LETTER

Simon Wolf explains why working at the company was in his blood (p46)

Iowe some of my ex-colleagues an apology. Probably around a decade ago, I truly hated working on any festive issues. A quirk of the publishing world meant we were discussing turkey and trimmings, and parties and presents, in September – so when Christmas actually came around, I felt I had already lived it. So every time the Christmas issue planning meeting was called, I was a right old Scrooge and know I killed the good vibes. You live and learn. A lot has happened in the ten years since – especially the last couple of years, in particular – that anything that is designed to put a smile on your face should really do just that. Even though this isn't the actual Christmas issue, we have produced a special section looking at the early events in November to kick off the festive season in Sussex.

You see, I love it so much I do two festive issues now. Elsewhere, we have more good vibes to share.

We chat to Bethan Roberts about her novel, My Policeman, now becoming a movie starring a bona fide Hollywood heartthrob, plus dine out at the colourful Cyan in Brighton. Our cover star, the accessories of Wolf 1834, also put pay to any notion we are entering dark and dreary months. Don't worry, be happy.

KIEFER SUTHERLAND

CHALK, BRIGHTON, 28 NOVEMBER

In 2002, Kiefer Sutherland, with his music partner and best friend Jude Cole, began a small record label called Ironworks. Then in early 2015 Sutherland played Cole two songs he had written and wanted to record as demos for other artists to record. Cole responded positively to the songs and an album grew organically from those recordings. Two songs became four and four grew into six, until Cole suggested that they make a record. Their collaboration resulted in Kiefer Sutherland's upcoming debut album, Down In A Hole, which you can hear this month at Chalk. chalkvenue.com

hen Bethan Roberts first found out Harry Styles was interested in playing one of the leads in the adaptation of her 2012 novel, My Policeman, her reaction was somewhat subdued.

“To be honest I didn’t really have a clear picture of what that meant – I mean I’m a middle-aged bookish type, so although I knew who Harry Styles was, I was a little hazy on the details,” she tells me of a meeting with the film’s producers three or four years ago.

Back then, while Harry had been cast by Christopher Nolan in the 2017 film, Dunkirk, he was still better known as being one fifth of boyband, One Direction. Fast forward to 2022, however, and with hype surrounding another of the teen heartthrob’s films, Don’t Worry Darling, bubbling away, things are a little di erent. “I mean Harry Styles is playing the lead in the movie of my novel so that is incredible to me,” Bethan smiles.

WWe’re chatting in the week leading up to My Policeman’s UK premiere at Festival Hall in London, which Bethan is attending with her mum – “obviously neither of us have been on a red carpet so it’s really exciting,” she beams.

It’s not, however, the first time Bethan has seen the Michael Grandage-directed movie, in which Harry plays policeman

Brighton writer Bethan Roberts talks about seeing her 2012 novel, My Policeman, played out on the big screen, with Harry Styles in the title role

Tom, who marries teacher Marion (played by Emma Corrin) despite being in love with a museum curator called Patrick (David Dawson). At a time when being gay was still illegal, Tom introduces Patrick to Marion and the three share an intimate bond with the illicit love triangle playing out against the backdrop of 1950s Brighton.

“The performances are really good,” says Bethan, adding she was particularly pleased with the casting of David Dawson as Patrick. “Harry also fits the role [of Tom] really well because he is this sort of fantasy figure, incredibly handsome, everyone feels

like they know him but he’s mysterious, so he brings that to it, which I think is a really good thing. And Emma…. I love Emma, she was fantastic in The Crown.”

Bethan, who sold the film options to the book a couple of years after it was first published in the UK, hasn’t had any o cial involvement with the making of the movie, but says she has been ‘kept in the loop’ by the producers.

“I didn’t really believe it would get made,” she admits. “My agent told me one per cent of novels that have film options get made. Occasionally I would day dream, obviously,

but I didn’t really believe it. I didn’t allow myself to believe it because I didn’t want to be hugely disappointed that it didn’t happen.”

Despite never letting herself imagine the film as a movie, Bethan is pleased with the way it has played out on screen – particularly in the way her beloved Brighton is depicted.

“I’m really pleased that the film has been made and it looks amazing – it’s a beautifully shot film, the colours are gorgeous and Brighton looks fantastic,” says the motherof-one who has lived in Brighton since she was a student. “It’s quite understated in a way that is true to the novel, but it’s a

completely di erent thing obviously because it’s a movie, it’s got to be condensed. It is di erent to the novel, as it has to be.”

Bethan was inspired by the life of celebrated author EM Forster, who had a long, loving gay relationship with a married policeman called Bob Buckingham. “I often find historical research, particularly into the lives of real people, is really a fruitful area for me for producing fiction,” says Bethan, who has also written a book loosely based on Peggy Guggenheim’s life in Sussex, as well as a novel about Elvis Presley and the singer’s relationship with his mum, Gladys.

“At the end of Forster’s life, it was Bob’s wife, May, who was there holding his hand when he died, so I was interested in the complications of how you get to be holding the hand of your husband’s lover on his deathbed. That’s where the idea came from – me writing my way to that ending and trying to work out what that was about.”

Bethan tells me she had always wanted to set a novel in her adopted hometown and in My Policeman, she uses the contrast

between the more open, cosmopolitan city of Brighton, where the characters live when they are younger, and the suburban, more inward-looking retirement community of Peacehaven, where they live out their later lives. The beachfront plays a key role with Tom teaching Marion how to swim in the sea, as does Brighton Museum, where Patrick is a curator.

“I lived in the Hanover area of Brighton just before I wrote the book, so that appears a lot too, that’s where Marion lives,” adds Bethan.

“I actually often get people on Instagram sending me pictures of them on the beach in Brighton with the book or going around the various locations, which is so lovely.”

I ask if she thinks the release of the movie will boost sales of the book. “I certainly hope so,” she says. “Plus, the 10th anniversary edition has Harry Styles on the front cover, so that’s not bad is it?”

My Policeman 10th anniversary edition by Bethan Roberts is published by Vintage, RRP £.99. My Policeman is in cinemas now

• Before lockdown I was always writing in cafes, but I’ve lost the habit a bit now. However, I really like Tilt at Fiveways, which is close to my house, and I sometimes go to Rust on Preston Road, which has a lovely little garden and does a great egg on toast! I also love sitting at the cafe in the Pavilion Gardens.

• I really like going to Semolina restaurant on Baker Street. It’s very reasonably priced for the quality of the food and it feels intimate but not in a weird way.

• From where I live, I can walk up to Hollingbury Hillfort and you can see all over Brighton and across to the Downs. I particularly like walking from Firle to Charlston, I think it’s just beautiful. The landscape is quite sculptural but also pretty.

Get to know… EMILY EDWARDS

LEWES-BASED AUTHOR

Q The Herd describes the devastating fallout between friends after a white lie about childhood vaccination proves catastrophic.

As a new parent yourself, how di cult was it to write the very challenging scenes in The Herd a ecting small children?

A I go into a bit of a weird space when I’m in an intense writing zone and I was also writing The Herd during the first lockdown while I was pregnant with our second son. I often find it emotional and can be quite di cult to be around. I feel a lot of emotion for the characters, but I’m also aware that there’s another chapter coming so there’s a very practical mindset as well that needs to make sure the pace of the book is maintained and that my characters are going where I need them to go in order for the story to develop.

Q You started writing The Herd before the pandemic and finished writing it in lockdown; how much did talk of Covid vaccines and herd immunity influence its progress?

A Originally, I set the book in 2020, but I realised I couldn’t set my book then and not mention Covid so my agent suggested I set it in 2019, which I did. It ends just before Christmas in 2019 and I remember having this sense of doom for my characters thinking ‘they’ve got Covid just round the corner!’ I remember whilst I was writing it we were all so desperate for a Covid vaccine and because I didn’t have a publishing contract

in place – I was writing it speculatively – I was very much wondering ‘who is going to want to read about vaccination whilst we’re all going through all of this?’ It was either going to be on point or a bit like ‘let’s talk about something else now’ so I’m glad now that it’s about childhood vaccination rather than Covid.

Q Your books tackle big ethical issues – how important is it that you promote discussion in your books?

A This is definitely a niche that I’m going to continue writing in; I recently signed to write two further books with my publisher Transworld and I’m going to continue in this vein. If I’m going to spend however many years writing a book, I want to make sure I’m interested in the subject and that I’m going to learn something from it. I’m sure all

writers learn from their subjects in di erent ways, but it’s also the stu we find hardest to talk about that we find so fascinating. Vaccination is one of those subjects, so what I’m trying to do with my writing is have those conversations with myself and my characters, but also with the reader.

Q Did writing the book help you work through your own thoughts and feelings about vaccination?

A We did have a big question mark when we had our first son about whether or not to vaccinate. My husband was clearer on it than me, but he knew it was important for me to make that decision for myself so yes, it helped to do the research. We decided very early on to vaccinate and will continue to do so for both our sons.

Q Where do you like to go as a family in Sussex?

A We take the boys to Drusilla’s and Washbrooks Farm and recently we got a battery-operated cargo bike so we can put both the boys on the back and go up into the Downs for picnics. It’s a gamechanger as the boys are too big at two and four to be carried long distances, but they’re too small to go for a long walk so this way we can go as far as we like. When James and I do get to go out we like a trip to The Depot every now and then to see a film. I like to sea swim on my own whenever I can and I run on the Downs, which is often where I find I have good ideas

for writing; I’ll often go specifically to work through a problem I have with a scene.

Q Why did Lewes appeal to you when you were looking to move out of London?

A I was actually born in Rodmell, but we moved away when I was five due to my parents’ work. They’ve always had a great fondness for Sussex and some of my earliest memories are of things like the feel of a flint wall and the malty smell from the Harveys brewery and that came back to me really strongly when we visited Lewes again 30 years later! It was just supposed to be for a year, but it’s nearly six years now.

The Herd is out in paperback now and is a Richard and Judy pick. See more at emilyelgaredwards.co.uk

South of England Agricultural Society’s Autumn Show & International Horse Trials

At the end of September, over 17,000 people turned out to support the South of England Agricultural Society’s Autumn Show & International Horse Trials at the South of England Showground in Ardingly, West Sussex. It was the first time that the always popular Autumn Show & Game Fair had joined forces with the International Horse Trials to create one spectacular event, and it was a huge success for visitors and competitors alike.

In addition to the show’s existing programme of activities – such as gundog scurries, fly fishing, archery, axe throwing, ferret racing, and birds of prey displays – the event saw more than 500 horses competing in dressage, showjumping and cross-country phases.

Away from the main ring, in addition to masses of shopping opportunities, there were plenty of stalls from local and independent food producers for guests to enjoy. The Pumpkin Trail around the showground, and the Society’s Countryside Hub were a big hit with younger visitors.

Local farmers and smallholders supported the Animal Barn by bringing along their animals, which helped educate the public about their way of life and the di erent breeds, uses and care. The show was a true celebration of the countryside, showcasing country pursuits and traditional country skills.

The Society held a ceremony of thanksgiving in memory of its late Patron, Queen Elizabeth II, and had displays at the show recalling her visits in 1974, 1984 and 2002. These displays also pictured the trees the Society has planted at the showground as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, which was set up to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee.

IT’S BEHIND YOU

As well as Brighton Dome’s o ering outlined above, the county comes up trumps with its choice of panto this festive season. A selection of Eastbourne’s pantomime cast members assembled recently to launch this year’s show Aladdin at the Devonshire Park Theatre.

The cast included Martyn Knight, returning for his 19th outing in the fanciest frocks around as Widow Twankey, and Eastbourne’s favourite comic Tucker as Wishee Washee, plus Katherine Glover back as the hero in high boots, Aladdin, following her last outing in Jack and the Beanstalk in 2020, and Rebecca Lisewski who made casting wishes come true as Genie of the Ring. Plus, a new name for Eastbourne audiences, Miles Western as Abanazaar who will be expecting lots of hisses and boos as resident ‘baddie’ for the festive season.

There was also a photocall for the All New Adventures of Peter Pan cast, who flew into The Hawth to launch this year’s pantomime. On hand to get the festive fun going were

EastEnders’ Rita Simons as Captain Hook and CBBC and Strictly star Karim Zeroual in the title role of Peter Pan. They were joined, for his tenth year, by Crawley’s favourite Dame, Michael J Batchelor as Mrs Smee, the hilarious Richard Franks (Starkey), Kira MacCarter (Elizabeth Darling) and Rosanna Harris (Tinkerbell). Award-winning comedian and West End actor Katie Pritchard is bringing her bubbly personality to Jack and the Beanstalk, at Worthing’s Pavilion Theatre. Katie is a

woman of many talents. From her awardwinning comedy to her all-girl rock ‘n’ roll band The Daisy Chains, Katie has done it all. She’s been in both West End productions and on the television, she’s a writer and artist, and has created podcasts while appearing on others. In her own words, Katie is “a stupid idiot who likes to prance around, often with props, costumes, and musical instruments for fun. I have also run four marathons and one triathlon”.

The South of England Showground in Ardingly, West Sussex will once again play host to its annual Winter Fair this November. Running on 19-20 November, the Winter Fair provides visitors with the perfect opportunity to get the Christmas preparations started whilst enjoying some festive family fun.

With hundreds of shopping stalls from local, independent traders, the two-day event is truly a shopper’s paradise. Or, for those looking for unique gifts and stocking fillers, there’s everything from wooden toys, artwork, jewellery, lovingly produced leather and cashmere fashion, to natural soap, grooming gift sets, stunning home accessories, Christmas decorations and more.

FUN AT THE WINTER FAIR EXPLORING AT THE WEALD & DOWNLAND MUSEUM FISHBOURNE ROMAN PALACE

The Winter Fair is not just about shopping opportunities though, it can be a handson experience for every generation with wreath making workshops from My Little Flower Boutique and chocolate decoration workshops from Chocolate Genie.

Younger visitors can enjoy the funfair with vintage carousel, a giant snow globe where they can climb in and have a photo taken, various Christmas craft activities thanks to The Creation Station, meet Mistletoe the Elf, and of course Santa’s Grotto.

NOW FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT…

We don’t like covering the same old thing here at Absolutely Sussex, so to wrap up our Christmas special here’s a couple of

alternative things. First up are Christmas crafts at Fishbourne Roman Palace. This November the largest Roman home in Britain is opening its doors to the public for free for one day only as Fishbourne Roman Palace hosts its first Festive Craft Fayre.

On Saturday 19 November, visitors to the West Sussex heritage site, near Chichester, will be able to soak up 2,000 years of history free of charge while getting into the festive spirit and browsing dozens of stalls selling unique handmade gifts at the Palace’s first ever Christmas market.

A variety of local Sussex artists and craftspeople will be showing o their wares across the site, including in the Palace garden. There will be a range of food and drink stands providing delicious winter warmers, as well as fun Roman-themed activities for children.

Inside the Palace, visitors can marvel at the incredible display of stunning mosaics – the largest collection in situ in the UK – and explore the museum’s diverse range of artefacts, which tell the story of the Roman Empire’s conquest of Britain.

The Little Art Gallery in West Wittering is always happy to o er a wide range of artists work for that special memory or occasion, perfect for a Christmas gift with real meaning. They have over 60

artists with large and small paintings, seascapes, landscapes and abstracts, oils and acrylics, printmaking and textiles, glass artists, Pewter, ceramics, enamels and silver jewellery. They like to think they have something for all tastes and budgets from £3 to £5,000.

What’s more, the gallery can be opened especially for you. If you give them an idea of what you are interested in they can bring in extra works that are held o site. They are only a small space so opening for your own private view gives you plenty of time to look around and make your decision. If you cannot decide which to choose and you live within a 30-mile radius of the gallery, they are happy to bring a selection to your home to help you make your choice.

Last, but not least, join the Weald & Downland Living Museum in Chichester for Advent 26-27 November, a two-day event which includes an array of festive and family-friendly experiences exploring Christmas traditions from the past with live demonstrations and displays. There will also be a boutique Christmas market which will bring together over 100 handselected stall holders, showcasing a range of high-quality products all sourced from the local region, from arts and crafts to artisanal gifts. An early Merry Christmas!

Absolutely Sussex meets the chef behind the food at restaurant Cyan, which has big ambitions to add extra colour to Brighton’s dining scene

38 ABSOLUTELY magazines
Grand

As the days get shorter and chillier, one real advantage about the change in weather is that we can indulge once again in hearty Sunday roasts – and this is where Cyan, housed in the Grand Brighton hotel, excels. “We decided to run Sunday lunch throughout the day, which has had a great reaction from customers,” explains Neil Gooding, the man behind Cyan’s foodie operation. “We have many regulars who return simply for a Sunday roast, either for lunch or early dinner.”

It’s one example of how Cyan has had an innovative approach to their menus – there are plenty of places I have visited for a Sunday roast, only to be left disappointed when the last cut was sold at lunch. Their

Fish Fridays is also hugely popular, making full use of Cyan’s location, and a takeaway service is almost as good as the main event.

As much as we sometimes all like to eat at home, you’d be missing out on a real experience if you didn’t enjoy Neil’s food in the restaurant. The first thing that strikes you when entering Cyan is the wonderful design. “The name Cyan originates from the green-blue colour which is featured throughout the restaurant,” Neil explains. “The design inspiration not only comes from the colour, but for us it is also where land meets sea with the combination of fresh local fish and seafood, and great meat dishes.

“Guests are guaranteed an indulgent dining experience no matter what they choose,” Neil continues. “We have live cooking, which showcases the great talent we have and creates a brilliant interaction with sta and guests. It is also important that we have a key focus on exciting seasonal menus and dishes that change frequently, so diners can always try something new when visiting.”

How would Neil sum up the style of cooking we can expect at Cyan? “Our cooking style is a mix of modern European dishes, with some classics added in which continue to remain popular,” he says. “We focus mainly on flavour combinations, which is key to our success. It helps us create better seasonal o erings utilising local produce.

“We have a big focus on local suppliers,” Neil points out. “Due to our location next to the sea, we are not short on choice of fish suppliers. Brighton also has some fantastic

artisan suppliers for meat and cheese. This a real luxury on our doorstep and it’s vital that we help local businesses to thrive.”

Neil is excited to talk about are some of the dishes recently unveiled on a menu that he’s been loving. “We have some vegetarian starters that are popping with seasonal flavours,” he smiles. “For example, warm maple glazed pumpkin and squash with chestnut puree, panko crumbed cheese, and micro salad from our herb grower. There is also a new chicken dish, bursting with flavours, which we predict will be really popular: a roasted chicken with crispy tru e and potato terrine, wild mushrooms, baked onion with parsnip puree, crispy kale and chicken sauce.”

It’s the perfect appetiser for the fastapproaching festive season, which looks set to be a memorable experience at Cyan.

“The Grand Brighton is the place to be at Christmas,” Neil insists, “we really get into the festive spirit. At Cyan, we are o ering festive-themed menus, as well as our take on a Christmas afternoon tea, which is served in our grand Victoria Terrace and Lounge – the perfect pre-Christmas treat.

“We are also o ering guests the chance to stay at our iconic seafront hotel to experience a magical festive getaway from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day,” he adds. “Let The Grand take care of everything with sumptuous food, entertainment and magical treats for the children, whilst you can stay in a beautiful bedroom with sea views and enjoy a fun-filled itinerary of treats.” Bring on those colder, darker days we say.

Kinsbrook launches Kinsbrook Farmhouse: a brand new farm shop and eatery in West Sussex

Progressive West Sussex vineyard, Kinsbrook, has opened the doors to its new farm shop and eatery. Open seven days a week, visitors can expect superb local produce and delicious seasonal dishes in a picturesque vineyard setting.

The Kinsbrook Farmhouse will boast a fresh butchery counter using only local, ethically and sustainably-sourced meats, a deli counter with a wide range of antipasti, local flowers, artisan cheeses, a selection of fine wines, craft ciders and spirits, fresh produce and much more – all fully supporting the local community.

Upstairs, the laid-back eatery will o er a considered brunch and lunch menu from Wednesday to Sunday, masterminded by Head Chef Greg Round of Spring London and Bonhams. On the other days of the week, customers will still be able to enjoy a co ee or glass of wine with a small and simple food o ering.

The menu will feature small, carefully curated plates of food using only the best, sustainably-sourced produce which will change regularly depending on what is available and in season.

Located in a newly built barn in the heart of the vineyard, in-keeping with a traditional Sussex barn style, you will be able to enjoy a meal and a glass of wine on the balcony overlooking the vines with the South Downs as your backdrop.

There’s always something going on at Kinsbrook: daily tours and tastings, ‘The Sunday Sessions’ on Sundays which showcase local live music, Supper Clubs and even the occasional Harvest Party.

Led by Joe Beckett and Rebecca Dancer, Kinsbrook is creating an exciting range of hand-crafted wines from grapes grown on its third-generation farmland. Kinsbrook is an experience-led vineyard focused on enabling people to drink English wine where it was grown and matured. Favouring minimal-interventionalist, regenerative practices both in the vineyard and winemaking processes, Kinsbrook is continuing to promote sustainability through Kinsbrook Farmhouse.

Renowned for its luxury watch winders, WOLF has recently moved into fashion accessories too. We catch up with the fifth generation CEO of the business to find out more

46 Q & A
ABSOLUTELY magazines

As a five-generation family company, WOLF understand that extraordinary objects are representations of extraordinary moments in life. Since 1834 the WOLF mark has been a symbol of decades of innovation and the pursuit of the perfect design. They believe for a legacy to endure it must be nourished and upheld. Every day in beautiful WOLF cases around the world, centuries-old treasures live side-by-side with exquisite new designs. They are dedicated to honouring people’s stories and the priceless jewellery and timepieces they entrust to them.

The company is also moving with the times, as their Mimi Collection caught Absolutely Sussex’s eye recently. Mimi is for the woman on the go who needs her essentials close but wants to be free of bulky handbags. lnspired by both high fashion runway moments of the 90s and ancient Japanese Sagemonos, Mimi helps you travel light so you can go about your day in style. With luxe leather pieces for storing earpods, phones, keys and credit cards, Mimi keeps your essentials safe and conveniently at your fingertips. With a showroom in West Sussex, we decided to speak to Simon Wolf – the fifth generation CEO of WOLF – to find out more about the company’s history, why they set up home in the county and what’s still to come.

Q What was Philip Wolf I’s original vision?

A As a silversmith in Hanau, Germany in 1834, he wanted to create things of beauty. When he started making boxes for his jewellery, he realised safe-keeping jewellery in a beautiful box was his calling.

Q What were his early creations?

A Back in 1834 his boxes were simple and elegant. Those creations would be almost 200 years old today and alas none have survived.

Q Was the company always going to pass down through the generations?

A Hindsight gives you an almost perfect perspective! I think it is more about destiny for a company, for a person, I believe it was

always the destiny of WOLF to become a multi-generational brand, the course was set 188 years ago, it was just going to happen.

Q When did you first start working for the business?

A I was 20 and under the tutelage of Tony Cook, our sales representative for the South East. After three months on the road, I had my lightbulb moment when I knew the business was for me. I went to work in the factory, on the production lines, warehouse, sample making, experiencing all departments. The process was fascinating, and I fell in love with it all.

Q Why did you open a showroom in West Sussex?

A I lived in America for more than 30 years. My wife, Fiona, and I had always planned to come home to the UK permanently, and lockdown gave us that opportunity. We bought a cottage right by the sea in Climping. Having both grown up in the countryside – me in Surrey, Fiona in Sussex – we wanted to return to where we felt the most at home. We are surrounded by fields, hedgerows, woods with the beach just a short walk away. Positioning the o ce within half an hour from where I live was an easy decision to make. London? No thanks!

Q Today, what is the ethos behind WOLF?

A We craft the spaces where legacies live. That beautiful heirloom piece of jewellery, the watch that was a reward to yourself. Precious things that are handed down need to be cared for and maintained, and that is what we do.

Q What have been the biggest changes in the evolution of the company?

A I started my career when we were still using Telex to send messages! Communicating as it has evolved over the decades is perhaps the biggest challenge. Our brand is stronger than ever, but giving the company that voice and being consistent was, and still is, one of the biggest challenges.

SIMON WOLF

Q Why should we own a WOLF Watch Winder?

A First and foremost our winders are a thing of beauty, melding great design with something very practical. Our winders are the only ones in the world that count turns per day, an innovation we patented. Every watch brand specifies exactly how many rotations a watch should be turned and in which direction. Our watch winders can be set to do exactly what you require.

Q What are the latest releases?

A We have just released “The Rocket”, the world’s smallest travel watch winder. It fits into the palm of your hand, so travels e ortlessly in an overnight bag or suitcase.

Q What can we expect with the design of your watch boxes and jewellery storage?

A Our design ethic is always, always, to make something that is beautiful, practical and solves a problem; helping you care for your watches or your jewellery. Many years ago we developed a solution called LusterLoc™ – we treat all our jewellery care product linings with this liquid and once the lid of the

box is closed or travel case zipped it stops jewellery losing its lustre for up to 35 years.

Q How important are accessories to your company?

A Luxury accessories, small leather goods, are a new venture for us. I had always wanted to design a collection, but held back until now.

Q How would you describe the W and Mimi ranges?

A W is our wallet and business case collection, made from responsibly sourced leathers, it is our classic range that we believe will be timeless. Mimi is a fresh, bright accessories collection that took its design cues from the Japanese “inro” cases that were worn over the obi (sash) around a kimono.

Q How long have you created safes?

A We have been designing and building safes for almost six years. The Atlas collection has been tested by Underwriters Laboratories in the USA and has passed the most stringent of tests. What makes them so unique is the almost limitless configurations of drawers and winders that you can place inside.

Q Do you have any exciting collaborations on the horizon?

A Yes we do, but mum’s the word for now!

Q What’s next for the company?

A As the brand continues to grow it is all about telling the WOLF story of five generations and that the care and thought of what we design and make, all by hand, means that we will continue to keep those precious possessions safe for generations to come.

MOMENTS

Buying an engagement ring is a daunting prospect. Melanie Wakefield, managing director at luxury jewellers Wakefields, o ers some inside knowledge

The most wonderful time of the year is upon us. Now, more than ever before, Christmas is the new Valentine’s Day with many choosing to pop the question, says Melanie Wakefield, managing director of Wakefields Jewellers.

“It’s so busy on the run up to the festive season,” she smiles. “The romance and cosiness combined with family and friends’ gatherings make it peak proposal time. Many customers conceal their dazzling rings in Christmas baubles, advent calendars and crackers!”

Colourful gemstones, vintage nostalgia, or a three-stone ring – where does one start when it comes to selecting this monumental purchase? “Do your homework when it comes to your design, gain a strong idea of what you want and visit a jewellers’ to try them on,” Melanie advises.

“What you see in a magazine or on a celebrity won’t necessarily work for you or your spouse-to-be, so it’s good to try on various styles. I always o er di erent shapes, metals, and stones so clients can see what looks right. Most brides are moving away from platinum and want yellow golds and warmer metals.

“I am sourcing a lot of stones right now; teal sapphires, pear and marquee shapes are a huge trend,” explains Melanie. “Most customers want something di erent and unusual. They want a story and something that no-one else has. Unusual gemstones are sought after as no-one has them – they are rare. Family stones handed down through the generations is also commonplace. As for wedding rings –we virtually never sell a plain band.”

When it comes to picking the engagement ring to adorn the finger of your soon-tobe spouse, Melanie says: “People need to remember this ring is for the rest of their life so it shouldn’t be swayed by fashion – opt for a timeless look. This type of ring is made to last, but regular maintenance is necessary.”

Creating a bespoke engagement ring can typically take, from the date of order to the ring being finished, around six weeks. “The quickest I have created a bespoke piece is two weeks, but I’d normally allow six weeks,” Melanie adds. “It takes about three visits from start to finish. A client would come for their first appointment to discuss the design, and this is the time to tell me everything they want. I can follow up with a quote.

“I use CAD modelling to show the client

what their ring will look like,” she continues. “Nothing is unexpected and everything is detailed, the certificate and the price. We provide lovely photography of the ring and an evaluation for their insurance company; we can even arrange insurance for them.”

With all these emotional purchases Melanie is often moved to tears by her clients’ reactions, she reveals. “I recently had a client who chose an engagement ring on his own. He showed me photos of his bride-to-be and pictures of pieces from her jewellery box. He chose a single diamond with diamond shoulders – it was so delicate and pretty. It was perfect for her. He sent me a video of the proposal, which took place on a beach in the Isle of Skye, and she flashed her ring and I found myself crying!

“The best bit of my job is seeing their faces when I present the ring. You can tell when they love it, and it is so heart-warming. I am so lucky to be part of their love story.”

Runway looks

1

TAILORED EDGE Isabel Sanchis

We're delighted to see a new crop of sharp separates in the mix for the season ahead – perfect for less formal or two-event celebrations and for brides who prefer to stride down the aisle in... strides. Isabel Sanchis, as ever, gets the look spot on with this long-line white blazer and form-flattering trousers. We love the edgy safety-pin fastening, a discreet nod to the punk-bride spirit.

2

BALLROOM SPIRIT Pronovias

There are plenty of ballgown and regal styles in the mix for the season to come, and some of our favourites have a 1950s vibe. This Hollywood-worthy number from Pronovias taps into that trend. It channels this season's focus on big sleeves – many, like these, are detachable for a quick change of style. It also introduces a welcome pop of glitter on the bodice and is created from rich silk in soft pastel pink.

3

SHARP SHIFT

Jesús Peiró

There are plenty of cool bridal looks for the resort or high-summer celebrations among the new season designer collections, but this shift dress caught our eye for its wearability and throw-on elegance. With a subtle hi-low hemline to show o your wedding heels, it has a gorgeous cutout lace panel to add interest and highlight that tan. Pockets add a laidback vibe to a dress that would earn its keep on honeymoon too.

4 ICE MAIDEN Vestal

The Barcelona Bridal Week runway glittered during couturier Vestal's runway show, with some deliciously detailed gowns in the mix. This one tapped into an ongoing trend for regal gowns. The elegant highneck, half-sleeve bodice studded with flower embellishment is paired to a shimmering full skirt with more trailing flowers to emphasise the waist. The soft silvery hue of the gown adds to the showstopping e ect – definitely a gown fit for a princess.

This gown channels an almost 1930s film-star vibe with its long sleeves and neat cu s. But the plunge neck and on-trend cutaway detail around the midri are relaxed elements that make it a great choice for glamorous destination brides. rosaclara.es

BUTTONED UP Nicolas Montenegro

A new name on the runway at Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week, Nicolas Montenegro is one to watch. Trained in Milan, he worked at a top design house (dressing Beyoncé and Kylie Minogue) and started his eponymous brand in his home village outside Seville in 2020. We just love his collection with its hallmarks of superb tailoring, clever details and form-flattering lines. SHEDDING LIGHT

Alittle-known fact is that 18 October is World Menopause day. Fifty per cent of the population will go through this phenomenon at some point in their life, yet little is known about it and even less done to mitigate the problems it causes. Menopause is the cessation of a woman’s natural monthly menstrual cycle at an average age is 51. However, it’s not just periods that stop, lots of other symptoms and complications can occur. It is known that after the menopause women are more at risk of osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease and several other major conditions. An all-party parliamentary group (APPG) has launched an investigation into the diagnosis and management of the menopause, which remains a postcode lottery. Women are su ering horrendous symptoms and have no access to diagnosis let alone treatment (which may include hormone replacement therapy - HRT). Modern HRT is easy, convenient and very safe to take, yet it is still surrounded by many misconceptions. The APPG have advised that: “The NHS must implement a health check for all women at the age of 45, in a similar way to cervical cancer smears.” However, this remains some way o .

Q What is wabi sabi?

A This is a di cult question to answer. In my experience even the Japanese people that I have spoken to are unwilling to engage in a deep conversation about wabi sabi. The general consensus is that wabi sabi is an aesthetic that focuses on the e ect of time and experience. It celebrates the beauty in the patina of life. In some ways, finding beauty within the weathering e ect of time’s passage is a skill which allows one to rally against the current tide of avoiding the cycle of life.

Andrew Juniper, who founded the Wabi Sabi business, wrote: "Wabi sabi is an intuitive appreciation of a transient beauty in the physical world that reflects the irreversible flow of life in the spiritual world. It is an understated beauty that exists in the modest,

rustic, imperfect, or even decayed, an aesthetic sensibility that finds a melancholic beauty on the impermanence of things."

Q Have you noticed a growing interest in Japanese interiors?

A I think that Japan always holds an interest. Because of their history, the culture was allowed to evolve without the influences of the west and I felt the most foreign whilst in Japan. It is not an easily accessible culture and doesn’t have some of the other Asian countries ease for tourism. That said the times that I have visited, I have found the people very welcoming and eager to share their culture and way of life. I think this was aided by being with Andrew and Kuniko [Kataoka, Wabi Sabi designer], who both

speak the language and had lived in Tokyo. Interest in the Japanese crafts, processes and interiors have become much more accessible through social media and we have noticed a growing knowledge of the Japanese approach to interior design through these channels.

Q How great was it to be involved with the London Olympics a decade ago?

A It seems like a lifetime ago now, but when we were asked to design and make the Japanese athletes’ breakfast and chill out areas we jumped at the chance. The home Olympics was something we were excited about without being directly involved, but to be asked was such a privilege and I hope that we managed to provide a space the helped the athletes feel more at home.

Q Today, how do you approach a new commission?

A Our approach changes based on the needs of our potential clients. Some have a deep and full understanding already of Japanese design and interiors and know what can be expected, whilst others come to us without that knowledge and it provides an opportunity for us to share our understanding of Japan and its design solutions. I like to think that with all our commissions, we approach them with a hope to achieve something beautiful that provides a solution for our clients’ needs.

Q Do you have a couple of examples of exciting recent commissions?

A We have been involved in a beautiful project recently converting an apartment in the Barbican, London, into a Japanese living area. We were asked to make some stand-alone speakers to go with our interior in a 1930s Japanese café style. These were made in elm with speaker cloth sourced from Japan that was manufactured in the 30s. I love working with materials created by other people that are so full of soul.

Q How long have you been based in Halnaker?

A Andrew started making furniture from a converted cow shed in Donnington about 20 years ago. I joined in 2007 and we had to extend the workshop to create space for new machines. We started to take on bigger projects and it became apparent that the workshop was too small to house some of the work we were doing. The opportunity to buy two large workshops with some land in

Halnaker came up in 2012 and we jumped at the chance. There was an old chicken shed which was on its last legs, so we took the building down pretty much with just the three of us (Josh Kennard worked with us then and now runs Forge Creative from a workshop that Wabi Sabi rents to him). Then we had a building designed that was able to house a 50kw solar system on the roof. This was produced by a company in Birmingham and came to Halnaker flat packed. We then had the job of erecting it. We now have a workshop, in a beautiful setting, that is powered by solar for much of the year. We share the site with other skilled makers, furniture makers and wood and metal workers so there’s an inspiring vibe.

Q Do you work on many projects in Sussex?

A Because of the shop location being in central Chichester, Andrew’s initial commissions were based in and around the city. Some of the people that acquired Andrew’s work became patrons of Wabi Sabi. We are still making furniture now for clients in Sussex who have become great friends, 20 years after their first commission.

After having some of his work seen by a company that specialised in high tech electrical installation in renovations mainly in London, Andrew started to make fitted furniture whilst continuing to make standalone pieces. I joined and we had a lot of work in London, we install all of our work so we visit lots of di erent properties.

Q What’s next for Wabi Sabi?

A A philosophy that we try to keep at Wabi Sabi is to keep aiming for the Nth degree. Always try to improve our products and make them as well as we can to ensure their quality and lifespan. I hope the future holds some more projects, full of spirit and craft, that we are able to contribute to. Andrew and I spent some time in Toyama with a craftsman called Kenji Komatsu. He taught us the art of sharpening and setting a Japanese plane blade and then the use of such a beautiful tool. We are running short courses now to try and show people here how to use and set a Japanese plane too.

All the TRIMMINGS

Adding a trimming to your furnishings adds that extra wow factor, elevating the ordinary to the extraordinary, and they are very much in vogue!

Starting with curtains and blinds, you can use the plainest of fabrics, and by the addition of a decorative braid will elevate the curtains and trick the eye in making the room feel higher in proportion.

If you are looking for something a little more subtle, or traditional, decorative tassel fringes look lovely when added to the edge of a curtain, or choose a drop bead, ru e or fan edge trim in a complementary colour to your fabric, and use a tieback for an elegant drape to maximise the impact.

Likewise on pelmets, a plain straight pelmet with a braid along the edge, or framing the box, is a very smart look. With shaped pelmets opt for a contrasting cord piping to really accentuate its shape and use it to trace its form and continue it down onto the curtain for maximum designer impact. Bobble fringes are a lovely way to make your room more playful, or soften it with a pretty fan edging.

A very popular trend is trimmed cushions. Plain fabrics can be used as a base for the most beautiful of braids, sitting these on a plain sofa and they will become a focal point. There are also a plethora of gorgeous ruches, and lovely flu y trims that can be used for piping cushions, and also great on headboards. Together with the more traditional tassel fringing or the delightful pompom trim is equally at home on cushions as it is on curtains. Leather, or faux leather is also a smart alternative to traditional fabric piping.

Fringes not only work to introduce movement and texture into a scheme, they can also be used to disguise unloved features such as sofa legs. Without them, furnishings will look good but with them, they will look outstanding.

Another great design detail to finish o your lampshade neatly, trimmings can be attached to cover the fabric edging of your made to measure shade.

Choose colours to complement the fabric of your shade or lamp base and look to beaded fringe or intricate gimp for a more traditional feel. Alternatively, coloured braids, playful tassels and extra-long fringing can transform your lighting into a fun and modern centrepiece within your room that will double up as a design feature that is completely unique to your home.

Adding trimmings to your furnishing will help to tie these standalone pieces into the rest of your scheme. Whether it be through pattern or colour, trimmings can establish a connection between multiple items that appear within a single scheme.

WHAT’S COOKING

Ashley Jay give us a sneak peak at their latest kitchen photoshoot and explain a little about the trends displayed in this stunning kitchen design

BRIGHT WARM TONES

Grey has been sidelined as the new neutral for softer warmer shades of owhite, putty, stone and muted terracotta. These tones are timeless and remain fresh whilst being inviting and restful, they make a great base for many colour schemes, but pair particularly beautifully with woods and fresh whites. Avoid anything with too much yellow in it if you want a modern take on these tones

In this kitchen the client complemented the cabinetry with white walls and a warm feature ceiling painted in Farrow and Ball ‘Faded Terracotta’. By adding the colour to the ceiling, the cool white light that streams in through the velux windows is warmed to an enticing glow.

EARTHY NATURAL STONE TEXTURES

Tying in with the palette of ‘warm neutrals’, worktop companies are introducing an increasing number of matt finishes which beautifully reference natural stones. Whilst the marble look has been popular for some time, many of these new finishes are warmer, more golden or darker referencing limestone, soapstone and slate with di erent textures and markings. This o ers customers a wider selection to ensure their kitchen stands out from the crowd, whilst feeling calm and enticing by referencing nature and all its beautiful qualities. Caesartone’s new ‘Porcelain’ and ‘Pebbles’ collections are great examples of this emerging trend. Alternatively, if you do not want quartz or porcelain worksurfaces, this client opted for Corian’s ‘Natural Aggregate’ finish on their sink run and tied this in with soft grey tiles on their central room pillar.

WOOD VENEER UNITS

Wooden cabinetry has long been used in traditional kitchens, but it is now seeing a strong resurgence in modern ‘slab door’ kitchens like this latest design. Whether you opt for deep walnut, mellow oak or cooler Scandi tones, using real wood veneer or wood-look laminates, timber can add depth and richness to any design. Combining materials has been increasingly popular recently and the addition of wood can enhance warm or cool palettes whilst introducing additional texture and tactility. Laminate options have also improved hugely in recent years and can provide a great alternative if wood veneers are too costly. For those who are unsure about committing to wood on their cabinetry another option is to add the timber tones to the flooring, dining table and other freestanding furniture. Just make sure tones tie in with each other if you are using multiple timbers, and to combine your wood with other finishes to ensure you don’t overload the space – think modern mixed materials, not ski-chalet sauna!

WALK-IN PANTRIES

Many older houses can have awkward nooks and crannies which make great spaces for walk-in pantries, but in newer extensions these spaces may need to be created through clever design as Ashley Jay has done here. By borrowing some space from the client’s utility and wrapping the tall cabinetry round a corner, a secret hidden larder has been carefully created. This allows the family a vast shelving area to conceal all food and supplies in one space, with an added worksurface for prep when needed. For those without this much space, another option is to insert a smaller larder cupboard into your room, inside which you could add a piece of worktop, drawers below and shelves above. By installing a simple socket in the back this cupboard can then become a place to store food and hide away the odd small appliance, keeping worksurfaces clear: something helpful to every small kitchen.

OPEN-PLAN MULTI-USE SPACES

This trend isn’t going anywhere soon. We are continuing to open up our houses to create larger open-plan rooms which combine kitchen, dining and soft seating. This large extension o ers plenty of space for all three zones, but Ashley Jay explains that you can still achieve a similar result even if you do not have a large new extension. In fact, opening up existing walls between rooms can work just as well, creating L-shape spaces which lend themselves to these three separate zones. For smaller spaces, adding a reading chair in a corner or seating to an island can also provide that flexibility that we so often demand of our rooms, and give guests and family a place to work, play and interact whilst you cook. After all, the kitchen really should be the heart of every home.

Part of a strong boarding culture is ensuring that every pupil's voice is heard, recognised and acted upon. Understandably, even from a young age children have a tremendous sense of justice, fantastic ideas and a keenness to play an active role in their school community. Boarding, more than any other aspect of school life, must be inclusive – something that Windlesham House School thrive on doing. Turn to page 96.

MAKE A

PLEDGE

Are you taking the Veg Pledge this month? You may or may not know that Veg Pledge is an initiative founded by Cancer Research UK to invite you to ditch meat for a month. Not only is it a way to help raise funds for the charity, but also to educate and remind us of the importance of vegetables and fruit for our health, as well as helping the environment.

Whilst some of you reading this will already have vegetarian or vegan diets, some families may be interested in taking part in Veg Pledge. For others, it may not be suitable or recommended – or it may not be something with which you wish to participate. Whichever group you and your family might fall into, it is a good reminder of how important it is for our children to enjoy not only eating vegetables, but also to be involved in growing and cooking them – and, indeed, taking part in family mealtimes.

Children love to see things grow. Most families will have had experience of their small children growing cress seeds on cotton wool or blotting paper and seeing how quickly it grows. Even three-year-olds can harvest their crop of cress and eat the results of their labours in a sandwich.

As children grow older, why not provide a small patch in the garden, a window box or even an old bucket and let them buy a few packets of vegetable seeds. Such a seemingly simple task can bring joy, reward and also a sense of responsibility. If you don’t look after your seedlings or forget to water them, you quickly learn what happens! A couple of Christmases ago, I was given a wonderful surprise present of a beautiful wooden herb “theatre”, three tiered shelves with accompanying pots on which to grow herbs. I also shared the childlike joy of looking after my array of herbs and, sadly, learned what happens if you forget them for a few days.

If you want to bypass the growing phase, another idea is to go to the supermarket with your children and find a new and interesting vegetable each week. When our youngest child was little, that is exactly what we did. It is amazing how many weird, wonderful and interesting fruits and vegetables lurk in supermarket racks that often go unnoticed – some were delicious, some not so delicious – and for others, we had to research how to cook them. It was a short, but fun phase and we both learned about all sorts of unusual fruit and vegetables.

And then, of course, comes the cooking and the eating. If you can find time,

even occasionally, to involve your young children in helping to prepare a meal (or, as they get older, cook an entire meal for the family), it is surprisingly rewarding – and educational – for all involved.

As we all know, eating together as a family, whatever the age of our children, is an important time together. Even though they are all grown up now, our increasingly

rare, family dinners are a highlight for us all. The dinners may be more sophisticated, the palates more discerning and certainly the glasses are filled with wine now, but those times are always special for Family Laidlaw.

So, take a few minutes to consider your Veg Pledge, not only for such an important cause, but also for the health benefits, the learning and the fun that it can bring to your family.

HAPPY DAYS

Community and spirit are the life blood of boarding schools today. The very culture of a boarding house dictates how adults and children behave and interact, how the whole community treats one another, the respect and kindness shown and, ultimately, how this will determine the happiness and overall wellbeing of the children. Boarding in today’s modern world is really all about passion, vibrancy, enthusiasm and the strong level of happiness and enjoyment that every child should feel.

A boarding school with spirit is one within which children and sta work together collaboratively, with great fun and energy, and one where positive things happen.

It is a purposeful and busy community, full of opportunity and engagement where children flourish, develop new

skills, learn about themselves and others, and above all, have fun in the process.

Boarding schools like mine are also keen to ensure that they provide a balance of both structured and unstructured time.

FLEXIBILITY OF BOARDING

The close-knit community that will grow from the correct boarding spirit is one where everyone cares for each other, and protects each other while growing and developing together. A community that enjoys the good times, but also has the inner strength to cope when things are not going so well, learns from these occasions and gains much from them too.

There will be children for whom a boarding spirit is second nature, and this will quickly develop within them. However, there will always be others who find communal living far more di cult and will struggle with either the busy nature of a boarding house or with the constant giving, taking and tolerance which is always required. Boarding in the 21st century has to develop and innovate to survive, and successful schools will recognise this and will be constantly reflecting on their provision.

Flexi-boarding is becoming more popular today as an alternative option to full boarding. This gives children the opportunity to experience the culture of the boarding house part-time or on selected days. Many children at Windlesham House board flexibly, some board during the weekdays and go home to their families at weekends, while some board on selected days each week. Gone are the days when schools can dictate to parents the rules of boarding, instead we must work with our families to provide a flexible boarding model that will work for them. One size never fits all.

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Boarding councils, dorm meetings, food councils and other pupil-led committees are all great ways of ensuring that everyone has a voice or that there are conduits for children’s feelings, ideas and aspirations. Most importantly, these need to be advertised, fully inclusive and with all aspects fed back to the children. A demonstrable di erence needs to be made so that children can see that their ideas are valued and are being put into practice. This in turn will lead to more respectful and vibrant communities within which everyone

understands the responsibility they have, to make the boarding house fun, friendly and above all, a pleasant place to live. Boarding houses must be a home away from home as much as possible regardless of whether a child is a full-time or flexiboarder. An obvious starting point is to ensure they are comfortable, suitably furnished and decorated to cater to di erent age groups and also have a good balance of recreational areas so that everyone can find somewhere to relax, be with their friends or escape from the hustle and bustle of busy school life. However, sitting quietly beyond all of this there must be a warm, nurturing atmosphere and environment. Children should instantly feel at home and comfortable in their surroundings. It will always be part of school life, but the personality of each boarding house is largely determined by the adults who also live and work there. This is really what makes the biggest di erence in terms of culture and day to day atmosphere.

ENRICHMENT AND HAPPINESS

The wellbeing and mental health of children will continue to be a priority for boarding provision, but how we tackle this issue, along with diversity and inclusion, will be the di erentiator. Specialist sta ng and resources within the boarding houses will become the norm rather than the exception and ensuring that children have dedicated time to reflect on their school days and the opportunities to discuss their concerns, worries and aspirations regularly is essential.

Parents expect more from boarding schools today. They want and quite reasonably expect their children to have additional opportunities and experiences beyond the normal school curriculum and for these to be personally enriching and beneficial for their future success and happiness. As schools we must be looking carefully at what we provide our boarders in terms of enrichment and how we measure the outcomes and benefits. Regardless of the need to constantly evolve and innovate, a few elements remain constant; children should feel cared for, they should feel happy, secure and able to flourish within a warm and homely boarding environment.

Selfless approach

The British Citizen Youth Award, now in its eighth year, has honoured 25 young people from across the UK that have made a difference in their communities and society as a whole. These selfless young people have shown kindness and a commitment to a multitude of causes, raising funds and awareness, all dedicated to making a difference.

Steven Rushmer, age 17 from West Sussex, was honoured on 20 October 2022 with The British Citizen Youth Award. For the past three years Steven has given up his weekends leading up to Remembrance Day to volunteer by selling Poppies for the Royal British Legion. In 2018 he took part in the Commemoration of the Centenary of the armistice with the Royal British Legion. Over the past two years, Steven has been helping an elderly member of the community who he met whilst collecting for the Poppy Appeal. As the person has mobility issues, Steven has been doing odd jobs around the house as well as collecting shopping on a regular basis. He o en calls in just for a chat to make sure that they are okay, not feeling lonely or isolated. Steven’s recognition is well deserved.

The first people have moved into their homes at Brighton and Hove’s newest neighbourhood, Edward Street Quarter (ESQ), located on the former AMEX House site in the city’s Kemptown district. The development, located just a stone’s throw from the seafront and the famous Palace Pier, comprises 168 homes and promises to be a vibrant, eclectic and inclusive part of the local community.

As soon as people move in, they’re invited to join the Edward Street app to meet co-residents, find out what’s going on in the building and wider neighbourhood, and access all the latest news, events and exclusive o ers. There are a handful of one, two and three-bedroom apartments available, many with private balcony space. Tom Bryant, Director of Savills, one of the lead real estate agencies working on ESQ, adds: “These apartments have so much to o er in this flourishing new neighbourhood, which is minutes from the beach and the Lanes, and within walking distance of the station. With very limited new build stock in Brighton, we anticipate continued high levels of interest in the remaining apartments at this flagship residential development.”

James Epps, Director of Oakley

Property, Sussex-based land and new homes specialists, jointly marketing ESQ, says: “The development has everything you need for modern work-leisure living. Gyms, retail spaces, restaurants, co-workspaces and public art installations. Plus, you have easy access to Brighton and Hove itself, and all the city’s amazing facilities.”

The development also features 125,000 sq ft of flexible o ce space, making it the largest provision of workspace to be delivered in the city since 1993. It includes 20,000 sq ft designated for food, beverage, retail and leisure. GLOW WILD

You know the festive season is approaching when Kew Wakehurst's site is illuminated in a whole host of colour

Forming a glistening haven in the heart of Sussex, Wakehurst’s enchanting winter lantern trail Glow Wild returns for 2022, opening on 24 November. The ninth edition promises a brand-new route through Kew’s wild botanic garden, with 11 bespoke installations and over 1,000 paper lanterns handmade by local volunteers all celebrating the incredible colour spectrum of the natural world.

From the moment visitors collect their colourful lantern to guide them through the encroaching dark, they embark on Glow Wild’s most colourful route to date, with each segment lit with di erent vibrant colours, bathed in a new soundscape from Brighton artists, Ithaca. The dark hues of succulent berries conjure up infra-red as the trail commences.

Maker and illustrator Kerith Ogden continues the exploration of the animal kingdom with his series of playful lantern sculptures inspired by the world of insects. Insects’ intriguing use of colour – as a warning, to attract a mate, or as camouflage – is reflected in the richly coloured creations of ladybirds, stag beetles, bees, green shield bugs and common blue butterflies. Shimmering blues will also adorn two new arrivals on the Glow Wild trail, with giant parading puppets Percy and Percie the Peacocks entertaining visitors at a pop-up refreshments stop. Plus, Sussex metal sculptor Michelle Dufaur’s shimmering array of lantern birds celebrates the colourful plumes and feathers of native species.

As the route ventures into new ground for the first time, the trail draws attention to the power of the elements, with a bespoke installation from Glow Wild regulars, AndNow:, returning for their ninth year. Over 300 points of fire will transform the dark woodland path into a dancing fiery display accompanied by a specially commissioned soundscape.

As the fires ebb away, a new installation from Same Sky forms overhead with clusters of cloud-shaped lanterns.

In a series of water-based installations, the gardens take on the soothing tones of blues and purples. UK Young Artist of the Year nominee, Malgorzata Lisiecka, returns to Wakehurst following her popular summer installation with a bespoke piece.

As the trail draws to its end, a joyful explosion of colourful flora and fauna forms the Glow Wild finale. Light designers OGE Group transform Mansion Pond in Symphony of Light with flowers up to 4m wide floating on the surface. The warm glow of 1,800 energy-saving bulbs adorning Wakehurst’s 37 metre giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), the UK’s tallest living Christmas tree, beckons visitors to nearby crackling firepits.
