many thanks! As we draw close to the end of this year, we look forward with excitement to 2015, which will mark ZOOM’s sixth year on the Sunshine Coast. We would not have made it this far if not for the continued support of our advertisers and the encouragement we receive from the community and various individuals, too many to mention here. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to do our share in showcasing the real spirit and beauty of this place we all call home. Thank you!

I have a lifelong passion for all photography styles, with my main interests being in travel, landscapes, and mountain biking. I have traveled worldwide, visiting countries from Afghanistan to Zambia. I’ve lived in St Moritz, Gstaad, and Capetown, having traveled from London to Capetown overland through Africa by Land Rover. Sailed the Indian Ocean from Capetown via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean. Public transport via the overland route across central Asia and the Far East. Crossed the Himalayas via Kashmir to Ladahk and was one of the first independent travelers allowed into China. Traveling is in my blood and remains so today. I love the world we live in. My work has been used on the Web at NSMB.com, Pinkbike, ChopMTB, BikeRadar, and Red Bull, and in print media in Decline, Dirt Rag, Mountain Biking UK, and Freerider Mountain Bike magazines.

The use of cell phone photography has risen over the years. With the surge of Instagram and FaceBook and other photo-sharing sites, it has been estimated that more than 300 billion photos were taken in 2013. With the increase in camera phone quality and the ease in sharing photos, the public has embraced this modern technology. Apps available for processing the cell shots allow neophytes to enhance their images in seconds. The photos on these pages were all taken with an iPhone and processed with Camera+, my favourite photo app. Apps such as this let anyone add effects, crop, change colours, or add a frame to photos, which can then be shared via social media or emailed to family and friends, all on a cell phone without the need for a computer! People usually have their cell phones with them, presenting many opportunities for capturing shots that may otherwise be missed. | Malcolm Mclaws

life on the coast. in pictures.
I’ve discovered the power of vulnerability. I have struggled with self-esteem issues since I was a small girl. The first time I sold a painting, the experience was so frightening, I shut down and went into hiding with my artwork for almost six years. But eventually I grew tired—tired of being silent, of feeling that I wasn’t good enough and that I didn’t fit in. I grew tired of being afraid. And so I kept painting, and over time I came to realize the true power of the creative process. Painting pushes me to take risks, explore, and face my fears. It has shown me the power of vulnerability. I fail repeatedly—but I get up and keep painting until I know in my heart that a work is complete. I’ve learned to create without fear of the outcome. That kind of freedom is indescribable. I’ve made it my mission to be as expressive as I can muster the courage to be—and to inspire others to embrace their vulnerability as well. I believe that the creative process—in whatever medium you choose—is the pathway to growth. So as you create the masterpiece that is your life, don’t be afraid to let your journey create the meaning. The sixth annual Sunshine Coast Mushroom Festival saw the Pender Harbour Community Hall once again packed to capacity as people from up and down the Coast and beyond gathered to admire the vast variety of fungi that thrive in our rainforest paradise. And that wasn’t all. Savoury aromas enticed people to the gourmet cooking corner, while mushroom dyers coaxed lovely colours from steaming dyepots, children created works of art on “artists’ conks” (a special shelf fungus), and vendors sold their local wares, all to a slideshow backdrop of photos of Coast mushrooms. (See the winning images in this year’s photography contest above.) Taylor Lockwood, worldrenowned mushroom photographer, delighted those who attended his presentations in Roberts Creek and at the Botanical Society’s hall. Participants in a guided foray were treated to a cook-up of the edibles they found, giving them an opportunity to see how it’s done and to taste the delicious results. This event has earned its place in our calendars as a festival not to be missed. | Ann Harmer

under my feet What is under my feet? Layers of soil, rocks, roots, earthworms; fallen leaves, new grass, seaweed; tiles, shoes, Lego (as suggested by a new mom). What provides our foundation as we move through our days? Artists were invited to share their stories and their art—and the jury committee took on the difficult task of selecting entries. Twenty-six artists responded to the call for entry, including twelve artists from the Sunshine Coast, twelve from the Lower Mainland, and one each from Sweden and the Netherlands. FibreWorks Studio & Gallery is showcasing thirty-five works of art—2D and 3D—from these artists. The exhibit runs until November 23 at 12887 Sunshine Coast Highway (look for the yurts!) in Madeira Park.

on the harbour
Pender Harbour was packed to capacity September 19–21, 2014, for the 18th Annual Pender Harbour Jazz Festival. Attendance this year broke all previous records, and the organizers once again find themselves in the delicious predicament of finding how to top it next year. The Pender Harbour Jazz Festival started showcasing different styles of jazz seven years ago in an effort to open new ears and hearts to people who believed they “didn’t like jazz.” Some who held this belief did not realize that Swing from the 20s–40s, Latin tunes, and Afro-Cuban music ARE jazz. We now program our Festival to include all these forms, and it is working! People come to hear what they are familiar with, stay to hear different styles, and fall in love.
Sunday JAZZAPALOOZA saw a barefoot Dan Brubeck pay homage to his dad, modern jazz icon Dave Brubeck, and his Mom, Ilona Brubeck, with the music of the former and the lyrics of the latter in two stunning sets. When he finished with his Dad’s trademark piece, “Take Five,” everyone in the audience was on their feet, applauding and hooting. The word is out: The Pender Harbour Jazz Festival is a must-see. Buy your tickets for 2015 early so you won’t be disappointed. They go on sale June 1; featured headliner will be Louis Hayes and his quintet from NYC. See you there!
FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PENDER HARBOUR JAZZ FESTIVAL, PLEASE VISIT THEIR WEBSITE AT WWW.PHJAZZ.CA.

Some highlights: The Cuban Big Band at Saturday’s JAZZAPALOOZA, Wil Campa y su Orquesta, got everyone on their feet screaming and dancing as they played two blistering sets of salsa and son (soul), complete with samba lessons for the sold-out audience. Saturday night, headliner and NYC BeBop icon George Cables rendered the capacity School of Music audience breathless with his masterful ballads. You could actually hear everyone exhale at the same moment at the end of each song. And Cables’ drummer, Victor Lewis, was simply brilliant.

life on the coast. in pictures.
Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is a non-profit, registered society providing care for injured and orphaned wild birds and small mammals on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. Each year the centre receives hundreds of calls on behalf of distressed wildlife and cares for and shelters hundreds of animals, including birds, deer, raccoons, and other small mammals. Treatment may be as simple as providing proper food, water, and warmth to an orphaned fledgling
until it is old enough to be released to the wild; or as complex as arranging an operation, to implant a pin in a broken bone. It may take several weeks or even months of care to prepare an animal for a second chance in its natural habitat. All of this must be done without destroying the animal’s basic fear of humans; once on its own again, its life may depend on that natural fear.

NEW HOME CONSTRUCTION WITH A FIXED CONTRACT AGREEMENT Building a new home can be one of the most expensive and stressful experiences in your life. Being your own General Contractor becomes a stressful, second full-time job. Managing sub-trades, keeping them on time, keeping the whole process on budget, dealing with government departments and inspectors is a major undertaking. Being your own General Contractor can be very rewarding but it comes with costs and risks and a lot of stress.
We have now used Longman Developments on three separate home renovation projects. Each project was completed on time, within budget, and the end product exceeded our expectations. – S. Stinson
Over the more than 20 years Longman Developments Ltd has been building homes, they have developed a fixed contract construction process that guarantees your home will be built on-time and onbudget with almost no stress on your part. With a Fixed Contract Agreement, prior to the first shovel touching dirt you will know what is going to be built, how much it is going to cost and when it is going to be completed.
Having a house built could be a very scary process however with Longman Developments everything has been hassle free. Our house is being completed to a very high standard, it is coming in on time and on budget. – D. Boutilier

Longman Developments Ltd will work with you through the entire design process, from choosing and purchasing the lot to picking paint colours for the walls. Whether you have a set of stock plans, an architect you’re working with or just an idea and a sketch and want their in-house design team to create the plans, they will work with you to design the home you want with the budget you have.
Without any hesitation, we can truly say that you can count on every member of the Longman team to provide friendly, reliable, quality service each step of the way on your path to your new home. – G. & B. Parker
With our fixed contract pricing, building on budget is our risk, not yours!
Through the design phase they will work with you to decide on your home’s layout, its style, the type and colour of the siding and roofing, the types and colours of the flooring, the wall, ceiling and trim paint colours, the layout and style of the kitchen and bathroom cabinets, the material and colour of the countertops, the bathroom tub and shower tile, the fireplace type, size and locations, the heating and hot-water systems used, etc. The goal of the design phase is to develop a construction plan for the home you want at the price you can afford. Once the design and layout of your home has been decided (choices such as paint colours can wait), Longman Developments Ltd will put together a Fixed Contract Agreement which will detail what will be built, when it will be completed and how much it will cost. Once you’ve signed the agreement, they will get to work and you can relax until it’s time to call the moving company to move your furniture and effects into your brand new home, a home that is covered by a 2-5-10 National Home Warranty governed by the Homeowners Protection Office.
Building a home might be stressful but one of the best ways to reduce the impact on your nerves is to deal with people you can trust; people that deliver a quality product on time and on budget. The Longman Developments team did just that and it is our pleasure to recommend their services to anyone looking to purchase a quality product or to have your own home built to spec. – Gerry and Betsy
From the initial drawing up of the plans to the final completion of our home Longman Developments and their trades were very professional and did an incredible job both on the interior and exterior of our home. – C. Jones FIXED CONTRACT PRICES
Longman Developments Ltd is also willing to work with you to arrange vendor financing or other creative ways to get you into the brand new home that you want.
