AROUND THE WORLD IN WATER COLOUR Geographer, aspiring landscape painter and Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour member Hiroshi Shimazaki takes us on a cultural journey as he draws history and humanity in and out of the natural beauty of the world.

BALANCE: GLASS ARTISTS More than 20 renowned glass artists with works in stained, blown, fused, mosaic, painted and architectural glass.

OUR FOREST Sunshine Coast artists translate the deep and mysterious influence of nature’s power into visible art, expressing the voice and soul of our life-giving community forests.

RESTLESS FABLES Meghan Hildebrand’s paintings, which she describes as “story-maps of the imagination,” are constant exercises in innovation and improvisation.

POETRY OF BRANCHES Sherry Cooper celebrates the bare-branch structures of trees by combining photography and mixed media.

THIS SMALL MIGRATION A series of paintings inspired by Suzy Arbor’s commute from the Sunshine Coast to Vancouver.

TODD CLARK Todd Clark’s new body of work explores the planet from an altered point of view to discover nature’s unscathed fringes.

life on the coast. in pictures.

Nadina Tandy is a Vancouver-born Sunshine Coast artist with an extensive exhibition history, with works in various private and public collections in North America and Europe. Tandy’s process involves collecting and gathering what she sees as repeating patterns and making connections by following the pattern, much like a scientist gathering data.

“When I’m in my studio, my mind filled with imagery and research, I try to tap into my unconscious, to have my process form its own language. In essence, I simply have to let the process become what it will. I work directly on the canvas without preliminary drawings or sketches, often scraping and removing layers as I go. It is raw and direct. This method propels and inspires me.”

Power of Paint is the one of the Sunshine Coast’s largest art exhibitions, held on the same weekend as the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts and the Hackett Park Summer Arts & Crafts Fair, creating a synergetic artistic weekend in Sechelt. “The Power of Paint exhibition makes a significant contribution to this cultural hub that puts Sechelt on the map and enriches the lives of our residents and our visitors,” said Jane Davidson, Festival Coordinator, Festival of the Written Arts. Power of Paint benefits the local community by creating youth art scholarships, attracting visitors to Sechelt and the Sunshine Coast, building the calibre and reputation of creative business on the Coast, and sharing more than sixty works of world-class art.

Kent and Pauline Sturton from Richmond, BC, described the 2013 Power of Paint exhibition as “Wonderful Work! Labours of Love.” David Lee of Hamilton, Ontario, exclaimed, “What a surge of energy!” Last year more than 2,000 people visited Power of Paint, resulting in record art sales and raising $3,200 through sales of a collaborative art piece, to create a new local artists’ scholarship fund. Reflecting on last year’s show, artist Carol La Fave said, “We were excited by the unveiling of our first collaborative piece. As artists, our goal is always to explore new ways to draw out creativity and to inspire others while also giving back to our community.” Artist Greta Guzek is looking forward to the 2014 Power of Paint exhibition “Creating for and anticipating a ‘POP’ show is enormously exciting. Providing a weekend in which to share and multiply that enthusiasm with our community is very satisfying.”

“For us, doing creative things inspires more creative thoughts; the ideas roll in when you have needle or brush in hand. As the articles and art work developed and neared completion for the five issues of thr3fold journal, there would always be ideas that time didn’t allow us to pursue. Those ideas are about to see the light of day in this new exhibition . . . thr3fold unfinished business.” — thr3fold artists Linda Kemshall, Laura Kemshall, Catherine Nicholls

40 DAYS

ON EVEREST IN APRIL 2010, SUNSHINE COAST RESIDENT DIANNE WHELAN TRAVELED TO NEPAL AND MOUNT EVEREST BASE CAMP TO DIRECT AND SHOOT HER AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY FILM, 40 DAYS AT BASE CAMP. HER PERSONAL JOURNEY HAS SPAWNED A NEW BOOK PUBLISHED BY CAITLIN PRESS OF HALFMOON BAY. BASE CAMP: 40 DAYS ON EVEREST IS A GRIPPING EXPOSÉ REFERENCING DIANNE’S EXPERIENCE ON THE MAJESTIC YET DEADLY MOUNTAIN.

Each spring, more than 800 climbers attempt to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. Some make it to the top of what is considered the world’s most majestic mountain, but others are not so lucky, and in the attempt to reach the elusive summit, many more have tragically lost their lives. In Dianne Whelan’s personal and eye-opening exposé, Base Camp: 40 Days on Everest, she shares gripping stories of Maoist rebels, avalanches, and dead bodies surfacing out of a dying glacier. From her perspective at Base Camp, she interviews climbers, doctors, and Sherpas, all living there for months on end as they wait for a weather window to summit the top of the world. In this push to achieve the summit, many do not survive. Woven into these personal stories is the devastating truth of the human impact on the mountain and the eerie and unforeseen effects of climate change. Experts believe 250 bodies are buried on the path from Base Camp to the peak, and with the glacier melting at more than four inches a day, the toll of this desire to conquer Everest is surfacing irreversibly. This summer and fall, Dianne will be touring around Canada, the United States, and Great Britain, hosting public speaking and multimedia presentations on her book and film. She will also be at this year’s Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts as a featured author.

DIANNE WHELAN IS AN AWARD-WINNING CANADIAN FILMMAKER, PHOTOGRAPHER, AUTHOR, AND MULTIMEDIA ARTIST RESIDING IN GARDEN BAY, BC. ACCORDING TO THE NEPALESE GOVERNMENT, DIANNE IS THE FIRST WOMAN TO SHOOT A FILM ON THE WORLD’S HIGHEST MOUNTAIN. THE FILM HAD ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT THE VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, WAS THE OPENING-NIGHT FILM AT THE BANFF MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL, AND WAS SCREENED AT SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. 40 DAYS AT BASE CAMP IS CURRENTLY DISTRIBUTED IN 26 COUNTRIES AND HAS GONE ON TO HAVE MORE THAN 100 THEATRICAL AND FESTIVAL SCREENINGS INTERNATIONALLY. DIANNE WHELAN WAS THE RECIPIENT OF THE FLECK FELLOWSHIP FROM THE BANFF ARTS CENTRE IN 2011. 40 DAYS AT BASE CAMP WON TWO LEO AWARDS FOR BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY AND BEST SOUND DESIGN IN 2012.

URBAN COMES TO THE COAST Blue Heron Village is bringing urban to the Sunshine Coast! Longman Developments, the construction and development team behind the project, is transforming a central Gibsons location and its surrounding lands into a pedestrian village where commercial and residential life blend and fuse. The village is designed to combine the benefits of urban living with the beauty and tranquility of our Coast lifestyle.

LIVE WHERE YOU WORK Phase II of Blue Heron Village, currently under construction and slated for occupancy in late summer of this year, features live/ work condominium units designed so they can serve as a home, a combination residential and commercial space, or a full-time office, depending on the owner’s needs. In four of these units, each of the dual-purpose spaces has its own external entry, so clients and customers don’t have to walk through the home. With this feature, renting out part of the space becomes a possibility. Ground-level elevator access provides added convenience. Fiber optic internet capability and a central Gibsons location, with recreation and shopping nearby, makes any unit an ideal setup for entrepreneurs looking for office space, professionals who wish to work from home, and parents pursuing a homebased business while keeping close watch over the family.

VILLAGE HUB

The Longman Development team has laid plans for its overall vision for Blue Heron Village. With the success of Phase I, and with Phase II slated for completion in late summer, the initial stages of a pedestrianfriendly village have taken shape. Future phases are planned to center around a “4 Corners” community green space with pedestrian routes interconnecting the whole site.

MAHAN ROAD

Central to the Blue Heron Village lifestyle is the “walk to everything” convenience with the touch of a vibrant urban atmosphere. Neighborhood pub, banks, coffee shops, transit, grocery shopping, and massage are a few of the “walk-to” amenities, making everyday life simpler. This will help reduce, if not totally eliminate, automobile expenses.

FUTURE PHASES

Plans for future phased development include clustered residential units combined with additional live/work units and retail space. Blue Heron Village will embody “The Art of Living” at the heart of a desirable, world-renowned community. SUNSHINE COAST HIGHWAY

Projects like Island View Lanes and Cedar Gardens show that Longman Developments Ltd. isn’t interested in simple high-density cookie-cutter construction but in building high-quality, attractive housing that fits not only with the Coast lifestyle but with West Coast style. Combined with the success and popularity of the first phase of Blue Heron Village (home of Sheer Bliss Bakery Café, Bank of Montreal, Nelson Alvarez & Co, Gibsons Motion Massage, and Sprightly Software), Phase II will enhance the vitality of the neighbourhood. When Phase II is completed, Blue Heron Village will offer more than 10,000 square feet of commercial/retail space and feature six live/work residences serviced by an elevator and underground parking.

life on the coast. in pictures.

Photography has always been something I’ve enjoyed doing. I recall watching my dad use his light meter, fiddle with the dial on his camera, and always create beautiful images. I too wanted to make images like he did. I started my interiors/architectural photography business out of necessity and a strong desire to help people. Back in 2003, my family decided to move to the Coast. We were living in Squamish

at the time, and the most convenient and money-saving way to search for a house was online. As a buyer, if the pictures were bad, dimly lit, or of the couch in the living room, I would pass them by without a second thought. The online images were not good and really didn’t help us find a house. I ended up having to spend a lot of money, and I came to the Coast to search in person.

When we finally moved here, I knew that I could help. Not only I could help realtors, builders, designers, and architects promote themselves, their listings, and their work, but I was also helping the buyers—the folks searching from areas beyond the Coast. A home sells more quickly and gets more attention online with good-quality images, because people can see what it truly looks like; they begin to feel it. Savvy sellers are now looking for realtors who will present their biggest investment in the way it should be, with professional photography by First Impression Photography. Eleven years ago, curb appeal was the first impression people got when searching for a new home. But curb appeal has evolved into web appeal, and poor-quality images do not lend themselves well to web appeal. You get only one chance to make a First Impression.
