ABSOLUTELY’S November issue highlights

Nearly two years ago, a Romanian rescue puppy came into my life. Clara caught our eye due to her striking looks, a mish-mash of breeds taking in Corgi, Kokoni and Transylvanian Hound (really).

What you may not know, however, is that the journey these Romanian rescue dogs take to reach the UK invariably leaves a lasting effect. Most are incredibly nervous, but in the case of Clara, she is very reactive (to other dogs) and initially hated men (which meant the first month was a challenge for me and her).

Given we live in a time where people pay hundreds, sometimes thousands, to breeders for the perfect pup, way too many people out there just don't understand dogs like Clara, and why we sometimes can't control her excessive barking. It's why places like Ross & Friends in Berkhamsted is a godsend, offering play areas designed for reactive dogs – an early Christmas present in this month of our gift guides. And Clara wasn't just for Christmas, she is now our life and we wouldn't change her for the world.

moonlight hunter and a David Bowie spider are just a few of the extraordinary images from the Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, now in its 60th year.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition will showcase 100 photographs from around the world from 11th October 2024 in London. To mark the 60th anniversary, the Museum’s flagship exhibition will feature a timeline of key moments in the competition’s history. The 60th competition attracted a record-breaking 59,228 entries from photographers of all ages and experience levels from 117 countries and territories. Entries were judged anonymously on their creativity, originality, and technical excellence by a panel of industry experts.

This year they have introduced a new award in both the young and adult competitions, the Impact Award, to recognise a conservation success, a story of hope. The special prize forms part of the Natural History Museum’s vision of a future where both people and planet thrive.

Among the newly-released Highly Commended images is the first ever awarded smartphone image showing the successful completion of a mule deer doe’s circle of life by Randy Robbins. Model, disability activist and Hertfordshire-raised Georgia Meacham on changing perceptions about hearing aids and embracing being di erent

Last year my dad, finally, got a pair of hearing aids, probably about 20 years overdue. He still avoids putting them on when we have a social occasion – arguably the one time he really needs to wear them – simply saying, “I don’t like to have them on at these things”. Even a man of 76 years appears embarrassed by the prospect of hearing aids.

It’s something that Georgia Meacham is looking to change, more towards the younger generation, but start young and eventually the message will filter down through the ages. “As I’ve gained more perspective on my experiences and challenges, I’ve become motivated to use my voice to help others facing similar issues and raise awareness that wasn’t there before,” she says. “I want young boys and girls to see me and realise they should be proud of their deafness, too.”

Today, Georgia is a renowned model and disability activist, with a growing acting CV to her name, but says her childhood –partly spent in Hertfordshire – wasn’t the easiest. “At first, I felt di erent because I was the only one with hearing aids at school, mispronouncing words, and then having speech therapy while my friends were out playing at lunchtime,” she says. “As I got older, misunderstandings with friends – where they thought I was ignoring them when I simply didn’t hear them – along with all the trips to London for hospital visits, made it that little bit clearer that my life was somewhat di erent. Later on due to the bullying I dreaded going into school most days. I was tall, skinny and had hearing aids so I stood out. I was kind and soft too – an easy target.

“I have warm memories of my childhood though,” she adds, “with supportive parents, a loving home, and surrounded by furry friends (the best). Encouraged to always grab every

opportunity that came my way, I did well at school academically, even with my hearing challenges, and took part in plenty of extra-curricular activities too.”

That grounding in the world outside of the classroom has stood Georgia in good stead, particularly when she was spotted by a model scout – but the stigma of her hearing aids proved di cult to shake o . “I started hiding my hearing aids at university where I was able to somewhat ‘reinvent’ myself,” she says. “Then moving into the modelling world and the industry’s focus on perfection turned my adversity into a secret. I worried that being open about them might hurt my chances of getting work. It seems crazy looking back. My relationship with hearing aids was so negative. I felt self-conscious and ashamed, as if they were a constant reminder that I was di erent. I worried about how people would judge me if they found out, which eventually overshadowed my ability to see any positives. Instead of seeing them as a

“I want young boys and girls to see me and realise they should be proud of their deafness”

tool to connect with the world, they felt like a barrier. This all impacted my confidence and sense of self worth at the time.”

Did this feeling hold her back? “Yes and no,” she says. “Hiding my hearing aids definitely held me back – I couldn’t be my true self during shoots and often faced misunderstandings due to mishearing instructions and this made navigating the industry tougher. But on the flip side, the reality is diversity wasn’t as valued back then, and the beauty standards were very specific. Now, finally, times are changing.” Georgia describes her modelling career to date as “fun” and has now made the leap into acting, too. “Acting has always been my passion,” she says. “Telling important stories for those who can’t, similarly to how I’m advocating for deafness awareness now I guess. I love stepping into other people’s shoes, and my natural empathy has landed me with this gift.” Does she have a favourite acting experience so far? “I guess The Windsors as it was just so hard not to laugh! The best is yet to come though, watch this space.”

All this points to Georgia having a platform to get her message across. Driven by her mission to create a community she admittedly was never a part of, Georgia believes representation is key. Growing up, she never saw any young person in the public eye or on TV with hearing aids, so now Georgia is dedicated to amplifying the voices of those who often feel caught between the hearing and non-hearing worlds, ensuring that everyone feels included and raising awareness about the often-invisible challenges faced by people like herself.

Georgia is also determined to highlight the introduction of the optional GCSE in British Sign Language (BSL), starting in September 2025. “It’s huge because it’ll

bridge the gap between Deaf and hearing communities,” she states about this. “I’ve always felt caught between both worlds. BSL can benefit everyone, not just those with hearing loss. It’s useful in noisy or low-light situations, helps in crowded places, and even aids babies with speech development and others with learning disabilities. The benefits for us all are endless. It would have made me feel like part of a community and helped me accept my deafness more positively. BSL could have made my early years much more positive and probably I would have never felt ashamed during my 20s.”

So times are busy for Georgia, but she is quick to point out that she makes time to keep Hertfordshire as a part of her life. “I still have a strong connection to Hertfordshire. My first school was Westbrook Hay School in Hemel Hempstead; a beautiful Grade II listed building surrounded by acres of greenery. My early days here are filled with warm outdoorsy memories. Apart from my family home in Hitchin, I love St Albans and its cute independent co ee shops. Places like The Pudding Stop are fab. The perfect spot for a vegan treat!” she grins. And her final message to anyone facing di culties in life? “Be the role model you wished your younger self had. Embrace what makes you di erent – this is what makes you even more beautiful.”

How to choose and decorate the best Christmas tree for you

Areal Christmas tree with its unmistakable scent, dazzling array of decoration and twinkling lights, should always take centre stage when preparing your homes for the festive season.

At Capital Gardens, they understand the importance of a perfect Christmas tree. That’s why they ensure the quality and variety provided by their longstanding UK suppliers is always the best you’ll find anywhere. In their Garden Centres, you will find an extensive selection of trees and everything you need to decorate and illuminate them too, as you can read about below.

NORDMANN FIR

A firm favourite, the Nordmann Fir has a timeless shape and lush, glossy green foliage on tiered branches. It is perfect for showcasing decorative ornaments, and the soft familyfriendly needles make decorating easy for all the family too.

FRASER FIR

Its conical shape makes the Fraser Fir ideal for smaller spaces. Giving a delightful scent, the dense branches with soft greensilver needles make it an excellent choice.

NOBLE FIR

The Noble Fir displays all the qualities of an ideal Christmas tree. And, thanks to its beautiful blue-green foliage and pleasant fragrance, it is an attractive tree too. With excellent needle retention, open branching and perfect shape, this tree is ideal for showcasing those larger decorations.

POT-GROWN

When you buy a pot-grown tree, you’re getting a living tree. After the festive season, return it to Capital Gardens for their amazing supplier to replant in a forest. Care for it so it can keep growing and absorbing CO2. As a thank you, you'll receive a 20% o voucher for next year!

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREE

Decide where your tree will be placed. Remember not near heat or people

“Think of your Christmas tree like wallpaper”

running past! If you are using mains powered tree lights, place your tree near a plug socket. Choose a tree that fits the available height and space. Leave about 40cm between the top of the tree and the ceiling.

HINTS FOR DECORATION

Think of your Christmas tree like wallpaper – have a repeat pattern using the same baubles two or three times up and down the tree. For ease, remove the metal hook from the bauble, place it over a branch, and reattach the bauble to secure it. Dangly ones are fine too! Put plainer baubles closer to the tree trunk and the more decorative ones nearer the tips of the branches. Buy twice as many baubles as you think you might need – this is the same for lights! Position your lights up and down the branches, do not wrap them around the tree. Use decorations and lights in a way that will retain the magical shape of the tree.

AW24 WEDDINGS

It's that time of the year when thoughts turn to winter wedding trends, and there's plenty catching the eye with the bride's dresses. Expect timeless silhouettes such as A-line and ball gowns, dramatic sleeves are making a big impact, and colour infusions are in demand, where traditional is just as popular as soft pastels. Read about this and more over the page.

Winter

wonder

As we head into a new season, there’s plenty that’s hot right now in weddings, from winter wonderlands to jewel tones

A

s we move into the autumn and winter of 2024, the wedding industry is abuzz with new trends that promise to make each ceremony unique and memorable. From breathtaking venues to fashion-forward dresses, the season is set to deliver a blend of tradition and innovation. Here’s an in-depth look at what’s trending for weddings in the colder months of 2024.

VENUES

Rustic Elegance

The charm of rustic elegance continues to captivate couples. Barns and farm venues o er a cosy, intimate setting that complements the autumnal aesthetic perfectly. Decor often includes elements like fairy lights, wooden accents, and seasonal foliage, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Winter Wonderland Castles

For those who dream of a fairytale wedding, castles and historic estates provide a majestic backdrop. These venues o er grand ballrooms and enchanting gardens that can be transformed into a winter wonderland with twinkling lights, ice sculptures, and luxurious fabrics.

DECOR

Jewel Tones and Metallics

Deep jewel tones such as emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red are paired with metallic accents in gold, copper, and bronze. These colours add richness and depth to the decor, perfect for the colder months.

Seasonal Blooms and Foliage

Florals for autumn and winter weddings focus on seasonal blooms such as dahlias, chrysanthemums, and roses, combined with rich greenery like eucalyptus and pine. Adding elements like berries, pinecones and branches enhances the seasonal theme.

Candlelit Ambiance

Candlelight is being used extensively to create a romantic and intimate ambiance. From candelabras on dining tables to lanterns lining walkways, the soft glow of candles adds warmth to any venue.

FASHION

Bridal Gowns

Classic elegance: timeless silhouettes such as A-line and ball gowns remain popular, but with modern twists like o -the-shoulder necklines, illusion sleeves, and intricate lace detailing. Statement sleeves: dramatic sleeves are making a big impact, ranging from billowing bishop sleeves to structured pu sleeves. These add a touch of romance and grandeur to bridal attire. Colour infusions: while white and ivory are traditional, subtle infusions of colour are trending. Blush, champagne, and even soft pastels are making appearances in bridal collections, o ering a unique twist on the classic wedding dress.

Bridesmaid Dresses

Mix-and-match: bridesmaids are embracing individuality with mixand-match dresses in complementary colours and styles. This trend allows each bridesmaid to choose a dress that suits her body type and personal taste. Velvet and sequins: rich fabrics like velvet and sequined dresses are popular choices for autumn and winter weddings. These materials not only add a festive touch, but also provide warmth.

Groom and Groomsmen Attire Classic tuxedos with a twist: while classic black tuxedos remain a staple, grooms are adding personal touches with coloured velvet jackets, patterned bow ties, and unique cu inks. Layered looks: layering is key for winter weddings, with groomsmen sporting vests and overcoats in rich fabrics like wool and tweed, adding both style and practicality.

“Buying vintage dresses is becoming more popular”

FOOD & DRINK

Farm-to-Table Menus

Locally sourced, seasonal ingredients are at the forefront of wedding menus. Couples are opting for farm-to-table catering that emphasises fresh, sustainable, and delicious dishes.

Comfort Foods

As the temperature drops, comfort foods become a popular choice. Think gourmet mac and cheese, hearty stews, and roasted vegetables. These dishes not only satisfy, but also evoke a sense of warmth and homeliness.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainable Decor

Reusable decor elements, such as renting instead of buying, using biodegradable confetti, and incorporating potted plants instead of cut flowers, are ways couples are reducing waste.

Ethical Attire

Choosing wedding attire made from sustainable fabrics or buying vintage and second-hand dresses is becoming more popular. Some brides are even opting for dresses they can dye and wear again.

WINTER SKIN

GLOW UP

Dr Nyla Raja of Dr Nyla Medispa London explains how to protect your skin this winter

DR NYLA RAJA SPORTING THE ILLUMINATING EYE CREAM

Keeping your complexion on point throughout the winter months can be challenging.

Founder and Medical

Director of award-winning Doctor Nyla Medispa, Dr Nyla Raja, explains: “Winter is a magical time of year, with seasonal celebrations filling our social calendars. However, a combination of seasonal stress, over-indulgence, and cold weather conditions can a ect our skin health leaving us with skin that’s dull, dehydrated, and irritated. It’s therefore important to protect skin throughout the winter months so that the skin barrier is maintained, enabling the skin to retain its natural glow.

“One of the best things you can do for your skin throughout this period is to increase the skin’s hydration. This not only means drinking more water, but also adjusting the products you use to suit the needs of the season. Switching up your moisturiser to one that’s more oil based is beneficial as it increases hydration levels and counteracts dehydrating e ects such as lack of humidity, indoor heating, and bathing in hot water. SPF is also essential.

Not just for summer, wearing SPF daily is just as crucial throughout the winter months when UV damage can still occur.

“Using active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and peptides that maximise hydration, protect the skin barrier and reduce inflammation is key as they help to nourish the skin throughout winter when it’s often at its most sensitive. This is especially relevant for individuals with inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis who naturally have drier skin and may need to use their emollients more regularly at this time of year.”

A highly respected and much sought after cosmetic dermatology GP, considered to be one of the top cosmetic doctors in the country, Dr Nyla has practiced medicine for 20+ years and has personally delivered over 200,000 treatments with exceptional results.

A firm favourite with TV personalities, well-known celebrity figures and the media, her London clinic is home to some of the most sophisticated medical aesthetic technologies that the industry has to o er.

Dr Nyla continues: “In addition to good skincare practices, advanced skincare treatments can also help to manage the e ects of winter and get the skin glowing in advance of the festive season. It’s ideal to start as far ahead as possible as many require a course of treatments for the most e ective outcomes. Some of my favourite treatments to super-charge your winter glow up include:

HEART HOME

Berkhamsted-based Claire Garner Interiors share their kitchen design expertise

of the

It is through gaining a deep understanding of the lifestyles of their clients that Claire Garner Interiors are able to craft spaces which are not only functional, but also balance traditional rustic charm with a refreshing atmosphere. Absolutely Hertfordshire delves into the expertise of founder Claire Garner to uncover the intricate process behind designing the perfect country kitchen space.

“At Claire Garner Interiors, we pride ourselves on o ering a warm and personalised approach to every client, delivering elevated and tailored designs,” says Claire. “When approaching a kitchen design specifically, my focus is on achieving a harmonious balance between functionality, style, and practicality. Our goal is always to transform kitchens into spaces that reflect the individuality and lifestyle of each client.”

FUNCTIONALITY AND STYLE

At Claire Garner Interiors, the design process begins with a thorough understanding of each client’s lifestyle and needs. “Kitchen islands often play a crucial role in our designs,” Claire comments. “They serve as multifunctional hubs for food preparation, hosting, and casual dining. We aim to keep kitchen islands minimal to maximise surface area, providing additional social seating and allowing for easy multitasking while cooking.”

THE WORK TRIANGLE

E ciency is key in every kitchen layout that Claire and her team design. “I prioritise e ciency by organising key components like the sink, stove, and fridge in a triangular arrangement, known as the work triangle,” explains Claire. “This configuration ensures a smooth workflow and easy access to essential areas during meal preparation.”

NATURAL MATERIALS FOR A RUSTIC FEEL

Claire Garner Interiors loves to use hero natural materials, creating traditional and rustic spaces with a clean, open ambience. “Incorporating natural materials is key to achieving a rustic charm in kitchen design,” explains Claire. “Wood plays a pivotal role, whether it’s used for cabinetry, shelving, or kitchen accessories as its rich textures and warm tones infuse the space with a sense of history and authenticity. To further enhance the rustic ambiance, we frequently integrate other natural elements such as stone surfaces for worktops or flooring, and brass hardware.”

ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS

Careful planning of architectural details is essential to optimise both the design and functionality of the kitchen. As Claire explains: “Alcoves and nooks are creatively utilised for additional storage or cosy seating areas, ensuring every inch of space is maximised e ectively. When possible, I enjoy integrating open shelving to elegantly showcase beautiful crockery or pantry items, blending practicality with charm.” Additionally, farmhouse sinks with their deep basins and distinctive apron fronts not only accentuate the kitchen’s rustic appeal, but also o er generous space for washing large pots and pans.

CREATING A COHESIVE DESIGN

“The use of neutral colour palettes is instrumental in maintaining a light, fresh ambiance,” Claire explains. “Shades like white, beige, and soft pastels allow natural materials to shine, simultaneously making spaces feel more expansive and inviting. Also, remember to add little design touches of greenery, through indoor plants or a kitchen herb garden, which will bring life and vibrancy to the kitchen design.”

“Lighting plays a crucial role in creating charm”

LIGHTING THE WAY

“Lighting plays a crucial role in achieving the desired rustic charm,” continues Claire. “Metal or glass pendant lights and stylish wall fixtures provide perfect illumination, complementing natural materials and overall design aesthetics. The right lighting can transform a space, making it feel both functional and inviting.”

Layered lighting is essential in creating a versatile and welcoming kitchen space. “By combining ambient, task, and accent lighting, you can enhance both the functionality and atmosphere of the kitchen,” Claire explains. “Ambient lighting, such as ceiling fixtures or recessed lights, sets the overall tone of the room, providing general illumination. Task lighting, including under-cabinet lights and pendant lights over workspaces, ensures that specific areas are well-lit for cooking and food preparation. Accent lighting, such as spotlights or LED strips, can highlight architectural details, artwork, or decorative elements.

“Incorporating dimmable lighting options allows for flexibility,” Claire adds. “Being able to adjust the brightness according to di erent activities and moods is crucial. Brighter lighting is ideal for meal preparation, while softer, warmer lighting creates a cosy atmosphere for dining or entertaining.

“Don’t forget about the importance of natural light,” Claire emphasises. “Maximising the use of windows and skylights can bring in plenty of natural daylight, enhancing the rustic feel and making the space feel more open and airy. Natural light not only improves the ambiance, but also has a positive impact on our well-being.”

TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE

Why an indoor pool from Origin is worth the investment

Investing in an indoor swimming pool from Origin o ers many benefits, making it a perfect choice for homeowners seeking both luxury and practicality. From year-round enjoyment and increased property value to customisable designs and health benefits, an indoor pool provides a versatile addition to your home. As you consider whether an indoor pool is a good investment, it’s essential to understand how it can impact your home’s value and the potential return on investment (ROI). One of the most compelling advantages of an indoor pool is the ability to enjoy it throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions. Unlike outdoor pools, which are limited by seasonal use, indoor pools provide a dedicated space for exercise, relaxation and family fun all year long. Regular swimming enhances cardiovascular health, builds muscle strength, reduces stress and contributes to overall mental and physical well-being, making it a valuable addition to your lifestyle.

Origin o ers bespoke indoor pool designs tailored to your specific preferences. This customisation ensures that your pool meets your functional needs and complements your home’s aesthetics – whether as an extension of your home or as a standalone structure in your garden. Indoor pools o er greater privacy and security than outdoor options, as they are protected from public view and weather-related damage, reducing maintenance e orts and costs.

An indoor pool can significantly enhance your home’s property value. A well-designed pool house adds functional space for recreation and relaxation, making your home more appealing to potential buyers. This exclusive feature can di erentiate your property in the market, attracting buyers seeking high-end amenities, potentially leading to a higher resale value and increased speed of sale.

The return on investment for an indoor swimming pool varies but can be substantial. When assessing ROI, consider the potential increase in property value and the long-term benefits of having a year-round recreational space. The ability to utilise the pool throughout the year adds immense value to your family’s lifestyle, o ering countless health benefits and enjoyment, ensuring a secure and long-lasting return on your investment.

While an indoor swimming pool is a significant investment, the rewards to your home and lifestyle far outweigh the initial costs. The health advantages are substantial, transforming your daily routine.

FSofology Enfield pick out six of the best looks for the living room this winter

Pumpkin spice

rom the timeless elegance of classic, period styling, through to the clean lines and artless use of colour found in contemporary design, there is an abundance of ways to create your dream living room. Here are some of the living room trends heading our way this autumn, and Gisela Lancaster, Head of Buying at Sofology, explains a little more about what to expect.

 Inspired by the warming colours of autumn, such as rust, cinnamon and ochre, this elegant scheme pairs semiformal upholstery with bespoke cabinetry and artisan lighting, to create a look that delivers elegance and sophistication whilst feeling honed and homely.

“Settle in for cosy nights ahead and reimagine a classic autumnal aesthetic, with a mix of rust, cinnamon, ochre and terracotta shades to achieve a smarter and more structured living room style,” Gina adds on the look. “Work with a terracotta palate in an imaginative way, layering a tonal scheme so that deep rich hues play o lighter and fresher colours to provide contrast.”

Dopamine hit

 This season, the dopamine trend gets a grown up makeover. Tactile leather sofas, paired with layers of beautiful dark wood and smart fitted window dressings, are framed against a cosy peach and apricot backdrop. Hints of cobalt blue bring the feel good factor to this chic design.

“Standout accent chairs often allow us to be playful, and when paired with di erent styles of upholstery, provide a chic and designer feel,” Gina says. “Look for more subtle shades that deliver a similar feel-good vibe, such as cosy peach decor framing a gallery wall with layers of beautiful dark wood. Small hits of energetic colour, such as cobalt blue, help to further join the dots and provide an incredibly tasteful dopamine hit.”

Luxamalism

 Our homes often cry out for a more cosseting approach and curvaceous, sculptural designs are the perfect solution. Root yourself into an immersive and emotive colour experience on a sofa with personality.

“Luxe hotel-inspired decor continues to be a popular trend,” Gina says, “and getting it right is about bold design, colour and curves. Luxamalism is a concise, less-ismore approach to elevating a living space,

using standout furniture pieces to achieve a chic scheme. Consider armchairs in unusual shapes that deliver cosseting comfort and designer lines.

“Opt for rich colours in sumptuous and tactile fabrics,” she adds, “such as plush velvets, boucle or even faux fur, to o er a touch of luxury. Design elements, such as curves and fluting, can also maximise comfort whilst making an impact visually, enhancing the ambiance of a space and injecting individuality into the room.”

Bouji boho

 An evolution of the boho style and perfect for more modern spaces, robust shapes meet rich colour and patterns, generating a perfect balance of style and comfort. “The secret to open plan living is ensuring that each space retains its own character, whilst the overall design feels connected and coherent,” Gina says. “Removing walls is no longer the only option when it comes to opening up our living spaces. Internal crittall doors and look throughs into other spaces are a clever way to create cosy spaces in a bigger footprint. Design a relaxed flow through the home with a boho style that can be woven into a modern kitchen and living space, with comfortable upholstery and carefully selected accessories and prints.”

Work-life balance

 Conventional delineation of our living spaces has changed markedly over the last few years. Finding a work-life balance can be quite the conundrum. Internal glazing o ers a stylish way to divide a room, whilst a

statement sofa facing away from your home o ce o ers a comforting escape.

“Zoning with the placement of a statement sofa to create two distinct areas is easy for most people to try, whilst internal glazing o ers a stylish way to divide any room,” Gina says. “Allowing as much light into a busy room also helps to maximise space, with layered lighting in darker months further underpinning the di erent functions of each area.”

Winter tropics

 Textural upholstery, in uplifting Prussian blue velvet and lush fern green woven chenille, spark moments of joy alongside zingy lighting fixtures, woollen Welsh blankets and artwork to bring a feeling of winter warmth and a personalised feel to the space.

“Combat winter blues with an injection of botanical therapy and elevate the space with a contemporary mix of furniture styles that collectively invite and individually inspire,” Gina adds. “E ective in the smallest of living rooms, mismatched footstools, sofas and chairs in a range of textures that speak the same language allow us the freedom to be bold in our choices.”

How Colours of Arley is bringing their signature stripes to a variety of projects

Colours of Arley and journalist and designer Jess Alavi-Ellis first teamed up in 2023 following their shared love for colour, vintage charm and sustainable materials to create the hugely successful Vintage Drop. The collection gave time-worn furniture a new lease of stripey life. The debut ‘Drop’ was in high demand with the first pieces selling within minutes of going live. Returning to vintage markets, antique sellers and trawling auctions, they sourced five pieces to restore and expertly reupholster in Colours of Arley signature stripes. The second installment, Vintage Drop 2.0, launched with a set of bar stools, a play chair, a sofa, a pet bed and an armchair. Not only does the collection give new life to preloved furniture, but the pieces are all upholstered in Colours of Arley signature recycled fabrics, which are made from bottles that have been diverted from landfill.

Bringing the South of France to East London, Colours of Arley teamed up with French design studio Mattina Moderna, to create a capsule collection of beautiful striped ‘La Petite Boîte’ lamps. The home of Mattina Moderna designer and co-founder, Clémentine Poncin, was the source of inspiration for this joint venture which celebrates the best of

the French Riviera. Reflecting the tones of the sand, sun and sea, as well as olive trees, lemon groves and the iconic, Villa Ephrussi, the chosen stripes of the lamps are reminiscent of Clementine’s treasured sundrenched coast. Mattina Moderna was founded in 2020 by a mother-daughter duo who weave together art and design into their creations. Clémentine Says: “Mattina Moderna is a slow design studio, and for us, that means creating a limited series of products that are made with heart, extreme care and are hand assembled in Nice by my mother. We are passionate about creating products that are timeless and humble, rooted in tradition and have a shared past. Collaborating with Colours of Arley felt very natural and the perfect fit for us. From the custom o ering, to limited series, love for colour combinations, and of course the story behind the stripes, our collection of lamps share a story of Nice.”

Colours of Arley’s Louisa Tratalos explains: “The cubic shape of ‘La Petite Boîte’ lamp lends itself beautifully to our signature stripes and each colour combination tells a story of the Cote D’Azur. Timeless and e ortless, the lamps will add a playful element to any room.” Combining character and sustainability, the fabric is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.

ROSS & FRIENDS

The UK’s largest dog only park happens to be right here in Hertfordshire

Rossway Park Estate is a family run 1,000 acre country estate located on the outskirts of Berkhamsted with a history dating back to the 17th century. The estate is a hub of activity for residents and other businesses located in its beautiful surroundings that have been designated as an o cial Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty. The estate also has a number of vibrant businesses under its portfolio including events, mushroom farming, self-storage, an alpaca experience – and it is also home to a doggy safari, called Ross & Friends.

At 35+ acres (the equivalent of 15+ football pitches) they’re the largest 'dog only' park in the UK. Privately owned and operated, they’ve created a special place centred around your pup. Being enclosed, it’s the perfect setting to walk, play, exercise or train.

There is a 3-acre fully enclosed field within the safari. It’s a safe and stressfree place for your dog to roam and play, all located within the expansive beauty of the safari. It’s a good option for reactive pups or for training sessions.

About the size of a football pitch, this is a fully enclosed private forest for your pup to explore nose first. An alternative to traditional exercise, sni walks are mentally stimulating and enriching as dogs “see” the world through their nose. It’s a great option for more advanced training through distractions.

The Invisible Fairy Tale Forest is fully enclosed and private with a climbing castle, sandpit, enrichments and custom agility equipment. It’s a magical forest for your dog to frolic, explore and be completely free, and worry free.

Designed for reactive dogs or those who want complete privacy, Ross & Friends’ 'invisible' spaces allow you to park directly inside your private play area and includes a doggie shower. All fencing is either wooden panels or stock fencing with a hedge, to prevent clear sight of other dogs or people. They also o er 'room service' where you can purchase cafe items from your space and they will deliver it to you.

In addition to natural ponds and trails, they’ve also created pockets with hidden

toys and enrichments for your dog to discover. There’s nothing else like this in the UK and it’s right here in Hertfordshire. This is a rare opportunity to let your dog run free to play and explore, and see them interact with new and novel things and environments. And, just like people, it’s important for dogs to make new friends. Every visit to the safari is a chance for your dog to meet their new best friend.
