ABSOLUTELY’S October issue highlights
Iam old enough to remember Pop Idol and all the hullabaloo around who should win out of Will Young and Gareth Gates (although I needed to Google it to remind myself who did claim the prize). The X Factor was the natural heir, but I was never exactly a die hard viewer, apart from being one of the many thousands who voted Wagner that one year for a laugh (although ultimately it was the bigwigs behind the show who laughed all the way to the bank).
What has been interesting is over my career I have interviewed a few singers who appeared on the show, did relatively well, but were never keen on chatting about it, which I found quite intriguing. Not cool to be associated with it? Or something deeper? And yet, Janet Devlin – who has had plenty of knock backs since appearing on the show – was only too happy to reflect on that time.
Inside this month, she tells me about her addiction issues that brought her to a real low, but how she wanted to share the experiences with others to let them know support is out there. She has battled back and, now, is all set to release a much anticipated new album – and, excitingly, is moving back to Hertfordshire too. She gets my vote.

Janet Devlin’s career has been full of surprises. The acclaimed singer chats to Absolutely about addiction, a new album and moving back to Hertfordshire
Janet Devlin certainly doesn’t stand still. Ever since the public fell in love with the Northern Irish singer’s voice on the X Factor –when she was only 16 – she has rapidly built quite a career that has covered hit albums, a searingly honest book, and a TV documentary that focused on her battle to overcome alcohol addiction. Now, a month before she turns 30, she is back with a new anticipated album, Emotional Rodeo
“The album is called Emotional Rodeo for a reason,” she picks up the story with Absolutely “It’s a lot of feelings on record. I have the ballads that people have come to know me for. I went through a big breakup in the middle of writing the record, someone I’d been with for three years. So I had a lot of hurt I needed to get o my chest. On the flip side, I’ve got so much uptempo on this album, something I’ve never had before. I think it’s due to making peace with myself. I’m in a much happier place, so naturally the songs reflect this. For the first time, I feel like the bubbly, fun part of myself is finally being shown in my music as well.”
Considering some of the adversity Janet has had to face in her life, that’s music to our ears. After a childhood surrounded by music – “I grew up listening to so many genres, but country music was the one genre that everyone in my family listened to and agreed on. Meaning that for every holiday,
long car ride, or Sunday morning radio in the kitchen, there was always country music playing. There was a lot of Garth Brooks, Hal Ketchum, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton…” – her singing really took centre stage on the X Factor. “When I started to get further and further into the audition process with the X Factor [I thought I could make a career out of singing]. By the time I got to the judge’s houses, I’d promised myself that even if I didn’t get any further, I’d at least take a year out of school to pursue singing and songwriting. Up until then, it felt like a dream that was just completely unattainable.”
It’s refreshing, too, that Janet is happy to talk about her time on X Factor (we have encountered at least two other people who didn’t want to talk about it at all). “It changed the trajectory of my life completely,” she says. “I was just a studious teen from the middle of nowhere. I was doing my grades in music, drumming and musical theatre, and then riding my horses at the weekends. The concept of performing on a global stage was just a daydream that I’m sure many teenage girls have. Overnight, I was on the cover of newspapers, on the evening news, and people knew who I was. Before the show, most people in my school didn’t even know my name or who I was.”
It’s amazing to think it’s a decade since Janet’s debut album, Running With Scissors “Every album feels like a season in my life,” she looks back. “It’s almost like a summary of
the years up until the next release. I feel that I’ve been really lucky in my career. Because I started at 16, naturally it was going to take a while to find my feet and find myself as an artist. Since I didn’t sign with a major label young, I was free to go o and make my own mistakes. Knowing that if something failed or people didn’t like it, at the end of the day it was my decision to put it out. I also have the freedom to explore genres and release whatever I want. Thirteen years of experimenting has finally led to me finding myself, my sound, and my voice as a writer.”
Janet’s next steps o ered an intimate insight into her own battles. Confessional served as a deeply personal narrative as she poured her heart out, transforming her struggles into a captivating folk-pop odyssey that resonated with audiences worldwide. Accompanied by her book My Confessional, this multifaceted project o ered an intimate glimpse into her world. Then, in 2022, Janet’s
“I am in a much happier place, so the songs reflect that”
compelling journey was captured in BBC documentary Janet Devlin: Young, Female, and Addicted. The programme explored her own story of alcoholism and its e ects on her life and on others around her, while exploring the stories of other young women su ering from the consequences of alcohol addiction in Northern Ireland. Was it a tough decision to do the BBC documentary? “Not at all,” she says matter of factly. “As I’d already done reality TV and vlogging, oversharing was something I was very comfortable with. Being able to be a part of something that could get the message of recovery to more people was an easy yes for me. I wanted to show recovery is possible. It’s for everyone. That if I can do it, anyone can. I truly was a lost cause at a point in my life. But also that addiction doesn’t have a look because it doesn’t discriminate. It’s not someone on a park bench drinking out of a paper bag. It can be CEOs, successful businessmen, mothers… anyone.”
Despite a musical hiatus since her It’s Not That Deep EP in 2021, she remained deeply connected to her loyal fanbase, boasting over a million followers across TikTok and Instagram. Now, though, Emotional Rodeo is all set to be released in November. Recorded at Martina McBride’s Blackbird Studio in Nashville with esteemed producer Roo Walker, tracked by Lowell Reynolds (Shania Twain, BoyGenius, Taylor Swift) and mixed mostly at Spotnick Studios by GrammyAward winning producer/mixer Vance Powell (Chris Stapleton, Jack White), Janet captures the heartfelt essence of countryrock with an authentic edge, blending sharp, witty lyrics with themes of fearless selfempowerment. “Every release I’m always overwhelmed with a feeling of gratitude,” she says on how she’s feeling. “Someone like me somehow managed to make and release another full body of work into the world.”
Another big thing happening this month is a return to Hertfordshire. “It’s already providing me a lot of peace, as I’m currently doing some painting and decorating in the house I’m moving into,” she smiles. “Driving out of the city and being closer to nature again is a welcome feeling. Especially when there’s all the chaos of a release going on! I love that you’re always a stone’s throw away from a lovely walk in the countryside. Last year I got back into horse riding properly, so I’m riding four times a week. Being able to tack up and hack out into nature is honestly the best therapy there is. The rolling fields of Hertfordshire are a pretty stunning view to take in. Even though I’ve been in London for the past couple of years, my weekend treat would be to drive to work, go for a walk, and then grab a pastry from Proto Bakery!”
Emotional Rodeo will be released in November. Follow Janet on Instagram @janetdevlino cial and youtube.com/janetdevlin

Absolutely meets BarbaraHanly, the founder of Soopa, to discover how the pet treat brand was born out of undying a ection
They say that some people come into your life for a reason, but for former dog groomer
Barbara Hanly, it was a tiny 1.7kg Chihuahua X Jack Russell called Lily who was to become the catalyst to transforming a kitchen table idea into a successful business.
Barbara is the founder of Soopa, an awardwinning pet treat brand, celebrating canine health and well-being through a growing range of delicious plant-based recipes inspired by her beloved dog Lily coupled with her experience as a dog groomer.
“While working as a dog groomer, I was shocked at the amount of obesity, skin and health issues I saw in dogs,” she explains. “I started looking into typical ingredients added to dog food and treats. I realised then that I did not want Lily to consume all these nasty additives and fillers and that I could do better, so I set about researching and baking.”
With Lily and her friends as eager chief taste-testers, word soon spread through friends, then friends of friends, and soon Barabra was inundated by pet parents wanting to buy her range of delicious superfood treats for their fur babies. “It was then I began to realise that maybe I was onto something special, and if Lily and her friends, old and
young, big and small, approved, then this could become a successful business.”
In 2013, Barbara o cially launched Soopa, and the company has already won multiple awards. It is regularly featured in the media and currently sells across the UK, Europe, Southeast Asia, and, more recently, the USA. However, Barbara has never strayed far from her original vision despite their commercial success. “I’ve always stayed true to my original quest to create delicious treats which combine human-grade superfoods that taste good and are good for your dog’s health,” she says.
“For example, we include cranberries in a couple of our recipes. Did you know that cranberries are an excellent source
of vitamin C, known for its positive impact on digestive health and boosting immunity? Every recipe we create is designed to benefit your dog’s health and well-being.”
With a growing range of tasty o erings, the Soopa range allows pet parents to shop by age and suitability with a focus on o ering pets with restrictive health conditions, including obesity and low immunity, flavourful treats that all dogs can enjoy without compromise.
“I am always thinking about new recipes and product ideas – it’s absolutely my favourite part of my role,” Barbara smiles. “Initially, I’ll present my ideas to my team and then decide which one to develop further. Once samples are ready, we do the all-important taste test phase with our in-house canine team. After packaging is designed and printed and production is complete, you are looking at six months from start to finish. We have just released our latest range, the 'Cosy Collection', embracing traditional seasonal flavours, including Pumpkin and Cranberry, with an autumnal flavour twist, especially for this winter season.”
As an ethical pet brand, Soopa ensures that all their treats are made to human-grade standard “because we wouldn’t feed our dogs something that we couldn’t eat ourselves” – a statement that was taken quite literally when former ITV’s This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby tasted their papaya dog
chews live on the show and approved! The brand’s range of dental sticks and healthy bites are also now packaged in their 100% paper-recyclable flow-wrap packaging. But their moral standing doesn’t finish there. “We support Dogs Trust Ireland by sharing their weekly dog spotlight on our social media to help find them homes,” Barbara explains. “We have 'Soopa Heroes of the Month', where we ask people to nominate their chosen charity via our website and Instagram posts, and we pick one at random and donate £100 to that charity.”
This love of dogs is intrinsic in Barbara’s approach to business philosophy and their success, but dogs have always played a big personal part in her life. “I’ve always been a huge animal lover,” she smiles. “My first dog was a Yorkshire terrier, Beauty, whom I absolutely adored. Beauty gave me a lot of stability during a di cult childhood when I was bullied at school. My dog Lily came into my life when a friend rescued her as a stray and was trying to find her a new loving home. The first time I met her, she jumped straight into my lap, and in that instant, I knew she was coming home with me! Lily is a huge part of the Soopa story. Lily sadly passed at the end of 2022, and I still miss her every day.”
Barbara was, however, to find another sweet soul to help ease the pain of losing Lily in the form of Hammie. “My heart was broken after losing Lily, so I wasn’t even thinking about another dog when I met a lovely lady in France who rescues dogs from China and re-homes them in Europe. She showed me a photo of Hammie the night he was found, all alone on the side of the road, and a part of me knew I had found a new soulmate. I have a feeling Lily may have even sent Hammie my way! Hammie has definitely helped heal my heart. He loves his new life on the road in the west of Ireland.”

Why Tewinbury is one of Hertfordshire’s most in demand locations
Idyllic lakeside huts with hot tubs, field-to-fork dining, wellness classes, boutique cinema, live music events, and a Craft Guild of Chefs-endorsed cookery school to boot: Tewinbury is a 700-acre Hertfordshire haven ready to be claimed as your hidden gem, with its food o erings a stand out for Absolutely
From field-to-fork and garden-to-glass, local provenance is king at Tewinbury, with ingredients sourced on the farm or within the local area. Executive Chef Alistair Dibbs, whose culinary journey has taken him through Michelin-starred kitchens and seen him collaborate with the likes of Tom Kerridge and Hélène Darroze, oversees the talented kitchen teams who whisk up all manner of seasonal sustenance across the three fantastic food and drink o erings.
What was once the farm’s original chicken shed, the granary barn has been lovingly converted into the Granary Kitchen, a rustic homespun space full of hearty breakfast dishes, colourful brunch options, laid-back lunches and farm-fresh Sunday roasts to round o the week.
Meanwhile, the former home of the farm’s herd of dairy cows is now Tewinbury’s signature dining experience, Cowshed. The 80-cover restaurant embodies a tasteful, modern farmhouse feel with plenty of natural, tactile furnishings, exposed brickwork and original oak beams. A mixture of round tables, booths and smaller tables suit all sizes of occasions, from large gatherings to intimate dinners à deux.
The menu of British classics with a refined touch (categorised into Grill, Sea, Land and Pies) shifts with the seasons, inspired by the cyclical bounty of the kitchen garden, working farm and revered local suppliers. Think Duck prosciutto with Cowshed mustard, grilled sourdough, pickles, and Lloyd’s leaves; Mackerel fillet with sauerkraut, crispy pancetta, broad bean & parsley dressing; Fresh tagliatelle pasta with wild garlic pesto, foraged wild mushrooms, courgette & shaved aged parmesan; and Mimram shepherd’s pie with Mimram lamb ragu, mash potato, and brown sauce.
The Cowshed’s award-winning Afternoon Tea is an enticing Thursday to Sunday
fixture. Far from the average o ering, the traditional silver three-tiered stand includes unique savouries like Pork rillette and rhubarb ketchup on sunflower seed & rosemary oat biscuit and salt-baked & pickled beetroot tartlet with Bloody Mary sauce alongside the freshly baked farmhouse scones, finger sandwiches and mini desserts. You can invite the whole family to indulge with a delightful children’s option featuring tasty, simplified adaptations of all the elements, accompanied by hot chocolate or fresh juices.
If you’re looking for a drinking nook with a di erence, The Stable Cosy Art & Piano Bar is a truly unique find. The relaxing space is decked with deep, comfy sofas, reclaimed furniture and art-embellished brick walls. Grab a good book or a backgammon board and claim your favourite corner for sipping away a rainy afternoon surrounded by colourful contemporary pieces from talented Hertfordshire artists.

Stem Cell Collagen Facial with LED
t’s a Friday afternoon and I’m in London to visit Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis Clinic. I enter through the sleek store on Pavilion Road, going upstairs to the luxurious space. Super facialist Sarah Chapman has a celebrity client list as long as my arm. Known for creating glowy skin magic, Meghan Markle, Victoria Beckham, and Naomi Watts all have her on speed dial. I’m booked in with the lovely Lauren for the Stem Cell Collagen Facial with LED. The treatment room is cosy and Lauren invites me to relax on the bed. She starts with Ultimate Cleanse (an omega-rich balm), followed by Rapid Radiance (an intensive detoxifying treatment). My skin feels clean and hydrated. Next up is a lactic peel, with steam extract to help de-clog my pores and banish dead skin. To help boost collagen, Lauren microneedles my skin, preparing it for the Platinum Pep8 Stem Cell Serum. With gardenia stem cells and hyaluronic hydrators, the formulation improves skin health and delivers a glowy complexion. Next, I relax with the 3D Moisture Infusion Mask, followed by a dreamy facial massage. Finally, Lauren puts me under an LED lamp, with blue, red, and near-infrared light. “Your skin is a little bit red, but a good red,” she says. She’s right, she’s definitely achieved the signature Sarah Chapman glow and my skin is plump and radiant for days afterwards. And the best bit? I can keep the glow going with Sarah Chapman’s new Clinic Range products at home. EDITOR’S PICK

It's one of the hottest days of the summer when I hop on the overground to Shoreditch High Street. I'm o to Psycle's east London studio to try one of their popular 'Ride' classes. I'm already a little bit sweaty, and am wondering if I'll make it through a high-intensity spin class. I'm met at the reception by the lovely Lucie. She preorders me a protein shake from Psycle's all-vegan Energy Kitchen (the menu looks so good, I find it hard to choose), and shows me to the sleek changing area – a stylish space, equipped with everything from dry shampoo to hair straighteners. I head down to the studio with my spinning shoes and Lucie sets me up on my
bike. She explains how the seat should be positioned and how to turn up the resistance. Spin classes can feel intimidating with their dark club-like studios, but as a relative newbie, this definitely makes me feel more at ease. O ering Ride, Barre, Strength, Reformer and Yoga classes, Psycle started out as a single studio in central London, but has become so popular that it now has a further four locations in the city. My 45-minute Ride class is being led by instructor Ollie Black. On the platform at the front, he pumps out the tunes from his mixing desk, easing us in with a gentle warm up. I get into it quickly, as Ollie instructs
us to feel the beat and move in unison with the other riders in the room. He encourages us to crank up the resistance until it's almost too heavy, 'tapping back' and forth into the saddle. I'm really feeling the flow as a remix of Candi Staton's 'You Got The Love' blasts out. Ollie ups the intensity with a weights section, and then we're done. We unclip and stretch, and I get a fist bump as I leave. I feel like I've pushed myself, but it was fun. Back upstairs, I happily refuel with my protein shake, eager to book another class.
Psycle Ride classes start at £17.50; psyclelondon.com
Hill House Interiors is the fruit of a 25-year friendship between its founding partners, Jenny Weiss and Helen Bygraves. Their creative collaboration is built on a shared belief that beautiful surroundings can transform people’s lives. Their client-centred approach has garnered a multitude of awards, while their business has grown over the years into one of Britain’s leading interior design practices, with a 30-strong team of designers and architects. With a global reach, Hill House Interiors works on high-end residential projects in locations as diverse as London, New York, Lake Como, Antibes, the Bahamas, Ibiza and LA –not forgetting Hertfordshire, with one of their projects featured on these pages. The two tell Absolutely how everything has come together over a quarter of a century.
Q Before Hill House Interiors, what were your respective backgrounds in the industry?
A Helen: For the first 20 years of my life, I trained professionally in dance. This discipline instilled in me a strong sense of focus, precision, and dedication. As I grew, my passion for the arts and expression blossomed. I had always been drawn to the beauty of interior design, and the attention to detail and drive I developed through my training made pursuing a career in design a natural and perfect fit.
Jenny: Fashion has always been a passion of mine, deeply inspired by art, film, theatre, and costume design. These elements of broader culture continue to influence and enrich our work. I cherish the way each of these inspirations contributes to our creative process. Much like Helen, I have always felt a natural calling to create beautiful things. This shared drive fuels our dedication to crafting exquisite, one-of-a-kind designs.
Q Why did you want to launch a business together?
A Jenny: We met in the 90s through our husbands and instantly became close friends. At that point in our lives, the timing was perfect. We’d both had children and we were ready to embrace the next chapter of our careers. With a shared passion for beautiful homes, it didn’t take long to realise we had similar interests and influences, making a partnership an exciting prospect. Our interior styles harmonised beautifully, yet with distinct nuances that enrich our perspectives, offering diverse and sophisticated viewpoints for our discerning clients.
Q Was it difficult to get off the ground?
A Helen: We really valued the opportunity to work with one of our very first clients, Octagon, who truly understood the value of exceptional interior design. With the right budget to achieve the perfect aesthetic, it empowered us to explore striking and innovative design approaches for their homes. This quickly earned us a devoted following and significant attention, with many
“The design should reflect who they are, their values, beliefs and tastes”
eagerly anticipating our next project –quite a feat in the days before social media.
Q How do you look back on your early days?
A Jenny: Looking back, it’s truly remarkable to see the journey we’ve undertaken. In the early days, it was just the two of us, often working from our homes, driven by passion, vision and tenacity.
Helen: We could never have imagined that our modest beginnings would evolve into a thriving studio with a team of nearly 40. The growth and success we’ve experienced are beyond anything we could have dreamed of. There’s always so much to learn, especially at the beginning of a business journey, but it’s crucial to keep learning and developing, no matter how far you’ve come.
Q How did you want to be different?
A Helen: Our core ethos is to create homes that truly embody each client’s unique personality and lifestyle. The design should reflect who they are, their values, beliefs, and tastes. It serves as both a stage set and a backdrop to their life.
Jenny: It wasn’t necessarily a conscious decision to be different; rather, we’ve always strived to be innovative and stretch the boundaries, believing that nothing is too difficult or impossible to create.
Q How do you two work together?
A Jenny: We each have our own strengths and styles, yet our principles are perfectly
aligned. Both of us have a very keen eye for detail, which is essential in our line of work. We take a very hands-on approach, collaborating closely with each client to offer a bespoke service that covers everything from interior architecture to the in-house florist we work with. The devil is in the details, and having two pairs of eyes is invaluable when it comes to perfecting our designs for clients.
Q Have you changed over 25 years?
A Helen: We’ve accumulated invaluable experience over nearly three decades and as with any business, we’ve experienced a mix of highs and lows – all of which we’ve learnt from. Despite this, we remain the same passionate and tenacious individuals we were at the start and our drive to push our business forward is as strong as ever. Over the years, we’ve come to understand the immense value of loyalty. We naturally form long-lasting relationships with our clients, resulting in repeat business across generations. Our team is like family, and we believe that the loyalty of both the Hill House Interiors team and our industry partners is at the core of our success.
Q Why did you want to mark this anniversary by launching a Lifestyle collection?
A Helen: We’re so proud to have been working together for over 25 years. Reaching this milestone is no small feat, and it felt only natural to celebrate it with something special while continuing
to challenge ourselves in expanding the brand. We aimed to introduce a collection that combines practicality with style, one that could be seamlessly integrated into our latest projects and appeal to retail clients and other designers alike.
Q What will the collection feature?
A Jenny: There are five main strands to the collection currently: furniture, indoor and outdoor cushions, rugs, and trimmings. The furniture was our starting point, with the addition of accessories to create a cohesive collection. Our main source of inspiration comes from nature, and is the central theme that flows through when you look at the materials used, the design details and textured finishes.
Q What projects do you look back on with fondness?
A Helen: We’ve had the pleasure of working on many wonderful projects over the years – too many to mention, really. If we had to pick one, perhaps the Zagaleta villa we completed nearly 15 years ago stands out. It was our first overseas project, introducing us to new territory and unique challenges. Yet, the final result was breathtaking. The clients, who remain dear friends to this day, were delightful to work with, and their reaction on handover day was unforgettable. It was an incredibly emotional moment, making the entire endeavour truly worthwhile.

Want your Hertfordshire home to be a haven of colour and style that you can relax in all year round?
With the right approach and a touch of creativity, you can transform your house into a harmonious masterpiece, inside and out, says Steve Rawding, sales and marketing director of leading South East home improvement company SEH BAC.
Imagine stepping into a home where every colour feels just right, where the ambiance shifts with the seasons, and where relaxation comes naturally. The key to creating this perfect balance lies in understanding the relationship between your home's interior and exterior. By carefully selecting colours that complement both the style of your property and its features, you can craft a cohesive look that flows effortlessly from room to room and from inside to out.
Let's start with the interior. The mood you wish to create will largely dictate your colour palette. Soft, neutral tones like whites, creams, and greys can create a serene, tranquil atmosphere perfect for unwinding after a long day. On the other hand, warm hues can inject energy and vibrancy into your living spaces, while cool tones offer a refreshing, calming effect.
But colour isn't just about paint on walls. Your windows and doors play a crucial role in tying together your home's overall look. The good news?
With the wide array of styles and colours available in modern home improvements, finding the perfect match for your Hertfordshire property has never been easier.
For those lucky enough to own a charming period property or cottage, heritage windows are an excellent choice. These windows beautifully marry the traditional aesthetics of wooden flush sash windows with the modern benefits of uPVC. They're a perfect way to maintain your home's historic
One of the most exciting trends in home improvement is the option for dual-colour combinations in windows and doors. This allows you to have different colours on the interior and exterior of your frames, offering ultimate flexibility in your design choices.
For instance, you might opt for a neutral grey or white on the inside to match your interior decor, while choosing a bold Cotswold or Chartwell green for the exterior to make a statement.
This versatility in colour choices extends to the entire range of windows and doors available, ensuring that regardless of your home's style – whether a cosy cottage or a sleek modern build – the perfect combination of colour and style is within reach.

The Bellagio sofa, designed by Anders Nørgaard, exudes elegance and cosiness. Channel stitching is becoming more and more popular, and the Bellagio uses it as inspiration to create something genuinely unique out of a classic silhouette. The Bellagio is anything but ordinary thanks to the depth and intricacy that the stitching adds, creating a visual rhythm that captivates you.
SCULPTURAL SOPHISTICATION:
Introducing the Tivoli Coffee Table
BoConcept has introduced Tivoli, a stunning line of sculpture-inspired coffee tables that draw inspiration from the classic elegance of travertine. Tivoli’s travertineeffect surface oozes elegance, and its Roman architectural character lends a hint of old sophistication to modern homes. Designer Morten Georgsen approached Tivoli with a creative playfulness reminiscent of his early Playdough modelling days. According to Georgsen: “It was a very creative process because we were sculpting from 3D designs in a very free way.” Coffee tables made with this technique are not only useful but also artistic creations. Any room is elevated by Tivoli’s striking design, which turns it into an elegant and stylish gallery.
Another standout piece from the collection is the Santiago dining table, with its enticing curves and exquisite craftsmanship. The round table, which can accommodate up to eight people comfortably, is very small in size and was designed with practicality in mind. Obstacles are removed by the base, which is a column instead of legs, and an amazing touch is added by the ceramic top, which comes in Ash Grey, Brown, and White. This innovative circular configuration for the Santiago table expands from 135 cm to 181 cm in diameter with covertly hidden expansion leaves. Santiago is the epitome of understated elegance.

The founder of Tobias Oliver Interiors on why he doesn’t follow fads – and why you shouldn’t either
As an established Interior Designer, I’ve learned that the world of design often feels like a whirlwind of fleeting trends and ever-changing fads. At Tobias Oliver Interiors, we proudly stand against the tide, choosing to champion designs that are subtly imbued with timeless elegance. You see, while it may be tempting to chase after the latest craze – like that neon green kitchen or the return of shag carpets –and believe me, we’ve loved some of those wacky moments in design history, the true art of creating sophisticated interiors lies in crafting spaces that endure and evolve with you.
First, let’s address the elephant in the room: trends. Trends are like that overly enthusiastic cousin at family gatherings – fun for a night, but best enjoyed in moderation. They can entice you with the promise of making your home look ‘in’, but often, they leave you with a design that feels dated in just a few years. Remember the bouclé craze? Or when ‘greige’ was everywhere? While these elements can work in certain situations, they’re not what we consider the backbone of timeless design. At Tobias Oliver Interiors, we believe that good design tells a story. It reflects the personality and history of its inhabitants and the surrounding environment. Our mission is to create spaces that feel comfortable, inviting, and, above all, like home – for years to come. To achieve this,
we prefer classic palettes, quality materials, and furniture pieces that blend effortlessly regardless of the passing seasons. After all, who wants to completely redesign their space every time a new trend pops up? Not only is it exhausting, but it’s also a walletemptying endeavour.
Adding a touch of humour to the mix, consider this: if your home looks like a Pinterest board threw up in it, you might want to reconsider your design choices. Timeless elegance is about subtle sophistication – a well-placed piece of art, the perfect shade of off-white (trust me, there are about a million), and a mix of textures that soothe the eye and the soul.
We often advocate for investing in quality over quantity. Choosing fewer, well-crafted pieces that resonate with your style can create a harmonious environment that doesn’t succumb to the perils of what’s ‘in’ or ‘out’. Our aim is to provide spaces that not only look beautiful, but also feel like you; somewhere you can kick back, relax, and maybe even slip into your favourite old joggers without fear of judgment.
In conclusion, at Tobias Oliver Interiors, we don’t just design spaces; we create environments that embrace the essence of timeless beauty. So, the next time you feel tempted by the latest design fad, remember elegance never goes out of style. And neither should your home.

SWR Home and Outdoor on seven reasons why now is the perfect time to invest in a new entrance or garage door
As the colder months approach, it’s an ideal time to consider investing in a new entrance door and garage door. These essential elements of your home not only play a crucial role in its curb appeal, but also its overall energy efficiency, security, and comfort. Buying a new front door or garage door (or both) this season can offer numerous benefits.
1. IMPROVED ENERGY EFFICIENCY
One of the most significant advantages of installing a new front or garage door in the autumn is the improvement in energy efficiency. Older doors often have gaps, cracks, or worn-out seals that allow cold air to seep into your home, leading to higher heating bills. Newer doors are designed with advanced materials and better insulation properties, ensuring that your home remains warm and cosy throughout the colder months. Insulated garage doors can make a big difference if your garage is attached to your home, as
they can prevent cold air from entering adjacent rooms.
2. ENHANCED SECURITY
Security is a top priority for any homeowner, and upgrading your doors can significantly enhance the safety of your home. Older doors, especially wooden ones, can become weak and more susceptible to break-ins over time due to wear and tear. However, modern doors are built with more robust, durable materials like steel, fibreglass, and reinforced wood, offering better protection against forced entry. Additionally, newer doors often come with advanced locking mechanisms and security features that provide extra protection.
3. INCREASED CURB APPEAL
The front door is often the focal point of a home’s exterior, and the garage door can take up a significant portion of your home’s facade. Replacing these doors can dramatically improve your home’s curb appeal, making it more attractive and inviting. With a wide variety of styles,
colours, and materials available, you can choose a door that perfectly complements your home’s architectural style and enhances its overall aesthetic. This is especially important if you’re considering selling your home in the future, as an attractive exterior can increase its market value and appeal to potential buyers.
Over time, your doors can become difficult to open and close due to wear and tear on the hinges, tracks, or mechanisms. A new door will not only operate smoothly, but also offer improved functionality. For garage doors, modern options include automated systems with remote control access, keypads, and even smartphone integration. For entrance doors, features like keyless entry systems and smart locks add convenience, allowing you to unlock your door with a code or even remotely via your phone. These modern touches can make daily life easier, especially during winter when fumbling with keys in freezing temperatures is less than ideal.
Newer doors are designed to withstand the elements, making them more durable and resistant to the wear and tear that comes with seasonal changes. For instance, fibreglass and steel doors are less likely to warp, crack, or rot compared to older wooden doors, which can deteriorate over time due to moisture and temperature fluctuations.
Moreover, modern doors require less maintenance. Many come with fi nishes that resist fading, peeling, or rusting, so you won’t need to worry about frequent painting or repairs.
If you live in a busy neighbourhood or near a main road, a new door can help reduce the amount of noise that enters your home. Modern doors with better insulation not only keep the cold out but also act as a sound barrier, providing a quieter, more peaceful indoor environment.
By reducing the amount of energy needed to heat your home, you’re lowering your carbon footprint. Additionally, many modern doors are made from sustainable materials or are recyclable at the end of their lifespan, further contributing to environmental conservation.
Investing in a new entrance or garage door offers numerous benefits that extend beyond just improving your home’s appearance. From enhanced energy efficiency and security to increased curb appeal and convenience, a new door can significantly impact your home’s comfort and value. As the colder months set in, there’s no better time to upgrade your doors and enjoy their many advantages.

Q Were you always destined for a career in interior design?
A No, not directly. This has been a growing journey over time! I have studied Graphic Design with photography as my main subject in the Netherlands, then followed up with a course in Product and Spatial Design at Central St Martins in London. All these different elements have taught me to look at the world in different ways, to understand the importance of balance and colour use through experiencing this in different fields.
Q What makes you different?
A I’m a French born, Dutch educated and now an English based interior designer. Many different influences in life have made me the woman I am today. From a passion for modernist architecture picked up from the Netherlands with unmistakable Scandinavian design touches, to the charming English historical ways of living, have all influenced me in my interior design passions.
Hitchin-based Charlotte Bucciero Interiors on her diverse background and approach to interior design
With a passion for travel and culture, architecture, colour and furniture – it is not surprising that everything and anything has an interest to me.
Q Which project during your career stands out for you the most and why?
A I love our collaboration projects with architects where a home undertakes a full design process both internally and externally, working harmoniously together. This includes celebrating the existing architectural features of the home, whilst complementing these in the new or extended parts to come. It is especially exciting when this requires playful design features either in shape, material use or colour use.
Q What do you love about Hitchin?
A Hitchin has a thriving creative community with talented individuals and businesses coming together to share their skills and knowledge. As an interior designer, I love collaborating with other local creatives in the industry. Working alongside architects, garden designers, furniture makers, kitchen
designers and interior photographers at my 18th century Bancroft based studio is a fantastic way to share ideas, gain inspiration, and bring fresh perspectives to my work. It is a great way to create a supportive network of fellow creatives who share similar passions and interests in and around Hertfordshire.
Q What does the future hold in store?
A We are looking to grow our local network and clientele in the years to come. It is important to us as a design company to stay approachable in size, whilst producing exciting and interesting work for our clients. We have found that this works best when collaborating with the right people for the right job!
The importance of being environmentally friendly in our design choices through sourcing locally where possible is an element of our business we are looking to expand. We try to achieve this through our flooring, paint and fabric suggestions as well as using local tradespeople where possible.

“Hardware has the power to transform a room”
he door handle is the handshake of the building,” said Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa. And it’s true: consider the difference between a limp, lifeless gesture and a solid, confident welcome, and apply that to your front door. Hardware is often neglected, but it’s undeniable that ugly or flimsy door handles can significantly cramp the style of even the most beautifully decorated home. Nobody knows this better than designer Matilda Goad, who is a leader in a small market for stylish hardware pieces. “Hardware has the power to transform a room; whether updating an existing piece of furniture or it being integral to the design of a space, it’s a small product with big impact,” she says. Her MG&Co collections take on a signature playful form with colourful lacquered knobs, handles and hooks in varying styles and sizes, complemented with brass and nickel backplates available in a multitude of shapes.
Whether investing in hardware at the beginning of a project, or looking for a finishing
touch, hardware plays a pivotal role in bringing a space together to create a home.
Built on ‘timeless homewares for modern living’, Matilda Goad & Co. started with a signature Scallop Lampshade and expanded to indorporate a thoughtful collection of unique homeware, offering a contemporary spin on interior classics. With an emphasis on pieces that offer both personality and purpose, Matilda pulls inspiration from daily rituals, designing homewares to spark joy. From rainbow coloured cutlery and lacquered trays to tole planters, beeswax candles and ceramic jugs, Matilda Goad & Co. products fill the homes of fashion insiders and interiors aficionados alike. A particular hit has been the brand’s giant ceramic clam shells, which regularly rack up waiting lists in the hundreds – a fitting testament to Matilda’s ability to tap into the Zeitgeist.
In 2020 Matilda launched The Dispatch, a monthly letter landing in subscribers’ inboxes offering the designer’s take on building a happy home. Crafted through the same idiosyncratic lens as Matilda’s products, the letter comprises practical advice from how to care for your linen, to life hacks and sourcing tips. The Dispatch opens the door into her world, with the hope of helping to fill the spaces that objects can’t

The new school term may be under way, but many Hertfordshire schools - and studentsare still basking in the warm glow of results day for GCSEs and A-levels. Inside, three local schools highlight what a successful couple of days it was, throwing the spotlight on those students who went above and beyond with their results.
Recently celebrating its 150th anniversary, Lockers Park continues to be forward-thinking, as headteacher Gavin Taylor explains
Q Can you give us a brief history of Lockers Park?
A Lockers Park has just celebrated its 150th year of educating young men, preparing them for the challenges they will face in life. We pride ourselves on providing an individualised education that remains relevant to the future, giving our boys strong academic and personal foundations to build upon. Throughout our history, we’ve nurtured many distinguished individuals, and our alumni continue to contribute to the school’s unique atmosphere. This "magic" creates an educational experience that our boys remember with great fondness, feeling part of something truly special.
Q Today, what does the school o er?
A Lockers Park o ers a traditional education with a modern outlook. We are focused on the future, instilling good habits in our boys to ensure their success, whatever field they choose. Our collaboration with senior schools and employers emphasises the development of the whole child. Retaining our independence allows us to send boys to schools where their interests can develop and their passions can flourish, placing them in a strong position for future success.
Q How has the school changed in that time?
A The school has evolved and continues to do so. We embrace change and recognise that boys today need a di erent education than in the past. However, some aspects of the school remain constant. We cherish the history and traditions that are integral to our boys’ development. Our goal is to nurture young men who are considerate, respectful, resilient, and who develop a lifelong love of learning.
Q Can you sum up your approach to teaching?
A I believe in developing the whole child through inspirational teaching and diverse opportunities. We encourage our boys to love challenges, seek out information, create their own theories, and question what they read and are taught. These skills are increasingly essential in today’s world, where boys are exposed to vast amounts of information – often unreliable – via social media. They need the confidence to question theories and make informed decisions that they and their families can be proud of.
Q What might we find at Lockers Park that is a little di erent from the norm?
TAYLOR
A Lockers Park o ers several distinctive features that set us apart. Our personalised approach to education, combined with a small student body, allows boys to excel in a variety of areas. The bond between sta and students is particularly strong, with our dedicated team committed to nurturing each boy’s growth and o ering education without limits. Our Learner Profile focuses on key skills that will drive our boys’ success, which they apply to all aspects of school life. The advantages of single-sex education are clear, allowing boys to develop at their

own pace without comparisons to girls. We embrace each boy’s unique learning style, fostering a hands-on approach that encourages them to explore the "why" of things. As they mature, they can ask questions freely, without fear of embarrassment, and pursue a wide range of activities without gender stereotypes. Our boarding environment further extends these opportunities, o ering a 12-hour day and an optional Saturday school program, providing everything needed for excellent results and a lifelong enthusiasm for learning.
Q Do you o er plenty outside of the classroom?
A Absolutely. We have a Director of Outdoor Learning, so we literally take education
beyond the classroom, whether it’s through Forest School, environmental activities, or re-enacting scenes from Harry Potter during guided reading. There’s a definite benefit to getting the boys outdoors. Beyond this, our boys enjoy an enviable range of opportunities, including excellent sports, unparalleled music, art, and drama programs. Our choir regularly competes and sings in Chapel, and we o er them the chance to travel – whether it’s visiting CERN, skiing, or examining volcanoes in Iceland. From 7.30am-7.30pm, the activities are endless: chess, debating, fencing, robotics, and many more. Our recent sports hall refurbishment, complete with a climbing
wall, fitness studio, and golf simulator, further enhances what we o er.
Q When pupils leave you, what do you hope they take with them?
A I hope our boys leave with a love of learning and the confidence to guide their future choices. We help develop self-belief and resilience, traits that set a Lockers Park boy apart from his peers. They’ve experienced diverse opportunities and discovered interests to pursue. My hope is that every boy leaves knowing they always have a home here and a family that will support and guide them, even years after they’ve moved on.

“The value of financial advice shines through”
The true value of financial advice extends far beyond the numbers on your bank statement or any balance sheet; it’s about securing your financial future while cultivating peace of mind along the way.
Financial decisions can be overwhelming, and the weight of managing one’s finances – whether personal and/or for a business – can lead to stress and anxiety. This is where the true value of financial advice becomes apparent. Imagine having a seasoned guide beside you, navigating the complex landscape of investments, budgeting, and savings. A financial planner becomes more than just an expert in numbers, they become a trusted friend, and a reassuring confidante. Financially it’s been a di cult few years for households: the cost of living
has risen substantially as inflation soared, and household energy bills skyrocketed. Meanwhile, investment markets have been choppy, which has been an additional source of stress for those planning their financial future. You may think no one can help, but it’s during the hard times that the value of financial advice can really shine through.
Everyone’s financial journey is unique, and a one-size-fits-all approach seldom leads to sustainable success.
A good financial planner will spend time with you to understand your specific circumstances, goals, and risk tolerance. They will then establish how realistic your aspirations might be in terms of your present circumstances and how your future is likely to pan out. Armed with this personalised information, they will craft a tailored financial plan
that aligns with your goals, fostering a sense of direction and purpose. A client and financial planner’s relationship will build over time and you will meet regularly to discuss what may have changed in your life and how this might a ect your future aspirations. Any issues can be discussed, and your financial plans updated as necessary to suit your changing circumstances. Life will always throw challenges at us, whether it be a new job, or redundancy, the birth of a new child and saving for their school or university fees, or your impending retirement.
