LETTER FROM STAN GUNDRY Dear Professor, We are pleased to present our Fall 2021 Academic Catalog featuring Zondervan Academic and Zondervan Reflective releases from August 2021 through March 2022. As always, our goal is to • publish across the broad spectrum of biblical, theological, and ministry-related disciplines; • publish works that stay abreast of current scholarship and are written by the emerging generation of scholars as well as seasoned, proven scholars; and • publish works that model irenic discussion, represent a variety of viewpoints, and yet stay within the boundaries of our commitments to the historic doctrines of orthodox Christianity and biblical authority. Our team aims to stay at the cutting edge of publishing, seeking new ways to deliver first-rate scholarship to an emerging generation heavily influenced by new technologies and social upheaval. The appearance, tragic global spread, and persistence of COVID-19 have not only disrupted our most trusted social institutions but also revealed many deep fissures in our society. As a publisher grounded in the historic Christian faith, we believe our spring list reflects our deep commitment to biblical teaching and its application—even when uncomfortable—to every part of our lives. In doing so, we have continued to lead the way in Christian academic publishing, offering resources that augment personal discipleship, call us to greater public character, and take us deeper into the study of the biblical text. As we tentatively begin to step back into our everyday lives following the COVID-19 pandemic, I’m pleased to announce that, barring unforeseen developments, you will find the Zondervan Academic team attending this year’s ETS and SBL/AAR conferences in Fort Worth and San Antonio, respectively. After a year away, we’re looking forward to getting reacquainted with each of you at our booth and various conference events. We hope you will stop by our booth, say hello, and take a moment to review our 2021 releases as well as books you may have missed from 2020. Our helpful staff, whom many of you know well, will be on hand to answer your questions and discuss our recent publications. At Zondervan Academic and Zondervan Reflective we aspire to be at the forefront of Christian publishing. We aim to encourage and challenge our readers with books rooted in the Christian theological tradition—a tradition whose endurance for more than two millennia still inspires hope in all who confess Jesus Christ as Lord. With best wishes and prayers for all of you,

Stanley N. Gundry SVP and Publisher Zondervan Academic and Zondervan Reflective Editor-in-Chief, Zondervan

The goal of the conference is to offer constructive proposals for understanding and confessing the doctrine of the Church with historical depth, ecumenical scope, and analytic clarity. “A Theology of Paul and his Letters is at the same time both panoramic in scope and attentive to the details of individual words and phrases. Moo draws on a vast wealth of scholarship, interacting fairly and charitably with others, and invariably clarifying not just Paul’s thought but also his emphases and balance. I can recommend it with pleasure—and with envy of the learning and good judgment evident throughout this book.” —SIMON GATHERCOLE, professor of New Testament and early Christianity, University of Cambridge “Moo’s careful analysis and synthesis of the entire Pauline canon is an invaluable addition to the field, as A Theology of Paul and His Letters helpfully presents the apostle’s thought organized around the concept of the new realm in Christ, permeated by union with Christ. This wonderful resource will quickly become a standard reference work for anyone interested in Christianity’s greatest missionary-pastor-theologian.” —CONSTANTINE R. CAMPBELL, author, Paul and the Hope of Glory and Paul and Union with Christ “I have found Moo’s work to be a marvelous blend of biblical-theological breadth and careful exegetical spade-work. A Theology of Paul and His Letters is the crown of that exemplary approach.” —MICHAEL HORTON, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California “Even when one may disagree with Moo, he gives an evenhanded, fair, and balanced discussion of debated issues. This, in fact, is a hallmark of the book. I heartily recommend Moo’s work. I will consult it often.” —G. K. BEALE, professor of New Testament, Reformed Theological Seminary “Anyone who reads A Theology of Paul and His Letters attentively will gain a consolidated understanding of the gospel.” —ECKHARD J. SCHNABEL, Mary F. Rockefeller Distinguished Professor of New Testament Studies, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary “This superb work of New Testament scholarship will serve the church for years to come as a reliable guide to Paul’s letters and their theological substructure.” —FRANK THIELMAN, Presbyterian Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School

Gain Insights on Mark’s Christology from Today’s Leading Scholars

“This book offers four perspectives on the presentation of Jesus in Mark and conversations among the authors of those perspectives. This format reveals both the riches and the ambiguities of Markan Christology. The book would make an excellent contribution to a course on Mark or on early Christologies.” —Adela Yarbro Collins, Yale Divinity School “Not many books offer a constructive conversation in which the expert contributors are given “equal time” and voice. This is, however, precisely what happens in Christology in Mark’s Gospel: Four Views, and the result is compelling.” —Loren T. Stuckenbruck, University of Munich The Gospel of Mark, widely assumed to be the earliest narrative of Jesus's life and the least explicit in terms of Christology, has long served as a worktable for the discovery of Christian origins and developing theologies. The past ten years of scholarship have seen an unprecedented shift toward an early, high Christology, the notion that very early in the history of the Jesus movement his followers worshipped him as God. Other studies have challenged this view, arguing that Mark's story is incomplete, intentionally ambiguous, or presents Jesus in entirely human terms. Christology in Mark's Gospel: Four Views brings together key voices in conversation in order to offer a clear entry point into early Christians' understanding of Jesus's identity. Contributors include: Sandra Huebenthal (Suspended Christology)

J. R. Daniel Kirk

Larry W. Hurtado †

Adam Winn

(Mark's Presentation of Jesus with rejoinder by Chris Keith)

(Jesus as the YHWH of Israel in the Gospel of Mark)

(Narrative Christology of a Suffering King)

Chris Keith (Mark's Presentation of Jesus with rejoinder by Chris Keith) Each author offers a robust presentation of their position, followed by lively interaction with the other contributors and one "last-word" rejoinder. The significance of this discussion is contextualized by the general editor Anthony Le Donne's introduction and summarized in the conclusion.

Dana M. Harris

Miles V. Van Pelt $59.99 | $35.99 ISBN 9780310108573 Hardcover - 608 pages

NEW RELEASE DECEMBER 2021 $16.99 | $10.19 ISBN 9780310114666 Softcover - 144 pages

Biblical Greek Vocabulary in Context by Miles V. Van Pelt is designed to reinforce a student’s basic Greek vocabulary by presenting words that occur twenty-five times or more in the context of the Greek New Testament. Miles Van Pelt collates all 513 of these Greek words into approximately 200 key biblical verses and/or verse fragments to help students practice reading them in their literary context and thus improve their Greek vocabulary retention. Rather than rote memorization, Van Pelt’s approach teaches word meaning through each word’s naturally occurring context--the way people naturally learn languages.

An Introduction to Biblical Greek Grammar focuses on the linguistic and syntactic elements of Koine Greek to equip learners for accurate interpretation. Drawing upon twenty years of Greek teaching experience and the latest developments in linguistics and syntax, Harris introduces students to basic concepts and categories necessary for grasping Greek in ways that are clear and intuitive. This solid foundation enables students first to internalize key concepts, then to apply and build upon them as more complex ideas are introduced. ALSO AVAILABLE An Introduction to Biblical Greek Workbook Dana M. Harris & Chi-ying Wang $24.99 | $14.99 ISBN 9780310108603 Softcover -176 pages

The book includes two primary sections: 1. The first section provides room for students to write their own glosses of the biblical verse and to parse as they feel necessary. An English translation is also provided, and any term that appears less than twenty-five times is glossed. Proper names are identified with gray text. 2. The second section of the book provides the same biblical verses from the first section but with minimal room to write glosses and parse and without an English translation for aid. The end of the book includes a Greek-English lexicon of all the words occurring twenty-five times or more in the Greek New Testament. MILES V. VAN PELT (PhD, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is the Alan Hayes Belcher, Jr. Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Languages at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, where he also serves as academic dean and director of the Summer Institute for Biblical Languages.

Dr. Harris has been teaching Koine Greek and developing innovative teaching materials for over thirty years, including twenty years at the seminary level. MEET CHRISTOPHER A. BEETHAM

Editor of The Concise New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis

Q A

Tell us about your academic background.

Q A

You served as a missionary in Ethiopia for ten years. What was that like?

Q A

I completed my undergraduate work at Wheaton College, graduating with a B.A. in Ancient Languages and Biblical Studies. I continued this track at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and finished with two master’s degrees. I returned to Wheaton for my PhD. The school’s heavy emphasis on quality scholarship that serves the church was a breath of fresh air. It was a great privilege to study under G. K. Beale.

I worked with an organization called SIM and most of my time there was spent teaching New Testament at two institutions, The Evangelical Theological College (pictured below) and The Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology. Both are located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital city. You’ve just wrapped work on a “concise” 1200-page Greek dictionary. What’s next? Probably a bit of a break before the fall kicks into full gear. But I am working on a volume in the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary series, 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus, that I am co-authoring with G. K. Beale. Learn More about The Concise New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis.

The Concise New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis Edited by Christopher A. Beetham The Concise New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis (CNIDNTTE) by Christopher A. Beetham is a significant resource for those looking for a quick-reference guide to aid in exegesis and interpretation. It retains all the essentials of the monumental and magisterial New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis edited by Moises Silva, bringing together its most important elements into one accessible volume. This reference includes the most vital, relevant information needed to delve deep into the study of the Greek words used in Scripture for study of the New Testament—its texts and theology. This volume offers a wealth of background and information on the meaning of Greek words in the New Testament, as well as related usage in classical Greek sources, the Greek Old Testament (Septuagint), and extrabiblical Second Temple Jewish literature. This significant tool offers the following features: • All the nearly 800 entries covering over 3,000 Greek words found in the full edition are included and presented in the same order and arrangement • Retains approximately 60 percent of the original edition, with the emphasis now on synchronic word study and usage in the Greek Old Testament, extrabiblical Second Temple literature, and especially the New Testament • The unique arrangement according to Greek words and use of English concepts is retained from the full edition and allows all users to access Greek terms regardless of their level of competence in Greek.

NEW RELEASE DECEMBER 2021 $79.99 | $47.99 ISBN 9780310598473 Hardcover - 1200 pages

• This edition retains the significant semantic-domain tool that directs the reader to all the Greek words that have something to do with a particular English word or concept. For example, under the English word “Resurrection,” there is a list of four Greek words that are related to that topic. • Discussions reflect the latest in modern scholarship • Bibliographies retain essential references to other standard lexicons and theological dictionaries The Concise New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis is the ideal tool for pastors, Bible teachers, students, and scholars engaging in exegesis. It is packed with the essential information needed to study the New Testament.

Specific criteria are applied to each allusion, providing readers with evaluation of the significance of each interpretive allusion. OLD TESTAMENT

Typology—Understanding the Bible’s Promise-Shaped Patterns How Old Testament Expectations Are Fulfilled in Christ James M. Hamilton, Jr. When you read the Bible, have you ever noticed parallels between certain people, events, and institutions? Should we understand Noah as a kind of new Adam, and if so, does that somehow point us to the second Adam? How are we to interpret these similarities? In Typology—Understanding the Bible’s Promise-Shaped Patterns, author James M. Hamilton Jr. shows that the similarities we find in the Bible are based on genuine historical correspondence and demonstrates how we recognize them in the repetition of words and phrases, the parallels between patterns of events, and key thematic equivalences. When read in light of God’s promises, these historical correspondences spotlight further repetitions that snowball on one another to build escalating significance. This book stimulates fresh thinking on the relationship between the Old and New Testaments and will help pastors, preachers, and students better understand the dynamics of inner-biblical interpretation. It explores several of the “promise-shaped patterns” we see in the Old Testament including:

• Adam and New Adam • Prophets, Priests, and Kings • The Righteous Sufferer • Creation • Exodus and New Exodus • Marriage Hamilton shows that the prophets and sages of Israel learned to interpret Scripture from Moses and his writings. And by tracing the organic development of subsequent biblical patterns, he explains how these patterns created expectations that are fulfilled in Christ. Jesus himself taught his followers to understand the Old Testament in this way (Luke 24:45), and the authors of the New Testament taught the earliest followers of Jesus how to read the Bible through a typological lens. Typology—Understanding the Bible’s Promise-Shaped Patterns equips pastors, Bible teachers, students, and serious Bible readers to understand and embrace the typological interpretive perspective of the biblical authors. You will learn to read the Bible as it was intended by its original authors while cultivating a deeper love and appreciation for the Scriptures. JAMES M. HAMILTON, JR. (PhD, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is professor of biblical theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and preaching pastor at Kenwood Baptist Church. He is the author of God’s Glory in Salvation through Judgment and the Revelation volume in the Preaching the Word commentary series. He blogs at www. jimhamilton.info, and you can follow him on twitter @DrJimHamilton.

BIBLE SURVEY & REFERENCE

Living God’s Word Second Edition Discovering Our Place in the Great Story of Scripture J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays “Duvall and Hays offer students, lay people, and their teachers a concise, yet rich introduction to God’s story. Living God’s Word finds a balance between simplicity and beauty. It is a great resource for the classroom and the Church.” —MADISON N. PIERCE, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School “In this wonderful book, Scott Duvall and Danny Hays have marvelously set forth the overarching story of Scripture as a hermeneutical guide and framework for developing a Christian world and life view. The engaging style and well-designed approach of Living God’s Word make this an ideal introduction to the meaning of Scripture. Moreover, readers will be able to see and understand how their lives fit into what God has done and is doing in the world. What a joyful privilege to recommend this excellent work!” —DAVID S. DOCKERY, Southwestern Seminary Living God’s Word is your pathway to read the Bible as it was meant to be read: as God’s Great Story. Many Christians resolve to study the Bible more fervently, but often struggle to grasp the progression of Scripture as a whole. They encounter various passages each week through unrelated readings, studies, and sermons and it all feels disconnected. But once they see the Bible as God’s Great Story, they begin to understand how it all fits together and they start see how their own lives fit into what God has done and is doing in the world. In this second edition of Living God’s Word, New Testament scholar J. Scott Duvall and Old Testament expert J. Daniel Hays help Christians consider how their lives can be integrated into the story of the Bible, thus enabling them to live faithfully in deep and important ways. Living God’s Word explores the entire Bible through broad themes that trace the progression of God’s redemptive plan. Each section deals with a certain portion of Scripture’s story and includes: • Reading/listening preparation • Connections to the Great Story • Explanation • Summary • Written assignments for further study • Observations about theological significance

“In this second and expanded edition of Systematic Theology, Wayne Grudem has made his classic work even better, more insightful, and an even greater resource for the Christian and the local church.” —SAM STORMS, PhD, lead pastor for preaching and vision, Bridgeway Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

“For years, I have frequently and enthusiastically recommended this book to students . . . . Now that this second edition has more diverse dialogue partners and even more robust treatments of key issues in the ever-developing world of theology, I have even more reasons to do so.” —AMY PEELER, PhD, Wheaton College

The most widely used resource of the last 25 years in its area, Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem has been thoroughly revised and expanded (all 57 chapters) for the first time while retaining the features that have made it the standard in its field: clear explanations, an emphasis on each doctrine’s scriptural basis, and practical applications to daily life.

“In his inimitable style, with wide-ranging engagement with sources old and new, as well as impressive clarity and verve, Bird here offers a fetching and substantive account of Christian theology.” —PHILIP G. ZIEGLER, University of Aberdeen Evangelical Theology, Second Edition helps today’s readers understand and practice the doctrines of the Christian faith by presenting a gospel-centered theology that is accessible, rigorous, and balanced. According to author Michael Bird, the gospel is the fulcrum of Christian doctrine; the gospel is where God meets us and where we introduce the world to God. And as such, an authentically evangelical theology is the working out of the gospel in the various doctrines of Christian theology.

Four Views on Heaven Michael E. Wittmer, General Editor Contributors: John S. Feinberg, J. Richard Middleton, Michael Allen, Peter Kreeft Christians from a variety of denominations and traditions are in middle of an important conversation about the final destiny of the saved. Scholars such as N. T. Wright and J. Richard Middleton have pushed back against the traditional view of heaven, and now some Christians are pushing back against them for fear that talk about the earthiness of our final hope distracts our attention from Jesus. In the familiar Counterpoints format, Four Views on Heaven brings together a wellrounded discussion and highlights similarities and differences of the current views on heaven. Each author presents the strongest case for their position, followed by responses and a rejoinder that model a respectful and irenic dialogue. Positions and contributors include: • Heaven: John S. Feinberg. This traditional view says our destiny is to leave earth and live forever in heaven where we will rest, worship, and serve God. We cannot say much about what heaven is like because its pleasures and glory will far surpass anything experienced here. We will be perfect in every way, both morally and in our knowledge. This heavenly vision may seem boring, but only because we are considering heaven from our earthly perspective. •

Earth: J. Richard Middleton. This position counters the popular Platonic notion of heaven by emphasizing that the saved will live forever with Jesus on this restored planet. Worshiping Jesus will be the climax of our experience, but we will also enjoy ordinary human activities in our redeemed state.

NEW RELEASE

Heavenly Earth: Michael Allen. An increasing number of Protestant theologians disagree with the otherworldly Platonic vision of our final destiny but also suspect that Kuyperians have swung too far in the other direction. Allen believes we will be on earth, but totally locked into Jesus in unceasing praise. This view seeks to highlight both the strengths and weaknesses of the heavenly and earthly views.

$20.99 | $12.59 ISBN 9780310093886 Softcover - 240 pages

Roman Catholic Beatific Vision: Peter Kreeft. The beatific vision is the ultimate direct self-communication of God to the individual. A person possessing the beatific vision reaches, as a member of redeemed humanity in the communion of saints, perfect salvation in its entirety, i.e. heaven. The notion of vision stresses the intellectual component of salvation, though it encompasses the whole of human experience of joy, happiness coming from seeing God finally face-to-face and not imperfectly through faith.

MICHAEL WITTMER is currently professor of systematic theology at GRTS in Grand Rapids, MI. He is the author of Heaven Is a Place on Earth, Don’t Stop Believing, The Last Enemy, and Despite Doubt. MEET BETHANY N. SOLLEREDER, AUTHOR OF WHY IS THERE SUFFERING?

Q A

You’re staying with unfamiliar hosts; what should they know? I will try any sport on offer. Though, I’ll warn you, I’m often more enthusiastic than skilled. My favourites are soccer, horseback riding, and badminton.

Q

It’s your first night at youth group, and everyone is “sharing” about themselves. What’s your short anecdote?

A

When I used to live at the Kilns (C. S. Lewis’s house in Oxford) I would dress up as a hobbit for Halloween, much to the annoyance of all the Narnia fans who came by and accused me of supporting the wrong franchise—and then they took our candy.

Q

Your book, Why is There Suffering?, addresses a very weighty topic; what do you hope readers take away?

A

In this book, I hope my readers discover the comfort of being both a little bit lost and a little bit found. May exploring the wonders of God and world be a matter of exuberant play and joyful hard work! Learn More about Why is There Suffering?

THEOLOGY

Why Is There Suffering? Pick Your Own Theological Expedition Bethany N. Sollereder “Bethany’s approach helps us appreciate that our thinking about the presence of suffering in the world is shaped by the assumptions we bring to our reflections. What if there are better ways of thinking that we haven’t explored yet? It’s the kind of approach a scientist would adopt: identify the various intellectual options and see which makes most sense of the evidence. In the case of theodicy, this evidence is located in the biblical witness to the character of God and the nature of humanity, as well as our own experience of suffering in the world around us. Bethany invites us to explore those options and work out what we think works best—and why.” —ALISTER MCGRATH, Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion University of Oxford Be engaged, enlightened, and surprised by this unique book on suffering that gives control to the reader. Similar to novels that allow readers to choose their own “paths,” Why Is There Suffering? by Bethany Sollereder invites readers to make choices that lead them on an exploration of theological possibilities about topics like:

• God’s existence

• God’s nature

• The nature of suffering

NEW RELEASE

• Evil

NOVEMBER 2021

• Pain

• The final destiny of humans and animals

Readers will face multiple possibilities regarding suffering and its theological explanations and will have to make choices about which one they find most plausible. Each decision will lead to further complexities and new choices, helping readers see how theological choices lead to certain conclusions. This book does not offer final answers. Instead, it introduces the theological possibilities, both Christian and non-Christian, that readers can explore and wrestle with so they can make informed decisions about their beliefs. Taking an intentionally light-hearted approach to a heavy topic, this accessible and winsome book presents an unusually helpful introduction to the problem of suffering and the most commonly offered responses to it. Suggestions for further reading are provided with each choice. BETHANY N. SOLLEREDER (PhD, University of Exeter) is a postdoctoral fellow at the Laudato Si’ Research Institute, Campion Hall, University of Oxford. The author of God, Evolution, and Animal Suffering, she writes regularly for journals and popular publications including Christian Century and BioLogos.org.

“The Global Church provides a beautiful tapestry of both the historical and theological growth of the church that sheds deep and thoughtful insights into the whole of church history. Every serious student of church history should read this book.” —TIMOTHY C. TENNENT, president and professor of world Christianity, Asbury Theological Seminary The Christian church of the early centuries spread throughout much of Asia, Africa, and Europe, spoke many languages, was situated within diverse cultural settings, and had varied worship practices; yet it maintained a vital unity on core teachings. The Global Church—The First Eight Centuries is an ideal introduction to the patristic era that broadens the narrative often recounted and places it more firmly in its various cultural contexts. Students of the early church, formal and informal alike, will appreciate the fresh approach and depth of insight it provides. “One of the most honest, challenging, and compelling cases for Christianity you will ever read.” —TERESA MORGAN, professor of Graeco-Roman history, University of Oxford “A thoroughly frank account of Christian history . . . Such an honest accounting reinforces the view that Christianity is an essential foundation of our civilization.” —PHILIP JENKINS, distinguished professor of history, Baylor University Historian John Dickson has spent much of the last decade reflecting on these difficult questions. The skeptics, he concludes, are right: even a cursory look at the history of Christians reveals dark things therein—violence, bigotry, war, oppression, racism, greed, child abuse, and more. Christians have been bullies. But the critics are only partly right: this is not what Christianity was at its foundation or on its best days. Jesus of Nazareth gave the world a beautiful melody—of charity, humility, and human dignity—and while many of his followers have been tone-deaf, many others have sung the tune and transformed the world. Dickson provides an honest account of the mixed history of Christianity, and asks skeptics to listen again to the melody of Christ, despite the discord produced by too many believers. He also asks Christians to reflect soberly on their own participation in the tragic inconsistencies of Christendom and pleads with them to live in tune with Christ. JOHN DICKSON (PhD, Macquarie University) is an author, speaker, historian, and media presenter. John is the author of over 20 books, two of which became television documentaries. He is a Visiting Academic in the Faculty of Classics at Oxford University (2016–2021), and Distinguished Fellow and Senior Lecturer in Public Christianity at Ridley College Melbourne.

DIGITAL TEXTBOOKS THAT IMPROVE STUDENT LEARNING “Zondervan’s Enhanced Editions of textbooks is keeping them ahead of the curve, with textbook supporting tools like reflection questions, highlights, surveys, and much more.” —Mark L. Strauss, Bethel Seminary of Bethel University “I was able to augment the loss of personal face-to-face time using the enhanced textbook because I could highlight and annotate readings in advance. As a result, our more limited online discussions began at a higher level and we could arrive at the planned outcomes for the session even though the class participants were scattered across the country and were interacting remotely. I look forward to using Enhanced Editions again next spring when we are more experienced with using technology to teach in challenging times.” —Mark Schuler, Concordia University, St. Paul

CHURCH HISTORY

Church History in Plain Language 5th Edition Bruce Shelley Marshall Shelley, Revision Editor “Christian history needs to belong to everybody. This book will help it do just that.” —THE REV. DR. JENNIFER WOODRUFF TAIT, editor, Christian History magazine “If you want a stimulating journey through the rich history of Christianity, this is the one book you must read.” —SCOTT WENIG, professor of applied theology, Denver Seminary Bruce Shelley’s classic history of the church brings the story of global Christianity into the twenty-first century. Like a skilled screenwriter, Shelley begins each chapter with three elements: characters, setting, plot. Taking readers from the early centuries of the church up through the modern era he tells his readers a story of actual people, in a particular situation, taking action or being acted upon, provides a window into the circumstances and historical context, and from there develops the story of a major period or theme of Christian history. Covering recent events, this book also:

• Details the rapid growth of evangelical and Pentecostal Christianity in the southern hemisphere • Addresses the decline in traditional mainline denominations • Examines the influence of technology on the spread of the gospel • Discusses how Christianity intersects with other religions in countries all over the world For this fifth edition, Marshall Shelley brought together a team of historians, historical theologians, and editors to revise and update this father’s classic text. The new edition adds important stories of the development of Christianity in Asia, India, and Africa, both in the early church as well as in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It also highlights the stories of women and non-Europeans who significantly influenced the development of Christianity but whose contributions are often overlooked in previous overviews of church history. This concise book provides an easy-to-read guide to church history with intellectual substance. The new edition of Church History in Plain Language promises to set a new standard for readable church history. MARSHALL SHELLEY is director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Denver Seminary. He previously served as an editor and vice president at Christianity Today International for thirty-four years. BRUCE SHELLEY † was senior professor of church history and historical theology at Denver Theological Seminary. He held the MDiv degree from Fuller Theological Seminary and PhD from the University of Iowa. Among his previous publications are The Church: God’s People; Evangelicalism in America; and The Cross and the Flame.

APOLOGETICS, PHILOSOPHY, ETHICS, & WORLDVIEW

The Faithful Apologist Rethinking the Role of Persuasion in Apologetics K. Scott Oliphint As Christians, we’re called to give an answer for the hope we have in Christ. But too often, this task can feel like we’re doing PR work for God, limiting our apologetic work to a series of strategies and tactics. In The Faithful Apologist, Scott Oliphint shows that this doesn’t have to be the case. He provides a cross-centered foundation for Christians to explain their faith in a welcoming and winsome manner that avoids any burden to “sell” Christianity to non-Christians. Drawing from the rich tradition of Reformed apologetics, Oliphint proposes a marriage between wisdom and persuasion in faith conversations. He shows that, when our faith is grounded in the Triune God and his sovereignty, our attempts to defend it will grow more confident and convincing. Accessible and thoroughly rooted in Scripture, this book takes the anxiety out of apologetics by revealing that success is not measured in the number of minds we change, but in our faithfulness to God, the Divine Persuader. Theological Ethics The Moral Life of the Gospel in Contemporary Context W. Ross Hastings “This is a courageous, cogent, and convincing account of the radical and distinctive nature of Christian ethics. Not only will it challenge, but it will inspire and excite students, pastors, and theologians alike.” —ALAN J. TORRANCE, emeritus professor, University of St. Andrews “Hastings offers insights on Trinitarian thought, the church as the locus of moral reflection, the need for grounding theology in careful biblical exposition, and the relationship of morality to spirituality. An impressive and refreshing book!” —RICHARD J. MOUW, president emeritus, Fuller Theological Seminary In Theological Ethics theologian, pastor, and ethicist W. Ross Hastings gives pastors, ministry leaders, and students a guide designed to equip them to think deeply and theologically about the moral formation of persons in our communities, about ethical inquiry and action, and about the tone and content of our engagement in the public square. The book presents a biblical perspective and a gospel-centered framework for thinking about complex contemporary issues in ways that are life-giving and that will lead readers into greater flourishing as human persons in community. This book is distinctive in presenting: • A framework for theological ethics that is robustly theological and Trinitarian. Ethics isolated from the gospel and theology becomes bad news, but when it is informed by and empowered by participation in the triune God of grace, it is part of the good news of the gospel. • An approach to theology and theological ethics that makes the Word of God the ultimate authority, and it is therefore grounded in the biblical narrative and texts. • An understanding that theological ethics are inherently missional. The church as the image of the triune God makes it the home of ethics, but in light of its missional identity, it will reverberate outward to engage the world in ways that are humble and not power-mongering, that are gospelbased and shalom-evoking. Theological Ethics is for those who lead churches or ministries (or someday will) and who urgently need deep theological grounding as they daily encounter ethical and moral issues where they need to provide a gracious, truthful, and gospel-directed response. W. ROSS HASTINGS is Sangwoo Youtong Chee Professor of Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, Canada. He is the author of Total Atonement, as well as articles in peer-reviewed journals such as the International Journal of Systematic Theology and Scottish Journal of Theology.

Believing Philosophy A Guide to Becoming a Christian Philosopher Dolores G. Morris “Morris dismantles the myth that philosophy is a luxury for those with spare time for pointless speculation about unanswerable questions. She shows that philosophy, far from being irrelevant or hostile to faith, can be good—even invaluable—for one’s faith.” —ROBERT GARCIA, associate professor of philosophy, Baylor University “Believing Philosophy is a wonderful introduction to philosophy...Morris’ treatment of complex philosophical questions of interest to Christians perfectly balances accessibility and nuance. She is especially insightful about the power, and the limits, of arguments. I will definitely read and discuss this book with Christian undergraduates and I know that we will all benefit tremendously.” —KYLA EBELS-DUGGAN, associate professor of philosophy, Northwestern University Believing Philosophy introduces Christians to the tools and resources of philosophy, helping them to understand, articulate, and defend their faith in an age of unbelief.

NEW RELEASE NOVEMBER 2021 $39.99 | $23.99 ISBN 9780310109525 Hardcover - 272 pages

In part 1, author Dolores G. Morris explains why Christians should read and study philosophy. She begins by introducing readers to the long tradition of Christian philosophy, going on to explain the basic resources of philosophical reasoning: the role and aim of reason; distinctions between truth, reason, and provability; learning to read like a philosopher; and the fundamentals of philosophical arguments. In part 2, Morris explores a sampling of philosophical topics relevant to the Christian faith. These chapters focus on two main arguments: the problem of evil and the moral argument for the existence of God. The problem of evil is often invoked as an argument for atheism. In response, the moral argument considers the reality of not only evil but of moral values in general as evidence for the existence of God. In evaluating these arguments, she also introduces students to a variety of Christian philosophical positions, including skeptical theism, the free will defense, reformed epistemology, Christian ethical theories, and a number of theodicies and defenses of the faith. Additional resources for Believing Philosophy will be available at BelievingPhilosophy.com by the book’s release date. DOLORES G. MORRIS (PhD, University of Notre Dame) is an instructor of philosophy at the University of South Florida. Her current research and teaching focuses on the mind-body problem, the implications of Hempel’s Dilemma for contemporary physicalism, philosophy of religion, early analytic philosophy, and philosophy of action.

APOLOGETICS, PHILOSOPHY, ETHICS, & WORLDVIEW

Help your students discover how philosophy can become Christ-centered wisdom. “Dr. Morris does so many things so well in this book. Christians who love philosophy, as well as those who are unsure or even skeptical about its value should read Believing Philosophy. The practical guidance, sustained look at the problem of evil, and rare combination of boldness and humility will be useful to anyone in search of wisdom.” —MICHAEL W. AUSTIN, professor of philosophy, Eastern Kentucky University “Dolores Morris’s accessible book on Christian philosophy is a wonderful gateway to understanding the relationship between faith and reason. Morris works through caricatures and misrepresentions about philosophy, and she presents important arguments and analyzes issues to show how philosophy under the Lordship of Christ can be a vital, faith-shaping tool both for individual Christians and the overall well-being of the church.” —PAUL COPAN, Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and Ethics, Palm Beach Atlantic University, and author of Loving Wisdom: A Guide to Philosophy and Christian Faith “Believing Philosophy is a gift to the church. Dr. Morris exhorts Christians to pursue wisdom as part of their discipleship into Christ-likeness. She argues compellingly that philosophy provides one avenue for that pursuit. Incredibly accessible, this work introduces the reader to the resources of philosophy (logic, argumentation, clarity, and charity) and then models how to apply those resources to the problem of evil. Believing Philosophy is a must-read for Christians who want to have tools to think more deeply about their faith and to engage charitably in the face of disagreements.” —CHRISTA L. MCKIRLAND, lecturer in systematic theology at Carey Baptist College in Auckland, New Zealand, and founder and executive director of Logia International “This is a superb introduction to many basic philosophical concepts, and proceeds with a generosity of spirit that matches its care.” —TOM MORRIS, public philosopher and author of True Success, If Aristotle Ran General Motors, and Philosophy for Dummies “For several decades now there has been a significant and discouraging gap in depth and quality between the best Christian philosophy and the most popular and accessible offerings from the “Christian apologetics” industry. This book is a welcome breath of fresh air. Clear and accessible, yet rigorous and philosophically sensitive, Dolores Morris’s Believing Philosophy is the best introduction to Christian philosophical thinking for a broad, popular readership that I have encountered.” —MICHAEL REA, Rev. Ethics Beyond Rules How Christ’s Call to Love Informs Our Moral Choices Keith D. Stanglin “Stanglin in Ethics Beyond Rules lays bare all the pseudo-foundations of the moral relativism that has gripped our culture. Tragically, even the church has been caught in the quicksand of this moral malaise and needs a fresh vision and renewed understanding of biblical ethics. Stanglin provides it in a refreshing and compelling way, focusing on many of the most pressing issues of our day. It is engagingly written, persuasively argued, and decisively relevant. Every Christian should purchase two copies, one to read, and one to give to a friend, because this book is that good.” —TIMOTHY C. TENNENT, president and professor of world Christianity, Asbury Theological Seminary “Ethics Beyond Rules is a clarion call to wake up a sleepy Church and to exhort Christians to become “loving resistance fighters.” Drawing from Scripture, tradition, history, science, and human experience, Stanglin offers an articulate defense of the church’s ageless teaching and challenges Christians everywhere to sanctify rather than submit to an increasingly secular culture.” —DEANN STUART, associate director of curriculum, Austin Institute for the Study of Family and Culture NEW RELEASE NOW AVAILABLE $26.99 | $16.19 ISBN 9780310120902 Hardcover - 256 pages

In Ethics Beyond Rules Keith Stanglin offers a clear and accessible guide for thoughtful Christians who want to lead ethical lives. Stanglin’s easy-to-understand Christian ethical system doesn’t have a long list of rules to follow but instead bases moral decision-making on Christian love. Stanglin is concerned less with a comprehensive ethics and scholarly discourse than with introducing everyone to important moral principles and modeling a way to reason through concrete issues. This resource does not answer every ethical question Christians face today, though it does provide relevant case studies such as abortion, sexual ethics, consumerism, technology, and politics. Instead, Stanglin provides a love-based framework for moral decisions that stands with the historic Christian faith, giving Christians the tools to consider the moral problems of today and the foundation to confront new issues in the years to come.

KEITH D. STANGLIN (PhD, Calvin Theological Seminary) is the director of the Center for Christian Studies in Austin, Texas, and professor of theology at Heritage Christian University in Florence, Alabama. He is the author of several books, including The Letter and Spirit of Biblical Interpretation, The Reformation to the Modern Church, and Jacob Arminius: Theologian of Grace (with Tom McCall).

Recovering Our Sanity How the Fear of God Conquers the Fears That Divide Us Michael Horton “Yet again, Michael Horton has written a book that Christians across the nation—and around the world—need to pick up and read today. Horton’s message is not only timely and critical, but it’s also a great comfort.” —BEN SASSE, United States Senator

“We need more than someone’s hot take in 280 characters. We need reasoned argument grounded in scripture and gospel hope centered on Christ, which is exactly what this book provides.” —NANCY GUTHRIE, author and Bible teacher

“Horton offers not only a penetrating analysis of our current feardriven cultural moment, but also provides a way forward that is both transcendent and timely.” —JULIUS J. KIM, PhD, president, The Gospel Coalition Fear may not be what you think it is. Michael Horton guides readers in diagnosing the misplaced fears we have, showing how only the fear of God can conquer the false gods that we often take too seriously as if they had the last word over our lives. With 24-hour news cycles and constant immersion in a world of screens and social media, we are bombarded by news reports about layoffs, the dangers of climate change, and threats to our health. Exploited by politicians who crave our alliance, fear is used to breed hatred and further divide us from one another. In Recovering Our Sanity, author Michael Horton argues that we need to resist the pull of our fear-driven culture. He mines the riches of Scripture and theology to help us better understand what fear is and how a good fear—the fear of God—drives out the bad fears that often rule our lives. A proper fear of God enables us to overcome the unhealthy, uncertain, and unknown fears that drive the disintegration of our society, our families, and our own lives. The fear of God, running from Genesis to Revelation, must once again fill the horizon of our thoughts and imaginations. As Proverbs reminds us: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” A right fear of the One who matters most leads to a lasting trust that bears a harvest of blessings for ourselves and for others.

MICHAEL HORTON (PhD) is Professor of systematic theology and apologetics at Westminster Seminary in California. Author of many books, including The Christian Faith: A Systematic Theology for Pilgrims on the Way, he also hosts the White Horse Inn radio program. He lives with his wife, Lisa, and four children in Escondido, California.

WORLD RELIGIONS

A Doubter’s Guide to World Religions A Fair and Friendly Introduction to the History, Beliefs, and Practices of the Big Five John Dickson The world is a very religious place. Wherever you look, people are worshipping, praying, believing, following, even dying for their faith. But are all religions the same? Do they all call on the same God simply using different names? Are their beliefs and practices simply cultural expressions of the same spiritual longings? Written in John Dickson’s characteristically engaging and readable style, this book presents each of the world’s five major religions in their best light, carefully outlining the history, belief systems and spiritual practices of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam so that the interested doubter can explore their similarities and differences. For believers and doubters alike, A Doubter’s Guide to World Religions provides a fair and friendly introduction.

Subversive Witness Scripture’s Call to Leverage Privilege Dominique DuBois Gilliard “Subversive Witness is a gift to the church, offering us a new, faithful way forward amid the brokenness and polarity that abounds.” —LATASHA MORRISON, founder of Be the Bridge to Racial Unity, author of the New York Times bestselling book Be the Bridge: God’s Heart for Racial Reconciliation “Subversive Witness rightly highlights the connections between privilege and power. No matter what your social-cultural location, this book compels us to recognize the various forms of power we possess—oftentimes unjustly—and what we can do to bring about equity and justice. Those readers who have humble hearts to walk through the confession, lamentation, and repentance that this book encourages will cultivate a witness that can shake the world.” —JEMAR TISBY, CEO of The Witness, Inc. and New York Times bestselling author of The Color of Compromise While preparing the way for the Lord, John the Baptist declares, “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” Many have failed to do this, in part, because repentance has become diluted. Rather than truly turning away from sin—back to God—we often equate repentance with a mere oral confession. This domesticated, unbiblical understanding of repentance bears no fruit and lacks the power to transform broken people, relationships, systems, and structures. Our lack of repentance conforms us to the patterns of this world, keeping us content amid sinful inequities, complicit with systemic injustice, and apathetic in oppressive context.

Privilege is a social consequence of our unwillingness to reckon with and turn from sin. Scripture affirms that privilege is real and declares that, rather than exploiting it for selfish gain or feeling immobilized by it, Christians have an opportunity to steward privilege and a responsibility to leverage it for the furtherance of the kingdom and the good of our neighbors. In Subversive Witness, Dominique DuBois Gilliard will highlight biblical examples of privileged people who understood this kingdom call. Their faithful witness serves as a practical model for our modern context. This book will cast a new vision for faithful participation in the inbreaking kingdom as co-laborers with Christ. It will lead the church to grapple with privilege, indifference, and systemic sin in new ways, through canonically elevating these issues. Dominique uses Scripture to elucidate how privilege emerges from sin, is sustained by our hardened hearts, and keeps us complicit with oppression. He demonstrates that Christians can wield privilege as an instrument to pursue justice and further the kingdom, instead of denying its existence or feeling incapacitated by it. Dominique illustrates how the faithful witness of biblical leaders continues to shape modern believers who have picked up the baton as drum majors for justice, embodying Scripture’s subversive call to leverage, and at times forsake, privilege to sacrificially love our neighbors, enact systemic change, and advance the kingdom of God. DOMINIQUE DUBOIS GILLIARD is the director of racial righteousness and reconciliation for the Love Mercy Do Justice (LMDJ) initiative of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) in Chicago, Illinois. He serves on the boards of directors for the Christian Community Development Association and Evangelicals for Justice. An ordained minister, Gilliard has served in pastoral ministry in Atlanta, Chicago, and Oakland.

How to Fight Racism is a handbook for pursuing racial justice with hands-on suggestions bolstered by real-world examples of change. Tisby offers an array of actionable items to confront racism in our relationships and in everyday life through a simple framework—the ARC of Racial Justice—that helps readers consistently interrogate their own actions and maintain a consistent posture of anti-racist action. This book is for anyone who believes it is time to stop compromising with racism and courageously confront it.

Drawing from a diverse range of theologians, sociologists, artists, and activists, Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth, by Thaddeus Williams, makes the case that we must be discerning if we are to “truly execute justice” as Scripture commands. Not everything called “social justice” today is compatible with a biblical vision of a better world. The Bible offers hopeful and distinctive answers to deep questions of worship, community, salvation, and knowledge that ought to mark a uniquely Christian pursuit of justice. Topics addressed include:

Talking about Race Gospel Hope for Hard Conversations Issac Adams In this honest and hopeful book, pastor Isaac Adams doesn’t just show you how to have the race conversation, he begins it for you. By offering a fictional, racially charged tragedy he helps readers better understand varying perspectives and responses. This unique approach offers insight into how to listen to one another well and seek unity in Christ. Looking to God’s Word, Christians can find wisdom to speak gracefully and truthfully about racism for the glory of God, the good of their neighbors, and the building up of the church. Some feel that the time for talking is over, and that we’ve heard all this before. But given how polarized American society is becoming—its churches not exempt—fresh attention on the dysfunctional communication between ethnicities is more than warranted. Adams offers an invitation to faithfully combat the racism so many of us say we hate and maintain the unity so many of us say we want. Together we can learn to speak in such a way that we show a divided world a different world.

Topical Preaching in a Complex World How to Proclaim Truth and Relevance at the Same Time Sam Chan and Malcolm Gill Sooner or later, every preacher will come upon a situation where they need to preach a topical sermon. Yet few are taught to preach topically. Even preachers who are gifted in expositing the Scriptures may struggle to deliver a topical sermon that is engaging, culturally relevant, and true to the biblical text. Worse, many pastors worry these messages undermine confidence in the Bible or its authority, leading to a human-centered rather than a God-focused sermon. But that doesn’t have to be the case. In Topical Preaching in a Complex World, Sam Chan and Malcolm Gill answer these objections and chart a path for how preachers can deliver faithful and effective topical messages. First, they address the biblical, theological, and cultural reasons pastors should add topical sermons to their preaching repertoire. Then, they introduce a straightforward, four-fold approach for preaching a topical message and answer important questions like these: • How do you approach a topic with the proper interpretative lens? • How can you speak to two or more audiences with the same sermon? • What should you consider theologically, culturally, and pastorally in your preparation? • How do you trace the topic back to Christ? • How can you better connect with your audience? Best of all, they help readers craft a message that says something people truly need (and want) to hear! Filled with wit, humor, and wisdom from decades of preaching, this book will equip preachers, pastors, ministry leaders, and students to preach relevant, biblical, and engaging topical sermons.

The global church is facing a discipleship crisis. Here is how we move forward. Pastors and church leaders want to see lives changed by the gospel. They work tirelessly to care for people, initiate new ministries, preach creatively, and keep up with trends. Sadly, much of this effort does not result in deeply changed disciples. Traditional discipleship strategies fail because they do not: • Slow down people’s lives so they can cultivate a deep, personal relationship with Jesus. • Challenge the values of Western culture that have compromised the radical call to follow the crucified Jesus. • Integrate sadness, loss, and vulnerability, leaving people defensive and easily triggered. • Measure our spiritual maturity by how we are growing in our ability to love others. In Emotionally Healthy Discipleship, bestselling author Pete Scazzero lays out how to create an emotionally healthy culture and multiply deeplychanged people in every aspect of church life—including leadership and team development, marriage and single ministry, small groups, preaching, worship, youth and children’s ministry, administration, and outreach. Complete with assessments and practical strategies, Emotionally Healthy Discipleship will help you move people to the beneath-the-s urface discipleship that actually has the power to change the world. PETE SCAZZERO, along with his wife, Geri, founded Emotionally Healthy Discipleship, a ministry that moves the church forward by slowing the church down in order to multiply deeply changed leaders and disciples. This journey began when Pete founded New Life Fellowship Church in Queens, New York—a multiracial church with more than seventy-three countries represented—where he served as Senior Pastor for twenty-six years.

A Simple Guide to Experience Miracles will give you confidence in and awareness of the supernatural realm as you learn how to flourish spiritually by experiencing more miraculous interventions in your life and ministry. Internationally renowned philosopher J. P. Moreland looks at the nature of miracles and explains why bearing and receiving credible testimony to God’s miraculous acts is a crucial feature of a mature Jesus-follower. He also shows how to distinguish a real miracle from a mere coincidence. Miracles bring comfort to believers, strengthening faith in God and creating boldness in our lives. While miraculous healings have occurred frequently throughout church history, Moreland provides data showing how the last fifty years have seen a massive outbreak of miracles and supernatural activity. Today, he argues, the church should humbly expect to see more of these miraculous works of God than we do. Moreland looks at topics like:

A Counselor’s Guide to Christian Mindfulness Engaging the Mind, Body, and Soul in Biblical Practices and Therapies Regina Chow Trammel and John Trent Mindfulness is now a therapeutic touchstone for a range of emotional issues, from mild distress to the treatment of trauma. It emphasizes quiet, analog practices that balance out the busyness of our daily techno-heavy lives. Christian mindfulness is about making time, on purpose, to turn our whole attention to God so we can hear his still small voice above the chatter. It is a sense of awareness that encompasses the thought life of the person leading them to become more aware of their thoughts with a conscious, non-judgmental posture. In A Counselor’s Guide to Christian Mindfulness John Trent and Regina Trammel offer counselors training in mindfulness skills used in evidencebased practices, such as dialectical behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. These therapies have been shown to be highly effective in the treatment of many mental health issues, blending elements from the fields of neuroscience, social science, and religious training. Regina Trammel and John Trent offer a Christian perspective that will help Christian counselors and therapists confidently use mindfulness interventions with those they treat and help. The practice of Christian mindfulness can be tremendously helpful in developing biblical skills to help clients manage their intrusive and stressful thoughts, emotions, relationships, and challenges. This book fills a gap for Christian counselors and therapists who are eager for a resource that teaches mindfulness skills from a purposefully Christian and biblical perspective.

ENDNOTES: A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

EndNotes: A Letter from the Editor Congratulations, you have made it to the end of the Zondervan Academic Fall 2021 Catalog! As a special treat, you get a glimpse behind the curtain of our acquisitions. As an acquiring editor, I meet with many scholars to discuss book ideas or to talk about Zondervan Academic. One question I am asked most frequently is “What are you looking for?” The inquirer is probably expecting me to say “I am looking for a book on X” (X being right in their area of expertise). Sorry to disappoint, but no one has ever gotten that answer out of me. When confronted with this question, I will always fall back on the basics—what makes us at Zondervan Academic excited to do what we do. First and foremost what makes us tick is great content. We are nothing if what we publish is not good enough. That’s the baseline, the assumption, the cornerstone of all we do. I am looking for your great content. That does not mean, however, that we just “hit print” on your book. One of the values that was instilled in me when I first started at Zondervan almost twenty years ago was what we call editorial excellence. In the movie Genius, a story about the legendary editor Maxwell Perkins, there is a quote with which I deeply resonate. Colin Firth, as Perkins, says, “That’s what we editors lose sleep over, you know. Are we really making books better or just making them different?” Editors really do lose sleep over this. For this reason, every book at Zondervan Academic is cared for by not one but two in-house editors: the acquisitions editor (me) who develops a publishing strategy and works closely with you through the substantive edit, and a production editor who sees the book through its later stages of editing, composition, and production to that newly minted book in your hand. We are looking for authors who are eager to work with us in making their great content better—no, not just better, excellent.

Katya Covrett, PhD Cand. Executive Editor Zondervan Academic

Our striving for excellence does not stop at editing. Our team of publishing professionals—editorial managers, designers, compositors, production specialists—is dedicated to shepherding your book through a carefully designed publishing process. And, once the book is out, we have the best marketing team for getting it into the hands of your readers. Our marketers get involved with each book months before publication and work tirelessly to amplify your voice. We are looking for authors who are willing and excited to partner with us on this journey. The journey’s destination is intimately bound up with our mission, which we take very seriously. In everything we publish, our deepest desire is to reflect the breadth, both theological and global, of the great Christian tradition and the diversity of the worldwide Body of Christ. This mission compels us not only to seek out the great content that is so foundational to who we are, but to pursue proactively the voices of women, people of color, and scholars from the Majority World for the enrichment and growth of the whole Church. This missional lens is one we apply to every book that eventually makes it into the pages of this catalog before you. We are looking for those who would join us in our mission to create books for others who wish to grow in their understanding and in their faith. If you had ever wondered what it is that Zondervan Academic is looking for, this is how I would answer it. What question would you ask an editor?
