Project brings new hope

The business fraternity in the Eltivillas complex finally has reason to celebrate again after work has started to completely resurface both parking areas at the complex this past week. For years, little to no maintenance of the parking areas took place, prompting many customers to take their business elsewhere rather than trying to navigate the gauntlet of potholes in front of shops.

The tender for the resurfacing of both parking areas at the Eltivillas complex was advertised by the Makhado Municipality under tender number 74 of 2021 and was awarded to SMA Business Enterprise (Pty) Ltd. The company sent notices to all business owners at the complex at the beginning of October, informing them of the proposed resurfacing project, which started on 12 October and is scheduled to be completed by

30 November. “We will work quickly to avoid disturbance,” the notice concluded.

The contractor delivered on the promise to work quickly. The first two weeks of the project consisted of planning and fixing the existing sidewalks and damaged storm-water drainage pits in preparation of the total resurfacing process, which started last week.

“I must tell you this. The contractor is a hands-on guy. If we can get a guy like this to work throughout town, our roads will look totally different. He started work last week Thursday and is pretty much done with our whole complex. This is even despite two days of intermittent rain,” remarked one Eltivillas resident on Tuesday.

“This [the resurfacing of the parking area] is being done for the very first time in 42 years,” said businessman Hitesh Dave of Dave Brothers. (Contd on P2)

For the first time in 42 years, ever since Louis Trichardt’s Indian community was moved to Eltivillas in accordance with the former apartheid government’s Group Areas Act of 1950, the parking area at the Eltivillas shopping complex is being completely resurfaced. No longer do clients have to navigate the gauntlet of potholes to visit their favourite shops. Photo supplied.
“Basically, what they did is what you call a milling process. The machine comes in and it digs up all the tar from the top. They then test the original base. If the base is fine, they then just resurface it. It is not a very difficult process, but the contractor obviously knows what he is doing,” said businessman Hitesh Dave.

Can you identify these suspects?

Crime prevention

A reward of R10 000 is still being offered to anyone with information that will lead to the arrest and successful conviction of those responsible for the current spate of water-meter thefts in Louis Trichardt, the likes of which have never been seen before.

Over the last two or three months, an esti mated 1 000 meters have been stolen outside homes and businesses in Louis Trichardt, sometimes three or four a night. The lure is that these meters are brass meters that fetch a pretty penny on the scrap-metal market.

On 2 November, a resident did manage to capture three of the thieves on his home-secu rity camera. On the video, one can clearly see three men working together. The men are seen walking on both sides of the street, presumably scouting for water meters. A third man follows

behind, carrying a big bag. The bag is obvious ly used to hide the stolen water meter quickly after it has been broken off. In the video, the man can also be scene darting into some gar den bushes, where he breaks off another water meter within seconds.

The accompanying photos are screenshots taken from the video of the suspects. The one man has a distinctive white stripe through his hair.

People who have information about the three men or other possible suspects can phone Lt-Col Ronald Tinyani at the Makhado SAPS at Tel 076 813 0378.

Alternatively, members of the public can also phone Renier Fourie (chairman of the Vhembe Rural Safety Committee/ VRSC) at Tel 083 281 0378 or the vice-chairman of the VRSC, Mr Wouter Meintjes, at Tel 083 228 9359.

Singer Thapelo makes it to grand finale of Idols SA

Thapelo Molomo from Tho hoyandou Block F is proving to be a man of great talent. To begin with, he can sing very well. So well, in fact, that he just made it to the top 2 on South Africa’s biggest talent-search competition, Idols SA

On Sunday (13 November), the whole of Vhembe and view ers from across the country will be glued to their TV screens when Molomo and Nozipho Sibiya battle it out at season 18’s final show down for the winning spot. The sing-off takes place at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria.

Molomo (29) is not just a wonderful singer. On completing his matric, he went on to study psychology at the University of Venda (Univen). He started working as a trauma councillor at the Brits SAPS last year.

The humble man said that making it to the final of Idols SA was by far the biggest compliment for him as he had always been in secure about his sing ing talent. “I still can not believe that I made it this far. But I saw my growth throughout this competition and that really means a lot to me. I am also very grateful for the support I have received since

the

started. I want to thank everyone,” he said.

The winner will walk away with just over R1 million in prize money, a Toyota Starlet, a fashion voucher and their liveshow outfits, all to the value

Resurfacing project long overdue

(Contd from P1)

He was referring to when the town’s Indian community was moved out of Louis Trichardt to Eltivillas in 1980, in accordance with the former apartheid government’s Group Areas Act of 1950.

“From a business perspective, we are very happy. This has been long overdue, and finally it is getting done,” said Dave.

Dave explained the process. “Basically, what they did is what you call a milling process. The machine comes in and it digs up all the tar from the top. They then test the original base. If the base is fine, they then just resurface it. It is not a very difficult process, but the contractor obvious ly knows what he is doing,” said Dave.

Dave said they as a community were very im pressed with the contractor. “We are in contact with the contractor. He is on site and he meets with us,” said Dave. This is in stark contrast to the frustration Eltivillas residents had to endure with the contractor appointed to rehabilitate Main Street. The contract ended up taking months to complete.

Regarding the current resurfacing project, however, Dave said that he did have one concern and that was that the newly resurfaced parking lot would end up being used as a bus and truck stop. “Maybe the municipality should place height indicators at the entrances. Buses and trucks have no business coming in here,” said Dave.

Mannie Moodley of BestDrive agreed with Dave regarding height indicators to keep buses and trucks out of the parking area. Apart from that, he also was excited about the project. “This is awesome, and we needed it. This has been long overdue, and for the long-term future I think it’s for the best. This is going to be the new ‘town’. You can see all the movement is on the Eltivillas side,” said Moodley. Over the last couple of years, more shops have closed down in Louis Trichardt’s CBD. The situation worsened

when numerous national chain stores and banks also opted to move over to the newly expanded Makhado Crossing shopping mall adjacent to Eltivillas.

For Bobby Rasool of Cycle Centre, the resur facing of the parking area brings a lot of hope. “I hope this and other new developments in Eltivillas, like the newly opened Chicken Licken, will bring new feet into the complex, as well as bring old feet back. Just the fact that there is ‘life’ means a lot to us,” said Rasool. As for the current roadworks taking place, Rasool said: “It is a bit of an inconvenience, but we don’t mind it at all. We are thankful.” He also had high praise for the swift and professional work being done by the contractor.

Hy was baie nou betrokke by tienertoneel vir ‘n hele aantal jare.

Nico is bedrywig.

Nico is passievol oor Donkerbos. “Baie, veral Afrikaanse produks ies, speel óf in die woestyn óf by die see af.

Dit gebeur as karakters soos regte mense word.

Ander dele is in Magoebaskloof geskiet.

Following complaints by Louis Trichardt residents about the mess left behind by the town’s “informal recyclers” on rubbish-removal days, the Makhado Municipality was asked if they had any formal agreements with these people. Although a lot off people do not have a problem with many of these street recyclers’ trying to earn a bit of money by scavenging recyclable material from people’s black rubbish bags on rubbish-removal days, the problem stems from those who leave a complete mess after ripping open the black bags. The residents of Laat Lente and Herfsakker are especially upset about having to clean the mess left behind by some of these recyclers on a weekly basis. Makhado municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi indicated on Tuesday that the municipality had no agreements or arrangement with these street recyclers. “In fact, what they are doing is quite illegal and we are going to issue a notice to them to discourage them from continuing to engage in such unauthorised process. We are appealing to them to cease and desist from such practice with immediate effect,” said Bobodi.

Hulp nodig om mediese koste te betaal

Hulpverlening

Piet Pretorius, terreinopsigter by Laerskool Louis Trichardt, se mediese koste.

Pretorius moes onlangs ‘n kolostomie ondergaan en dra sedertdien ‘n sakkie. Hy is nou

Masengane as stadstesourier in opleiding.

Hierdie is my passie, my hart, my droom,” sê Melanie.

As ‘n mens kan, moet jy ‘n oop hand hê.

“Ek doen my bes,” sê sy.

Bergcare kan gekontak word by Erasmusstraat 23, of by tel. 015 516 3902.

New senior managers take charge

Municipal News

To accelerate service delivery, Musina Municipality filled two vital senior management positions that had been vacant for years. Mss Priscilla Demana and Yolanda Sinclair were appointed general managers for community services and technical services respectively. Their five-year contracts started last Tuesday (1 November).

The position of general manager: community services became vacant when the incumbent, Mr Jakkie Du Toit,

retired in 2014, while the position of general manager: technical services was left vacant when Mr Richard Morolana’s contract expired three years ago. Different employees were acting on a rotational basis until Demana and Sinclair’s appointment.

When welcoming the two senior managers, Municipal Manager Nathi Tshiwanammbi said that their positions would help bridge the service-delivery gap created by the shortage of manpower. He said the municipality would function more effectively now because people

in these two departments could take direct responsibility.

Tshiwanammbi said the only senior management position that had not been filled yet was that of general manager: economic development and planning (EDP).

“It is worth celebrating to note that the new general manager for EDP will join us next month, on the 1st of December. This means that the top management team will be fully composed, and we will be able to deliver the much-needed basic services to our people,” he said.

More accessible public facilities needed for the disabled

IsAbility News

From 3 November tot 3 December each year, South Africans celebrate National Disability Rights Awareness month, and across the world, 3 December is celebrated as International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Sadly, one can ask the question why peo ple need special “awareness” months like these to highlight the struggles people with disabilities face daily.

This year’s theme in South Africa is: Empowering persons with disabilities through resourceful, sustainable and safe environments. “When ever there is a need to create ‘awareness’, one should ask oneself the question: Why are we not aware of this issue? Why should we need to be reminded about it?” says Ms Sandy James of the IsAbility Sports Club in Louis Trichardt. She goes on to explain. “A disability is often regarded as something that happens to someone else. And very often in our communities, people who live with any form of disability are ‘hidden away’ - or that may be our percep tion. In many instances, the latter could be true, but there is a very real, practical reason why we do not see people with disabilities moving freely in the public space. That reason

is the fact that we have very few disability-friendly or wheelchair-accessible public facilities,” says James.

Regarding her statement, James urges residents to ask themselves a simple question. “If we consider our own local town Louis Trichardt and surrounding rural villages, how many accessible public facilities have you come across? How many organisations that serve the public have accessible toilets and bathrooms?” James asks.

James says that a disability is often an impairment that one is born with, but even more often it comes as a result of an accident or unforeseen illness. This may happen at any time during one’s life - to anyone. “Until one has lived alongside someone with a disability, one can be blissfully unaware of the challenges faced. What a physically able person regards as perfectly normal is not so easy for someone with a phys ical challenge. For example, a parent attending his or her child’s sports event at school, or a child facing the sentence of being relegated to a ‘special school’ because there are no ac cessible facilities at mainstream schools, or even a mere shop ping excursion to a mall. Any of these occasions would create huge challenges for someone in

a wheelchair,” James says.

One of the aspects of the local IsAbility Sports Club’s vision and mission is to create awareness of opportunities for people with disabilities and develop those opportunities.

“We are enormously grateful for the amazing support our projects receive from our local community and wish to use this opportunity to thank all our volunteers, sponsors and members for their valued involvement and contributions. We are also indebted to some of our local schools, namely Emmanuel Christian School, Louis Trichardt High School and Louis Trichardt Primary School, for always being willing to make their facilities available to us for events and functions,” says James.

According to James, these schools are always willing to allow them to use their equipment and they go out of their way to make sure that they are assisted in every way possible. “To the principals, staff and governing bodies of these schools, a big THANK YOU! When we organise an event for a group of people with disabilities, where there are sometimes more than 20 who are in wheelchairs, ablution facilities are always a big issue. Here, again, we are indebted to Talisman and Laurie Banna

New principal for preparatory school

School News

Mr Melvin Govender was recently appoint ed as the new principal of the Preparatory

School at Ridgeway College, Louis Trichardt.

“I am excited and humbled by the privilege of leading Ridgeway Preparatory School. My goal is not only to create but also maintain excellence in the classroom, sports arenas, digital platforms and on stage,” said Govender.

Govender said that being at the forefront of innovation with the integration of hybrid teach ing models and the need to develop creativity and collaborative skills within the children was important. “Our parents must feel as if they are part of a larger family as the need for support and collective consciousness are critical now as we look to nurture relationships in a way that we have never needed to before. Irrespective of age, all children must be nurtured and the idea of learning being serious play must be brought to the fore,” Govender said.

Govender was the operational head princi pal at Curro Academy Soshanguve for the last two years. Before that, he was the phase head at Curro Edenvale, and prior to that, he was at Curro Serengeti. He is a published author of a children’s storybook and an accredited soccer referee.

Ridgeway Preparatory is currently building three extra classes, a new computer room, as well as a new admin block on campus. Appli cations for 2023 are still open and parents can apply online at www.ridgewaycollege.co.za.

tyne, who always goes out of his way to see that we are assisted with mobile toilets that are wheelchair accessible. These toilets have to be transport ed from Polokwane for each event,” James says.

Regarding her last remark, James feels that this brings her to a practical way that the community in Louis Trichardt could make a difference to peo ple living with disabilities - and it would impact the whole com munity. “If we can raise funds within our local community towards constructing suitable wheelchair-accessible toilets at some of our local schools, that would be the beginning of our own community’s embracing the needs of the physically vul nerable. This ‘Make our local public facilities an accessible and safe environment for peo ple with disabilities project’ is on the verge of being launched. Please watch this space for more information on how you, as a concerned and aware member of our community, can become involved!” James said.

On a positive note, Mr Theo Muller, Louis Trichardt High School’s principal, has already pledged support to the initia tive, saying that if the funds could be raised, they would gladly house these ablution fa cilities. As an aside, what is also important to remember is that these ablution facilities do not need to be built from scratch. They can also be made acces sible by making alterations to current buildings, such as expanding walls, changing

the handles of doors and taps, making ramps, etc.

This coming Saturday 12 November, the IsAbility Sports Club will be hosting their senior champs and provincial trials at Louis Trichardt High School’s grounds. “We are so excited, because our senior component has increased from five in 2019 to 63 athletes this coming Saturday - from across Limpopo. These are just seniors, as the juniors have already had their trials in

Tzaneen. We are also having our AGM after the event and would like to invite anyone who is interested in becoming involved or just seeing what is possible for a person with a disability, to come along. At our AGM, we always give feedback on the progress of our various projects too,” said James. The AGM is from 13:00 to 14:00, while the athletes will be participating from 08:00 until 12:30.

On Thursday, 3 November, the Louis Trichardt SPCA held their eighth annual SPCA auction. It truly was a night to be remembered once again, one of our best to date for sure! We were absolutely blown away by our community’s support and generosity once again, especially in a year that brought with it so many new challenges for everyone. We were overwhelmed and honestly left speechless with the support we got from ticket sales, spon sorship of prizes, people’s time and then also by everyone who bid on the amazing prizes as well! These two small words – THANK YOU – will never be enough!” says the SPCA team. Pictured are members of the Louis Trichardt SPCA with well-known South African actor and comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout, who was the guest artist the evening that took place at Northgate Lodge. From left to right are Antjie Brennan, Elize van der Goot, Schalk Bezuid enhout, Lesley Gaigher, Anel Heinlein, Andel Roets and Alicia Thomas. Photo supplied.

Slegs hoë-resolusie digitale

foto’s (verkieslik landskap-formaat) sal aanvaar word. I am ... the Way, the Truth and the Life

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33.

To seek something requires effort. It is like the woman who lost a coin and swept the whole house to find it (Luke 15:810).

A non–believer does not seek God or his kingdom. Romans 3:11. “There is no one who seeks after God.” The unbeliever never seeks God, he is a fugitive from God. Jesus came to seek and to save the lost (Luke 19:10).

Unsaved people may look for answers to life’s puzzles, but do not seek God. They are seeking happiness, peace of mind, relief from guilt, a meaningful life, and a lot of other things we know only God can give them. They are seeking the benefits of God, without God Himself.

The seeking of God begins at conversion. To seek God is a lifelong pursuit.

Matthew 6:10. “Your kingdom come; Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” We are called to seek the kingdom by bearing witness to the kingdom. We are to seek to show the world what the kingdom of God looks like. The kingdom comes on earth where God’s will is done on earth.

The great goal of the Christian life is obedience to the King. He is pleased when his children obey.

Next young SA squash champion may come from rural Limpopo

The next South African squash champion may very well come from rural Limpopo if the plans of the local administrators of the sport materialise. This vision is also not unrealistic, judging by the talent unearthed by the recently launched development programme.

On Saturday, 22 October, Limpopo Squash hosted the first Growthpoint Superstars squash event in Polokwane. The event was attended by 80 junior squash players, most of whom were introduced to squash for the first time. It formed part of the Limpopo Junior Squash (LJS) development programme.

During the event, hosted by the Polokwane Squash Club, the young players received coaching from experienced players, which included sever-

al provincial champions. One of the coaches, Erik Welman, was very impressed with the skills displayed by some of the young players.

“This kid, Harry, moves like a well-seasoned athlete, and if we give him some special attention, he will potentially be the provincial champion before he graduates from school,” said Erik. His excitement was shared by the chairperson of Limpopo Squash, Michael Ward. “If this momentum and growth continue, Limpopo Squash will produce future national champions sooner rather than later,” he said.

The development programme is already underway at the Soutpansberg Squash Club in Louis Trichardt. The programme provides coaching, equipment, mentorship, and the option to take part in tournaments to its partic-

ipants at a very affordable price.

“At R100 per quarter, this opportunity offers exceptional value due to dedicated, unpaid volunteers who are committed to grassroots development and growth of the game,” said Erik, who heads up the local coaching team.

The initiative involves a weekly session on Wednesdays from 17:00 to 18:00 and quarterly tournaments. From these quarterly tournaments, a team will be selected to represent Limpopo Squash at national tournaments. Even the players who do not get selected for the provincial team will be considered for a team that tours to clubs in Gauteng.

To join the Limpopo Junior Squash programme or to become a member of the Soutpansberg squash club, Erik Welman can be contacted on 063 168 9851.

66-run loss for Louis Trichardt XI

Khaif Patel destroys Yetman Yabbies’ bowling attack

The next round of matches in the Louis Trichardt Cricket Club’s T10 league was decided on Saturday, 5 November, with both Limpopo Dairy and Jolly XI coming away with a win in their respective matches at the Louis Trichardt Oval.

In the first match of the day, Limpopo Dairy came up against the Roaring Lions. Limpopo went in to bat first and got off to a bit of a shaky start, with openers Bielie van den Berg en Christian Barnard out for a mere 3 runs. FC Phillipson and Morné Olwage, however, got the team’s run rate going again with contributions of 55 and 44 runs respectively, helping Limpopo end on a total of 113 runs for the loss of two wickets in their allotted 10 overs. For the Roaring Lions, Brian Vermeulen took one wicket for the loss of 11 runs in his two overs (1/11/2), while team mate Fahan Khoja took 1/7/1.

With only 113 runs to chase down, the Roaring Lions might have fancied their chances of taking a win, but that was not to be. Opener Suffiyan Dala got off to a quick start of 17 runs off seven balls, but apart from him, the only other Lions batsman to score double digits was Brian Vermeulen with a well-played 50 runs (not out) off 35 balls. The Roaring Lions fell short of the total with a final score of 88/4, giving Limpopo a 25-run victory. For Limpopo, bouler Dewald

Joubert took 2/7/2, while Christian Barnard took 1/7/1 and FC Philipson 1/4/1.

In the next clash of the day, Jolly XI took to the field against the Yetman Yabbies, and what a game it was! Jolly XI batsman Khaif Patel delivered a batting extravaganza, knocking an unbelievable 160 run off only 41 balls, which included eight fours and 20 sixes. He overshadowed his fellow team mates, who also managed double-digit scores, namely Naeem Patel (15) and Muhammed Sagir (12), and steered his team to a final score of 204 for the loss of two wickets. The two wickets that fell came from the bowling of Riaan Gerber, who took 2/19/2.

With such a humongous total to chase down, the Yetman Yabbies batsmen had their work cut out for them, but they struggled to gain momentum, fighting their way to 60 runs for the loss of four wickets in their ten overs, giving Jolly XI a 144-run victory.
