January issue highlights

One of my earliest gigs in journalism was covering the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Natural History Museum in London. Being a nature lover myself, I couldn't get enough of the visuals and stories behind them, and the love affair for that event has continued ever since.

Moving into Hertfordshire territory, I was of course delighted to learn of a sister Natural History Museum site in Tring, and this month the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition comes to town. There are some extraordinary images in there, from photographers as young as 10 or 11, and truly shows the sheer power of nature.

5

At this time of the year – where we all look to make fresh starts – I suggest you dig a little deeper into the wildlife around you (if you don't already) and do your bit to look after the wonderful habitats around us. We also have a special focus on Ark Wildlife on page 82, which outlines exactly what you can do to help local wildlife during the winter months. It will make you feel good about yourself.

Of course, we also look at other ways to improve mental health in our well-being special, but here's hoping whatever you are aiming for, 2025 is a happy one.

The Persian Comedy Powerhouse brings his brand-new show Namaste to Hertfordshire at the start of 2025. Music24, a leading community music charity transforming lives throughout Hertfordshire, has recorded a three track EP at Abbey Road Studios in a bid to raise awareness of the ‘ability in disability’.

The charity, which has supported socially isolated and vulnerable adults for the last ten years, made dreams come true when it embarked on a project to write and record an original song at the iconic studio in North London. Representatives supported by the charity’s Learning Disabilities, Dementia and Mental Health groups, joined sta and volunteers, partners, carers and parents, to bring the idea to reality. Their song, ‘Sing Together’, was developed with the charity’s service users in mind and depicts the experience participants enjoy within live music sessions.

Celebrating the charity’s 10th anniversary earlier this year, Music24 CEO and co-founder, Teela HughesDavis, explains: “I knew that reaching our 10th anniversary was a huge achievement for our team who go above and beyond to bring music and happiness to people’s lives every day. Creating and recording this song was a way in which we could celebrate what we do and why we do it.”

The three track EP also includes the Choir’s version of ‘Three Little Birds’ originally by Bob Marley and the Wailers, which is a song of hope and a firm favourite in Music24 sessions.

Wild TIMES

Want to get in touch with nature in 2025? Well, here’s where to start as the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year comes to Tring

Highlights from the world’s most prestigious nature photography exhibition has opened at the Natural History Museum at Tring. Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year features 15 of the winning images that showcase the wonder and richness of biodiversity on our planet. In many cases, the images shine a light on the numerous challenges wildlife across the globe faces today.

Claire Walsh, Interpretation and Exhibitions Manager at the Natural History Museum at Tring, says: “Wildlife Photographer of the Year is in its 60th year. At Tring we are showcasing the outstanding talent of today’s generation of young photographers who provide fresh perspectives that speak to their hope for the future.”

The selection displayed on light boxes includes all photos awarded in the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2024 competition, which includes the categories: 10 Years and Under, 11-14 Years, 15-17 Years and new for this year, The Young Impact Award winner.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Wildlife Photographer of the Year, and in line with the Museum’s vision of a future where both people and planet thrive, the competition introduced the Impact Award for both the Adult and Young competitions. This award

recognises a conservation success; a story of hope and/or positive change. A video sharing behind-the-scenes footage of the young photographer winner of this category will be on display.

This year’s two Grand Title winners, also with short films telling their inspiring backstories, will also be on display at Tring. The winning images were selected from 59,228 entries from 117 countries and territories by an independent panel of experts. In an intensive process, each entry was judged anonymously on its originality, narrative, technical excellence, and ethical practice. Here, Absolutely picks out some of our personal highlights, with the backstory behind each image.

Until 27 April. The Natural History Museum at Tring, The Walter Rothschild Building, Akeman Street, Tring, HP23 6AP nhm.ac.uk/visit/tring.html

AN EVENING MEAL BY PARHAM POURAHMAD, USA WINNER, 11-14 YEARS Parham Pourahmad watches as the last rays of the setting sun illuminate a young Cooper’s hawk eating a squirrel. Over a single summer, Parham visited Ed R Levin County Park most weekends to take photographs. He wanted to showcase the variety of wildlife living within a busy metropolitan city, and to illustrate that ‘nature will always be wild and unpredictable’.

BUTTERFLY SYMMETRY BY SASHA JUMANCA, GERMANY/ROMANIA HIGHLY COMMENDED, 10 YEARS AND UNDER Sasha Jumanca emphasises the symmetry of the wings of two silver-studded blue butterflies. It surprised Sasha how many butterflies were ‘dancing in the air from one flower to the next’ in the moorland he was exploring. Spotting this mating pair, he set about ‘creating the impression of a new butterfly formed from the two’.

FREE AS A BIRD BY ALBERTO ROMÁN GÓMEZ, SPAIN WINNER, 10 YEARS AND UNDER Alberto Román Gómez contrasts a delicate stonechat bird with a hefty chain. Watching from the window of his father’s car at the edge of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, Alberto found this young bird tricky to photograph as it was quickly flying back and forth, gathering insects.

DOUBLE HELPING BY LORYANTOINE CANTIN, CANADA HIGHLY COMMENDED, 11–14 YEARS

L ory-Antoine Cantin spots this red fox approaching the roadside with prey grasped securely between its jaws. When this fox noticed LoryAntoine poised with his camera and long lens, it dropped its precious catch, so Lory-Antoine quietly kept his distance to give it some space. It soon returned to pick up the animals and continued on its way.

THE CLEVER CUTTLEFISH BY ORIOL CHIAS DIEZ, SPAIN RUNNER-UP, 11-14 YEARS

Oriol Chias Diez watches a common cuttlefish raising two of its arms while swimming among the seagrass. Oriol had been observing the cuttlefish for more than an hour and was fascinated by its ability to change colour and shape at will. On one occasion it even disguised its arms as swaying leaves of seagrass.

“Pub in the Park is one of the most popular events in St Albans”

PRaise a GLASS

The dates and music acts have been announced for 2025's Pub in the Park as it returns to St Albans

ub in the Park, the UK’s leading food and music festival curated by celebrity chef Tom Kerridge, has announced epic headliner music acts for the St Albans festival next year and confirmed the dates for the Hertfordshire event as 5th-7th September.

The festival, which is returning to St Albans' Verulamium Park for a sixth year, has announced the Friday night will see five times UK number 1 artist Dizzee Rascal take to the stage, following an electrifying DJ set from Gok Wan. Saturday evening will see the incredible Ministry of Sound Classical bringing a full orchestra on stage to perform club classics, and a DJ set from the iconic Judge Jules. And the legendary British band Squeeze, who had massive hits throughout the late ‘70s, the ‘80s and the ‘90s, will make the lazy Sunday session an unforgettable experience.

And, for the first time, festival-goers can get up close and personal to the musical icons by paying for a pit pass –which upgrades a ticket to get into the pit area, directly in front of the stage. There are also new premium tickets available and the option to buy a 'table upgrade', which reserves a table for up to six people in a private enclosure, with welcome drinks on arrival.

Pub in the Park is one of the most popular events in the St Albans calendar, with a whopping 15,000+ party-goers attending the festival last year. There will be further announcements about more chart-topping and feelgood acts in the next few weeks and months, but of course Pub in the Park is also renowned for its world class food and beverage o ering. Pubs, restaurants, and chefs

from across the UK, including St Albans itself, will be cooking up a range of small plates inspired by their personal career journeys and restaurants. The chefs and restaurants coming to St Albans for 2025 are yet to be announced – but watch this space for details.

Pub in the Park is the brainchild of Tom Kerridge and celebrates everything there is to love about the glorious British pub: stunning, world-class food, awardwinning chefs, exhilarating live music, delicious drinks, but above all else a fantastic time with friends and family.

Dr Nyla Raja looks into the aesthetics trends we can expect to see in 2025

Ahighly respected and much sought after skin specialist and cosmetic dermatology GP, Dr Nyla Raja has practiced medicine for over 20 years and has personally delivered over 200,000 treatments with exceptional results. Trusted by television personalities, well-known celebrity figures and some of the UK’s most familiar faces, she is considered to be one of the top cosmetic doctors in the country. Here she gives her insight into the top skincare and aesthetics trends to watch in 2025.

Dr Nyla says: “As we move into 2025, the world of aesthetics and skincare will continue to evolve. It’s not just about the aesthetic outcome anymore, but a holistic approach to maintaining skin health and longevity. Patients are looking for advanced, non-invasive treatments that enhance natural beauty and focus on long-term skin wellness. Below are some of the biggest trends in 2025.”

UNDETECTABLE BEAUTY

2025 will be all about 'undetectable beauty', where aesthetic treatments enhance your natural features without being visibly noticeable. The desire for subtle, natural-looking enhancements is at an all-time high. Patients are increasingly leaning towards procedures that deliver natural, 'undetectable' results. They want to look refreshed, not altered.Microlifting, skin tightening treatments, and injectables will focus on enhancing natural contours and improving skin tone.

DR NYLA RAJA

PREVENTATIVE AESTHETICS

Younger generations are increasingly focused on 'prejuvenation' – preventing the signs of ageing before they occur. Patients are looking for preventative treatments that preserve skin firmness and delay signs of ageing, without the need for more invasive interventions later on. Light peels, laser facials, and microinjectables will become key treatments.

ADVANCED SKIN TIGHTENING AND FIRMING

We’re seeing incredible advancements in skintightening technologies. These treatments o er non-invasive, long-lasting solutions that help patients achieve firmer, more youthful skin without downtime. Treatments like our bespoke Transformation Facelift™ use advanced technologies to target deeper layers of the skin, lifting and firming without the need for invasive surgery. In just a few sessions, we can help restore volume and improve skin texture, leaving you with a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Additionally, our Transformation Bodylift targets stubborn fat in specific areas, to contour and reshape the body and build muscle for men and women. The treatment program combines di erent technologies bespoke to individual needs,

and leaves patients feeling empowered, sculpted, and ready to step out with confidence. The images below show one recent case study with fabulous results. Using a variety of innovative technologies, Tone & Tite therapy addresses all five key causes of cellulite. By combining radiofrequency and acoustic wave technology, the treatment plan works on both the superficial and deeper layers of the skin to improve tone and texture, delivering long-lasting results without downtime.

“As we head into 2025, there is a focus on a holistic approach to maintaining skin health and longevity”

Flexible OUTLOOK

Absolutely meets Eloise Skinner to discuss an eclectic career that takes in modelling and mentoring, via yoga and Pilates

Eloise Skinner is an author, existential therapist, teacher, model, and the founder of two businesses: The Purpose Workshop and One Typical Day. A burning passion to learn new things was sparked at school in Hertfordshire, and she went on to work in corporate law, spent a year in a monastic community, and now focus on existentialism, education and social mobility. Here, she tells Absolutely all about it.

Q It’s di cult to know where to start with your career Eloise as it covers so many di erent fields. When you were at school in Hertfordshire, were you always a student who took an interest in di erent things?

A Yes, I think I’ve always had a wide range of interests. My parents really encouraged me (and my brother) to try a bit of everything, so I grew up trying di erent sports, dance, music, theatre and other activities.

Q When you started working in corporate law, were you already dabbling in other areas too?

A The pattern definitely continued during my corporate law years. When I first started training as a lawyer, I was fully focused on law – but after a while, I started to really enjoy teaching and writing as part of my legal career. That led to hosting podcasts and writing articles for industry publications – and, eventually, led to my first book! I also did my yoga teacher training during annual leave from my work as a lawyer.

Q Have you always been aware of fitness and mindfulness, or did a particular moment in your life inspire you to learn more about them?

A Fitness has definitely been a part of my life since I can remember – when living in Hertfordshire, I swam for the local team (in Letchworth) and took dance classes in Hitchin. But the meditation / mindfulness element wasn’t something I discovered

until I was working in corporate law in London. I was interested in ways to find focus and balance in the context of a busy career, and meditation practice was a really interesting path for me. I’ve continued to have some elements of mindfulness and meditation throughout my career change, and I still practice meditation today.

Q What are you now qualified to teach when it comes to fitness?

A Yoga and Pilates are my main qualifications, although I’m also qualified in some other disciplines like contortion (deep stretching!), ballet technique and mindfulness.

Q How has the modelling side to your career fitted in with this?

A Modelling has been something I’ve done occasionally over the years – as a side career and a personal interest. Now that I’m self-employed, I’ve been able to lean more into this career (it really requires a high degree of flexibility and late-notice

scheduling!), and now I see it as an important part of my working life. I find that modelling allows for a degree of artistic and creative freedom that I don’t always find in other elements of my work.

Q Why have you become involved in teaching and mentoring too?

A I’ve been involved in teaching for decades – my parents are both teachers, and I think the passion was passed down. At school in Hertfordshire, I was involved in teaching piano to younger students, and in corporate law, I was involved in running training sessions for junior lawyers. Mentoring is so important as well – I think a lot of people find a sense of meaning and purpose through mentoring others, and the person being mentored benefits hugely. It’s so important to have role models to aspire to in any career, and mentoring can really help in building this kind of network.

Q When did you launch One Typical Day and The Purpose Workshop, and what do you o er with both?

A The Purpose Workshop was launched in 2021, and this is where I do much of my psychotherapy work, as well as providing meaning-driven consultancy services to businesses. The Purpose Workshop also o ers purpose-finding workshops to schools and charities, working on a social enterprise model. One Typical Day began in 2022, as a way to help young people find their first careers. This project is still in development, but works closely alongside organisations like the Careers & Enterprise Company to build up a range of resources (which will eventually be accessible to schools and young people directly).

“Community fitness is a growing trend”

Q How on earth do you juggle all these di erent facets of your career?!

A I try to take one step at a time, and focus on the task at hand. Staying organised is really important – to know what needs to be done in the moment, and to try not to get distracted by other things. The other thing that helps is just to keep going(!), which sounds obvious, but I think it’s easy to underestimate how much you can really achieve if you stay consistent working towards goals over time. Nearly all of my current projects are things I’ve been working on over many years.

Q As we head into 2025, what kind of fitness trends are you expecting to see?

A I think community fitness is a growing trend – we know from research that community ties are fundamental to our mental health, and community fitness brings an opportunity to combine this with our mental and physical health as well. I’d say we’ll see more run clubs, local sports teams, group fitness challenges and fitness-based events happening in 2025.

Q Mental health is a particularly hot topic right now, so what tips would you o er to anyone who is feeling the strain right now?

A I’d recommend taking some time to reflect on your life – on how you feel, on how things are going in your career,

relationships, finances, and so on. This kind of processing time – possibly using a tool like journaling, meditation, therapy or chatting with friends and family – can help you to find some clarity around your goals, motivations and emotions. Sometimes a feeling of burnout, exhaustion or stress can arise from an inability to identify the factors at play, so taking some time to really assess those – as truthfully as possible! – can give us a great foundation to make lasting, beneficial changes to our lives.

Q Do you see your own career heading in a certain direction in 2025?

A It’s hard to know – self-employment is always exciting, since you can take new opportunities you never would have imagined. I hope to be doing some of the same – therapy, writing, podcasting, modelling, teaching – but I’m also open to some unexpected things.

A BIG OBSTACLE

Tackling obesity: Dr Suhail Hussain on a holistic approach to better health

The UK’s Better Health campaign, launched in January 2022, sought to shine a spotlight on lifestyle choices that profoundly a ect our health. Among the central themes was the need to address obesity, a crisis that continues to cast a long shadow over public health. With nearly two-thirds of adults in England overweight or obese, the campaign couldn’t have come at a more pressing time. Obesity is not merely an aesthetic issue; it is a complex condition that significantly increases the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and stroke. The causes of obesity are multifaceted. Poor diet – characterised by excessive consumption of high-calorie, processed foods – plays a central role. Sedentary lifestyles, often exacerbated by long working

fail to address the root causes of weight gain and often falter within weeks.

This is where a holistic, personalised approach can make all the di erence.

I am proud to introduce a new antiobesity service designed to address these challenges head-on. Combining medical oversight, nutritional expertise, and tailored fitness plans, this service brings together three critical elements: medical insights from me as your primary care physician, bespoke dietary guidance from a professional nutritionist, and structured physical training from a personal trainer. Together, we create sustainable plans grounded in science and practicality, o ering continuous support and regular follow-ups to keep individuals on track.

Unlike fleeting resolutions, this service is built on accountability and adaptability. It recognises that weight management is not a one-size-fits-all journey and that genuine transformation requires a coordinated e ort. By addressing the underlying causes of obesity and fostering lasting behavioural change, we aim to empower individuals to take control of their health for good.

hours and increased screen time, contribute further. Additionally, stress, inadequate sleep, and even socioeconomic factors can compound the problem, making weight management a herculean task for many. Yet, combating obesity is achievable through informed, consistent action. Education is key, particularly around nutrition and portion control. Increasing physical activity – whether through structured exercise or integrating movement into daily routines – is another cornerstone. Supportive environments, accountability, and personalised strategies are equally critical in ensuring lasting change. However, one of the pitfalls of traditional approaches is the tendency to rely on short-lived resolutions, especially around the New Year. While well-intentioned, these resolutions are often born of impulse rather than a concrete plan. Without accountability or expert guidance, they

The fight against obesity is not just about losing weight – it’s about reclaiming lives, preventing disease, and paving the way for a healthier, more fulfilling future. Together, we can make lasting change a reality.

RECOVER &RECHARGE

Carly Glendinning meets Forrest Smith, CEO and co-founder of Kineon, a biotech company revolutionising fitness recovery

Q Why is sports recovery as essential as the training itself?

A Sports recovery is just as important as training because that’s when the body actually gets stronger. Workouts break down muscle fibres, and recovery is what allows them to rebuild, becoming more resilient. Training can also trigger inflammation, central nervous system overload, and injuries. By improving recovery we amplify our outcomes, and without it, we risk burnout and injuries, which can sideline us.

E ective, optimised recovery makes training sustainable.

Q How do lifestyle factors impact recovery?

A Recovery isn’t just about the workout; it’s a full-body experience – sleep, diet, and mental health play massive roles. Sleep is crucial

for repair: muscles recover, cells regenerate, and the brain recharges. A balanced diet provides essential nutrients for healing. And mental wellbeing can’t be overlooked, as high stress can slow recovery. In my experience, addressing these factors together is key to e ective recovery. For many of the world-class athletes we work with, the ‘bottleneck’ for their training isn’t how much work they can do, it is how they manage their stress loads and recovery.

Q How has technology transformed the world of sports recovery?

A Technology is revolutionising sports recovery, providing athletes with tools to enhance healing and performance. For example, red light therapy supports the

body’s natural recovery by penetrating deep into muscles and joints, helping boost ATP production, which powers cell repair. Devices like our MOVE+ Pro combine red and infrared light with advanced LED and laser technology to target these tissues e ectively. Additionally, pairing red light therapy with methods like blood flow restriction (BFR) training and PlateletRich Plasma (PRP) therapy is yielding powerful results, further optimising recovery. With the MOVE+ Pro, athletes now have access to clinical-level recovery tools used by the pros at home, empowering them to take control of their routines and reach peak performance faster.

Winter WELLNESS

Where to position your bed for the perfect slumber during winter (with a touch of Feng Shui)

Did you know that where you position your bed during winter could actually be the key to getting a good night’s sleep?

The ancient practice of Feng Shui, which emphasises harmony between your living space and energy flow, can help you create a more balanced and restful bedroom, especially in winter.

Sleep tech firm Simba has teamed up with Lisa Artis of The Sleep Charity to share expert tips on how to enhance your bedroom’s layout to promote warmth, comfort, and restful slumber during winter – with some Feng Shui tips to invite positive energy (Chi) into your sleep space.

Steer clear of cold draughts

Cold draughts from windows or doors can disrupt sleep, so avoid placing your bed directly in their path. In Feng Shui, positioning your bed in the Command Position – where you can see the door but are not directly aligned with it – encourages energy flow. A room temperature of 16–19°C is optimal for sleep, but cold spots can disturb your body’s thermal balance.

Stay cosy with a strategic heat source

Feng Shui recommends keeping balance by avoiding direct alignment with heat sources, which can cause overheating and restlessness. Position your bed a comfortable distance from radiators, allowing warmth to spread evenly without making you too hot.

Avoid exterior walls

Exterior walls are often colder. For better insulation and comfort, position your bed against an interior wall to help maintain an optimal sleep environment.

Wake up with natural light

Winter days are short, and we often wake up in darkness, which can leave

us feeling groggy and out of sync. While the temptation to hibernate is strong, getting some early morning light is vital for regulating your sleep-wake cycle and banishing the winter blues. Plus, it helps to improve alertness and reduces symptoms of Seasonal A ective Disorder (SAD).

Create a snug, cocooned feeling

In winter, the desire to feel safe, warm, and cocooned intensifies. Your bedroom should be a place to escape the cold, dark world outside. For an extra comforting sleep environment, think about placing your bed in a corner.

Layer up with rugs

Hardwood and tile floors may look chic, but in winter they can feel like stepping onto

a sheet of ice. Combat the cold underfoot by layering a thick, luxurious rug under or near your bed. Not only will it add an extra layer of warmth, but it also softens the room, making it the perfect place for sleepy feet to land in the morning.

Dim the lights, block the glare Invest in blackout curtains or blinds. Consider bedside lamps to create a gentle, sleep-friendly atmosphere. A dark room can help regulate melatonin, the hormone responsible for a restful night’s sleep. By aligning your bed placement with Feng Shui principles, you’ll invite a restful, balanced energy that nourishes your body and mind through the coldest months of the year.

Art collector and design concierge founder, Hannah Tsurkan, reveals the artists set to be big in the home and beyond in 2025

Hannah Tsurkan is founder of Agora Project Management, an end-to-end luxury construction and development company that doesn’t just build beautiful, mindful properties from the ground up across the UK – it also sources rare works of art, vintage furniture, and exquisite sculptures for its clients as part of its premium interior design concierge.

Alongside its design partners, Agora Project Management has sourced a wide array of works, from Francis Bacon and Jackson Pollock to Fernando Botero and Rothko, as well as rare works by the Albers (from both Anni and Josef). The company also regularly sources mid-century pieces

for the home and decorative final touches –even some very rare handbags for clients.

Having come from an artistic background herself, Hannah has a keen and trained eye for even the smallest of details, and she’s never far away from an auction house, gallery, or art exhibition. She is also a collector herself. Hannah says: “Art isn’t just a finishing touch, it’s the core of a room; a focal point that makes you feel something every time you look at it, as well as in most occasions centre of your whole design. Investing in art is about more than just immediate aesthetic appeal, it’s about finding something timeless that will inspire and enrich your life for years to come, while also increasing in financial value.” Over the page, Hannah writes about some of the artists and sculptors that UHNW clients are investing in right now.

VICTOR GUEDY

When I met Victor, we had an immediate connection, rooted in our shared passion for artistry. Coming from a jeweller’s bench since the age of five, I understood his dedication to craftsmanship and the meticulous touch that defines his work.

Victor Guedy started o by learning stone carving, before working with big names in architecture, art, and design, such as Joseph Dirand, Harumi Klossowska de Rola, and Raphael Navot. Now, an artist and sculptor in his own right, he’s making waves himself, especially in Paris.

Victor’s sculptures are minimalist, almost

“MARK DARGAS IS SINGLE HANDEDLY REDEFINING PORTRAITURE”

futuristic; raw but elegant, creating a unique tension between material and movement. One of my favourite pieces from Guedy is Random Vanitas III: Bananas – it’s made of rough bronze, again, elegant but raw; not too polished. His pieces look great in any style of room – whether minimalist, industrial, Scandi, art deco, or traditional.

MARK DARGAS

While Mark Dargas is not a brand-new artist, his work is absolutely extraordinary – he’s single handedly redefining portraiture with paintings that almost seem to breathe, they’re so realistic. Mark’s attention to detail means he’s able to capture the subtle emotions and nuances of his subjects in a way that feels deeply personal; it almost feels as though you’re looking at a photograph. His honey series has been my absolute favourite.

DIM ATELIER

Vladimir Slavov’s atelier is a sanctuary for artistic exploration, I always get lost in there for hours. In his work he explores the complex relationship between light, shapes and their reflections, and the impact these things have on their environment. Slavov mainly creates beautiful lighting pieces, but they truly are works of art – and they’ve found many a home in our interior designers’ creations.

TUNJI ADENIYI-JONES

Tunji’s work is an explosion of colour, with vibrant, elongated figures dancing across the canvas, creating a semblance of rhythm and energy that’s contagious. His paintings are truly alive, and there’s a vibrancy that you can’t look away from. Tunji is fast becoming a favourite with collectors who value bright colours and cultural influences. His work is deeply inspired by his West African heritage.

“I

CAN STARE AT GEORGE ROUY’S WORK FOR HOURS”

SIGRID LUITSALU

Sigrid Luitsalu is an Estonian glass artist based in Tallinn. Luitsalu’s work explores patterns found in nature and the human psyche, drawing inspiration from the continuous transformation and growth inherent in both.

In 2020, she established her own glass studio, where she o ers glass courses and creative coaching. Her recent solo exhibition, “Inner Patterns of Repetition”, held at HOP Gallery, Tallinn, in 2023, delved into the complexities of repetition and di erence, featuring delicate glass objects crafted using the pâte de verre technique. This technique became popular again during the Art Nouveau period, predominately in France, with artists such as Gabriel Argy-Rousseau, Henry and Jean Cros and Emile Gallé among others fine honing the technique.

A particularly fragile piece reminds me of sour fruit gummies, fragility, and freshly laid snow – you know where you go into the woods on a sunny day, with blue skies, and it’s crispy underfoot. Beautiful and nostalgic.

SOUGWEN CHUNG

I discovered Chung fairly recently, and it’s a bit of a di erent one for me, as I myself have written articles about not relying too heavily on technology or going too far down the AI rabbit hole. However, you can’t deny that Chung’s work is striking, and I’ve found there’s a growing wave of collectors who are looking for the next best thing; something exciting and innovative, not just oil on canvas. Sougwen merges human creativity with machine learning, using robotic systems to produce intricate, ethereal drawings that explore the evolving relationship between humans and machines. While this may feel rather dystopian to some, I think there is

some beauty in this – plus, her shows remind me of the 1999 Alexander McQueen show.

MINJUNG KIM

Speaking of South Korean artists, an artist a few of my clients have directed me to recently (usually it’s the other way around!) is Minjung Kim. I actually saw ‘Traces, 2024’ in this year’s Unlimited section at Art Basel, and immediately felt drawn to it – it’s a large-scale piece that is a captivating exploration of material and repetition.

Minjung Kim innovates using Hanji paper, traditionally limited to two metres in length to create unmonumental tryptic – this works together to form a continuous landscape, reflecting on physicality, breath, and a passage of time. Her work is worth checking out, she’s at several prominent galleries around the world including Almine Rech, Leslie Sacks Gallery, Gallery Hyundai, Patrick Hyde Contemporary Art, and Galerie Volker Diehl.

GEORGE ROUY

George Rouy creates surreal, distorted figures that challenge traditional representations of the human body. For his latest series, BODYSUIT, he actually worked with a choreographer to ensure he got the movement right – I find you can stare at his works for hours. George really pushes the boundaries of figurative painting, and his bold, provocative style has started to attract a following of collectors who love to be questioned by what’s in front of them. I adore his work.

CAMILLE HANNAH

Camille has become really popular with collectors over the last five years or so. She uses oil on convex aluminium surfaces, creating 3D works that are as much about texture, as they are about visual form – they’re almost liquid-like. Camille’s works are great for modern, minimalist or industrial spaces as they almost jump out at you from a pale wall.

PAULINE ROY GRAVURES

I came to know of Pauline Roy when visiting the 2024 Collectible Fair in Brussels, her pieces have been very popular because of the sheer level of detail. To me, her work speaks for itself – she creates great modern-day pieces that will e ortlessly enhance any interior, whether it’s a private home or a commercial space. They’re very versatile pieces – they literally fit anywhere, and they will last a lifetime. There’s a delicate balance between texture and transparency in her work, and her mastery of sandblasting brings out the unique character of glass. She’s deeply inspired by nature, and the beauty, strength and fragility that comes with that.

Getting the light right in your bathroom: illuminating advice from Ripples
“Bathrooms need a mixture of task, atmospheric and decorative lighting”

ood lighting can make all the di erence in a bathroom space, but is quite often an overlooked part of bathroom design. Here we ask Jo, Senior Designer at Ripples, for her advice on getting the light right in your bathroom.

Q What are the key things to consider when planning bathroom lighting?

A The key things to consider when it comes to bathroom lights are: the style and size of the fittings, how your lighting will be controlled (be it a switch, sensor or even an app on your phone) and the various layers of lighting which you might like to include (from task lighting through to atmospheric lighting). If you take time to think about who will use the bathroom and how, you’ll be able to consider the various mixture of lighting options that will suit your requirements.

Q Where should you start when planning bathroom lighting?

Q What would you say is the perfect mix of lighting for a bathroom?

A I usually suggest a mixture of task lighting, atmospheric lighting, and decorative lighting to make sure your bathroom is equipped to suit a range of purposes and moods. Task lighting is great for applying makeup or shaving on dark winter mornings, as well as ensuring your bathroom is lit enough to be thoroughly cleaned. Contrastingly, atmospheric lighting helps create a sense of calm in the evening time and helps prepare the body for sleep. Decorative lighting o ers a chance to choose something beautiful which you love, adding a sense of personality to your space.

A A good place to start is to assess the amount of natural light available in your bathroom. Then, once the design process is underway, your bathroom designer can help suggest additional lighting options which will further enhance the room and create the atmosphere you’re hoping to achieve. At Ripples, we usually start with the task lighting as this often sits above your sanitaryware and helps to bounce light around the rest of the room. We then look to layer additional lighting sources, depending on the style and feeling the client wants to create.

Sixth help their students to explore opportunities overseas

Sixth Form students are becoming increasingly interested in pursuing higher education at universities overseas.

According to the annual ISC census, the percentage of students at independent schools choosing to study outside of the UK has risen from 2.8% to 7% in the last ten years. The scope of choice is also continually widening, with UK students attending over 600 institutions overseas in 2023 – a rise from 400 in 2012. Whether for a ordability, breadth of course, or simply to experience a new environment, it is clear that the students of this generation are looking to expand their horizons and explore global opportunities in further education.

While many UK-based universities o er international placements within their curriculum, these are often limited to a term or a year. Completing a full degree overseas allows students to fully immerse themselves in a new culture, whilst still being able to study complex technical subjects in English. Whether this is to develop a second language or simply discover a di erent part of the world, undertaking a full degree at an international university o ers a rich cultural experience that will both challenge and delight.

In the US, the degree major system o ers a broader range of study than in the UK, enabling students to develop transferable skills and undertake a more rounded education. Instead of narrowing learning into a specific area, students are able to enjoy several more years of holistic study before they specialise. For students

with a keen eye for business, studying overseas opens up a world of opportunity for working in an international corporate setting. The benefits of completing a degree at an international university are plentiful.

At Berkhamsted Sixth, a co-educational independent school in Hertfordshire, Head of International University Applications Olivia Guillet is currently working with around 50 students across the Sixth Form cohort who are looking to apply to universities overseas. “There’s a larger number of students becoming aware of what the options are, the a ordability and potential for funding, and generally the breadth of degree courses that are open to them,” she says. “I think a lot of students want to make themselves more experienced and become more globally attractive in the working world.”

universities in their UCAS and careers provision. Past students have embraced global opportunities, with o ers from the United States, Australia and Europe, in addition to international students applying to universities in their home countries.

While awareness of international options is certainly widening, students need to be supported in researching beyond traditional routes. Applications to international universities are completed alongside the UCAS process in order to provide students with a greater spread of choices when their grades come through in August.

As such, it is important for students to start researching their options early.

Sheena Mehta is the Director of The University Guys, an organisation that provides information and guidance to students who are interested in applying to degrees overseas. Touring schools across the country, The University Guys bring representatives from a range of international universities to talk to students and highlight options they may not have considered.

“We are big believers that there is a perfect-fit university for every student out there in the world,” says Sheena, “and there are so many options that students can’t know all about.” With such a range of universities out there – and each with di erent ways of learning, di erent sizes and di erent styles of teaching – The University Guys

make it their business to help narrow the search. “We want to make sure students know about their options so they can make an informed decision,” Sheena adds. “We want students to be excited to wake up on a Monday morning and go to class because it’s exactly where they want to be.”

While students can benefit from di erent styles of teaching or reduced fees, adapting to unfamiliar environments and working with a diverse range of people can also help build a future workforce that is more communicative and empathetic.

In our rapidly globalising world, finding a ‘perfect-fit’ university overseas can be the first step in exploring a world of opportunity, both during and after completing a degree – and this begins with schools encouraging students to think more adventurously about their future.

As Sheena identifies, ‘there’s so much out there that you don’t know you don’t know’. Providing students with the necessary information to inform their choices sparks a global imagination, shaping young adults who strive beyond the confines of expectation. With organisations such as The University Guys o ering a wealth of knowledge to schools across the country, students are more aware than ever of the global opportunities available.

When Jesse toddled into his first Mini Mozart class, his world was small: his mum Rachel, his toys, and the comforting walls of his home. Shy and hesitant, Jesse, like many toddlers, found new experiences a little overwhelming. But within the nurturing environment of Mini Mozart, he found something transformative: music.

Founded by Clare Shaw when her children were babies some 20 years ago, Mini Mozart o ers live orchestral music classes for babies and toddlers across London, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, and is designed not just to introduce music, but to ignite all aspects of a child’s development, from motor skills to emotional intelligence. Through rhythm, song, and sensory play, toddlers like Jesse are learning far more than music – they’re gaining confidence, learning to express themselves, and preparing for the world of school.

Mini Mozart sessions are crafted to encourage babies and toddlers to explore and express. For a child like Jesse, this was life-changing. Instead of feeling lost in the

noise, Jesse was drawn into a world where he could participate and create, building his self-confidence with every beat. Music became a tool for expression; with every clap, stomp, and hum, he found ways to channel his emotions, building emotional intelligence and self-awareness without even realizing it.

At Mini Mozart, sensory play is more than just fun; it’s foundational. By introducing babies and toddlers to musical sounds, textures, and rhythms, the team of freelance musicians that run Mini Mozart classes tap into the children’s natural curiosity. Sensory play helps little ones make sense of the world around them, and for Jesse, this meant transforming unfamiliar environments into places of exploration. Tapping drums and shaking maracas calmed his anxiety, turning nervous energy into joyful noise.

As Emma Hanlon, who heads up the Hertfordshire team of musicians, explains: “Sensory play builds observational skills and encourages experimentation, helping children process their feelings and calm themselves naturally, however young they are.”

Incorporating dance, rhythm, and song, Mini Mozart isn’t just about musical notes; it’s about physical movement and memory-

building. Emma and her team use music to help toddlers remember words, colours, and concepts, from counting songs to freeze-dance games that sharpen focus. Action songs and movement games not only helped build Jesse’s memory, but also boosted his coordination and concentration. Watching him stomp like a dinosaur or clap with joy, his mum, Rachel, was delighted to see him blossom socially, developing fine and gross motor skills – all while having the time of his life!

What sets Mini Mozart apart is its ability to prepare babies and toddlers like Jesse for life beyond the class. With an emphasis on fun paired with patience, discipline, and respect, the classes cultivate key social-emotional skills that are essential for school readiness. By learning to wait their turn and be gentle with the orchestral instruments, toddlers practice self control and patience. By dancing with friends and clapping to rhythms, they develop social skills and cooperation.

Mini Mozart o ers more than just musical exposure; it opens doors to self-expression, builds confidence, and ignites a passion for learning.

ARK WILDLIFE

Hertfordshire-based Sean McMenemy has dedicated his life to helping people create wildlife havens in their outdoor spaces

When Sean McMenemy started Noah’s Ark Wildlife Gardens as a landscaping business back in 1991, little did he know what a huge impact he was to make on the bird feeding and garden wildlife industries over the following decades.

Over 30 years later he still brings the same passion for garden wildlife to work every day, so it’s no wonder he is so highly respected. His expertise lies in providing carefully selected natural food and products that o er significant benefits to wildlife – with the type of customer service only true enthusiasm for the subject can bring.

As the days grow shorter and the air carries that crisp, frosty bite, the wildlife in our gardens are busy preparing for the colder months ahead. While we might bundle up with hot chocolate and fuzzy blankets, our animal friends need a little extra help to find a cosy nook to settle down for winter. “Even in the frostiest months, much of our local wildlife can still be found searching for a bite to eat, such as birds and squirrels,” says Sean. Not every creature is ready to settle down for a long winter’s nap. But with nature’s pantry running low, a little helping hand can make all the di erence.

“Bird feeders are a fantastic way to o er much-needed energy to our feathered friends. Fill them with seeds, nuts and suet – rich in fats and nutrients that will help them stay warm and fuel their busy little wings. You’ll soon spot a flurry of activity as robins, tits and maybe even the occasional woodpecker stop by for a snack. If you have fruit trees, leave a few fallen apples or pears on the ground.

Hedgehogs, blackbirds and even insects will appreciate the sugary pick me up as they prepare for the chilly days ahead. Late butterflies, such as commas, will indulge in a little fermented fruit left on the lawn.

“For our beloved prickly pals, the hedgehog, providing a hearty meal can make all the di erence as they gear up for hibernation,” Sean adds. “Hedgehog food is a delightful and nutritious option to help them build up their energy reserves before settling down for the season. You can also leave out dog or cat food to help them pile on the pounds. Hedgehogs need to weigh around 600 grams (that’s about the size of a grapefruit) to survive winter’s icy grip, so o ering supplementary food can make a world of di erence. Just be sure to skip

the milk as their tummies can’t handle it. With a little extra care, you can ensure these charming creatures have the energy they need to curl up for winter, ready to wake and explore when spring arrives!

“While birds may not hibernate, they still need some extra shelter to survive the harsh winds and frosty nights,” Sean continues. “This is where winter roosting pouches come in! A well-placed roosting pouch gives small birds like robins, tits and sparrows a safe, snug space to roost when the weather turns rough. For the best chance of attracting feathered friends, make sure they’re placed in a sheltered spot, away from cold winter winds, rain and snow.”
