So many of our most vivid memories come with landscapes. And landscapes need a touch of the human to really bring out the drama and the startling proportions. This understanding, of humans’ affinity for powerful places, is illustrated in Sherry Nelsen’s photographs. If her models and clients are willing, she is always game to make extra efforts to get to spectacular sites. And we have quite a few of them close to home. “It’s part of the fun, part of the journey and reward, to create something that is really jaw-dropping.” Her eye for the perfect backdrop is just as sure whether at seaside, in the snowy mountains, or in cowboy country, giving her portfolio a wonderful and rare “surf and turf” flare. Nelsen loves to study the work of other photographers and travels to workshops to keep current and inspired. Her website at freshairphotography.ca shows her consistent approach to diverse subject matter. Visit her Wedding, Lifestyles, Passion, and Business galleries, which contain many examples of her instinct for finding and highlighting the heart of each scene and subject. “I love to scout out locations that will provide a dramatic backdrop for my newlyweds. A photo should be a piece of art! I want it to be so spectacular that the couple can look at that moment, that perfect moment, and smile for the rest of their lives and never tire of looking at it.” new year 2017

People’s passions are her specialty. An animal lover, Nelsen enjoys the challenges and possibilities of including animals in her work. “The bond with people and their animals is sometimes more fierce than between two humans. I like to show a little of that as well in my work.” Animals enhance many of Nelsen’s landscape photos, and she particularly loves photographing horses. For her they function as a gateway into a scene. The presence of the horse “. . . adds to the story of the photo. It helps give perspective in size for one thing, and it sometimes makes the viewer dream about being in that gorgeous spot themselves!”

Weddings are so often a couple’s best chance to shout out the unique style that will mark their lives together, although couples often struggle to articulate this style for themselves. Nelsen is adept at using their choice of location, degree of formality, their interactions with the landscape, the wedding party, and each other to tell their stories. And so you’ll see a kiss made all the more intimate by a vast and sweeping sky overhead. Solemn vows are much more solemn amidst breaking waves and towering rocks. Hands held are more poignant in a limitless landscape.

Varney says, “Lately, I have been seeing more and more requests for commissions for peoples’ homes and workplaces. This is very good news. I usually work on these pieces in between the art fairs I do and try to ship as soon as I can. If I can stay home and create an original for someone, rather than drive across the continent for an art fair, it’s much desired to do so.” Oil pastel on black background has been his favourite medium for many years. Judicious use of hand-cut gold leaf makes these works gleam and draws viewers closer, like fish to lures. He almost never looks at a photograph or sketches directly from life, but holds the images in his mind’s eye. He relies on memory as a way of curating impressions in the same way that some writers refuse to take notes, trusting that what stands out most in memory will be the elements most essential to the creation.

Brett Varney gives people what they want. His vivid oil pastels and giclee prints are a delight. While a lot of contemporary art is moving in the direction of digital, hybrid, appropriated materials, some artists choose to work in a traditional manner that honours craft, beauty, and accessibility. Brett Varney is such an artist. His colourful pastels and giclees evoke associations with post-Impressionists like Van Gogh. The artist himself references Wassily Kandinsky, the early twentieth-century Russian artist and pioneer of abstraction, who was much concerned with connecting to viewers on a spiritual level and sought to embody the possibilities of music in his creations. While Varney’s work is not obviously intellectual, his use of colour does bring to mind the power of music. This is no hobby for Varney. Although he and his partner moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2007, he has been a full-time artist since the 90s and supports himself selling his work. Many of his happy customers find him at juried art festivals in the States, where he has often won Best in Show awards. He is represented by several galleries and has a US-based agent. Online sales add up too, and his website has been an important means of keeping in touch with customers who often return for more or to commission something.

BARGAIN

BARN

40 years

Sheets and shot glasses, boots and board games, winter clothes and workout tapes . . . It’s a great time to highlight the work of Bargain Barn! What they do is what January and February are all about. After the main winter festivities, we try to be more thrifty, we work to declutter. We look to buy things second-hand. And there’s a particular satisfaction when we take boxes of gently used things, no longer so useful to us, and find them new homes. And we’re extra thankful for our health resources, which are so heavily leaned upon at this time of year. So take a bow, Bargain Barn! It has been doing essential work in downtown Madeira Park for forty years. Proceeds from the sale of donations to this eclectic thrift store have topped $900,000 since 1977, and all profits go toward supporting health care in Pender Harbour. A volunteer appreciation event was held at the Pender Harbour School of Music in late November, hosted by the executive of the Pender Harbour & District Health Centre Auxiliary Society. Sixty people attended and enjoyed appetizers (catered by Doug Davis), anecdotes, and laughs. Founders Doreen Lee and Muriel Cameron were given special recognition, and volunteers past and present were feted. On a chilly Thursday afternoon Bargain Barn’s supremely organized jumble is bustling. There’s a mom with a stroller, browsing baby clothes, a svelte senior trying on some stylish boots, someone arranging knick knacks, and a couple of us already with small stacks of 75¢ books assembled for checkout. There’s lots of humour and banter from behind the till. The many regulars know which days the newest items hit the shelves, and there’s a powerful good feeling of doing the right thing: reusing, donating, avoiding waste and extravagance. Contributing to making things better.

THE BARGAIN BARN THRIFT STORE IS LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN MADEIRA PARK. FOR STORE HOURS, PLEASE VISIT WWW.PENDERHARBOURHEALTH.COM AND FOLLOW THE LINK TO HEALTH CENTRE AUXILIARY.

MAMA’S KITCHEN I asked two people, “You know Mama’s Kitchen? In Madeira Park?”

... making people happy

I’d barely finished my utterance before they took the query and ran: “The best, THE best sushi on the Coast!” said one. “I drive up there from Sandy Hook when I feel like really authentic Japanese food. Awesome!” said the other. Mama’s is beloved in Pender Harbour for fine ingredients and home-style Japanese food. Their monthly specials, aimed at offering variety to their many regular customers, their take-out or eat-in options, party trays, user-friendly hours, and catering fill a very hungry niche in the Harbour area. Mama’s is a fine example of the sort of small business that really nourishes (literally in this case) and supports the community. It’s what everyone craves.

exploring the

SUNSHINE COAST Whatever your conveyance (on foot, mountain bike, mobility scooter, kayak, horseback, cross-country ski, or other). Whatever the weather. Whatever your time frame. The Sunshine Coast has a trail, park, or recreation area that will make your fresh air and nature time memorable. There are walks close to towns and villages, where you can enjoy a well-deserved dinner and refreshment afterward. Or you can set out for back country, do you own provisioning, and enjoy solitude, self-sufficiency, and the splendor of the natural world around you. If the weather is warm, a lake or a seaside dip is the ultimate reward, and here the only difficulty is choosing which it will be.

Soames Hill is a short, steep hike that will quickly have you gazing across island-dotted Howe Sound to the snowy North Shore Mountains, and looking down on the gorgeous natural harbour that makes Gibsons such an enviable address. The woods surrounding the trail are dark and deep, and often you’ll hear owls calling, even in daytime.

life on the coast. in pictures.

Cliff Gilker Park, just beside the golf course in Roberts Creek, has a variety of well-marked all-season trails that bring you right up to waterfalls and across sparkling creeks. Indeed, upper Roberts Creek is a mecca for trail users on bike, horseback, and on foot. When the weather is warm, your animal companions will appreciate these gentle-to-moderate slopes that are veined with clean creeks and shaded by tall forests. Sechelt Heritage Forest and Hidden Grove have 15.5 km of volunteer-maintained trails close to town. These include minimal-challenge and accessibility trails plus off-leash trails for well-behaved dogs. It’s a magical place with quiet groves of big trees. Watch for evidence of the traditional practice of bark-stripping on the large cedar trees, then be sure to visit the Tems Swiya Museum in Sechelt to see examples of the arts of basketry and weaving. Continue up the Coast and you’ll find Smuggler Cove Marine Park, which can be accessed by land or water. As well as providing all-weather anchorage, bays, cliffs, and beaches, the 457-acre park has a boardwalk trail through wetlands and great opportunities for bird and wildlife viewing—even a beaver dam. For wonderful views of the Pender Harbour area, a hike up Mt. Daniel is your best bet. It’s less than 5 km round trip, but the trail is quite steep, so leave yourself some time to get there, and time to take in the sweeping views. If a flatter walk is more to your taste, Skookumchuck Narrows is the perfect destination. This provincial park was established in 1957, and the 4-km hike has long been popular with visitors to the Coast. Here you can watch billions of gallons of water move through the narrow pass, with currents that can exceed 30 knots! Time your hike to coincide with the tide change, and you can expect whirlpools and white water. Leaving the best for last, grab some adventurous friends and try the Sunshine Coast Trail, the 180-km back-country experience that everyone is talking about! Pack your gear and enjoy the longest hut-to-hut hiking in Canada, with more than a dozen newly constructed stopover huts from Sara Point in Desolation Sound to Saltery Bay just south of Powell River. This trail traverses shoreline, lakes, old-growth forests, and mountaintop and is free, making it the best outdoor adventure value around.

life on the coast. in pictures.

All that is alluring about the West Coast is on offer at Painted Boat Spa and Resort near the coastal community of Madeira Park. Each luxurious villa has a full granite kitchen, soaker tub, stone fireplace, patio with BBQ, and bay views to sigh over. The casual and fine dining is fine indeed, with fresh local specialties, intriguing cocktails, and a wine list that will inform and delight the connoisseur. Activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, guided hikes, and studio tours with renowned West Coast artists are a fabulous way to spend an afternoon. Boat rentals, fishing charters,

or a sunset harbour tour can be arranged. The stunning location, amidst coastal forest and bordering the calm waters of the bay and marina, makes it the perfect destination for adventure or serenity. The Painted Boat is a short ferry trip and one-hour drive from Vancouver, a 20-minute floatplane ride, or you can boat in and tie up safely at the expanded marina. Weddings, corporate groups, and those seeking weekend getaways will find inspiration and just the right mix of luxury and fresh air to make events successful and memorable.
