ithout particularly intending to, we've produced a very female issue for summer 2018. Firstly, we're coveting Pearl Lowe's beautiful house in Somerset with its mix of b ohemian shabbiness, floral fabrics and faded bohemian glamour as well as its quintessentially English garden, where all our fantasy tea parties are held. Then we're back in London, chez Kate Moss (surely she's Pearl Lowe's friend?) – where we're only allowed in the bathroom, but what a bathroom it is, right down to the de Gournay wallpaper designed, naturally, by the model herself. Other inspirational women in these pages include style icon Florence Welch, who has created a collection of sleepwear for Liberty after rifling through their fabric archive. Her lovely pieces feature upholstery fabrics reimagined as pyjamas – and this kind of transposition works equally well for designer Neisha Crosland, who has reworked her textile designs as tiles in another of our female focuses. We also look at Tatty Devine's jewellery motifs in their new incarnation as homeware, at fashion house Missoni's new cookbook and at designer Lara Bohinc's stellar inspirations for new furniture pieces. In all, that's a lot of women to be celebrating. Enjoy the issue.

O n go i n g William Morris Gallery In this exhibition, 16 female artists from across the globe weave their tales of our time with traditional hand-woven techniques that connect us to the past. Killed Negatives On goin g Whitechapel Gallery In order to expose American poverty in the 1930s and 40s, an initiative was launched in which commissioned photographers recorded the struggles of rural life following the Great Depression. comprises five alabaster portraits of Marina Abramović which merge performance, light and sculpture. Their hauntingly physical presence decomposes into intricately carved landscapes of alabaster as you move around the pieces. Masterpiece’s cross-collecting ethos can be seen throughout the fair, where exhibitors specialising in a wide variety of disciplines and eras are brought together, offering the broadest spectrum of works of any art fair, with classical and contemporary shown sideby-side. Visitors will encounter presentations which carefully combine furniture, sculpture and works of art from all periods, unified by quality. Examples of this ethos can be seen at Benjamin Proust, Perrin Fine Art, Robilant + Voena, and Safani Gallery & Geoffrey Diner. This year, highly important Impressionist and Modern works will be exhibited at the Fair by a number of exhibitors. Landau Fine Art’s presentation will include a Picasso oil painting which hung for decades behind the desk of his only dealer, Paul Rosenberg. Gladwell & Patterson will be bringing a preeminent example of a late waterlilies painting by Monet

and, celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, Hammer Galleries will be bringing an early work by Joan Miró along with Marc Chagall’s Peintre au coq rouge. Masterpiece is an important destination for collectors of British art and design and many of this year’s exhibitors are celebrating the work of British artists as well as those who have lived and worked in the UK. This focus is encapsulated by Richard Green whose presentation ‘Best of British from our Shores and Beyond’ includes pieces by Turner, Lowry and Constable.

Modern and Post-War British artists including Eileen Agar, Duncan Grant, Barbara Hepworth, Bridget Riley and Graham Sutherland, will be presented by The Redfern Gallery, Osborne Samuel, Philip Mould, Offer Waterman, Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert and Piano Nobile. With a booth inspired by the Surrealist poet and patron Edward James, David Gill Gallery will be bringing together contemporary works from their roster of artists and designers including Zaha Hadid, Michele Oka Doner and Mattia Bonetti. Modern and contemporary design will also be presented by 18 Davies Street Gallery, Rose Uniacke and Modernity Stockholm. New exhibitor Sarah Myerscough Gallery will showcase unique handcrafted contemporary pieces of design by John Makepeace amongst others, and Sinai & Sons Ltd. will focus on the work of Italian painter, sculptor, interior decorator and engraver Piero Fornasetti. Hitomi Hosono’s exquisite collaboration with Wedgwood will be revealed at Adrian Sassoon, and Katie Jones will present a selection of contemporary Japanese applied arts.

ara Bohinc likes geometry. ‘My obsession with all things round and spherical is explained in the new collection’s title,’ she says. ‘These shapes are essential to our perception and understanding of the world.’ Her latest works for Bohinc Studio demonstrate her expertise with metalwork techniques, whilst bringing forward her geometrically and celestially inspired signature style All the new pieces are made in small artisanal workshops in Italy, and combine traditional craft and modern technology in metalwork as well as in ceramics. Bohinc Studio was launched in 2016 by Lara Bohinc for the exploration of furniture and object design. With Since the World is Round, Bohinc Studio presents chairs for the first time, a vanity console and matching chair, and home accessories comprising of vases, candlesticks and boxes.

In the collection, Lara Bohinc develops her stellar themes, finding inspiration in planetary and lunar orbits, whose gravitationally curved trajectories drive the lines and shapes of the chairs. Constructed from thin square rod, the chairs are elegant, minimal and delicate. They are finished in galvanised steel and wool fabrics by Kvadrat in orange, red, pink, petrol and black. The Solar Chair (pictured) has an asymmetric frame and its reflecting circles suggest the rising and setting of the sun. It is constructed from playful lines that incorporates circles, half circles and squares. The Lunar Chair is distinguished by two enveloping crescents for armrests, and a smaller backrest which, like a moon, circles its planet on an orbit of its own. The Orbit Chair features dramatically inclined circular armrests that hold the round back above the larger circular seat, suggesting a moon in orbit. The armrests arc down in a graceful trajectory to meet the front legs and the single rear leg further enhances the chair’s simple lines and space around the seat. This Celeste Console has an elegant and playful form made from square brass galvanised steel rod frame, that contrasts with the fresh blue of the verdigris patinated copper surface, sides and drawer. The design plays with circles and straight lines to create a piece that is delicate and light but complex. Two different mirror shapes accentuate the wave in the console’s surface and its flowing, light form.

t all began in 1949 when Viljo Ratia founded Printex, a small Helsinki-based textile printing company, in 1949. Viljo’s wife, Armi Ratia, envisioned a bold future for textile design and manufacturing. To fulfil her vision, she gathered promising young artists around her and asked them to create new and striking fabric prints for Printex. One of the young artists was Maija Isola, whose Amfora design was among the first fabrics printed at Printex. They quickly gained a lot of admirers but no buyers, so these unusual fabrics needed a showcase. Armi’s solution: a fashion show filled with colour, grace and exceptional patterns. The clothes designed by renowned fashion designer Riitta Immonen literally sold on the spot. Marimekko was registered as a company five days later, in 1951 and the following year Marimekko opened its first store in Helsinki. Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi joined Marimekko in 1953 to design clothing and print patterns. Alongside her radical loose-fitting dress designs, Vuokko created one the most enduring Marimekko classics: the unisex Jokapoika (every boy) shirt in the striped Piccolo pattern. Maija Isola continued to create iconic Marimekko prints like Kivet (stones) and many more. The Marimekko logo, inspired by the simplicity of Olivetti typewriter letters, was born in 1954. Towards the end of the decade, the story of Marimekko began to spread across the seas: first it reached Sweden and soon after the United States. The 1960s got off to a good start with Jacqueline Kennedy buying seven Marimekko dresses and wearing one of them on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1960.

“Marimekko became an internationally renowned phenomenon and a way of life”

Marimekko became an internationally renowned phenomenon and a way of life. The company grew rapidly and its product range expanded to include a variety of accessories and home items. Armi Ratia built a utopia called Marikylä (Marimekko Village), whose aim was to house the staff and to function as a laboratory for product design and Marimekko living. New fashion designers joined the company, among them Annika Rimala whose modern dress designs were regularly featured in international fashion magazines. She also created many typical Marimekko prints like Puketti (bouquet), Keidas (oasis) and Tarha (garden).

36

In the ‘60s, Maija Isola created many of her best-known Marimekko prints, Lokki(seagull) and Kaivo (well) for example. The most widely known by far, however, is Unikko (poppy), which Maija designed in 1964 in protest after Armi Ratia had declared that Marimekko would never be a flower print company. During the 1970s, the product range was further expanded with the launch of canvas bags designed by Armi’s son, Ristomatti Ratia. Textile designer Katsuji Wakisaka came to Marimekko from Japan and designed several iconic prints like Bo Boo, a pattern which immediately won over both children and adults. In 1973, Marimekko opened a new textile printing factory in Helsinki and acquired its first flatbed printing machine. The factory was expanded in 1979, when the company moved its entire textile printing to one location. One of Marimekko’s most famous licensed products was born in the ‘80s: the classic Kivi (stone) candleholder designed by Heikki Orvola.

D E S I G N | HISTORY

The factory building in Helsinki was expanded in 1983, and Marimekko’s headquarters moved under the same roof as the printing mill. The ‘00s were marked by a global Unikko (poppy) boom, and many other classic designs by Maija Isola also enjoyed greater popularity than perhaps ever before. The Oiva (superb) tableware designed by Sami Ruotsalainen hit the stores in 2009 and was an instant hit. The first patterns for the tableware collection were created by Maija Louekari. Marimekko’s print production was modernised with the acquisition of a new flatbed printing machine and digital screen-making equipment. New products have been introduced in the home collection, such as the Sukat makkaralla (socks rolled down) glassware by Anu Penttinen, the Konkkaronkka (bunch) cutlery by Mari Isopahkala, and the Hehkuva (glowing) lantern and the Valoisa (bright) lamp by Harri Koskinen. The output capacity of the textile printing factory in Helsinki was tripled in 2011 with the acquisition of a new rotary printing machine. Marimekko’s global expansion remains in full swing. The number of Marimekko stores outside Finland has more than doubled, including flagship stores in New York City and Sydney – and Marimekko is at the forefront of the international trend for Scandinavian style.

D

esigner Pearl Lowe's inimitable personal style makes her home a source of inspiration. Known as a serial mover, the designer moved away from London and her urban life several years ago to find solace in Somerset. Here she embarked on a series of house projects in a quest to find the perfect rural home for her, her husband Danny Goffey and their four children. A rock roll love affair with faded glamour style has resulted in this truly golden country home. Designed with the hedonist in mind, there´s a seductive dining room for long nights of Champagne and laughter, clawfoot bath tubs and deep sofas by open fires that beg for crosswords and conversation. This is a world of feminine floras, bohemian extravagance and tea parties on the lawn. If you must leave, The Fat Radish in Frome serves deliciously dizzying cocktails whilst White Row Farm will provide everything you need for a delectable self-catering stay. This is the only place the party will want to be this summer.

She says ‘ a good pattern is one that people can connect with. It must have a sense of familiarity but at the same time the design must surprise them with its freshness.› Jigsaw does just that. The six patterned tile play with shape from squares to a diamond, fan and prolong hexagonal. These explore optic angles and stars, castellated edges, overlapping lines and dynamic geometrics. Colours are dusty pinks, jades, primrose and pomegranate. The encaustic nature of the tiles gives the colours a subtle softness. artisansofdevizes.com

The Legacy Hans J Wegner’s CH24 Wishbone Chair

I

Words P E A R L B OY D

n celebration of Hans J. Wegner’s 104th birthday, Carl Hansen & Son launched a unique edition of the designer’s iconic CH24 Wishbone Chair. Crafted from oak that has been specially treated to recreate the distinctively warm, dark brown hue of thousand-year-old bog oak, this is the first time that the CH24 Wishbone Chair has been presented in an ancient oak finish. To produce the commemorative edition, Carl Hansen & Son employed modern processing and dyeing techniques to recreate the unique qualities of rare ancient oak wood. After weeks of treatment, new oak was transformed and fashioned to replicate its millennium-old counterpart. This iconic design is exemplary of Wegner’s constant striving towards organic simplicity in his work, alongside his desire to create sculptural beauty, comfort and outstanding stability. With its gently rounded top rail and sculptural shape, the lightweight Wishbone Chair allows for freedom of movement and superior comfort, making it an ideal piece for both work and relaxation spaces.

MACHINE MADE How Florence Welch is reinventing the classic Liberty print for her collaborative sleepwear collection words E V E H E R B E R T

Style icon Florence Welch is a fan of the Liberty print. And she's also a fan of pyjamas. So this collaboration is a match made in design heaven. "I do a lot of writing in the morning, still in my pyjamas with lots of very strong coffee. And as a Liberty print obsessive, I was honoured that Liberty allowed me to trawl though their archives to create this collection,” she says. Working with the design team and Liberty’s textile archivist Anna Buruma, Florence hand-picked a selection of floral paisleys from the extensive Liberty print archive to be reworked onto a range of new sleep styles and accessories. The first print, entitled Cosmic Jungle, is a blush paisley placement print that has been engineered onto a classic pyjama and long kimono. The Delilah print is a more whimsical design, featuring azaleas, carnations and star flowers. This print is available as a classic pyjama, short pyjama, eye mask and short kimono. The Evelyn print has been created from a paisley motif obtained from a book of drawings from 1820. This motif didn’t exist as a print, but with Florence’s vision, it was re-drawn and brought to life across two colour-ways; a navy and blush. Lastly the Leontine print is a purple, green and harvest gold fern print from 1963. This print remains true to its origins in both colour and style and adorns classic pyjamas, a short kimono and eye mask. Printed on silk satin, shapes remain easy, inspired by Florence’s need for versatile day to night pieces when travelling, and the special piece long Kimono’s are reminiscent of her covetable concert style. “Florence embodies the Liberty London women. She has an eclectic style, mixing colours and prints, we also love her sense of travel & adventure which mirrors that of Arthur Liberty, the original founder,” says Amelia Hornblow, Liberty’s director of product. libertylondon.com

ombining cutting-edge artistry, forward-thinking design and a sense of how to make people feel seen, Liberty has been a destination of discovery since the store opened its doors in 1875. From the outset, founder Arthur Lasenby Liberty sought to beautify everyday things, partnering with progressive artists, nurturing artisans from unexplored continents and reigniting the British textile industry with a range of artistic and innovative fabrics. The birth of Liberty’s signature silk-like cotton, Tana Lawn, would liberate the way people designed clothing and encourage selfexpression. Liberty artefacts, including the extensive print archive, are housed in the City of Westminster Archives.

n this age of maximum communication life can be overwhelming, and introducing pattern can feel as if it will simply increase the noise and confusion. But when chosen carefully, pattern can be as functional as it is decorative. Pattern can contribute to environments that promote healing, wellbeing and relaxation. The living room is generally where we relax, the visual mood should be soft and comfort is key. With many disparate pieces of furniture, coffee tables, side tables, sofas and chairs, this room can easily look jumbled and cluttered. Pattern can give a focal point. A wallpapered wall behind a sofa can create the colour scheme for a room, or a rug can zone the space linking all of the random pieces of furniture together. Pile sofas with textiles, patterned blankets and throws to wrap up in and plump cushions to sink in to. Frame windows with gently decorated curtains, to create a nurturing environment and to link back to the textiles used on the sofa. Patterns don’t need to match. A colour palette that is repeated throughout the room, contrasting designs that enhance one another, or patterns that blend together will create a flow that gives consistency.

he practice of having a room of matching wallpaper, curtains and upholstery is becoming more popular again and Birgit Morgensten has a simplified version of this look in her home. A wall of Gräser wallpaper stretches the length of the room, with the large central window framed by curtains of the same fabric. When the curtains are closed the pattern flows across the full wall uninterrupted and when they are open the view outside is framed by the pattern. The simple upholstery and white walls stop the matching pattern being overwhelming creating a very peaceful room. Leading off from this space is a little reading area. Birgit found the two little stools in the street and reupholstered them in different prints of her fabrics. “I wanted to place them next to each other, and keep a harmonious colour theme, but the shades are varied to keep it more interesting”.

ayering pattern upon pattern needn’t create the “patterning headache” Voysey refers to. By keeping the colour tones in a similar palette, the designs can blend into each other, creating layers of warmth without feeling cluttered. In my living room, I already had Brambleweb wallpaper on the wall and had recently upholstered my 1950’s sofa in Bird linen for a shoot. I was worried that afterwards I would have to redecorate, that they would be too much together but the watercolour pink tones in Bird, reflected the pink tinged grey of Brambleweb and the difference in scale between the patterns mean they stand alone without being isolated. And mixing monochrome patterns and furniture with contrasting designs in soft colours will also add atmosphere and warmth. Daniel Heath’s living room is an eclectic mix of Daniel’s designs, blended in with vintage pieces. The small space could be chaotic but a tiny sofa has been chosen to nestle into an alcove to maximise space and mustard tones run throughout. The textures of the rug and the woven sofa keep the room interesting and the warm hues of the wooden sofa, table and

You can end up with a hotchpotch of stuff, which can be charming, but living in a small space in London I have to be restrained. London is busy and frenetic as it is and our house is becoming more of a refuge from that busyness, and the hectic pace of everyday life.”

hannan Camanaro’s love of the ocean is clear to see in the seating area of her urban loft in New York. The watery coastal blues of the Eskayel wallpaper are echoed in the super laidback blue leather sofa. “It’s always scary to commit to a pattern because the idea of a clean blank wall is so appealing but once you commit and then you see pictures of the

bare wall without the pattern it looks so cold and unfinished. Pattern can really complete a room and it’s ok to mix it up.” She says. The assorted patterns in varying tones of blue are mixed with a shaggy cream rug and faux fur throw, adding layers of comfort and texture to make this a space that invites lounging. The timeless blue and white colour scheme of Emma Von Bromsen’s living room is a classic combination. Emma’s crane design is used as wallpaper on the walls and again on the cushions. This could look too matchy-matchy but by mixing in her mackerel design and a patterned throw, the room becomes modern and relaxed. The rich indigo tones of the textiles keep the overall appearance cohesive and the linen of the traditional sofa has a comfortable lived in look, the plain natural colourway gives space to the intensity of the patterns making for a very restful room.

Their Loveletter wallpaper behind the faded leather sofa has a sense of history to it; the pattern consists of elegant hand written love notes from a bygone era, a rarity in these days of email and text messages. The romantic time worn charm adds a sense of stillness to their home, emphasised by the combination of distressed leather sofa and their contemporary take on traditional cushion designs. with three different monochrome wallpapers, all lined up next to each other but defined by the wide central chimney breast. The seating area here has a romantic faded damask design, happily contrasted with the clean lines of the furniture but the space is unified by the monochrome pattern in the decorative rug on the floor, which brings the room together with a repetitive curation of delicate pattern. “We generally like walls to be quite bright and white,” says Brendan. “With dark patterned walls you feel like you can’t hang anything on top, that isn’t the case with the bleached out versions of these designs, they make the house feel light. We like wood and natural materials but if you mix that with pattern and too many other materials, it becomes too much. Our style is quite simple.”

SOFT MACHINE HOME celebrates linen, the softest and strongest fabric

t is widely accepted that the ultimate in luxury comes in the form of percale cotton of the highest thread count. Five star hotels generally offer sheets with a thread count of 400, which feels incredibly smooth and silky. And certainly, freshly laundered, bright white sheets are hard to beat – unless you are of the linen persuasion. Increasingly, linen has become the more desirable option, with stonewashed linen looking stylishly rumpled and feeling softer with each wash. Linen has the advantage of lasting longer than combed cotton because it’s at least 30% stronger; it also offers better temperature control, staying warm in winter and cool in summer due to its moisture absorbency and heat retention. And it’s not just sheets. Linen curtains, cushions and tablecloths have a rich texture and colour saturates the fabric, creating a deep, luxe look.

anish furniture Ferm Living decorated a classic, old Copenhagen apartment at the central location Amagertorv not just to showcase their many collections but to create a feeling of what a good home means. In The Home, we get a sense of how Ferm’s many designs ranging from furniture, via lighting, to textiles, work together to create a warm atmosphere where you want to linger. Our home is a mirror of who we are as a person; The Home is a mirror of who Ferm Living is as a design brand with products for all spaces of your everyday life. A home is a feeling and a space to feel comfortably you. The nice high-quality sofa with the perfect pillow is not what makes a home. And you’re not a single thing or a page in a catalogue; you’re a collage of everything you’ve ever experienced and everywhere you ever went. Your home is the mirror of you. And so is THE HOME a mirror of Ferm Living as a brand. While being a showroom and a place to display new designs, it’s also an invitation into our universe of authentic and balanced living. THE HOME is a s pace to find calm as well as new energy; a space for serenity and parties. A space of balance reflecting that of life. Ferm Living believes in always challenging themselves with collections ranging from accessories over furniture to lighting. They create contemporary designs with a touch of mid-century charm in line with Scandinavian design heritage. It’s part of the brand’s DNA to take good care of the origin of its products, producing everything in line with the traditions of craftsmanship in honest materials and a keen

eye for detail. By honest materials they mean clean, real commodities with a minimal impact on the environment. The look and feel of THE HOME change from time to time, always making sure to preserve the feeling of entering an actual home where people live. Each new styling is a different story, of a specific time and atmosphere of a family’s life. In the new styling, the scene is set for a great evening; you’ve been making sure everything is ready for a night in great company, and you’re just making the final adjustments when: Doorbell! The guests are early, but you haven’t set the table, and you’re still not in your favourite outfit. Life’s not perfect. But of course, you welcome your guests. Behind the scenes is where we find real beauty. Life is beautiful but can be a little rough around the edges. It’s the mix of the shiny new things and treasures found on flea markets; the expectations of a lovely evening expressed in the pile of plates waiting on the dinner table, your favourite dress waiting on the dresser and festivity in the air. In the bathroom, the host is getting ready for the party, while delicious aromas spread from the kitchen where dinner is nearly done. fermliving.com

andmade using traditional manufacturing techniques, Drummonds’ splendid Double Lowther Vanity forms the magnificent centerpiece of Kate Moss’s bathroom. The brassware of the stand and taps is cast using the classic lost wax process and the white china basins are made in English clay, hand glazed and hand-finished. Highly figured Arabescato marble underlines the sheer scale and luxury of this piece. To partner the Lowther, Moss chose a freestanding, double-ended Spey bath with a hand-painted exterior. This is just one of Drummonds’ many cast iron bath designs, each of which takes several weeks to make in a series of craft processes beginning with casting the molten iron and completed by dry fit enameling and custom exterior finishing.

Little big

ROOMS How kids’ and adults’ spaces can be designed to co-exist seamlessly

A

new book published by Gestalten is full of ideas on how to create spaces that are attractive to adults and children alike. It’s time to ditch the stereotype of exhausted parents sacrificing personal style on the altar of the family – nowadays, your interior can be inviting, orderly, chic and – yes – serene while still servicing all your little ones’ needs. For a glimpse of how, take a look at our exclusive extract from Little Big Rooms. ‘A Brio train runs through the living room, a bassinet stands in the parents’ bedroom, and a toddler makes noise on a miniatureformat wooden stove in the kitchen. This is a scenario that all parents can identify with: children are suddenly everywhere—and if not the children themselves, then their colourful traces of odds and ends. Children like to make the entire home their territory, and not only when their own rooms are small. It is a positive thing when children develop an imagination

and are permitted to implement their ideas at home, especially since it is seldom possible to simply send them out into the city alone. Children should, however, still learn that: there is adult territory that I may only use to a limited extent—and only with permission—and there is my territory, where I can do as I please, as long as I tidy up again later. If corners for children are firmly installed in spaces for adults – for instance a play kitchen (there are beautiful models by Brio or Djeco) in the real kitchen, or a table for arts and crafts (for example by Richard Lampert) and/or a reading corner in the living room – such areas should always have enough boxes, drawers or baskets in which the little conquerors can quickly stow away their playthings after use. If parents encounter resistance in connection with tidying up, we recommend threatening children with the vacuum-cleaner scenario: if it comes out, everything will be gone afterward. People who like rugs can easily share them with their children in the living room, also because flooring made of natural materials is much more robust than one might think.’

ow many hearts sank when the government gave Heathrow’s third runway the goahead last month? Households all over the western outskirts of London are already exposed to varying degrees of aircraft noise, and the promise of more planes isn’t appealing to any of them. Living under or near the flightpath can be a serious source of stress, resulting in sleep loss and even leading to possible cardiovascular problems. But if you don’t want to move, what’s the solution? Even the most beautiful home can soon lose its appeal if it lets in unwanted noise from the world outside. And just as excessive noise can destroy your home life, so a return to tranquility can transform it. Hugo Carter’s aptlynamed Silent Windows can reduce sound levels inside your house by 51dB. This is a company made up of engineers and experts –not doubleglazing salesmen – and their offering is unique and progressive. Working with experts from the Institute of Acoustics, they offer the most advanced noise reduction windows. Whether you live on a busy road, by the train tracks, next to noisy neighbours or beneath the flightpath – or are experiencing another kind of persistent noise intrusion – they promise to give you back your nights. Surveyors trained by a team from Southampton Solent University will carry out a detailed noise analysis in order to decide on exactly the right type of glazing for each noise problem. Noise reduction involves a combination of different elements and the

NOISE: THE FACTS

Sound is measured in decibels, with every increase of 10dB on the scale equivalent to a 10-fold increase in sound intensity. So if quiet traffic noise is 60dB and loud traffic noise is 70dB, the louder traffic sounds a million times more intense.

According to the World Health Organisation, those living with noise pollution of over 55dB are likely to suffer health problems. In London, this affects 1.6 million people.

Single-glazed sash windows are capable of a noise reduction of around 25dB while noise reduction glass offers reductions of 35 dB to 51 dB.

The optimal internal noise level for a living room or bedroom is around 30 dB. Disturbances from the outside world can take this up to 75 dB.

team at Silent Windows has a thorough understanding of it – and this is why they are the experts of choice for several five star hotel groups, including Radisson. CEO Jacob Figura explains: "Early on we realised that if we wanted to truly transform people’s lives through their living environments, we needed to develop more deeply our fascination with, and knowledge of, the ‘science of silence’ – and then apply that expertise to our products and our process." Installing silent windows can be the best investment you make, making your home comfortable and more sellable too. With the

right windows, planes above you at 500 feet may as well be 500 miles away. The Grafton Hotel on Tottenham Court Road recently commissioned 145 windows in the first floor front elevation, and noise levels in the rooms have reduced significantly. Silent Windows offers doors, bi-fold doors and French Windows too for a full soundproof solution, even for homes in conservation areas or which are Grade II listed. They will devise a bespoke solution for your individual problem and deliver windows that are beautiful as well as functional. silentwindows.co.uk

DINING WITH DESIGN The Missoni Family Cookbook features well-loved recipes from generations of the fashion family’s kitchen

GNOCCHI VERDI SPINACH AND RICOTTA GNOCCHI SERVES 6 (MAKES ABOUT 60 GNOCCHI) FOR THE GNOCCHI

17 oz fresh spinach • 3 lb ricotta • 3 large egg yolks • 4 oz type 00 flour, plus more for dusting • 1 tsp freshly ground nutmeg • Sea salt and freshly ground white pepper • For the sage-infused butter: 1 stick unsalted butter • 6 leaves fresh sage • Freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, for serving. MAKE THE GNOCCHI

1 Wash the spinach thoroughly. 2 Bring a large pot of water over high heat to a boil. Add the spinach and cook for about 2 minutes, or until tender; drain the spinach into a colander. 3 Using your hands, shape the spinach into a ball, pressing firmly to drain well. Place the spinach in a large cloth and twist it tightly over the sink, removing all excess water. 4 In a food processor fitted with the “S” blade, chop the spinach until it achieves a superfine consistency. Add the ricotta, the egg yolks, the 4 ounces of the flour, and the nutmeg; season with sea salt and white pepper. Pulse until well combined.

88

5 Dust some of the flour over a clean work surface, a baking sheet, and your hands. Shape the spinach-ricotta mixture into 1–1 -inch balls. Dust them with flour and place them on the prepared baking sheet. 6 Bring a large pot of salted water over medium-high heat to a boil. Add the gnocchi to the pot in batches to avoid overcrowding. Allow each batch to cook for 2–3 minutes, or until they float to the surface. Remove each batch from the pot using a slotted spoon and set aside to drain. 7 Make the sage-infused butter: In a saucepan over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Add the sage leaves and fry for 2–3 minutes. Remove from the heat. 8 To serve, place 5–6 gnocchi in six shallow serving dishes (there will be plenty left for second helpings). Sprinkle the gnocchi with the Parmigiano-Reggiano and drizzle them with the hot sage-infused butter to melt the cheese. Serve hot.

F THE HOTEL

A

t the Chapel has one of those stories. Founders Catherine and Ahmed stumbled upon the building by chance during a trip to the tiny Somerset village of Bruton. They were looking for a new home in the country; what they found was a derelict Methodist chapel in need of a great deal of TLC. They transformed the crumbling nook into a marvellous modern residence. Years later, they decided to turn their visionary home into a hotel – so now the building boasts an on-site bakery and restaurant as well as eight exceptionally lovely rooms.

THE FOOD

A

t the Chapel is locally (and indeed nationally) renowned for the quality of its fare. The coffee and treats available in the bakery put most of London’s hipster bread-slingers to shame, while the restaurant serves top-notch grub of a creative yet unpretentious bent: think wood-fired pizza and locally sourced specialties prepared with a dash of Mediterranean flair. Oh, and it’s situated within the chapel itself, with huge windows, lush views and contemporary art to ogle.

THE AMENITIES

ith the arrogance of youth, I determined to do no less than to transform the world with Beauty. If I have succeeded in some small way, if only in one small corner of the world, amongst the men and women I love, then I shall count myself blessed, and blessed, and blessed, and the work goes on.” So wrote William Morris, father of the Arts and Crafts Movement, writer, designer, arbiter of taste, socialist and pronouncer of universal design truths. If there exists an ultimate expression of that beauty he dedicated himself transforming the world with, it is certainly to be found in a 17th-century farmstead on the upper River Thames, near Lechlade, Gloucestershire. Kelmscott Manor – with its 12.5 hectares that house barns, stables and a dovecote, as well as the mellow limestone gabled house – was vigilantly and lovingly created as the physical manifestation of Morris’ ideals, along with those of the

poet and Pre-Raphaelite painter, Gabriel Dante Rossetti with whom he leased the property in 1871. Together, in Kelmscott, they created an idealised patch of England as they believed it should be. Built in the 16th century with 17th century additions, its mullioned windows and local stone make Kelmscott an exemplar of English vernacular architecture of its time, and for Morris, its great appeal lay in the simple use of materials that make it appear to rise naturally from the soil on which it stands. Built by yeoman farmer Thomas Turner, Lower House, as it was then known, stayed in the Turner family for generations, until a more distant descendent – one Charles Hobbs – decided to rent it out and, in doing so, unknowingly sealed its stellar place in Arts and Crafts history. Morris called it ‘heaven on earth’, a gushing yet sincere tribute to this place and its bucolic setting, surrounded as it is by trees and leading down to picturesque water meadows. (So enamoured was he that he also named his London residence on the banks of the Thames in Hammersmith after it, as well as establishing his own private press called Kelmscott Press.) He drew great inspiration from the unspoilt authenticity of the architecture and the organic nature of the garden; Kelmscott appears variously in his socialist novel, News from Nowhere, as well as in the background of Water Willow, a portrait of Morris’ wife Jane, painted by Rossetti. But if the house inspired the work, the relationship was certainly not unilateral. A tour of the manor today reveals a place where Morris’ transformative mark is indelible; the décor is rich with his famous textiles, as well as furniture of his own design, its heritage perfectly preserved thanks to his daughter May Morris bequeathing it to the solicitous care of Oxford University in 1938 in order that the public may see it and its legacy preserved.

Laid out roughly in a T-shape, the collections at Kelmscott reveal a fascinatingly layered history. The hall features an original fireplace and several pieces of oak furniture that were in situ when the Arts and Crafts pioneer and Rossetti took up residence, and Morris’ legacy can be seen here in the Strawberry Thief chintz with which the walls are hung, alongside hangings designed for Red House, his London home. Visitors should also note the tapestry in the Screens Passage, which shows a first attempt at his highly successful Cabbage and Vine tapestry. But as ever, it is the marriage of the original house with Morris’ irresistible augmentations that make Kelmscott so achingly beautiful; the Panelled Room, for example, unites a 1670 fireplace, complete with Turner family crest, with an understated and plain white paint scheme. Throughout, decorative flourishes from Morris’ set abound; in the Green Room, there are a series of tiles designed by Edward Burne-Jones that illustrate Chaucer’s Legend of Goode Women; a satin and silk bed cover in Mrs Morris’ Bedroom by May Morris; a drawing in Morris’ bedroom by Charles Fairfax-Murray that depicts the great man on his deathbed – a sensitive sketch made at his bedside that was subsequently lost for many years before being restored to its place of origin; furniture by Ford Maddox Brown; and, of course, many works by Rossetti, as well as some of his effects, such as a rarely put away paint box on display in the Tapestry Room. Many of the latter’s works were portraits and sketches of Jane Morris, including one of his finest works, Blue Silk Dress (1868). The frequency of her appearance in his work speaks of more than just her role as his long-time muse;

“Its perfectly simple garden made Kelmscott a utopia for Morris”

William Morris’ wife was also Rossetti’s lover – a passion that intensified during their time at Kelmscott, but one that had been a long time simmering. Jane Burden, as she was before her marriage, proved a prolific inspiration for the Pre-Raphaelites. The daughter of a stableman in Oxford, Rossetti had first spied her in the audience at the theatre and immediately asked her to pose for him. She demurred, but was later persuaded to model by Edward Burne-Jones – and thus the pre-eminent star muse of a movement was born. When Morris later began to paint her as Queen Guinevere from Arthurian legend, he wrote on the back of a canvas: “I cannot paint you, but I love you.” Despite agreeing to marry him, it is thought that Burden’s heart had always belonged to Rossetti, himself married to another of his muses, Elizabeth Siddal, at the time. Their affair began in 1865 after Siddal’s death; the tenancy of Kelmscott was taken, in no small part, to keep their affair, which continued until Rossetti’s death, private and away from prying eyes and gossiping mouths. And yet, Morris – aware of and distressed by the affair – undoubtedly loved Kelmscott despite the personal pain with which it was bound up for him. It was, perhaps, precisely because he could lose himself in his perfectly simple garden, which eschewed fancy flowers in favour of simple cottage garden blooms, planted for bees to draw their nectar from, that Kelmscott was such a utopia. Here he tended, and then wrote about his snowdrops, his daphne, and his hepatica, doubtless drawing inspiration from them – and the birds who frequented his garden paradise – in turn for his own work. There can be no greater paradigm of his dictum to “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful” than Kelmscott Manor. sal.org.uk/kelmscott-manor
