LETTER FROM STAN GUNDRY Dear Professor, We are pleased to present our Spring 2022 Academic Catalog featuring Zondervan Academic and Zondervan Reflective releases from January 2022 through August 2022. As always, our goal is to • publish across the broad spectrum of biblical, theological, and ministry-related disciplines; • publish works that stay abreast of current scholarship and are written by the emerging generation of scholars as well as seasoned, proven scholars; and • publish works that model irenic discussion, represent a variety of viewpoints, and yet stay within the boundaries of our commitments to the historic doctrines of orthodox Christianity and biblical authority. Our team aims to stay at the cutting edge of publishing, seeking new ways to deliver first-rate scholarship to an emerging generation heavily influenced by new technologies and social upheaval. As a publisher grounded in the historic Christian faith, we believe our spring list reflects our deep commitment to biblical teaching and its application—even when uncomfortable—to every part of our lives. In doing so, we have continued to lead the way in Christian academic publishing, offering resources that augment personal discipleship, call us to greater public character, and take us deeper into the study of the biblical text. While some of our team did travel to Fort Worth and San Antonio, our presence at both ETS and SBL/AAR was limited by our concern for the health of our employees. We are committed to returning to our full presence at both conferences when it is generally considered safe to gather in large conventions. Our hope is that we will be able to see many of you in Denver in 2022! In 2022, the Los Angeles Theology Conference (LATC) returns. This year’s conference focuses on ecclesiology and features eminent theologians who will bring historical depth, ecumenical scope, and analytical clarity to this important topic. We are also pleased to announce the Scottish Dogmatics Conference (SDC). Alternating years with LATC, the inaugural meeting will take place in late spring 2023 and be held at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. To learn more about both conferences, see pages 4 and 5. Several of our books received awards this year, and I’d like to recognize some of them here. The Southwestern Journal of Theology named Douglas Moo’s highly anticipated A Theology of Paul and His Letters Book of the Year and Gary Schnittjer’s groundbreaking Old Testament Use of Old Testament as Book of the Year in Biblical Studies. Moo’s book picked up two other awards: Christianity Today’s Book of the Year in Biblical Studies and The Gospel Coalition’s Book of the Year in Academic Theology. Our other 2021/2022 award-winning books are listed just below this letter. At Zondervan Academic and Zondervan Reflective we aspire to be at the forefront of Christian publishing. We aim to encourage and challenge our readers with books rooted in the Christian theological tradition—a tradition whose endurance for more than two millennia still inspires hope in all who confess Jesus Christ as Lord. With best wishes and prayers for all of you,

Stanley N. Gundry SVP and Publisher, Zondervan Academic / Zondervan Reflective / Study Resources Editor-in-Chief, Zondervan

History of the Quests for the Historical Jesus, Volumes 1 and 2 From the Beginnings of Christianity to the End of World War II Colin Brown with Craig A. Evans Jesus of Nazareth ranks among the most important figures in history. Yet, in contemporary scholarship, there is no common agreement about his identity. It is generally accepted that there were three quests for the historical Jesus. The first was characterized by Albert Schweitzer and came to be called the “Old Quest,” while the second was conceived of as the “New Quest” of the 1950s. The interval between the Old and New Quests was facetiously called the “No Quest.” This three-quest history in fact came about more due to the ingenuity of publishers than to the scholars engaged in the enterprise. But in the 1970s and 1980s, there emerged yet another quest, which was often informally referred to as the “Third Quest.” This quest was largely driven by scholars in search of the historical, social, and religious setting of Jesus and his followers. The Dead Sea Scrolls, archaeological findings, papyri, and other material remains came to play an important part in this newer research. A History of the Quests for the Historical Jesus is an extensive two-volume reassessment of the situation, beginning with the evolution of orthodoxy and quests before Schweitzer’s, through the Nazi attempt to make Jesus an Aryan critic of Judaism, and to today’s ongoing questions about criteria, methods, and specific issues. The late Colin Brown brings his scholarly prowess in both theology and biblical studies to bear on the subject of the quests, assessing not only the historical, exegetical, critical nuts and bolts of the debate but also its philosophical and theological underpinnings. Instead of seeking a bedrock of “facts,” Brown stresses the role of hermeneutics in formulating questions and seeking answers. Whether we realize it or not, “facts” themselves are shaped by our hermeneutics and belief systems.

Sophisticated in both its philosophical-theological and historical-exegetical dimensions, this new survey and analysis of the quests for the historical Jesus makes a landmark contribution to this important topic in biblical studies. Colin Brown was almost finished with the manuscript at the time of his passing in 2019. Brought to its final form by Craig A. Evans, this book promises to become the definitive history and assessment of the quests for the historical Jesus.

“Arguably Moo’s magnum opus.... A massive and monumental work on Pauline theology that will teach readers for decades to come.” —REV. DR. MICHAEL F. BIRD, academic dean and lecturer in Theology, Ridley College in Melbourne, Australia “A Theology of Paul and His Letters is at the same time both panoramic in scope and attentive to the details of individual words and phrases. Moo draws on a vast wealth of scholarship, interacting fairly and charitably with others, and invariably clarifying not just Paul’s thought but also his emphases and balance. I can recommend it with pleasure— and with envy of the learning and good judgment evident throughout this book.” —SIMON GATHERCOLE, professor of New Testament and early Christianity, University of Cambridge $54.99 | $32.99 ISBN 9780310270904 Hardcover - 784 pages

The Gospel of Mark, widely assumed to be the earliest narrative of Jesus’s life and the least explicit in terms of Christology, has long served as a worktable for the discovery of Christian origins and developing theologies. Christology in Mark’s Gospel: Four Views brings together key voices in conversation in order to offer a clear entry point into early Christians’ understanding of Jesus’s identity: Sandra Huebenthal (Suspended Christology), Larry W. Hurtado (Mark’s Presentation of Jesus; with rejoinder by Chris Keith), J. R. Daniel Kirk (Narrative Christology of a Suffering King), and Adam Winn (Jesus as the YHWH of Israel in the Gospel of Mark). ANTHONY LE DONNE (PhD, Durham University) is professor of New Testament at United Theological Seminary. J. R. DANIEL KIRK (PhD, Duke University) is the pastoral director for San Francisco at the Newbigin House of Studies. ADAM WINN (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary) is assistant professor at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor College of Christian Studies. SANDRA HUEBENTHAL (PhD, Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Sankt Georgen/Frankfurt) is professor of exegesis and biblical theology at the University of Passau in Germany. LARRY W. HURTADO was Professor (Emeritus) of New Testament Language, Literature & Theology at the University of Edinburgh. CHRIS KEITH (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is research professor of New Testament and early Christianity at St. Mary’s University College, Twickenham, UK.

Biblical Greek Vocabulary in Context by Miles V. Van Pelt and Katharine C. Van Pelt is designed to reinforce a student’s basic Greek vocabulary by presenting words that occur twenty-five times or more in the context of the Greek New Testament. Van Pelt and Van Pelt collate all 513 of these Greek words into approximately 200 key biblical verses and/or verse fragments to help students practice reading them in their literary context and thus improve their Greek vocabulary retention. Rather than rote memorization, Van Pelt and Van Pelt’s approach teaches word meaning through each word’s naturally occurring context—the way people naturally learn languages. The book includes two primary sections: 1. The first section provides room for students to write their own glosses of the biblical verse and to parse as they feel necessary. An English translation is also provided, and any term that appears less than twenty-five times is glossed. 2. The second section of the book provides the same biblical verses from the first section but with minimal room to write glosses and parse and without an English translation for aid. The end of the book includes a Greek-English lexicon of all the words occurring twenty-five times or more in the Greek New Testament. MILES V. VAN PELT (PhD, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is the Alan Hayes Belcher Jr. Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Languages, academic dean, and director of the Summer Institute for Biblical Languages at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi. He has been teaching the biblical languages and developing languages resource for over twenty-five years. KATHARINE C. VAN PELT (JD candidate, University of Mississippi School of Law) graduated from the University of Kentucky, Phi Beta Kappa, with a Bachelor of Arts in linguistics. In addition to Hebrew, Latin, and German, she has been studying Hellenistic and Classical Greek for over ten years.

The Concise New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis Christopher A. Beetham, Editor The Concise New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis (CNIDNTTE) by Christopher A. Beetham is a significant resource for those looking for a quick-reference guide to aid in exegesis and interpretation. It retains all the essentials of the monumental and magisterial New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis edited by Moisés Silva, bringing together its most important elements into one accessible volume. It preserves the most relevant and valuable information needed for study of the Greek words used in the New Testament—its texts, themes, and theology. This important tool offers the following features: • All the nearly 800 entries covering over 3,000 Greek words found in the full edition are included and presented in the same order and arrangement • The volume retains approximately 60 percent of the original edition, with the emphasis now on synchronic word study and usage in the Greek Old Testament, extrabiblical Second Temple literature, and especially the New Testament • The unique arrangement according to Greek words and use of English concepts is retained from the full edition and allows all users to access Greek terms regardless of their level of competence in Greek

NEW RELEASE

• This edition retains the significant semantic-domain tool that directs the reader to all the Greek words that have something to do with a particular English word or concept. For example, under the topic of “Resurrection,” there is a list of four Greek words that are related to that theme. The volume is thus an especially valuable tool for the study of themes and concepts in the New Testament

The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets Imagining the Minor Prophets’ World John Goldingay For many Christians reading the Old Testament, trying to understand Israel’s prophets is like listening to just one side of a phone conversation—you only get half the idea of it. You hear the answer, but how do you know what question the prophet is answering? In The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets, John Goldingay uncovers the questions behind the prophets’ answers that make their meaning and relevance intelligible to us. Written as a series of imaginary letters to the twelve Minor Prophets, The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets asks the kinds of questions that Hosea, Micah, Zechariah, and others were answering. The letters make clear the issues these prophets of Israel were dealing with or deliver the news they were responding to in their Old Testament writings. For example, • To Hosea: Why did you marry someone you knew might be unfaithful? • To Joel: It looks as if a locust epidemic is on the way: what should we do? • To Amos: What should we do about the war crimes of peoples around us? • To Obadiah: The Edomites have occupied our land and pushed us out: what’s up with that? • To Jonah: When is God going to fulfill his undertaking to destroy Nineveh? • To Micah: Will God always be angry with us as a people? • To Nahum: When is God going to fulfill his undertaking to destroy Nineveh? • To Habakkuk: When is God going to do something about injustice in Judah? • To Zephaniah: What do you mean by “the day of the Lord”? • To Haggai: When is God going to fulfill his promises about rebuilding the temple? • To Zechariah: Should Jeshua be High Priest when he has been in an unclean land? • To Malachi: Why does serving God seem pointless?

NEW RELEASE JUNE 2022 $22.99 | $13.79 ISBN 9780310125570 Softcover - 224 pages

These and other questions help readers peer behind the veil of Minor Prophets’ utterances and unlock their significance for today’s Christians. Each chapter: • • • •

begins with a brief paragraph of background about the prophet recounts questions or reports that have been addressed to the prophet in the form of a letter sums up message of the prophet responding to that question offers a brief comment or explanation after each passage

The Lost Letters to the Twelve Prophets offers an imaginative, fun, and engaging way for students, pastors, and all serious Bible readers get a better grip on what is happening in these often misunderstood biblical books and get more out of their Bible reading and study.

Typology—Understanding the Bible’s Promise-Shaped Patterns How Old Testament Expectations Are Fulfilled in Christ James M. Hamilton, Jr. When you read the Bible, have you ever noticed parallels between certain people, events, and institutions? Should we understand Noah as a kind of new Adam, and if so, does that somehow point us to the second Adam? How are we to interpret these similarities? In Typology—Understanding the Bible’s Promise-Shaped Patterns, author James M. Hamilton Jr. shows that the similarities we find in the Bible are based on genuine historical correspondence and demonstrates how we recognize them in the repetition of words and phrases, the parallels between patterns of events, and key thematic equivalences. When read in light of God’s promises, these historical correspondences spotlight further repetitions that snowball on one another to build escalating significance. This book stimulates fresh thinking on the relationship between the Old and New Testaments and will help pastors, preachers, and students better understand the dynamics of inner-biblical interpretation. It explores several of the “promise-shaped patterns” we see in the Old Testament including:

• Adam and New Adam • Prophets, Priests, and Kings • The Righteous Sufferer • Creation • Exodus and New Exodus • Marriage Hamilton shows that the prophets and sages of Israel learned to interpret Scripture from Moses and his writings. And by tracing the organic development of subsequent biblical patterns, he explains how these patterns created expectations that are fulfilled in Christ. Jesus himself taught his followers to understand the Old Testament in this way (Luke 24:45), and the authors of the New Testament taught the earliest followers of Jesus how to read the Bible through a typological lens. Typology—Understanding the Bible’s Promise-Shaped Patterns equips pastors, Bible teachers, students, and serious Bible readers to understand and embrace the typological interpretive perspective of the biblical authors. You will learn to read the Bible as it was intended by its original authors while cultivating a deeper love and appreciation for the Scriptures. JAMES M. HAMILTON, JR. (PhD, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is professor of biblical theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and preaching pastor at Kenwood Baptist Church. He is the author of God’s Glory in Salvation through Judgment and the Revelation volume in the Preaching the Word commentary series. He blogs at www.jimhamilton.info, and you can follow him on twitter @DrJimHamilton.

Read the Bible with Fresh Eyes and Discover Scripture’s Promised-Shaped Pattern. “Hamilton painstakingly assembles a veritable mountain of evidence for the argument that the biblical writers, under God, knew exactly what they were doing, and that from the beginning, they were consciously paving the way for the Christ to come. Every page deserves careful study, for so much ground is covered in such stimulating (and sparkling) detail.” —GARY MILLAR, principal, Queensland Theological College “Typology: Understanding the Bible’s Promise-Shaped Patterns shows forth both the unity of Scripture and the beautiful layers of its truths, and best of all it provides fresh lenses for beholding the glories of our Savior. Here readers may feast on the Bible’s teaching concerning the One who is the Last Adam, the Prophet like Moses, the Faithful High Priest whose work fulfills the Levitical Cult, the Royal Son of David, the Righteous Suffering Servant, and God With Us—read and rejoice!” —L. MICHAEL MORALES, professor of biblical studies, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary “With Typology, Hamilton continues to help readers become biblically literate by sensitizing them to the micro-level clues as to the nature of what the Bible is all about. If theology is faith seeking understanding, coming to grips with the unique scriptural imaginary that typology is and creates is an essential theological task.” —KEVIN J. VANHOOZER, research professor of systematic theology, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

The handbook takes an easy to navigate book-by-book approach. Specific criteria are applied to each allusion, providing readers with evaluation of the significance of each interpretive allusion. Minor allusions caused by style, figures of speech, and other minor elements are not included.

If you want to grow in your competence of reading Scripture and have a crackalackin good time doing it, read this book!” —AIMEE BYRD, author of Recovering from Biblical Manhood and Womanhood and Why Can’t We Be Friends? “Before you can talk about what the Bible says on “this” and “that,” it is important to process what the Bible is. Bird offers clarity and insight on big issues of inspiration, canon, and how to read the Bible wisely—all in a short seven chapters. I wish I had this book when I was first learning how to study the Bible. —NIJAY K. GUPTA, professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary Seven Things I Wish Christians Knew about the Bible is a short and readable introduction to the Bible—its origins, interpretation, truthfulness, and authority. SCHREINER, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary “This excellent volume is a treasure trove of explanations of difficult texts and answers to skeptics’ questions about the Bible. I highly commend this book to anyone who is struggling to believe that Scripture is genuinely God-breathed and inerrant.” —SAM STORMS, Bridgeway Church We are often told we can no longer assume that the Bible is trustworthy. From social media memes to popular scholarship, so many attacks have been launched on the believability of Scripture many have serious questions about the Bible’s credibility. If you struggle to answer questions like this and want to be more informed about the Bible, Why I Trust the Bible by renowned Bible scholar and translator William Mounce is for you. Mounce answers questions like these—and many others—is a reasoned and winsome way, providing up-to-date guidance based on the latest scholarship. THEOLOGY

Against Liberal Theology Putting the Brakes on Progressive Christianity Roger E. Olson Liberal Christian theology permeates mainlines denominations and progressive circles of the church to this day. But what is liberal theology? What are progressive Christians progressing toward, and what are they leaving behind? In Against Liberal Theology, professor and theologian Roger E. Olson warns progressive and mainline Christians against passively accepting the ideas of liberal theology without thinking through the consequences. In doing so, he examines the basic beliefs of the Christian faith, the main ideas of liberal theology, the way today’s mainline and progressive Christianity relates to classic liberalism, and how classic Christian faith and liberal Christianity connect and contradict. Following in the footsteps of Gresham Machen’s now-classic Christianity and Liberalism 100 years ago, Olson worries that liberal Christianity may not be Christianity but a different religion altogether. After examining the origins of liberal theology in the nineteenth century, Olson examines how liberal theology views: • Sources of Truth • The Bible • God • Jesus Christ • Salvation • The Future Gentle but direct, Olson provides an even-handed assessment and critique of the ideas of liberal theology and worries that liberal Christianity has strayed too far from the classic Christian orthodoxy of the fathers and creeds to be considered “Christian” at all.

“Bethany’s approach helps us appreciate that our thinking about the presence of suffering in the world is shaped by the assumptions we bring to our reflections. What if there are better ways of thinking that we haven’t explored yet? Bethany invites us to explore those options and work out what we think works best—and why.” —ALISTER MCGRATH, Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion University of Oxford Prepare to be engaged, enlightened, and surprised by this unique book on the theology of suffering that gives you control of the path you take through it. Similar to “pick your own path” novels, Why Is There Suffering? by Bethany Sollereder invites readers to follow branching paths on an exploration of theological topics like God’s existence, evil, and the final destiny of humans and animals. Readers will be introduced to many theological possibilities, both Christian and non-Christian, that they can explore and wrestle with to make informed decisions about their beliefs. They will have to choose which ones they find most plausible, and each decision will lead to further complexities and new questions, helping readers see the consequences of their theological choices.

“In this second and expanded edition of Systematic Theology, Wayne Grudem has made his classic work even better, more insightful, and an even greater resource for the Christian and the local church.” —SAM STORMS, PhD, lead pastor for preaching and vision, Bridgeway Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma The most widely used resource of the last 25 years in its area, Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem has been thoroughly revised and expanded (all 57 chapters) for the first time while retaining the features that have made it the standard in its field: clear explanations, an emphasis on each doctrine’s scriptural basis, and practical applications to daily life. Part of the brilliance of Systematic Theology over the years has been its simplicity and ease of use. Each chapter follows the same structure. First, there is discussion of the doctrine being considered, such as justification or the Trinity or the deity of Christ. An explanation of that doctrine’s biblical support and possible objections follow. Personal application and key terms to know for personal growth are then provided. Chapters also include a Scripture memory passage, references to other literature on the topic, and suggested hymns and worship songs. ALSO AVAILABLE

With an intentionally light-hearted and adventurous approach to a heavy topic, this accessible and winsome book is a helpful introduction to the problem of suffering and the most common responses to it. BETHANY N. SOLLEREDER (PhD, University of Exeter) is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford. The author of God, Evolution, and Animal Suffering, she writes regularly for journals and popular publications including Christian Century and BioLogos.org.

NEW ST UD IE S IN D O GMATIC S M I C H A E L A L L E N A N D S C O T T R . S WA I N , G E N E R A L E D I T O R S

The New Studies in Dogmatics series seeks to retrieve the riches of Christian doctrine for the sake of , contemporary theological renewal. Following in the tradition of G. C. Berkouwer s Studies in Dogmatics, this series will provide thoughtful, concise, and readable treatments of major theological topics, expressing the biblical, creedal, and confessional shape of Christian doctrine for a contemporary evangelical audience. The editors and contributors share a common conviction that the way forward in constructive systematic theology lies in building upon the foundations laid in the church’s historic understanding of the Word of God as professed in its creeds, councils, and confessions, and by its most trusted teachers.

Four Views on Heaven Michael E. Wittmer, General Editor Contributors: John S. Feinberg, J. Richard Middleton, Michael Allen, Peter Kreeft Christians from a variety of denominations and traditions are in middle of an important conversation about the final destiny of the saved. Scholars such as N. T. Wright and J. Richard Middleton have pushed back against the traditional view of heaven, and now some Christians are pushing back against them for fear that talk about the earthiness of our final hope distracts our attention from Jesus. In the familiar Counterpoints format, Four Views on Heaven brings together a well-rounded discussion and highlights similarities and differences of the current views on heaven. Each author presents the strongest case for their position, followed by responses and a rejoinder that model a respectful and irenic dialogue. Positions and contributors include: • A Traditional Evangelical Protestant Perspective: John S. Feinberg. Our destiny is to leave earth and live forever in heaven where we will rest, worship, and serve God. • A New Earth Perspective: J. Richard Middleton. The saved will live for ever with Jesus on this restored planet, enjoying ordinary human activities in our redeemed state. • A Heaven on Earth Perspective: Michael Allen. Seeking to highlight the strengths and avoid the weaknesses of the heavenly and earthly views, Allen believes that believers will be on earth, but totally locked into Jesus in unceasing praise. • A Catholic Perspective: Peter Kreeft. The beatific vision is the ultimate, direct self-communication of God to the individual. It stresses the intellectual component of salvation, though it encompasses the whole of human experience of joy, happiness coming from seeing God finally face-to-face.

Southwestern Journal of Theology Book of the Year in Church History/Biography

“The Global Church provides a beautiful tapestry of both the historical and theological growth of the church that sheds deep and thoughtful insights into the whole of church history. Every serious student of church history should read this book.” —TIMOTHY C. TENNENT, president and professor of world Christianity, Asbury Theological Seminary The Christian church of the early centuries spread throughout much of Asia, Africa, and Europe, spoke many languages, was situated within diverse cultural settings, and had varied worship practices; yet it maintained a vital unity on core teachings. The Global Church—The First Eight Centuries is an ideal introduction to the patristic era that broadens the narrative often recounted and places it more firmly in its various cultural contexts. Students of the early church, formal and informal alike, will appreciate the fresh approach and depth of insight it provides.

“Christian history needs to belong to everybody. This book will help it do just that.” —THE REV. DR. JENNIFER WOODRUFF TAIT, editor, Christian History magazine Bruce Shelley’s classic history of the church brings the story of global Christianity into the twenty-first century. Like a skilled screenwriter, Shelley begins each chapter with three elements: characters, setting, plot. Taking readers from the early centuries of the church up through the modern era he tells his readers a story of actual people, in a particular situation, taking action or being acted upon, provides a window into the circumstances and historical context, and from there develops the story of a major period or theme of Christian history. “Horton offers not only a penetrating analysis of our current feardriven cultural moment, but also provides a way forward that is both transcendent and timely.” —JULIUS J. KIM, PhD, president, The Gospel Coalition

With 24-hour news cycles and constant immersion in a world of screens and social media, we are bombarded by news reports about layoffs, the dangers of climate change, and threats to our health. Exploited by politicians who crave our alliance, fear is used to breed hatred and further divide us from one another. In Recovering Our Sanity, author Michael Horton argues that we need to resist the pull of our fear-driven culture. He mines the riches of Scripture and theology to help us better understand how a proper fear of God— liberates us from enslavement to the paralyzing fears that drive the disintegration of our society, our families, and our own lives.

Q

What led you to write your book, Talking About Race? How does this book connect with your own life story?

A

I had originally set out to write a different book. It would’ve been a book that sought to give practical guidance on where evangelicals (generally) and white evangelicals (specifically) could begin to combat racism. But in the midst of beginning that project, Ahmaud Arbery was gunned down and COVID-19 erupted. In the wake of all this, I heard an African-American actor talking about how he felt like he had to wear a mask in white spaces, not just during COVID but (metaphorically speaking) during his entire life. That mask-wearing really resonated with me. I found that as a pastor of a multi-ethnic church, I had people from all different ethnicities “wearing a mask” when it came to the conversation about race. No one felt like they could be honest with “the other side” in this conversation. Yet honest conversation is the very thing we need in order to make progress. So, I changed the idea for the book, and I sought to help sincere and well-meaning Christians engender better conversations.

Q

Your book traces a fictional narrative about a racial tragedy as a way of opening up the discussion? What do you see as the advantage of this approach?

A

Stories are powerful. Stories stick. Just ask Nathan the prophet and David the King (See 2 Samuel 12). Stories allow us to enter into the experiences of others. I think this is, in no small part, what made Isabel Wilkerson’s The Warmth of Other Suns so powerful—it was full of powerful stories. Race and racism are complex topics, so I needed more than just a two-sided, black-and-white didactic medium to convey my message. Stories allow for more complexity, for grey.

A Conversation with

ISAAC ADAMS

Q

What do you hope readers will take away from a reading of the book?

A

My main prayer is that churches would be helped by the book. This conversation is tearing many churches apart. It’s easy to think we should just ignore it, and I think the Enemy would be pleased if we did. But my prayer is that church members take from the book practical insights that help them lean into this conversation. After all, if we can’t even love our fellow church members through these issues, how are we going to love our neighbors through them?

Q

What do you see as the greatest challenge for the church today when it comes to racial justice and our relationships with one another?

A

We have, for too long, remained segregated along worldly, tribal lines—and to make matters worse, we are too preoccupied with winning a conversation rather than having one. Imagine a church in which people could have disagreements and still love one another. It seems we have followed the world’s method of loving those who love us and think like us. Jesus was right when he asked, “what good is that?” (Luke 6:32)

CHRISTIANITY & CULTURE

Talking about Race Gospel Hope for Hard Conversations Issac Adams In this honest and hopeful book, pastor Isaac Adams doesn’t just show you how to have the race conversation, he begins it for you. By offering a fictional, racially charged tragedy in order to understand varying perspectives and responses, he examines what is at stake if we ignore this conversation, and why there’s just as much at stake in how we have that discussion, especially across color lines—that is, with people of another ethnicity. This unique approach offers insight into how to listen to one another well and seek unity in Christ. Looking to God’s Word, Christians can find wisdom to speak gracefully and truthfully about racism for the glory of God, the good of their neighbors, and the building up of the church. Some feel that the time for talking is over, and that we’ve heard all this before. But given how polarized American society is becoming—its churches not exempt—fresh attention on the dysfunctional communication between ethnicities is more than warranted. Adams offers an invitation to faithfully combat the racism so many of us say we hate and maintain the unity so many of us say we want. Together we can learn to speak in such a way that we show a divided world a different world. TABLE OF CONTENTS

Religious Freedom in a Secular Age A Christian Case for Liberty, Equality, and Secular Government Michael F. Bird In Religious Freedom in a Secular Age author Michael Bird argues that religious freedom should not be preserved by churches entrusting themselves to the protection of a Trumpian leader draped in the apparel of civil religion, nor should they consent to allowing religious freedom to be steam rolled by progressive activists with their increasing hostility towards people of faith. What is needed instead is a better appreciation for how secularism can work to create space for people of all faiths and none, to resolve tense relationships between church and state, and come to a fair and equitable settlement when religious liberty and LGBTI+ rights come into conflict. Bird tackles complicated debates about the nature, extent, and limitations of religious freedom with a view to encouraging Christians to stand up for their faith in a post-Christian world, in a way that is humble and gentle, yet also courageous. We’ve lost ourselves. Adrift in the world, many Christians have their identity completely wrapped up in work, and their definition of the “good life” is financial success. Fewer are staying committed to the Christian faith, finding it difficult to reconcile their experience with their longings and desires. With so much uncertainty, where can we find a true vision of the good life? Learning the Good Life speaks to this malaise with trusted voices from the past, inviting Christians into an age-old conversation with some of history’s wisest hearts and minds as their dialogue companions. It features classic writings from a diverse lineup of over 40 writers and thinkers, including Confucius, Augustine, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, W. E. B. DuBois, Flannery O’Connor, and Wendell Berry. These texts are introduced by experts from a variety of Christian colleges and universities to provide a broader, richer, and more cohesive narrative in which Christians may participate. Each text is accompanied by discussion questions to provoke further thought and contemplation and to facilitate discussion when used in groups. Christians seeking a deeper connection to the wisdom of the past will find in this book a more cohesive and beautiful vision of the good life.

Did you know Rembrandt’s The Storm on the Sea of Galilee was stolen in 1990 and has never been recovered? Did you know Vincent van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime? Did you know Caravaggio murdered several people while he was painting some of the most glorious paintings the world has ever known? Rembrandt Is in the Wind, by Russ Ramsey, is an invitation to discover some of the world’s most celebrated artists and works, through which we can witness the gospel of Christ in a way that speaks to the struggles and longings common to the human experience. The book is part art history, part biblical study, part philosophy, and part analysis of the human experience—but it’s all story. The lives of the artists in this book illustrate the struggle of living in this world and point to the beauty of the redemption available to us in Christ. Each story is different. Some conclude with resounding triumph while others end in struggle. But all of them raise important questions about humanity’s hunger and capacity for glory, and all of them teach us to see and love beauty.

2021 Englewood Review of Books Book of the Year

Since the Reformation, Protestants have confessed that the church is reformed and always reforming. But do we really believe this? Especially when it comes to sexuality? What if, in trying to be faithful to the beauty of God’s design for man and woman, the church has instead latched onto a pagan concept of our nature and missed the theological meaning of our sexes? We have inadvertently robbed both men and women of the dignity of personhood as created in the image of God. Then we miss the beautiful message that our bodies, and our whole selves as men and women, tell: the story of the great joy in which Christ received the gift of his bride, the church. Through an exploration of the Song of Songs, Aimee Byrd examines what this often-ignored book can teach us about Christ, his church, man, and woman. The church is ripe for a sexual reformation, and recovering a good theological footing is imperative to it. Byrd invites you to enter into the Song’s treasures as its lyrics reveal the point of it all—not a list of roles and hierarchy, but a love song. ALSO AVAILABLE

In Subversive Witness, Dominique DuBois Gilliard inspires readers to reimagine how they think about privilege and exercise power. Instead of denying the existence of privilege or feeling incapacitated by it, Christians can learn to wield privilege subversively as an instrument to advance the kingdom and sacrificially love our neighbors, particularly those who have been disenfranchised by the abuse of power. Dominique illustrates how the faithful witness of biblical figures, from Esther to Zacchaeus, provides a blueprint for modern believers who desire to pick up the baton as drum majors for justice. By embodying Scripture’s subversive call to leverage—and at times forsake—privilege, readers will learn to love their neighbors sacrificially, enact systemic change, and grow more Christlike as citizens of God’s kingdom. A conversation with Dolores Morris Q Tell us about your path to philosophy. A

My first love was songwriting, so I began college as an English major with a minor in music. It wasn’t until my senior year that I discovered that the big questions I loved to pursue both musically and through fiction get rigorous attention in philosophy. I was sold! I did a postgraduate year for the second major, went on to Notre Dame for graduate school, and I’ve never looked back. (As an added bonus, I attend a church with an incredible music program— so I still get to make music on the side!)

Q What led you to write your book Believing Philosophy? How does this book connect with your own life story? A

When I came to philosophy, I was really struggling with my faith. Although I attended a secular college, the study of philosophy was a spiritual lifeline for me. At the same time, I have encountered a fair amount of skepticism on two fronts; atheists who believe Christianity to be irrational and Christians who believe philosophy to be atheistic. I wrote this book to push back against those misconceptions and to, instead, defend a philosophically rich, rationally grounded Christian faith.

Q What do you hope readers will take away from reading your book? A

"It’s a little intense, but 100% accurate."

An increased confidence in the rational grounding of their faith. So often, people are afraid to ask questions out of the fear that there are no good answers. If Christianity is true, then this fear is misplaced. If God is the source of all wisdom, then when we seek wisdom we ought to draw nearer to God. More practically speaking, I hope that readers find small communities with which to read and discuss these topics, and that wonderful conversations result!

Believing Philosophy A Guide to Becoming a Christian Philosopher Dolores G. Morris “Morris dismantles the myth that philosophy is a luxury for those with spare time for pointless speculation about unanswerable questions. She shows that philosophy, far from being irrelevant or hostile to faith, can be good—even invaluable—for one’s faith.” —ROBERT GARCIA, associate professor of philosophy, Baylor University “Believing Philosophy is a wonderful introduction to philosophy...Morris’ treatment of complex philosophical questions of interest to Christians perfectly balances accessibility and nuance. She is especially insightful about the power, and the limits, of arguments. I will definitely read and discuss this book with Christian undergraduates and I know that we will all benefit tremendously.” —KYLA EBELS-DUGGAN, associate professor of philosophy, Northwestern University Believing Philosophy introduces Christians to the tools and resources of philosophy, helping them to understand, articulate, and defend their faith in an age of unbelief. In part 1, author Dolores G. Morris explains why Christians should read and study philosophy. She begins by introducing readers to the long tradition of Christian philosophy, going on to explain the basic resources of philosophical reasoning: the role and aim of reason; distinctions between truth, reason, and provability; learning to read like a philosopher; and the fundamentals of philosophical arguments. In part 2, Morris explores a sampling of philosophical topics relevant to the Christian faith. These chapters focus on two main arguments: the problem of evil and the moral argument for the existence of God. The problem of evil is often invoked as an argument for atheism. In response, the moral argument considers the reality of not only evil but of moral values in general as evidence for the existence of God. In evaluating these arguments, she also introduces students to a variety of Christian philosophical positions, including skeptical theism, the free will defense, reformed epistemology, Christian ethical theories, and a number of theodicies and defenses of the faith.

“Stanglin in Ethics Beyond Rules lays bare all the pseudofoundations of the moral relativism that has gripped our culture. Tragically, even the church has been caught in the quicksand of this moral malaise and needs a fresh vision and renewed understanding of biblical ethics. Stanglin provides it in a refreshing and compelling way, focusing on many of the most pressing issues of our day. It is engagingly written, persuasively argued, and decisively relevant. Every Christian should purchase two copies, one to read, and one to give to a friend, because this book is that good.” —TIMOTHY C. TENNENT, president and professor of world Christianity, Asbury Theological Seminary How should Christians live? How should they approach today’s difficult moral questions? In Ethics Beyond Rules, Keith Stanglin answers those questions with: What does love require? Ethics Beyond Rules is a clear and accessible introduction for thoughtful Christians who want to lead moral lives. Stanglin’s easy-to-understand Christian ethical system doesn’t have a long list of rules to follow but instead bases moral decision making on love. This resource does not attempt to answer every ethical question and social issue present in today’s culture but provides a model to use when reasoning through concrete issues.

The Faithful Apologist Rethinking the Role of Persuasion in Apologetics K. Scott Oliphint “The Faithful Apologist comes from the biblically infused thought and heart of the careful reformed theologian Scott Oliphint . . . it provides meticulous theological reflection on how persuasion takes place by and through God’s word and the measured use of classical rhetorical realities. This is a foundational book, an indispensable prolegomenon to persuasion, and will serve the church well, not only in personal evangelism, but in the preaching of the gospel to a lost world!” —R. KENT HUGHES, Senior Pastor Emeritus of College Church, Wheaton, Illinois “Scott Oliphint reminds us that while the church is looking for better apologetics, God himself is looking for better apologists..” —DR. SINCLAIR B. FERGUSON, Ligonier Teaching Fellow and Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary Christianity is a religion of persuasion. How can we defend the faith persuasively without reducing apologetics to a simplistic formula? As Christians, we’re called to give an answer for the hope we have in Christ. But too often, this task can feel like we’re doing PR work for God, limiting our apologetic efforts to a series of strategies and tactics. In The Faithful Apologist, Scott Oliphint shows that this doesn’t have to be the case. He provides a cross-centered foundation for Christians to explain their faith in a welcoming and winsome manner that avoids any burden to “sell” Christianity to non-Christians. Drawing from the rich tradition of Reformed apologetics, Oliphint proposes a marriage between wisdom and persuasion in faith conversations. He shows that, when our faith is grounded in the triune God and his sovereignty, our attempts to defend it will grow more confident and convincing. Accessible and thoroughly rooted in Scripture, this book takes the anxiety out of apologetics by revealing that success is not measured in the number of minds we change but in our faithfulness to God, the Divine Persuader and the Faithful Apologist.

From the Garden of Eden to the garden where John wrote the book of Revelation, discerning God is a key them is the Scriptures. Today, however, spiritual discernment in often reserved for major ministry or organizational decisions, like calling the right pastor or determining where to plant a church. For others it’s a tool used to spiritualize every single decision: God, what brand of paper towels do you want me to buy this week? We have forgotten what spiritual discernment should actually look like: practicing a preference for God. In The Discerning Life, Stephen A. Macchia upends these limited understandings of spiritual discernment. Through quirky and relatable stories about the home he and his wife have shared for nearly four decades, Macchia invites readers to recognize God’s loving voice and respond to his gentle beckoning. When we understand spiritual discernment as a lifestyle rather than a tool, we will lean into the mission, mandate, and message of the whole counsel of God.

A Doubter’s Guide to World Religions A Fair and Friendly Introduction to the History, Beliefs, and Practices of the Big Five John Dickson “John Dickson’s Doubter’s Guides are unique resources. In a secular, ideology-driven age, they promise remarkably balanced, even-handed, fair-minded presentations of all the world religions, and of Christian beliefs about Jesus Christ—all deeply informed by the primary sources. I can’t recommend these books enough.” —TIMOTHY J. KELLER The world is a very religious place. Wherever you look, people are worshipping, praying, believing, following, even dying for their faith. But are all religions the same? Do they all call on the same God simply using different names? Are their beliefs and practices simply cultural expressions of the same spiritual longings? Written in John Dickson’s characteristically engaging and readable style, this book presents each of the world’s five major religions in their best light, carefully outlining the history, belief systems and spiritual practices of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam so that the interested doubter can explore their similarities and differences. For believers and doubters alike, A Doubter’s Guide to World Religions provides a fair and friendly introduction.

Topical Preaching in a Complex World How to Proclaim Truth and Relevance at the Same Time Sam Chan and Malcolm Gill “This is a book I have longed to have. Every preacher should step into the pulpit confidently with its wisdom in hand.” —DARRELL L. BOCK, Dallas Theological Seminary “This is the best homiletics book on the topic, bar none. Read it and respond to its wisdom for yourself and for the sake of your congregation.” —MATTHEW D. KIM, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Sooner or later, every preacher will come upon a situation where they need to preach a topical sermon. Yet few are taught to preach topically. Even preachers who are gifted in expositing the Scriptures may struggle to deliver a topical sermon that is engaging, culturally relevant, and true to the biblical text. Worse, many pastors worry these messages undermine confidence in the Bible or its authority, leading to a human-centered rather than a God-focused sermon. But that doesn’t have to be the case. In Topical Preaching in a Complex World, Sam Chan and Malcolm Gill address the biblical, theological, and cultural reasons preachers should add topical sermons to their preaching repertoire. Then they answer important questions like these: • How do you approach a topic with the proper interpretative lens? • How can you speak to two or more audiences with the same sermon? • What should you consider theologically, culturally, and pastorally in your preparation? • How do you trace the topic back to Christ? • How can you better connect with your audience?

MALCOLM GILL (PhD, Dallas Theological Seminary) serves on the ministry team at St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Sydney, Australia. Prior to pastoral ministry, Malcolm taught preaching at Dallas Theological Seminary and Sydney Missionary and Bible College. A Simple Guide to Experience Miracles Instruction and Inspiration for Living Supernaturally in Christ J. P. Moreland “A fascinating tour of God’s works today. I wish I could have read this faith-encouraging book on miracles before writing mine!” —CRAIG S. KEENER, Asbury Theological Seminary “Full of numerous fascinating faith-building reports of miracles that God continues to work even today. Highly recommended!” —WAYNE GRUDEM, Phoenix Seminary A Simple Guide to Experience Miracles will give you confidence in and awareness of the supernatural realm as you learn how to flourish spiritually by experiencing more miraculous interventions in your life and ministry. Internationally renowned philosopher J. P. Moreland looks at the nature of miracles and explains why those in the church should humbly expect to see more of these miraculous works of God than they do.

While miraculous healings have occurred frequently throughout church history, Moreland provides data showing how the last fifty years have seen a massive outbreak of miracles and supernatural activity. Today, he argues, the church should humbly expect to see more of these miraculous works of God than we do. Moreland looks at topics like: • The relationship between sickness and suffering, along with two different ways to pray for healing • How to discern clearly the difference between a genuine miracle and a mere coincidence • How to increase your faith that petitionary prayer really works and what to make of unanswered prayer • Six ways God speaks to us and advice for hearing God wisely and biblically • The role angels play in our lives, how they appear to us, and how to combat demonic influence • The biblical basis for most Near-Death Experiences and what we can learn from them

J. P. MORELAND is distinguished professor of philosophy at Talbot School of Theology and director of Eidos Christian Center. With degrees in philosophy, theology, and chemistry, Dr. Moreland has taught theology and philosophy at several schools throughout the US. He has authored or coauthored many books, including Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview; Christianity and the Nature of Science; Scaling the Secular City; Does God Exist?; The Lost Virtue of Happiness; and Body and Soul. He is coeditor of Jesus Under Fire: Modern Scholarship Reinvents the Historical Jesus. His work appears in publications such as Christianity Today, Faith and Philosophy, Philosophia Christi, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, and The American Philosophical Quarterly. Dr. Moreland served with Campus Crusade for ten years, planted two churches, and has spoken on over 200 college campuses and in hundreds of churches.

“God is God. We are not. He is limitless. We are limited. On the surface, this sounds depressing. But as this book makes clear, this truth is wonderfully freeing as it eradicates the life-sucking pressure to be everything to everyone, everywhere. I’m so glad Sean wrote this book!” —JORDAN RAYNOR, national bestselling author of Redeeming Your Time, Master of One, and Called to Create

Not In It To Win It is a relatable and practical resource that guides readers by focusing on the priorities of Jesus, even as we are navigating the complicated and emotionally-charged terrain of today’s cultural divides and hot-button disagreements. Rather than viewing Christianity through the filter of partisanship, Andy challenges readers to evaluate all of life through the wide-angle lens of faith.

“The Good News of Our Limits is a refreshing encouragement to embrace how God intentionally designed us as finite human beings. Through relatable stories and illustrations, McGever helps us all discover joy in our inadequacy.” —DREW HILL, pastor and award-winning author of Alongside: Loving Teenagers with the Gospel

Jesus called his followers to obey a new command, to love others in the same way he has loved us. Instead of asserting our rights or fighting for power, we are to ask ourselves: what does love require of me? Don’t settle for winning a game that God isn’t playing. Instead seek to live in a way that your life makes a difference for others, showcasing the love of God to the world.

In The Good News of Our Limits, professor and longtime ministry leader Sean McGever reveals the wonderful news that we cannot do, be, or know all of the things that others expect of us—and that we often expect from ourselves. Nor should we. As it turns out, these expectations are not God’s expectations. The freeing truth is that God created us with limitations, and he did it for a reason. God is the only all-powerful, all-present, and all-knowing person, and we are not. We can only know and do some things, and we can only be in one place at a time. And that is enough. Accepting this truth frees us to find greater peace and joy, and somewhat surprisingly, greater effectiveness in life. SEAN MCGEVER (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is area director for Paradise Valley Arizona Young Life and an adjunct faculty at Grand Canyon University. He speaks, teaches, and ministers across the United States, Canada, and the UK.

Communicator, author, and pastor ANDY STANLEY founded Atlanta-based North Point Ministries in 1995. Today, NPM consists of six churches in the Atlanta area and a network of more than 90 churches around the globe that collectively serve nearly 185,000 people weekly. As host of Your Move with Andy Stanley, which delivers over seven million messages each month through television and podcasts, and author of more than 20 books, including The New Rules for Love, Sex & Dating; Ask It; How to Be Rich; Deep & Wide; and Irresistible, he is considered one of the most influential pastors in America. Andy and his wife, Sandra, have three grown children and live near Atlanta.

ENDNOTES: A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

EndNotes: A Letter from the Editor Writing is a solo act, right? Of course it is! And yet every author knows just how much input, insightful comments, and feedback from various individuals helped to shape their writing and inform the final manuscript. Editing also has its solo moments. I have days where I read, mark corrections, read some more, do a bit of fixing, keep reading, and repeat. Those days are what dreams are made of for editors, especially when accompanied by a foamy latte, but let me pull back the curtain to the long view of the editorial process—from the moment a book proposal lands in my inbox to that final click of the button that sends the manuscript to the printer. The process is anything but a solo endeavor. When I receive a book proposal, a team of us—select editors, publishers, and marketers—gather and discuss it. After we decide to move forward with the idea, the team meets again, usually with a slightly higher share of marketing people. The team projects sales numbers of the proposed book and then communicates these numbers to a host of individuals responsible for selling the book across the globe. I then kickoff a contract request. This request gets personally signed by individuals in publishing, marketing, and managing, and then it is sent off to our contracts department. Our internal administration also stays in the loop so that the future author is set up in our database and benefits from all the Zondervan Academic perks! When the author finishes the manuscript and it arrives in my inbox, I review it carefully and give it a macro edit. When it’s ready to move on, I pass the manuscript off to our in-house stylist who preps the manuscript for typesetting. In the meantime, our visual editor checks to make sure supplied images meet our publishing standards. Once the manuscript is styled, the copyediting begins! Here’s where I read, correct, sip on my coffee, keep reading, etc.

Nancy Erickson, PhD Executive Editor Biblical Languages, Textbooks, Reference Tools, and Seedbed Resources

When the manuscript is ready, I send it back to the author and to an outside academic proofreader holding a PhD in the field. After their review, I send the manuscript to our typesetter to create a design sample. Elements of this sample are inspired by the drafted cover, which editors and marketers would have already generated in connection with our cover designer. Once the sample design pages are approved, our typesetter flows the entire book. This is when we all start getting excited. Typeset pages are the best! I then send the manuscript back to the author one last time and have a different outside academic proofreader review it. After this, we are getting close. Our marketing team may send out the typeset pages for early promotion and endorsements, and we also create indices from these pages. The last stages involve final formatting checks with our managing editorial team and some last-minute tasks from me and the author. Meanwhile, the front and back covers are being routed through our team for individual approval. And then we hit the file-tovendor date, when the manuscript and cover, with one last click of the button, are sent to the printer. Coveted copies then await arrival at our doorsteps. By my estimate, more than twenty-five individuals from our team have had an important role in getting a book into print, and most of those individuals interacted with the content multiple times! The long view of the editorial process with Zondervan Academic is a masterclass in collaboration and care. It’s built into our process—many hands yielding excellent and thoughtful work. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to my solo act. The foamy latte and my reading glasses are calling.
