through the lens of
reid page I started taking photos when I was six with my parents’ point-andclick film camera. You know the type—the one with the little foursided flash cube. My favourite subjects were gophers. I wasn’t very good at sneaking up on them, so I had a lot of “See . . . the gopher’s right there, Mom!” type of pictures The Sunshine Coast has been home for me and my wife and daughter for fourteen years. In the last four years, I have pursued photography seriously, loving all of the opportunities I get with my camera. My day job has me travelling up and down the Coast, so I get to see many wonderful locations for shooting. I love experimenting—from studio shoots to long-exposure landscape work—and photographing the productions of local dance groups and schools. Dance is by far the most challenging photography I have done. I’m happy with the results so far, but I feel there is still a lot more to learn. My ”go-to” creatures for photography are bugs and birds. Dragonflies and herons are both majestic and graceful hunters that can be a little trying to photograph, but worth all the patience in the world when I get to capture the right moment. At the top of my photography list, however, are photos of my daughter. It’s pure fun. — Reid Page

This year’s 7th Annual Sunshine Coast Mushroom Festival will be held October 16, 17 and 18, with events up and down the Sunshine Coast. Hosted by the Society for the Hunting, Recognition and Observation of Mushrooms (SHROOM), it promises to be another biologically diverse and fascinating event for both locals and visitors.

festival 2015
From mushroom identification tables to demonstrations about using mushrooms in cooking, the dyeing of fabric and yarn, and tapping into the medical powers of the fungal world, the Shroomfest is a great way to get acquainted with the mushrooms and fungi of the Pacific Northwest. Knowledgeable expert foragers will be on hand to identify mushrooms brought in by festival visitors and to talk about the basics of mushrooming, making this event one of the safest ways to introduce yourself to this fascinating leisure activity and the worldclass science behind it. Also featured will be vendors with unique mushroom products, kids’ activities, and many fabulous door and raffle prizes. This year’s guest is renowned forager and chef, Langdon Cook, author of The Mushroom Hunters: On the Trail of Underground America and Fat of the Land: Adventures of a 21st Century Forager. His books are rich with the science and lore of edible fungi—from the seductive chanterelles to exotic porcini. Catch his presentations at Davis Bay Community Hall and the Botanical Gardens in Sechelt. A hotly anticipated part of the Mushroom Festival is the mushroom-themed menu offerings by local restaurants. See the list of participating restaurants and the schedule of festival events at www.schroom.org.

The beauty of the landscape contains a narrative. I listen and am heard. It is a starting point of my conversation with our forest as I experience it, living here on the West Coast. The cedar tree equals grandness for me. Its strength and height create a cathedral and spiritual space under its canopy. I appreciate the raw, unorganized chaos found in that space . . . the renewal, and the growth over growth. — Marleen Vermeulen, artist
DEAN VAN’T SCHIP
“
Sunshine Coast artists selected for the 2015 curated Sechelt Arts Festival Exhibition were asked, “What does cedar mean to you?” That began their “art as process” journey as they thoughtfully considered the impact of the cedar tree on our communities and in their individual lives. The results will be presented at the Art and the Six Senses of Cedar exhibition, October 16–25 at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt. Influenced by different cultural backgrounds and the senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, and spirit, this experiential exhibition will fascinate and engage all ages and senses. The artists: Gordon Halloran, Marlene Lowden, Giorgio Magnanensi, Kirk Michael, Vern Bahti Minard, Linda Nardelli, Kez Sherwood, Jessica Silvey, Robert Studer, Dean van’t Schip, and Marleen Vermeulen.

the story of cedar
The historical side of cedar will be presented at the tems swiya museum with téxémay—the Tree of Life, exploring the myriad uses of cedar in shíshálh and Coast Salish everyday life since time immemorial. The festival is also honoured to present legendary Canadian dance artist Margie Gillis in her first performance on the Sunshine Coast, Saturday October 24, at the Raven’s Cry Theatre.

The ten-day festival will also highlight a traditional view of cedar through a contemporary lens with the performance event SacRED, presented in the shíshálh Nation longhouse October 16 and 17. Produced by international artists Shain Jackson and Mardi, SacRED features art, music, dance, innovative storytelling, and epic special effects in the sacred cedar longhouse environment.
Additional events include a fun-filled Family Day, a Guitar Day concert, workshop series, the Scream Dream III Dance featuring emerging Coast musicians, a collaborative heritage exhibit, and Art in the Street. For more information and ticket registration, check out the website at www.secheltartsfestival.com.
THANKS! We are truly grateful for the opportunity to do our share in showcasing the real spirit and beauty of this place we all call home. the architecture of
teryl mullock 32
Over the past fifteen years, custom homes have become an increasingly important part of Teryl Mullock’s architectural practice in Gibsons. The three homes featured on these pages form part of Teryl’s ongoing exploration of ideas about our deep-rooted physical and psychological needs for shelter, moving toward the very essence of architecture. These homes are designed first and foremost in response to the specifics of the site, integrating each unique home into the landscape. Environmental responsiveness informs all of the designs, making living spaces bright and cheerful, harnessing solar energy, incorporating natural ventilation and cooling strategies, gathering rainwater for use in water features and irrigation, and considering needs for privacy and sound control.
life on the coast. in pictures.
A small house on North Road (opposite page) forms the boundary between a forest glade and a nearby road, creating a strong contrast between the inside, which belongs to the forest, and the outside, which reinforces a sense of enclosure. Rainwater is gathered into a two-level pond, and floor-to-ceiling windows invite reflected sunlight to dance on the ceiling. The generous roof canopy above the patio features a large circular skylight and is supported by a cedar post harvested from the adjacent forest (and hand peeled by the owner!). A curved canopy links the garden pavilion and shelters a small courtyard. Details are simplified and refined to give a sense of calm.
The Shoal Lookout House (this page) is situated on a dramatic rocky perch with 190-degree wrap-around views. The natural rock has a striking angular geometry with sloping flat planes that create a dynamic tension, inviting a bold response. To the east the house turns and leans out toward the view and optimizes a severely restricted space. Rainwater is gathered into a rain garden, then diverted to a recycled septic tank for irrigation. The upper floor is loft-like, open to views on three sides. With quiet details that give subtle expression to the wood structure, the house also has a strong green focus and has recently been awarded LEED gold.

In this house in Hopkins Landing, the west wall forms a solid barrier against a nearby road to protect against traffic noise. By contrast, the east side opens up to panoramic ocean views beneath a large sheltering roof that echoes the form of distant islands.

NICARAGUA by justin samson

After travelling Central America extensively in 2008 and discovering a true passion for photography, I had to revisit Nicaragua in 2015. The amount of natural beauty in the people and the landscapes captured my heart and called me back down to this hidden gem. Known as the land of volcanoes and lakes, there was no shortage of photographic opportunities. And if volcanoes and lakes aren’t enough, the 17th-century colonial architecture, vibrant-coloured homes, and great surf beaches make Nicaragua a photographer’s paradise. I really enjoyed going through the busy markets with a wide-angle lens and photographing people as I walked by, trying to capture their authentic expressions. The culture, the great food, and friendly people topped all of the other Central American countries in my eyes, and I would recommend Nicaragua to anyone looking for an amazing and affordable adventure. — Justin Samson

This section started as a space filler featuring photos of Diego, ZOOM’s yellow Labrador Retriever and his friends. It has since become our most popular section with the highest number of photo submissions. Diego passed away in August 2014, but his memory lives on in these pages, which will continue to showcase our beloved pets. Miguel (ZOOM’s new puppy) takes over editorial duties starting with this issue. Please send your favourite pet photos to diego@ zoomsunshinecoast.com.
