about the

Dear Professor, We are pleased to present our Fall 2022 Academic Catalog featuring Zondervan Academic and Zondervan Reflective releases from September 2022 through March 2023. As always, our goal is to • publish across the broad spectrum of biblical, theological, and ministry-related disciplines; • publish works that stay abreast of current scholarship and are written by the emerging generation of scholars as well as seasoned, proven scholars; and • publish works that model irenic discussion, represent a variety of viewpoints, and yet stay within the boundaries of our commitments to the historic doctrines of orthodox Christianity and biblical authority. Our team aims to stay at the cutting edge of publishing, seeking new ways to deliver first-rate scholarship to a new generation heavily influenced by new technologies and social upheaval. As a publisher grounded in the historic Christian faith, we believe our fall list reflects our deep commitment to biblical teaching and its application—even when uncomfortable—to every part of our lives. In honoring this commitment, we have continued to lead the way in Christian academic publishing, offering resources that augment personal discipleship, call us to greater public character, and take us deeper into the study of the biblical text. After two years away, we’re eagerly anticipating our in-person return to both the ETS and AAR/SBL conferences in Denver, CO, this fall. We are fully committed to these conferences where theologians and scholars from all over the world come to discuss important matters of faith, ethics, and religion. We hope to see each of you there and cordially invite you to stop by our booth and introduce yourself or get reacquainted with our team. See you in November! Also, as we enter the new school year, we remain attentive to both the traditional and emerging needs of Christian educators and schools here in the United States and around the world. Concerns about increasing costs, enrollment numbers, and the future of Christian education are undoubtedly on your mind, as they are on ours. We continue striving to provide schools, faculty, and students with resources that emphasize academic excellence while balancing cost, technology, and the evolving needs of the twenty-first century classroom.

3. The Dead Sea Scrolls—Cecilia Wassén

To understand the New Testament well, it is important to study the larger world surrounding it, and one of the primary avenues for this exploration is through reading related ancient texts. But this task is daunting for scholars and novices alike given the sheer size of the ancient literary corpora. The Ancient Literature for New Testament Studies series aims to bridge this gap by introducing the key ancient texts that form the cultural, historical, and literary context for the study of the New Testament.

4. The Apostolic Fathers—Paul Foster 5. Philo and Josephus—TBD 6. Greco-Roman Literature— Joseph Emanuel Sanzo and Michael C. Sloan

“The ALNTS series provides a comprehensive survey and introduction of literature from the ancient world that is relevant to the interpretation of the New Testament. It spans Jewish, Christian, and Greco-Roman literature and includes papyri and other non-literary evidence. There is nothing like this available hitherto. This is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the New Testament.”

Early New Testament Apocrypha offers an entry point into the corpus of early Christian apocryphal literature through twenty-eight texts or groups of texts. While the majority of the texts fall within the first four centuries CE, and therefore are useful for uncovering the earliest interpretations assigned to the New Testament, select later texts serve as reminders of how the meanings of New Testament texts continued to develop in subsequent centuries. Each essay covers introductory matters, a summary of content, interpretive issues, key passages for New Testament studies and their significance, and a select bibliography. Whether you are a scholar looking to familiarize yourself with a new corpus of texts or a novice seeking to undertake a serious contextualized study of the New Testament, this is an ideal reference work for you.

7. Targums and Rabbinic Literature—Bruce Chilton and Alan J. Avery-Peck

Ancient Literature for New Testament Studies is a 10-volume series that introduces key ancient texts that form the cultural, historical, and literary context for the study of the New Testament. Neither too technical to be used by students nor too thin on interpretive information to be useful for serious study of the New Testament, this series provides a much-needed resource for understanding the New Testament in its Jewish, Greco-Roman, and early Christian contexts.

History of the Quests for the Historical Jesus, Volumes 1and 2

A History of the Quests for the Historical Jesus is an extensive two-volume reassessment of the situation, beginning with the evolution of orthodoxy and quests before Schweitzer’s, through the Nazi attempt to make Jesus an Aryan critic of Judaism, and to today’s ongoing questions about criteria, methods, and specific issues. The late Colin Brown brings his scholarly prowess in both theology and biblical studies to bear on the subject of the quests, assessing not only the historical, exegetical, critical nuts and bolts of the debate but also its philosophical and theological underpinnings. Instead of seeking a bedrock of “facts,” Brown stresses the role of hermeneutics in formulating questions and seeking answers. Whether we realize it or not, “facts” themselves are shaped by our hermeneutics and belief Sophisticatedsystems. in both its philosophical-theological and historical-exegetical dimensions, this new survey and analysis of the quests for the historical Jesus makes a landmark contribution to this important topic in biblical studies. Colin Brown was almost finished with the manuscript at the time of his passing in 2019. Brought to its final form by Craig A. Evans, this book promises to become the definitive history and assessment of the quests for the historical Jesus.

Jesus of Nazareth ranks among the most important figures in history. Yet, in contemporary scholarship, there is no common agreement about his identity. It is generally accepted that there were three quests for the historical Jesus. The first was characterized by Albert Schweitzer and came to be called the “Old Quest,” while the second was conceived of as the “New Quest” of the 1950s. The interval between the Old and New Quests was facetiously called the “No Quest.” This three-quest history in fact came about more due to the ingenuity of publishers than to the scholars engaged in the enterprise. But in the 1970s and 1980s, there emerged yet another quest, which was often informally referred to as the “Third Quest.” This quest was largely driven by scholars in search of the historical, social, and religious setting of Jesus and his followers. The Dead Sea Scrolls, archaeological findings, papyri, and other material remains came to play an important part in this newer research.

COLIN BROWN (1932–2019; DD, University of Nottingham; PhD, University of Bristol) was senior professor of systematic theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He taught and wrote on the historical Jesus, Christology, philosophical theology, New Testament theology, history and criticism, and miracles. He served as editor of The New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and was the author of several books, including Miracles and the Critical Mind, History and Faith, and Jesus in European Protestant Thought

CRAIG A. EVANS (PhD, Claremont; DHabil, Budapest) is the John Bisagno Distinguished Professor of Christian Origins at Houston Baptist University. Author and editor of more than ninety books and hundreds of articles and reviews, Evans has lectured at major universities worldwide and has regularly appeared on Dateline NBC, CBC, CTV, Day of Discovery, and in many documentaries aired on BBC, The Discovery Channel, History Channel, History Television, and National Geographic Channel speaking on the historical Jesus, the New Testament Gospels, archaeology, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Bible.

Volume One covers the period from the beginnings of Christianity to the end of World War II.

“Not since the grand survey of Albert Schweitzer at the beginning of the 20th century have we seen… such a vast review of… literature on the historical Jesus.

TIM MACKIE , cofounder of the Bible Project “Dr. Gupta brings the best of biblical scholarship to the pews, where stan dard Christian ways of talking about things have grown stale. By highlighting these fifteen key words, he opens a whole new world of understanding that will reinvigorate Christian practice. A New Testament Theology for Real Life Nijay K. Gupta “While the New Testament is full of depth and complexity, its most important ideas have a profound simplicity to them. In this collection of word studies, Nijay Gupta explores foundational themes in New Testament theology, but in a very accessible way. If you’re looking to deepen your understanding of some of the most essential concepts in Christian belief, this book is for you!”

In 15 New Testament Words of Lif e, biblical scholar Nijay Gupta explores some of the most important New Testament words: These are familiar terms in the Christian vocabulary, but many don’t know the original background and theological importance of these words, and how they can be life-giving for Christian faith and life today. To access the deep meaning of these words in the theological vocabulary of the New Testament writers, Gupta discusses each word within a key text and interprets it in three •contexts:Canonical—how the New Testament is grounded in the Old • Literary—the meaning developed within the key text • Historical—the Jewish and Greco-Roman world of the first century For those first hearers of the gospel who chose to follow Jesus, these words were the words of life, and they can be once again for Jesus-followers in the modern world. With Gupta’s skilled guidance, readers will find their engagement with the New Testament revitalized as they begin to understand how these inspiring ancient words can still be captivating, thought-provoking, and worldview-shaping words for real life today.

How the Bible’s Last Book Subverts Christian Nationalism, Violence, Slavery, Doomsday Prophets, and More Scot McKnight with Cody Matchett

The biblical Book of Revelation frustrates and fascinates many people with its imagery and apocalyptic tone. Most popular interpretations of the book rely on a perspective known as dispensationalism, popularized by the Scofield Bible and more recently the Left Behind series of novels. Yet there are many problems with this popular way of reading Revelation, and until now, few alternatives that were easy to grasp and Inunderstand.

Revelation for the Rest of Us , world renowned New Testament scholar and author Scot McKnight explores the timeless message of Revelation and how it speaks to us today with a courageous challenge to be faithful witnesses to Jesus while standing against the ever-present reality of worldly authorities. The writer, John, stimulates the imagination to see the world differently, through the eyes of God, presenting a “divine politics” that subverts the sinful patterns of governments, empires, and those in power. McKnight addresses the popular misconceptions about the book, explaining what John means by the images of dragons, lambs, and beasts, and how the symbolism of Revelation speaks powerfully to the present day--though not in the way most people think. Drawing from the latest scholarship, he presents an understanding of Revelation for anyone interested in deepening their personal study of the Bible as well as preachers looking to communicate this timeless message today. John designed his book of Revelation to disciple readers into dissidents of the ways of the world and empire. John describes that empire with the term “Babylon”—a timeless image of empire, militarism, economic exploitation, injustice, and oppression. Babylon is a timeless image of empire, militarism, economic exploitation, injustice, and oppression. The book of Revelation disciples Christians through worship and the courageous challenge of faithful, or allegiant, witness. John’s dissident disciples can discern the presence of “Babylon” in our world and learn to speak up, speak out, and walk in the way of the Lamb. He disciples us by stimulating our imaginations to see the world and “Babylon” through the eyes of God, and in so doing John presents a “divine politics,” a view of government and power that subverts the sinful patterns of “Babylon” today.

Following the proven model established in Reading Romans in Context, Reading Mark in Context, and Reading Revelation in Context , this book brings together a series of accessible essays that compare and contrast the theology and hermeneutical practices of the book of Hebrews with various early Jewish literature.

Going beyond an introduction that merely surveys historical events and theological themes, this textbook examines individual passages in Second Temple Jewish literature in order to illuminate the ideas and emphases of Hebrews’s varied discourses. Following the rhetorical progression of Hebrews, each chapter in this textbook (1) pairs a major unit of Hebrews with one or more sections of a thematically related Jewish text, (2) introduces and explores the historical and theological nuances of the comparator text, and (3) shows how the ideas in the comparator text illuminate those expressed in Hebrews. In addition to the focused comparison provided in the essays, the book offers other student-friendly features that will help them engage broader discussions, including an introductory chapter that familiarizes students with the world and texts of Second Temple Judaism and a glossary of important terms. The end of each chapter contains a list of other thematically relevant Second Temple Jewish texts recommended for further study and a focused bibliography pointing students to critical editions and higher-level discussions in scholarly literature they might use to undertake their own comparative studies.

This book stimulates fresh thinking on the relationship between the Old and New Testaments and will help pastors, preachers, and students better understand the dynamics of inner-biblical interpre tation. Hamilton shows that the prophets and sages of Israel learned to interpret Scripture from Moses and his writings. And by tracing the organic development of subsequent biblical patterns, he explains how these patterns created expectations that are fulfilled in Christ. Jesus himself taught his followers to understand the Old Testament in this way (Luke 24:45), and the authors of the New Testament taught the earliest followers of Jesus how to read the Bible through a typological lens.

Old Testament Use of Old Testament A Book-by-Book Guide

Old Testament Use of Old Testament by Gary Edward Schnittjer surveys the hundreds of Old Testament allusions within the Old Testament and provides hermeneutical guidance for interpreting these interrelated scriptures. The handbook takes an easy to navigate book-by-book approach. Schnittjer provides a list of Scripture allusions for each book and follows with an interpretive profile of how that book uses passages from elsewhere in the Old Testament. Specific criteria are applied to each allusion, providing readers with evaluation of the signifi cance of each interpretive allusion. Minor allusions caused by style, figures of speech, and other minor elements are not included. Responsible exegesis requires careful attention to interrelated scriptures, yet there is a host of interpretive difficulties related to Scripture’s use of Scripture. Designed for ease-of-use for any serious student of the Bible, Old Testament Use of Old Testament offers a thorough, systematic tool to aid in evaluating scriptural interpretation of Scripture. This dynamic tool equips students of the Bible to:

James M. Hamilton Jr. shows that the similarities we find in the Bible are based on genuine historical correspondence and demonstrates how we recognize them in the repetition of words and phrases, the parallels between patterns of events, and key the matic equivalences. When read in light of God’s promises, these his torical correspondences spotlight further repetitions that snowball on one another to build escalating significance.

Imagining the Minor Prophets’ World John Goldingay “Disciplined imagination is a powerful tool in bringing the scriptures to life and John Goldingay puts his well-informed imagination to work here in ways that entertain and educate in equal measure.”

The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets

JOHN GOLDINGAY (PhD, University of Nottingham; DD, Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth) is professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary, but lives in Oxford, England. His numerous books include An Introduction to the Old Testament , A Reader’s Guide to the Bible , Reading Jesus’s Bible , and commentaries on Psalms, Isaiah, and Daniel. He has also authored Biblical Theology , the three-volume Old Testament Theology , and the seventeen-volume Old Testament for Everyone series, and has published a translation of the entire Old Testament called The First Testament: A New Translation .

CHRISTOPHER J. H. WRIGHT, Langham Partnership “Goldingay takes the often overlooked Minor Prophets and brings clarity not only to their message but also to the tensions they provoked.”

SHANNON LAMB , InterVarsity Christian Fellowship USA “A sparkling exercise in disciplined imagination that opens up the Minor Prophets.”

For many Christians reading the Old Testament, trying to understand Israel’s prophets is like listening to just one side of a phone conversation—you only get half the idea of it. You hear the answer, but how do you know what question the prophet is answering?

The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets offers an imaginative, fun, and engaging way for students, pastors, and all serious Bible readers get a better grip on what is happening in these often misunderstood biblical books and get more out of their Bible reading and study.

M. DANIEL CARROLL R , (Rodas), Wheaton College and Graduate School

In The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets , John Goldingay uncovers the questions behind the prophets’ answers that make their meaning and relevance intelligible to us. Written as a series of imaginary letters to the twelve Minor Prophets, The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets asks the kinds of questions that Hosea, Micah, Zechariah, and others were answering. The letters make clear the issues these prophets of Israel were dealing with or deliver the news they were responding to in their Old Testament writings.

OLD TESTAMENT28

Though Christians affirm that the Old Testament bears witness to Christ, how the Old Testament writers did this is a matter of extensive debate. Furthermore, Christian biblical scholars also debate the degree to which contemporary interpreters of the Bible can follow the hermeneutics of the New Testament authors in using the Old Testament to point to the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Scripture Hermeneuticsand Seminar, 25th Anniversary

Retrospect and Prospect

In celebration of the 25th year of the seminar (1997–2022), this compendium reflects on its work and impact. It offers new essays that chart the value of the seminar for biblical interpretation and the needs of biblical interpretation in the future, and includes stories from the formative SAHS community. This volume distills the work of the seminar for a new generation of students, opening to them a gateway to the community and to the resources developed over the past two decades.

This celebratory volume not only gives a unique perspective on the architecture of biblical interpretation in the first quarter of the twenty-first century, but it is offered in hope of preparing fertile soil for the next generation of women and men to cultivate biblical interpretation for years to come. essays by Craig Bartholomew, David Beldman, Amber L. Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics is considered by many to be the most important theological work of the twentieth century and for many people reading it, or at least understanding it contents and arguments, is a lifelong goal. Yet its enormous size, at over 12,000 pages (in English translations) and enough print volumes to fill an entire shelf, make reading it a daunting prospect for seasoned theologians and novices alike.

Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics for Everyone, Volume 1—The Doctrine of the Word of God helps bridge the gap for would-be Karl Barth readers from beginners to professionals by offering an introduction to Barth’s theology and thought like no other. User-friendly and creative, this guide helps readers get the gist, significance, and relevance of what Barth intended for the church...to restore the focus of theology and revitalize the practices of the church. Each section contains insights for pastors, new theologians, professionals, and ordinary people including summaries of the section, contextual considerations, and other visually informative features that reinforce the main points of the Barth’s thought. In addition, each volume features the voices of authors from different academic disciplines who contribute brief reflections on the value of Church Dogmatics for creative discovery in their disciplines. Volume 1 reflections include:

• Richard Keith (pastors)

• Myk Habets (systematic theology)

Roger E. Olson “Roger Olson’s Against Liberal Theolog y is a courageous and calm definition, exam ination, and evaluation of the collapse of authentic, orthodox Christian theology in the minds, hearts, and hands of one liberal (not progressive) theologian after anoth er. In their own words, Olson often shines a bright, piercing light on their own crit icisms. This is a vintage example of Olson being Olson: he knows the literature, he is candid, he is fair, and he is unstinting in criticism of the pitfalls of liberal theo logians. And he examines only those who overtly espouse ‘liberal’ in their theology. Those most attracted into progressivism and then into liberalism will benefit from a humble reading of this book.”

SCOT MCKNIGHT, Northern Seminary “Roger Olson shows us the absolute theological vacuity of American liberal Christianity. He demonstrates that liberalism’s God is a mirror of themselves, their Jesus is not worthy of worship nor a savior of any sort, and the Holy Spirit is merely a symbol for their own musings. Olson’s verdict is damning but indubitable: liberal Christianity has little to do with classic or historical Christianity.”

MICHAEL BIRD, Ridley College Liberal Christian theology permeates mainlines denominations and progressive circles of the church to this day. But what is liberal theology? What are progressive Christians progressing toward, and what are they leaving behind? In Against Liberal Theology , professor and theologian Roger E. Olson warns progressive and mainline Christians against passively accepting the ideas of liberal theology without thinking through the consequences. In doing so, he examines the basic beliefs of the Christian faith, the main ideas of liberal theology, the way today’s mainline and progressive Christianity relates to classic liberalism, and how classic Christian faith and liberal Christianity connect and contradict. Following in the footsteps of Gresham Machen’s now-classic Christianity and Liberalism 100 years ago, Olson worries that liberal Christianity may not be Christianity but a different religion altogether. After examining the origins of liberal theology in the nineteenth century, Olson examines how liberal theology views:

What’s the Point of Theology?

Theology is the study of the nature of God and of religious belief. But why should that matter to us? What’s the point of theology?

“Alister McGrath invariably combines enormous scholarship with an accessible and engaging style.”

MARSHALL SHELLEY is director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Denver Seminary. He previously served as an editor and vice president at Christianity Today International for thirty-four years.

In this wonderfully accessible book, renowned theologian Alister McGrath answers those questions and explores the depth and breadth of what theology can bring to our lives. Drawing on insights from his experience of coming to Christianity from atheism, this exhilarating and enlightening volume reveals how theology can help us grow in wisdom, contribute to our wellbeing, spark our innate sense of wonder and, above all, grow in faith and love as we draw ever closer to the divine. Ideal for new and seasoned Christians who want to engage more deeply with their faith, as well as those who are puzzled by spiritual matters and curious to find out more, What’s the Point of Theology? will open your eyes to all that theology has to offer – a wiser understanding of what really matters, a richer vision of the good life, a deeper appreciation of the beauty of nature and an avenue to strengthen your faith and relationship with God.

“Christian history needs to belong to everybody. This book will help it do just that.”

THE REV. DR. JENNIFER WOODRUFF TAIT, editor, Christian History magazine Bruce Shelley’s classic history of the church brings the story of global Christianity into the twenty-first century. Like a skilled screenwriter, Shelley begins each chapter with three elements: characters, setting, plot. Taking readers from the early centuries of the church up through the modern era he tells his readers a story of actual people, in a particular situation, taking action or being acted upon, provides a window into the circumstances and histori cal context, and from there develops the story of a major period or theme of Christian history.

• The theology of the Reformers, with special attention to their confessions, catechisms, and church liturgies This balanced, insightful, and accessible treatment of the Reformation will help readers see this watershed moment in the history of Christianity with fresh eyes and appreciate the unity they have with the church across time. Over against common caricatures today, readers will discover that the Reformation was not the invention of something new, but the renewal of something very old: the grace and gospel that the church cherished and passed on across every century. 2023

The Reformation as Renewal: Retrieving the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church is a fresh, holistic, and eye-opening introduction to one of the most significant turning points in the history of the Christian church. Taking into consideration both the historical and intellectual origins of sixteenth century reform, Matthew Barrett demonstrates that the Reformation was at its core a renewal of evangelical catholicity. Rome charged the Reformers with novelty, as if they were heretics departing from the catholic (universal) Church. But the reformers believed they were more catholic than Rome. Distinguishing themselves from Radicals, the Reformers were convinced they were retriev ing the faith of their fathers, both patristic and medieval. Rather than break ing with the Church, the reformers saw themselves as faithful stewards of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church preserved across history. While Rome depended on innovations that originated in the late medieval era, the Reformers linked arms with the church across all ages, patristic and medieval, to restore true worship and gospel renewal in their own day. By listening to the Reformers’ own voices, The Reformation as Renewal helps readers explore:

• The Reformation’s response to the charge of novelty by an appeal to evangelical catholicity

• The spread of the Reformation across Europe, as seen in first and second-generation leaders from Zwingli and Bullinger in Zurich to Bucer and Calvin in Strasbourg and Geneva to Tyndale and Cranmer in England, and many others

including

• The ecclesiastical and theological milieu of the sixteenth century that motivated Martin Luther’s response in Wittenberg.

• The Reformation’s roots in patristic and medieval thought and its response to late medieval innovations

I wrote this book over three years, but I needed that previous decade of work with Tim, just to become familiar with his entire catalog of books, unpublished white papers, and sermons from Redeemer Presbyterian Church since 1989. In one sense the pandemic made my job easier, because Tim’s friends and family were readily available for interviews over Zoom. Maybe the biggest challenge was the lack of secondary sources about Tim. Even readers who thought they knew Tim will be surprised by what they learn in this book. Until now he hasn’t spoken much, if at all, about some of his most formative spiritual and intellectual in uences. Everyone who reads or listens to Tim knows about C. S. Lewis, and maybe even knows that Tim’s wife, Kathy, was one of the last people to correspond with Lewis before his death in November 1963. But they’ve never heard of Barbara Boyd. They don’t know anything about Tim’s mother or brother. They don’t know much about his ministry context in Hopewell, Virginia, or the revivals he experienced in college and New York. They probably don’t recognize the pivotal role played by Elisabeth Elliot while Tim and Kathy studied together in seminary. I learned a lot—stunned, sometimes, by what I discovered. I suspect readers will have the same experience.

Q A Q A COLLIN HANSEN

Q A What inspired you to write this book?

I’m grateful to Tim and Kathy for trusting me to write about such intimate aspects of their lives, especially concerning their families and friends. You learn a lot about someone by asking the people who knew them long before unwanted fame arrived.

What can you tell us about the writing process for this book?

What unique challenges did you face in researching this book?

I’m honored that Zondervan Re ective invited me to write this book, and that Tim Keller agreed to the interviews that make this book possible. I’ve known Tim since 2007, when we began editing books together. Then in 2010 I began working for The Gospel Coalition (TGC), which he co-founded. As the vice president of content and editor in chief for TGC, I’ve had a front-row seat to see how his theological vision applies to all of life. It’s amazing to think that during that window of time Tim published almost all the books—including Center Church —that made him internationally famous. I’ve always wanted to know how Tim developed his expansive array of in uences, which you can see most clearly in his footnotes. That curiosity took on new urgency near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when Tim received his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. I wanted the world to hear from Tim himself how he pieced together his whole theological vision.

Timothy Keller is not a traditional biography. This book is a unique concept that illumines the subject by focusing exclusively on his in uences. Tim doesn’t enjoy talking about himself or his own in uence on the church and world. But he loves talking about who he’s reading, what he learned in seminary, how others helped him overcome weaknesses and failures as a pastor. He’s always pointing the attention to others. That de ection can conceal a deliberate pattern of growth, like rings on a tree. The gospel core is still his core message today. But he’s never stopped adding rings, even now while undergoing cancer treatments. I’ll probably need to add another chapter in a couple years!

His Spiritual and Intellectual Formation Collin Hansen Millions have read books and listened to sermons by Timothy Keller. But which people and what events shaped his own thinking and spiritual growth? With unfettered access to Keller’s personal notes and sermons—as well as exclusive interviews with family members and longtime friends—Collin Hansen gives you unprecedented understanding of one of the 21st century’s most influential church Spendleaders.any time around Timothy Keller and you’ll learn what he’s reading, what he’s learning, what he’s seeing. The story of Timothy Keller is the story of his spiritual and intellectual influences, from the woman who taught him how to read the Bible to the professor who taught him to preach Jesus from every text to the philosopher who taught him to see beneath society’s surface. For the first time, Hansen introduces readers to Keller’s early years: the home where he learned to tell stories from the trees, the church where he learned to care for souls, and the city that lifted him to the international fame he never wanted. New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

On November 3, 2020, Tim and Aileen Challies received the shocking news that their son Nick had died. A twenty-year-old student at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, he had been participating in a school activity with his fiancée, sister, and friends, when he fell unconscious and collapsed to the ground. Neither students nor a passing doctor nor paramedics were able to revive him. His parents received the news at their home in Toronto and immediately departed for Louisville to be together as a family. While on the plane, Tim, an author and blogger, began to process his loss through writing. In Seasons of Sorrow, Tim shares realtime reflections from the first year of grief—through the seasons from fall to summer—introducing readers to what he describes as the “ministry of sorrow.”

RANDY ALCORN, author of Heaven and If God Is Good “Believers need this book, and only Tim Challies could have written it. I am so thankful that Nick was a student at Boyce College, and his influence as a young Christian was remarkable.”

ALBERT AND MARY MOHLER

A pastor, noted speaker, and author of numerous articles, TIM CHALLIES is a pioneer in the Christian blogosphere. More than thirty thousand people visit Challies.com each day, making it one of the most widely read and recognized Christian blogs in the world. Tim is the author of several books, including Visual Theology and The Next Story . He and his family reside near Toronto, Ontario.

“If ever there was a book Tim Challies needed to write, it’s this one. And it’s a book I needed to read. Within these pages, you will do more than enter Tim’s story of enormous loss; you will come out on the other side having gained a softer heart and a renewed courage to persevere through your own dark seasons of affliction.”

Seasons of Sorrow

We are fitted to the ministry of sorrow by suffering loss. Just as God calls some to proclaim the gospel in far-off lands, he calls some to bear witness to his goodness in grief. Just as he calls some to give generously and some to act mercifully, he also calls some to grieve faithfully. Through this ministry we learn to come alongside others who may face a similar loss and minister to them in their sorrow, comforting them with the comfort we ourselves have received from God—weeping with those who weep. An honest account of the pain of loss and the doubts and fears that often plague us in our grief, as well as the hope we have in the midst of our sorrow, this is a book for anyone who has loved and lost. It shows us how to grieve, not as the world grieves, but as those who have real hope in a real Savior.

PAUL DAVID TRIPP, pastor, speaker, author of New Morning Mercies and Suffering: Gospel Hope When Life Doesn’t Make Sense “ Seasons of Sorrow cut straight to my soul. I read it within a few weeks of the unexpected deaths of two close friends and while my wife struggles bravely with stage 4 cancer. Tim’s heartfelt pain and Christ-centered perspective spoke to both my heart and my head.”

JONI EARECKSON TADA , founder of the Joni and Friends International Disability Center “ Seasons of Sorrow is a beautiful book. Reading it is like holding a precious gift, like standing on holy ground.”

ANDREW T. WALKER , associate professor of Christian ethics, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, author of Liberty for All In Religious Freedom in a Secular Age author Michael Bird argues that religious freedom should not be preserved by churches entrusting themselves to the protection of a Trumpian leader draped in the apparel of civil religion, nor should they consent to allowing religious freedom to be steam rolled by progressive activists with their increasing hostility towards people of faith. What is needed instead is a better appreciation for how secular ism can work to create space for people of all faiths and none, to resolve tense relationships between church and state, and come to a fair and equitable settlement when religious liberty and LGBTI+ rights come into conflict. Bird tackles complicated debates about the nature, extent, and limitations of religious freedom with a view to encouraging Christians to stand up for their faith in a post-Christian world, in a way that is humble and gentle, yet also courageous. $18.99 | $11.39 ISBN Softcover9780310538882-224pages RELEASE

What is it that you do? I guess “French studies” does sound a bit odd, doesn’t it! Basically, I research recent French philosophy, mainly philosophers who are still alive. I’ve written books on French philosophical atheism and what philosophers today think human beings are, and I’m currently in the middle of an academic project on the idea of the social contract. On my website I sum it all up by saying that I try to make sense of how people make sense of the world, and that’s a big part of what I’m doing in Biblical Critical Theory : explaining why people see the world in the way they do. Your book is intriguingly titled Biblical Critical Theory

Tell us about your academic work. You are a lecturer in intriguingly named “French studies” in Australia and your website lists “philosophy, religion, atheism, humanity, and freedom” within your sphere of academic engagement.

I was frantically reading about all the big “theories”: Marxism and feminism, eco-theory, and queer theory, and writing essays about meaning, power, and identity. As a young Christian I was convinced that the Bible had some fresh, insightful things to say on these issues and some powerful critiques to make, but I couldn’t find the language to say it.

What is “critical theory,” what does it do, and why should Christians have a biblical one? Nice easy question there! Okay, here’s the short version. A critical theory is a way of living in the world. It makes some things in the world viable (they make sense to you), some things visible (they stand out to you), and some things valuable (they attract you). And that’s what the Bible does too, as I try to show in the book. If the Bible doesn’t shape these things for you, something else will. You wouldn’t let some random person you’d never met furnish your house and manage your money, so why let some random ideas you’ve never scrutinized shape your outlook? If you want an example of what a biblical critical theory looks like in practice, read Augustine’s City of God. It’s a huge inspiration for what I’ve tried to do in Biblical Critical Theory

Q A Q A

Q A What led you to write your book? How does this book connect with your own life story?

What do you hope readers will take away from reading your book? My prayer is that Christians come away equipped and emboldened to show how the Bible speaks with an engaging, insightful, and often surprisingly fresh voice into the great social and cultural issues of our day. I’d love people to be energised not only to explain the Bible to the culture, but also to explain the culture through the Bible.

This book bridges that gap, showing how the Bible’s storyline from Genesis to Revelation helps us build a full-orbed Christian theory.

Biblical Critical Theory exists to critique what we think we know about reality and the social, political, and cultural structures in which we live. Thus, critical theory seeks to make visible the deep structures of a culture in order to expose and change them. Biblical Critical Theory exposes and evaluates the often-hidden assumptions and concepts that shape late-modern society, examining them through the lens of the biblical story running from Genesis to Revelation. With extensive diagrams and practical tools, Biblical Critical Theory shows how the patterns of the Bible’s storyline can provide incisive, fresh, and nuanced ways of intervening in today’s debates on everything from science, the arts, and politics to dignity, multiculturalism, and equality, showing Christians the moves to make and the tools to use in analyzing and engaging with all sorts of cultural artifacts and events, in a way that is both biblically faithful and culturally relevant. It is not enough for Christians to explain the Bible to the culture in which we live. We must also explain the culture in which we live within the framework and categories of the Bible. If Christians want to speak with a fresh, engaging, and dynamic voice in the marketplace of ideas today, we need to mine the unique treasures of the distinctive biblical storyline.

How the Bible’s Unfolding Story Makes Sense of Modern Life and Culture

A Biblical Critique of a Wayward Movement

Constantine R. Campbell American evangelicalism is at a crisis point.

Jesus v. Evangelicals is an insider’s critique of the evangelical movement according to its own rules. Since evangelicals regard themselves governed by the Bible, biblical scholar Constantine Campbell engages the Bible to critique evangelicals and to call out the problems within the contemporary evangelical movement. By revealing evangelical distortions of the Bible, this book seeks to restore the dignity of the Christian faith and to renew public interest in Jesus, while calling evangelicals back to his teaching.

Jesus v. Evangelicals

The naked grasping at political power at the expense of moral credibility has revealed a movement in disarray. Evangelicals are now faced with a quandary: will they double-down and continue along this perilous path, or will they stop, reflect, and change course? And while support of Donald Trump has produced the tipping point of the evangelical crisis, it is not by any means its only problem.

Constantine Campbell appeals to evangelicals to break free from the grid that has distorted their understanding of the Bible and to restore public respect for Christianity in spite of its misrepresentations by the evangelical church.

Evangelicals claim the Bible as the supreme authority in matters of faith. But in reality, it is particular readings of the Bible that govern evangelical faith. Some evangelical readings of the Bible can be highly selective. They distort the Bible’s teaching in crucial ways and often lead evangelicals to misguided attempts to relate to the world around them. Many Christians who once self-professed as “evangelicals” can no longer use the term of themselves because of what it has come to represent—power-mongering, divisiveness, judgementalism, hypocrisy, pride, greed. Some leave not just evangelicalism but Christianity for good.

Learning the Good Life Wisdom from the Great Hearts and Minds that Came Before Jessica Hooten Wilson and Jacob Stratman, editors

More Than a White Man’s Religion reveals:

• How challenging and sometimes confusing Bible passages and stories can be best understood to champion equality for ethnically diverse people and women

NEW

Though many today accuse Christianity of being a white, imperialistic religion, it is actually the source for cherished Western ideals of racial and gender equality. In More Than a White Man’s Religion , author and speaker Abdu Murray shares stories from the Bible and his own experiences as a global apologist, a member of an ethnic minority, a son of immigrants, and a former Muslim to show that the gospel message provides dignity and liberty to non-whites and women.

ALEXANDRA HUDSON, Civic Renaissance

We’ve lost ourselves. Disconnected from the past and uncertain about the future, we are anxious about what our lives will be and troubled by a nagging sense of meaninglessness. Adrift in the world, many Christians have their identity completely wrapped up in work and their definition of the “good life” is financial success. Fewer of are staying committed to the Christian faith, finding it difficult to reconcile their experience with their longings and desires. With so much uncertainty, where can we find a true vision of “the Good Life”?

• The ethnically diverse roots of biblical stories and passages that inspired some of the greatest social reforms in history

“A magnificent compilation of the timeless principles of human flourishing...this anthology is essential reading for the Christian student of any age”

ABDU MURRAY (JD, University of Michigan) is an apologist, leading debates, dialogues, and open forums around the world for churches, college campuses, and business and government gatherings. He hosts the podcast The Defense Rests . He is the author of many articles and three books, including Grand Central Question and Saving Truth “A must-read for anyone grappling with questions about the interaction of faith, race, and gender equality.”

• Ways believers can bring real and lasting change to our culture’s pervasive racial, ethnic, and gender equality issues by following Jesus’ and his followers’ examples Without overlooking the places where Christianity has failed to live up to its own ideals, Murray challenges the myth that Christianity is an oppressive, Western religion and shows believers how to better fulfill their God-given mandate to uphold the dignity of every human being.

Her current research and teaching focuses on the mind-body problem, the implications of Hempel’s Dilemma for contemporary physicalism, philosophy of religion, early analytic philosophy, and philosophy of action. Guide to Becoming a Christian Philosopher G.

“A must-read for Christians who want to have tools to think more deeply about their faith and to engage charitably in the face of disagreements.”

In part 2, Morris explores a sampling of philosophical topics relevant to the Christian faith. These chapters focus on two main arguments: the problem of evil and the moral argument for the existence of God. In evaluating these arguments, she introduces students to a variety of Christian philosophical positions, includ ing skeptical theism, the free will defense, Reformed epistemol ogy, Christian ethical theories, and a number of theodicies and defenses of the faith.

K. SCOTT OLIPHINT is professor of apologetics and systematic theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and is the author of numerous articles and books, including Covenantal Apologetics and Know Why You Believe . He is also coeditor of the twovolume Christian Apologetics Past and Present: A Primary Source Reader and a contributor to Four Views on Christianity and Philosophy “The Faithful Apologist comes from the biblically infused thought and heart of the careful reformed theologian Scott Oliphint . . . it provides meticulous theological reflection on how persuasion takes place by and through God’s word and the measured use of classical rhetorical realities. This is a foundational book, an indispensable prolegomenon to persuasion, and will serve the church well, not only in personal evangelism, but in the preaching of the gospel to a lost world!” R. KENT HUGHES, Senior Pastor Emeritus of College Church, Wheaton, Illinois As Christians, we’re called to give an answer for the hope we have in Christ. But too often, this task can feel like we’re doing PR work for God, limiting our apologetic work to a series of strategies and tac tics. In The Faithful Apologist , Scott Oliphint shows that this doesn’t have to be the case. He provides a cross-centered foundation for Christians to explain their faith in a welcoming and winsome man ner that avoids any burden to “sell” Christianity to nonDrawingChristians.from the rich tradition of Reformed apologetics, Oliphint proposes a marriage between wisdom and persuasion in faith con versations. He shows that, when our faith is grounded in the Triune God and his sovereignty, our attempts to defend it will grow more confident and convincing. Accessible and thoroughly rooted in Scripture, this book takes the anxiety out of apologetics by revealing that success is not measured in the number of minds we change, but in our faithfulness to God, the Divine Persuader.

CHRISTA L. MCKIRLAND, Logia International and Carey Baptist College Believing Philosophy introduces Christians to the tools and resources of philosophy, helping them understand, articulate, and defend their faith in an age of unbelief. In part 1, author Dolores G. Morris explains why Christians should read and study philosophy. She begins by introducing readers to the long tradition of Christian philosophy, going on to explain the basic resources of philosophical reasoning: the role and aim of reason; distinctions between truth, reason, and prov ability; learning to read like a philosopher; and the fundamentals of philosophical arguments.

Amid the crisis of authority in our modern and postmodern era, Christians need to be able to point to God’s revelation in the natural world in addition to defending God’s unique revelation in the Bible and in the person of Jesus ClassicalChrist.apologetics takes a two-step approach to commending the Christian picture of reality. First, arguments for the existence of God, such as those of natural theology, are employed to create common ground with people outside the household of the Christian faith and to provide intellectual support for Christians. Second, classical apologetics defends key items of Christian revelation, including the reliability of the Bible, the identity of the historical Jesus, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. In Knowledge of God in the World and the Word , authors Douglas Groothuis and Andrew Shepardson provide a simple introduction to classical apologetics that also addresses the most common objections to natural theology. Readers will discover in the book an easy point of entry into understanding why Christian beliefs about Jesus are true and rational. Further, the authors apply the power of classical apologetics to Christian ministry. Knowledge of God in the World and the Word Workbook

In addition, while the United States is still the country that sends the most international missionaries and many American churches support missionaries overseas, they often fail to understand the beliefs, practices, histories, and challenges Christians experience in other cultural contexts.

Michael J. Kruger “I thought Bully Pulpit would be a book every pastor and Christian leader ought to read. But I changed my mind: every Christian from pulpit to pew needs to read this wise and timely work—for the sake of the church and her people.”

SAM STORMS , lead pastor for preaching and vision at Bridgeway Church and author of Understanding Spiritual Gifts

Of course, most pastors and leaders are godly, wonderful people that don’t abuse their sheep. They shepherd their flocks gently and patiently. But we can’t ignore the growing number who do not. We need gentle shepherds now more than ever, and in Bully Pulpit , seminary president and biblical scholar Michael J. Kruger offers a unique perspective for both church leaders and church members on the problem of spiritual abuse, how to spot it, and how to handle it in the church.

It seems that some of the leaders we are producing—and, if we are honest, some of the leaders we are wanting—have characteristics that are either absent from, or even the very opposite of, the list of leadership characteristics laid down in Scripture.

“With prophetic courage and pastoral compassion, Mike Kruger has written an important book on a difficult subject. No one likes to think or talk about spiritual abuse, especially in the church, but if we neglect and ignore this very real problem and don’t find the right ways to confront it, woe to us. So if you’re a church leader who wants to shepherd the precious flock of God in the paradigm, pattern, and posture of the Chief Shepherd, Jesus Christ, pick up this must-read book, then listen and learn.”

The last decade has witnessed a rising number of churches wrecked by spiritual abuse—harsh, heavy-handed, domineering behavior from those in a position of spiritual authority. And high-profile cases are only a small portion of this widespread problem. Behind the scenes, there are many more cases of spiritual abuse that we will never hear about. Victims suffer in silence, not knowing where to turn.

Churches across the country are fl oundering, and many pastors are deeply discouraged. They work hard and with great sincerity, but their efforts don’t seem to be helping their people to fl ourish. Congregations are split over political issues. Faith is low. Finances are tight. Many leaders want to love their fl ocks but fi nd themselves in endless arguments with the people they are trying to serve.

In the 1950s and ‘60s, with desegregation on the horizon, Martin Luther King Jr. said, “I’ve come to believe that we are integrating into a burning house.”

Washington is not calling American evangelicalism to become something new. Rather, he challenges the movement to realize what it has always been in Christ. In Hybrid Church , James Emery White addresses the post-pandemic church in the US. Because of COVID-19, nearly every church in the US was forced to adapt to a quarantine and adopt new ministry strategies, including digital technologies they may have avoided before. White asks churches to see this as a positive and keep a dual physical and digital strategy to reach a post-Christian culture in a digital age. It is almost universally agreed that the future of the church is to be “hybrid” in nature, meaning both physical and digital, for the believer yet reaching out to a post-Christian world. This is only the third time in the history of the church that both the mission field and the way we communicate with that mission field have changed. This age has not been the only significant cultural development of our day. In terms of communicating to our mission field, there has also been a digital revolution.

In Bright Hope for Tomorrow , pastor Chris Davis points the way forward. Exploring the return of Jesus on the terms of the New Testament letters, this book looks at portraits of Jesus’ appearing, rhythms necessary to maintain expectancy (including gathering, fasting, and resting), and the practical transformation such anticipation effects. Bright Hope for Tomorrow is not the next new thing. Rather, it is a recovery of what has been lost by end-times studies that have veered into peripheral concerns. Join this return to the gospel center: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

TIM KELLER , founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church Hope is fuel. For Jesus’ disciples, the hope of seeing their risen Lord again, face to face, powered their endurance through persecution, their patience in discipling new believers, and their courage to renounce injustice and sinful passions. But have we set aside that fuel because the topic of Jesus’ return is mired in confusion and controversy? Many Christians have lost or overlooked the importance of the Lord’s appearing, resulting in a sluggish, ineffective faith. What if there is a way to recapture spiritual momentum? What if we could tap into the apostles’ longing to simply be in the presence of the resurrected Christ without getting entangled in date-setting or disagreements about the Millennium? And what if this fresh hope could drive our daily responses to temptation, affliction, discouragement, and life in a broken world?

Manuscripts go through three types of revision. The first is macro editing. Usually, the acquisitions editor performs this task. As you might have guessed, a macro edit examines your manuscript at a macro level. What’s your main thesis, and do you prove it? Do your chapters all help build your argument, or does a chapter stray too far off topic? Perhaps you need an extra chapter to help prove your point. Add a section here, cut a paragraph there, rend this chapter asunder. The intent of the macro edit is to make sure you have submitted exactly one well-argued, well-articulated, and well-structured book. Next, your manuscript will be copyedited. At Zondervan, this step is often completed by a production editor. While the macro editor is looking at the big picture, the copyeditor is looking at the details. Anything a paragraph or smaller is the domain of the copyeditor. Are the facts right, and do you provide all the right sources? Do your sentences have dangling modifiers? Does chapter 7 overuse the word cornucopia? Are you a too-manycommas person or a not-enough-commas person? (This is a trick question. Because you’re reading the essay at the end of an academic catalog, I know you’re a too-many-commas person. I was one too.) The intent of the copyedit is to make sure your sentences are clear and concise, pristine and perfect, ready to be read by your readers.

The final type of manuscript revision I’ll mention today is proofreading. The job of the proofreader is to fix those pesky typos, errors, and mistakes that persist in your book. This unsung hero of the publishing world isn’t worried about commas unless those commas are typos. The proofreader isn’t looking at sentence structure unless that sentence is nonsensical. When you misspell the name of your own doktorvater and forget the colon in the title of your previous book, the proofreader will help you save face. Sending your manuscript to a publisher can feel like sending your eldest child off to her first day of kindergarten. Sure, she’s ready. She’s intelligent, thoughtful, a leader, someone who thankfully takes after your spouse. You’ve sat her down, prepared her for some of the trials she might face, explained as much as you could. But if you’re anything like me, as soon as your child leaves your sight, anxiety begins to gnaw at you. Not so long ago she was an infant. Did you prepare her as best you could? Similar doubts, anxieties, and uncertainties can accompany manuscript submission. Like a parent with a kindergartener, you may have spent the last five years raising it—from infancy to maturity, with research and contemplation, writing and revising, coffee and more coffee. Your project is in the best shape you can muster. And then, with the press of a button, your work is in the hands of someone else, some mysterious editor who might cut your favorite chapter or suggest extensive rewrites. Who is influencing your manuscript? What’s going to happen to five years of your life’s work? Alas, I can’t guarantee that you won’t have to rewrite anything, but I can offer you some insider knowledge. Eventually, after some serious prying, my daughter told me what happened on her first day of kindergarten. Knowing what she was doing and who was teaching her helped ease my anxiety.
