The start of last fall marked some notable changes both for me professionally and for Zondervan Academic. In September 2022, I celebrated my twentieth anniversary with Zondervan, a milestone that still baffles me. A month later, in October, I was appointed Vice President and Publisher for Zondervan Academic.

Many have asked me since what this appointment entails and whether I have replaced Stan Gundry, whose letter you have read on this very page for decades. But what most of our authors and readers do not realize is that the position I have assumed has never before existed. While in this catalog, our website, and at various academic conferences, we have presented ourselves under the Zondervan Academic name and current logo since 2007, Zondervan Academic was not formally recognized as an official imprint of Zondervan until 2019, which opened the door to the role I now have the privilege of assuming while continuing to report to Stan as our SVP and Group Publisher for both Zondervan Academic and Zondervan Reflective.

I do not take up this new responsibility lightly. While the imprint itself is young, Zondervan’s longest and deepest roots are securely anchored in academic publishing. The first book Zondervan ever published in 1931 was an academic work—Abraham Kuyper’s Women of the Old Testament and it is still in print. Since then, Zondervan went on to publish such world-renowned twentieth-century scholars and theologians as J. B. Lightfoot, William Shedd, F. F. Bruce, and Karl Barth. Throughout our ninety-two-year history, we have been privileged to partner with the scholarly community to develop Christ-honoring resources in service of the academy and the church worldwide. Since the turn of the twenty-first century, Zondervan Academic has entered a new era as we renewed our commitment to academic publishing. This recommitment has shown itself in amplified efforts to reengage in publishing academic works at a higher level of scholarship and publishing for the professional needs and interests of scholars, not solely for the classroom. Publishing for the classroom remains a high value and priority in the Zondervan Academic publishing program, but we have also actively sought to acquire and produce quality academic reference works and monographs. Ultimately, in everything we publish, our deepest desire is to reflect the breadth, both theological and global, of the great Christian tradition and the diversity of the worldwide Body of Christ. This mission compels us not only to seek out the great content that is so foundational to who we are, but to pursue proactively the voices of women, people of color, and scholars from the Majority World for the enrichment and growth of the whole Church. This missional lens is one we apply to every book that eventually makes it into the pages of this catalog before you. I hope that this catalog, and each one that follows, increasingly reveals the fruit of the hopes and dreams that have driven and energized us for the better part of the last two decades.

I am honored to have the opportunity to lead the Zondervan Academic enterprise into the future.

Warmly,

Ancient Literature for New Testament Studies

History of the Quests for the

Early New Testament Apocrypha

Volume 9

To understand the New Testament well, it is important to study the larger world surrounding it, and one of the primary avenues for this exploration is through reading related ancient texts. But this task is daunting for scholars and novices alike given the sheer size of the ancient literary corpora. The Ancient Literature for New Testament Studies series aims to bridge this gap by introducing the key ancient texts that form the cultural, historical, and literary context for the study of the New Testament.

Early New Testament Apocrypha offers an entry point into the corpus of early Christian apocryphal literature through twenty-eight texts or groups of texts. While the majority of the texts fall within the first four centuries CE, and therefore are useful for uncovering the earliest interpretations assigned to the New Testament, select later texts serve as reminders of how the meanings of New Testament texts continued to develop in subsequent centuries. Each essay covers introductory matters, a summary of content, interpretive issues, key passages for New Testament studies and their significance, and a select bibliography.

Whether you are a scholar looking to familiarize yourself with a new corpus of texts or a novice seeking to undertake a serious contextualized study of the New Testament, this is an ideal reference work for you.

Edwards (PhD, University of St. Andrews) is professor of religious studies at St. Francis College, Brooklyn. Craig A. Evans (PhD, Claremont; DHabil, Budapest) is the John Bisagno Distinguished Professor of Christian Origins at Houston Baptist University Cecilia Wassén (PhD, McMaster University) is senior lecturer of New Testament at Uppsala University, Sweden.

“This series is a valuable tool for those teaching the New Testament. It puts the New Testament texts into conversation with texts from their environment and makes a deeper understanding of them possible.”

YARBRO COLLINS, Buckingham Professor Emerita of New Testament Criticism and Interpretation, Yale University

“The ALNTS series provides a comprehensive survey and introduction of literature from the ancient world that is relevant to the interpretation of the New Testament. It spans Jewish, Christian, and Greco-Roman literature and includes papyri and other non-literary evidence. There is nothing like this available hitherto. This is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the New Testament.”

—JOHN J. COLLINS, Holmes Professor Emeritus of Old Testament Criticism and Interpretation, Yale University

Ancient Literature for New Testament Studies is a 10-volume series that introduces key ancient texts that form the cultural, historical, and literary context for the study of the New Testament. Neither too technical to be used by students nor too thin on interpretive information to be useful for serious study of the New Testament, this series provides a much-needed resource for understanding the New Testament in its Jewish, Greco-Roman, and early Christian contexts.

A History of the Quests for the Historical Jesus, Volumes 1 and 2

“We do not know where we are or where we are going if we do not know where we have been, and these two sprawling volumes do just that: they take us on a fascinating tour of our field’s past and present. Given the scope of Brown’s research, even long-time adepts will learn much”

Jesus of Nazareth ranks among the most important figures in history. Yet contemporary scholarship finds little common agreement about his identity. It is accepted generally that there were three quests for the historical Jesus. The first was characterized by Albert Schweitzer and came to be called the “Old Quest,” while the second was conceived of as the “New Quest” of the 1950s. The interval between the Old and New Quests was facetiously called the “No Quest.” This three-quest history in fact was due more to the ingenuity of publishers than to the scholars engaged in the enterprise. But in the 1970s and 1980s, another quest emerged, often informally referred to as the “Third Quest.” This quest was driven largely by scholars in search of the historical, social, and religious setting of Jesus and his followers. The Dead Sea Scrolls, archaeological findings, papyri, and other material remains came to play an important part in this newer research.

A History of the Quests for the Historical Jesus is an extensive two-volume reassessment of the situation, beginning with the evolution of orthodoxy and quests before Schweitzer’s, through the Nazi attempt to make Jesus an Aryan critic of Judaism, and to today’s ongoing questions about criteria, methods, and specific issues. The late Colin Brown brings his scholarly prowess in both theology and biblical studies to bear on the subject of the quests, examining not only the historical, exegetical, critical nuts and bolts of the debate but also its philosophical and theological underpinnings. Instead of seeking a bedrock of “facts,” Brown stresses the role of hermeneutics in formulating questions and seeking answers. Whether we realize it or not, facts themselves are shaped by our hermeneutics and belief systems.

Sophisticated in both its philosophical-theological and historical-exegetical dimensions, this new survey and analysis of the quests for the historical Jesus makes a landmark contribution to this central topic in biblical studies.

Colin Brown was almost finished with the manuscript at the time of his passing in 2019. Brought to its final form by Craig A. Evans, this book promises to become the definitive history and assessment of the quests for the historical Jesus.

Volume 1 covers the period from the beginnings of Christianity to the end of World War II. Volume 2 covers the period from the postwar era through contemporary debates.

COLIN BROWN (1932–2019; DD, University of Nottingham; PhD, University of Bristol) was senior professor of systematic theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He taught and wrote on the historical Jesus, Christology, philosophical theology, New Testament theology, history and criticism, and miracles. He served as editor of The New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and was the author of several books, including Miracles and the Critical Mind, History and Faith, and Jesus in European Protestant Thought

CRAIG A. EVANS (PhD, Claremont; DHabil, Budapest) is the John Bisagno Distinguished Professor of Christian Origins at Houston Baptist University. Author and editor of more than ninety books and hundreds of articles and reviews, Evans has lectured at major universities worldwide and has regularly appeared on Dateline NBC, CBC, CTV, Day of Discovery, and in many documentaries aired on BBC, The Discovery Channel, History Channel, History Television, and National Geographic Channel speaking on the historical Jesus, the New Testament Gospels, archaeology, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Bible.

Revelation for the Rest of Us

A Prophetic Call to Follow Jesus as a Dissident Disciple Scot McKnight with Cody Matchett

“This is the most powerful interpretation of Revelation I have ever read, reorienting us away from bizarre prophecies and fiction bestsellers back to the truth of the gospel. You do not want to miss it.”

BETH ALLISON BARR, bestselling author of The Making of Biblical Womanhood

Finally, someone makes sense of the confoundingly beautiful mystery that is the book of Revelation.”

LYNN H. COHICK, provost/dean of academic affairs, Northern Seminary

“This challenging but also pastoral book is a must-read for anyone concerned about the new forces of Babylon confronting the church and the world today.”

MICHAEL J. GORMAN, St. Mary’s Seminary & University

“A fascinating and engrossing book about one of the most puzzling—and hopeful—books of the Christian Bible.”

MIROSLAV VOLF, coauthor of The Home of God

The biblical Book of Revelation frustrates and fascinates many people with its imagery and apocalyptic tone.

In Revelation for the Rest of Us, world renowned New Testament scholar and author Scot McKnight explores the timeless message of Revelation and how it speaks to us today with a courageous challenge to be faithful witnesses to Jesus while standing against the ever-present reality of worldly authorities. The writer, John, stimulates the imagination to see the world differently, through the eyes of God, presenting a “divine politics” that subverts the sinful patterns of governments, empires, and those in power.

McKnight addresses the popular misconceptions about the book, explaining what John means by the images of dragons, lambs, and beasts, and how the symbolism of Revelation speaks powerfully to the present day--though not in the way most people think. Drawing from the latest scholarship, he presents an understanding of Revelation for anyone interested in deepening their personal study of the Bible as well as preachers looking to communicate this timeless message today.

SCOT MCKNIGHT is professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary in Lisle, Illinois. He is the author of more than eighty books, including the award-winning The Jesus Creed, The King Jesus Gospel, A Fellowship of Differents, One.Life, The Blue Parakeet, and Kingdom Conspiracy. He maintains an active blog at www.christianitytoday.com/scot-mcknight.

CODY MATCHETT is a pastor and teacher from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He is the former college chaplain at Briercrest College, works with several organizations across Canada, and is currently completing an MA in New Testament at Northern Seminary. He plans to pursue a doctorate in New Testament.

A Theology of Paul and His Letters

Biblical Theology of the New Testament Douglas

“A Theology of Paul and his Letters is at the same time both panoramic in scope and attentive to the details of individual words and phrases. Moo draws on a vast wealth of scholarship, interacting fairly and charitably with others, and invariably clarifying not just Paul’s thought but also his emphases and balance. I can recommend it with pleasure –and with envy of the learning and good judgment evident throughout this book.

SIMON GATHERCOLE, professor of New Testament and Early Christianity, University of Cambridge This highly anticipated volume gives pastors, scholars, and all serious students of the New Testament exactly what they need for in-depth study and engagement with one of Christian history’s most formative thinkers and writers. A Theology of Paul and His Letters is a landmark study of the apostle’s writings by one of the world’s leading Pauline scholars Douglas J. Moo. Fifteen years in the making, Moo’s award-winning volume will serve readers as a go-to resource for decades to come.

15 New Testament Words of Life

A New Testament Theology for Real Life

DOUGLAS J. MOO (PhD, University of St. Andrews) is the Kenneth T. Wessner Professor of New Testament at Wheaton College. His work centers on understanding the text of the New Testament and its application today. He has written extensively in several commentary series, including the NIV Application Commentary and the New International Commentary on the New Testament. With is son Jonathan Moo, he coauthored Creation Care: A Biblical Theology of the Natural World, part of Zondervan’s Biblical Theology for Life series.

“While the New Testament is full of depth and complexity, its most important ideas have a profound simplicity to them. In this collection of word studies, Nijay Gupta explores foundational themes in New Testament theology, but in a very accessible way. If you’re looking to deepen your understanding of some of the most essential concepts in Christian belief, this book is for you!”

TIM MACKIE, cofounder of the Bible Project

“This book will find wide use in the classroom, in churches, and in the lives of disciples young and old who want their faith to shape their lives as they are seeking the good of the world.”

In 15 New Testament Words of Life, biblical scholar Nijay Gupta explores some of the most important words found in the New Testament: righteousness, gospel, forgiveness, life, cross, faith, grace, fellowship, hope, salvation, peace, religion, holiness, love, and witness. Sadly, these “weighty words” have become stale from overexposure (for example, “love”) or their life-giving meaning has become vague and unclear because they are not words that frequent our everyday conversation (for example, “holiness”). Gupta makes the meaning of these key New Testament terms clear and concrete by connecting them not only to the big picture of New Testament theology but also to the things we care about most—friendship, joy and fulfillment, love and loss, suffering and pain.

NIJAY K. GUPTA (PhD, University of Durham) is professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. He is author of numerous books, including Paul and the Language of Faith, A Beginner’s Guide to New Testament Studies, and commentaries on Galatians, Philippians, Colossians, and 1–2 Thessalonians. He is the founder and blogger at the popular biblioblog Crux Sola

Reading Hebrews in Context

The Sermon and Second Temple Judaism

Ben C. Blackwell, John K. Goodrich, and Jason Maston, Editors

HARO LD W. ATTRIDGE, Sterling Professor of Divinity, emeritus, Yale University Divinity School

Going beyond an introduction that merely surveys historical events and theological themes, this textbook examines individual passages in Second Temple Jewish literature in order to illuminate the ideas and emphases of Hebrews’s varied discourses. Following the rhetorical progression of Hebrews, each chapter in this textbook (1) pairs a major unit of Hebrews with one or more sections of a thematically related Jewish text, (2) introduces and explores the historical and theological nuances of the comparator text, and (3) shows how the ideas in the comparator text illuminate those expressed in Hebrews.

In addition to the focused comparison provided in the essays, the book offers other student-friendly features that will help them engage broader discussions, including an introductory chapter that familiarizes students with the world and texts of Second Temple Judaism and a glossary of important terms. The end of each chapter contains a list of other thematically relevant Second Temple Jewish texts recommended for further study and a focused bibliography pointing students to critical editions and higher-level discussions in scholarly literature they might use to undertake their own comparative studies.

BEN C. BLACKWELL (PhD, University of Durham) is professor of early Christianity at Houston Theological Seminary.

JOHN K. GOODRICH (PhD, University of Durham) is professor of Bible at Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Illinois, and adjunct professor at Compass Bible Institute, Aliso Viejo, California.

The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets

Imagining the Minor Prophets’ World John Goldingay

“Disciplined imagination is a powerful tool in bringing the scriptures to life and John Goldingay puts his well-informed imagination to work here in ways that entertain and educate in equal measure.”

“Goldingay takes the often overlooked Minor Prophets and brings clarity not only to their message but also to the tensions they provoked.”

SHANNON LAMB, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship USA

For many Christians reading the Old Testament, trying to understand Israel’s prophets is like listening to just one side of a phone conversation—you only get half the idea of it.

In The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets, John Goldingay uncovers the questions behind the prophets’ answers that make their meaning and relevance intelligible to us. Written as a series of imaginary letters to the twelve Minor Prophets, It asks the kinds of questions that Hosea, Micah, Zechariah, and others were answering. The letters make clear the issues these prophets of Israel were dealing with or deliver the news they were responding to in their Old Testament writings. Here is an imaginative, fun, and engaging way for students, pastors, and all serious Bible readers get a better grip on what is happening in these often misunderstood biblical books.

JOHN GOLDINGAY (PhD, University of Nottingham; DD, Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth) is professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary, but lives in Oxford, England. His numerous books include An Introduction to the Old Testament, A Reader’s Guide to the Bible, Reading Jesus’s Bible, and commentaries on Psalms, Isaiah, and Daniel. He has also authored Biblical Theology, the three-volume Old Testament Theology, and the seventeen-volume Old Testament for Everyone series, and has published a translation of the entire Old Testament called The First Testament: A New Translation.

Five Views of Christ in the Old Testament

Brian J. Tabb and Andrew M. King, editors; John Goldingay, Tremper Longman III, Havilah Dharamraj, Jason S. DeRouchie, and Craig A. Carter, contributors

Five Views of Christ in the Old Testament is the first book to bring together in conversation the major views on how the Old Testament points to Christ. Contributors and views include:

• The First Testament Priority View (John Goldingay)

• The Christotelic View (Tremper Longman III)

• The Reception-Centered Intertextual View (Havilah Dharamraj)

• The Redemptive-Historical Christocentric View (Jason DeRouchie)

• The Premodern View (Craig Carter)

Each contributor presents their preferred methodology, showing readers how their interpretive approach best explains the biblical data. Authors provide case studies of various Old Testament passages that equip readers to better compare the strengths and weaknesses of each approach.

BRIAN J. TABB (PhD, London School of Theology) is academic dean and professor of biblical studies at Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and general editor of Themelios.

ANDREW M. KING (PhD, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is assistant professor of biblical studies at Midwestern Seminary and Spurgeon College in Kansas City, Missouri.

Torah Story, Second Edition

An Apprenticeship on the Pentateuch Gary Edward Schnittjer

“This book is brilliant. As someone who loves the Torah and who cares about effective pedagogy, I am so impressed with Torah Story. Gary Schnittjer is clearly a master of the subject and treats it faithfully, thoughtfully, and thoroughly, as a Christian who reveres the Hebrew Bible.”

ELIZABETH W. D. GROVES, lecturer in Biblical Hebrew, Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia

“Gary Schnittjer’s Torah Story is a rich resource for studying the Pentateuch, not only in surveying its content and major themes, or in providing helpful charts and illustrations, but by teaching readers how to read and enjoy the Torah for themselves. Torah Story is a superb guide to the abiding message, composition, and literary beauty of the Pentateuch, which I highly recommend for both classroom and personal study.”

L. MICHAEL MORALES, professor of biblical studies, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary

The gospel story begins in Torah. What culminates at Golgotha starts with the rebellion in the garden. The Torah’s story can be framed as a question: How will the word of God overcome the human revolution?

Torah Story, Second Edition offers a student-friendly introduction to the redemptive narrative housed in the first five books of the Bible. Every main chapter introduces a section of Torah with attention to its basic structure. This is followed by another look at how this portion of Torah connects to the rest of the Christian Bible.

The dynamic design includes opportunities in every chapter to make the most of Torah study including:

• Helps for getting started (focus questions, key terms, outline)

• An interactive workshop with challenge questions and advanced questions

• Suggestions for research projects

• Next steps for further study

A refreshingly new approach to the Torah—neither an introduction nor a commentary—Torah Story, Second Edition provides an apprenticeship on the Old Testament’s first five books. It also provides a model of how to read Scripture intertextually with an eye toward the New Testament gospels.

EDWARD SCHNITTJER is the award-winning author of Old Testament Use of Old Testament and distinguished professor of Old Testament in the School of Divinity at Cairn University.

A Student-Friendly Apprenticeship on the Redemptive Narrative Housed in the Bible’s First Five Books

Updates to the Second Edition:

• Every chapter streamlined and revised—some lightly, some extensively, and most in between

• Notes and bibliographies updated throughout

• New images and interior design

• American Stories and Torah Story activities moved to

“It is difficult to improve on an already superb work, but Gary Schnittjer has done just this in the second edition of Torah Story. The introductory chapter, which has been substantially revised and is now even more helpful to the student, explains how to read the Torah in light of how biblical narrative works. Then in the remaining chapters Schnittjer masterfully models his approach to narrative by offering an astute theological reading of the Torah. Throughout, the reader finds many invaluable insights into the Torah’s literary features and intertextual allusions, which is exactly what we would expect given Schnittjer’s expertise in these areas. I cannot recommend Torah Story highly enough!”

BENJAMIN J. NOONAN, associate professor of Old Testament and Hebrew, Columbia International University

“Schnittjer’s Torah Story is a refreshingly unique textbook on the Pentateuch that moves beyond summarizing the content of these books to tracing their literary strategies, intertextual connections, and enduring significance as Christian Scripture. This volume—especially the second edition— offers a new generation of readers a sophisticated, accessible, and indispensable introduction to Scripture’s foundational narratives.”

MICHELLE KNIGHT, PhD, assistant professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

“I have assigned Torah Story in my Pentateuch course for many years because of Gary Schnittjer’s engaging approach to Pentateuch studies. What I love most are his insightful ‘Readings,’ attending to theological interpretation and narrative artistry, and his Another Look, brimming with fresh observations about interconnections within and between biblical books. Augmenting these strengths, the second edition of Torah Story is enhanced throughout with updated research, tables, images, and interactive workshops that make an effective textbook even better for anyone seeking an apprenticeship on the Torah.”

KENNETH C. WAY, professor of Old Testament and Semitics, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University

“The second edition of Torah Story offers an invitation to the reader to become an apprentice of the Pentateuch. As a skilled guide with decades of experience in the classroom, Schnittjer knows how to lead students down the path of discovery through the inductive study of Scripture and shows us how he does it. This volume is ideally suited for professors who want to turn their course into an interactive workshop. Students will enjoy its thought-provoking questions and suggestions for research projects. Highly recommended!”

GORDON JOHNSTON, professor of Old Testament, Dallas Theological Seminary

“This second edition of Torah Story retains all the best features of the first edition and makes them better. I value this textbook for how it trains students to read biblical narrative in all of its rich design and intertextuality. The second edition enhances this key characteristic through updated and clarified discussion and bibliographic entries. The additional and higher quality pictures enrich the reading experience, and students will appreciate the slightly shorter text, editing that made the writing clearer without losing any necessary content. Students will find Torah Story to be a beneficial resource for study long after their course is over.”

MEGAN C. ROBERTS, assistant professor of Old Testament, Prairie College

The Scripture and Hermeneutics Seminar, 25th Anniversary

Retrospect and Prospect

Craig G. Bartholomew, David J. H. Beldman, Amber Bowen, and William Olhausen, editors

For twenty-five years, the Scripture and Hermeneutics Seminar has produced a steady stream of influential, global, diverse, ecumenical and world-class research and publications that have impacted a generation of scholars now in mid-career, teaching or ministering at various universities, seminaries, divinity schools, or churches around the globe. The volumes of the seminar have resourced countless classrooms and have been cited thousands of times in scholarly research and in the pulpits and Bible studies worldwide.

In celebration of the 25th year of the seminar (1997–2022), this compendium reflects on its work and impact. It offers new essays that chart the value of the seminar for biblical interpretation and the needs of biblical interpretation in the future, and includes stories from the formative SAHS community. This volume distills the work of the seminar for a new generation of students, opening to them a gateway to the community and to the resources developed over the past two decades.

Tightly organized, carefully arranged and cross-referenced, this volume:

• Highlights the work of a significant movement in biblical interpretation in the academy

• Charts a path of biblical interpretation from the past to the future

• Helps readers understand the philosophical and theological commitments that undergird biblical interpretation

• Helps readers construct a theological hermeneutics that yields a deeper, richer reading of Scripture

• Introduces readers to stories of the seminar from scholars and ministers impacted by it

This celebratory volume not only gives a unique perspective on the architecture of biblical interpretation in the first quarter of the twenty-first century, but it is offered in hope of preparing fertile soil for the next generation of women and men to cultivate biblical interpretation for years to come.

The volume features essays by Craig Bartholomew, David Beldman, Amber L. Bowen, Susan Bubbers, Jean-Louis Chrétien, Havilah Dharamraj, Bo Lim, Murray Rae, J. Aaron Simmons, Anthony Thiselton, and John Wyatt.

A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners & Pros

J. TORRANCE, University of St. Andrews, Scotland

A Guided Tour of One of the Greatest Theological Works of the Twentieth Century

Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics is considered by many to be the most important theological work of the twentieth century, and for many people, reading it, or at least understanding its contents and arguments, is a lifelong goal. Yet its enormous size, at over 12,000 pages (in English translations) and enough print volumes to fill an entire shelf, make reading it a daunting prospect for seasoned theologians and novices alike.

Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics for Everyone, Volume 2—The Doctrine of God helps bridge the gap for would-be Karl Barth readers from beginners to professionals by offering an introduction to Barth’s theology and thought like no other. User-friendly and creative, this guide helps readers get the gist, significance, and relevance of what Barth intended for the church . . . to restore the focus of theology and revitalize the practices of the church.

Each section contains insights for pastors, new theologians, professionals, and ordinary people including:

• Summaries of the section

• Contextual considerations

• And other visually informative features that reinforce the main points of the Barth’s thought

In addition, each volume features the voices of authors from different academic disciplines who contribute brief reflections on the value of Church Dogmatics for creative discovery in their disciplines. Volume 2 reflections include:

• Chris Tilling (biblical studies)

• David Guretzki (systematic theology)

• Earl Palmer (pastors)

• Wyatt Houtz (ordinary people)

• Andrew Howie (mental health)

• James Houston (spiritual formation)

• Ross Hastings (science)

Essential Teachings of the Christian Faith

Wayne Grudem; Edited by Alexander Grudem NOW AVAILABLE

“Alister McGrath invariably combines enormous scholarship with an accessible and engaging style.”

ROWAN WILLIAMS, former Archbishop of Canterbury

Theology is the study of the nature of God and of religious belief. But why should that matter to us? What’s the point of theology?

In this wonderfully accessible book, renowned theologian Alister McGrath answers those questions and explores the depth and breadth of what theology can bring to our lives. Drawing on insights from his experience of coming to Christianity from atheism, this exhilarating and enlightening volume reveals how theology can help us grow in wisdom, contribute to our wellbeing, spark our innate sense of wonder, and, above all, grow in faith and love as we draw ever closer to the divine.

Ideal for new and seasoned Christians who want to engage more deeply with their faith, as well as those who are puzzled by spiritual matters and curious to find out more, What’s the Point of Theology? will open your eyes to all that theology has to offer—a wiser understanding of what really matters, a richer vision of the good life, a deeper appreciation of the beauty of nature, and an avenue to strengthen your faith and relationship with God.

Systematic theology is no abstract term. It’s an approach to finding answers every Christian needs to know. The second edition of Bible Doctrine takes a widely used upper-level textbook on systematic theology and makes it accessible. Abridged from the second edition of Wayne Grudem’s award-winning Systematic Theology, Bible Doctrine covers the same essentials of the faith, giving you a firm grasp on seven key topics.

New Studies in Dogmatics series seeks
riches of Christian doctrine for the sake of contemporary theological renewal. Following in the tradition of G. C. Berkouwer,s Studies in Dogmatics, this series will provide thoughtful, concise, and readable treatments of major theological topics, expressing the biblical, creedal, and confessional shape of Christian doctrine for a contemporary evangelical audience. The editors and contributors share a common conviction that the way forward in constructive systematic theology lies in building upon the foundations laid in the church’s historic understanding of the Word of God as professed in its creeds, councils, and confessions, and by its most trusted teachers.

Timothy Keller

His Spiritual and Intellectual Formation

Collin Hansen

“Here is the story of a man possessed of unusual native gifts of analysis and synthesis, of the home and family life that has shaped him, of people both long dead and contemporary whose insights he has taken hold of in the interests of communicating the gospel, and also of the twists and turns of God’s providence in his life. These pages may well have been titled Becoming Tim Keller. That “becoming” has been neither a quick nor an easy road. But Collin Hansen’s account of it will be as challenging to readers as it is instructive.”

SINCLAIR FERGUSON, author of The Whole Christ

“In our time, few Christian leaders have a vision of the faith that is as recognizable—and as globally influential—as Tim Keller. In this engaging book, Collin Hansen charts the fascinating range of figures whose writings and examples influenced that vision and guides the reader through a life spent exploring and distilling the best of the Christian tradition. By humanizing a towering figure, Hansen challenges his own audience to learn from the deliberateness that marks Keller’s own journey in the faith. Quite simply, I could not put this book down.”

“Tim Keller has been an immensely wise mentor for many of us. This book is a rich account of the sources of his spiritual formation, of the people who helped lead him to them, and of the dynamics contributing to the successes of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City.”

GEORGE MARSDEN, author of Jonathan Edwards: A Life Millions have read books and listened to sermons by Timothy Keller. But which people and what events shaped his own thinking and spiritual growth? With unfettered access to Keller’s personal notes and sermons—as well as exclusive interviews with family members and longtime friends—Collin Hansen gives you unprecedented understanding of one of the 21st century’s most influential church leaders.

Spend any time around Timothy Keller and you’ll learn what he’s reading, what he’s learning, what he’s seeing. The story of Timothy Keller is the story of his spiritual and intellectual influences, from the woman who taught him how to read the Bible to the professor who taught him to preach Jesus from every text to the philosopher who taught him to see beneath society’s surface.

For the first time, Hansen introduces readers to Keller’s early years: the home where he learned to tell stories from the trees, the church where he learned to care for souls, and the city that lifted him to the international fame he never wanted.

This is the untold story of the people, the books, the lectures, and ultimately the God who formed and shaped the life of Timothy Keller.

MATTHEW BARRETT

Q There are many books on the history and theology of the Reformation. What makes The Reformation as Renewal unique?

A The key is that word “renewal.” Too often approaches to the Reformation blame the Reformers for schism and secularism, as if the Reformers were carriers of a virus that infected future centuries with the symptoms of modernity (and postmodernity). Meanwhile, others celebrate the Reformation as a revolution, as if the Reformers intended a clean break from the Great Tradition before them so that they could begin a new church otherwise lost since the apostles.

Both interpretations have monopolized the conversation. Unfortunately, Protestants themselves have only fed these caricatures. In that sense, my fresh intellectual and theological history of the Reformation is an attempt to save us Protestants… from ourselves! Rather than capitulating to caricatures, I summon the voices of the Reformers. What do we hear? A constant chorus, all singing a similar tune: the Reformation was an attempt to renew the Christian faith. Or, as the subtitle of my book says, the Reformers were resolved to retrieve the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church. What’s so unique about this book? I not only give the reader a front row seat to the sixteenth century, but I invite the reader behind the curtain of the Middle Ages to reveal a most-neglected surprise: the Reformers not only saw themselves in continuity with the patristics but even key medieval scholastics. Although they recognized points of discontinuity in soteriology and ecclesiology, they saw themselves in broad continuity in countless other ways, from the doctrine of God to Christology to eschatology. Far from a betrayal of the church, the Reformers saw themselves as truly catholic.

Q The standard histories depict the Reformation as a break from the past, even though many of the Reformers conceived themselves as operating in continuity with it. What has led to this misunderstanding?

A Many factors. But I will mention one. Protestants have little acquaintance with the Middle Ages, as evident in how few evangelical schools offers classes on this period of church history. Our curriculum is often driven by our outlook on history. We buy into that caricature which says everything medieval must be part of the “Dark Ages.” However, the Middle Ages was a vast period of diverse representatives, spanning almost half of church history. Furthermore, an honest look at the Reformers reveals a different posture. For example, take the Scholastics. The Reformers did not consider their program a rejection of all Scholastics but a response to certain late medieval Scholastics. For instance, at the genesis of the German Reformation Martin Luther reacted against the nominalist, voluntarist soteriology of the via moderna propagated by late medieval scholastics like William of Ockham and Gabriel Biel. As the Reformation matured, the Reformed tradition in particular saw itself as a renewal of the Augustinian-Thomistic heritage that evolved from the patristics and matriculated with the scholastics of the High Middle Ages. I merely observe the variegated ways sixteenth and seventeenth century Reformed Scholastics retrieved Thomas Aquinas to further solidify their catholicity. Furthermore, even when the Reformers responded to Scholastics across the board, they did not intend a wholesale departure, but offered a critique on those doctrines most relevant to the polemics of the sixteenth century (e.g., justification, papacy). As for the rest of the Christian faith, the Reformers considered themselves nothing less than faithful heirs. Thankfully, historians from David Steinmetz to Richard Muller have outlined these points of continuity. It’s time Protestants listen. If not, we remove ourselves from the Reformation itself and sentence our future to an identity far more in line with the radicals that the Reformers considered unorthodox.

Q Why is this book particularly well-suited for the classroom?

A I have labored for clarity so that students can enter the deep waters of the sixteenth century without feeling lost in myriad theological debates. To that end, I’ve let the Reformers speak for themselves as much as possible. I’ve also included sidebars that keep the story of the Reformation interesting, giving the student permission to explore facets that could be promising for further research of their own. The book does not pretend to be exhaustive, but it is expansive, covering the major pockets of the Reformation across Europe. In addition to meeting familiar names (Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, etc.), students will also be introduced to those names that deserve more notoriety (Melanchthon, Bucer, Bullinger, Vermigli, etc.). The Reformation cannot be confined to Luther or Calvin, as important as they both were.

The Reformation as Renewal

Retrieving the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church

Matthew Barrett

“This is a ‘must-read’…”

MICHAEL HORTON, Westminster Seminary California

“A fascinating overview....”

HERMAN J. SELDERHUIS, Theological University Apeldoorn

“Barrett’s thesis is stimulating and his arguments robust.”

JOEL R. BEEKE, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

“Barrett’s study is a tour de force…”

SCOTT MANETSCH, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

The Reformation as Renewal: Retrieving the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church is a fresh, holistic, and eye-opening history of one of the most significant turning points in Christianity. Over against interpretations that blame the Reformation for secularism and schism, Matthew Barrett demonstrates that the Reformation was at its core a renewal of evangelical catholicity. Rather than breaking with the church, the reformers saw themselves as faithful stewards of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church preserved across history.

By listening to the Reformers’ own voices, The Reformation as Renewal helps readers explore:

• The Reformation’s roots in patristic and medieval thought and its response to late medieval innovations

• Key philosophical and theological differences between Scholasticism in the High Middle Ages and deviations in the Late Middle Ages

• The many ways sixteenth and seventeenth century Protestants critically appropriated Scholastics like Thomas Aquinas

• The Reformation’s response to the charge of novelty by an appeal to evangelical catholicity

• Common caricatures of the Reformation that mistake the Reformers as radicals and revolutionaries

• The spread of Reformation catholicity across Europe, as seen in first and second-generation leaders from Luther and Melanchthon in Wittenberg to Zwingli and Bullinger in Zurich to Bucer and Calvin in Strasbourg and Geneva to Tyndale, Cranmer, and Jewel in England, and many others

• The theology of the Reformers, with special attention on their writings defending the catholicity of the Reformation

This balanced, insightful, and accessible treatment of the Reformation will help readers see this watershed moment in the history of Christianity with fresh eyes and appreciate the unity they have with the church across time.

Seasons of Sorrow

The Pain of Loss and the Comfort of God

Tim Challies

“If ever there was a book Tim Challies needed to write, it’s this one. And it’s a book I needed to read. Within these pages, you will do more than enter Tim’s story of enormous loss; you will come out on the other side having gained a softer heart and a renewed courage to persevere through your own dark seasons of affliction.”

Joni and Friends International Disability

“Seasons of Sorrow is a beautiful book. Reading it is like holding a precious gift, like standing on holy ground.”

PAUL DAVID TRIPP, pastor, speaker, author of New Morning Mercies and Suffering: Gospel Hope When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

“Seasons of Sorrow cut straight to my soul. I read it within a few weeks of the unexpected deaths of two close friends and while my wife struggles bravely with stage 4 cancer. Tim’s heartfelt pain and Christ-centered perspective spoke to both my heart and my head.”

RANDY ALCORN, author of Heaven and If God Is Good “Believers need this book, and only Tim Challies could have written it. I am so thankful that Nick was a student at Boyce College, and his influence as a young Christian was remarkable.”

On November 3, 2020, Tim and Aileen Challies received the shocking news that their son Nick had died. A twenty-year-old student at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, he had been participating in a school activity with his fiancée, sister, and friends, when he fell unconscious and collapsed to the ground. Neither students nor a passing doctor nor paramedics were able to revive him. His parents received the news at their home in Toronto and immediately departed for Louisville to be together as a family. While on the plane, Tim, an author and blogger, began to process his loss through writing. In Seasons of Sorrow, Tim shares real-time reflections from the first year of grief—through the seasons from fall to summer—introducing readers to what he describes as the “ministry of sorrow.”

We are fitted to the ministry of sorrow by suffering loss. Just as God calls some to proclaim the gospel in far-off lands, he calls some to bear witness to his goodness in grief. Just as he calls some to give generously and some to act mercifully, he also calls some to grieve faithfully. Through this ministry we learn to come alongside others who may face a similar loss and minister to them in their sorrow, comforting them with the comfort we ourselves have received from God—weeping with those who weep.

An honest account of the pain of loss and the doubts and fears that often plague us in our grief, as well as the hope we have in the midst of our sorrow, this is a book for anyone who has loved and lost. It shows us how to grieve, not as the world grieves, but as those who have real hope in a real Savior.

Q A What initially sparked the idea for A Burning House?

As I observed conversations regarding the American ethnic rift, I was taken aback by the consistent refrain that the gospel has no bearing on our temporal fallen circumstances. The issue exploded when a sect of well-known pastors, speaking on behalf of American Evangelicalism, asserted, “We should stick to preaching the gospel.” They maintained that Jesus was not a voice of social change, and it is inappropriate for Christians to assume a mission that Christ never endorsed. These pastors argued that the gospel saves eternally but has little to no bearing on our temporal circumstances. Such a view truncates our message. Christ was mindful of temporal hardships, and evangelicals should bring the gospel to bear on worldly brokenness.

Q A Q A

Where does the book’s title come from?

Martin Luther King’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech is by far his most cited message. But in his nal years, he considered the speech naïve. He said his “dream … has, at many points, turned into a nightmare.” Observing that desegregation without genuine integration and opportunity can be destructive, King, paraphrasing James Baldwin, said, “I fear I may have integrated my people into a burning house.” I have long advocated for the ethnic integration of evangelicalism, but I’ve concluded that integrating the movement without carefully confronting its truncation of the gospel is tantamount to ushering unsuspecting people into a burning house.

The last two years have been especially dif cult for many people. Have you found the message of your book speaking to these current challenges as you’ve written it?

The last two years have only underlined a longstanding problem. Since its inception, the black church has valued the gospel’s relevance to brokenness and injustice in a fallen world. Recent years have highlighted the yawning chasm between black and white churches. The language separating social justice from the gospel is foreign to many black people in my community. It has led some to conclude that American Evangelicalism and the black church cannot be reconciled; their missions are too divergent. I aim to show that the evangelical mission emphasizes “activism.” While some in American Evangelicalism rebuff the gospel’s temporal relevance, global evangelicalism sustains the gospel’s temporal worth.

Q A

If readers left your book with only one idea, what would you want it to be?

I pray readers gain an appreciation for a whole gospel message. Usually, we think of the gospel as means to eternal salvation; its domain is heavenly. While that is not wrong, it is incomplete. Christ’s kingdom has authoritative implications in heaven and on Earth (Matt. 28:28). Any message that emphasizes one of these domains to the exclusion of the other violates the comprehensive gospel and deviates from our kingdom agenda.

A Burning House

Redeeming American Evangelicalism by Examining its Histor y, Mission, and Message

Brandon Washington

American Evangelicalism is ablaze. This is an inevitable result of divisions along ethnic and cultural lines, which have long tarnished the movement’s witness. Doctrinal identity unites black and white evangelicals, but rifts afflict the camp, so the movement is waning.

In A Burning House, Brandon Washington contends that deliberate and sacrificial integration is the sole solution to bolster evangelicalism’s foundation. In the 1950s and ’60s, with desegregation on the horizon, Martin Luther King Jr. said, “I’ve come to believe that we are integrating into a burning house.” As with the country, if we hope to move toward integrating the American Evangelical church, we must do so as firefighters.

Washington is not calling American Evangelicalism to become something new. Rather, he challenges the movement to realize what it has always been in Christ. The selfless integration of Evangelicalism will result in a holy witness to humanity and a greater understanding of Shalom—peace, justice, wholeness—in the world. These are the inevitable fruits of espousing and preaching a comprehensive gospel message.

Jesus v. Evangelicals

A Biblical Critique of a Wayward Movement

“Sometimes it takes someone from a foreign country to perceive the impact of the USA on its version of evangelicalism. … Con Campbell has watched American evangelicalism from afar and up close, and he has experienced one of life’s biggest tragedies. This book is a testimony of his experience within evangelicalism as one of its leaders, in the USA and abroad, and Jesus v. Evangelicals becomes through his pain a heart-felt plea that evangelicalism turn back to Jesus to rediscover all over again the way of Jesus. Jesus v. Evangelicals is a painful healing many of us need.”

SCOT MCKNIGHT, author of A Church Called Tov, pastor, and professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary

“Con Campbell knows the American evangelical scene from the inside, yet he offers an outsider perspective of a movement that he believes has gone astray. Using a mixture of cultural commentary and biblical insights, Campbell puts his finger on the lies and lunacies that gets trotted out in the name of Christ in American circles. This is not an elitist critique of popular American religion, it is calling America back to the religion of Jesus and the apostles.”

DR. MICHAEL F. BIRD, author of Religious Freedom in the Secular Age, academic dean and lecturer in New Testament at Ridley College in Melbourne, Australia.

The naked grasping at political power at the expense of moral credibility has revealed a movement in disarray. Evangelicals are now faced with a quandary: will they double-down and continue along this perilous path, or will they stop, reflect, and change course? And while support of Donald Trump has produced the tipping point of the evangelical crisis, it is not by any means its only problem.

Evangelicals claim the Bible as the supreme authority in matters of faith. But in reality, it is particular readings of the Bible that govern evangelical faith. Some evangelical readings of the Bible can be highly selective. They distort the Bible’s teaching in crucial ways and often lead evangelicals to misguided attempts to relate to the world around them. Many Christians who once self-professed as “evangelicals” can no longer use the term of themselves because of what it has come to represent—power-mongering, divisiveness, judgementalism, hypocrisy, pride, greed. Some leave not just evangelicalism but Christianity for good.

Jesus v. Evangelicals is an insider’s critique of the evangelical movement according to its own rules. Since evangelicals regard themselves governed by the Bible, biblical scholar Constantine Campbell engages the Bible to critique evangelicals and to call out the problems within the contemporary evangelical movement. By revealing evangelical distortions of the Bible, this book seeks to restore the dignity of the Christian faith and to renew public interest in Jesus, while calling evangelicals back to his teaching. Constantine Campbell appeals to evangelicals to break free from the grid that has distorted their understanding of the Bible and to restore public respect for Christianity in spite of its misrepresentations by the evangelical church.

Biblical Critical Theory

How the Bible’s Unfolding Story Makes Sense of Modern Life and

Culture

Christopher Watkin

“A book that I have been eagerly anticipating for years….”

TIMOTHY KELLER, is founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church

“This book is a magnificent achievement. It is a must-read for Christian leaders wanting to think biblically about our de-Christianising world.”

JOHN DICKSON, author and historian, host of Undeceptions, Jean Kvamme Distinguished Professor at Wheaton College

“Watkin turns and overturns the tables of today’s culture- changers by examining various critical theories through biblical lenses rather than vice versa. Biblical Critical Theory is an important update of Augustine’s City of God, a proposal for making biblical sense of what is happening in contemporary culture. This is the ultimate how-to book for disciples looking to beat ideological swords and other weapons in the popular culture wars into gospel plowshares, tools for making sense of, and reconciling, the contradictions of our present moment.”

In Biblical Critical Theory, Christopher Watkin shows how the Bible and its unfolding story help us make sense of modern life and culture.

Critical theories exist to critique what we think we know about reality and the social, political, and cultural structures in which we live. In doing so, they make visible the values and beliefs of a culture in order to scrutinize and change them.

Biblical Critical Theory exposes and evaluates the often-hidden assumptions and concepts that shape late-modern society, examining them through the lens of the biblical story running from Genesis to Revelation. With extensive diagrams and practical tools, Biblical Critical Theory shows how the patterns of the Bible’s storyline can provide incisive, fresh, and nuanced ways of intervening in today’s debates on everything from science, the arts, and politics to dignity, multiculturalism, and equality, showing Christians the moves to make and the tools to use in analyzing and engaging with all sorts of cultural artifacts and events, in a way that is both biblically faithful and culturally relevant.

It is not enough for Christians to explain the Bible to the culture in which we live. We must also explain the culture in which we live within the framework and categories of the Bible. If Christians want to speak with a fresh, engaging, and dynamic voice in the marketplace of ideas today, we need to mine the unique treasures of the distinctive biblical storyline.

CHRISTOPHER WATKIN (PhD, University of Cambridge) is senior lecturer in French studies at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He is a scholar with an international reputation in the area of modern and contemporary European thought, atheism, and the relationship between the Bible and philosophy. His published work runs the spectrum from academic monographs on contemporary philosophy to books written for general readers, both Christian and secular, and include Difficult Atheism, From Plato to Postmodernism, Great Thinkers: Jacques Derrida, and others.

“Watkin provides a fascinating and bracing exploration of key points at which the biblical story calls into question fundamental preunderstandings we take for granted even before we ‘engage the culture.’ Biblical Critical Theory doesn’t just give us answers; it helps us to come up with better questions. The components aren’t new, but the way he’s put it all together offers an innovative and immensely fruitful paradigm.”

“Watkin’s Biblical Critical Theory reveals how the whole of Scripture presents a lens through which we can— and should— see all of reality. It is an exercise in understanding ‘the now and the not yet.’ Incisive, accessible, and astonishing in scope, this book is sure to be an immensely valuable Christian resource.”

DOLORES G. MORRIS, University of South Florida

“Where was this book when I was floundering in a sea of humanities all those years ago? Christopher Watkin’s Biblical Critical Theory equips Christians to walk confidently as they appropriate and advance the ideas of our cultural milieu. Watkin will capture your intellect andimagination. This book is a must-read for all serious thinkers.”

“This is a brilliant and unique book. Inspired by Augustine’s City of God, Watkin has written a tour de force, diagonalizing a biblical path through rival narratives and ideologies. Biblical Critical Theory combines rich biblical theology with penetrating philosophical reflection; the result is a wonderful example of how cultural engagement should be done. It is the most biblical, up-to-date, and comprehensive analysis of contemporary Western culture that I know of.”

“This is the best yet most accessible exploration of the intersection between Christianity, culture, and philosophy I’ve read in recent years. Christopher Watkin invites readers through a tour of the Bible’s philosophical depths and implications, while demonstrating persuasively that the Christian worldview subversively fulfills major philosophies, ancient and modern. Further, it applies the theology of neo-Calvinism for a contemporary audience. I can’t be more excited about Watkin’s work. Run, don’t walk, to get this book!”

The Knowledge of God in the World and the Word

An Introduction to Classical Apologetics

“The Knowledge of God in the World and the Word is an outstanding one-stop resource to equip believers to share powerful arguments for Christianity. Read it. Study it. Then go and tell of this God revealed in the ‘World and in the Word.”

M. GOULD, associate professor of philosophy of religion, Palm Beach Atlantic University

“I heartily recommend this valuable volume by Doug Groothuis and Andrew Shepardson.”

PAUL COPAN, Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and Ethics, Palm Beach Atlantic University, and author of Is God a Moral Monster? and Is God a Vindictive Bully?

Amid the crisis of authority in our modern and postmodern era, Christians need to be able to point to God’s revelation in the natural world in addition to defending God’s unique revelation in the Bible and in the person of Jesus Christ.

Classical apologetics takes a two-step approach to commending the Christian picture of reality. First, arguments for the existence of God, such as those of natural theology, are employed to create common ground with people outside the household of the Christian faith and to provide intellectual support for Christians. Second, classical apologetics defends key items of Christian revelation, including the reliability of the Bible, the identity of the historical Jesus, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

In Knowledge of God in the World and the Word, authors Douglas Groothuis and Andrew I. Shepardson provide a simple introduction to classical apologetics that also addresses the most common objections to natural theology. Readers will discover in the book an easy point of entry into understanding why Christian beliefs about Jesus are true and rational. Further, the authors apply the power of classical apologetics to Christian ministry.

DOUGLAS GROOTHUIS (PhD, University of Oregon) is professor of philosophy at Denver Seminary in Denver, Colorado, where he heads the apologetics and ethics masters degree program. His articles have been published in journals such as Religious Studies, Philosophia Christi, Themelios, Christian Scholar’s Review, Inquiry, and Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society. He has written numerous books, including Christian Apologetics, Philosophy in Seven Sentences, and Truth Decay

ANDREW I. SHEPARDSON (PhD, University of Toronto) leads the BA and MA programs in applied apologetics at Colorado Christian University and is affiliated faculty at Denver Seminary and Life Pacific University. His work has been published in Philosophia Christi, Quadrum, The Denver Journal, Orthodoxy in Dialogue, and the Toronto Journal of Theology. He is the author of Who’s Afraid of the Unmoved Mover?: Postmodernism and Natural Theology.

Economic

Ethics for the Neighborhood

Adam Gustine and José Humphreys

A deeply theological yet highly practical look at the economic ethics and practices of the Old Testament, their fulfillment in Jesus, and their application for seeking justice today. Focusing on the triad of gleaning, sabbath, and jubilee, this book will not only motivate Christians embedded in local communities to embrace a serious commitment to economic development as a way of seeking justice, but it will also guide people in the application of these principles through stories and examples, models, and practices. These applications include personal, church, and systemic expressions to help Christians engaged in the broader society as well as those looking to engage this work from a church-centered view.

ADAM GUSTINE is the author of Becoming a Just Church: Cultivating Communities of God’s Shalom, the 2019 IVP Reader’s Choice Award in Christian practice. He is an assistant director of the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Social Concerns, focused on justice education and research for the Common Good.

JOSÉ HUMPHREYS is a native New Yorker, ordained minister, and co-founder of Metro Hope Church, a multiethnic and multicultural church in East Harlem, New York City. More Than

Man’s Religion

Though many today accuse Christianity of being a white, imperialistic religion, it is actually the source for cherished Western ideals of racial and gender equality. In More Than a White Man’s Religion, author and speaker Abdu Murray shares stories from the Bible and his own experiences as a global apologist, a member of an ethnic minority, a son of immigrants, and a former Muslim to show that the gospel message provides dignity and liberty to non-whites and women.

ABDU MURRAY (JD, University of Michigan) is an apologist, leading debates, dialogues, and open forums around the world for churches, college campuses, and business and government gatherings. He hosts the podcast The Defense Rests. He is the author of many articles and three books, including Grand Central Question and Saving Truth.

Street Smarts

Using Questions to Answer Christianity’s Toughest Challenges

Gregory Koukl

Street Smarts by Gregory Koukl helps Christians better engage in productive conversations with those who challenge their convictions on a variety of issues. A follow-up to Koukl’s best-selling Tactics, this book focuses on revealing the fundamental flaws in common, current challenges to Christian beliefs and values. It then provides individual strategies to exploit those shortcomings by offering model questions and sample dialogues to help guide believers in genial, yet persuasive, conversations.

Koukl begins by explaining the important difference in evangelism between a harvest approach (reaping) and a gardening approach (sowing). He then provides an overview of the tactical game plan he uses to have fruitful “gardening” conversations with those who are not yet Christians. Subsequent chapters tackle specific areas of challenge that Christians frequently face in discussions “on the street,” as it were--in those conversations with friends, family, or critics that believers often avoid because they feel out of their element, vulnerable, or exposed.

With the specific challenges he addresses, Koukl shows precisely how and why each falters. instructing the reader in a lucid, well-organized, and easy-to-follow fashion. He then provides a specific set of questions--the same questions Koukl uses in his own encounters--that are embedded in sample mini-dialogues the Christian can use to exploit those flaws in an amicable, yet incisive, way.

Some questions are used to get the discussion moving forward in a disarming fashion. Others are aimed more directly at the flaws or liabilities of the typical challenges people raise. Questions encourage challengers to think more carefully about their objections or consider problems with their own views that they may not have considered or even have been aware of.

Street Smarts equips Christians to handle tough challenges in a straightforward and user-friendly way. It provides the practical tools they need to keep them in the driver’s seat of otherwise difficult and discomfiting conversations. It enables them to stand up for Christ in a safe, genial, yet effective way.

GREGORY KOUKL holds MA degrees with honors in both apologetics and philosophy. He’s spoken on over 80 university campuses and hosted his own call-in radio talk show for over 33 years defending “Christianity worth thinking about.” Greg is founder and president of Stand to Reason (str.org) and serves as adjunct professor of Christian apologetics at Biola University. He is the author of the award-winning The Story of Reality and the best-selling Tactics.

“Dr. Gina Zurlo’s Global Christianity is a comprehensive, essential, and valuable book in the study of World Christianity. She covers four major Christian traditions and provides trends, declines, growth, and vital information about these traditions around the globe. Each country covered includes a map, graphs, statistics, facts, culture, comparative charts, and other pertinent data. This book is accessible and a rich resource for students, churches, and anyone interested in global Christianity. I highly recommend it.”

theology

Earlham

Christianity is now a majority-global South religion, with more believers living in Africa, Asia, and Latin America than in Europe and North America. However, most Americans have little exposure to Christians around the world. In addition, while the United States is still the country that sends the most international missionaries and many American churches support missionaries overseas, they often fail to understand the beliefs, practices, histories, and challenges Christians experience in other cultural contexts.

Global Christianity is an accessible quick-reference guide to the global church. Filled with at-a-glance maps and charts, it puts relevant and up-to-date information into the hands of churches, mission organizations, and individuals. Useful for prayer, missions, outreach, and study of the global church, this is the new standard resource on the largest religion in the world.

Understand Christianity within each continent, country, tradition, and movement with:

• Current demographic information from the United Nations

• Research from the Center for the Study of Global Christianity

• Focus on historical, sociological, political, and religious contexts

• Local considerations like war and conflict, religious freedom, and gender inequality

This resource will satisfy those looking for background on the global church and equip individuals and churches to strategically pray for, give to, and unite with fellow Christians around the world.

The Great Love of God

Encountering

God’s Heart for a Hostile World Heath Lambert

“Heath Lambert knows what it’s like to experience God’s love in the midst of great adversity. In this book, he pulls back the veil so we can see, in fresh and encouraging ways, God’s boundless love and delight in his children.”

RANDY ALCORN, author of Heaven, If God is Good, and Deception

“Deeply personal, refreshingly transparent, intensely engaging, and biblically faithful . . . Heath gives raw personal testimony attesting to the steadfast, satisfying, and practical love of God toward his children. Heath’s musings will strengthen weary hearts and calm troubled souls with the everlasting truth of God’s great love.”

“We all know that God so loved the world that he gave his Son to die. This book supplies the missing pieces, showing us how God’s love extends practically to our lives today—even amid our trials and unanswered questions. It will increase your understanding, build your faith, and show you that God’s love is greater than you or I ever dreamed. Read it, be blessed, and pass it along to others.”

From racism to road rage, an avalanche of cruelty confronts us today. We hear painful revelations of widespread abuse in leadership and witness vicious attacks on social media. With more opportunities to connect with others than ever before, we remain divided, longing for close relationships.

There is only one great love that can solve these problems, a love that is greater than the animosity, failure, isolation, and betrayal we see all around us, a love that speaks to our greatest longings and strongest needs. Now more than ever, and more than anything, people need a powerfully fresh encounter with God’s great love.

In The Great Love of God, Heath Lambert provides an accessible, passionate, and intensely personal exploration of how divine love casts out fear, provides ultimate hope, and never fails us. He leads us on a journey to encounter the heart of God’s infinite of love and shows how that love can transform you and those around you into people shaped by God’s great love.

HEATH LAMBERT is the senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL. He also serves as associate professor at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. Formerly, he served as executive director of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors. Hybrid Church

Rethinking the Church for a Post-Christian Digital Age

James Emery White

Over the past few years, nearly every church in the US has been forced to adopt new ministry strategies. COVID-19 quarantines upended routines and deprived ministry leaders of trusted resources they had grown accustomed to using, pushing churches to embrace digital technologies they avoided before. And that’s a good thing.

In Hybrid Church, James Emery White addresses the postpandemic church in the US. He calls it to resist the temptation to return to “ministry as normal.” While COVID-19 and its quarantines were devastating to many, they also motivated churches to catch up with the unique missional needs of our day.

The future church cannot limit itself merely to physical gatherings. It cannot reach only those who are already churched. It must become hybrid: both physical and digital, for believers and those outside the church. In Hybrid Church, White casts the vision and draws the roadmap for ministry in a post-Christian, digital world.

JAMES EMERY WHITE is the founding and senior pastor of Mecklenburg Community Church in Charlotte, North Carolina; former professor of theology and culture at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, where he also served as its fourth president; and author of more than twenty books, which have been translated into ten languages.

Churches across the country are floundering, and many pastors are deeply discouraged. They work hard and with great sincerity, but their efforts don’t seem to be helping their people to flourish. Congregations are split over political issues. Faith is low. Finances are tight. Many leaders want to love their flocks but find themselves in endless arguments with the people they are trying to serve.

In Fan the Flame, New York Times bestselling author and pastor Jim Cymbala offers advice to help leaders become the kind of people God can use to ignite revival in today’s church. By focusing on Acts 20— Paul’s farewell address to the Ephesian church—he provides tools for personal renewal that will spark a fresh love for Jesus, a deeper reliance on God’s Spirit, and a growing love for prayer.

JOHN BLATTNER is a writer with a background in journalism, broadcasting, Christian publishing, pastoral leadership, and the practice of law. He has authored, coauthored, or anthologized more than twentyfive books. He lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

“The best practical, pastoral book on the doctrine of the Second Coming written in years. Recommended!”

TIM KELLER, founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church

Hope is fuel. For Jesus’ disciples, the hope of seeing their risen Lord again, face to face, powered their endurance through persecution, their patience in discipling new believers, and their courage to renounce injustice and sinful passions.

But have we set aside that fuel because the topic of Jesus’ return is mired in confusion and controversy? Many Christians have lost or overlooked the importance of the Lord’s appearing, resulting in a sluggish, ineffective faith.

What if there is a way to recapture spiritual momentum? What if we could tap into the apostles’ longing to simply be in the presence of the resurrected Christ without getting entangled in date-setting or disagreements about the Millennium? And what if this fresh hope could drive our daily responses to temptation, affliction, discouragement, and life in a broken world?

In Bright Hope for Tomorrow, pastor Chris Davis points the way forward. Exploring the return of Jesus on the terms of the New Testament letters, this book looks at portraits of Jesus’ appearing, rhythms necessary to maintain expectancy (including gathering, fasting, and resting), and the practical transformation such anticipation effects. Bright Hope for Tomorrow is not the next new thing. Rather, it is a recovery of what has been lost by end-times studies that have veered into peripheral concerns. Join this return to the gospel center: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

CHRIS DAVIS is senior pastor of Groveton Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. He and his wife, Rachael, have four children.

“I thought Bully Pulpit would be a book every pastor and Christian leader ought to read. But I changed my mind: every Christian from pulpit to pew needs to read this wise and timely work—for the sake of the church and her people.”

KAREN SWALLOW PRIOR, research professor of English and Christianity & Culture at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and author of On Reading Well

The last decade has witnessed a rising number of churches wrecked by spiritual abuse—harsh, heavy-handed, domineering behavior from those in a position of spiritual authority. And high-profile cases are only a small portion of this widespread problem. Behind the scenes, there are many more cases of spiritual abuse that we will never hear about. Victims suffer in silence, not knowing where to turn. It seems that some of the leaders we are producing—and, if we are honest, some of the leaders we want—have characteristics that are either absent from, or even the very opposite of, the list of leadership characteristics laid down in Scripture.

Of course, most pastors and leaders are godly, wonderful people that don’t abuse their sheep. They shepherd their flocks gently and patiently. But we can’t ignore the growing number who do not.

We need gentle shepherds now more than ever, and in Bully Pulpit, seminary president and biblical scholar Michael J. Kruger offers a unique perspective for both church leaders and church members on the problem of spiritual abuse, how to spot it, and how to handle it in the church.

MICHAEL J. KRUGER (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is the president and Samuel C. Patterson Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is the author of multiple books, including Surviving Religion 101. He blogs regularly at michaeljkruger.com.

This book provides a well-researched biblical and scientific overview of abuse. A broad overview, it deals with the various types of abuse, the various effects of abuse, and the means of healing. Abuse can be sexual, physical, neglect, spiritual, and verbal. Humans are deeply impacted by others due to being made in the image of God. Just as surely as abusive relationships have tremendous power to wound the soul, so healthy relationships have tremendous power to nurture and heal the soul.

This second edition has been updated to reflect research conducted and published in the past 15 years on abuse and trauma. It accounts for the significant social changes and increased mental health struggles in our culture, including dramatic escalation in rates of depression, anxiety, suicide, and isolation, which exacerbate the effects of abuse and complicate the healing process. Based on their now-extensive trauma care experience, this new edition helps readers how to minister to new domestic and global victims such as sex trafficking survivors, foster children, refugees, and survivors of genocide. Examples and illustrations are updated with more recent ones from high-profile abuse cases and the aftermath of the #MeToo movement.

STEVEN R. TRACY is professor of theology and ethics at Phoenix Seminary in Phoenix, Arizona. He graduated from Western Conservative Baptist Seminary (MDiv, ThM), and a received a PhD in New Testament from the University of Sheffield, England.

CELESTIA G. TRACY (MA Counseling/Psychology, Lewis and Clark College) is the vice president and resource director for Mending the Soul. Celestia draws from eighteen years of classroom, and professional clinical practice specializing in early childhood development and trauma care.

The experience of shame is more common than we think. It isn’t confined to those who have failed or gone through trauma or who have been told as children they would never amount to anything. People who are immensely successful also struggle with a sense they are deficient in some way.

Drawing on a wide range of sources including scripture, spiritual formation classics, psychology, and relational neuroscience, and using a rich variety of stories from his own life, Ken Shigematsu shows how a deep, experiential encounter with the love of God can heal us of our shame, make us whole, and inspire us to fulfill our purpose by making a faithful contribution to the world.

Now I Become Myself will help you to break free of envy and will reveal how beauty and the experience of joy can help us overcome shame. It is for anyone who has a sense of not being enough in some way—whether you’ve experienced suffering or success—who longs to live out of a healthy sense of security and freedom.

In The Weary Leader’s Guide to Burnout, Sean Nemecek takes Christian leaders on a journey from burnout through recovery and on to spiritual vitality. By sharing his own story of burnout and unpacking its causes and symptoms, Nemececk guides leaders through practical, actionable steps toward resilience and wholeness.

Nemecek offers readers a holistic approach to burnout diagnosis, recovery, and prevention through an integration of biblical interpretation, theology, psychology, and contemplative spirituality. Readers will learn how to do the inner work necessary for spiritual transformation, guided by the power and healing of the Holy Spirit. Filled with relatable stories of church leaders who have walked a path toward wholeness, as well as discussion questions for personal contemplation or group discussion, The Weary Leader’s Guide to Burnout will help Christian leaders develop an integrated approach to life, work, and ministry.

ENDNOTES: A LETTER FROM

EndNotes: A Letter from the Editor Marketer

In past columns, my esteemed editorial colleagues have expertly guided readers through both our editorial mission and process. This time around, and only after already covering the foundations of our publishing program, the Catalog Manager approached me (gasp, a marketer!).

CM: Can you write the EndNotes for this upcoming catalog?

Me: Sure, no problem.

CM: (6 weeks later) How’s that article coming along?

Me: It’s coming along quite nicely. So much written. But let me ask you, and this is just to confirm I’m on the right track because like I said, so much writing has already happened ... what should this be about?

CM: Write about what marketers want to see from potential authors.

Me: You mean like platform and social media and other objections we make at pub board?

CM: Sure, just don’t exaggerate this exchange and include it to start your article. Also, you are late.

Me: Got it. Let me write up something about the myths of social media for prospective authors. You know, I doubt Cicero was ever given deadlines.

MYTH 1: You need to have an active presence on social media. Well, yes, that is somewhat necessary, so maybe not a myth per se. But the deeper truth is this: what we really want to see is a commitment and passion to championing ideas. And not just ideas, but your ideas. When we invest our resources into your book, we know that a successful launch will require an author that is equally invested in sharing their views with enthusiasm and authority, no matter the opportunity.

MYTH 2: You need to have a bunch of social media followers. Not necessarily. But show us evidence that your ideas are persuasive and attention-grabbing. We all know social media followings can be purchased or manipulated anyways. Even if the crowds have yet to form, help us understand how the ingredients are there for your content to attract a multitude of readers.

MYTH 3: You need to have high engagement on your channels. Obviously, this is not a bad thing, but really what we’re looking for with a new author is evidence that you understand your audience and what they want you to write about. In other words, we want to see contextual intelligence that we are publishing innovative content that will make a difference for our readers. When the customer is not at the heart of publication decisions, we can end up chasing content that doesn’t really matter to readers, missing opportunities to really address their needs.

MYTH 4: You need to post frequently. You post every day. Or you don’t. What we're looking for is evidence that you are a writer, that you can’t rest until you’ve framed your ideas in a compelling way that will command attention, even by those unfamiliar with your work.

MYTH 5: You need to live and breathe social media. No. If Twitter is oxygen to you, then that’s a bigger issue. We’re looking for the curious, the author that wants to engage the wider exchange of ideas—wherever that happens. Most importantly, we want an active partner and team player. Launching a book is hard work.

So much has changed in social media over the last year. From Facebook banning religious ads to the rise of #BookTok, from the growing importance of short-form video to the unfolding changes at Twitter, it’s hard to remember a previous year with so many changes. Nowadays it seems like you could build a huge platform on any channel and see it collapse with just one tweak of the algorithm. Hopefully it’s encouraging to know we are simply looking for a fearless author-collaborator that winsomely moves readers to action, anticipating their needs.
