LETTER FROM THE CEO

With every spring that comes and goes at Zoo Miami, we are reminded of the beauty of nature’s circle of life. This refreshing reminder encourages us to celebrate every animal, guest and Zoo Miami staff member that keeps us all connected.

We enter into this spring with much to be grateful for, including a healthy litter of five African painted dogs. While every birth is one to celebrate, this is truly special as it is a crucial part of a planned breeding program to sustain the survival of these highly endangered animals! Then, we also welcomed two new baby giraffes – the 53rd and 54th born at Zoo Miami – and the very first birth of a twist-necked turtle at Zoo Miami.

Of course, the natural circle of life also means that we must unfortunately say goodbye to animals as well. This past February, we lost “Cita”, a nearly 51-year-old female African elephant. Losing an animal is never easy, especially for our animal care staff, who often form strong connections and bonds with them. But of course, we honor Cita’s memory by remembering her with great respect and fondness.

Special thanks to Ana VeigaMilton and the Zoo Miami staff, for without these people, this publication would not be possible.

Spring also brings many opportunities for us to help our guests form fun new memories with their families. Our popular Egg Safari will be back this Easter, with egg hunts, games and more to enjoy, then our Party for the Planet Earth Day celebration with tons of educational activities. For the grown-ups, Brew at the Zoo will also be back this May.

While each year and season sees changes at Zoo Miami, our dedication to animal care, education and conservation remains steadfast. It is with the support of our loyal and generous donors, Members and fans that we learn from each change and continue to grow.

Honoring Cita

Each and every one of the animal residents at Zoo Miami is truly cared for and appreciated. We take great pride in the work of our animal care staff, who works closely with our animals, even forming special bonds with them. Of course, just as we celebrate all of the different forms of life that we witness here, we must also accept the losses that complete the circle of life. The attachments we form to our animals make this extremely difficult at times, but we take these moments as an opportunity to honor them.

It is with great sadness that we said goodbye to “Cita,” a nearly 51-year-old female African elephant, on February 22, 2019. She died that evening after having a confrontation with “Peggy”, another African elephant, in which she was knocked down and unable to recover. Cita went through an extensive necropsy to

help determine the cause of her death. At the time of the tests, there were indications that a blood clot may have contributed, though some of the test results are not yet known.

Cita arrived at Zoo Miami on April 19, 2016 from the Virginia Zoo, along with another female elephant named “Lisa. “ They joined our resident African elephants Peggy and Mabel and the new herd was affectionately nicknamed “The Golden Girls” due to their age, as they were all over 40 years old. Lisa has since died of a mesenteric torsion - a twisting of t he intestines around the mesenteric axis - in August 2017.

Cita’s passing is a very difficult time for the Zoo Miami family, and the Virginia Zoo family, where Cita spent decades of her life. We honor and remember her with love and respect.

6

This past February, Zoo Miami welcomed two new baby giraffes! The male calf was born on February 13 to four-year-old mother “Zuri,” and the female calf on February 20 to 12-year-old mother “Mia.” Both are yet to be named. This is Zuri’s first baby, and Mia’s sixth!

Baby Giraffes BORN AT ZOO MIAMI

The two newborns were at first held inside a holding area with their mothers, allowing them time to bond properly before introducing them to the herd. They made their exhibit debut together on February 27, 2019, and are now out in their new homes daily so guests are welcome to visit them!

They are the 53rd and 54th giraffes born in Zoo Miami history.

There are a lot of moving parts involved when it comes to running a zoo – including the animals themselves! Animal transport happens daily, from Vet Clinic visits to our ambassador animals traveling for outreach, to more complicated transcontinental imports (like when “Ongard” the Asian elephant came all the way from Australia!).

Zoo Miami has the distinction of being the annual host of the “Animal Transport Course for Animal Care Professionals” under the auspices of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). This training course is a community of industry professionals, guest speakers, course instructors, and wildlife agencies volunteering their time to provide their expertise. All of these professionals come together to discuss logistics on how to safely transport wildlife!

BORN AT ZOO MIAMI

AFRICAN PAINTED DOG PUPPIES !

On January 23, 2019, Zoo Miami welcomed a litter of highly endangered African painted dog puppies! The litter of five (one male and four females) was born to two-year-old mother “Little Foot” and sevenyear-old father “Evander”. This being Little Foot’s first litter, Zoo staff was very cautious in making sure she and her pups were not disturbed for the first several weeks of the puppies’ lives. They were left to properly bond together in seclusion in a den, with staff observing through cameras.

After weeks of observation, the puppies were deemed ready for their neonatal exams on March 6. The procedures included collecting blood, general physical exams, deworming treatments, and the placement of a microchip for identification.

At six weeks old, the puppies ranged in weight from six to seven and a half pounds.

8

Once their exams were done, the puppies, along with mom and dad, were allowed onto their exhibit for the first time! They were a bit hesitant at first, but then followed their mom out. While Evander seemed very interested in the puppies, Little Foot wasn’t keen on letting him get too close, so he observed from a distance while the new family explored their home. The puppies are expected to have limited access to their exhibit each day, under close observation, until they have learned to navigate this new space without any issues.

These are the first successful births of African painted dogs at Zoo Miami in nearly 20 years. This is a crucial part of a planned breeding program to help ensure the survival of these highly endangered animals. With less than 6,000 left in the wild, the African painted dog is one of the most endangered carnivores on the planet.
