WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE

The bobcat in the backyard, the deer in the orchard, the owl in the tree. Many of us have tried to snap photos of the wild creatures that share our piece of the world. Sure, we use the images to impress our city friends, but also we’re hoping to capture some of that wildness, to celebrate it, and maybe feel a little bit of a relationship with it. Pam Mullins understands this yearning. Her wildlife photographs communicate reverence along with a strong sense of connection. You’ll see herons looking exultant in one shot, pensive in another. A grouse seems to be on its toes, poised for flight and nervous. (It’s impossible not to anthropomorphize.) Vulnerable hatchlings, eyes still closed, cluster around a blue egg, their unhatched sibling. Stark photos show bears, wolves, and coyotes staring into the camera with mesmerizing otherworldliness.

Mullins is self-taught and has lived in some very remote parts of our province. This, perhaps, has given her such sympathy for her wild subjects. The Sunshine Coast has been her home for two years now and, as remote as it is in places here, she’s had to search a little harder than before to get truly wild animal shots. “Bears are one of my favorite critters to photograph and spend time with,” Mullins says. “Here they seem to be more nocturnal than I’m used to.” And for bird photos? “The Sechelt marsh is a wonderful place for bird photos. Besides the local mallard, pigeon, and heron population, spring and fall bring migratory visitors to the marsh. Spring brings a parade of ducklings and goslings. If you sit quietly and wait something, fun always happens there.” TO SEE MORE OF PAM’S PHOTOGRAPHY OR TO PURCHASE ARCHIVAL PRINTS, PLEASE VISIT WWW.PAMSWILDIMAGES.COM OR FACEBOOK.COM/PAMSWILDIMAGES.

WORDS | KATHERINE JOHNSTON

In 1966, a few committed individuals, including current residents Harry Almond and Ken Sneddon, formed the Sunshine Coast Arts Council (predating the BC Arts Council) to provide opportunities for the citizens, artists, and artisans of the Coast to enjoy and participate in local cultural activities. In 1979, after the Council had rented various facilities in Sechelt and Gibsons for more than ten years, a unique log structure was built at the corner of Trail and Medusa. The building was designed by local craftsman Clarke Steabner, the logs were donated, and the lumber milled at the Crowston family mill. The gallery at the Arts Centre was later named after Doris Crowston, a supporter and generous donor from the Arts Council’s inception. Subsequently, with the fundraising expertise of long-time resident Maurice Egan, 1996 extensions to the building provided music and art studios, complementing the earlier extensions that included the kitchen and offices. The structure thus became the physical hub for the many programs and activities created and managed by the Council.

Over the years the Council has hosted musicians, artists, performers, and authors, including such well-known figures as Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, John Ralsten Saul, Jane Coop, Robert Silverman, David Hockney, Bill Reid, and Don Jarvis. Longtime annual Arts Council events have become seasonal highlights. The Hackett Park Arts and Crafts Fair opened with fifteen booths in 1987. Held in August, the fair now attracts more than sixty province-wide artisans and welcomes 4,000–6,000 visitors. Begun in the early ‘80s, the Deck the Halls Christmas Craft Fair, known by different names and held in various locations over the years, now takes place in the Arts Centre each November. In its ongoing role of creating and staging cultural activities, the SCAC presents not only regular exhibitions of emerging and professional artists of all kinds, but also music concerts, film series, workshops, and literary series. For Coast youth, programs include the Young People’s Own show for both elementary and secondary school students, the Street Banner Project, Young Artists’ Awards, and a summer children’s art workshop. The Council honours local talent through three annual awards: the Anne and Philip Klein Visual Arts Award recognizes an artist who discovers an artistic passion later in life; the Louise Baril Music Award supports ongoing musical education; and the Gillian Lowndes award acknowledges long-standing achievement in any art discipline. A supporter of other major cultural activities on the Coast, the SCAC acts as an important resource for several organizations that depend on its charitable status to apply for grants. These groups include the Sechelt Arts Festival, Gibsons Jazz Festival, Coasting Along Theatre Society, Deer Crossing the Art Farm, Sunshine Coast Spinners and Weavers Guild, and the Arts Building in Gibsons. Another resource is the Arts Council building itself, which has become a popular rental facility for groups of all sizes holding regular weekly or monthly meetings. The general public has also come to appreciate the venue for personal events such as birthdays, weddings, and memorials. If you’re not already familiar with the Sunshine Coast Arts Council, drop in to the Arts Centre and check out what’s going on. THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF SEASHORE AND FOREST INSPIRES CHRIS’S WORK. HIS ARTISTIC PROCESS IS MULTI-LAYERED, CREATING DIMENSIONAL COLOURS AND PATTERNS THAT DEFINE THE AESTHETIC OF MOLTEN SPIRIT GLASS.

14

Molten Spirit Glass Studio is nestled in the woods of Roberts Creek, just off Highway 101. Chris has been working with glass for more than eighteen years. He received training while making glass heart paperweights for almost two years in a production factory in Vancouver. From there he studied at the renowned Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State and at Red Deer College in Alberta. He then went on to work for several glass artists in the Lower Mainland. Following the birth of their first son in 2003, Chris and wife Louise moved to Roberts Creek. Over the next two years, Chris assembled his studio and in 2005, Molten Spirit Glass was opened. “We had been coming to the Coast for a couple of years, kayaking and doing camping trips at Smuggler Cove and in Sechelt Inlet,” says Chris. “We were attracted by the semi-rural lifestyle. We wanted our kids to chase chickens, not cars.”

Molten Spirit Glass can be found in Fresh from the Coast, the Landing Gallery, the Flying Anvil, and Eco Freako Gallery on the Coast, as well as in the home studio showroom in Roberts Creek. They are also represented by Tug Guhm Gallery in Lund and Sterling Gallery on Granville Island. Regular shows include Hackett Park Arts and Crafts Fair, Roberts Creek Christmas Craft Fair, and participation in the Sunshine Coast Arts Crawl. Chris and Louise host an annual Glass Pumpkin Patch, which coincides with the Arts Crawl. This is a popular stop where visitors can watch Chris blow glass outside under the trees in an improvised open-air studio environment. Visitors also have the opportunity to help create their own pumpkins, and this often continues the following week for overflow demand. Bookings can be made via their Facebook page or email. MOLTEN SPIRIT GLASS STUDIO IS LOCATED AT 885 BYNG RD, ROBERTS CREEK. “Too much!” It’s an expression her friends will recognize as classic Penny. Accompanied by an open, childlike grin of delight, the expression takes us to the heart of her credo, which was an almost uncanny nose for authenticity, instinctively shunning anything flashy or false. This guided her to make choices that weren’t always consistent with “success” but that instead reflected integrity and a wariness of the burdens of fame. After early, resounding success, she took time away from the music scene to rebuild her mental health and to raise her beloved son, Jason. When she returned to the stage in the late ‘80s, she brought even more warmth and wisdom to her music. In the extraordinarily diverse genre of folk music, Lang emerged as an artist who exemplified the one undisputed common feature: honesty. Penny received long overdue official recognition at the 2006 Canadian Folk Music Awards, where she brought home awards for Best Contemporary Album and Best Solo Artist for her album Stone+Sand+Sea+Sky (Borealis Records).

PENNY LANG 1942-2016

At home in Madeira Park, Penny will be remembered for her engaging “soup and song nights” held in the basement of the tiny Anglican Church. Everyone was welcomed, and the fearful were particularly encouraged to perform. She understood that connection is everything. It was typical of her unerring ability, one coveted by artists of all kinds, to find that sweet spot where communication and truth overlap.

Among all the talent and quiet fame tucked away in our woods, Penny Lang stood apart. The folk singer, whose career spanned five decades and produced six albums, was a household name in the burgeoning café and folk scene of her hometown Montreal in the late ‘60s. During her long career, she toured internationally and shared the stage with many acclaimed artists. In Madeira Park, where Penny made her home with longtime partner Nancy Howell, Penny was known for being absolutely unassuming, friendly, and engaging.

“With your generous gifts of music, art, laughter and friendship . . . the lives of those whom you have touched have been changed for the better . . . thank you, Penny!” —Edmund Arceo PHOTOS FROM NANCY HOWELL’S COLLECTION (THANKS TO ROSE KIRCHNER) | MAIN PHOTO BY CLAUDINE SAUVÉ

DANCERS OF DAMELAHAMID

The October Sechelt Arts Festival celebrates visual art, performance art, engagement art, and local heritage during a ten-day program with water as an underlying theme. Highlights include Waterworks, a curated art exhibition at the Seaside Centre, which examines the “have and have not” story of water through the eyes of three-dimensional Coast artists, including a striking 20-foot waterfall created by a collaboration of four fibre artists; Dancers of Damelahamid, the Vancouverbased aboriginal dance company with choreographer and artistic director Margaret Greniew, presents Flicker, a story inspired by their Northwest Coast Gitxsan heritage, through dramatic dance, captivating narrative, intricately carved masks, elaborate regalia, and striking special multi-media effects; Kinnie Starr, local resident and aboriginal hip-hop poet/singer/songwriter heats up the Raven’s Cry stage with her provocative spoken word, melodic music, and dramatic imagery by artist Braken Hanuse Corlett; and Vocal Intent, a local a capella group, presents a special concert opening weekend of water-inspired music, as will local composer/pianist Nir Blu. A special appearance by Matt Diamond and the fearless Purple Pirate will entertain all on Family Day.

KINNIE STARR

Free workshops, a heritage exhibit, and evening music performances complete the water-themed programming from Thursday, October 13, to Sunday, October 23, at various Sechelt venues. For more information, please visit secheltartsfestival.com.

There’s everything to love about autumn! We get to know our homes again, we light fires, our days become a little more balanced. We’ve finished gorging ourselves on sun and sea and we don’t have to wait up to view the stars. Many of us are drawn this time of year to the forests, where the energy change is palpable. Autumn rains and colder nights bring an eruption from our forest floors in the form of fabulous fungi, delicious, medicinal, useful, and beautiful in more ways than we can imagine. For local wild crafters this brings a season of delight, certainly something to celebrate. And celebrate we shall, with three not-to-miss events in October!

October 14–16: 8th Annual Mushroom Festival

We can look forward to presentations, expertly guided group forays, and identification/display tables, and maybe even sampling! Some pre-registration is required. For more information: scshroom.org. Inquiries: scshroom@gmail.com. October 17–22: 17th International Fungi & Fibre Symposium

Hands up, who has ruined a garment by carrying a few interesting fungi home in the pockets or cradled in the belly of a shirt? Who has done it more than a few times? It turns out there is a lot to learn about this phenomenon. Mushroom dyers from twelve countries around the world will gather for a week of sharing wisdom related to the craft of obtaining colour from mushrooms. Registrants will attend West Coast mushroomrelated workshops and will go out into our local rainforests on mushroom forays. Socializing, dining, and some wine-pairing are on the menu for this well-organized event. All the information you need is at www.fungiandfibre2016.org. Most of the event is open to registrants only, but the public is invited to attend an exhibit of mushroom-dyed pieces brought by those attending the Symposium. Wednesday through Friday, October 19–21, 3:00–5:30 pm, Harbour Room at the Painted Boat Resort, Madeira Park. October 21: Book Launch at the Symposium - Ann Paulsen Harmer’s Magic in the Dyepot

In this gorgeous book, Ann Harmer shares her extensive knowledge of Sunshine Coast fungi and the ancient art of creating useful dyes from local mushrooms. Harmer joins the ranks of her mentor, Miriam Rice, who wrote what has been called “the mushroom-dyer’s bible” (Mushrooms for Dyes, Paper, Pigments and MycoStix, International Mushroom Dye Institute, 2012) by creating this engaging and lovely book that seeks to inform and encourage wild crafters and those experimenting with dyeing. As with all domestic arts, a certain fearlessness is often the best approach.

W Ogallery W Proudly representing sixteen local artists and twenty-four artisans, WOW! is a focal point for art in Upper Gibsons. With almost 1,800 square feet of open space, the work of some of the Sunshine Coast’s most respected and bold painters mingles with photography, sculpture, pottery, blown glass, wood carvings, felt work, and stunning jewelry handcrafted by six local smiths. It is also a platform for the creative efforts of local authors, and its book section is growing daily. A modest but lovingly handpicked inventory of musical instruments and supplies makes WOW! a haven for musicians on the Coast. Such artistic beauty and creative expressions are made available to the public in a tastefully appointed venue that is becoming a popular meeting point in Gibsons—a dynamic place where everyone is always welcome to drop in and enjoy an organic coffee or exotic tea in our artists’ lounge . . . a perfect setting to appreciate and support local talent.

WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE

SUNSHINE COAST We’ve all felt the buzz, the attention, the light that’s recently shone on our part of the world. It’s coming from around the planet, across the country, and from the city just a short hop away. Our gorgeous natural harbours, sparkling lakes, pristine trails, wildlife, and untrammeled lifestyles have long made our population smug. Whether we are rural and remote or cozily settled into attractive villages, we can’t believe our good fortune. Lots of us make a point of catching the sunset each day to send up a thank-you to the universe for all we have. It’s what we do. We pay attention to the natural world, particularly celestial events, to solstices and equinoxes, and we make a point of viewing as many sunsets as we can. Ask anyone about the best sunset-viewing spots. You’ll probably get several answers, depending on the time of year. Gibsons is all about views. There are so many locations to watch as the evening sun turns the North Shore mountains pink. Then linger over dinner on a patio, near a window, or on a beach blanket, and scan the mountains for the glow where the moon will rise.

life on the coast. in pictures. In Roberts Creek, the jetty is where people turn up quietly every clear day of the year, just in time to watch the wide view of sea and distant islands change at sunset. Here it’s easy to remember that as the sun goes down, night is rising. While pinks, golds, and oranges blaze on the right, make sure to glance the other way and watch the subtle purples and greys as they take over the sky. Sechelt makes enjoying sunsets particularly comfortable. Stroll the promenade. Watch herons, still as statues, waiting in the shallows for their evening meal. The rocks at the end of Snickett Park are easy to access, the perfect place to watch the sky change and birds fly to their nighttime nooks. With the waves thumping right below, you’ll feel you are someplace wild and remote, right in the heart of town. A sunset cruise or a quiet paddle is a great way to toast the day’s end in Pender Harbour. Or if you’re lucky, on a friend’s perfectly placed deck. And Powell River is one big sunset, its residents spoiled for choice when it comes to end-of-day viewing. Keep driving right to the edge, and Lund sunsets will give you just that impression, of being on the brink of our immense Pacific Northwest wilderness. Sunsets remind us. Of how quickly time is passing and how quickly glory can turn drab. Anyone who’s tried to catch the best moment with a camera knows this. On the best evenings a sunset will have a slip of new moon and perhaps a star (which is really a planet) as companions. This is when sunsets really remind us that we’re all circling, the way children love to be whirled, with our fellow planets around the raging generosity of the sun.

WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE

For Ingeborg Hardman, photographing architecturally designed custom homes is about receptivity. She gives herself the time and the space to really feel the designer’s intent and to let herself be led to the subtleties, nuances, and associations brought up by each home. This holistic approach has been encouraged by Ansel Adams: “You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.” Ingeborg brings into play her technique, utilizing light, landscape, and attention to detail to bring out wonderful and surprising features. These can be immensely diverse: a grassy lawn, rustic and irregular tiles, an entranceway designed to feature fine art, a sweeping seascape, or a truly unique bathroom. Her senses direct her differently each time. She agrees with Arthur Erickson that “. . . inspiration in science may have to do with ideas, but not in art. In art it is in the senses that are instinctively responsive to the medium of expression.”

Though most of her work tends to be on the lower Sunshine Coast, from Sechelt to Langdale, it’s been an exciting and active year all over. “The builders are very busy,” Hardman says, and have said that they don’t see this trend slowing. (This has been) . . . a very good trend for me. The top builders recognize that to get to the next level, they need to have professional photos for their portfolio.”
