Vir die eerste keer in bykans twee jaar kan Louis Trichardt sakeman mnr. Danie Pita (47) weer rustig slaap, nadat die Nasionale Vervolgingsgesag (NVG) besluit het om hom nie verder te vervolg nie. Die saak teen Pita spruit uit ‘n voorval op 31 Augustus 2017 toe hy deur lede van die Valke by sy sakeperseel in Kortstraat gearresteer is, nadat militêre plofstof en ammunisie op die perseel gevind is. Die voorval het die nasionale nuus gemaak. Die Valke het destyds beweer dat hulle op ‘n wenk gereageer het. Pita is eers ses dae ná sy arrestasie op 5 September vrygelaat op borg van R5 000. Buiten die klag van die onwettige besit van plofstof en ‘n klag van die onwettige besit van ammunisie, is daar ook ‘n klag van die besit van ‘n onwettige vuurwapen teen Pita gebring. Laasgenoemde klag moes egter ná die tyd teruggetrek word, omdat die Valke nooit op enige vuurwapens beslag gelê het nie. Ná herhaalde hofverskynings is alle klagte teen Pita op 14 Junie verlede jaar in die distrikshof op Louis Trichardt voorlopig teruggetrek, hangende ‘n finale beslissing oor verdere vervolging deur die direkteur van die NVG. In ‘n skrywe aan sy regspan sê die NVG dat, gegewe die polisie se bewyse in die saak, daar geen kans is dat Pita suksesvol verhoor kan word nie. “Dit was maar ‘n storie ... gelukkig is dit nou klaar,” het Pita Dinsdag aan die Zoutpansberger gesê. Hy was verheug oor die beslissing. Pita se vreugde is egter gering, gemeet aan die hel waardeur hy en sy familie die afgelope twee jaar moes gaan. Dit het vir hulle geweldige trauma

veroorsaak. Sedert die oggend van sy arrestasie tot en met sy vrylating op borg ses dae later is Pita nie toegelaat om met enige iemand te kommunikeer nie. “Daar was ‘n groot trauma. Dit was maar ‘n traumatiese storie vir almal gewees … Ons was 64 in ‘n sel gewees wat net 34 beddens het. Ek was die enigste blanke in die sel gewees vir daardie hele tydperk … Jy het nie regtig geslaap nie, want jy was te bang om jou oë toe te maak. Jy het nie geweet wat gaan gebeur nie en of jy regtig ooit weer daar gaan uitkom nie,” het Pita gesê. Die polisie het deurlopend aangedui dat hulle ‘n goeie saak teen Pita het. Messina Primary has launched a clean-up project by making eco-bricks. These bricks are made by stuffing empty 2-litre bottles with soft waste plastic. Stuffing the bottle properly means that, when pressed, it will not make a sound and will weigh 400g minimum. These ‘bricks’ will eventually be used to build with. Every learner who hands in 10 eco-bricks of the right standard will be awarded a recycling badge. A prize will also be given for handing in the most bricks before the end of the year. Fourteen people were killed and many injured in a bus accident on the N1 in the Soutpansberg on Monday night. The bus, ferrying Zimbabweans from Pretoria back home, overturned near the Ingwe Hotel in the umpteenth accident on this road. Several passengers died instantly. The injured passengers were taken to Elim, Siloam and Louis Trichardt Memorial hospital, while those who were critically injured were transferred to the provincial hospital in Polokwane. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. News of the accident spread like wildfire. Within a short space of time, a huge number of vehicles were parked for kilometres, with people scrambling to have a glimpse of the accident scene. According to an eyewitness, “the broken bodies were scattered all over the road. Scores of bewildered community members looked on in disbelief as the badly mutilated bodies were loaded into the hearses”. A survivor of the crash, Ms Juliet Mpandawana,

said the accident could possibly have been the result of driver’s fatigue. “We were supposed to leave Pretoria on Sunday for Zimbabwe, but that was not the case. We had to spend the whole night waiting for the bus till Monday morning. The bus arrived around 05:00 on Monday. The drivers did not rest. We loaded our goods and off we left for Zimbabwe. As we were not happy going back with the same drivers, we insisted on being refunded, but that fell on death ears,” said Mpandawana. She blames the driver for speeding, the overloading of goods and driver fatigue. The mayor of the Makhado Local Municipality, Cllr Samuel Munyai, was shocked to hear about the accident. He sent his condolences to the families, friends and co-workers of the deceased. The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Makoma Makhurupetje, also expressed shock over the accident. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased during this time of grief, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured ones. The department shares the heartache and is saddened that so many lives continue to be lost on South African roads, which not only impacts negatively on their families but on the province and the country in general,’’ said Makhurupetje. Makhurupetje called on bus drivers to take a rest and check on the roadworthiness of long-distance buses to avoid the loss of lives. “We are deeply concerned about accidents involving buses as they lead to more loss of lives, compared to ordinary motor vehicles. The drivers and vehicle fitness of long-distance cross-border buses is also a matter of deep concern to us.” He added that the time had come for law-enforcement officers to step up their routine checks on these buses to prevent this kind of accident from happening. “I also call upon drivers of buses and other public transport to take rest in between trips as the lives of passengers remain in their hands,” said the MEC. The police confirmed that they had opened a culpable homicide docket and at the time of our going to press they were still waiting for families to come and identify the bodies.

Ek is ... die Weg, die Waarheid en die lewe Persoonlike Skrifstudie en huisgodsdiens Lees: 2 Timoteus 3:14-17

oekom is persoonlike Skrifstudie en huisgodsdiens belangrik? Die Woord moet gereeld gelees en bestudeer word om ons kennis van die Skrif — wat so noodsaaklik is (Joh. 17:3) — te vermeerder. Deur die lees en bestudering van die Woord bring die Heilige Gees geloof in ons tot stand en versterk Hy bestaande geloof (daar kan gekyk word na die volgende tekste: Rom. 10:17; 1 Pet 1:25-26; 1 Pet 2:2). Kennis van die Skrif baan die weg tot verlossing en die ewige saligheid. 2 Timoteus 3:15: “... en dat jy van kleins af die heilige Skrifte ken wat jou wys kan maak tot saligheid deur die geloof in Christus Jesus.” In Openbaring 1:3 lees ons ook: “Salig is hy wat die woorde van die profesie lees, en die wat dit hoor en bewaar wat daarin geskrywe is, want die tyd is naby.” Hoe meer ons die Bybel bestudeer, hoe beter sal ons God ken en weet wat sy wil ook in moeilike situasies is. Dan sal ons ook groei in die geloof, sodat dit nie meer nodig sal wees dat ons soos kinders in die geloof met die Woord van God in die vorm van melk (slegs dit wat maklik is om te verstaan) gevoed moet word nie, maar sal ons soos mense wat geestelik volwasse is met die Woord van God in die vorm van vaste kos (sake wat moeiliker is om te verstaan maar van groot betekenis is) gevoed word. Hebreërs 5:13-14 en Heb. 6:1: “Want elkeen wat melk gebruik, is onervare in die woord van geregtigheid, omdat hy ‘n kind is. Maar vaste spys is vir volwassenes, vir die wat geestesvermoëns besit deur die gewoonte geoefen, om goed van kwaad te onderskei. Daarom moet ons nie bly by die begin van die prediking aangaande Christus nie, maar na die volmaaktheid voortgaan sonder om weer die fondament te lê van die bekering uit dooie werke en van die geloof in God.” Volgens die eis van God moet ouers hul kinders onderrig om die Here deur sy Woord te ken. Deuteronomium 6:6-7: “En hierdie woorde wat ek jou vandag beveel, moet in jou hart wees; en jy moet dit jou kinders inskerp en daaroor spreek as jy in jou huis sit en as jy op pad is en as jy gaan lê en as jy opstaan”. Lees die Bybel so: Gereeld: Daar moet vaste tye wees waarop jy daagliks jou Bybel lees. Sistematies: Jy moet die Bybel nie net lees waar dit oopval nie, maar jy moet dit so lees dat jy kennis kry van al die Bybelboeke en derhalwe van die hele Bybel. Biddend: Jy moet voor jy die Bybel lees die Here vra om deur sy Gees sy Woord vir jou te open sodat jy dit reg kan verstaan en kan onthou wat jy gelees het. Nadenkend: Jy moet, nadat jy ‘n bepaalde gedeelte gelees het, voordat jy die Bybel toemaak, eers nadink wat die Here in die betrokke gedeelte aan jou sê, watter boodskap daaruit tot jou kom. Borskanker is in 2017 by haar gediagnoseer, en nadat sy ‘n mastektomie en behandeling ontvang het, het dit vir ‘n goeie 18 maande baie goed gegaan met haar. In Desember 2018 is lewerkanker by haar gediagnoseer. Sy het chemoterapie ondergaan, maar het na vyf behandelings baie swak geword en is telkens in die hospitaal opgeneem, waar sy oorlede is. Linette is op 14 April 1950 in die destydse ou SAVF Kraaminrigting (vandag die Zoutpansberg Privaathospitaal) in Louis Trichardt gebore, die eerste van oorlede Piet en Marietjie De Vaal se vyf dogters. Sy het haar Pa se talent as skilder van die bosveld-natuurtonele en kremetartbome geërf, en was ‘n kunstenaar in haar eie reg. Sy het in 1967 aan die Hoërskool Louis Trichardt gematrikuleer, en was ook ‘n lid van die leerlingraad. Hier sou sy ook baie jare later vir ongeveer 20 jaar as huishoudkunde-onderwyseres onderrig gee. Sy het haar aan die destydse Pretoriase Tegniese Kollege (vandag die Technikon) as huishoudkundeonderwyseres bekwaam. Linette sal vir die inwoners van haar geboortedorp onthou word om ‘n hele paar redes. Haar minsame en onkreukbare geaardheid het haar by soveel mense geliefd en bemind gemaak. Dit blyk uit die liefdevolle bystand wat sy in haar laaste maande van soveel vriende en vriendinne ontvang het. Sy het sanglesse, kunsklasse en musieklesse gegee, en menige

groepe mense. Haar hande het vir niks verkeerd gestaan nie! Sy was altyd vriendelik, stil, statig en afgerond. Sy het die manier gehad om mense na haar toe aan te trek met haar onopgesmukte opregtheid. Nadat sy getroud is en ‘n draai gemaak het in onder meer Kroonstad en Pretoria, het die gesin hulle vir ‘n paar jaar op Mara Navorsingstasie gevestig. Hierna het hulle Louis Trichardt toe verhuis, waar sy ‘n pragtige huis in Schimpersingel gebou het. Ook hier het haar kreatiwiteit geseëvier. Hiervandaan is hulle vir ‘n paar voorspoedige jare Kimberley toe, maar ‘n groot ongeluk waarin die hele gesin betrokke was het die gesin se noodlot laat draai, en het sy haar weer in Louis Trichardt gevestig. Sy het vir baie jare ná haar moeder Marietjie se afsterwe alleen na haar bejaarde vader omgesien. Sy het ook as baie bekwame onderwyseres diens gedoen by onder meer Laerskool Soutpansberg asook by Ridgeway Independent. By CVO Zoutpansberg het sy haar laaste posisie beklee, tot en met Maart 2018. Ten spyte van haar opleiding as huishoudkundige, het sy van Bybelkunde, geskiedenis, kuns en tale, tot wetenskap en wiskunde gedoseer. Daar kan met reg gesê word dat sy ‘n baie groot rol gespeel het in die vorming van menige volwaardige toekomstige landsburger. Wat egter uitstaan, is haar liefde vir kinders en hulle liefde en respek vir haar. Sy kon dissipline met groot deernis toepas. Linette het ‘n lewendige belangstelling in die omgewing se geskiedenis en erfenis gehad en was ‘n aktiewe lid van die plaaslike Erfeniskomitee. Sy het ‘n paar jaar

the local Muslim community. A number of members from the Christian churches attended the event and made use of the opportunity to ask questions. Right from the start it was made clear that the session is not meant to convert anyone or argue as to which religion is the true religion. Mr Aboobaker Aslam opened the information session by explaining the various religious rituals, such as the prayer sessions and the significance of the lay-out of the mosque. He also answered questions, some of which are very controversial. Aslam responded to a question as to the role of women in Islam, saying that there was no discrimination on the basis of gender. He explained that various cultural influences found its way into the

manner in which the religion was practiced. This caused different norms, determining for example where women sat when praying in the mosque. One of the guests asked why there were no mosques in Vhembe’s rural areas. He said that the Christian churches had been active in the villages for decades, but one would hardly find anyone propagating Islam in these areas. Mr Mahomed Khan, the liaison officer for the Islamic Propagation Centre International, was also present at the event. He answered that the Islam church representatives had been prohibited from reaching out to these communities for more than a century. Only with the dawn of a new democracy had these areas become more accessible to them.

The Masjid-Al-Noor mosque in Eltivillas held an open day on 27 April and invited residents from all church denominations to visit the mosque to find out more about the Islam traditions and beliefs. The gesture to have an open day at the mosque was seen by many as a wonderful initiative to ensure that international events do not mar the peaceful co-existence of different religions in the Soutpansberg region. The town, Louis Trichardt, has a unique legacy where religions such as Christianity, Islam and Hinduism have operated next to each other for over a century. In March this year, shootings broke out in Christchurch, New Zealand, when an attack on two mosques left 51 people dead and 49 injured. A few weeks later, on Easter Sunday, suicide bombers killed at least 253 people and injured some 500 at churches and top-end hotels across Sri Lanka. Unlike so many other towns and cities in the world, where religious intolerance is almost a norm, Louis Trichardt has a long legacy of relative harmony. The local religious leaders may disagree as to the various doctrines, but violence and aggression are rare occurrences. Die stygende brandstofpryse bring meer as een kopseer. Hoe gemaak as jy die pompjoggie vra om “vol te maak” en ewe skielik kom jy agter die bedrag op die pomp verskuldig is aansienlik meer as wat jy in jou beursie het? Die jongste styging in brandstofpryse was weer ‘n gevoelige slag vir verbruikers. In Limpopo is die prys van petrol (93 oktaan) reeds R16,48 per liter. Dit beteken ‘n middelslag motor met ‘n brand stoftenk van net meer as 60 liter kan jou los met ‘n rekening van meer as R1 000 en dalk ‘n rooi gesig. Volgens twee plaaslike eienaars van motorha wens gebeur dit nie gereeld dat motoriste met ‘n plat beursie kom verduidelik nie. As dit wel gebeur, word dit taktvol hanteer. In bykans al die gevalle was daar ‘n geldige rede en verduideliking vir die insident. Die Zoutpansberger het met me. André Gilfillan en mnr. John le Cornu gaan gesels om te hoor hoe hulle dié probleme op hul rybane hanteer. Gilfillan bestuur al vir dekades lank Bridge Auto se rybaan, terwyl Le Cornu die rybaan by Mount Fuji Motors help bestuur. Albei van hulle sê dat gevalle waar motoriste wegry sonder om vir brandstof te betaal, glad nie algemeen voorkom op Louis Trichardt nie. Dit is te verstane dat daar ‘n groter risiko is vir so iets om te gebeur in die middernagtelike ure, sê Gilfillan. Sy voeg by dat die rybaanbestuurders ook in die nagtelike ure sal probeer seker maak dat meer as een petroljoggie ‘n motoris bedien, ter wille van die veiligheid van die joggies. ‘n Probleem wat sporadies kop uitsteek, is vervalste note wat gebruik word om te betaal vir brandstof. Die pompjoggies word sover moontlik

opgelei om vals note te herken. Dit is egter nie altyd so maklik nie en die booswigte probeer hul bes om die pompjoggies met groot fooitjies om te koop om die geld te aanvaar, sê Le Cornu. Tegnologie veroorsaak egter ook probleme vir pompjoggies en rybaanbestuurders. Die joggies is veronderstel om eers seker te maak of daar voldoende fondse beskikbaar is voor brandstof ingegooi word, maar dit is nie altyd moontlik nie. Dit gebeur ook dat sekere banke se stelsels by tye nie beskikbaar is nie, wat vertragings veroorsaak. Le Cornu en Gilfillan sê dat die motorhawens gewoonlik meer as een bank se stelsel gebruik, wat die risiko verminder dat hul klante se transaksies nie elektronies gedoen kan word nie. Wanneer dit onmoontlik is om ‘n transaksie te doen, word die klant se besonderhede neergeskryf en later word dan opgevolg om die betaling te kry. Op plekke soos Louis Trichardt ken die pompjoggies dikwels hul klante en gebeur dit bykans nooit dat ‘n motoris net verdwyn sonder betaling nie. Die meeste van die motorhawens spog ook met sekuriteitskameras en ander moniteringstoerusting, wat bydrae tot ‘n veiliger omgewing vir kliënte en personeel. Dit gebeur soms dat motoriste die petroljoggies blameer dat hulle “te veel” brandstof sou ingooi. Beide Gilfillan en Le Cornu is dit eens dat daar behoorlike kommunikasie tussen die kliënt en die pompjoggie moet wees. “Daar rus ‘n onus op die motoris om toesig te hou oor die proses en te sorg dat alles reg verloop,” sê Gilfillan. Sy beklemtoon dat joggies streng opgelei en voortdurende geëvalueer word. Tegnologie maak dit ook makliker met pompe wat vooraf gestel kan word om presies die regte hoeveelheid brandstof in te gooi.

World Book Day celebrated with a scavenger hunt School News

Ridgeway College in Louis Tri chardt recently celebrated World Book Day (23 April) with a weeklong Book Day-themed scavenger hunt, a special assembly and a schoolwide read-a-thon. The scavenger hunt required students to decode clues that would lead them to a book, which they had to search for in the school library. The hunt was won by Marco Marcos and Gordon MacGaffin. The special assembly celebrated Ridgeway College student Alex Fourie decodes the clues that would lead the writing of some of their students, the origin of books and how the world him to a book. Ridgeway Preparatory School hosts invitational netball and soccer day The Ridgeway Preparatory School outside Louis Trichardt, formerly known as Ridgeway Independent, hosted a netball and soccer invitational day on Saturday, 4 May. Schools participating included Pepps Preparatory School in Polokwane, Braambos Primary School, Levubu Laerskool, Laerskool Louis Trichardt (Triegies), Emmanuel Christian School and, of course, Ridgeway. As for netball, the U/9 category was won by Triegies A with Triegies B second and Ridgeway third. In the U/10 category, Ridgeway was first, Levubu second and Triegies third. In the U/11 category, top honours went to Pepps, with Ridgeway second and Triegies third. Pepps also won the U/12 category, with Ridgeway second and Levubu third. Die span van Limpopo Melkery het Sondag die finaal van die Louis Trichardt Krieketklub se eerste liga vir die jaar gewen. Hulle het die Vikings in ‘n spannende wedstryd met twee paaltjies geklop. Vikings het eerste gaan kolf en Craig Viljoen (73 van 46 balle) het ‘n stewige fondasie gelê vir hul beurt. Warno Smit (62 van slegs 33 balle) het hom goed ondersteun en Leon Furstenburg (11) het aan die einde ook ‘n bydrae gelewer. Nadat 20 beurte

voltooi is, het Vikings se telling op 183 vir die verlies van vier paaltjies gestaan. Geen van Limpopo se boulers kon meer as een paaltjie inoes nie, maar die twee Fourie-broers was baie ekonomies. Gerhardus Fourie se syfers was 0/23 in vier beurte, terwyl AJ Fourie met 1/25 na vier geëindig het. Dewald Joubert (66 van net 26 balle) en Chris-Jan Hendriks (21 van 16 balle) het Limpopo se beurt geopen en die telling na 79 geneem voor die eerste paaltjie platgetrek is. Leon Olwage (13 van 18 balle) en Gerhardus

Para-athlete Sheryl James from Louis Trichardt recently returned from Sao Paulo, Brazil, with two gold medals and a bronze. Sheryl participated in the Loterias Caixa Athletics Grand Prix in Sao Paulo from 25 to 27 April and was the only South African among 600 international athletes from 15 countries. She ran in the100m and 200m sprints, racing to personal bests and winning gold in both. Her time for the 100m (13.78 s) bettered the South African and African records. Her time for

the 200m (28.41 s) bettered the African, South African records too. As a result of her good results, Sheryl also qualified for a Super 8 final, which draws athletes from all categories of disability together, and here she achieved a bronze medal. The vibe at the event was incredible and the Brazilian people are warm and accommodating. When asked how she got into this amazing journey, Sheryl herself is astonished and explains that the journey is sometimes overwhelming, but God is the God of the impossible and one can expect to be surprised when the Lord Jesus strengthens and moves one in a direction.
