confines of our homes becomes stronger. The chilly weather can limit outdoor activities; however, this season also presents a unique opportunity to focus on wellness and self-care. What better way to enhance your well-being than with an indoor pool? Transforming your home into a winter wellness retreat can rejuvenate your mind and body, allowing you to embrace the festive season while promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Indoor pools are not merely luxurious amenities but sanctuaries offering numerous health benefits. Regular swimming can provide an excellent cardiovascular workout, improving heart health and boosting circulation. As the temperatures drop, many people may become less active, which can lead to feelings of lethargy and even seasonal depression. An indoor pool allows you to maintain a consistent exercise routine, ensuring you stay physically fit and mentally sharp throughout the winter.
Moreover, the act of swimming itself is a powerful stress reliever. The rhythmic nature of swimming can be meditative, allowing you to clear your mind and focus on the present moment. Immersing yourself in warm water can create a soothing environment that helps to alleviate anxiety and tension, making it an ideal way to unwind after a long day. Consider integrating additional elements into your indoor pool environment to enhance a serene atmosphere that encourages relaxation and rejuvenation. Adding a sauna or steam room can further elevate your self-care experience. These features promote relaxation, detoxification and improved respiratory health.
In addition to the physical and mental benefits, investing in an indoor pool can signifi cantly enhance your quality of life. It offers you the luxury of year-round swimming, free from the constraints of unpredictable weather, providing an oasis of calm away from your busy life in the comfort of your own home.
As the colder months approach, we must rethink how we care for ourselves. By creating a winter wellness retreat at home with an indoor pool, you’re not just enhancing your lifestyle, but investing in your health and happiness. Origin understands the importance of such spaces and is dedicated to bringing your vision to life. Embrace the season and make your indoor pool the centre of your winter wellness journey.

At Studio28, our design approach combines classic design elements with thoughtful functionality. VISION Long term
Studio28 on the art of creating a timeless home
considers the potential changes in your life, from a growing family to new hobbies or working from home. We focus on creating spaces that can adapt to these shifts without needing a complete redesign. By considering how each space might evolve, we’re able to build homes that stand the test of time.
CRAFTSMANSHIP AND QUALITY
Another cornerstone of timeless design is quality. We believe that using well-crafted, durable materials is essential. Quality craftsmanship not only enhances the beauty of a space, but ensures longevity. When selecting materials, we look for those that age gracefully, like natural stone, quality wood, and textured fabrics that gain character over time. By choosing finishes that are both beautiful and enduring, we create homes that improve as the years go by.
Our network of trusted artisans and suppliers share our commitment to quality, ensuring that every piece we select, from furniture to fixtures, is designed to last. By prioritising quality over quantity, we can create spaces that resist the wear and tear of daily life while maintaining their appeal.
A PERSONAL TOUCH
While timeless design avoids fleeting trends, it embraces elements that reflect your personality. That’s why we take the time to understand your tastes, lifestyle, and aspirations. By incorporating personal details, such as heirloom pieces, favourite colours, or unique art, we ensure your home feels like a true extension of you.
FINDING A LASTING BALANCE
Creating a timeless home isn’t about eliminating all trends; it’s about carefully curating the elements that will have staying power. At Studio28, we’re here to guide you through that balance. Our designs bring together classic elements, thoughtful functionality, quality craftsmanship, and a personal touch, ensuring your home remains a place of comfort, beauty, and inspiration for years to come. Ready to start your journey toward a timeless home? Let us help you create a space that will continue to tell your story for years to come.

KEEN TO GO GREEN
How Good Energy can help your sustainability ambitions
Sustainability is at the forefront of people’s minds, and how you heat your home can make a big difference to your own carbon footprint. Good Energy has been helping households to enjoy a greener life for almost a quarter of a century, originally supplying 100 per cent renewable electricity to homes and businesses, but recently expanding into the installation of domestic heat pumps and solar panels too.
They source their power from a UK network of more than 2,000 renewable generators including solar farms, wind turbines and hydroelectric projects. Last year they exported a huge amount of clean energy to the grid – enough to power almost 230,000 average houses for a whole year, preventing the emission of almost 120,000 tonnes of carbon.
One of the best ways for households to cut their carbon emissions and cut costs is to switch to a heat pump. Grants of £7,500 are available, and there are proposals for them to be the default option for all new homes by 2025.
However, a big challenge is the level of misinformation around their
installation and operation. Good Energy commissioned Opinium to survey a sample of South East residents on a wide range of topics around sustainability and found 14 per cent wrongly believe a heat pump is louder than a fridge, ten per cent wrongly believe they only work in newer homes, and eight per cent wrongly believe they don’t work in the cold.
Good Energy is campaigning to combat these myths and show that heat pumps are not loud and can work well in older homes. What’s more, they’re four times as efficient as traditional gas boilers and provide consistent warmth throughout the day.
Most homes have traditionally been heated by oil or gas, but these polluting and expensive fossil fuels are exposed to the volatilities of the international energy markets. Heat pumps use electricity instead – which is increasingly sourced from UK renewable sources –and are therefore the perfect alternative, particularly for off-grid properties with oil or LPG tanks.
Good Energy offers bespoke systems designed around your home, covering new-builds, retrofits and period properties, supported by ten-year warranties and remote monitoring capabilities for long-term reassurance.
Check out the ‘Green home stories’ on their website – featuring customers who have already saved money on their bills – and their ‘ten myths about air source heat pumps busted’. You’ll also find their ‘Meet the Generators’ series of films, which throw the spotlight on their partners across the country who are providing us with truly renewable energy.
Good Energy can support your journey towards a cleaner and greener future. Visit goodenergy.co.uk to find out more

The Outdoor Learning and Small Holding Manager of York House on spending Christmas on the farm
By TARA WARREN
Winter is without doubt the toughest time of the year at our school smallholding. Our animals need extra bedding to ensure they stay warm and the ice in their drinking water needs removing regularly so they can keep hydrated. Daily health checks also become more important with the cold weather bringing an increased risk of illness and disease. However, much preparation for winter is made by the animals themselves and it is fascinating how through natural selection and instinct they have adapted to the climate and seasonal conditions we experience today.
Our smallholding club continues through the winter months with pupils learning how the animals adapt to cope during the cold and wet weather. The school has recently become a release site for hedgehogs on behalf of Pumpkins Wildlife Hospital, so we also need to think about creating spaces for our hedgehogs to hibernate. The pupils have designed useful structures such as bug hotels, which have an area for hedgehogs, and our wild paddock area has designated houses for the hedgehogs to use with bedding inside.
DONKEY DOWNTIME IS NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS
Donkeys are synonymous with the festive season, but donkeys are most certainly not just for Christmas. Our Donkey Downtime sessions continue all year round including during the winter and festive season. Pupils
visit them to enjoy some calming Christmas colouring in the donkey paddock or they might read a Christmas story to them. This quiet period of reflection can be very helpful to our children amidst a busy school day. Our early years’ classes also visit the donkeys to get some visual inspiration and practice their singing of ‘Little Donkey’ before the Christmas performance.
At this time of year, our pupils learn that the animals need to be looked after all year round, no matter the season or weather. Their enclosures still need cleaning and extra feed, such as hay, needs to be provided to our grazing animals when the grass is frosty or snowy to prevent them becoming hungry. The children learn that we need to become self-reliant when choosing the correct clothing to ensure they can support the animals whilst also keeping themselves well and healthy. They learn to
be resilient too: if the animals can manage during the harshest of winter weathers, then so can we. They also learn empathy, putting the animal’s feelings first, ensuring that they are healthy, happy and warm.
FESTIVE LINKS TO FOSTER LEARNING
Our reception pupils enjoy linking the stories they are learning in the classroom to the animals we have in our smallholding. They have recently been on a search for Stickman with the animals providing clues such as “a bird picked me up and dropped me near an animal who keeps saying baa-baa” or “I’m now nearby some eggs”. During winter time our pupils also enjoy retelling the story of the Little Red Hen to our chickens or the story of the Three Billy Goats Gru to our goats. Our nursery children also like to create bird feeders using apples and sunflower seeds and then choose a location to hang them for the birds and squirrels. In the spirit of reducing wastage and spreading festive joy, the Christmas trees that are used to decorate our school are given to our pigs, sheep and goats. This is an excellent way of recycling them, but they are also very nutritious and have a number of health benefits including being a natural de-wormer.
BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE
Caring for the animals during winter helps children to develop many useful skills. For the older pupils they have the opportunity to learn how each animal individually adapts to the seasons. For instance, our sheep have thick woolly coats and even when the top layer is covered in frost, the
under layers are still warm and insulating. They also learn how our pigs understand not to use their wallow during this time of year and to huddle up together in the straw, sharing body heat to keep warm. The pony and donkeys grow winter coats too, adding a layer of warmth, and our donkeys’ dark brown coats can absorb the heat on a sunny winter’s day so our pupils are careful not to brush them while wet as this can move the water and dirt onto their skin, which can make them feel cold. Our chickens moult some of their feathers in late autumn and grow new stronger and warmer ones ready for the winter ahead. Their egg-laying can also lessen due to the reduced hours of sunlight and the change in temperature. Our rabbit, Ronald, grows his winter coat and as a Lionhead Rabbit, he does very well in the cold and can even be spotted grazing in the field in the pouring rain. Finally, our goats have extra bedding put in their shelter and on very cold frosty days, their feed is placed into the shelter. This is because goat hooves are very sensitive to the cold, and it can be uncomfortable for them to walk on frozen ground. Their coats are also not waterproof, so a shelter is essential for them to stay dry and warm. Christmas on the farm is definitely a fascinating and rewarding time for our pupils. They learn so much, from resilience and adaptability to kindness and empathy. There is always much to discover and learn from and our pupils feel incredibly lucky to experience this wonderful time of year and to be part of helping our animals to adapt to the colder months.

It’s good to TALK
The Head of St Margaret’s School in Bushey on leaning into conversations this Christmas
By LARA PECHARD
The pace and online immediacy of modern life is impacting physical conversation. With the Christmas holidays looming, parents will be trying hard to make room for healthy discourse within the family and sometimes, as adults, it can be challenging to manage our own phone habits during the festive season or while at the dinner table, let alone those of our young people. It is therefore no surprise that parents are struggling to ensure positive conversations with their teenagers, which can be tricky at the best of times. As schools, we have a duty to support parents in this ongoing plight. In recent years I have encountered parents who simply cannot lever their child to the dinner table, let alone talk to them there.
For educators, helping parents to develop improved conversations with their children can be problematic. Namely, because the biggest struggle for schools is reversing some of the parent behaviours around phone and device usage. Encouraging parents to redress the balance and to make changes that are reflective of the behaviours they wish to see from their children, means schools must work even more closely with parents and pupils.
During the Christmas holidays, there are three main areas that parents can focus their attention on. The first is around establishing boundaries. We need to be communicating that parents should initiate redlines that are well understood. Perhaps that means everyone comes to the dinner table to eat together and that phones and devices are not permitted at

“CREATING SHARED TIME OR SPECIFIC EXPERIENCES OVER THE HOLIDAYS WILL FACILITATE MORE CONVERSATION”
this time. Or in-keeping with the season, it might be the case that the whole family goes to a place of worship together, or watches a football game, or has tea with a grandparent. Creating shared time or specific experiences over the holidays will naturally facilitate more conversation.
Just as during the school day, if we don’t introduce ‘protected time’ at home, there is far less chance for conversation to flow. Through our assembly schedule we have been encouraging pupils to raise topics that prompt conversations in school and at home. Our weekly pupil-led reflection takes place during a Monday whole-school assembly. It is always based on a topic that
the child believes is important and one they want to start a conversation around. We have sent many of these topics home to parents and they have been well received by the community. One of the most recent topics we covered was about living with dyslexia. Such exercises have encouraged parents and pupils to talk further and to come forward and ask for help. Secondly, routine at home can encourage conversation. Children will often find familiar situations more comfortable, and it is perhaps during these moments that they are more likely to open up about their day or express di culties. I have found that half-termly parenting updates (delivered via our mailings and during parent evenings) as well as parenting events have focused on the topics such as how to talk to your child about friendships or building their independence have encouraged parents to allow their child the commute home to process the day, and not to hit them with lots of high stakes or loaded questions as soon as they greet them.
Encouraging parents to think about using car journeys to cricket practice or time during a dog walk to talk to their child can be helpful. Often, these occasions provide a platform to talk, but in a limited capacity that isn’t always face to face. This can help when dealing with di cult topics or reluctant talkers. Trying to carve out one to one protected time for
one child without their siblings in earshot has proven to be a game changer and, in particular, for the twins in our community. Finally modelling conversation by naming the di culty is a good way to encourage conversation. This is helpful when dealing with more tricky conversations. In this case, as a school we have been encouraging our families to use the rose bud retrospective: what is positive (the rose) and what is challenging or bad (the thorn) and what is growing or is something you are excited about (the bud). Parents have said in a short period of time, dropping this into dinner or bedtime routines can encourage a healthy review of the day, but on the same token, parents have to model this and share a review of their own day.
Listening to our young people is key regardless of the time of year, and schools are continually having to find new ways of leaning into conversations and nurturing pupils to talk more but as ever, keeping up as parents is not easy. The Christmas holidays provide families with more time to be together and nurture connections; and it’s also a time for tolerance, understanding and empathy. Strong pastoral settings in school are providing parents with help on how to navigate this period not only to best encourage, but also to support their children longer term.

THE GREAT ST ALBANS CHALLENGE
Amidst
all the present buying and giving, Christmas is also a time to reflect on helping others - which is why this unique initiative has been a huge success
Hundreds of people of all ages packed out the streets last month for the debut of The Great St Albans Challenge. The charity GPS treasure hunt, organised by local events company Wildgoose, hopes to become an annual event and saw over 85 teams taking part and has raised over £7,700 for local counselling charity Youth Talk so far. Participants of all ages took part describing it as a “roaring success” and “the best day in ages” with many saying they had “learnt so much about our wonderful city”. Teams dashed through the streets tackling challenges, cracking clues and racking up points with the Loot Legends being crowned as The Great St Albans Challenge Champions at the final presentation at St Albans Cathedral.
In a parallel running Explorer Scout competition the winning Scout team, Heartwood X, said they had really enjoyed the fun afternoon adventure. Both teams were presented with their prizes by local Olympian Phoebe Gill and the High Sheri of Hertfordshire, Annie Brewster.
Operations Director and founder of the event, Peter Barker from Wildgoose, said: “What a day it was! We were delighted to be able to create this event to support such a worthy local cause. St Albans is full of such great people who have a heart for charity and real fun-loving spirits. The combination of a great day out and raising funds for Youth Talk injected such a feel-good factor into the fundraising GPS treasure hunt.”
Oli Parkes from winning team the Loot Legends added: “Thank you to the organisers for the event raising money for a great cause. We had a lot of fun, even if it did mean getting
out of our comfort zone on occasions! We hope everyone else had a great time also, and well done to everyone taking part.”
Chief Executive of Youth Talk, David Barker, commented: “A huge thank you to Peter and the Wildgoose team for making it all possible – and to our amazing team of volunteers who helped in the smooth running of the event on the day. Youth Talk provides vital free confidential counselling to young people aged 13-25 across the District and the funds raised will mean that we will be able to deliver 154 more counselling sessions to local young people who are struggling. Thank you and congratulations to everybody involved – bring on next year!”
The event raised over £7,700 through ticket sales and sponsorship by local businesses. Richard Marrett, Centre Manager at The Maltings who were headline sponsors said: “It was truly inspiring to see hundreds of people racing around our beautiful city, having lots of fun and all while raising thousands of pounds for Youth Talk. As part of our commitment to support the local community, The Maltings was delighted to sponsor The Great St Albans Challenge and we’re thrilled that the event was a huge success. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
