a life fulfilled On the first day of August, we said goodbye to our dearest boy, Diego. It was his time to go and it broke our hearts. A Labrador Retriever’s life expectancy ranges from ten to twelve years, so when Diego turned twelve in February this year, we were grateful he had made it that far. In human terms, his was a short life—twelve years, five months, and three days. But for Diego, it was a long life lived to the fullest. He gave everything he had until the last few days, when his eyes seemed to say, “I have nothing left to give.” He was a family member, and we were a closely knit pack. We communicated with each other well—with our words, vocal intonations, and hand signals, and his body language, sighs, whines, and grunts (he was quite feisty at times and increasingly “talked” back as he got older). We anticipated his next moves even before he thought about them. He knew our daily routine so well. Like clockwork, he would get up, stretch, and start making noises at 5 pm. It was his dinner time!

We miss Diego terribly. We find ourselves expecting to see him ambling out of the room with a sleepy face, or lying on the deck sunning himself, or standing outside the back door waiting to be let in, or walking up our driveway after scouting our neighbour’s yard for a worn-out soccer ball to steal—just to quickly realize that he is gone. He won’t be coming back. Then the tears come and the painful, heavy feeling of loss creeps in. Diego taught us a lot more than we were able to teach him. He loved each summer day and took every opportunity to dive fearlessly into the water. He welcomed snowfall like a visiting old friend. In his younger days, he showed how happy he was by jumping high, over and over, bouncing like he was on a trampoline. He made friends easily but stood up to bullies. He loved trails, found joy in discovering rivers and ponds, sniffed every blade of grass, and brought home little treasures from the forest that he kept close in his bed. He never said no to a new adventure. Our favourite look on his face was when it was time to go home after a swim. He would refuse to get out of the water and would look at us in disbelief, as if saying, “What? You want to leave now? This is the best spot on earth!”

Diego lived his life to the fullest, and in doing so made our time with him most rewarding. He was with us for only a brief period of our lives, but what a great privilege it was to have been there for all of his. Edmund Arceo edmund@zoomsunshinecoast.com

Don Klan’s photographic life began when he wanted to help his wife, Jean, whose art teacher told her she should work from photos. Don’s eye for the best angles was superb, but the dials and buttons on a camera, even a point-and-shoot, intimidated him. In a step of courage he decided to get a Canon Rebel and learn how to use it. His initial learning curve was almost straight up as he figured out how to switch from automatic to manual through a process of trial and error out in the field. Don enjoys frequent outdoor photographic outings; Jean, however, made it abundantly clear that she was in no mood to get up every day at 4 a.m. to collect the sunrises Don found so delightful. Four years and more than 40,000 images later, Don continues to learn the technical components of photography, but his real joy is in the growth of his God-given ability to see deeply the composition and colour in the world that has always filled his soul with celebration. Getting up for every sunrise, then hitting the forest trails all day to find more perfect shots has its price. Sometimes Don gets a little grumpy when he misses a sensational sunset because he is too tired. He echoes Monet when he says, “Colour is my daylong obsession, joy, and torment.”

This year marked the 5th Annual Synchronicity Arts Festival held at Shirley Macey Park in Gibsons, BC. More than 60 musicians took part in the festivities: new MainStage Series, Rainforest Circus, new Workshop Series, thoughtprovoking installations, the Community Village, local food, Human Jukebox, a “Refreshment” Garden featuring local libations, and more. The darling of the festival, the Art Farm’s 2014 Rainforest Circus, returned with a visit to the Underworld. A combination of aerialists, musicians, sculptors, puppeteers, clowns, poets, acrobats, and dancers awed festival-goers once again. The Pender Harbour Jazz Festival was started in 1996 by a group of musicians and board members of the Pender Harbour Music Society. Their mandate is: to lengthen the tourist season to help local businesses; to feature all styles of jazz from varied countries and cultures; to attract a new audience to the music and to enlarge the vision of existing jazz fans; to showcase world-class musicians and emerging stars from across Canada, BC, and the world, as well as local Sunshine Coast groups; and to provide a free clinic with a world-class musician for music students from Sunshine Coast high schools.

Eighteen years later, the festival is still going strong and its audience continues to grow. People who believed they didn’t like jazz are exposed to many different styles each year, from Afro-Cuban to gypsy to swing, and are finding music they like very much, indeed. The festival has become known internationally as a great party to play in, and submissions come from great musicians around the globe each year.

LAFAYETTE STRING QUARTET WITH ALEXANDER TSELYAKOV
More than a decade ago, a group of music enthusiasts dreamed of a summer chamber music festival in their community, the pretty village of Madeira Park on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast. They had the venue—a restored government Forestry building housing the Pender Harbour School of Music, surrounded by tall firs, its generous windows overlooking the lively harbour. They had a prospective artistic director: distinguished pianist Alexander Tselyakov had performed in Madeira Park not long before and thought it was a perfect location for a musical weekend. And they believed that audiences would be drawn to beautiful music performed in an intimate waterfront setting. So in August of 2005, the Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival was born. How quickly the years have flown! The Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival celebrated its tenth anniversary on the weekend of August 14–17, 2014. A stellar group of musicians performed at five ticketed concerts over four days, and at the popular (and free) Chamber Music Doesn’t Bite concert. Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy’s piano quintet, In A World of Motion and Distance, commissioned by the festival for this year’s tenth anniversary, received its world premiere at the opening concert, performed by the Lafayette String Quartet and Alexander Tselyakov. Completing this year’s roster were violinist Gary Levinson, cellist Suren Bagratuni, flautist Eugenia Zukerman, saxophonist Julia Nolan, and pianist Baya Kakouberi. The festival is held around the third weekend in August of each year. The generosity of an active cohort of Friends of the Festival and a group of volunteers makes the whole thing possible. ed cleave
Abandoned cars, trains, trucks, and farm or sawmill equipment serve as artist Ed Cleave’s inspiration for some of his watercolour paintings. He photographs his subjects and then creates his art. His main medium is watercolour, but he also uses India ink, draws cartoons, carves soapstone, and has published a book of poetry. He starts every piece with the intention of creating a masterpiece. He feels he has not achieved it yet, so he continues to try. Ed was born in Port Alberni but lived most of his life on the Lower Mainland. He worked in sawmills and machine shops as a welder. At the age of 59 he retired and started down the elusive path of the artist. He had no formal art training, so he says that it was a challenging and bumpy road.

WATERMARK at SECHELT O
ne of the only true beachfront developments in Coastal B.C. in the heart of a vibrant village, Watermark is just steps away from all of the amenities of Sechelt and is now complete and ready for you to move in. The two six story buildings combine for a total of 104 luxury homes and 6,500 sq. ft. of commercial space including a café bistro which is soon to open.
We wanted to downsize and simplify our life, and give ourselves more opportunities to get outside and enjoy. It’s a brand-new day every morning when I step out on my patio and soak in the ocean air...”
“When I decided to sell my condo in Vancouver and move elsewhere, the requirements for my next home were simple: two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a beach in front of me and coffee shops behind me.” and Leianne Emery found it all at Watermark at Sechelt “Location is everything. The Sunshine Coast is the perfect mix of natural beauty, incredible outdoor activities and commercial business. The community of Sechelt has everything one would need—young and old—and is ripe with opportunities. The Watermark at Sechelt is my new home and I couldn’t be happier.”
- DEB PEPPER, Watermark resident
“We wanted to downsize and simplify our life, and give ourselves more opportunities to get outside and enjoy. It’s a brand-new day every morning when I step out on my patio and soak in the ocean air,” says Deb Pepper, who is enjoying life with husband Ron and their playful Cavalier spaniel. “Our new home is worry-free, low-maintenance, and is in a great location for regular activity.” Deb and Ron relocated from Gibsons.
photos by Linda Sabiston
Phase I homeowners have been living in the development for almost one year and we asked a few of them what they think about their new homes and surroundings: “We love sitting and looking out at the ocean, and all the activity happening off shore,” says Bruce Maxwell, who together with wife Lis, are enjoying their southern view from a 490 sq. ft. patio. They made the right move from Vancouver to Sechelt last year “I wanted a large, south-facing condo with an ocean view, and our new home is everything we hoped for.”

yoga on water WORDS | CAITLIN HICKS
PHOTOGRAPHY | VERN BAHTI MINARD
Yoga on a stand up paddle board? In Tuwanek? I had to try it. Sunshine, gorgeous scenery, balance, and breathing. I’m an on-again/off-again yogi wanabee. Child’s Pose, Downward Dog, and Tree are my favorite poses, and I’m flexible, so it mostly comes easily, but I don’t relax enough. Just breathe enough. Just be. My first surprise: I was nervous. It looks so easy! We wore what everyone used to call “life jackets” and tied our boards to our feet at first. But the water was warm, the sun still hot, the sky my favourite bright blue, the water luscious, and Marnie told us we had to jump in and get wet. It was the right thing to dare us to do; after that we all relaxed. I discovered that I love SUP. Tuwanek is a sweet destination. And the swaying of the board over the moving water requires balance and mindfulness.
STAND UP PADDLE BOARD (SUP) YOGA IS AVAILABLE AT YOGA BY THE SEA (YOGABYTHESEA.CA). SUP BOARDS BY PEDALS & PADDLES (PEDALSPADDLES.CA). SEE MORE SUP YOGA PHOTOS AT VERNBAHTIMINARD.COM. diego’s den
A couple of years ago, I wondered if I would be able to continue working on this section when Diego, our Yellow Labrador retriever for whom this section is named after, said goodbye. Now that Diego is gone, I realize that his passing should not end what has become a very popular section, one that has brought smiles to many readers. Encouraging words from friends and supporters have also convinced me to keep it going. Diego’s Den will always bear his name, and his photos will still appear here. But as ZOOM readers know, this section is not just about our dear boy. This is where we show our pride, love, and appreciation for all our pets. Whether they are in the prime of their lives or have passed on, our loyal companions—our friends—will have a space here in ZOOM. I remember how it started: as “space filler” in our December 2009 premiere issue. I had a half page that I needed to fill, so I gathered a few photos of our neighbours’ and friends’ dogs. Diego was seven years old at that time. I then invited other pet owners to send their pets’ photos. I received an overwhelming response, and submissions poured in. I get the most emails from Sunshine Coasters who would love to see their animal friends in this section. Please continue to send your favourite pet photos. Diego’s Den welcomes all.
