eptember means one thing in London: design. The London Design Festival covers a growing number of events all over town, spawning several separate Design Districts and countless events, installations and projects in addition to the main fairs. At Decorex, designjunction, 100% Design and Focus/18, exhibits from new and established designers from the UK and all over the world will descend on London's designhungry audiences and redefine the aesthetics of the year to come. Expect to see new shapes, colourschemes and ideas in everything from furniture and textiles to small accessories, ceramics, technology and decorative objects. Of the many themes and trends emerging, our favourites are colour – whether bright and bold or intriguing sludgy shades that aren't eaily categorised – and an angular, 80s aesthetic of tubular shapes, pastel shades and asymmetry, as well as a fearless world of elaborate, busy prints for textiles and wallpaper and a focus on quirky details. Also this month is London Open House Weekend, an opportunity to see inside buildings you're not normally allowed inside. Among them are some amazing residential interiors, so study the programme closely. And enjoy design month.

he ever-popular Open House London returns for its 26th year, with every London borough participating. This annual celebration of London’s buildings, places and spaces offers everybody the opportunity to explore the city’s most compelling architecture and design as more than 800 buildings of all kinds – many of them never otherwise open to the public – open their doors for the duration of a weekend. The programme includes a schedule of neighbourhood walks and architect-led tours, all of it completely free. But remember to get to your destination early: there may be a queue. This year’s programme explores how the new London that has been emerging over the past 20 years is finally coming to fruition. role in making London, engineering excellence underpinning the capital’s successful reinvention – these all show how good design can make London a more enjoyable and vibrant city in which to live and work. Rory Olcayto, Open City’s director said: “From Hackney Wick to Park Royal, Wembley to Nine Elms and the ever-changing Kings Cross, Open House is shining a light on the places shaping the capital with striking landmark buildings and new approaches to town planning. The cubic futurism of the American Embassy, Here East’s Day-glo ‘fun palace’ and the cool, sculptural qualities of the Aga Khan’s HQ are real stand-outs this year.”

ounded in 1920 by Italian-born Lucian Ercolani in High Wycombe, Ercol is an enduring name in the British furniture industry. Winners of multiple awards from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, the company still manufactures many of its early designs, and while it produces a variety of different pieces, it is its iconic chairs for which Ercol will always be primarily known. When Ercol perfected the art of steam-bending wood, it became able to manufacture in large quantities and the classic Windsor chair became a low-cost staple in post-war British households. The company remains family-owned and today it is run by Lucian’s grandson, Edward Tadros. From the early 1920s through to today, Ercol has worked with craftsmen, manufacturers and retailers to create and extend the Ercol furniture collection to the widest audience. The brand has become synonymous with great design combined with functionality and a strong British design heritage. Today’s designs are created within its design studio in Princes Risborough in the English Chiltern Hills, and most furniture is made by craftsmen in Ercol’s Buckinghamshire factory. While the brand is keen to emphasise its new design work and contemporary approach, it's important to remember that many of its classic original designs remain unchanged. The popular Quaker armchair, for instance, is still for sale in the same design. It encompasses a tall u-shaped, bent

wood seat back as well six turned spindles and supportive armrests. Not only does it provide a comfortable sit but it looks beautiful too. The design exudes elegance with its clean lines and soft curved edges. The chair bow is steam bent from a single straight ash rail into an amazingly tight radius bend and then sanded and shaped to give its subtle and elegant profile. But of course it's not just chairs, and neither is the Ercol ethos so much about low-cost utility any more. Now the company's offering is focused on stylish, contemporary pieces made to last using traditional methods and high-quality components. The factory moved to its present site in 2002 and it's a spacious, airy building with lots of windows and natural light. The friendly feel comes from it being very consciously a family business: many staff have worked here for years, and the dedication to taking on apprentices generates a lot of loyalty. A names board commemorates workers with more than 21 years' serivce, of which there are many. Walking around, you are struck immediately by the overwhelming smell of fresh wood. It's a well-organised system, with different components being created at various stations and the factory's eco credentials are strong. Sawdust generated from cutting wood is sucked into huge tubes and taken to power the building's vast central boiler. It's fascinating to watch the steam bending process and to hear about the precision involved –getting it right requires the consistency of the wood to be
exactly right – too dry and it will snap–and the steam pressure to be strong enough to create the perfect bend. The Evergreen chair's steam bent back bow is made with the original straps that date back to the 1950s and the precision required in the production process, there's an accepted reject rate of up to 40%. Thanks to Ercol's family ethos, designers work closely with the factory workers to ensure that the process is realistic. Design has always been at the heart of Ercol – design for comfort, design for function, design for beauty. The brand combines practicality with looks in the copious storage of Ercol's sideboards, shelving units, bookcases and display cabinets, the comfort of the studio couch and chairs, or the utility of coffee tables, lamp tables, desk and media units. As well as the in-house design team, Ercol commissions some of the best in British design talent to create pieces that constantly evolve to reflect how we live today, while continuing to reflect Ercol’s quality and craftsmanship. Ercol will be celebrating its 100th birthday in 2020 and preparations are already underway. We look forward to celebrating with them. ercol.com

for homeware. The colour combination of red and pink is one that I keep returning to, and is very present in this collaboration for Habitat - it is quintessentially Shrimps! P H : What is your own home like? And
P H : Had you thought of transferring
your dream home?
Shrimps’s style to interiors before? H W : It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and always thought my prints and illustrations could look amazing on rugs and bed sheets. I always have so many ideas and I’m so happy that I’ve had this opportunity with Habitat, whose homeware I’ve always loved!
H W : My home has lots of colour and pattern,
P H : Where did you begin with the
collection for Habitat? H W : I went into the Shrimps archive and
picked out my favourite doodles and prints that I’d always thought could work perfectly
however I would say that it is not over the top, there is still a feeling of simplicity which I think is important for creating a sense of calm. I love particular colour combinations in both fashion and homeware, red and pink is one that I’ve definitely used a lot in my house and my collections, including our Habitat collection. My dream home would be a bigger version of my current home, with more tiles and more outdoor space, I love the feeling of greenery coming into a house, tiled indoor courtyards are my favourite thing, I would love one of those - very Italian!

P H : Your background is in textiles.
How are fashion textiles different from interiors ones? H W : To me they aren›t that different, interior textiles always inspire my fashion collections, and vice versa. P H : What are your favourite pieces
from the collection? H W : I love the Doodle rug, it is one of my
favourite Shrimps prints and just looks so beautiful as a rug. P H : Tell us about the creatures and
characters. H W : The characters are all from my
imagination and I have been making them up and drawing them for as long as I can remember. The Doodle print was literally created from my drawings on a piece of paper that I had been doodling on over a few weeks, I often doodle in important meetings. At the time I was researching nursery rhymes and the work of the artist Paula Rego, these doodles were definitely, subconsciously inspired by that.

interior? G A B R I E L L A K H A L I L : I think a mindful interior is a space that evokes feelings of peacefulness or mental tranquility. I wouldn’t necessarily point to any particular type of style but these are thoughtfully designed spaces created to help those in it to feel relaxed. Certain greenery is a common feature that can help create the feeling of a mindful space. P H : How does a successful space affect your mood? G K : I think that our surroundings affect our mood in a direct way. I feel that a successful space (depending on the style) can make us automatically feel tranquil, happy, relaxed or upbeat. The same goes for an unsuccessful space as well. I personally struggle a lot with darkness, so lighting is always one of my key focus points in any interior that I design.

P H : For a ‘calm interior’ we might
picture a minimalist white space – but your spaces are full of visual interest. How does one achieve a balance? G K : I do like minimal spaces but I am especially drawn to a room with unique features within its design. I think to achieve calmness, it all comes down to the selection and method used to arrange decor pieces for a particular space. For example, there might be a very beautiful pattern that I want to use on a sofa and therefore I will be sure to combine more simple understated armchairs into the room. This will allow for an overall calmness in the space but also visual interest at the same time. I do the same for styling, matching more striking objects with minimal colour and texture. P H : What makes space not calm? G K : I think that combining too many objects or styles together can create an overwhelming space. I am very aware of the pieces I incorporate within a space and try not to overload an interior with too much of anything. This can apply to accessories, artwork, colours, patterns or even furniture. P H : Where do you start when reworking a room? G K : I usually start with a feature design element in the room. Sometimes this is as simple as the sofa in a living room and other
times it can be an incredible artwork or even the wall colour. Usually, once this feature element is determined, everything falls into place from there. P H : Can you describe your personal style? G K : I am very drawn to eclectic and timeless style, so I try to use this as an ethos to my own personal approach to style. That being said, I am always inspired by travel, vintage design, and art exhibitions and therefore my interest in colour and decor changes from time to time depending on the project or current inspiration. P H : What is your home like? G K : My home is simple in a way. I have a mostly neutral palette with lots of artwork and greenery everywhere. I feel that this type of space really helps me feel most comfortable. At the other end of the spectrum, I just recently painted my office a striking green and went completely out of my comfort zone - I have to say I love it.
A successful space can make us automatically feel tranquil, happy, relaxed or upbeat P H : What first led you to interiors? G K : My background is in art and I have
always been very interested in how great art can transform an interior. I started to freelance as an art consultant, buying art for residential homes in London. From there I realised how much I loved the interior element of the job and started to also incorporate interior styling and design as part of my career. gabriellakhalil.com

CO LO U R HOME admires Bethan Gray’s new collection for Anthropologie Words E V E H E R B E R T

20-year veteran of the design industry, Bethan Gray is inspired by a love of travel, art and culture. The Welsh designer established her eponymous studio in 2008, and now designs best-selling statement collections for global retailers and brands. Her private collections are sold through Lane Crawford, Liberty and Harrods; her work features extensively in global media; and she has exhibited in London, Milan, Paris and New York. Her new collaboration with Anthropologie showcases her contemporary interpretation of patterns created by indigenous American cultures across a range of products and furniture. Both Gray and Anthropologie are brands synonymous with culture, craft and artisan materials. By merging Gray’s unique designs with Anthropologie’s penchant for unique, luxurious homeware, a furniture collection which beautifully captures cultural stories through craft and pattern has emerged. The range features a carefully curated array of products referencing ancient pottery found in the dwellings of the Acozma Pueblo Mesa and ancient Native American cultures. Use of pattern, form and a soft, natural palette of rose pink, charcoal, mint green and brass ensures that individual items from across the range all combine harmoniously. Highlights include the Feather bar cabinet – inspired by the Puebloan feather motif and cast in resin from an original hand-carving, rugs realised in cool, calming tones of blue-green and ivory indented with subtle raised and flattened
54
details, and curvaceous mirrors structured with iridescent frames. Gray’s material expertise is in evidence in the deftly combined use of Carrara, gleaming brass and glass, sumptuous velvet and solid wood across the collection. "Everything I design starts with a story," says Gray. "In this case I started researching indigenous American cultures and was quickly drawn to the graphic patterns, forms and motifs of the Ancestral and Acoma Puebloans – they look so contemporary even though they are really ancient. I just thought they were beautiful and perfect for Anthropologie." The range extends to the Feather occasional and dining chairs with brass legs and velvet upholstery available in three colourways; the Feather bed (king or queen) with a hardwood frame, brass legs and velvet upholstery available in three colourways; the Feather bar cabinet in oak veneer with a cast resin
door available in mint or cream; the marble dining table made from Carrara marble with steel and brass legs; the Acoma buffet with its poplar wood case and glass door, elevated with brass leaf detailing; the Feather coffee table made from Carrara marble and resin; and the Sculptural side table – in mint or charcoal – made from mango wood, inlaid bone and resin. To celebrate London Design Festival and the launch of the collection, Anthropologie will be hosting an in-conversation event on 18 September with lifestyle journalist Fiona McCarthy and Bethan Gray. anthropologie.co.uk

aunched on to the market in 1965 and designed in conjunction with renowned Swiss architect Fritz Haller the USM Haller system has become a watchword for timeless design all over the world. In 1988 it was decided in Germany for the first time ever that the USM Haller furniture system is a work of applied art and should be protected by copyright. Its acceptance into the Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York (USA) at the end of 2001 was a high distinction and confirmed the artistic character of the product. The design classic is used in offices and public buildings as well as increasingly in the style conscious home. Each component is available in a variety of vibrant colours and because of its modular nature you can have fun creating a bespoke design that can be changed if your needs or desires change. USM Modular Furniture has created individual items of furniture that are designed to grow with the owner’s changing needs. The modular system allows for customised solutions which can be extended and varied along with the option to change the colour of the steel panels providing sufficient room for individual flexibility and creativity. A constant feature of the USM Haller is its chrome ball-and-tube frame, everything else - colour, size, shape, functionality – is up to you. Create a home that is as unique as you are with USM’s range of colours, which include: Golden Yellow, Pure Orange, USM Ruby Red, Gentian Blue, and USM Green.
From an almost endlessly versatile set on standard parts, create a small sideboard, whole-wall shelving, or almost anything else you can imagine. Not only aesthetically pleasing, the USM Modular Furniture Haller is the ideal solution for your storage needs, with bookends, boxes and accessories to accompany Haller and make organisation easy. The modular system’s is fantastically simple, however it is the Swiss precision in which the components are made that give the furniture the strength, versatility and clean lines that have made USM Haller a design classic. Launched on to the market in 1965 the USM Haller system has become a watchword for timeless design all over the world. In 1988 it was decided in Germany for the first time ever that the USM Haller furniture system is a work of applied art and should be protected by copyright.

esigner Annick Petersen says her designs are influenced by the London landscape. “I saw some bricks used in a building facade that were creating interesting triangle shapes and they morphed into the woven leather lampshade design. It is always everyday life and the things around me that inspire me.” Alp is a London-based design studio founded by Swiss-born interior architect and designer Annick Petersen, who worked as an interior designer for many years before setting up her own studio in 2009. Since then she has combined interior design projects with the development of her own home accessories range. The Alp philosophy is to create simple elegant products that are designed with longevity in mind. The pieces are contemporary with classic details that makes them versatile. Annick was one of the first designers to start working with copper wire, with her range of wire mesh lights in 2014. The new Woven Noir lighting and living range is taking Alp Design to the dark side. The new shades are made from black leather-like cord that winds and knots to create a dramatic geometric web and the new matt black leather stools fit together to make a sophisticated bench. Tactile and textured hand-made items such as these, bring welcome warmth and individuality to our digitally-dominated homes. When combined with marble and steel candle holders, the whole collection reflects Petersen’s passion for using simple, high quality materials that complement each other.

think I have been here for about 22 years. It hasn’t always been the same; it was a complete dump when I first saw it. You couldn’t even get into most of the rooms because the doors didn’t open. It was just awful – one of my daughters wouldn’t even come inside. She was nine or ten years old, and I remember her saying: ‘Mum, how could you buy a place with such a disgusting-coloured front door?’ But it was big, and I was sick of living in a small flat in Stoke Newington. My two daughters didn’t have their own bedrooms, so it was time to move on. We had to have everything redone. I remember not having enough money left to paint it when the work was done, so my builder kindly filled up a big metal rubbish bin with paint and managed to give each wall two coats in one weekend. And it’s just evolved from then on. About eight years ago I had to have the house underpinned, so I thought that I should make any changes I wanted to do then, because I had
decided to stay here for life. I extended the downstairs, so I could live there, converted the upstairs into a flat, insulated all the walls, had new floors laid, had new windows made to match the originals but with double glazing and sound-insulated the ceilings. I really went for it. I had a lovely garden before, but it was destroyed during the work. I didn’t want to spend another 12 years working on a new one, so I decided to get someone to help me. I wrote a letter to landscape designer Todd LongstaffeGowan and he happened to like it. I didn’t really know who he was, I think I had just seen a garden of his I liked. He came along and turned out to be very famous and expensive. I thought I wouldn’t be able to afford him and then he said, ‘Just pay my wine bill.’ I thought it would be really uncool to ask him how much that would be, but it turned out to not be too much. I finished all the work in two years and thought, ‘right, that’s it, I don’t have to move or do any more work ever again. I can just sit pretty.’

I didn’t expect to fall in love at this stage in my life; mostly because I’m very fussy. But I’m moving into my partner’s place. It’s hard living between two places and it’s certainly a bit unsettling for my pottery, which I started when I retired from working in publishing fulltime. I didn’t think I was creative or artistic at all, and then I did a week-long course with Sandy Brown in Devon and I was unleashed. Christophe, my partner, is building me a studio more than two-and-a-half times bigger than my one now, which is hard to resist. He’s also letting me do up the basement flat, so I’ll have my own space. It will be fun to find a balance between our two styles. We overlap a lot, but he’s a bit more severe than me; he wouldn’t cover his Le Corbusier chaise lounge in floral linen. I’ll miss the neighbourhood. It’s very eclectic around here; there are Orthodox Jewish, West Indian, Bangladeshi and Indian communities, with a bit of slow gentrification. There are a lot of lefties, and a do-goody group of us called the East/West Bank Action Group. We look after the nature reserve opposite the house, which acts as a green corridor for 48 different types of birds and stretches down to Abney Park Cemetery in Stoke Newington. We’ve really turned it around.

hen choosing the right tile for your home, viewing the physical product is essential. It’s easy to hide behind a screen to make life that little bit easier, but in order to make a truly well informed decision, talking to an expert and seeing the tile in the “flesh” is an integral part to the journey. Buried at the end of Munster Road lies Tiles and Beyond - one of Fulham’s best-kept secrets. Paving the way as a boutique business that prides itself on serving the local community first and foremost, its collection of premium tile is large to say the least. Porcelain, mosaic, natural stone, ceramics and worktops, there’s something for everyone in the surprisingly compact showroom – which from the outside doesn’t look as though it hosts such a wide range. Inside, it boasts large display walls and bays to view the tile
in an active environment. The driving force behind the eight-year-old company is Priyal Patel, whose passion for interiors and customer service has helped her to build this boutique empire from nothing. As an independent retailer, she provides what can only be described as a genuinely bespoke service: outstanding customer service and only the

best quality materials. But what makes Tiles and Beyond stand out is its focus on the individual customer. Priyal invites clients to come and view the tile, get a feel for the collection of marble, limestone, faux wood and mosaic and help them to make a choice based on what is best for their home. Due to the sheer quantity of wares, it’s not limited to the typical locations of tile placement either. Whilst classic marble worktops in the kitchen and Travertine tile in the bathroom are still available, there’s also the possibility of giving new life to a patio with a smooth cream Limestone, or a touch of class to the bedroom with Elmwood Ebano porcelain. It all depends on your own personal vision, something that Priyal will talk through with you with an expert eye and years of experience behind her. She understands that a balance between the timeless and the new is essential for the home - adding a touch of the rustic to the contemporary and vice versa. It’s a truly personal, friendly service that will add artistic flair to your vision.

These striking illustrations and vintage typographical slogans are further contrasted with show-stopping black and white photography from the Trunk Archive, resulting in a magnificent melting pot of graphic lines, monochrome shades and bold colours. Fusing architecture, typography and midcentury pop culture, this carefully curated edit introduces imagery from across the decades in a fresh and fun way, inviting customers to draw parallels and experiment themselves. H
ere’s a riddle. Last night while we were having supper in the kitchen, the bin lid opened. As if a ghost was throwing away a sweet wrapper. The lid opened, waited for a few moments, then gently closed again. We carried on talking and it happened again. Our conversation revolved around our recent weekend in Cambridge. The bin’s behaviour didn’t surprise us at all. Why was this?
In most kitchens, you hardly notice the bin as you cast your rubbish – separating recycling, landfill and compost – into its compartment and move on. But when your bin is one of Simplehuman’s sensor and voiceactivated bins, you find yourself interacting with it on a whole new level. Have you cracked the riddle yet? Our bin is voice-activated. This means that when you shout “Open, can!” at it, it opens. Of course, nobody in England would ever call a large, 60 litre rubbish bin a ‘can’ – a can is a small vessel that holds a fizzy drink. And of course, voice activation is very much open to interpretation. But happily, our bin – Candice, as we now call it – responds to most words beginning with ‘ca’ – including ‘Cambridge’ and ‘car’ and ‘camping’, all of which were being discussed in our kitchen last night. You can imagine what happened. However, there is a flaw. Candice struggles with male voices, especially Scottish ones. So for ease, I am going to refer to her as female. For voices that she feels comfortable with, her range is wide enough to cover most of our kitchen. Plus, she has favourites. I notice that she’s more eager to oblige with me than anyone else – is this because it was me who unboxed her and my voice she heard first? Which would make her almost like my third child, just more compliant and less needy. Now, whenever anybody walks past the bin, they speak to it. Sometimes Candice responds with a welcome, sometimes not, depending on their accents and the number

of ‘ca’ sounds. Happily, there’s also a motion sensor, so we don’t always need to talk. You can wave a piece of rubbish at it and it will reliably open gratefully. We love this bin. Not only is it spacious enough, at almost 60 litres, to accommodate our council’s annoying fortnightly collections, but it looks good, has a surprisingly small footprint and even a brilliant concealed compartment for its own perfectly fitting liners. We plug it into the mains but there’s a battery compartment too, so powercuts can’t touch it. Bins have never been better.
SIMPLE HUMAN Simplehuman’s 58 litre rectangular sensor bin with voice and motion sensor comes in stainless steel, rose gold, dark bronze or black steel in either single or dual compartment models. From £229.99. simplehuman.com

he look is described as ‘classic modern’ the quality is superb and the prices are not unreasonable... this is Tomas Kitchen Living. Founder and head designer Tomas Hinton opened his first London showroom in Hampstead Garden Suburb in the spring of 2016 after establishing showrooms in St Albans and Cambridge, where everything is made. A kitchen project will usually begin with a visit to one of the three showrooms. This can be for an appointment with Tomas or simply a drop-in during normal opening hours. On show in all three sites are impressive displays of solid oak drawers, ply carcasses and gorgeous earthy colours. If you like what you see and budgets are more or less in alignment, the next step is a design meeting. Kitchen projects vary in price according to size and specification, but a typical kitchen with appliances and tops usually comes in between 28 and 33k including VAT. Tomas have also developed a really interesting furniture side too. Dining tables, lounge tables, sideboards and the like all complement the kitchens beautifully and work equally well on their own. Furthermore, Tomas are dealers for many top Danish furniture and lighting brands such as Louis Poulsen and Carl Hansen & Son. The design details, the quality and the colours all combine and form something special, something different - something you’re going to love. tomas-kitchen-living.co.uk

t’s possible to sum Luna & Curious up in two words: dream boutique. Possible, but not quite fair – because even this most enticing of sobriquets can’t do justice to the range and quality of goodies stocked in the brand’s stylish London emporium. Centred around the company’s own range of high-end clothing (for little ones and mamas), homeware and accessories, the three founders describe it as a “tiny department store”. But the strength of Luna & Curious isn’t in the number of items on offer – though they do manage to carry a surprising amount – but in the sheer loveliness of every last thing. Simply put, it’s no surprise that three very tasteful women are behind the brand, and that they’re still involved in every element of the business they’ve been building for over a decade. Their stylish fingerprints are all over the shop’s selection, from their own artfully boho yet beautifully luxe designs to the items they source from like-minded makers across the globe. If you’re ever stuck for gifting inspiration, one trip to their shop or website will cure the affliction. And if you need to know what styles will be filling the wardrobes of the most stylish young ‘uns next year, pay a visit to Luna & Curious this year – they’re a reliable indicator (and often originator) of the best ideas about to come down the pipe. We’re big fans. Can you tell? lunaandcurious.com

It’s interesting to note that the station shut in 1932 due to underuse – residents of this part of town were always too wealthy to travel underground. hese recently refurbished serviced residences are luxuriously finished – with a nod to midcentury design and some Art Deco touches, they remain firmly contemporary. A huge spherical LED chandelier above the bed provides a focal point and though square footage in this postcode comes at a premium, there’s a good sense of space. In the living area there’s a comfortable sofa as well as a separate sofa bed, a large TV, a dining table and a kitchen corner with a fridge, two hobs and an oven. You could even throw a dinner party here.

TO THE TOWER
When Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson bought Sissinghurst Castle in Kent in 1930, parts were so ruined they had to be demolished. What they created from the wreckage became one of the country’s best-loved interiors Words N A N CY A L S O P

he sitting-room is lovely except that the opening is too big. My bedroom, wc and bathroom are divine. The primroses are superb. Dine. Bed. Rebecca curled up beside me. Home.” The image of diplomat and diarist Harold Nicolson, one half of the famous duo responsible for the creation of Sissinghurst Castle in Kent as we know it, cosying up with his wire-haired terrier represents in microcosm all that is seductive about the National Trust-maintained exemplar of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The other half of that pair was, famously, Vita SackvilleWest, writer, plantswoman, garden visionary, sometime lover of Virginia Woolf and inspiration for the latter’s androgynous titular Orlando. That Sissinghurst is a castle, albeit the remains of a once-stately Elizabethan fortress, befits Vita’s lineage; having been born at the altogether grander Knole just down the road in Sevenoaks, described as “a medieval village with its square turrets and its grey walls, its hundred chimneys sending blue threads up into the air”, she was accustomed to grandeur, though the estate was ultimately bequeathed to her cousin after her father’s death. That it was concurrently a place where husband and wife would retreat from the tower to the South Cottage, now open to the public, and nestle down amid their books and artfully battered possessions was befitting of the bohemian circles they moved in, courtesy of being on the fringes of the Bloomsbury Set.

Vita liked her possessions well-worn and lived-in (even new items had to be given a strategic knock-about)
Comprised of a 16th-century tower and other scattered buildings, to which is attached perhaps the most famous garden in England, Sissinghurst was a wreck when Vita and Harold bought it in 1930. Standing on the site of a former stone manor house, complete with moat, from the Middle Ages, it was rebuilt as an Elizabethan mansion before falling into ruin in the aftermath of the Civil War. By the time that Vita and Harold got their hands on it, parts were in such disrepair that they had to be demolished, its most striking survivor a four-storey red-brick Elizabethan tower with octagonal turrets. It is here that Vita sequestered herself away, up a creaky wooden spiral staircase, surrounded by her books, to write. Admittance to her sanctuary, even to family members, was rare. Today visitors can climb the winding stairs to take in the relatively Spartan scene, which articulates impeccably Vita’s style. A preference adopted from her time at Knole, she liked her possessions wellworn and lived-in (even new items had to be

given a strategic knock-about), as evidenced by the heftily hewn writing desk, on top of which sits two photographs: one of Harold, and one of Virginia Woolf. That the two portraits sat side-by-side without friction was thanks to Harold and Vita’s open relationship (he had affairs with men, while she pursued relationships with other men and with women; the arrangements did not seem to impact on their shared love of Sissinghurst). Behind these images of her two great loves hangs a heavy Flemish tapestry in a soft blue hues, featuring a garden scene which served, perhaps, as inspiration for Vita’s long-running weekly gardening column, In Your Garden, in The Observer. It remains, after all, as a horticultural trailblazer that Sissinghurst is so renowned. “I like muddling things up; and if a herb looks nice in a border, then why not grow it there? Why not grow anything anywhere so long as it looks right where it is? That is, surely, the art of gardening,” wrote Vita, whose artistic eye was responsible for the glorious Arts and Crafts garden. The historical importance of Sissinghurst Castle Garden comes from its role in conveying Gertrude Jekyll’s design philosophy, the most influential feature of which is the White Garden, which propagated Jekyll’s idea of using colour themes in planting design. The garden straddles the organised (it comprises of a series of ten ‘rooms’, divided by pink brick walls and high-clipped hedges) and the informal, allowing Vita the artist-gardener
to plant as she saw fit. Each ‘room’ contains its own drama, opening out into new vistas as you move between each and sending the admirer on a walk rich with discovery at every turn. It was a creation that husband and wife collaborated on in perfect symbiosis; while Harold drew the lines of the rooms, Vita planted them. It was not the only aspect of their shared life here in which they found harmony. Their joint love of books find expression in the library, an exquisite long room lined, naturally with their books (their extensive 11,000-striong collection makes it the third largest library in the National Trust’s care), and decorated with busts, weighty tapestries and Chinese lacquer cabinets, thought to hail from Knole and crafted from a rare wood similar to ebony. But perhaps the key to the harmonious relationship that allowed them to create this enduring work of horticultural history, can be found in their decision to grant themselves their own space. (Indeed, despite their open relationship, tensions arose between Harold and Vita’s lovers; some – Violet Keppel – he found manipulative; and he clashed with Virginia Woolf on account of her pacificism and his, rather unfortunate, friendship with Oswald Mosley.) While Vita retreated to her writing room, Harold withdrew to the South Cottage to write and contemplate. Here at the cottage, built from a fragment of the great Elizabethan mansion and overlooking the sunset colours of the Cottage Garden, visitors will find his book room, as well as the separate bedrooms of husband and wife – surely instrumental in the longevity of their marriage, and the harmonious work on the project that kept them together.

The village
arrow Cottage is everything you would expect from a cottage in the Cotswolds: thatched roof, a cosy living room with a fire, low ceilings and a beautiful garden. The bathroom in particular really sets this cottage apart, with its heated floor, walk-in shower and copper roll-top bath (which we made full use of during our stay). The kitchen is well-equipped and well-stocked on arrival – you’ll find organic eggs, bread and jam as well as the icing on an already-appealing cake: Alice in Wonderland-style mini bottles of gin, vodka and whisky, complete with tonic. The grown-ups heartily enjoyed a refreshing G&T after our long drive.
he cottage sits in the village of Churchill, which encapsulates perfectly the beauty of the Cotswolds with its venerable stone houses, luscious green and historic church. After a gentle walk around the village we found a lovely pub, The Chequers, which served delicious food. All you need is the soft thud of leather on willow and a drop of English sunlight and you have the ingredients of a veritable idyll.

here’s plenty to do in Churchill and the surrounding areas. The nearest town is the impossibly genteel Chipping Norton and further afield are beautiful villages like Stow-on-the-Wold and Burton-on-Water (the model village is worth a visit for some fun pics). Make sure you give Daylesford Organic Farm a visit; it’s just a short drive away, a working farm with a glossy Soho Farmhouse feel, offering tasty brunches and lunches made with local produce, as well as a spa and wondrous shop. We also visited Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill, where Giffords Circus was in attendance. It’s well worth checking when they’re next there, as their performances make a great centrepiece to a family day out.

MY FAVOURITE PIECE OF ART... ‘Untitled’ by Sadequain: Sadequain’s paintings and calligraphy mesmerised me many years ago when I was studying the history of art. This untitled piece has always been one of my favourites.
MY FAVOURITE BUILDING... Is our family home in Lynga, Sweden: Spending almost every summer here since I was four in the Swedish countryside with my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins has filled me with warm memories that I will never forget.
MY FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION... Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. As a lover of the the outdoors and history Lake Atitlan stood out for me during my travels through Central America. From one of the most beautiful lakes in the world to Mayan villages and volcanoes, Guatemala has it all.
MY FAVOURITE PIECE FROM OUR CURRENT COLLECTION... MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER... Geoffrey Bawa. Having not been familiar with his work prior to my first visit to Sri Lanka, I was struck with his unique designs that merged local with international style and came to be known as ‘Tropical Moderernism’. I have now made five trips to Sri Lanka to see more of his work.

the vintage overdyes are my favourites as they merge beautiful tradional rugs with contemporary colours. The rugs being between 60-80 years old adds story and character. Of these ‘Under the Sea’ has always caught my eye due to the earthy tones of green and blue that I find very calming.
