Photographer Justin Samson and local artist Sara Faye Agnew have been working on a project they’re calling Painting with Light, using a photographic technique that captures the movement of light during long exposures. There are many ways to paint with light, several of which are displayed here. In this series of photographs, glow sticks, sparklers, flashlights, and spinning steel wool were used to create light effects. Each photo was taken on a tripod with slow shutter speeds ranging from 10 to 30 seconds. The ISO is set as low as possible for maximum quality, using a medium aperture, f/6.3-f/13, to maintain a sharp focus throughout the image and to control the light exposure. The artists wanted to capture well-known spots around the Sunshine Coast and show them in a different way. The project started with the glow-stick photo on top of Soames Hill under a super moon and grew from there. Some of the other locations include Davis Bay pier and beach, the totem poles at the Sechelt Indian Band, Gospel Rock, Armours Beach, and the Gibsons skateboard park.

sa boothroyd “I like to begin a painting without knowing what it is, then figure it out,” says Sa Boothroyd. “Things don’t always make sense.” Flying dogs, birds with postage stamps for feet, pots of tea, cats steering houses on bicycle wheels: some of the “senseless” things you’ll find frequenting her paintings, prints, and illustrations, many of them dreamy ecosystems

pulsating with colour. “I dwell a lot in the colourful world because the real world is often so grey,” this award-winning illustrator and artist says. Boothroyd’s work has appeared in books and galleries across Canada and abroad. Raised in West Vancouver, she studied at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design before spending three years at City and Guilds

College of Art in London, England. There she studied print-making, drank swimming pools of tea, and developed a love for the zany work of Quentin Blake, who first made a name for himself as the illustrator of Roald Dahl’s books. Later, Sa lived in the Laurentians of Quebec before migrating back to Vancouver in 1994. Her work now appears at craft shows such as One of a Kind in Toronto, Circle Craft
in Vancouver, and the Filberg Festival in Comox. Her most recent book illustrations, short-listed for a Red Cedar Book Award, can be seen in Before the World Was Ready: Stories of Daring Genius in Science (by Claire Eamer, Annick Press). sunshine coast yoga festival The organizers could not have been more proud of the first annual Sunshine Coast Yoga Festival. The schedule included a wide variety of yoga classes and styles, led by inspiring teachers from the Coast and beyond. Meditation sessions, guided hikes at Hidden Grove, educational speakers, and SUP Yoga on the water were all a part of the day. There was an abundance of healthy food from Wheatberries and the Skookum ‘Chuck Wagon, a henna tattoo artist, a Savasana resting space, and intuitive readings. The sun was shining and Porpoise Bay Park was bubbling with energy and nourished, blissed-out bodies with big smiles. The festival welcomed visitors to the Coast who came up for the event and many who were new to yoga. The most rewarding experience for the organizing group was to see local teachers, studios, and students gathering to celebrate the beauty of our home, the Sunshine Coast, and the practice of yoga. Festival organizers are back this year and invite everyone to join them on September 12—tickets on sale April 1— and share an even richer experience with yogis of all levels.

Inside a two-storey structure in Roberts Creek, which received a Green Design Award from the Canadian Wood Council in 2010, Nicolas Meyer designs and crafts custom spaces. Operating under his business name, Nico Spacecraft, he and his wife, Jess, established a successful design studio producing kitchens, furniture, interiors, and architectural elements. Clients range from private homeowners, architects, and agencies to fellow designers, craftspeople, and artists. Nico Spacecraft’s work earned international recognition for unique designs, precision work, and a focus on sustainability long before the “green trend” became popular.

Nicolas grew up in Hamburg, Germany, to a realestate–developing father and a mother in antiques; he was exposed to architecture, construction, and furniture throughout his youth. He later moved to Basel, Switzerland, a center for the arts. Living in the heart of Europe, twenty minutes from Germany’s Vitra Museum, Nicolas had access to practically everything he desired to shape his career. He trained as a maker of fine furniture before becoming a designer. After moving to Vancouver, he worked for companies such as Spearhead Timberworks and Kurt Sanders Ltd. before starting his own venture with Jess in 1997. diego’s den This section started as a space filler featuring photos of Diego, ZOOM’s yellow Labrador Retriever and his friends. It has since become our most popular section with the highest number of photo submissions. Diego passed away in August of last year, but his memory lives on in these pages, which will continue to showcase our beloved pets. Please send your favourite pet photos to diego@zoomsunshinecoast.com.
