Bykans drie jaar later hoop ‘n 69-jarige ma van Louis Trichardt dat sy uiteindelik antwoorde sal kry op wie presies verantwoordelik was vir haar seun se moord op ‘n kleinhoewe net buite die dorp. “Ek wil nog al die tyd weet wat dié dag gebeur het,” het me. Magda Strydom, ma van die vermoorde mnr. Tony Strydom (45), Maandag gesê. Tony het saam met sy tweede vrou, Rieta Strydom (née Brown), en sy seuns, Hendrik en Pieter, in ‘n huurhuis op een van die Ridgeway-plotte (aangrensend tot Leeustraat) gebly. Sy liggaam is Saterdag, 2 Julie 2016, in die veld nie ver van sy huis af nie, gevind deur sy twee seuns. Hulle het volgens hulle verklaring aan die polisie destyds gesê hulle het na hom gaan soek toe dit begin donker word en hy nie huis toe gekom het nie. In daardie stadium het die familie aangevoer dat Tony vroeër die dag alleen op die plot se skietbaan sou gaan teiken skiet het. Sedert sy liggaam gevind is, was die omstandighede wat gelei het tot sy dood ‘n raaisel. Die nadoodse ondersoek sou aan die lig bring dat hy dood is vanweë ‘n enkele koeëlwond in sy rug. Dit het die moontlikheid van ‘n skietongeluk uitgeskakel. Dan was daar die moontlikheid dat hy geskiet is tydens ‘n rooftog. Al wat egter vermis was vanaf die toneel was sy vuurwapen. Sy persoonlike besittings en beursie was nog in sy bakkie. Weens die bevindinge van die nadoodse ondersoek het die polisie ‘n moordsaak geopen. Rieta was destyds hewig ontsteld oor gerugte wat die rondte begin doen het dat sy en die seuns

betrokke was by Tony se dood. “Daar word vir my vertel dat ek hom sou doodgeskiet het vir sy geld ... Ek is moeg vir dié stories … Nog iemand het uit die Vrystaat gebel en gesê hulle het gehoor dat sy seuns hom doodgeskiet het en wou weet of dit waar is,” het Rieta in ‘n onderhoud met die Zoutpansberger gesê twee weke na Tony se dood. Met geen verdagtes en geen nuwe leidrade nie het die polisie eers die saak van moord na ‘n geregtelike doodsondersoek verander en daarna die saak gesluit. Die saak sou egter verlede week ‘n dramatiese wending neem met die nuus dat die nou 66-jarige Rieta en Tony se seun Hendrik (25) gearresteer is en Vrydag in die hof op Louis Trichardt verskyn het op aanklag dat hulle Tony vermoor het. Hul arrestasie volg nadat Rieta na bewering weens ‘n skuldige gewete aan ‘n familielid sou erken het wat presies die dag van Tony se dood gebeur het. Alhoewel die presiese omstandighede wat tot Tony se dood gelei in die opvolgende hofsaak duidelik sal word, doen gerugte die rondte dat Rieta en Hendrik teenwoordig was tydens Tony se dood. Wie die sneller getrek het, sal deur die hof bepaal moet word, maar klaarblyklik sal die verweer wees dat Tony ‘n uiters afbrekende verhouding van mishandeling met sy vrou en seuns gehad het. Rieta en Hendrik is elk op R1 000 borgtog vrygelaat. Hul saak is uitgestel tot 24 Mei vir verdere ondersoek. Teen druktyd is nog ‘n arrestasie in verband met die saak verwag, maar dit kon nie bevestig word nie. “Laat hulle tronk toe gaan! Hoekom het hulle Mnr. Tony Strydom (45) wat op 2 Julie 2016 op ‘n kleinhoewe buite Louis Trichardt vermoor stilgebly?” het ma Magda op die nuus van die twee is. The two Fidelity security guards who were arrested on 16 January after almost R2,6 million was found buried in the ground, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday, 3 April. The two were arrested after a team of operatives comprising members derived from the Provincial Organized Crime unit, Crime Intelligence, the Makhado Task Team and Thohoyandou Tactical Response Team (TRT) were assembled to conduct a well-coordinated operation at different identified sites. This after information was received of a substantial amount of money that went missing from Fidelity in Louis Trichardt. The operation, which commenced on the after-

noon of 16 January, proceeded through the night until the next morning. Characterized by relentless searches, probing and digging by the members at three different premises, the effort produced positive results when the cash was found buried in the backyards of the identified sites. Some of the cash was found stashed in ice cream containers and refuse bags. Although the police initially recovered just over R2,6 million in stolen money, the amount on the charge sheet that went missing totalled just over R2,9 million. One of the suspects had already also bought a double-cab vehicle, which was confiscated by the police. Luvhimbi and Maluleke’s case was postponed for sentencing until 13 to 15 May and both will remain in custody until then. The reason for the postponement was to obtain pre-sentence reports since the offence carries minimum sentences. According to Section 51(2), read with Part II of Schedule 2 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, Act 105 of 1997, the minimum sentence for a first offender is no less than 15 years, no less than 20 years for a second offender and no less than 25 years for a third-time offender.

Bossie gelukkig om te leef ná buffel hom gaffel Deur Andries van Zyl

Dit is nie aldag dat jy deur ‘n buffel aangeval en deurboor word en dan nog lewe om die storie te vertel nie. Dit is presies wat met die 39-jarige mnr. Bossie Mostert van Limpopo Big Game Safaris gebeur het. Bossie sterk tans in die MediKliniek in Tzaneen aan, nadat hy verlede Vrydag twee keer deur ‘n gekweste buffel op ‘n plaas in die Waterpoort-omgewing gegaffel is. Die Zoutpansberger het hierdie week met sy verloofde, die 41-jarige Ronél Klopper, gesels. Die drama het verlede Dinsdag, 2 April, begin toe ‘n kliënt van Bossie ‘n massiewe buffelbul op ‘n plaas in die Waterpoort-omgewing gekwes het. Die gewonde dier het ‘n goeie bloedspoor gelos wat gevolg kon word. Die spoor is gevolg en teen laat Donderdag het die buffel begin sirkel in ‘n sekere gebied. Prinsloo, op bystand gehad. In ‘n stadium het Bossie-hulle op baie vars spore afgekom. Dit was ongeveer 08:00. Hulle het hul ligging aan Herman-hulle per radio gekommunikeer en gevra dat Herman en Dieter moet begin inbeweeg. Kort daarna het Bossie, Robert en Bethuel van die bakkie afgeklim en letterlik net ‘n paar treë die bos begin instap, toe storm die gekweste buffel. Die buffel het op die ongewapende Robert afgestorm. Bossie het dadelik vir Robert uit die pad gestamp en kon een skoot afgevuur kry op die buffel. Bethuel kon ook ‘n skoot afkry, maar toe was die buffel reeds bo-op Bossie. Die buffel het Bossie twee keer gegaffel. Die eerste keer is sy regterbeen oopgeruk van net bo sy knie tot by sy lies. Die tweede keer het die beneukte buffel sy linkersy net bokant die heup deurboor. ‘n Swaer verwonde Bossie kon skuiling vind in ‘n bos, terwyl Robert agter ‘n klein Mopanieboompie gaan skuil het. “Dit was presies 08:23 wat my foon gelui het,” het Ronél gesê. Dit was Bossie. “Die oproep het my yskoud laat word. Hy het net gesê: ‘Bokka, ek is lief vir jou’. Ek het gesê dat ek ook

lief is vir hom en gevra of hulle al die buffel gekry het. Toe sê hy: ‘Bokka, ek het baie seergekry ... Bly jy by die lodge, hulle is op pad’,” het Ronél gesê. Herman en Dieter was binne minute ná die aanval op die toneel. Hulle het gedoen wat hulle kon om die bloeding te stop en dadelik per bakkie deurgejaag na die Zoutpansberg Privaathospitaal. Hier is sy toestand gestabiliseer en hy is Vrydagmiddag daarvandaan oorgeplaas na die MediKliniek in Tzaneen. “Die dokters het dit beskryf as ‘n wonderwerk en jy kon die verbasing op die familie se gesigte sien dat hy nog leef,” het Ronél gesê. Te midde van die skade het die buffel al Bossie se belangrikste slagare en organe gemis. Bossie is direk teater toe vir ‘n vier-uur-lange operasie om die skade aan sy buik te herstel. “Hy is gelukkig verskriklik fiks … Die dokters kon dadelik opereer, omdat sy hart so sterk is,” het Ronél gesê. Maandag is hy weer teater toe om die skade aan sy been te begin herstel. Buiten vir ‘n

paar gebreekte ribbes, het hy geen ander frakture gehad nie. “Dit gaan baie goed met Bossie,” het Ronél Woensdagoggend gesê. Sy het bygevoeg dat hy intussen darem al weer ‘n paar treë kon loop. Volgens Ronél herleef Bossie egter nog kort-kort die nagmerrie. Daar is veral een gebeurtenis wat hom geweldig ontsenu. “Toe hy daar in die bos gelê het, het die buffel na hom gedraai en hulle het vir wat soos ‘n ewigheid gevoel het stip na mekaar gestaar. Die buffel het omgedraai en ook na Robert gestaar, maar toe weer teruggedraai na Bossie en vir hom gestaar. Die buffel het daarna die bosse in gestap,” het Ronél vertel. Hoe lank Bossie nog in die intensiewe eenheid sal moet bly, is nie seker nie. Volgens die dokters kan hy dalk teen die naweek oorgeplaas word na ‘n gewone saal. Intussen sê Ronél dis net die Here se beskermende hand en Bossie se geloof wat hom gered het. “Die Here is groot en alle glorie aan Hom!” het Ronél gesê. Sy het bygevoeg sy reël eerder vir die betaling van Bossie se mediese rekening as om ‘n begrafnis te reël. Wat die buffel betref? Dié is ‘n dag later nie ver vanwaar hy Bossie gegaffel het nie ‘n finale doodskoot gegee.

Ek is op soek na ou foto’s van die twee skole. Kan enige iemand my help, of verwys na iemand wat wel so iets aan my kan verskaf vir ‘n boek wat ek doen? Eugene Maree oorlede In Memoriam

‘n Bekende Louis Trichardt sakeman en eie naar van Louis Trichardt Bierverspreiders, die 84-jarige mnr. Eugene Maree, is Saterdag, 6 April, na ‘n lang siekbed oorlede. Wyle Eugene het op 12 Mei verlede jaar ‘n ernstige beroerte gehad. Alhoewel hy aanvanklik heel goed herstel het, het sy gesondheid sedert Desember dramaties agteruit gegaan. Hy was die laaste twee weke bedlêend gewees. Eugene se eggenote, kinders, kleinkinders, familie, vriende en werknemers het met hartseer van hom afskeid geneem. Hy is veral geloof vir die rol wat hy in die plaaslike sakegemeenskap gespeel het. “Hy was lief vir God, sy gesin, die Krugerwildtuin, gholf en ‘n groot voorstander van suiwer Afrikaans,” het sy familie gesê. Voor hy in 1986 na Louis Trichardt verhuis het om Louis

Trichardt Bierverspreiders te stig, was hy vir ‘n paar jaar woonagtig in Polokwane waar hy betrokke was by SAB (Suid-Afrikaanse Brouerye). Wyle Eugene laat sy lewensmaat Martie, sy drie kinders Eugene, Leonie en Irma, skoonseun Niewies, skoonfamilie, vyf kleinkinders en geliefde familie en vriende agter. ‘n Roudiens word op Vrydag, 12 April, om 12:00 vanuit die NG Kerk Moedergemeente (Haantjiekerk) vir hom gehou. Die diens sal waargeneem word deur ds. Corné Burger. Die familie het hul opregte dank uitgespreek teenoor al die versorgers wat hom so mooi opgepas het sedert sy beroerte. Dank het ook gegaan aan sy huisdokter, dr. Pieter de Wet, en die personeel van die Zoutpansberg Privaathospitaal. “Baie dankie ook aan die gemeenskap van Louis Trichardt en vir almal se woorde van vertroosting en boodskappe van ondersteuning,” het die familie gesê. Wat sê die Bybel oor die Heilige Gees?

Hierdie is die tweede in ‘n reeks van drie oordenkings oor die Heilige Gees, en wat die Woord van God oor Hom openbaar. Lees: Johannes 14:15-31 (spesifiek verse 16,17 en 26)

eel 2: Die Heilige Gees werk onomkeerbare veranderinge in die mens. Wat glo ons van die werking van God die Heilige Gees wat aan ons gegee is? Glo ons dat Hy ‘n hulpmiddel is wat ‘n hupstoot aan mense se geloof gee? Glo ons dat die mens self eers iets by God moet verdien voor hy die Heilige Gees kan ontvang? Die Heilige Gees is geen hulpmiddel of beloning vir geloof nie. Hy is die absolute bron en gewer van ons geloof. Sonder Hom sal daar hoegenaamd geen gelowige op aarde kon wees nie, en daarmee saam geen verlos sing nie. Die rede hiervoor is dat redding deur die geloof kom, en dit is deur die Heilige Gees dat die geloof ontstaan. Die Skrif leer ons dat die Heilige Gees die mens oproep tot geloof. Dit doen Hy deur die Woord, God se eie besondere openbaring. Wanneer ons met die Bybel besig is, ontkiem hierdie geloof in ons harte. In Johannes 14:17 word daar geopenbaar hoe die Heilige Gees die Gees van Waarheid is: Hy verkondig die waarheid van die evangelie, die kruisdood en opstanding van Christus. Hy verkondig dat ons in hierdie dinge moet glo tot redding. Die Heilige Gees roep die mens egter nie net op tot die geloof nie, maar Hy werk ook die ware geloof in die hart van die mens. Hy self sorg, op wonderbaarlike wyse, dat alle twyfel uit ons harte geneem word en dat ons waarlik die verlosserskap van Jesus Christus omarm. Verder is die Heilige Gees ook die Een wat ons wedergebore maak. Om deur die Heilige Gees wedergebore te word, beteken dat Hy nuwe lewe in die mens wek. Die Heilige Gees vernuwe die mens op so ‘n wonderbaarlike wyse dat hy afstand doen van die heerskappy van die wêreld en die sonde. Ons soek nie meer die sonde op nie, maar die nuwe lewe in Christus. Ons moet mooi besef: Ons kan nie uit ons eie glo nie. Om hierdie rede is daar ook geen manier waarop die mens die Heilige Gees kan “verdien” nie. Al hoe meer stemme gaan daarvoor op dat die Heilige Gees ‘n tweede of selfs derde “seëning” is vir ‘n besonder vroom lewe voor God. Dit is doodeenvoudig nie waar nie! Om ‘n gelowige te wees, om wedergebore te wees, om bekeerlinge tot die Here te wees, beteken dat die Heilige Gees reeds in ons is. Dit kan nie anders wees nie. Dit is slegs deur die Gees wat ons tot God kan bekeer, en ons hele wese aan Hom kan oorgee. Slegs deur Hom kan ons God se eis van gehoorsaamheid en liefde uitvoer. Slegs omdat die Heilige Gees in ons is, kan ons volhard in die stryd teen die Satan en die sonde, en kan ons met groot verwagting uitsien na die verheerliking in Christus. - Ds. DA files complaint with SAHRC to probe Vhembe Local politics

The Democratic Alliance (DA) officially filed a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on Tuesday to probe the failure of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) to provide consistent clean water to all residents for the past five years. “This is a clear violation of Section 27 of the Constitution,” said Mr Jacques Smalle (DA Limpopo premier candidate) in a press release. According to Smalle, residents in the rural villages of municipalities such as Makhado, Musina and Thulamela have been struggling to get water and no turnaround strategies have been implemented to supply water as an interim relief to the residents. He highlighted the fact that many areas, including Louis Trichardt, Tshikota, Elim and surrounds, were left without water for the past two weeks. “The communal water taps dotted around many villages in these municipalities within Vhembe are no longer in use as they remain waterless. Some families fetch water from streams nearby where cattle and goats also drink, whilst others resort to buying water from their neighbours who have boreholes,” said Smalle. He added that the crisis also

affected local businesses in all the CBDs and malls in Louis Trichardt, Elim, Musina and Thulamela. “The water crisis happens despite the launch of a R513 million water project between Valdezia and Mouwkop reservoir [in Louis Trichardt] in 2017. The water project was intended to supply water to Makhado, the Makhado Air Force Base and 33 villages within the Sinthumule and Kutama areas, but the project has been abandoned and left incomplete by a contractor,” said Smalle. Smalle reiterated that the VDM, as the water-services authority to all these municipalities, has incurred over R1.2 billion of unauthorised, irregular and fruitless and wasteful expenditure that cannot be accounted for. “To compound the matter, the municipality illegally invested and subsequently lost more than R300 million at the liquidated VBS Mutual Bank,” said Smalle. Smalle said the DA believed that the wasted money should have been utilised to build more reservoirs, boreholes and establish more water projects to address this crisis within the district. He said the DA urged the SAHRC to commence with their investigation and ensure that officials were held accountable for violating the rights of Vhembe residents.

Hawks continue to clamp down on corruption at vehicle testing stations Crime

The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team has arrested another four suspects in their continuous fight to combat fraud and corruption at vehicle testing stations. The arrests took place in Musina on Wednesday, 3 April. Amongst the arrested suspects (aged between 28 and 37) were two vehicle examiners and two clerks, all from the Thusalushaka Testing Station. The officials are alleged to have used the identity particulars of unsuspecting victims to issue roadworthy certificates for vehicles that were never subjected to mandatory tests.

“The arrests follow a recent similar success in Musina late last month, where another four officials from the Thusalushaka Testing Station were apprehended,” said Hawks spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke. All four arrested officials have already appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud and corruption and were released on R1 000 bail each. Since last week, the Hawks closed another vehicle testing station in Limpopo. In a sting operation by the Hawk’s Serious Corruption Investigation unit, in collaboration with Road Traffic Management Corporation and Special Investigating Unit, a

private vehicle testing station in Lephalale was closed on Monday. Seven officials, five vehicle examiners and two clerks aged between 26 and 57 were also arrested. The charges against them are also related to their allegedly using the identity particulars of unsuspecting victims to issue roadworthy certificates for vehicles that were never brought to the testing station for compulsory tests. During the operation, computers and documents were also seized. On Tuesday, another five officials aged between 23 and 62, among them three examiners and two cashiers, were arrested at the Lephalale local vehicle testing station.

The Limpopo police’s relentless fight against the scourge of crime yielded positive results with the arrest of 12 suspects during an intelligence driven operation. The arrests were effected in the Tzaneen, Thohoyandou, Mahwelereng and Groblersdal clusters. In the Tzaneen Cluster, four suspects aged between 22 and 37 were arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as car hijacking that occurred in the Thohoyandou policing area on 7 April at around 21:00. “This follows an incident where a 34-year-old man was opening a gate at his home at Thohoyandou when a group of men appeared from nowhere and forced him and his daughter into their car at gunpoint and drove away with them,” said provincial police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe. Ridgeway College in Louis Trichardt’s annual Forest Walk in the Komatiland plantation outside Louis Trichardt will take place on 13 April this year. A 4km and an 8km distance can be walked. Registration will take place at 08:00, with the race starting at 09:00. Participation costs R25 per primary school student and R50 for high school students and adults. In hierdie week se gereelde kolom oor die Soutpansberg se slange word daar gekyk na die Olyfgrasslang (Psammophis mossambicus). “Hierdie slang is een van die groter grasslange, met ‘n gemiddelde lengte van tussen 1,4 en 1,6 meter. Hulle kan selfs tot 1,8 meter groei,” het plaaslike slangkenner en -vanger Jan “Slang” van Rooyen gesê. Jan is weer terug in die Soutpansberg na ‘n paar maande se verblyf in Natal. Volgens Jan is hierdie die giftigste van al die grasslange en pik graag as hy gevang word. “Sy gif is egter matig en het amper geen uitwerking op die mens nie,” het Jan gesê. Hy het bygevoeg dat die Olyfgrasslang ook eerder vinnig sal probeer vlug as dit teëgekom word. Wat egter teen die slang tel is dat baie mense, volgens Jan, hom verwar met die Boomslangwyfie of selfs

die Swart Mamba. Hierdie slang maak aktief jag op sy prooi, wat insluit akkedissies, paddas, voëls, klein soogdiere en selfs ander slange. Mense is beslis nie op sy spyskaart nie. “So, wanneer hierdie slang teëgekom word, los hom maar net uit. Hy sal self aanbeweeg en daar is geen rede om bang te wees vir die slang nie,” het Jan gesê. Jan het inwoners weereens versoek om hom of Frikkie Venter te skakel indien hulle ‘n probleem met ‘n slang het. “Laat hom eerder verwyder as om hom dood te maak,” het Jan gesê. Hy het derhalwe inwoners versoek om sy (081 217 9213) en Frikkie se nommer (082 058 7601) op hulle fone te stoor. “Onthou asseblief dat alhoewel ons nie geld vra om die slange te vang nie, ‘n donasie welkom sal wees aangesien ons tog uitgawes, soos vervoer, het om die slang te kom vang,” het Jan gesê.

Madombidzha rugby club to unearth talent By Mbulaheni Ridovhona

In an effort to unearth local talent and to give youngsters an opportunity to develop a passion for rugby, Tony Marageni recently started a rugby club at his home village at Madombidzha. Marageni said that the Madombidzha Rugby Club was started to give children in the rural areas the same opportunity to play and learn rugby as those in the towns. “We also want to build a rugby culture in Madombidzha and get kids off the streets by getting them involved in as many sports as pos-

sible,” Marageni added. “With the transformation talks in rugby circles, it is also essential to have such initiatives in the rural areas, where most of the black people live.” When asked if a proper facility existed for the rugby club, he said that they were planning to have a multi-purpose complex built in Madombidzha that would give the community the opportunity to live a more active lifestyle. “With a sustainable rugby club in Madombidzha, businesses will have something to invest in the community, which in turn can improve the economy of the village. The kids who play rugby will also have the opportunity to make a career out of it or even receiving rugby bursaries from top institutions in the country,” he added. He said that they also wanted to introduce rugby in the local schools within the Madombidzha area, which would improve their school facilities and get them more potential sponsors. The rugby club welcomes everyone willing to play rugby. “The players we have range from six- to 20-year-olds, but everyone is welcome to join us. We won’t turn you away,” he said. Marageni explained that he fell in love with rugby at the tender age of six. “I’m passionate about rugby, because it has given me a lot of opportunities and taught me a lot of life skills. I have travelled around the country and created so many brotherhoods through the game of rugby. I love rugby because it teaches one discipline and gives you an opportunity to express yourself, and the fact that it’s a fun sport to play is a huge bonus,” he added. Messina se fietsryers maak gereed vir nuwe skole fietsryseisoen Laerskool Messina se fietsryers het mekaar weereens op 15 Maart die stryd aangesê ter voorbereiding van die komende skole fietsryseisoen. Die leerlinge met die beste tye is as wenners gekroon. Eerste plekke het gegaan aan (voor, van links na regs) Aeden Anderson, Elané Visser, Mvelo Mhlanga en Elru Brits (afwesig met die neem van die foto). Agter staan me. Maret Schoeman (afrigter), Geané Anderson, Waldo Strïjdom, Dané Strïjdom, Jaun-Claude Breedt en me. Mariaan Vorster (afrigter). Elané en Jaun-Claude was ook die beste junior ryers, terwyl Dané en Waldo die beste senior trappers was. Die borge van die kompetisie was Talisman (pette vir eerste plek), Tiffany van den Berg (waterbottels vir junior en senior wenners) en Serendipity en Christelle van der Walt (sjokolade vir tweede en derde plek). CJ tweede by SA kampioenskappe Die jong CJ du Plessis seil oor die hoogspringlat tydens die Suid-Afrikaanse Skole Atletiekkampioenskappe in Germiston op 15 en 16 Maart. CJ, ‘n Graad 4-leerling van Laerskool Louis Trichardt, het die beste gevaar van die skool se vyf leerlinge wat vir die kampioenskap gekwalifiseer het met ‘n tweede plek in die hoogspring vir seuns o.10.
