Tindo Solar Bus The Adelaide City Council has raised the standard in international sustainability with the introduction of the world's first solar-powered electric bus that is recharged using 100% solar energy. The bus named Tindo, the Kaurna Aboriginal word for 'sun' is the newest addition to the Adelaide City Council's Adelaide Connector Bus service, a free service for the people of Adelaide. Manufactured by New Zealand company Designline International, the bus doesn't have a combustion engine which makes it a very quiet, zero emissions vehicle. Other features of the vehicle include a regenerative braking system, saving up to 30% energy consumption. Tindo is air-conditioned and can carry up to 40 passengers, with 25 standard seats, 2 seats especially designed for disabled passengers and room for 13 standing passengers. The bus has covered over 55,000 kilometers since February and saved the Council over 14,000 litres of diesel and saved the environment over 70,000kg of CO2-e in its first year.

SunPods Solar-Roofed Bus If you’ve ever experienced the varied odors emanating from the back of a long-haul bus, you’ll appreciate the latest advancement from solar panel manufacturer SunPods. The San Jose-based company debuted the world’s first solar-power assist system for buses, consisting of those four thin solar panels that line the roof of the bus. The panels charge on-board batteries, which in turn power air conditioning and internet connections. Developed with Bauer’s Intelligent Transportation, a San Francisco based eco-friendly charter company, the system allows Bauer’s buses to meet the anti-idling laws of 25 states without having to shut off creature comforts like WiFi and — most importantly for those sitting closest to the restroom — air conditioning. According to SunPods, the panels allow bus operators to “effectively meet anti-idling standards without compromising passenger comfort,” so drivers can keep the AC on even when the diesel engine is off.

Urban Solar Train The modern Urban Solar Train (UST) is a new and innovative approach to passenger transport on roads where not only the design is modern but most importantly the fuel concept is, as it uses alternative energies: electro motors driven by electric and photovoltaic (solar) energy. By using these renewable energy sources the Urban Solar Train defines the ecological people mover concept of the future. The train has a primary and a secondary power supply. Equipped with a replaceable battery in the locomotive and photovoltaic (solar) panels on the roof the train runs for approx. 4 - 5 hours. Thanks to the in-house battery replacement solution, a fully loaded secondary battery can be replaced within minutes providing double the running time. The speed of the Urban Solar Train is electronically limited to 25 km/h. In the near future the Urban Solar Train will drive in the inner cities around the world, to act as a feeder to various public transportation systems and to reduce the congestion in CO2-contaminated areas.

Phileas BRT The Phileas BRT (Bus Rapid Transport) vehicle, developed by the Dutch company Advanced Public Transport Systems (APTS) can drive itself automatically on a dedicated track as well as being manually driven on normal roads. The Phileas system is in fact active and has been in use since 2004. A hybrid-electric drive makes the vehicle up to 30 per cent more fuel efficient than other buses of comparable size. In semi-automatic mode the driver automatic mode all three functions are performed by the vehicle with speeds up to 70 kilometres per hour (44 mph). An electronic guidance system is following the magnetic markers mounted every 4 to 5 metres in the road surface for reference. If deviations of more than half a metre (1.6 ft) occur, either in automatic or semiautomatic mode, the vehicle is automatically stopped.

Volvo 28m BRT Governments across the globe are slowly but surely waking up to environmental concerns and the impact of inner city pollution as well as seeing the need for public transportation that not only helps the environment but assist its population in getting from A to B. Brazil in Latin America has been at the forefront in becoming an eco friendly nation and have just released what they say is an eco friendly bus and the worlds largest at the same time. Manufactured by Volvo in Brazil, this bus measures a staggering 28 metres in length, is 2.6 metres wide and has the capacity of seating 177 passengers. Curitiba City Hall unveiled the bus on April 5th and put it into service on the 6th. The bus runs on biodiesel made from soybeans. City Hall officials said that the bus can make its 22.4 kilometres route, with nine stops, in 25 minutes. That is 10 minutes less than conventional buses. “It’s a modern bus, a comfortable and environmentally friendly vehicle, ensuring better quality of public transport for the city of Curitiba, Ducci.

LondoNavigator In the summer of 2008, London Mayor Boris Johnson launched a worldwide competition to create a replacement for the classic Routemaster bus. The competition closed in Sept 2008, and winners were invited to an awards ceremony in London's Westminster on 19th Dec 2008. I was delighted to be awarded joint second place, behind winners Aston Martin cars and Copoco. The finished bus is planned to hit the streets in 2011, and will be an amalgamation of the winning designs. More information can be found at the TFL Website. The London Navigator has been conceptualised as a spiritual successor to the now classic Routemaster bus. The Routemaster is regarded as one of the key recognisable icons of London. It was felt that an equally distinctive replacement for the Routemaster is required to retain this iconography; a red bus that can only be associated with London, is easily distinguishable from the standard double-decker or bendy bus, and is quintessentially British. The overall approach has been to produce a unique and recognisable bus; a functional yet characterful new icon for London.

The seat DESIGN FOR USER EXPERIENCE - PEOPLE CENTERED DESIGN (Umea Institute ofDesign, Term project)Date: 2008 November - 2009 JanuaryDescription: During this project I have applied a more theoretical approach to identifying potential products. I have dealt with products and solutions for a special user group. Exploring users’ emotional responses and their needs for a certain product. I have studied everyday life activities and motivations of user groups in order to discover design opportunities for solving problems as well as offering new experiences in social and interaction patterns, dreams or values... Expressed in another way, it was not just a question of solving a problem functionally, I have tried to add an extra dimension, a social dimension. / the seat - is a concept aimed at the european school transport system, which has no traditions or habits of using school buses (despite positive safety parameters, which exceed all expectations).

Thedesign represents the new green world beginning with the transformationof the white leaves to the green. The vines are a timeline, reachingfor the goal at the end of the bus: to “Restore Planet Earth.”

Booze Bus CobaltNiche worked with Brimarco, a truck body building company, to win the tender for the design and supply of a fleet of new booze buses for the Victorian Police. The requirements for the new bus were clear; primarily, for assessing motorists blood alcohol levels the bus needed to be able to transport personnel and equipment to the testing site. Secondarily, the bus needed to act as a sign of police presence and perform as the Victorian Police weapon against drink driving. The design approach was much like designing a traditional office workstation system, with modular interior design paneling. The interior and exterior were developed concurrently, each affecting the other. The front cabin section needed to taper towards the nose of the bus to match the chassis. This proved to be a major design challenge; handling this transition from the sides to the front of the bus. The raking windscreen provided the solution, and the distinctive groove line cleverly balances the bulk of the rear of the bus.

VH1 'Hit the Road' Tour Bus Challenge One of the biggest disadvantages of living in Mumbai or any other Indian city is the lack of worthwhile live music. VH1 aims at changing the face of live music in India and mainly promote local city music bands of all genres. Solution The VH1 'Hit the Road' Tour Bus will call upon upcoming music acts from the city allowing them to promote themselves and their music. This one day event takes a band around the city, stopping at open spaces and crowded locations which draws people in to listen and enjoy live music. Concept The tour bus is designed in such a way that it does not take more than 10 minutes to set up stage, lights and sound as it is all in built and doesn’t require the venues to make prior arrangements. The short time span for setting up the stage allows the band to cover more locations in a day.
