A Conversation What’s the most important conversation for today ? I would say that the most important conversation for today would be about the future of the world and the future of the people who inhabit it.

what is the message ?

Who will your audience be ?

The message is that we are relying too much on technology as a race to do a lot of things for us, such as communication, people arent talking in person anymore we are relying on social media and networking sites to communicate.

My audience could be anyone, conversation is had by people all over the world.

When we talk with other people, the style of the conversation we have, the way we talk with one another, can vary significantly, particularly in the way we seek to change their minds (or even our own). Within each of these, the relationship is very different, including ranging from low to high respect and openness. Different types of conversation can have different goals and different assumptions about such aspects as relationships, power, status and so on. The Five Ds of Conversation: different ways of talking.

What’s the most important conversation for the future ? The most important conversation for the future to me would be a conversation about my personal future and where i would want to be in a few years when i have finished university.

What are your aims ? Where is the most important place for the conversation to take place ?

The most important place to be when taking part in a conversation is with other people who are involved in situations similar to you or with people enjoying the same experiences as you.

The aim at this moment in time is not very clear to me but i am hoping to create a piece of work that will help me to work with a wide arrey of materials in a professional manor.

Who will benefit ? Who will you speak to ? The opportunity to speak to anyone and everyone would be brilliant, to access conversations with new people and find out what they think about the future of conversation within the use of technology.

Considerations

How will the conversation be heard ? The Conversation could be heard in any way that is auditory for example from a recorder a video tape or even just from word of the mouth.

This will benefit a lot of people because i am hoping to get the messaage across to people that we dont just have rely on technology to be able to commuincate.

Types of Conversation

A Conversation The different types of conversation we have with different people varies, emotion is a big side to conversing with one another. A conversation can be had not only by people but by anything really, technology converses with other technology to make things work through a circuit, animals converse with each other in the ways of the noises they make such as a cat meowing or a dog barking. Singing could also be considered as a type of commuication, a lot of songs have a message to them and can be the starting point to a lot of conversation as we are a very into depth musical era at the moment. Conversation is one of the biggest things that affect the way the human race runs, without conversation amoungst people how would we know what we are feeling as people and how could we possibly evolve as a race without the help of conversation.

Do we benefit from having technology involved in how we communicate ? I think that in some cases we definitely do benefit from having technology as a part of our lives especially as it develops and evolves each year, we benefit from it within communication because it helps us stay in contact with people we know all around the world and keep in touch with different types of media. Families would find it very helpful due to being able to keep in contact with children and relatives if they do not live in the same region as they do.

A Conversation

Emotion ia a massive factor to commuicating through conversation because without emotion we wouldnt be able to tell from different types of conversations. Emotion can affect how we converse with each other in ways to which what we say during a conversation can be effected by how we are feeling, for example if we are feeling happy we are going to enjoy conversing about what makes us happy where as if we are angry this emotion can change the conversation in a big way and we may say things in a different manor or tone to the person we are communicating with.

or want to just communicate in general with others who are foreign. Different conversations A different type of conversation could be considered as somthing such as sign language used amoungst deaf and hard of hearing people, this is a unique way of communicating with others.

We often express our emotions through forms of conversation and especially forms of technology, in some cases our emotions get the better of us and cause us to take action in situations such as being annoyed.

Do we make Conversations without technology ? We often don’t take the opportunity to try and make a conversation with new people that we might meet on the street or in a shop, we do all as a people rely on the internet to help us stay in touch with people we wouldn’t normally converse with in everyday life. The only way I have found that we actually make the effort to converse with other people is when we are under the influence of alcohol where as under this influence we meet new people and turn from technology a little bit, if only we could be persuaded by this affect to converse with people a little bit more we wouldn’t have to rely on technology and messaging so much. People you meet on a night out and get to know really well might fade into the distance as friendship because we cannot make the change from using our most common way of communicating. What do we rely on technology for within an era of conversation ? We rely on apps and programmes such as google and translators to be able to make conversation with people who may not speak our language, due to the year we are in everything is a lot more cultured than it used to be and everybody has their own language barrier to try and get over when it comes not only just to conversation but to everything, things such as when people apply for jobs

Types of conversation

A Conversation Conversing with one another can also cause emotional connections between one or two people this leading from what was a standard stranger conversation to an evolving, developing relationship as a pair. We as a race also use direct emotion words in conversations such as ‘crying, frightened and love’ this is how we can connect into the conversation and react with an appropriate reply. Emotion through conversation is also recognised through the tone we use as we interact.

As well as conversational emotions we express certain body lanuage and hand gestures during conversations which can indicate to people what our mood may be at that moment in time. Certain people may suffer with a lack of social skills and not be able to make conversation as easily as others may, these are the type of people that turn to the help of technology when it comes to human interraction. But is social media sites really classed as human interraction these days ?.

Emotion in conversation

Zoe Freeman

Technology is taking over how we communicate with each other as people, rather than bewith each other and make the effort to find out about one another we are relying way too much on technology to do all of that for us.

A Conversation

How does emotion effect us within technology ? We use technology in this era to express our emotions through symbolism such examples as text messaging when we use faces/emoticons to show what we are feeling to the person that we are communicating with through text message, we use these on social media sites aswell such as facebook, instagram and and twitter.

Groups of people you see everywhere and rather than talking to each other about there day or things that are going on in each others lives that they might want to share they are more infactuated with the use of their phones, tablets and computers. My take on this epedemic of budding technology is because as people we can use tech to learn more about a person without the hassle of meeting them, the internet in this era has influenced a lot of todays youth, as we have more access to a variety of things via the internet and the effects of social media, this is now something that we all rely on as people.

Have emoticons revolutionised the way we message each other online and with tech ? My opinion of this revolutionised technology is that the emoticons do help us express our feelings better when in conversation because we dont have to re word things in to a way as such that the opposite person will understand what we are feeling when in the conversation, things such as facebook messanger emoticons which are more technical and actually move are another way we use technology to express what we are feeling without being in the presence of the person we are communicating with.

We have moved from and era of messenger pigeons and creating our own entertainment to now relying on technology to help us get through our days in the office or out and about, even the busiest of people rely on tech to help them get through each day and keep in contact with fellow workers and friends. Mobile phones especially have taken over people within the ways of converation as in how we communicate within groups, groups of people would often rather be with each other through online networking such as skype, mesenger, or online cameras, its taking over the way we used to do things. Apps for mobile phones play a large part in this because apps such as snapchat make it easier to communicate with other people using technology but also being able to see each other throught the use of imagery and text.

Communication is the activity of information exchange between two or more people in order to exchange intended meanings throughout a shared system of expressions, signs and semiotic rules. Communication usually occurs through a visual and or auditory exchange within the use of languages throughout the world of people.

Nonverbal communication is the sending or receiving of wordless messages. We can say that communication other than oral and written, such as gesture, body language, posture, tone of voice or facial expressions, is called nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is all about the body language of speaker. Nonverbal communication helps receiver in interpreting the message received. Often, nonverbal signals reflects the situation more accurately than verbal messages. Sometimes nonverbal response contradicts verbal communication and hence affect the effectiveness of message.

• My first idea is to create a small book/daily diary that i can jot down and keep track of certain conversations, with these conversations that i have i can then alter the type face of them to something that i can create making the type relevent to the conversation that is being held within the book. I also thought that as well as the type face expressing the type of conversation that maybe changing the colour of the text as the conversation flows into other subjects could express the feelings within the conversation. Also to experiment within the dfferent mediums of book that i could choose from. Idea 2

Idea 1

• The second idea that i have come up with is to create an animation based upon the everyday facebook inbox messenger emoji’s and text message emoticons. There are many different ways that i could actually go about this idea, especialy within the layout of it. I could create my own message backdrop for the animation and create my own unique emoji for this. The aim is to demonstrate how we converse through technology and how we also show emotion through the use of little animated character across the internet.

Idea Generation

This little emoji that i will have created will come to life within the conversation and show the mood throughout certain words of the conversation by eating the words and the colour of the created character changing depending on what the mood is. Idea 3 • My Third idea is to have a similar idea as the second one but to use it within a different medium and rather than have it as an animation i would still use the character design and the idea of the character eating the words but i would display this in the form of a storyboard. I think that the idea would work equally as both, in the event i decide i want to do both i could always use the storyboard as layout process for the animation. As well as a storyboard i will experiment with comic strip layouts because in some cases it may work better for the idea.

For the first initial idea that i have come up with it is to design and create a book of different types of conversations, such as within the pages of the small book would be fonts expressing emotion through the typeface with the use of colour aswell but the type will be conveying a conversation throughout the pages. I like the idea of using something such as a facebook inbox layout for the background or something like a text message layout for the iphone or android because i am wanting to relate this project and my ideas through technology within conversation because i think these days technology is a big part of how we converse with each other. Within using this idea for the layout of the book it will give it a more authentic look that people will be familiar with. The assortment of typeface to express emotion should be an interesting thing to work with i think because it will let me develop on not only my type design skills but developing skills within different mediums.

There are many different forms of book that i could choose to experiment with when in that part of the process, i have thought about the different mediums of book and how i would show my workt hrough this idea, I think that something of an interactive book would be a good idea because the way in which i could relate it into conversation i could use pop up speech bubbles or words that pop out of the page to make them stand out more witin the type that i will have in the book. I have collected a few images of books and diaries that i like the look of and that appeal to me in an artistic way, i have to think as to how i would link these ideas in with conversation, the idea of a diary seems to work quite well i thinkbecause a diary is basically a conersation you are having with yourself but in the form of a book, the point of a diary is that you can not only write down the days events but have a conversation with ones self of the days events, i feel that if i made a diary and experimented within ways that i could demonstrate the conversation it would work really well within the project, i could even go as far as to create the actual diary/book and then create an interactive version that moves on after effects, to create stories and the conversation within the diary or book. I came up with this idea from what i learnt in Nicks lecture about himself and how he becamse a graphic Designer, he had done a font book with lots of his own quotes in as a mental note to himself and incorporated them in to a lot of his work

For the layout of the book that i will look in to designing i will be creating something a little bit messier than a normal everyday book layout, i want this book to have conversations in it but my aim is for the book not to have any specific layout i want it to be messy with the different types of font throughout the pages and i want the fonts to express the emotion within the conversations being held, i think for this idea of the conversations i will sit amoungst friends and write down specific things that i think would be good written down as quotes for comversation.

This British born typography artist and designer is extremely talented when it comes to creating attention-grabbing letterforms. He uses an extensive range of media and equipment, generating stunning outcomes and effects. One of his most ambitious pieces is titled ‘You Blow Me Away’ which he collaborated with kinetic still-life photographer Jason Tozer to create. With the type screen printed onto sheets of glass, they fired various objects through them and photographed the scenes at various stages. The results were both unique and incredible. Ward is also well known for his piece titled ‘Bad Typography Is Everywhere’ which highlights in a visually clever way the fact that the world is so full of bad typography that people often don’t notice the good. His work inspires me for this idea because as he has taken his typography and used it in such a way that there are a variety of different types he has craeted and of different sizes to make up and image just like the image of the plate to the right.

The layout of the pages through and through will be my own and will express nothing more than a fun colourful and independent type of creative art within the form of a diary/book. The layout of the book inside would be a lot like the covers of the books i have found because there is no specific layout for the words and no one type that is kept throughout the writing, this is the effect i am looking for. The background fo the page would be something like an online conversation layout, such as facebook inbox, imessage, snapchat or twitter. To keep with the theme of conversation and technoogy.

What type of animation will i do When researching animations i have thought about what sort of animation i could choose from, • There is the plain and simple 2D animation where it is hand-drawn 2D animation or traditional animation. In this technique animators need to make at least 12 drawings on paper for one second length of film. The drawings are later scanned or captured for post-production using computer. This technique was the dominant form of animation in film and TV series, until the development of CGI animation. • In digital 2D animation technique, animation frames are drawn directly on software using mouse or pen tablet. This technique is used mostly for TV series and web animation.

E.g. Pigeon carriers - pigeon drops phone - people adapt to phones and other technology as things evolve more.

My animation idea is that i will have a look at how we converse through medias and within the use of technology, technology has a big impact on how we all converse with each other these days because mobile phones are a big part of peoples lives today. I have taken this idea from everyday uses of text messaging and facebook messaging, the fact that we use emoji’s and emoticons to express our feeling and emotions through conversation in technology.

• Digital 3D animation is one of the sought-after techniques in the current scenario. Using this technique, 3D models are created, textured, rigged, and animated in the virtual space. • In stop-motion animation, one needs to set the character or object, in the desired state or pose against its background to expose a frame, and then do slight modifications in progression and take another frame. The process is repeated until the desired length of animation is achieved and shot.

• Experimental animation has no limitation in terms of techniques or ideas. Animators use their instinct to use materials of their choice to achieve the final animation.

• The traditional storyboard is a series of pencil or ink sketches, which a storyboard artist usually creates under the director’s or producer’s supervision although directors frequently create their own storyboards. Printed on heavy stock paper, filmmakers can display traditional storyboards in sequence on a wall or collected together in a spiral-bound book for convenient reference while on set. Storyboards are as detailed as a filmmaker desires, from plotting every scene of a script to sketching one or two scenes.

• Clay animation is one of the many forms of stop-motion animation. Because of its popularity and the extensive use of clay, usually plasticine, it is recognized as an independent technique and genre. • Cut-out animation is a stop-motion technique for producing animations, using flat characters, props and backgrounds made out of different materials such as paper, card, stiff fabric or even photographs.

• Drawn faster and with far less detail than traditional storyboards, thumbnail sketches are typically small -- literally the size of a thumbnail -- and collected together on a single sheet of paper. Comic book artists most often use thumbnails, drafting panels for each page and doodling action within the panel, thus ensuring smooth story flow. Storyboard artists also use thumbnail sketches to plot traditional storyboards, before drafting more detailed art.

• Paint-on-glass animation is a technique for making animated films by manipulating slow-drying oil paints on sheets of glass. • Drawn-on-film animation is also known as direct animation or animation without camera. Here footage is produced by creating images directly on film stock, as opposed to any other form of animation where the images or objects are photographed frame by frame with an animation camera.

• Advances in computer technology have allowed filmmakers to create animatics -- animated storyboards. In their most basic form, animatics are individual sketches filmed in order to create the sensation of motion and

Some filmmakers will use consumer video cameras to film action figures, toys and models as stand-ins for actors and sets, then edit the footage to create a more dynamic animatic.

Pixar Animators

Adam Phillips is an Australian freelance filmmaker and animator whose online alias is Chluaid (pronounced ‘Clyde’). His main body of animation work, for which he is best known, consists of flash animation compositions published on his website Bitey Castle and on the flash portal Newgrounds, his movies have over 14 million views and he is one of the highest ranked artists. He is the creator of the Brackenwood series. I have decided to do some research on adam because i have loved his simplistic animation work for a very long time, just the simple looking characters that he has designed and there simple back settings within brackenwood forest. Simplistic designs are easier to work with for begginer animators and i think that this is a good example of something that can be eaily designed and drawn.

Pixar is another animation company that inspires me to get a littl ebit more in to depth with my animations, being another film company i have grown up with and still love to watch i love the look of the hcaracters and how the have also changed throught the years as the technology to animate has got better. I am inspired by the fact that disney and pixar have done animations together to create something that everyone especially kids would love to watch, pixar started out experimenting within small animations such as the first generated animation that was called The adventures of Andre and Wally bee continuing the theme of small animations they went of to create things such as Knick Knack then established a common ground for professional designing with disney and made Bugs life and Toy story, In 2000 another small amusing animation was created called For the birds. I love watching from the small and amusing animations to the fully fledged films such as the recent UP and the upcoming films like the good dinosaur.

Walt Disney Animators I am using the walt disney animators as research for a starting point within my idea because i am really interested in walt disneys work and i have grown up with the films, the animation amazes me as to how far the detail and character design has come from the first animation that was created, The character design sheets interest me as to how we can take something as simple as a few poses of a character and turn them into a fully fledged animation. I would love if i could create something as good as these one day,

Steven Langlois - Drawn Ink, Storyboards

I have decided to do a research page on the work of Ryan Woodward and his work within animation and storyboard techniques because looking through his website i have found it very inspiring and i like that fact that all his animations are done in such a simplistic kind of way but they work just as effectivley as if youw ere to draw out a full person for the animation, the movement is really well thought out and works really well, it would be good as a starting point to look in to when first starting out within animation.

I have chosen to have a look at this artist because i find the way he sets out this storyboards to be quite well done and he does it in quite a professional manner such as the graphics and detail within the drawings are quite outstanding and well done. The storyboards themselves are quite wel thought out and really well presented. I could look in to this style of colour design and drawing technique when making mock ups for my story board.

A Conversation and animated storyboards i think it wil be useful to use and go back to within my work process.

Within the storyboard area of my ideas i have become incresingly interested in animated storyboards, i like the style of it and the design. The use of colour within it makes it look a lot more professional and that is something that i will be looking in to when i am going to be designing my own story board.

The few snippet images i have taken from his web page are the favourite of them all that i have selcted because for example the shooting gun one he has taken an actual video of peope shooting the gun looked at the movement of it and how it is processed when the shot is fired then converted it in to an animation just by looking at the deatil of the movement which i feel could help me a lot within this field of work as i am a beginner of animation.

A storyboard is a series of drawings meant for pre-visualizing the shots of a movie. It is an essential tool for the director so he could get a sense of the way the movie is going to look and feel. There are different approaches to storyborading. Some like to use colors, some only draw the outlines, some color in greyscale (my preferred method) and some go really deep into the details.

How to Design the perfect character Think about your audience. Character design aimed at young children, for example, are typically designed around basic shapes and bright colours. If you’re working for a client, the character’s target audience is usually predetermined, as Aussie artist Nathan Jurevicius explains. “Commissioned character designs are usually more restrictive but no less creative. Clients have specific needs but also want me to do my ‘thing’. Usually, I’ll break down the core features and personality. For example, if the eyes are important then I’ll focus the whole design around the face, making this the key feature that stands out.”

A Conversation

Use line qualities and styles to describe your character

Your character design needs to be strong and interesting in a visual sense to get people’s attention.

Give your character personality

The drawn lines of which your character design is composed can go some way to describing it. Thick, even, soft and round lines may suggest an approachable, cute character, whereas sharp, scratchy and uneven lines might point to an uneasy and erratic character.

When devising The Simpsons, Matt Groening knew he had to offer the viewers something different. He reckoned that when viewers were flicking through TV channels and came across the show, the characters’ unusually bright yellow skin colour would grab their attention.

Use exaggerated characteristics Exaggerating the defining features of your character design will help it appear larger than life. Exaggerated features will also help viewers to identif y the character’s key qualities. Exaggeration is key in cartoon caricatures and helps emphasise certain personality traits. If your character is strong, don’t just give it normal-sized bulging arms, soup them up so that they’re five times as big as they should be

Research other designs It can be helpful to try and deconstruct why certain character designs work and why some don’t. There’s no shortage of research material to be found, with illustrated characters appearing everywhere: on TV commercials, cereal boxes, shop signs, stickers on fruit, animations on mobile phones, and more. Study these character designs and think about what makes some successful and what in particular you like about them. Make your character distinctive

A Conversation Interesting looks alone do not necessarily make for a good character design; its personality is key as well. A character’s personality can be revealed through comic strips and animations, where we see how it reacts to certain situations. The personality of your character doesn’t have to be particularly agreeable, but it does need to be interesting (unless your characters is purposely dull). Personality can also be expressed simply in how the character has been drawn.

Choose colours carefully Colours can help communicate a character’s personality. Typically, dark colours such as black, purples and greys depict baddies with malevolent intentions. Light colours such as white, blues, pinks and yellows express innocence, good and purity. Comic-book reds, yellows and blues might go some way to giving hero qualities to a character design.

For my Animation/ Storyboard idea i have decided that i should create my own emoji/ motion sticker character as it will make the work more of my own and this way i can experiment more within the animation part of the course and start to see how characters are drawn out and what angles i could draw them out to get good character design sheets, these were just a few ideas that i came up with.

The second character that i drew out is the red dragon which i really like as the result of a drawing gone wrong, although i really like the character i think i would have to draw him out into a few more poses to see if i could draw him how i wanted him to look within poses and frames as it took me a good three maybe four times to draw him out to how he is now. The bear and the snail character i have automatically decided that they wouldn’t make a very good character for what i am wanting just for the plain fact that in the poses i need they just wouldn’t cut it.

I thought that the more simplistic the character the easier it would be to draw out and to manipulate into different poses for the animation, i have experimented within different animals for characters, different colours, the use of angles and sizes, i have considered that for each frame of the animation or for each image box of the storyboard the character will be in a specific angle and this needs to be in such a way that i can draw it out either by hand or on photoshop into the places they need to be.

I really like the owl character because although it is a simple design that i could draw multiple times i can manipulate the wings. The cat design is a very time consuming one because i struggled with the angles of it so this again would have to be another further experiment.

The elimination process of the characters all depends on which of them i would find easiest to continuously draw as a key frame repeat for the animation or in the angles that i need them to be for the storyboard, my first two initial drawings on the design sheet 1 are the large blue and smal green characters, i drew these and thought that they would be appropriate as they seem easy to manover into deifferent angles with being such a simple shape.

I liked the jellyfish design but again i would have to further experiment within drawing techniques to see if it would work in the frames i want. The little orange jellybean with the top hat is another simple easy manipulatable design which i could use with ease in my idea. The bumblee man i am not all that happy with and i dont think i would consider the use of it within final designs because to me it could of looked like a better character.

I had a go at doing the frame by frame movement with one of the characters that i liked which was the owl character and after it taking quite a long time for me to do the three movements that are shown on this page i realised that to do all the frame by frame movements it would take too much time to experiment doing this with all of the characters that i wanted to experiment with. so i decided not to go ahead with this frame by frame movement idea.

These are a few layout designs that i have come across while doing my research and i feel that from looking at the layouts i have decided the best type of layout would be more of a comic book strip layout with something other than just plain squares to express a story line, i will be experimenting within my own layouts to see what style i prefer of them all, i dont think that i will be needing the type coming out of the box or the type depicting whats happening underneither the image, my images should express what is happening without the use of type telling the story.

A Conversation

The layout of the storyboard is essential that it be right because for the story to make sence the layout of the images needs to be in an order that people will understand when they first see it as a whole image. I feel that a storyboard made of different shapes and not just all squares would definetly make the story seem more interesting.

I looked into the laytouts of facebook messenger on my phone and on a computer to see the layout because i wanted something simple like the facebook layout and i experiemtned with two ways of doing the idea and i came to the conclusion that the comic strip way of creating it wouldnt work very well for what i am wanting to show as there would be too many boxes and frames to show what i wanted to show just as a comic strip.

A Conversation

After this i thought what if i did it just like it is on a phone and have a simple portrait rectangle having the messages on but again trying to capture the movement of the emoji through still image was a little bit difficult for me so i have decided again to change the idea and create a short animation to represent conversation through technology still using the idea of the portrait rectangle.

Even though i have changed my idea i have still used one of my original character designs so that i will have my own emoji in the animation.

A Conversation

After looking at all the different emojis that i could use and choosing the one on the page to left i had to then experiment a little bit with the layout of the messenger app i was going to use so i based mine on the simple mobile phone facebook messenger and played around with the colours of the background and the text boxes, i couldnt experiment with too many colours because of the emojis that i have designed and witht hem having quite bright colours i didnt want the background to over power the colour emoji’s as the emoji is going to be the main attraction within the animation.

I have experimented with the look of the emoji character and how i could make his look change to express emotion as the conversation is beiong held through social messenger. I have used the basic emotions such as happiness, anger, sadness and neutral feelings, i have changed the facial expression and the colour of the emoji.

A Conversation

I came up with choosing the largest image on the page as my chosen background messenger idea. I have chosen this one because the colours of the background are quite light and plain which i think work because i didnt want anything too bright that would interefer with the animation. I also tried a gradient at the top with the name of the person in the messenger and decided that a gradient doesnt work very well and it doesnt look like something that would be realistic on a messenger app. From here onwards now that i have all the materials i need i am going to start with the animation process and document my processes and stages throughout.

This is the final of the idea that i had and decided to go ahead with, after getting into the project and the kind of losing what it was that i wanted to do i slowly got there in the end and got a little bit fed up with all the issues that i had creating the after effectsa with this being the first animation that i have created since i have been on the course and i feel that even though i struggled a lot with making the animation i feel that i did alright even though i am not fully happy with it. I feel that if i could of made created it a little bit better with more experience at animating then i might of been happier with the final outcome. https://vimeo.com/155019309 This is the link to the final animation that i have posted on vimeo.
