An Introduction to Collide The project Collide will be for us to develop and demonstrate integrated design methodologies in order for us to work professionally create work in a commercial environment.

We are required to work within our creative and intellectual skill points while exploring our own self progression that demonstrates the abilities and independence i have while creating design work that targets the technical requirements of design for a creative industry.

In this project we will incorporate a range of professional requirements that involve personal and project management as well as detailed research, creativity and originality, as well a high level of technical expertise and portfolio promotion.

The aim of this project will be to have physical and a digital outcome in response to the three themes which are Happiness, the Internet and the digital age and your future self.

Introduction To Collide

What is Happiness ?

Happiness is a state of being happy or a state of satisfaction but happiness can also mean different things toward different people and what they want out of life determines what they would call happiness in life.

Happiness depends on everybody as an individual and can sometimes be brought on by life experiences, thrills, life goals and achievements.

The “pursuit of happiness� is something this country is based on, and different people feel happiness for different reasons. Whenever doing something causes happiness, people usually want to do more of it. No one ever complained about feeling too much happiness.

What is Happiness to me ?

Happiness to me specifically is taking my time to make other people smile. A smile is worth a thousand words and when i can make people smile that is what i find the happiest thing that i could use my time doing.

I researched what different people of the Internet think makes them happy on a daily basis and found a website that is fully dedicated to what makes people happy in life and this is what i found in the research.

I have found that with the wide array of happiness opinions there isn’t a specific one for any one person, we all have our own version of life happiness and that is something i would like to take in to consideration throughout this project.

Should we embrace life within a technological society ?

I think that as we have succumb each year as technology has advanced because we don’t want to be left in the dark ages when it comes to jobs using a lot of the technology as it advances and in some cases i feel that if we don’t adapt with technology we will be left behind.

Losing out on job opportunities because we aren’t advanced enough to keep up with everything.

The Internet is here to stay. It’s been well over a decade now that ‘average users’ have had access to the Internet, and we’re now knee deep in the Social Media revolution that has defined Web 2.0.

It isn’t going away. It isn’t a fad. It’s only going to grow and evolve. It’s already woven into the fabric of the daily lives of millions of people. Yes, a lot of folks are wasting a lot of time doing things on the Internet that don’t contribute to society or offer much in the way of personal growth, but at the same time, there are countless ways in which the multitude of tools and technologies available on the Internet are being used in wonderfully constructive ways.

Everybody uses the Internet in this day and age, the majority use it on a daily basis with the help of on the go communications like mobile phones, tablets and laptops for social media sitings such as facebook, twitter and snapchat.

Companies all over the world use the Internet and to a lot of people around the world we would be lost without the technology that we have now come accustomed to.

It has now become the norm to have even children around the ages of 3-5 using Internet devices and games for learning.

The Internet is not something that will be going away anytime soon, even the elderly generation are starting to warm to the idea of all this technology around today.

The Internet is such a widely known thing its taking over how we go about day to day life, some people cant leave their own house without at least two electronic devices.

Human physical communications have been effected widely as people don’t take the time to have a person to person conversation anymore because everything is digital.

In my researching i came across an article that explains peoples theories as to what some technology such as cars will be like in around thirty years or so.

The robotics expert: No flying cars, but drones will be everywhere :University of Queensland robotics researcher Dr Paul Pounds says the next 30 years will see drones become part of our everyday lives.

“They’re going to be so ubiquitous we’ll wonder how we ever got by about them. They’ll be like mobile phones in that respect,” he said.

“It’s going to seep into our lives in ways that we won’t quite expect but will seem very obvious in retrospect.”

Dr Pounds predicts drones will be used heavily by organizations such as emergency services, traffic monitors and surf lifesavers. “[Drones] flying across the city doing municipal firstresponder types of things — if there’s a car crash they can fly over and see if it’s on fire before police and fire crews respond,” he said.

Technology writer and commentator Stilgherrian said the ability for developers to connect data with software would have the biggest impact on our daily lives.

Driverless vehicles will be everywhere, he said, but they won’t just drive themselves — they’ll use data to anticipate people’s needs.

10 years from now what will i be doing or what do i hope to be doing ?

I think that as of now my future self could lead to anything because i am not sure which design path i would like to lead down, i have so many interest and so many job aspirations that i could aim for but the choices just keep going and i think as far as life style in ten years i hope to have really found my ideal job of the many i would like to do right now and have ideally a nice home even possibly move away.

Many people in ten years will be thinking about having a family or may possibly even have a family already by that time but for me i feel that there are so many more things i want to do before i even think about that idea as of yet, there are so many things that a wandering mind like mine can explore and continuously learn down every route or path i might possibly take.

> My first initial idea would be to demonstrate future self by making a time lapse of photos.

I would take a photo of myself everyday at the same time of the day for a few weeks/ month and document this to show any signs of aging, hair colour change, any changes facially and eventually create a stop motion of these photos.

> My second idea is for future self and would be to create a walk cycle animation based on a minecraft type theme of animating and show the animated character which would be me in digital cubed form walking a continuous cycle on the screen as the world advances the character will change ever so slightly over time, buildings will scroll upwards on the cycle and things will change every few seconds through the cycle.

> My third idea again in the cubic style of minecraft would be to physically create a world of my own out of coloured cubes to create a stop motion animation but also have a physical world created by the end of the process.

> My fourth idea is for happiness and future self, the idea is that my idea of happiness is tattoos because i love the look of them and they make me who i am, every year i get more and more and its sort of a self development path towards myself.

I think a good way of showing this would be to create a mannequin with different styles colours and types of tattoos and create photographic imagery each time the mannequin has a new tattoo added.

> My sixth idea is to show memories through a similar way as idea 4 with the use of some sort of bodily figure either physical in the means of a mannequin again or digitally and show memories through the use of everyday scars for example burns on your hand from a happy family barbecue where you laughed at the dog in the pool and burnt your hand by accident.

I think using scars to show happy memories is a unique in depth way of creatively demonstrating happiness because it is something that not everybody would see as related to happiness but scars have happy memories also.

> My seventh idea is to again use a poster sequence for an animation to show family and the life of a family, i would show this again in a cartoonistic style, illustrating the characters and developing them as time goes on through the process.

> My final eighth idea is for future self and happiness and the aim of this idea is to use words that i feel describe my happiness and what makes me happy to create a word cloud of such that will be of my face or how i think i will look in ten years time. For the physical part of the brief i will take some of the words from inside the word cloud image and physically create them using items that make me happy. Like we did for Nicks physical studio.

From here on i will look further into three of the ideas i have generated and explain why i like them and why i think they would work as ideas for the project.

What is my idea ?

The first idea that i have decided to look in to a little bit more is the two minecraft ones and to combine the two so that the end product of the brief i would have a digital outcome and a physical one both relevant to the idea. I feel that i like both of the ideas as much as each other so combining them will give me a better outcome for the brief.

The idea will be based on the idea of a minecraft world but i will create it in my own image, the style alone with the use of cubes is the only thing that realistically i will relate to minecraft.

I am hoping my end product after much development will be some sort of animation either stop motion or digital and the model of the world.

I am excited to start the experimentations because its physical work and character creation which i enjoy doing the most.

Future Self Idea

What is minecraft ?

Minecraft is a 2011 sandbox video game originally created by Swedish programmer Markus “Notch�

Person and later developed and published by Mojang.

The creative and building aspects of Minecraft enable players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Other activities in the game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat.

Why do i think this idea will work?

I think that this idea will work effectively for my collide project because It is a mix up of Future self and the Internet. I feel using two of the given three themes i am working towards the brief effectively.

These are some of the research images that i have collected to help me get a feel for what the world i create would look like and to demonstrate the pixel effect that i will need to add to the characters and the land to create a minecraft style animation.

I feel that the character and the animation would be fairly easy to create due to them being just blocks but i think with my characters if i design them i might create them with a little bit more movement than the original minecraft cube character.

What will i change from the existing minecraft ?

My idea is to create a minecraft type world so the only real thing that will be minecraft about it is the cubic look of the world other than that i will create my own characters and colour scheme for the world.

For this idea i decide to take to cinema 4D and try to recreate some of the things from the minecraft game that i might consider to use in my animation.

I have created some of the characters from the game to give me a feel for getting used to the programme and exploring within different texture and materials that i could use within the character that i will create.

I create a tree and a building also as they will be things that i want to have in the animation.

I am happy with these rough experiments i feel if i was to create these with more detail for the animation they will look a lot better and i would be able to manipulate them easier.

My next step of expeimentation is to try and create the experimenatations in a 2D manner by using illustrator or hand drawing what i want for this idea.

Experiments

For the experimentation side of my idea i decided that i wanted to look in to how i could create my own characters that will look similar to the minecraft characters, but i want to make them more of my own.

I have tried drawing out some rough designs of how i think they might look and then i have taken it further from just the cinema 4D designs and i have tried to make them in Illustrator as a flat 2D image.

I also tried drawing them out 3D and i decided that i wasn’t happy with the outcome of this so decided to keep it digital as if i am to create this animation i would be creating this digitally anyway.

I have concluded that if i am to continue on with this idea my character might possibly look better in a 2D manner than 3D just because of the shape and design of the characters withthem being cubed

What is my idea ?

The second idea that i would like to experiment with is the idea to create a series of posters showing an animation sequence of the world. I would like to experiment with this idea further because i feel it will be interesting and something i could enjoy creating also having a digital and physical outcome to the idea aswell this idea fits well with the internet and the future theme.

The end product i wish to achieve would be to have a series of simplistic posters in a classic cartoon style that will demonstrate the evolution of the internet and the world.

What is happening to the world?

Climate change sceptics, who passionately and consistently argue that man’s influence on our climate is overstated, say they saw it coming.

They argue that there are natural cycles, over which we have no control, that dictate how warm the planet is. But what is the evidence for this?

During the last few decades of the 20th Century, our planet did warm quickly.

Sceptics argue that the warming we observed was down to the energy from the Sun increasing. After all 98% of the Earth’s warmth comes from the Sun. But research conducted two years ago, and published by the Royal Society, seemed to rule out solar influences.

What will the world be like in ten years ?

The Internet of Everything describes the networked connections between devices, people, processes and data. By 2025, the IoE will exceed 100 billion connected devices, each with a dozen or more sensors collecting data. This will lead to a trillionsensor economy driving a data revolution beyond our imagination. Cisco’s recent report estimates the IoE will generate $19 trillion of newly created value.

The screen as we know it — on your phone, your computer and your TV — will disappear and be replaced by eyewear. Not the geeky Google Glass, but stylish equivalents to what the well-dressed fashionistas are wearing today. The result will be a massive disruption in a number of industries ranging from consumer retail, to real estate, education, travel, entertainment, and the fundamental ways we operate as humans.

These are a few of the experimentations that i have started creating using illustrator, i have drawn out a rough plan of what i think the poster set out would look like so i know what images it is that i would be creating.

I have gone with a quite cartoonistic style because i feel the type of story i will be telling with the posters will look better in this art style due to it being a poster set animation.

I carried on further in the experimentation of these cartoonistic styled posters and had a go at creating the scenes that i would use for the actual posters themselves to see if the idea grew on me a little bit more and as to whether it might draw me in to continuing with the experimentation of this idea.

I have enjoyed creating the images for this idea because i idolise the stylings of cartoons with the colour and feel to them.

I created most of these on Illustrator and a few on cinema 4D to see how it may look in a realistic way and i have discovered that i prefer the look of the posters in there own retro cartoonistic style.

I like the way i have created the style with these images because it was a hppy mistake by letting one of the outlines be smaller than the colour and that is what i have used throughout the whole image and i feel it looks really good for the style i am trying to create.

What is my idea ?

The third idea is the final idea i came up with and for this i would like to look into future self and happiness as a combination and to create the word cloud of a what i would think my future self would look like.

I like this idea because i feel that i can experiment a lot with it in the physical and digital department. I feel it wil be an enjoyable idea to develop and work within.

The final outcome to this idea is that i am hoping to have some word cloud images of my future self either as a realistic image or animated cartoon like image i could possibly go into further detail and have three final images that would all be word cloud images one of me as a child and what made me happy as a child one of me now and what makes me happy and one of what i think i will look like in ten years time and what i think will make me happy. my physical outcome to the brief will be the images printed out and the physically made words.

What is a word cloud ?

Word clouds or tag clouds are graphical representations of word frequency that give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in a source text. The larger the word in the visual the more common the word was in the document(s).

This type of visualization can assist evaluators with exploratory textual analysis by identifying words that frequently appear in a set of interviews, documents, or other text. It can also be used for communicating the most salient points or themes in the reporting stage.

A variety of word and tag cloud generators are freely available on the internet and the process for creating them is straightforward. Evaluators can simply import text (for example, a set of interviews) into a text box and the tool creates a graphical representation of the words. Most word cloud generators have features that allow users to change colors, font, and exclude common or similar words.

Throughout the experimentations i have done within this idea i have enjoyed trying new things and experimenting within type. Type has never been something that i have been fond of but in this idea combining type, words with image seems to work really well and there are so many way i can create the image i am looking for with the idea it self.

The idea is to create 3 images of myself with the use of words for my digital theme and i have played around with two types of photographs one from when i was a child and one from now to see what effects i can get using different word cloud techniques. So far i do have my favourites but i would like to experiment further with a few that i like.

The idea of rather than just a photograph of myself i could create myself in a stylistic cartoon way and try the typeface idea that way but i struggled with this experiment and i think this might be one of the styles i will experiment with further possibly trying it hand drawn.

I also tried the same tecniques as the page above but kept the photographs colour and detail so that the words are just shading and highlitings over the lighter opacity of the image.

I kept in mind the cartoon idea aswell for a few of these experiments and decided to freehand some rough cartoon characters to get a feel for creating a character just from text and i think this is again something i will continue to experiment with because i like the way it has come out when i have drawn it freehand i feel if i was to try it on illustrator it might look neater.

After much experimentation within my three ideas i have decided that the one i want to choose to develop further is going to be the word cloud typography idea that demonstrates happiness and future self from the three themes we were given for this brief.

I have chosen this idea because i have found that there are so many ways i can create word cloud images and i can create them with not only photographs but images i have made myself like the cartoon version of myself and i feel that it gives me a wider variation of things to experiment with so that i get a proper feel towards the idea.

I have enjoyed experimenting with certain mediums more than others which always is the case but i feel with a little bit more development and creativity i can create the word cloud images that i want to look effective and work the way they are intended to demonstrate happiness and future self.

My plan is to create three individual word cloud images one of me as a child, one of me now and then one of what i will be like in ten years time and to incorporate happiness within these images i will be creating the images from words that made/ make and will make me happy. For instance what made me happy as a child ? Toys, friends that sort of thing and these will be the words in the first image.

The second image will be made up of words that make me happy now for example Family, Friends, Love and for the final ten years time image i will create the image up of words i feel will make me happy in ten years time such as Children, Family, business.

so my digital outcome for this idea will be to have three wordcloud images of myself made up from the words that made / make me happy at the time.

I will look into different fonts and experiment further with them so that i can create something i feel will look good with that use of type as a lot of this idea is typography based it is a very important part to the process.

For the physical outcome of this idea i have decided to incorporate something like the type work that we did in studio with nick and as this idea is type based i will be choosing one special word from each of the finished digital outcomes and creating them physically out of everyday items such as if my word for the child was toy i could make the word toy from different toys and develop these physical type ideas until i am happy with the outcome then finalise the three physical type objects.

I feel this idea will work best for me because it will help me get to grips further with typography, something i have never been a big fan of working with so i think this idea will help me find the fun in working with type and also show a good demponstration of happiniess and future self combined.

Why i chose this style ?

After a while of looking at all the different experimentations that i have done in this idea it was hard for me to actually choose a style i prefered more than the others.

But after a while of looking at them and thinking about what simple things i could change to make them look better i have finally decided that i am going to choose this style of them all because i feel that it is the most effctive.

The words in the face are easily seen which is what i wanted and i feel the colours within the image work well creating the facial structure.

I will work on the eyes a little bit more as they didn’t turn out fully how i wanted them to look due to the background colour.

I chose black as a background colour for the image because it made the image stand out more than it did on a white background.

Collection of words

After choosing my style and re creating it i have decided that i am happy enough with these to be able to call them my finals, i was going to try it with different font styles but as i have tried each experiment with a different font and i have found that they all look the same in the end anyway due to the text being warped so i found that it would of been a waste of time really so i didn’t bother.

With these images i changed the style slightly to give it a better effect than the original, i changed the size of the words i have been putting in the image from the original because i feel it makes the image look more detailed and with word cloud work a lot of importance is involved with the detail and colours within the image.

I am happy with the end results of my word cloud work and i can say i am pleased with how my first every word cloud work looks.

What is physical type art ?

Physical type art is an art style where typography, fonts and just words in general are created from everyday objects like some of the images i have gathered within these few pages, you can make words out of almost anything and each one looks different depending on what it is made of.

Why did i decide to make physical word art for this project ?

I decided to create physical word art in this project because we experimented with it in studio sessions over the past couple of months and i got really interested in it and found that i can create a lot of really interesting looking things, not even specifically in an existing typeface but just in general they look interesting and different which is what i like my work to be, i like my work to be different and to stand out from what everyone else typically does within graphic design.

I think the images that stand out to me the most within the four pages of research i have collected would be the more colourful ones because i am drawn to colour although things dont hae to be colourful to be interesting i just feel that for me personally the ones i find the most interesting that will have an impact on my own experiments will be the ones that are created of unusual objects such as the wax letter and the one made of matchsticks because they arent something i would of thought myself to use and i feel that they might have an impact on what i decide to create for my physical.

What are my opinions on the type experiments i have done ?

I feel that the experiments i have done for my physical type piece turned out really well, i really enjoyed doing the experiments, i think that my favorite experimentation would have to be the wax carving ones because it was a challenge for me and something iv not done before it was just a shame that after a while of carving the wax broke and i struggled to melt it back together.

I feel if it hadn’t of snapped i would of definitely used it for the collide exhibition.

The play dough experiments i enjoyed doing as well because it brought me back to my childhood and it kept with the theme that i wanted for this project by creating words that made me happy as a child out of the things that made me happy and play dough was definitely one of them.

From working in Nicks studio session creating type from objects i decided that the jelly beans one would of been a really good experimentation because it is colorful and relates to me as a child. It is definitely another one that i enjoyed creating.

Another of my main favorites is the images to the left of this text, staying similar to what i created for nicks studio session i thought that if i kept with the wax theme as well because i enjoyed the first wax experiment so much i would try melting the wax to create a colorful type. I am happy with the end results of my experimentation with type and i feel from these i will have no problem choosing my final physical pieces to use for the collide exhibition.

After much experimentation in this project i have come to an end result that i am pleased with, i feel that the digital pieces although they took me a while to complete they were worth the time because they are quite detailed and that is the effect i wanted from these images. As for my physicals i feel that The end result of them i am pleased with and i enjoyed doing the experiments into getting my finals because it was physical work and it balanced how much digital work i needed to do which helped a lot.

I feel if i was to do this project again i might of done the animated posters idea because although i have enjoyed my word cloud imagery i feel that this past couple of months i have really got into illustration and it would of been nice to do a project based on my illustrations.
