This was made even worse when one of the escapees reportedly phoned a local radio station, boasting about the fact that he was now free once more to do as he liked. Given Mpofu (24), Dzulani Nemukula (23), Evans Chipara and Trust Chikwadzi were reportedly being transported in a police vehicle to the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court last Friday. They grabbed the opportunity to escape when they were off-loaded at the court. According to the spokesperson for the Limpopo police, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the four suspects overpowered the police officer who was transporting them and took his duty pistol before

running away. “We are appealing to members of the community to provide us with information regarding this case and the escapees’ whereabouts,” said Mulaudzi. In the meantime, news about the escape of the “people who have been terrorising the community of Tshikota” spread through the Makhado area like wildfire. Soon the Tshikota community, both local residents and immigrants, converged at the community hall to talk about their safety and how they could hunt the criminals. The situation quickly got out of hand, with residents accusing the police of doing very little to protect the community. They started barricading all the streets with stones, rubbish bins and fallen trees and some residents also burnt tyres. The police reportedly arrived in motor vehicles and helicopters to restore order. “They fired rubber bullets at demon-

strators,” said the leader of the Makhado Zim Community, Mr Gift Eglone. The situation was defused when local residents, immigrants living in Tshikota and Cllr Abraham du Plooy (Ward 21) managed to arrange that a meeting with the Makhado police’s station commander, Lt Francois Ramovha, and Makhado SAPS cluster commander Brig Alex Seopa be held. “We reached a resolution to start building a strategic partnership between the South Africans, the immigrants and the police in Tshikota,” said Eglone. “We’ve unified ourselves to become an anti-crime entity.” On Sunday afternoon, the local radio station, Makhado FM, received a call from a person who identified himself as Given Mpofu. Listeners who know Mpofu later stated that it sounded exactly like the fugitive. In the radio interview, the caller stated that he was shocked about the fact that

the residents of Tshikota were making such a fuss about his being out of prison. A copy of the interview was handed over to the police for further investigation. On Tuesday, members of the Tshikota community started clearing away the litter, stones and burnt tyres from the streets. “We believe that the police will play their part in this case, as much as the community will play its role,” said Gift Eglone. Given Mpofu’s alleged criminal activities in Tshikota had initially divided the community into two groups, the South Africans and the Zimbabweans. In the second week of November 2013, the community members went berserk and burnt down a hostel, set Mpofu’s lover’s RDP house on fire and went out looking for Mpofu as he was thought to have been the leader of a group which had been terrorising the community. Residents were armed with iron rods, sticks,

stones and wires. Mpofu and his two co-accused, Dzulani Nemukula (23) and Courage Shoko (23), were arrested later on 27 November at Gogobole village. Cllr Abraham du Plooy (Ward 21) said that the community members were angry when they received news that the suspects believed to have been terrorising the community had escaped. “They thought the police had just released the suspects,” Du Plooy said. “But it’s bad to see the residents taking the law into their own hands and breaking the very infrastructure which belongs to them. The police are busy with the investigations into the escapees’ case; people must only inform the police about the crimes taking place among them.” Du Plooy said that another way of effectively winning the fight against crime was to start structuring the community policing forum in Tshikota.

Special task team to investigate murder

Floods claim two lives in Nzhelele Two young lives were lost during the prolonged rainfall at Tshituni-Tsha-Ratombo at Nzhelele last Friday. Rotshidzwa Makongoza and Takalani Sinugo, both 14 years old, drowned at the Nwambedi River in Tshituni. They were attempting to cross the overflowing river after attending an athletics meeting at Patrick Ramaano Secondary School at Ha-Matidza. They initially crossed the river, but after learning that the competition had been cancelled due to the constant rain, they had to return home. The river, however, was flowing faster and its level had risen. Three of them attempted to cross the fast-flowing river; unfortunately, only one of them survived. The teenagers were all in Grade 9 at Luatame Secondary School. Hector Ravuku (14) survived the tragedy. He was saved by some branches alongside the river, but Rotshidzwa and Takalani, who were in front, apparently slipped on some stones and were swept away. The body of Rotshidzwa was

found the very same day and Takalani’s body was discovered the following morning. The accident had shocked the parents and the whole community. The mothers of the children were still traumatised when Limpopo Mirror visited their homes on Tuesday. The survivor, Hector Ravuku, was taken for counselling. Rotshidzwa’s mother, Ms Tshililo Makongoza (34), was shocked and could not believe what happened. “I have lost my son abruptly and unexpectedly. I am traumatised,” said a weeping Ms Makongoza. Ms Mashudu Ralushai, the mother of Takalani, could not speak since she was still nursing the pain of her son’s dreadful death. The ward councillor, Cllr Gloria Nemafhohoni, said the incident had shocked almost every member of the community. “When we heard about this, we did not know where to start. But we had to accept and understand that young lives were lost,” said Cllr Nemafhohoni. Takalani and Rotshidzwa will be buried tomorrow (Satur-

day) at the Tshituni-Tsha-Fhasi cemetery. Meanwhile, Limpopo police divers warned communities to be vigilant about overflowing dams and rivers. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Col Ronél Otto appealed to the public, especially in the Vhembe region, to be cautious. “Members of the Limpopo SAPS Search and Rescue Unit are appealing to community members to be extra careful when crossing swollen streams and rivers, following the prolonged and persistent rain in the province,” Col Otto said. According to the police, two men who were fishing in Vuwani were swept away when the river suddenly flash-flooded. Divers successfully rescued one of them. On Tuesday, they were still searching for the other man. Col Otto added that although the current of water might appear slow, it could sweep a person’s feet from under them very quickly. The police also requested people to refrain from using alcohol when they ventured into an area where there were dams, streams or rivers.

The national police commissioner, Riah Phiyega, has established a special team of police detectives to investigate the alleged ritual murder case which led to riots around the Kutama area. Phiyega made this announcement on Sunday during a meeting with Kutama residents at the Muduluni Community Hall. During the riots, schools in this area were closed. Phiyega defended the police, saying their public order unit was one of the best on the continent. “It is just unfortunate that some officers acted against the law. I promise to turn things around at Tshilwavhusiku police station as they have turned the community into an enemy,” said Phiyega. “In connection with the death of a man whose body was found hanging from the roof of a defunct shop at Madodonga in December, the police detained nine suspects, who were later released due to a lack of evidence. The police should have explained to the community why the nine suspects were released,” she said. Phiyega said the provincial police commissioner, Fanie Masemola, should evaluate the efficiency of the provincial police,

especially at Tshilwavhusiku. “I will reinstate all the cases that were dumped by the Tshilwavhusiku police. We are also going to have a multi-disciplinary task team composed of senior police officials, pastors, community leaders, traditional leaders, municipal officers, civic association leaders and businesspeople, to resolve all the issues causing unrest in the Kutama area. This structure will sit weekly and the community will receive all the information from their leaders,” she said.

Ms Nditsheni Nemukondeni, the mother of 15-year-old Ndanganeni Nemukondeni, who was found dead in 2002 at Midoroni in Kutama area, said she wanted Phiyega to re-open her son’s case, “which the Tshilwavhusiku police allegedly dumped many years ago”. She claims that her son was murdered. “When I asked the police how far the case was, they told me they didn’t deal with cases that had only one witness. They then dumped the case,” she alleges.

Fisherman swept away by angry Levuvhu When four friends from the Tshino area left their houses last Monday, they expected it to be a regular day of fishing at the nearby Luvhuvhu river. Little did they know that, a few hours later, they would be fighting for their lives against a raging river, a fight one of them very likely did not survive. Khathutshelo Ramanyimi (30), Muthuphei Mpilo (33), Livhuwani Mabasa (41) and Stanley Nedzamba depend on fishing to feed their families. For some strange reason, which none of them could explain, they did not go to their usual spot on Monday morning. Their new spot next to the river held Dead: Rotshidwza Makongoza Dead: Takalani Sinugo. a couple of surprises, the first being more fish than they had caught in a long time. The second surprise was less pleasant. The river started to swell unexpectedly and a strong current swept them away. One of the survivors, Khathutshelo Ramanyimi, later recalled the traumatic episode: “We were in a joyful mood as we were catching a lot more fish than usual. Just as we were thinking of getting out of the river, we were surprised by a heavy current coming from upstream. We were surprised as there was no rain at the time and we did not expect a full river. We know that they sometimes open the weir at the Albasini dam, but they do so in the evening. This was a nasty and shocking surprise which caught us off-guard.” Khathutshelo cannot remember much of what had happened, but he still remembers that he and Livhuwani Mabasa grabbed hold of a tree in the river. Mabasa was then swept away by the strong current. A police rescue team arrived later and rescued him from the river. “It was a very trying experience. I kept praying that God would spare me, and I am glad that He saved me, but I am worried that our friend has not been located so far. Muthuphei Mpilo, another survivor, said he would never go fishing again. “What I experienced has taught me something that I lacked in life. It is dreadful, and I vow that I will never venture into water again. I only have God to thank for saving my life. I should have been dead,” he said. The incident sent shock waves through the village and surrounding areas. Several volunteers from nearby villages helped in the search for the missing man. Police divers combed the river further downstream towards Nandoni, but to no avail. Chief Nthambeleni Ranennyeni of Tshifhefhe, who called the police, said it was a dreadful experience. “We are very disturbed by what had happened here, because the Water Affairs people are not following the right procedure. They must inform us as traditional leaders if they want to open the water at Albasini. We can then inform our communities that they should be careful. Nevertheless, we are still making an appeal to the community out there not to venture into the water. Besides the swelling river, there are crocodiles that have killed may people in this river. Please stay away from the river,” said Ranenyeni.

Angry community destroy houses and cars advantage of the situation during the riots and looted a spaza shop and tavern in Manavhela village. They had allegedly also damaged the main gate to the home of Mr Prince Ratipa before burning down the five-room house and two cars. The crowd then vented their anger even further and burnt down two police cars. According to Ratipa, everything inside the house was burnt to ashes. “Clothes, beds, blankets, a BMW X5 and Golf and bank cards, the stove, fridge and all the furniture were destroyed,” he said. The fire also damaged the roof and the walls of the house. According to Ratipa, the damage to his property is estimated to be more than R6 million. The Kutama royal council spokesperson, Vhamusanda Vho-Ntanganedzeni Kutama,

called for calm in Kutama and requested community members who might have information regarding the case to contact the police. He appealed to the community to leave the school children alone to go school. The police arrested 93 suspects and 32 appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court last Friday. The minors were released by the police. The cases against the 32 suspects were postponed to today (Friday) for bail applications. They face charges of arson, public violence, theft and malicious damage to property. On Tuesday 46 appeared in court on charges of arson, public violence, theft and malicious damage to property. They were released and The family of Prince Ratipa need assistance warned to again appear in court after their home was set alight. At this stage, on 7 April. they are living in a car.

The birtday of the bishop, whose ministry has branches all over Africa, was celebrated by hundreds of congregants at the church grounds at Nkuzana village on Sunday Guests included Black Leopards boss and bishop of the UAAC David Thidiela, Reris Insurance owner businessman David Mureri and other esteemed

guests from as far as the Eastern Cape. Mureri urged the congregation to take care of its aging leader. “He is living his bonus years and you have to show it by giving generously as a way of celebrating a life well lived,” he said. Mureri, who was with his wife Gloria, gave the bishop bundles of R100 notes, and businessman David Thidiela and his wife did the same. They were joined by the congregation and the guests, who gave generously to the bishop. Ndadza, who was close to tears, asked all to stand up and

observe a moment of silence in honour of his wife and his late son. “I am so humbled; I just wish my wife and my son were here to witness this. It was not easy all these years, but with the guidance of God as my shelter, I am happy that I was able to reach this far. So many things have happened throughout my life, and seeing so many people having turned to God makes me very happy,” he said. Ndadza announced that he will soon be embarking on nationwide crusade to bring more and more people to the fold of God.

Sibasa’s roads in sorry state of decay Sibasa town, one of the best-kept areas in its time and the oldest town in Vhembe, is fast deteriorating and becoming a shadow of its former self. On entering the town, one is met by large potholes, which are more like swimming pools on rainy days. The town has become even more disfigured by a construction site, alleged to be a new taxi rank but construction of which has stalled since last year. The town is in a state of total decay. The potholes have angered not only motorists but even the local community, who feel they are being neglected. Taxi drivers and other motorists have to compete for lanes. Numerous vehicles are said to have lost tyres because of the big potholes. Vehicle owners who spoke on condition of anonymity said the road has become a matter of “survival of the fittest” between cars, taxis and buses. “It is not surprising to find a car driving straight at you in your lane in trying to avoid the big potholes. We have had incidents here where cars have been scratched while scrambling for the way. It is very bad here; even the rural villages are better,“ said one owner. Mr Solomon Shandukani, chairperson of the Vhembe District Taxi Council, said the state of the roads generally is pathetic. “It is terrible. We do

not even know what to say. We are very disturbed by the state of our roads,” he added. “We are really running at great losses because of the bad roads. Our vehicles are wearing out on a daily basis, and we are incurring losses which would otherwise have been avoided if it were not for the bad roads," he said. Shandukani said what was adding to their woes was the envisaged taxi rank which had just stalled, with no progress taking place. Crack down on cross-border thieves Police at Beit Bridge have launched an antistock-theft operation, following an upsurge in cases of organised cross-border cattle rustling in the district. Police spokesperson Chief Supt Patrick Majuta said it was revealed during a district crime consultative meeting held at Lutumba Business Centre on Friday that 131 cases of stock theft were reported between January and December last year. He said 143 heads of cattle, 98 donkeys, 32 sheep, 290 goats and 201 chickens were lost. "We are worried about the rampant theft of livestock around the Beit Bridge district. We are fully aware that livestock farming is the main agricultural activity in this area, and we have intensified the fight against stock theft. It is shocking that, out of 143 cattle that were stolen last year, we only recovered 53 and our worry is that some cases go unreported. We are therefore calling on members of the community to complement our efforts in the fight against stock theft," he said. Majuta said they had tightened regulations controlling the movement and sale of livestock. "We have introduced brand and sales registers of all livestock, that will be kept by both traditional leaders and the police for easy accountability and crime detection.” The spokesperson of the Beit Bridge Farmers Association, Mr Salatiel Muleya, urged traditional leaders and the local authority to complement police efforts in fighting the scourge. He said some the stolen cattle were smuggled out of the country to South Africa and Mozambique through the Sengwe and Madimbo corridors.

The freak accident on the corner of Shongozwi and Kruger Street left this Volkswagen Polo looking like Pablo Picasso had gotten hold of it. A small delivery truck carrying white and red paint lost its load while it was waiting for the traffic light to change colours at the intersection. Unfortunately, the paint did not only fall on the road, but also on the driver's side of this vehicle.

Pedestrians on their way home Tuesday stopped to scoop up paint that had spilled during an accident which occurred at the intersection of Songozwi and Kruger Street in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). The accident also left a Volkswagen Polo splattered with paint. Fortunately, nobody was injured during the incident, but it will probably cost a pretty penny to have the Polo cleaned.

Residents are complaining that the R17 million project, which should have been operational for a period of year now, is not providing water at all. In December 2011, the bulk-water

project was launched by the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) to provide water at Ha-Matsa, Manyii and Mamvuka. The municipality awarded the tender to Muravha Building and Civil CC. Within a time frame of 12 months, three reservoirs were built and the pipes to a borehole were installed. Residents waited enthusiastically in the belief that their water problems would soon be a thing of the past. According to some of the community members, the contractor was advised to use the borehole a few metres away from the reservoir. Apparently the contractor ignored them and connected the supply pipes to the borehole in Manyii, which is kilometres away from the reservoir. Residents pointed out that the pipes would then have to pass by the Khandanama River in Manyii village and when it rained the plastic pipes would get damaged. “When this project started, we tried advising them that if they connected pipes that would pass by that river it would be a disaster,” said Ha-Matsa’s SANCO chairperson, Mr Samuel Funyufunyu. Mrs Sadiki said the community saw very little benefit in the water-supply project. “All he (the contractor) did was to destroy our old pipes. He should have consulted the community. Those reservoirs are white elephants,” she added. Mr William Maanda said it was established that there were illegal connections to the main pipe which used to deliver water to Ha-Matsa. Apparently, residents of Mutititi and Tshirolwe illegally connected their home taps to the main pipe. “We collect water from the river and it is polluted. Our lives are at risk. It is election time now, and why should we vote?” said Mr Maanda. VDM spokesperson Mr Matodzi Ralushai insisted that the problem was mainly caused by the illegal connections of pipes to the main line. He said they were working with traditional leaders to address the problem of illegal connections. Mr Ralushai chose to distance himself from the heated issue of the bulk-water project. “Most projects are faced with challenges; however, we are trying to resolve those challenges. We want to ensure that those projects are up and running,” he said.

UNCHR donation for Tshitandani High-profile representatives from various international agencies and local childcare role players attended a major handing-over of significant donations to the child- and youth-care centre of Tshitandani Foundation in Tshikota last week. A senior team from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in South Africa, representatives of the international organisation Save the Children, the local Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS) and local church representatives attended the celebration in Tshikota on Wednesday. The donations consists of, among others, high-quality bedding, mattresses, blankets, sheets and food vouchers for

the children. The 25 boys at present in the care centre consist of a majority of orphaned Zimbabwean children of various school-going ages. Visiting representatives of the various international organisations expressed their appreciation for the work being done at Tshitandani and said they were encouraged by such partnerships with NGOs. According to JRS statistics, some 200 unaccompanied minors passed through Makhado (Louis Trichardt) last year. The deputy regional representative (protection) of the UNHCR in South Africa, Ms Veronica Irima Modey-Ebi, said that, regardless of how strangers arrived in a country, it was that country’s responsibility to treat them with dignity. Having experienced international crises in countries in Asia and elsewhere in Africa, where people were uprooted and bewildered, she stressed that timely support and assistant is needed. Referring to the work being done at Tshitandani in Tshikota, she said her organisation was happy to be part of the caring and upliftment being accorded to these children. The manager of the Tshitandani centre, Mr Andries Smal, described the presence of Modey-Ebi with her valuable experience in many other countries as a blessing for Tshitandani. As an integral part of the care giving, schooling and skills development for the boys, Tshitandani also has an exit strategy, namely to deliver them eventually into the community as responsible, self-supporting adults. The chairperson of Tshitandani Child Foundation, Rev Johann Fourie, expressed relief at the generous donations by the UNHCR. He said these donations came in good time as a welcome relief and as the fulfilment of dire needs.

Councillor sponsors repair of roads in Beit Bridge The chairperson of the Beit Bridge Town Council’s finance and administration committee, Cllr Max Chikova, has hired a grader at his own expense to repair damaged roads in the border town. Chikova, the councillor for Ward 1, said the grader operator targeted roads that were extensively damaged by the rains last year. He said the move was part of the promises he had made to the community. Chikova, a prominent businessman in Beit Bridge, said his workers had so far managed to re-gravel a 2km stretch of the road in the low-density area at a cost of $1 000. “The town council is cash-strapped, hence I have mobilised my own resources to rehabilitate most damaged roads in the low-density area. I am working with the local business community in creating a ward-development fund with the view of tarring roads in our area and also repairing other key infrastructure, such as street lights and boreholes,” he said. Chikova called on the business community to consider giving back to the community by championing projects such as repairing and constructing key infrastructure. He said the town council was involved in a number of developmental projects, but poor funding was affecting progress. He also urged residents and other ratepayers to settle their bills on time to ensure that the local authority remained a viable entity. Chikova is a successful farmer who also runs several bottle stores in the town, hardware shops and a piggery project. Scholarship for young Rofhiwa A plan for consistent water flow in Makhado town

Her mother, who was a music teacher, passed away in 2008.

AfriForum’s action plan for supplying water to Makhado (Louis Trichardt) is being implemented and hopes are high that a consistent water flow will become a reality. The action plan recognizes the fact that water shortages can often be attributed to the inevitable leaks on the ageing Albasini pipeline, which supplies water to the majority of residents, as well as to the constantly vandalized 14 boreholes southwest of town which supply the older part of town. The Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) agreed to drill new boreholes near the Mowkop reservoir and the Bergh Street reservoir. “AfriForum has insisted that an alternative water supply be found via the drilling of new boreholes close to each reservoir, and the linking of existing boreholes that are in close proximity to a reservoir,” local AfriForum chairperson Wally Schultz said last week. The reasoning is obvious. Sources to augment the water supply in the case of a shutdown of the Albasini plant for repairs are urgently needed. “We already know that the Albasini pipeline will develop new leaks on a predictably regular basis. When this does happen, the Albasini pump system gets shut down to facilitate repairs. Each time this happens, depending on the severity of the leak, shutdowns have sometimes lasted up to seven days at a time,” Schultz said. He had called an urgent summit with VDM on 22 January. At the summit held in Thohoyandou, Vhembe’s municipal manager, Mr Masala Makumule, and their technical services manager, Mr Walter Madimutsa, along with their management team accepted the AfriForum action plan. VDM has appointed Muteo Consulting of Mr Hangwani Makwarela as consulting engineers to oversee the projects. Work-

ers are currently laying the pipeline from the strong De la Rey Street borehole to link it directly to the Bergh Street reservoir. The linking of this borehole should bring relief to the central business district and surrounding residential areas. “Three new boreholes are being drilled around Mowkop, according to the AfriForum action plan, to bring relief to ‘new town’ and surrounds,” says Schultz. AfriForum has demanded the urgent renovation of all 14 boreholes that have been dysfunctional for years. Vhembe accepted this demand and contractors are renovating and replacing pumps, which will bring relief to these desperate residents. Another demand is the much-needed improving of the security situation at all water infrastructure under Vhembe’s management. Makumule confirmed this week that a threefold plan for security was ensuing.

“The security guards have been appointed and will be employed as from 1 February. A request for telemetric security had been given to the supply-chain manager to revive the cell phone security system that was used successfully before and, on top of that, concrete block houses will be installed at the boreholes. The contractor is already busy at the old boreholes. Four of these boreholes are already working,” Makumule said. “AfriForum is pleased to see Vhembe accepting and implementing our solution-driven action plan. When completed, we will finally see a permanent end to this drawn-out water crisis saga, due to an effective policy of constructive engagement,” Schultz said. The MM gave a realistic summary by saying, “We are improving on the water infrastructure but still have operational problems.”

No bail for Ha-Mashau murder suspect A 20-year-old resident of Mashau, Hulisani Makhaga, briefly appeared in the Vuwani Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday on two charges of murder. The case relates to an incident at Ha-Mashau on 31 November last year, where Ms Florence Mashau and her 19-year-old

daughter, Tondani, were shot dead. Makhaga has also been charged with theft out of a motor vehicle and attempted murder. It is alleged that he stole his grandfather’s firearm out of his vehicle. The case was postponed to 6 February for further

investigations and he remains in custody. Meanwhile, his 68-year-old grandfather and former police officer, Mr Takalani Makhaga, who has been charged with negligent handling of a firearm, appeared in court and the case was postponed to 7 February.

The 15-year-old Rofhiwa Mukhondo of Thohoyandou P-West is very excited and optimistic about her future after she was announced as the winner of the first Thandulwazi Galactic Unite Africa Scholarship. The scholarship is “designed to support students with strong language proficiency and academic excellence with particular achievement in science and mathematics”. A Grade 10 pupil at St Stithians Girls College, Rofhiwa was in Grade 9 at Lee Rand High School on the East Rand when she was awarded the three-year scholarship programme (2014 to 2016) late last year. “I still get goose bumps when I think of how big and great this scholarship is,” said Rofhiwa. “Every now and then I have to pinch myself to realise that I’m not stuck in an illusion but am facing reality.” A high achiever academically, Rofhiwa enjoys writing poetry and drama and plans to study neurology once she has completed Grade 12. “I want to become an esteemed neurosurgeon, a passion I hold very close to my heart,” she said. In her letter of appreciation, Rofhiwa thanked the Thandulwazi Galactic Unite Africa Scholarship and St Stithians Girls College, which accommodated her as a recipient. “I can only show my gratitude towards all of you by not only excelling, but also exceeding the expectations that we have agreed upon,” she wrote. Town secretary Singo buried Beit Bridge Town Secretary and renowned academic and businessman Dr Sipho Singo (56) was buried on his farm in Mazunga on Saturday. He recently succumbed to heart failure at the Polokwane Provincial Hospital. Speaking during a memorial service for Singo ahead of his burial, Zimbabwe’s Home Affairs Minister, Mr Kembo Mohadi, said the country had been robbed of a great leader and strategist. “We have lost one of the greatest minds and implementers in the country, who had a strong passion for development. He was committed to ensuring the speedy transformation of Beit Bridge Town into a modern economic zone and city,” said Mohadi. He described Singo as passionate development agent who would be difficult to replace. Mohadi said that, before his death, Singo had come up with a host of measures to speed up the completion of the Beit Bridge redevelopment programme. “Our town has become a model of development because of Dr Singo’s hands-on approach and quality leadership skills,” said Mohadi. “We had lined up a number of capital projects together, including the setting up of a university in Beit Bridge, and I want to assure you that as leaders we will carry forward that vision.” Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Egypt, Mr Aaron Maboyi Ncube, said Dr Singo was a man who took developmental issues seriously. “We will greatly miss this son of the soil who dedicated most of his life to working towards the development of our town and the country as a whole.” Singo’s condition deteriorated on the day before his death and he was rushed to Musina Hospital the following day. He was referred to Polokwane Provincial Hospital, where he died upon admission. He is survived by his wife Agnes and daughter Tendani, aged five.

Man from the Cape searches for his lost relatives The 40-year-old Robert Landu from Summergreens in Cape Town is looking for the family of his father. He says they are the Mulaudzis and that they probably stay around Nzhelele. Robert drove all the way from Cape Town last Thursday and spent the weekend searching for his unknown relatives. Unfortunately he had to return to Cape Town a disappointed man. Meanwhile, the Nzhelele community members introduced Robert to the veteran gospel artist Vho-Paul Mulaudzi, who then suggested that Robert should speak to Limpopo Mirror. On Saturday afternoon, Robert explained his story to the journalist and requested the newspaper to help him find his relatives. He told Limpopo Mirror that his father, Mr Richard Mulaudzi, who was known in Cape Town as Richard Solomon, left Limpopo in 1952. “He met my mother, Dasi Landu, in the late 1960s,” Robert said in Xhosa. “I was born in 1974 and at that time my father still hadn’t visited home.” Mulaudzi only returned to Venda in the early 80s for a short visit, when he was informed that his father had passed away some years before. “From what my father told me, his mother had apparently passed away during the time of giving birth to him in 1936,” said Robert. He added that his father last visited Nzhelele in 2007. During this visit, he was given a warm welcome by one of the family members, called Mashudu, and even met his two elderly sisters. “My father and his sisters took family photos together with the children and family friends at Mashudu’s place,” said Robert. “Unfortunately, we have misplaced the photos.” Robert’s greatest need is to find and know the family and relatives of his father, and he has provided the Limpopo Mirror with his father’s pictures in the hope that relatives might notice the pictures and recognise his old man. “I haven’t met my paternal aunts and cousins, but I feel a deep love for them inside me,” he said. “Mashudu could possibly help me find my people as he used to communicate with my father telephonically on a regular basis. Sihadi’s friend rushed to the Sihadi family home a few streets away to alert them. “When we got to my sister’s stand, we found the shack burning and many people gathering around the place,” said Sihadi’s older brother, Vhutshilo Sihadi (29). “We suspect that a candle might have started the fire. There were things like a paraffin primus stove inside the shack, so you can imagine how difficult it was for my brother to put out the fire once it had started spreading through the house.” The walls of the shack were also covered with a thick plastic sheet to keep the cold weather and insects away. The deceased’s sister, Ms Avhatakali Sihadi, works outside the Elim area and was away when the incident took place. All her clothes, her ID book, food and other related stuff were consumed by the fire. “My five-year-old son and I are left with no clothes, apart from what is covering our flesh now,” she said. Decent house for indigent elderly couple Dzata Secondary is “a beacon of hope” A 59-year-old man and his 55-year-old visually-impaired wife will soon have a decent house. Mr Johannes Lishivha and Ms Josephina Mavhiana are very happy after Pastor Mlungusi Malungani pledged to build them a four-room house at Madodonga village in the Sinthumule area. The elderly couple have been living in an unstable mud roundavel and have been without access to electricity while all their neighbours have had electricity from around 1996. So far, building material has been delivered to the beneficiaries’ home. “We are very happy about the house which the man of God and his people are building for us,” said Lishivha. “This roundavel leaks when it rains and it is not safe for us to live in it. But we have been living in it because we can’t af-

ford to build ourselves a house.” The couple survives on disability grant which Josephina gets each month. A pastor at Don’t Blame God Ministries at N’wamitwa near Tzaneen, Malungani called on all the people of Limpopo to start taking part in the war against poverty and “to start restoring the dignity which the needy deserve in communities,” Malungani said. A member of the congregation who was busy with an electricity surveillance project noticed the couple’s living conditions and informed the pastor about their heartbreaking living conditions when he got back home. “After viewing pictures of the elderly couple’s home, I was deeply moved and decided to have a house built for them,” said Malungani. “Our plan is to have this house

completed by the third week of February.” The Thohoyandou Management Area of the Department of Correctional Services will provide building services. “Once the pastor and the local coordinators have finished organising all the material, we will deploy a team of parolees to build that house in a few days,” said the head of community corrections, Mr Farisani Mulaudzi. Cllr Masindi Rasimpi (Ward 25) praised Malungani for the kind of love he is showing to a needy family. “It is not a common act for people to contribute to the upliftment of the living conditions for people who are not part of their direct community,” she said. “Pastor Malungani is a man who has been sent by God to help the family that has been without proper shelter for a long time.”

During the announcement of the matric results, the achievements of pupils are always recognised, but teachers’ efforts are seldom applauded. This influenced the school governing body (SGB) of Dzata Secondary School to recognise teachers for their good work. Dzata, which is in Vhutuwangadzebu village at Nzhelele, achieved a 91.86% pass rate in last year’s matric results. The school’s SGB, motivated by the pass rate, recognised the need to motivate the teachers to continue working hard.

Last Friday (31 January) dedicated teachers who produced good results received awards. “We want to motivate our teachers to maintain the standard of education in our school,” said the SGB secretary, Mr Samuel Maduwa. “Through their efforts, the teachers have initiated evening studies and they also monitor those studies from time to time,” he said. He added that when the teachers and principal stood together and worked as a team it was possible to acquire a 100% pass rate. “Next year we are going

to increase the value of these awards. They will not only be certificates and trophies but money also,” he said. Nzhelele East circuit manager Mr David Ramutsheli applauded the school’s team. He said Dzata was a beacon of hope in their circuit. “At other schools we would be rebuking teachers and principals for incompetence, but here it is different,” he said. The school’s principal, Mrs Bridget Sinyosi, said this initiative would ensure that teachers were keeping the high pass rate of the school.

Plea to save boy from strange disease Young Konanani Evans Mutwanamba is in desperate need of a cure for his rare skin disease. Mutwanamba (10), of Mulodi village outside Thohoyandou, has been suffering from the skin disease since he was born. "When my child was born at the Tshilamba Health Centre, his skin was very shiny. From there the skin started cracking all over his body," says Mutwanamba's mother, Ms Tambudzani Makhesha.

She says her son struggles to cope during hot days. "When it is hot, his skin oozes blood. Most of the time he cries from unbearable pain. During summer, I sleep with a bucket full of water, so that I can put him in to cool his body whenever he starts crying. I normally do not enjoy summer because of this torture my son goes though. It is better when it is raining or during winter as he is able to sleep peacefully," says Makhesha. Mr Mmbangiseni Nemulodi,

deputy principal at Bashasha Primary School where Mutwanamba is in Grade 2, says he decided to contact the media after learning about the family's frustration from a teacher. "When this child came to this school two years ago, other children refused to play with him. During breaks, other learners would surround him while making fun of his condition. This brave young man was never concerned and today he is well accepted by other pupils, who also play with him," says Nemulodi. Makhesha and her husband, Mr Elvis Mutwanamba, are both unemployed and have already tried to get a cure for their son from doctors, traditional healers and churches, but with no solution. The couple is also blessed with other children with normal skins. Venetia mine assists local education A large number of stationery packs was given to teachers and administrators of four Musina schools as part of an educational road show conducted by senior managers of Venetia Mine at the commencement of the 2014 academic calendar.

Care and respect, paired with the importance of hard work and discipline, were the most prominent themes relayed to more than 3 000 pupils by 11 members of the mine’s top management, who visited Messina and Gateway Primary school and Eric Louw and Musina High School. EME BEE Certificate fraud on the rise What is an EME B-BBEE Certificate A BEE-rating Certificate is a document that indicates the level to which a company is BEE Compliance. An Exempt Micro Enterprise (EME) is any enterprise with an annual turnover of less than R5 million or an enterprise that was registered in the last 12 months. EME’s are automatically BEE compliant and will get either a Level 4 if it is more than 50% white-owned. A company owned by non-south African citizens will also get a level 4. Entities that are more than 50% black-owned will get a Level 3 and a procurement recognition of 110% According to the respective Charter Codes, entities in tourism will only qualify as EME’s if their turnover is below R2.5 million while construction sector entities need to be trading under R1.5 mil. Failure to provide a valid and authentic BEE Certificate could lead to disqualification. Who is authorised to issue a BEE Certificate? Over the recent months BEE Fraud has gone significantly higher with consumers made to pay high prices for certificates that are not even authentic. Our

investigations have led us to various individuals at different locations within the country, the most rampant source being the DTI campus in Pretoria where these fraudsters sit at internet café’s nearby issuing faked certificates to clients visiting the campus. Some consumers pay knowingly because they are misinformed about how much a valid certificate costs, when the fraudsters actually charge more than valid accreditation agencies and auditors. Others are made to pay without knowing that the certificate is actually fake. This has serious consequences as the company can be disqualified from a bid because of the fraudulent certificate and also costs the client more as they will still need to rectify the situation and get a new valid certificate. Fraudulent certificates come to our attention in many ways, the most common being when a government official calls us to verify a certificate or at the end of the one year period when the certificate expires and the client comes directly to us to renew it. In terms of the B-BBEE Act, an EME can when requested submit a certificate issued by either one of the following registered auditor – must be registered with the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA) accounting officer – must be a member of a recognised professional body such us SAIC, SAIPA or SAIBA SANAS accredited verification agency How much should I expect to pay? Surprise victory for Giyani Hotspurs Giyani Hotspurs deposited full points into their league account when they beat the well-respected Phungo All Stars 2-1 in a Safa Second Division clash that was decided at the Makhado (Louis Trichardt) Rugby Stadium on Saturday. Spurs were strong at the far back and in the striking force departments, but they lacked cohesion in the middle of the park. The balls that threatened the defence of Stars were mostly ballooned from behind. The visiting team enjoyed more ball possession, but their promising moves were foiled by the good defence of Stars. The teams were evenly matched throughout the first half. Stars

kept on cooling down the ball in the middle of the park, thus giving their opponents no chance to do as they pleased. Akane Banda of Spurs was the first player to taste success when he scored from a free kick. This followed after Stars’ defender, Lloyd Davhana, pulled Vongani Bvuma at the back and the referee awarded a free kick. Their celebration was cut short when Stars equalised via Justice Rasebotsa. The half-time score was 1-1. In the second half, both sides tried new options by using all their substitutes. The centre back of Spurs, Nhleko Ntlemo, went into the referee’s bookafter a dangerous tackle on Hulisani Mathugana. Stars were unlucky not to

Leopards refuse to surrender

Black Leopards controlled their latest game from the onset to the bitter end, but eventually they shared the spoils with Roses United. The National First Division League match at the Makhuvha Stadium last Saturday ended in a 1-1 draw. Lidoda Duvha’s new signee, Rendani Ndou, was in the team’s starting lineup. He formed a deadly combination with David Zulu at the forefront, but it was difficult for them to find the net. Leopards missed a fortune in the eighth minute. Their central midfielder, Meshack Maphangule, hesitated for far too long to unleash after receiving a beautiful pass

from Mumuni Abubakar. He eventually lost possession of the ball. A breakdown in communication between the Leopards’ keeper, Dino Visser, and his defenders gave birth to Roses’ goal in the 24th minute. Visser misjudged the flight of the ball and ultimately suffered the pain of watching the ball going beyond his reach. The home side continued to control proceedings but it remained difficult for them to find their way through Roses’ defence until the teams adjourned for half time. Harry Nyirenda, the Leopards’ Malawian international, was reprimanded with a card for handling the ball inten-

tionally early in the second half. Realizing that Meshack Maphangule’s original fighting spirit was fading with time, they replaced him with Bafana Sibeko in the 57th minute. Black Leopards used their remaining two substitution chances by introducing Ivan Mahangwahaya and Karabo Tsepe for Jabulanai Ndebele and Leonard Ntshangase respectively. Leopards’ equalizer came in the referee’s optional time. Mahangwahaya was brought down within the box and the referee, Mr Thando Ndzandeka, award a penalty to the home side. David Zulu converted from the white spot.
