Andy’s grandfather bought a fishing lodge on Sakinaw Lake in 1943. Thus Andy grew up surrounded and influenced by lakes, oceans, mountains, forests, arbutus trees, and loons—the bounty and beauty of nature that is British Columbia. For Andy, the BC coast offers a natural canvas of colours, and his art captures and presents its many offerings in a way that recreates the experience, the moment, or feeling, so it can be shared and enjoyed by others.

Artists express their creativity through different mediums, but they are influenced by the same world, the natural world that energizes them. For me, it’s mostly about light, shapes, colour, and textures. My medium is photography, and I am very fortunate to have the rare opportunity of living amidst the beauty of coastal British Columbia. — Andy Cotton Chamberlayne

time well spent I have been spending too much time working in front of the computer. This means sitting for long hours—designing new websites or updating existing ones, creating layouts for print advertisements, brochures, posters, and other marketing materials, or working on an issue of ZOOM—leaving very little time for other activities that do not involve clicking a mouse.

A few months ago I updated the FibreWorks Gallery website with an announcement of a workshop by Jackie Abrams about creating catshead baskets. I have always liked woven baskets, and my growing collection of baskets from countries visited is proof of that. I have always wanted to learn to weave a basket, but Jackie’s workshop would last three days, and I felt I didn’t have the time for it. Still, I inquired about it and learned that the class was fully booked. After a few weeks I received an email that a space had become available. I looked at my full work schedule, but thought, Why not? I’ll just work late at night and during weekends to make up for lost time. During the workshop I learned the new meaning of words such as spokes, weavers, civilize, stop/start, twill, mend, lashing, and catshead. I learned how to paint sheets of 100% cotton paper, cut them into strips using a pasta machine, and weave them into functional baskets. After three days I had completed one basket, with two more in their very early stages, to be completed (on and off) in the succeeding four weeks. I couldn’t believe I had created these baskets myself! I was glad I took a few days away from the computer and learned to create something that didn’t require a monitor and a mouse. With each issue of ZOOM, I plan on writing about something new I have never tried or done before. This will help motivate me to start ticking off the list of activities and projects I have been neglecting for a long time. Edmund Arceo edmund@zoomsunshinecoast.com

Laughter has always been a big part of my life. When I paint I aim to create joyful images and bring a sense of happiness and lightheartedness to people. It’s important to our well-being, and after all, don’t we all look good in a smile? After obtaining my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Victoria, I travelled and lived abroad for many years, gathering the influences that now find their way into my work. Chinese brush painting, unusual shapes and patterns, expressionist mark-making all merge to identify my personal artistic style. I paint in series: flowers, boats, birds, land- and seascapes. I strive for exuberance in it all. My new seaside studio and gallery is part of the Purple Banner program and the popular Sunshine Coast Art Crawl. Various art venues exhibit my work, including the historical Sundowner Inn in Garden Bay and the Gibsons Public Gallery. My work sells internationally and has been published in several Singapore magazines and now the popular Sunshine Coast magazine ZOOM. — Christy Sverre SEE MORE OF CHRISTY SVERRE’S WORK AT WWW.CHRISTYSVERRE.COM OR CALL 604 989 2491.

mended Mended is a travelling exhibition of contemporary textile art by members of the Surface Design Association BC & Yukon, opening August 25 and continuing to October 4, 2015, at FibreWorks Gallery. An opening reception where the public can meet the artists will be held Saturday, August 29, 2 to 4 pm. For this exhibition twenty-five BC textile artists created new twoand three-dimensional works in response to the word mended. A broken heart, relationships, and even a pair of old socks can require mending at some point. Is it possible to make something more useful or functional by mending? And what about mending your ways? The works in this exhibition reflect diverse experiences and interpretations of mending through creative expressions about family, love, loss, and renewal.

power of paint Eleven Equal Artists are getting ready for their fourth annual Power of Paint exhibition. Supporting each other in their creative process, the eleven artists get together regularly to share new work and ideas. After a year of busily painting, exploring new directions and exciting developments in their art, the group is grateful to now display this new work to the public.

“I take painting seriously. I’m committed to my growth as an artist and therefore disciplined—it’s all I do. I never over-think the work. My sense of placement and form dispel any accidental configuration. The results are sometimes crude, sometimes beautiful, but never pretty.” —Ian MacLeod “My work has evolved to the essence of what I want to say. Simplified shapes and direct brush work.” —Nadina Tandy

“Life is about balance and energy. This is what I strive to accomplish in my work.”—Morley Baker “I see the beauty and spirit in my surroundings, in the landscape around me. This is what I try to capture and translate on canvas. It feels magical to me to witness viewers connecting to my intent . . . so grateful for that process.”—Marleen Vermeulen

“Art puts me in a place of my own. It allows me to express joy, happiness, or a feeling . . . it allows me to play with my own imagination. It allows me to create and see the world through colour, shapes, and patterns, and it gives me the permission to express my own uniqueness and to share another perspective with others.”—Carol LaFave “I am working this year on increasing the expressive quality of my brushwork and colour use. I would like to achieve a looser, more vigorous style”—Greta Guzek

“Like the garden, my paintings are a bit unruly this year. They need some extra trimming and editing, to tidy them up or maybe I should just let them be . . . like the garden.”—Kim LaFave “I’m interested in colour, light, mark-making, and the balance of control and spontaneity.”—Todd Clark

fire & ash the art of jack ploesser Clay is a beguiling material, tactile and mesmerizing to work with. It can be frustrating and demanding, but endlessly versatile. I fell in love with it at Carson Graham High School, and at sixteen I wanted to be a potter, but many other roads beckoned. I spent years driving taxis, city buses, and tour buses. I spent nearly a year in the Yukon and a full year in South America. A short flight to Haida Gwaii in 1975, in a beautiful vintage Grumman Goose, enticed me into a five-year pursuit of a flying career. I tended bar, and for a year I operated a huge camera with 10-foot bellows and a separate dark room. In 1990 I became a ceramics technician at Capilano College in North Vancouver, thus fulfilling my potter’s dream. Other than while in high school, clay has been in my blood since 1981. Most of the work is on the wheel, some of which is altered and assembled into larger pieces. I do some handbuilding too. The driving force for me is colour, sometimes pure copper red and other times layered glazes, which can make one glaze appear to float over another or create a “hare’s-fur” effect. Then there is Shino and carbon trap Shino, a true chameleon. I arrived on the Coast with my partner, Lynda, in 1999. In 2000 I built a 28-cubic-ft. gas kiln at our home in Roberts Creek. About once a month pyromania sets in and I fire the kiln. With a little prayer to the kiln goddess, I unload a bounty of pots. — Jack Ploesser

patt wilson’s
explorations EXPLORATIONS: Colour & Line is a series of experimental nonrepresentational pieces in which I break away from traditional imagery and study the balance between colour and line. Colour hue, intensity, and value excite me. Stitched lines, with variations in width, length, and direction, are my passion. Can I coax colour and line to share importance in each piece? Or will one win out over the other? It’s a dance, open to interpretation, which includes transparency and opacity, expanding and contracting space, texture and glow as its intricate steps. In my work I use surface-design techniques, including dyeing, discharging, overdyeing, painting, printing, and stitching, to transform a piece of white cloth. Often in my process I start with simple visual imagery, which evolves into in-depth imagery study, but this work relies solely on line as its imagery, which adds pattern and form to the compositions. — Patt Wilson

christopher mclaren My home is perched on a bluff level with treetops, so it offers some great opportunities for avian photography. Hummingbirds are a favourite by a long shot. The vital ingredients to getting a nice photograph are patience, patience, and more patience, with a dash of luck. Observation also plays a key role. When I shoot, I now keep both eyes open so I can follow the bird with one eye while looking through the viewfinder with the other, switching focus between the left and right eyes, a dizzying skill to acquire in the beginning.

synchronicity festival CHLOE LANGMAID
Last year saw a vast expansion in the Synchronicity Arts Festival. The event was nothing short of a success, going from two to three days; adding in a MainStage Series packed with amazing musicians from here and beyond and a Workshop Series with demos, discussions, and hands-on activities; including more vendors and interactive installations; and showcasing the return of the Rainforest Circus with its amazing collaborative multigenre show, The Underworld.
VERN BAHTI MINARD
Synchronicity literally has something for everyone. More than 80 musicians will take part in the MainStage Series and the (new in 2015) SecondStage Series. Also new this year will be a Makers’ Corner. Returning to Synchronicity are the Rainforest Circus and Workshop Series, even more thought-provoking interactive installations, the Community Village, local food, the Human Jukebox, a Libation Station featuring BC brews and ciders, and more.
VERN BAHTI MINARD
Musical acts will include: high-octane, delirium-inducing dance music from the nine-piece band Five Alarm Funk; Los Furios, a seven-piece ska and reggae band from Vancouver; prairie-indie Scenic Route to Alaska; western, gypsy, punk, and blues by Devil in the Woodshack; folk, rock, and roots band Carmanah; folk, pop, story-telling Mike Edel; soundscape percussionist Tippy Agogo; Pendomoja, a seven-piece soca, funk, and jazz group; dub, roots, and reggae music by Railtown Sound System; original folk delivered with old-time charm from the Blackwood Two; country punk Wasted Strays; swinging Staggers & Jaggs; acoustic-rich, melodic Joe Stanton and Simon Paradis; the ska, funk, punk, reggae waltzes of PeteCastastrophe; and . . .
CHLOE LANGMAID
We’re aiming to outdo ourselves in 2015. At its stunning location in Shirley Macey Park in Gibsons, BC, the Synchronicity Arts Festival will continue with its threeday line-up, August 21–23, featuring music, circus, arts, workshops, and more! So much more!
Let the games begin!

Building Excellence on the Coast Building a new home can be one of the most expensive and stressful experiences in your life. Managing sub-trades, keeping them on time, keeping the whole process on budget, dealing with government departments and inspectors is a major undertaking. Being your own General Contractor can be very rewarding but it comes with costs and risks and a lot of stress.
With our fixed contract pricing, building on budget is our risk, not yours!
Through the more than 20 years Longman Developments Ltd has been building homes, they have developed a fixed contract construction process that guarantees your home will be built on-time and onbudget with almost no stress on your part. With a Fixed Contract Agreement, prior to the first shovel touching dirt you will know what is going to be built, how much it is going to cost and when it is going to be completed. Longman Developments Ltd will work with you through the entire design process, from choosing and purchasing the lot to picking paint colours for the walls. Whether you have a set of stock plans, an architect you’re working with or just an idea and a sketch and want their in-house design team to create the plans, they will work with you to design the home you want with the budget you have. Once the design and layout of your home has been decided, Longman Developments Ltd will put together a Fixed Contract Agreement which will detail what will be built, when it will be completed and how much it will cost. Once you’ve signed the agreement, they will get to work and you can relax until it’s time to call the moving company to move your furniture and effects into your brand new home, a home that is covered by a 2-5-10 National Home Warranty governed by the Homeowners Protection Office. Longman Developments Ltd is also willing to work with you to arrange vendor financing or other creative ways to get you into the brand new home that you want.
Building a home might be stressful but one of the best ways to reduce the impact on your nerves is to deal with people you can trust; people that deliver a quality product on time and on budget. The Longman Developments team did just that and it is our pleasure to recommend their services to anyone looking to purchase a quality product or to have your own home built to spec. – Gerry and Betsy
Longman Developments prides itself on building functional and attractive housing and commercial developments that improve the character of the local neighbourhood. The quintessential “Longman West Coast” style which incorporates premium features such as Hardie Siding, large-form fir posts and beams, pine soffits, brick driveways, granite countertops and engineered hardwood floors, sets our development projects apart from the competition. Longman Developments is a name built on trust, integrity and reliability.

Custom decorative concrete is a unique feature that has gained popularity on the Sunshine Coast in recent years. Tub surrounds, vanity countertops, decorative yet functional design elements, and modern furniture pieces made of highperformance concrete have found their way in many local coastal homes. Julien Ruinat, owner and designer of La Côte Concrete Design, specializes in custom concrete kitchen and bathroom countertops as well as custom wall panels, tiles, water features, fire pits, fireplace surrounds, and furniture for outdoor and indoor living spaces. Originally from southern France, Julien has called the Sunshine Coast home since 2011. La Côte Concrete Design brings inspiration from natural environments, modern design, and functionality into each custom piece. Concrete offers unlimited opportunities for creativity through the use of colour, texture, and form. Julien’s work challenges the way concrete is traditionally viewed— not only as a building material but a unique modern design element.

YOUR HOME’S PRIMARY DEFENCE Making a sound choice when it comes to the installation of your roof—your home’s primary defence against the elements—can be a daunting task. There are many different roofing material options to consider, with each one offering a wide spectrum of choices: product type, service life and necessary maintenance. Each of the many options has its advantages depending on your home’s location, design and specific requirements. Longevity, low maintenance and sustainability are the primary concerns when considering your new roof. A good quality metal roof rates high on these three counts and is therefore considered the ultimate choice. With an expected 50-year life span, a good metal roof provides long-term cost benefits, when compared to most asphalt shingled roofs that would have to be replaced twice, if not three times, over the same period of time.
THE COST FACTOR: PRICE VS. VALUE “I want a hidden fastener standing seam metal roof, please!” You can ask several suppliers for a quote and expect to receive highly varying quotes, which will possibly not be comparing apples to apples, so to speak. Roofing panels are manufactured in many gauges, numbered from 22 to 29—the higher the number the thinner the metal. All these gauges come coated in different paint types and colours, each with different advantages. The distance of your home from the ocean could dictate the finish, which can limit the available choices for color and metal gauge. Then comes the all-important question of whether there is a local company who have a longstanding reputation, a team you can trust, with full liability insurance and an experienced, knowledgeable crew. Fortunately, the answer is yes. We at Nelson Roofing & Sheet Metal are ready to help. Call us today for a quote.
A METAL ROOF: THE IDEAL CHOICE If you have decided on a metal roof, it is important to evaluate possible maintenance costs. One of the key points to consider: fastener systems. Where you can see the fasteners holding the panels down, there will be an ongoing maintenance cost. These fasteners rely on soft gaskets, which need be checked regularly and renewed at 10 to 15-year intervals. This can be time consuming, and therefore, costly! Fortunately, there is a solution: roofing panels with hidden fasteners. There are modern panels that clip together or panels with seams that are crimped down. The latter is a trusted, time-tested system that we at Nelson Roofing highly recommend. There are many examples of seam roofs which have stood for more than 100 years, proving that good ideas last.

APS Alternative Power Systems
Nelson Roofing recently completed a new roof installation on the rebuilt Grasshopper pub in Pender Harbour. Alternative Power Systems (based in Sechelt) fitted a large solar system to the roof. One advantage of a traditional profile is the ease of installing a rail system on the seams, with fittings that do not puncture the roofing, therefore no warranties are invalidated.
“Nelson Roofing & Sheet Metal has not only been recognized for winning the 2011 Metalmag Architectural Award (Roofing Category), but the Cumberland BC based contractor can truly be commended for its artistry in metal roof construction of Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) Centre for Shellfish Research field station.” - Canadian Roofing Contractor & Design

life on the coast. in pictures.
Mark Benson is one of our highly respected photographers on the Sunshine Coast. Through his photographs we experience fleeting moments that would otherwise have gone unnoticed and unappreciated. Mark’s work first graced our pages two years ago, where he also shared thoughts about his journey with the camera: “For me, photography is more than just taking pictures, it’s a spiritual practice. It teaches me to be present in the moment, to notice the subtle play of light and colour, to unveil the earth’s mysteries that are shrouded in time’s restless movement, revealing the Divine through composition, exposure, and depth of field.” His travels recently led him to explore India’s culturally diverse and complex landscape, where he ventured beyond the usual tourist haunts—into the rich and beautiful countryside. We are honoured that Mark is sharing with us a glimpse into parts of this world and its people.
MARK’S PHOTOGRAPHS CAN BE VIEWED IN GALLERIES ON THE SUNSHINE COAST, AND HIS PRINTS ARE AVAILABLE IN MANY GIFT SHOPS. HE OFFERS GICLEE CANVAS AND ARCHIVAL PRINTING FROM HIS HOME STUDIO. HE IS ALSO A SOUGHT-AFTER PHOTOGRAPHY INSTRUCTOR, OFFERING BOTH PRIVATE AND GROUP COURSES. TO CONTACT MARK, VISIT HIS WEBSITE AT WWW.MARKBENSONPHOTOGRAPHY.CA OR CALL 604.865.0232.

CALL FOR PHOTO SUBMISSIONS We are planning a special edition of Diego’s Den featuring photos of pets with their humans (and if possible, showing our beautiful local scenery as well, similar to the photo shown here). Please send your photos to diego@zoomsunshinecoast.com for this special photo spread in a forthcoming issue of ZOOM.
Miguel by ZOOM
This section started as a space filler featuring photos of Diego, ZOOM’s yellow Labrador Retriever and his friends. It has since become our most popular section with the highest number of photo submissions. Diego passed away in August of last year, but his memory lives on in these pages, which will continue to showcase our beloved pets. Miguel (ZOOM’s new puppy) takes over editorial duties starting with this issue. Please send your favourite pet photos to diego@zoomsunshinecoast.com.
