designing city for the people

a proposal of designing city for people

Based on the site data we analysed, we came out with the evaluation of the qualitative aspects in relations to the two key intangibles measures that we chose, convenient and interactive. Bukit Bintang street is an urbanscape full of potential urban development. In conclusion, to make Bukit Bintang street more convenient in terms of accessibility and also to enhance interactive elements within, creating stronger relationship between settings and people, our approach is to conceive a relatively more people-centric environment in order to overcome the analysed issues in Bukit Bintang street.

1 High density of people congested in an intimate street due to high human traffic needs to cross the road junction.

2 Four lane traffic jam caused challenges for pedestrian crossing.

3 Broader street curbs to accommodate human congestion while waiting for vehicular traffic.

1 In-between interstitial space created at street nodal points to accommodate interactive activities.

2 Outdoor cafes and eateries maximised the pedestrian walkway experience and provides avenue for interactions.

3 The vehicular movement of street were bounded by trees along the street edges to form visual segregations and provide human shading to aid in pedestrian use.

1 Architectural elements provide shading and settings for interaction while steps creating secondary seatings for the passerby.

2 Jaywalking is frequent culture in using the street along this neighbourhood section. Small trees provide mild shading.

3 Five foot walkway sheltering people from sun exposure, engaging with people and forming different city at eye level along Bukit Bintang street.

Architectural Design Studio IV children learning capsule

a proposal of children learning capsule

Imagination, is the wick in the candle of learning; whereas knowledge, is the ember fire." Present-day, gaining knowledge from the papersources or in the classroom restricted children's imagination. We strongly believe that imagination is the foundation stone of knowledge as the synergy between fascination and wisdom will create a greater compound impact in children development. Children need to explore independently, to let their imagination go wild. Therefore, we envisioned a children learning capsule, encircled by mother nature that triggers potential imagination within children to learn fun. The proposed children learning capsule that comes along with different stages of imagination, holding space for them to visualize their unleashed imagination. Go beyond the learning through reading, and explore through imaginary thoughts; make the mental blueprint, and begin to build their own realm.

Everyone has their own insensible sense of limitless imagination. However, people actually forgo the gift to explore around.

Exploring unleashing imagination within oneself will help learning but in a fun way.

Experiential Space 3 - Empathy Imagination (Upper Level) 6. Experiential Space 4 - Strategic Imagination 7. Communal Space - Constructive Imagination

Imagination is the foundation of adopting and rethinking current knowledge or skills. It may then be a tool, to dig new skills or knowledge out from the universe.

Site Context

Spatial Experience

Design Strategies and Intentions

Fostering fun learning through imagination which also significantly enhances the physical, social and cognitive users development.

Encompassing the children learning capsule with mother nature instead of the concrete jungle for the users to be as wild as possible. The nature provokes the five senses within ones mind.

Shipping Containers

To design a learning capsule without changing the modular system and skin structure of the containers. Hus, the configuration of containers s taken into consideration to provide certain spatial qualities with proposed activities.

Paper tubes are integrated in the design with shipping containers. It is used as structural supporting systems, installations and interactive elements.

Providing a spatial quality from the configuration of the shipping containers on different levels and the spatial arrangement.

Creative Potentials

Evoking the limitless imagination of the users from the proposed programmes. The different stages of imagination develop the potential skills of children

Sequential Spatial Experiences

Hollow Imagination Allowing free flow of creative thinking in an “empty space.

Empathy Imagination

Understanding emotionally what others are experiencing from their frame.

Strategic Imagination Recognising and evaluating opportunities through mental scenarios.

Constructive Imagination

Considering and developing hypotheses from different pieces of information.

a proposal of children learning capsule

Programmes and Constructions

Empathy Imagination

Stalactite formation setting is mimicked using paper tubes hanged from the ceiling of the container. The children transit from one dimension to another, imagining themselves like a time-traveller popping out to anywhere they want. The paper tube stalactites arranged in a rhythmic fancy way for the children to find their way out, integrated with the daylight penetrated through the upper skylight to cast light and shadow across the journey.

Constructive Imagination

a proposal of children learning capsule

A communal space is served from the spatial volume created by the juxtaposition of 3 shipping containers. It engages interaction among all user groups together in a space. The children can also use the paper tube columns to rest or play around depending on their creative imaginations.

Strategic Imagination

The users would need to walk in a volume tilted 30 degree placing from a higher level. The children have to plan, imagine, strategise inorder to figure out the best way possible to pass through the space. The glass panel on the first part of the floor made possible for the children to imagine themselves floating in the air while dodging their flexible body across the paper tubes rising up from the communal space. The children can slide down to the ground level with a roller slide of paper tubes or running down through the ramp.

Hollow Imagination

The container is slightly tilted to provide minor difficulties as the children move around. The metallic sound triggers a more realistic effect as they move their body vigilantly across the container from a descending level of light intensity.

a proposal of children learning capsule

Interior setting of paper tubes intersecting from the faces of the shipping container allows penetration of natural daylight into the container. Thus, beam-like sun rays are created inside the dark atmosphere for the children to play around with. Imagine the children avoiding the light-rays, pretend play as spies, wouldn’t it be exciting?

Architectural Design Studio V kajang art centre

a proposal of kajang art centre

Who is the void, the bluesky or the fluffy cloud or the picturesque tree? We need a space to cater all the scattered pieces of the “legendary” Kajang. Or we can just say, Kajang was miserably seeking for its clear position in finding the lost essence of their significance in traditional culture and art. Still exist, but it is submerging. The spaces designed for “hard drive” are recessed into the building spaces. Not just spilled public realm into the building ground levels, raised up to the highest floor as well as the Kajang community life between the buildings around the city at eye level is not greatly influenced by the public spaces on the ground. The community need more life between buildings. So, why not make the building itself as another spaces for all, between these Kajang traditional shophouses?

Design Process and Strategies

Contextual belt axis Cut the interstitial mass to create spaces defined along the site axis to present the art in social and culture way of Kajang.

Squeeze the heavy mass services are mainly recessed inwards the party wall side to maximize the vertical directional movement in both public realm and performing art rhythm.

Elevate the mass Platforms of spaces to direct people to use as life between buildings vertically.

Carve out the form To bring daylight in the “harddrive” spaces to show remnant in traditional shophouse typology (appreciate airwell).

Art formation Art can be in any form, anything moved people heart. In form of mind, body, language or fusion of any. The spatial configured clearly define the statement here portraying Kajang art and culture in its organised form.

Transform function of angular transition Static function to lengthen people stay and extension of public spaces into the building ground. “My walking is my dancing”.

Overturn the skin To create openness view to/from the back alley. The skin were replaced along the back alley in perpendicular to the river axis.

Replicate the art in using five foot walkway generously Spur up the public realm within the context by creating communal deckings for culture and social.

social commentary:

celebrate the connections

A social infrastructure for all Are we going to create a new icon to showcase the culture and social aspects of our site, OR Are we able to tie the connections together, and let the cultures of the community synthesized harmoniously in Johor Bahru? OR Even, the city lobby itself can be part of the social/ culture gems of the urban community?

Site contextual relationship

Pedestrians tend to walk in fast pace to avoid irritating bird dropping. Finance Institutional building (banks) surrounded the street open spaces.

The beginning strip of the street is exposed and without seatings.

Active busking create visual connection with hectic traffic users.
