Pilgrimage in Jakarta
http://thecityfix.com In the last year almost 30 million people in Jakarta participated in a massive migration for ramadan, this takes place every single year and causes alot of issues with urban mobility about the streets aswell as alot of saftey issues. Alot of travelling people and famililes fall to perish from the busy movement on the roads of Jakarta. The transport and development institution have made vast repairs to the roads due to the mass movement throughtout each year. My opinions on the great migration of jakarta is that the amount of transportation and movement that occurs on the roads each year for ramadan has caused means of destruction within the small inner city which makes the roads ware down and cause problems throughout the year for people that reside there to freely enter and vacate the premises, these problems cause things other than ware and tear of the roads it causes deaths of the locals which in my opinion can cause more problems within the small city.

Latino new Urbanism
http://thecityfix.com Alot of the American southwest is populated by endless suburbs and neighbourhoods which is kept busy by the migration of people throughtout short periods of time. The fast flow of people has caused concern for more need of development which will cause alot of issues like crowded neighbourhoods. Alot like the migration of jakarta my opinions of the migration in the southwest of America are that due to the amount of people entering the city aswell as a few people leaving its caused the governement to bulid new properties around the small city and this is turning the urban life style into a more modern one, which to me could mean a good thing because it will make the city more of a place for tourist attraction which will bring more money into the city helping development and to modernise things for people. I think this will be useful for the peole living in the city.

Rochdale
For years now Rochdale has been in a constant state of flux due to mass development taking place in the town centre. In the past years Rocdales historical buildings and sites have been torn down to make way for newer upto date structures such as the large metrolink that has been placed where the old bus station used to be and this carries on up onto Drake street and further on towards Oldham. The development of the Hopwood Hall College took place last year turning it into a more appealing place for eductaion. The Rochdale sixth form has also been built adding to the movement of people int he area. The plans of bringing back the medieval historic bridge to create an attractive enviroment in the heart of the centre. The population of Rochdale has 6,000 in roughly 10 years. I think that the development occuring in rochdale is a good thing in some ways but also it is an inconvenience to the people that live around the area because the development is causing traffic problems.
Abandoned Places
City In Flux
Berlin is a city in a state of flux with its urban landscape and unique history due to the destruction of the cold war, a lot of Berlin is wastelands where houses were bombed and streets became uninhabitable as a result traces from the past can be found everywhere, many of the old buildings and deserted spaces have been saved from disrepair. Although this will be leading to a further developments. In the future to ensure a steady flow of people and usage of space throughout Berlin. I have decided to research abandoned places because it has always been an interest to me with how the city changes as its unkept and how buildings crumble and decay without the aid of people to keep on top of everything. i believe it will make for interesting developments and ideas throughout the project. My thoughts on this idea is that i could make something really interesting to do with abandonment. I chose to research berlin because within berlin there are many abandoned places where tragedy has happened.

Kowloon walled city
The kowloon walled city was a vastly populated place and had a constant state of flux due to the population of 33,000 residents living within the walls of the city. The city was well known for mass drug trafficking and prostitution. They built the city upwards instead of outwards making it a secure place for the containment of drugs. Throughout 1987 to 1993 the chinese government ordered for the city to be evacuated due to its poor sanitary conditions leaving the flux of it to be a stand still, In 1994 the city was demolished due to the lack of urban living and has now been transformed into a park, still under the name of the kowloon walled city.

Bodie, California
Bodie is a small mining town that was in a state of flux. The town started out as homing for the miners that worked there and then became filled with families, store owners, miners, prostitutes and much more. This homely town began to flourish within riches and opened up saloons, brothels, opium-dens and gambling halls to attract the entertainment this small town desired so much. But a state of decline started to occur within a matter of years, where the miners got offered promising mining roles in other places, leaving Bodie as a family friendly establishment. development then happened of a methodist and roman catholic church. I have chosen Bodie as part of my research because im really interested in the way that everything is left how it was when they left to rot and decay.

Australia, wittenoom
Wittenoom is now a ghost town due to the major mining of blue aspestos in the 1950’s. The area was mainly just a use for mining until a company town was built to help house families. Wittenoom was the only supplier of blue aspestos in Australia but sadly after a long period of time the aspestos started to cause health issues with the people throughtout the town and had to be evacuated because of concern from the Australian government. The health risks got so high that they took the town off the map and closed all possible routes of entry into it, even today the town stands silent. Why i have chosen to research this abandoned city, is that i am interested in the way that it has been left because of health purposes, something as simple as asbestos can cause so many problems within the health of people who are near it and it interests me that a city can just be left to decay.
Chernobyl
City In Flux The incident that happened in chernobyl occured in 1986 as a flwaed reactor design was operated by untrained personnel and the result of this was the release of radioactive steam and smoke from the fires, a lot of people living in chernobyl at the time died due to acute radiation poisoning. The radiation in the air carried and caused problems in not only chernobyl but it affected large areas of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. The chernobyl disaster is the only one in history to have had radiation fatalities. All the reactors that are on the chernobyl site have been shut down so no further radiation if there was to be any can be avoided. A lot of chernobyl is still uninhabitable and is said to still be having radiation problems 20,000 years from now, Chernobyl can be toured by people today but only for short periods of time as the fear of radiation poisoning is still an issue among people. Certain areas with low raditation can be toured but the recators radiation levels are too high for people to enter the plant.

Pompeii started out as very popular city to live in due to a good transport system and a source of very fertile volcanic soil. On the 5th February, AD^ an earthquake hit naples and destroyed nearly every building in the proceeding, it was an earthequake rather than a volcanic eruption because the gases built up inside and wee unable to escape. Some people left the area after the earthquake but a lot of them chose to stay. On the morning of August 24, AD79 the people of pompeii heard a massive explosion as the steam built up from hundereds of years caused vesuvius to erupt violently throwing debris and ash into the air blocking out the majority of the sunlight. All of the houses in the path of the volcano got destroyed. The combination of volcanic ash, earth and rain created an avalanche of hot mud, most of the people managed to get away before the whole town was covered. Because of the mass poisonous fumes coming from vesuvius and the hot mud the town was bandoned. After th eissue has settled archeologists found hollowed out places in the ash were the bodies of people who coulsnt escape had rotted away. Plaster was poured into the cavities where the body was to create moulds of people in positions of fear and horror as they died. Today the site of the incident can be visited and the moulds of people can be seen for historic rememberance. Where as Chernobyl was made abandoned by human resources pompeii has been abandoned because of natural causes. I think what happened to the people that lived here was a great tragedy but also a very interesting event in history which is the reason as to why i have used it in my research stage.

Auschwitz
City In Flux Auschwitz was a town in the southern parts of poland near Krakow and its original use was a detention centre for prisoners. It soon turned into a camp where enemies of the nazis were exterminated or used for slave labour. Some of the prisoners were also used for medical experiments. Auschwitz was located on a former military base and during the construction of the concerntration camp all the people living nearby were evacuated from the area and their homes got bulldozed by the nazis. In the 1940’s the soviet army entered Krakow and the germans ordered that Auschwitz be abandoned. The nazis started destroying all evidence of the tragic occurances that took place, when the soviet army entered the camp they found thousands of injured and dead prisoners that had been left behind. I have also chosen Auschwitz to research because i find it intriguing as to why the tragedys that happened there actualy happened and what made them occur.

City In Flux Centralia is an ‘abandoned’ town in American,Pensylvania. It is known as the real life ‘silent hill’ from Roger Averys famous horror film. Although it is classed to a lot as an abandoned town, there are 7 people that dare to reside there. The town mined the longest burning coal in the world and thrived from this but in the 1960’s tragedy happened leaving the town empty and unkept. A fire began in the trash pits of the mine and spread throughout beneith the town causing smoke rise form the cracks in the tarmac and road. To this day the fires beneither Centralia stil burn. The road that leads into Centralia has been worn down a lot due to people visiting the famous town to experience the real silent hill. The fire beneith the town has been continuously burning for over 40 years, several attemots have been made to put out the fire but none have been successful.

City In Flux Silent Hill is a fictional town based on the real town of Centralia, a lot of the buildings used in the film are re-designed and based around the real ones, the film is about the town having a fire continuously burning beneith it but in the case of the real town theres an actual fire below it. Where as silent hill is believed to be abandoned in the film this is not the case in Centralia as 7 people still reside there. only a few know it to be empty.

Chernobyl Idea 2 This is number two of my three ideas and the concept of this idea is people that were there once but arnt anymore in person there ghost/spirit still existst in the place where it was before it perished. The idea is to take images or photographs of a place that has been abandoned by people and use the image adding photoshopped people changing the opacity to make them look more ghostly like. I think this idea is good because it has a deep meaning to it. I also think it has a strong impact on people that once lived there aswell as people who havnt because it ets people see tragedies that have happened somewhere some people might not have been.
City In Flux
Chernobyl idea 2
This is the process in which i have made this idea possible using for the first rough idea an image that i took from my brothers army pass out parade and used two of the soldiers within the photograph and was able to use them on an image i had found of chenobyl by cutting out the soldiers i have been able to pull them from their original image and change the opacity of which they are viewed so that it gives it a sort of ghoslty effect. i added the ghoistly figures into the image of chernobyl and reduced the size of them to make them fit in with the reactor four in the image of chernobyl. This idea makes me think that its about things that were there and have perished for any reason but they are still remembered by people and the fact that they are remembered will live on in the place where they had perished. as many people died within chernobyl due to the radiation which i think is a very sad occuramce but this idea makes it that people can be remembered and live on as they did within chernobyl.

Empty spaces idea 3 This is another rough image i created for the empty spaces idea, something that has been there and has been demolished into nothingness. I think this is another idea with a strong message behind it that being thast the impact of desruction and reconstruction of demolition sites happens all over the world in different countries and in certain situations these demolition sites can be made from what could of been someones home therefore causing devostation within some families. This meaning that what once there being a family home or building has been demolished into rubble piles or empty spaces.

Andy Goldsworthy My first artist to research would have to be Andy Goldsworthy, he doesn’t have a lot of art based on the city but the direction i am going is the take over of nature and wildlife when a city is abandoned and unkept. I like how nature grows into buildings and objects. His work interests me and intreges me as to how he can create some beautiful things with the use of everyday nature that is around us. The nature into abandonedand unkept cities is something id like to explore and, experiment and maybe use in this project. Andy Goldsworthy is a British artist who collaborates alot of nature to make his artistic creations. He takes photographs of each piece of artwork he creates when hes finished it. In Andy Goldsworthy’s own words “he enjoys the freedom of creating art with his own hands”.

Walter Mason Walter Mason is a land artist from Germany, his work is very much like Andy Goldsworthy. Again his art isnt cuty based but it shows the differences between seasons using nature and what ever comes with the seasons, such as snow, brightly coloured leaves and flowers and also the use of water and ice. His art work interests me and makes me think more into depth about how nature has a mind of its own and how the weather changes and seasons affect how nature grows and behaves when left to do its own natural thing. I could use this in a Graphic Design sence and incorporate the change of nature into citys and things change over time into a development of their own thing.

I have decided to use him in research because i feel it gives me ideas of work i could do on a bigger scale and he inspires me in a way that i know i could create a really interesting art piece or Graphic design in a simple way.

Sylvain Meyer I like Sylvain Meyers work because he uses contrasts of colour to make the natural landscape stand out against its background. He uses organic materials to add an artistic fell to the landscape. I think its a very clever, colourful and enviromentally friendly way of creating art on a landscape without causing damage to any nature. It shows how simple it can be to make really nice pieces of art in simply constructed ways.

Photography experiment editing This first one is just a simple three photo process stage of how and what i have changed from the original image to the end image. I started with a plain photograph i took around Rochdale and then from the nature photographs i had taken, iv cut selected bits from the photo’s and added them into this one to change this boring photo into and interesting partially overgrown area. I like changing the photo’s because it shows the change in stages of what could happen in a few years if and area is left unmanned and unkept.
These bottom two are more experiments with photographs using the same process as i did for the top three but there is already a partial bit of nature in it. i like these experiments because i think they are effective and work well with the message i may percieve to get across with this project.
City In Flux
Photography experiment editing
This experiment is my favourite work on photoshop because it looks alot better than the other ones iv done, although iv used the same method of cutting and pasting imagery from the nature photographs i took around Rochdale. taking snippets of trees, leaves and adding them into the image, changing the opacity and using a leaf shaped burn tool allowed me to give the image a more natural look rather than just use the leaf and grass images that come with the pen tool. This gives me the idea that i could create a poster or something related to that to show how unkept areas get taken over and this could be a metaphor for something else.
City In Flux
Stop Motion
For this idea/experiment i thought to do a sort of stop motion growth thing and took photos of each stage so it shows in imagery that the nature is growing up the wall.
City In Flux
Stop Motion
I like this idea and i think the stop motion video also come out quite well, im just not sure how i could develop it further other than do it on a larger scale and maybe using something a bit more substantial than just some paper, paints and my wall. Although i think it went alright for a first try at a small stop motion.

Favourite ideas, Rough
4, Cartoon type image with black growth on the top image, grey reflect image with nature.
1, Skyline refelctive image with the growth on the top image, Bottom image as a normal reflection of what the place looked like before growth took over
For this idea i am going to experiment with different medias such as photoshop and different materials so i have a variety to choose from when developing.
2, Opposite Growth taking over the background rather than the skyline
A3 poster?
I think with abit more development the idea could look professional and will help me to decide better when i choose final designs.
3, Over taking growth growing over the background buildings creeping up on the front buildings of the skyline.
City In Flux
Favourite ideas, Rough 1, Nature growing as intended.
This idea is sort of an opposite to the first idea, were as the first idea is nature overgrowing and taking over the city, this one is were worldwide construction and development take over citys and destroy the mass majority of nature that surrounds citys.
2, Reflection of just the city as its taken over.
A3 poster?
3, Half nature and half rubble of trees that have been knocked down, end development leading to the refelction of just a city.
City In Flux
This was the first design done properly on photoshop. As the top is the skyline image and the bottom is the refelction. I do like but although being simple it needs more development to possibly make it look better.
Idea 1, Development
Im not so keen on this one, the shadowing of the reflection i like but the colours dont work all that well together.
City In Flux
Again i tried with the colours in the skyline and didnt like the outcome. The amount of colours takes away the concerntration of the growth on the image and as important as the skyline is in the image the growth/nature is also a very important part to be noticed within the image.
Idea 1, Development
The colours didnt work so i thought id try a blue and white reflective background to see what the outcome would be but although its better than all the colours i still dont like the image in colour because to me it stands out too much and theres too much to look at.
City In Flux
This is one development that i do like, i like the way that the dots are only allocated to the inside of the cityscape and the outline is bolder making the image stand out more. The only flaw is that the growth doesnt stand out against the dots.
Idea 1, Development
This is one of my favourites because its so simple but such a good image as the cityscape and growth both stand out but neither stand out more than the other its a well balanced image with an effective reflection.
City In Flux
Idea 1, Development This was an experiment with two things, one being the placement of the nature as its now behind. I do like this idea i think it looks really nice on the plain black cityscape. I also tried three different types of green to give off a more colourful effect but one that blends with the image effect rather than something that stands out more than the other.
I liked the three colours idea so i thought id try it with a brown as well as the greens together. i also tried it on the reflected image to see how it looked and im quite pleased with how it looks.
For this one i thought id change the background rather than the skyline itself to see what the outcome was and again i like this one mainly because of the reflection in the bottom half of the cityscape.
City In Flux
For this im trying to get the message of nature just doing what it does and growing and then in the refelction part it shows buildingd but no nature. Meaning if development continues the way it is doing we are going to lose all the nature to construction.I like it but i think just looking at the image without any text or explination it comes across as feeling like its more about the overgrowth of nature so i need to think and develop it more if i can do so.
Idea 2, Development
I this experiment i decided that i could explain my idea abit better with the use of three images rather than just one. The first image is just of nature and then of construction over the nature but still with some left to grow. The third one is just a city scape due to the development of construction taking over nature and killing off the trees. This imagery could work quite well as and A3 poster i think.
City In Flux
Idea 2, Development
For these experiments iv tried a different approach to make them look more like the trees are dying off because of the buildings. I still think i need to try different experiments for it though to find a better outcome to the image.
City In Flux
This is another develop of the other two. In this one iv made it look like the nature is growing then dying and turning into three stumps as theyve been cut down for developmentof a town. I like this one more than the others because you can understand the process im trying to show better.
Idea 2, Development
With this one im still not sure if the image gets a good message across to what im trying to say. I need to explore further developments.
City In Flux
Out of all different coloured and styled cityscapes i have experimented with i think this one is my favourite because its such a simple design and the shadowing refelction of the nature is really effective as its a different tone to the top part. The contrast between grey and black on this image work really well and i am qute happy with the out I prefer this one because nothing over powers the image and i think if i find the correct text to go with it, it could be a really simple but powerful image.
City In Flux
Font research These are a few fonts that i have researched to see which one would be better use for on a poster or which one is more suited to what i am basing the project on. The first font is nice but i dont think it fits in all that well with what my project is about. I do like the second font quite a bit i think the cracked effect on the text is a really nice look and i think it could work with my project. The third font again i like but i am looking for something with a bit more of an effect. Font number four i dont really like i thought it could of worked well but as i found a lot better fonts i have come to the conclusion that i need one better suited. Font five and six i really like because of the speckled effect on them i think they could work into the project really well as a whole but more experimentation will be needed to clarify this. And the last font is by far my favourite, although similar to the speckled fonts sort of i think this one is the better of them all because its got the cityscape on and i could use this to my advantage and create something really great with my ideas.
City In Flux
Font research My favourtie fonts out of these seven are the second, fith and last one because i think they would blend in really well with the image work iv produced, i need a font that wont stand out or look the total opposite of the image. The other fonts i found i do like them and could probably produce something interesting with them but im looking for a font thats bold but not too bold and one that stands out within the imagery but not too much.
City In Flux
Font Experiment This is were i have experimented more with what i can actually do with the text and what effect i can add to it that will make it blend in more to my project base. I used these fonts on photoshop and duplicated the layer to create two then flipped vertical and horizontally to give the reflected image effect then for the blend of the refelcted part i used the gradient tool to make it look like the bottom half of the font is faded out. The first, second and third fonts are by far my favourite gradient fonts the gradient effect on them works really effectivley especially with the use of imagery that it will be with on the poster. The crackled effect on the fonts give them a rustic feel. The third one would work especially well with my cityscape as the text has a cityscape within it. The last three fonts are a little bit similar but i prefer the first ones as i feel they would work abit better within the image.
City In Flux
Font Experiment The first form of text is nice but i dont think the gradient effect that i want to use works all that well on this type of font. The second a third fonts are similar to some i already have but i like the rustic feel that they are getting across and i feel they are the right type of fonts to work with my imagery. The last one i feel is too rustic with all the patches you cant tell some of the letters within the type.
City In Flux
Text placement research Each of the fonts on these four posters are at a different position like to two on the left one has most of the text all down the left hand side in different point sizes and the other though similar its only at the top of the left hand side with some. The bottom ones are slightly different as the one on the left has a slight curve to the type which would be interesting to see how a curved text would work within the poster. the text placement on the bottom right poster wouldnt be very useful for my poster as the image is more centered a series of development will help to decide which placement will be the most effective.

City In Flux
Text placement research Alot of font placements more often or not can occur any place around the poster depending on what the image is on it, if the imagery is what your wanting to stand out more then a smaller font would be good like the tangled poster to the left. but if the image is needed as much as the type then you can even them out a way that one doesnt over power the other like the far left one with the monkey. for mine i think evening out the type with the image will be important.

Text placement research sometimes i posters we find that the text is actually incorporated into the image so that the type and image come togethetr as one, this is interesting and i would like to do some experiments withing my poster to see if i can improve the look of it any further, my favourite of these is the creature one because it fits in with the use of image very well. I dont particularly like the godzilla image although its a busy and thoughtout use of imagery i feel theres way too much going on for one poster and the type stands out too much.

Text placement research Type can come in different shapes aswell as just in different placements like these examples text can make up the shape or it can be placed inside a shape depending on what effect you want, this is something that might be considered for my poster but experiments will let me decide what works and what doesnt.
City In Flux
Choosing a font
From all the fonts i have found from researching and experimenting i have narrowed it down to these three as my favourites because i think they are the ones that work the most effective with the image work i have made, but out of these three i have decided that i prefer the third font because its a font with a skyline in it and its ht emore relevant out of all the fonts.
City In Flux
Font placement experiment
Out of these three type placement experiments i think i favourites are the middle and last one because the middle one looks simple but busy with the use of text that i have mirrored throughout the poster, the last one i like also because of the mirrored effect witht he text it works well with the skyline image thats reflected. The first one is just s simple one text experiment but the whole poster seems to be a bit blank with just one use of imagery and one use of text.
City In Flux
Font placement experiment
with these thee i think the last image is my favourite because because the larger circular use of text works well incorporated into the use of imagery again using the refelctive mirrored effect for the text aswell as the skyline. I prefer this one to the other two because again the first one is very simple and i dont think theres alot on the poster where as the last one fills abit more of it with the use of text although maybe the last one could have a bit of a bigger image so you can see the detail of the nature a little bit more. The middle text i like because of the warped effect it has but because the image of the skyline doesnt have that warped effect i think the text looks a bit strange.
City In Flux
Font placement experiment
out of these two font placement experiments i like both of them but i think i prefer the one on the left because it covers more of the page where as the one on the right is only an image with not a lot around the actual image and makes a big blank space for the image to sit in, i think if there was something around the image it would look better, although i do like how the text is behind the nature and you can see it on top of the text.
City In Flux
Favourite font placement experiments
Out of the 8 type placement experiments i have done these are the three i have managed to narrow it down to, i chose a fvourite on each page that i did and based them on how much of the background was empty and how much had been covered with imagery or text to make the poster look a bit fuller in itself and stand out more rather than to have a plain blank area around the image and type.
City In Flux
Favourite font placement From all the font placement posters i tried this one is by far my favourite because in all its a nice image to look at and i think the reflective text works wrll with the refecled image and they dont over power each other, the text gives it enough so that the imagery of the skyline stands out against it but not so much that you forget about the text behind the image. i like how they work together to make the whole thing stand out.
City In Flux
Final I have chosen this one as my final poster because out of all the experiments i have done i think this is the one that works as a whole image the best. The thoughts i get about this poster is that its telling us that in abandoned places decay and destuction start to happen as things start to rot and buildings start to fall down after time but nature slowly creeps back within the city and stops it all being just decay but it sort of brings the place back to life a little bit with the nature and animals that reside within the area. Evaluation Overall i think this is a good outcome from the project as i found it hard to get in to, Iv tried different experimentations of the text and posters to get to my final stage which is this, i like this image because its very full and stands out all together as a whole. I think if i could of done it better i would of played about with the skyline abit more to give it a bit more of a textural feel rather than it just looking like one block image on top of text. I like the use of words i have put into it i think that the words “can we coincide say alot about the image in which nature and development can live as one. If i was to re do this project with abit more experience using programmes i think i could of come up with a really nice animation piece to go with the poster.
