Results show not all water is fit to drink
The SRPA used a certified company to do water tests for their association and had the water tested at eight different locations. Of the first five locations, the water samples at two locations were unfit for human use. The last three samples were taken at locations where sewage spillage has occurred for years.
The SRPA recommended that sampling be repeated at two of the locations. In the second round, the test results showed that at the outside taps of both Ridgeway College and Louis Trichardt High School the water was still not fit for human consumption.
Following weeks of dirty drinking water, the Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association (SRPA) gave the Makhado and Vhembe Municipality an ultimatum of 10 days to provide them with their weekly water test results. In the meantime, the ratepayers conducted their own tests. “It has been weeks now that the residents of Louis Trichardt have been struggling with contaminated water,” the SRPA states in a letter to the municipal manager, dated 19 March. The SRPA said that they used a certified independent company to do water tests for the association. “We hereby request the tests done by either you [Vhembe] or the Makhado Municipality, proving different results. Please make sure we get the results within 10 working days. If the results are not given within the 10 working days, we will assume that the results are the same as ours and we will then publish the tests results in our possession,” states the letter from the SRPA. No response was received from the municipalities. The SRPA had the water tested at eight different locations. Water was tested at an outside tap in Tshikota, an outside tap in the town’s downtown area, Gateway Lodge, Ridgeway College, Louis Trichardt High School (outside tap), at the dam in the grazing camp near the Sinthumule/Kutama road, at the
sewerage pump station near SA Breweries and at the sewerage dam at the Eltivillas sewerage pump station. The water samples from Tshikota and Louis Trichardt downtown was fit for human use. Bacteria were present, but the level was still below the recommended limit for drinking water. The water at the inside tap at Gateway Lodge was fit for human use. The water at Ridgeway College’s outside tap was not fit for human use. Bacteria were present and the counts were above the recommended limit for drinking water. The water at the outside tap at Louis Trichardt High School was also not fit for human use. At the last three locations, there have been sewerage spillages for years and the water there was unfit for human consumption. At the grazing camp, the report states a likelihood of contamination from vegetables and other crops eaten raw, and milk from cows grazing on pastures will result in the transmission of human pathogens. The report warns that the E.coli count at the industrial area near the breweries was extremely high, indicating untreated sewerage. “As the chance for infestation increases with the amount of E.coli present, the risk involved with recreational contact can be seen as high,” reads the report. The same warnings apply to the Eltivillas sewerage dam. The samples were taken on
8 February. The SRPA recommended that samples be repeated at the two schools and that was done on 22 February. In the second round, the test results showed that at the outside taps of both schools the water was still not fit for human use. The coliforms, E.coli and bacteria counts were above the recommended limit for drinking water. The report states that bacterial counts should be much lower and should preferably contain no coliforms. “It is unacceptable to have Escherichia coli (E.coli) in drinking water, as it indicates recent faecal contamination and indicates that other human pathogens such as Vibrio cholera (cholera) and Salmonella typhi (typhoid fever), rotar virus and protozoan parasites can be present,” the report states. The samples were tested and the report compiled by QMS Agri Science. The SRPA sent copies of the letter with the ultimatum to the national Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Bomo Edna Molewa, the national Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr M R Baloyi, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr N C Motsepe, and the Public Protector. Minister Baloyi responded and said that he had refered the matter to MEC Motsepe “to closely monitor the situation and interact with your association towards sustainable solutions to the problem of water in your town.”

• A phoneword dials exactly like a telephone number • ABC = 2 - to dial the A B or C press the 2 only once • PQRS = 7 - to dial the P Q R or S press the 7 only once • The same applies for the rest of the alphabet • The 0 & 1 on your keypad does not have any alphabet letter associated with it and is not used when phoning a phoneword except for dialling the ‘code’ or ‘prefix’ • It is similar to texting. The only difference is that you press the number only once for the letter that you want to dial, even if it is the F S or X Cellular phone words might be a very useful tool for small businesses, especially businesses ‘on the go’.
slaan.

Hy het vir baie jare by Pennells Castings gewerk. Sy ambag was ‘n ketelmaker en sy hande het vir niks verkeerd gestaan nie, ‘n ware Jack of all Trades. Hy was ook by Kitchen and Home werksaam. Adrian Joubert by Woolworths gedoen, toe Woolworths nog ‘n franchise was. “Mynhardt was so lief vir kreef en snoek,” onthou Marisa.

Road fatalities on the Limpopo roads have decreased this past Easter weekend, compared to the same period last year. This was announced in a media statement issued by the provincial Department of Roads and Transport on Tuesday. Twenty-two people lost their lives on the province’s roads the past Easter, compared to the 25 last year. “Two major routes, the N1 and R101 leading in and out of the province, were heavily congested as expected, with holiday makers and members of the ZCC Church making their annual pilgrimage to Moria. The province recorded more than 7 600 vehicles that entered and exited Limpopo between 5 April and 9 April,” said the department. Apart from reducing the senseless loss of lives this Easter, the number of road accidents was significantly reduced from 83 in 2011 to 49 this year. Many of the accidents in the province happened in the villages and townships as opposed to major
routes. In the Vhembe district, one person died on road B3635, in Giyani at Xihosane village, when the driver of a Toyota sedan lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle overturned, claiming the life of one passenger while the driver and one passenger were injured. At Ndwambe village, a pedestrian (a 34-year-old woman) was hit and killed by a sedan while crossing the road. One person died and four people were injured at Tshiozwi when a bakkie driver lost control and the vehicle overturned. Another pedestrian (a 34-year-old male) was hit and killed on the R81 in Bolobedu and Belleview village. Two people were killed in the Waterberg district in Lephalale at Slangfontein when a bakkie’s tyre burst and it overturned. Two people died on the Malebogo and Taibosch road between Eldorado and Tevrede when a sedan overturned. “Many of the accidents this Easter happened in the villages and the townships. As the depart-
ment, we are going to strengthen our working relation with the municipalities to ensure that we reduce carnage on the municipal routes. We are further going to engage with the broader communities to ensure that all road users in our communities change their behaviour, obey all the rules of the road, reduce speed and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol,” said the department. During this Easter, at least 27 229 cars were stopped and screened, while 1 232 vehicles were tested for roadworthiness. A total of 29 cars were taken off the road while 59 were impounded. A further 112 road users were arrested (17 for drunk driving, 10 for suspected stolen vehicles, one for possession of dagga, one for bribery, one for reckless and negligent driving and 10 for driving without public transport permits). A total of 104 warrants were issued. The highest speed recorded on the province’s roads during the Easter weekend was 143km/h in an 80km/h zone.

Veiligheid
PhumudzoTshiovhe, asook die projekorganiseerder, me. Lize Pentz.
The Musina China Wholesale Centre is expected to create approximately 400 job opportunities. Development
Centre a huge boost for Musina economy The local economic development of Musina received a huge boost after the opening of 40 shops at the Musina China Wholesale Centre. The centre has 150 shops and the remaining ones will also be opened to the public in due course. The R600 million project was launched by Premier Cassel Mathale in 2010. The initiative is expected to provide approximately 400 permanent job opportunities. The Musina China Wholesale Centre covers a total area of approximately 100 000 square meters. Ateic International Property Group Chairman Peter Zhang said that, in line with the expansion of border trade and the commercial opportunities
regarding the development of wholesale malls, this development would allow neighbouring countries to purchase a wide variety of commodities. This will also create prosperity for the South African border region and strengthen trade with neighbouring countries, he added. “There are no large trade wholesale malls in any border cities or towns in South Africa. Since border trade is one of the successful factors in China’s rapid economic growth, it should be a greater development pattern for South Africa too.” Mayor Carol Phiri says the development would have many economic benefits for the people of Musina. “Besides being convenient for local residents, it will provide much-needed jobs,
particularly for previously unemployed people. We acknowledge that this development is as one of our best achievements, reflecting on the history of the economic development of Musina. We are excited to be part of this ground-breaking industrial development which is bringing economic relief to our people.” According to her, the success of the development will open the gateway for investors to put their money into Musina and help to create the kind of South Africa “we all want to live in.This investment will remain a lasting legacy to the community of Musina which already has a significant impact on the already booming economy of the town.”

Apart from its new look, the Zoutpansberger’s website (www.zoutpansberger.co.za) offers readers a new calendar entry service on their Events Page. Visitors to the website can now list their calendar entries for upcoming events on the Events Page themselves. It is as easy as merely logging in on the Events Page through your existing Google, Facebook or Twitter accounts and uploading your entry. The entry will, however, not appear immediately as it has to go through a moderation process first.

Biotechnology opens up opportunities Local foresters and farmers recently had the opportunity to learn more about the latest biotechnology. “Opportunities for forestry and agriculture that have emerged in recent times from the application of biotechnology and bioinformatics are immense, and almost beyond imagination. Currently, forestry and food crops containing novel genes are already being deployed. Wellrecognised examples include the incorporation of genes conferring herbicide and pest resistance onto plants,” says Mr Dries Alberts of the Soutpansberg Plant Pest and Disease Council and an agricultural consultant of Levubu. In order to obtain more knowledge on biotechnology, the Soutpansberg Plant Pest and Disease Council invited the Forestry and Agriculture Biotechnology Institute (FABI) to visit the Soutpansberg during February this year. The local pest and disease
council was established in 2005 and has since worked in close contact with FABI. Based on recognition that the future of forestry and agriculture will depend strongly on the incorporation of new technologies into these industries, FABI was established in 1997 at the University of Pretoria. Besides the development of genes to confer herbicide and pest resistance onto plants, other products are also appearing rapidly and FABI says that this trend will not slow down in coming years. Food security is a concern not only in the Soutpansberg, but also nationally and globally. “The rapid developments in genomics and the many full-genome sequences that are emerging will certainly facilitate the development of novel food and fibre crops. These will clearly contribute to global economic development and food security,” says FABI. The forestry and agricultural
sector in Levubu and the Soutpansberg, as in the whole of South Africa, will have to remain competitive with products that are internationally attractive. “We are here to assist this sector of the local economy to meet these goals. This is achieved through goal-directed research undertaken in partnership with major players in these markets,” says FABI. The subtropical and citrus fruit industries, among others, have associations with the staff of the University of Pretoria linked to FABI. Academic staff, post-graduate students as well as research visitors have visited the Soutpansberg in the past. The FABI team that visited the Soutpansberg in February consisted of Dr Brett Hurley, Ms Izette Greyling and Mr Min Lu. Mr Gert Fourie of the Molozi Trust escorted them on visits to the forestry section and Mr Dries Alberts showed them the banana, guava and avo trees, among others.
The Sirex woodwasp has invaded the Soutpansberg and poses a real risk for commercial pine trees. This was confirmed by Dr Brett Hurley from the Forestry and Agriculture Biotechnology Institute (FABI) during a recent visit to the area at the invitation of the Soutpansberg Plant Pest and Disease Council. “For years we lived under the treat that the Sirex woodwasp is approaching the Limpopo. FABI has discovered a few occurrences and foresters in our area are now wide awake to intensify their monitoring. FABI will provide us with a managing programme to either exterminate the woodwasp or manage it,” said Mr Dries Alberts of the local pest and disease council and a Levubu agricultural consultant. The Sirex Noctilio is a species of horntail and has the ability to attack a variety of pine trees, but trees that are under stress are more susceptible. Pine trees that have been attacked develop flagging and the needles turn form green to yellowish-red until they become brown. This could happen over a period of three to six months, with the resultant death of the trees. The Sirex woodwasp is native to Europe, Asia, northern Amercia and northern Africa, but is an invasive species in Australia, New Zealand, South America and South Africa. It was first introduced to South Africa in 1994 when it was found in the Western Cape on Pinus radiata. By 2002, Sirex had spread along the southern Cape and into the Eastern Cape, moving onto Pinus patula. It moved to Kwa-Zulu Natal, where a high pinetree mortality occurred during 2004. It then started moving towards Mpumalanga and Limpopo, placing around 280 000 hectares of pine plantation timber at risk (www. icfr.ukzn.ac.za). The local plant pest and disease council feels that it is of major importance for them to be linked to FABI. FABI is known for their successful and interna-
tionally acclaimed Tree Protection Co-operative Programme (TPCP). This programme, initiated in 1990 before the formal establishment of FABI in 1997, has supported South African Forestry for many years. The TPCP provides the entire forestry industry of South Africa with support in the field of tree health, and more particularly, forest pathology and forest entomology. The group includes projects not only in South Africa, but in other parts of Africa, South America, South East Asia, Europe, Australia and North America. Alberts says that foresters and farmers can keep contact with the Soutpansberg Plant Pest and Disease Council. “It is not as easy for an individual to link up with the best research teams as it is for the council,” Alberts said. He can be contacted at the email address driesa@mweb.co.za

Two South African illegal immigrants were each fined R200 or 10 days in jail on Thursday last week for illegally crossing the border into Zimbabwe through an undesignated entry point along the Limpopo River. Andries Thubakkale (25) and Theophilli Matimba Nkuna (29), both of Polokwane, were convicted on their own pleas of guilty to contravening a section of the Immigration Act (entry by evasion) by local magistrate Ms Sheila Nazombe. It was testified that on 1 April, the two South Africans entered Zimbabwe through an undesignated entry point along the Limpopo River. They were, however, spotted by police detectives who were on a routine border patrol and they ordered the two men to stop. Thubakkale and Nkuna were asked to produce their travel documents and they failed to do so, leading to their arrest.

Library’s doors still remain shut

The Makhado municipal library's gate is still shut, even after the spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, had said that the library would open its doors for public use on 10 April. In December 2011, the municipality issued a public announcement that the municipal library would be temporarily closed for public service “due to roof renovation”. In the statement published on the municipal website, it was stated that the library doors would be closed for public service between 12 December 2011 and 5 January 2012.January came and went and the library doors stayed shut. This situation continued in February and March, with little sign of renovation being carried out. Library users from around Louis Trichardt started expressing their discomfort and dissatisfaction with the library's not being open. They say the renovations are now dragging on instead of coming to completion. Students and learners say that they are being disadvantaged by the municipality's failure to complete the renovation work. Even though the Zoutpansberger's reporter was barred from peeping through the glass windows to see inside the library by the security official on duty, one worker told the paper that library users must not be very hopeful that the library doors will open soon. “Much work still needs to be done, inside and outside the library,” the worker said on condition of anonymity. When contacted for comment on Tuesday morning, municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi said he was on leave and referred the paper to Mr EL Mugari, who was unavailable.

Daar is nog soveel werklike “great” mense in Musina en Polokwane
S
kwane (soos Anandie hulle noem), wildvreemdes, veral ds. Musina en Polokwane het nog GREAT mense.
Die seën van versoening - 2 Korintiërs 5:17-21
V

Sharp increase in cross border travellers Beit Bridge Border Post was heavily congested between Good Friday and Easter Monday as scores of travellers, mostly Zimbabweans working in South Africa, were travelling between the two countries. The Zimbabwean immigration recorded a sharp increase in the number of travellers who passed through Beit Bridge during the Easter holiday, compared to the same period last year. According to statistics, a total of 78 939 people were handled by border officials between Thursday and Sunday, quite a surge compared to the 55 300 of last year. The local assistant regional immigration manager in charge of Beit Bridge, Mr Charles Gwede, said the highest number of travellers was recorded on Good Friday, when 27 389 people passed through the entry port.
“During the entire Easter holiday period, the border was extremely busy and we recorded 52 112 travellers on the entry side while, on the arrival side, we handled a total of 26 827 travellers. This was largely because we had more Zimbabweans and foreigners from neighbouring SADC countries visiting their families,” he said. Gwede attributed this year’s sharp increase in the movement to the documentation exercise in South Africa, which saw many Zimbabweans acquiring longterm study and work permits. “Most of our people are no longer afraid of travelling home during holidays because of the relaxation of South African immigration laws, which have seen a large number of Zimbabweans working in that country,” he added.
Gwede said despite the border’s having been heavily congested during the Easter period, immigration officials efficiently managed the situation, which was also characterised by a huge volume of traffic on the entry side. “We had put mechanisms in place to deal with congestion, hence our officers were able to clear travellers without causing delays,” he said. Gwede said on Sunday they cleared 99 buses, most which were South Africa-bound. Commercial trucks destined for East South Africa-bound traffic queues at the Beit Bridge Border Post on Monday as travellers, and Central African countries mostly Zimbabweans working in the country, were flocking back to South Africa after the Easter such as Tanzania, the Democratic holiday. Republic of Congo and Zambia Uitslae/Results also passed through the border post. Farm laborer in court after fatal stabbing A farm labourer who had allegedly stabbed Waterpoort last year, Mr Gilbert Mabada, and killed a co-worker at one of the farms in appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday. The case was postponed to Monday, 16 April. Mabada (31) is facing a charge of murder after he had allegedly stabbed and killed a 22-year-old coworker, Mr Maxwell Muthuthu. The incident happened at the Jachtkraal Farm on 2 April last year. According to the police report, Muthuthu was drinking with friends at the farm where he worked as a farm labourer, when Mabada visited the farm that day. Mabada then allegedly started quarreling with the victim, which resulted in a fight. It led to Muthuthu’s being stabbed in the chest. He died on the scene. Mabada is a resident of Madimbo in the Niani area. He was denied bail during his first court appearance last year.
The eight-year-old Khaif Patel of the Louis Trichardt Cricket Academy recently caused an upset, when he took a hat trick against Musina and received the award of Man of the Match. What is remarkable is that he played against a senior team, with some of the members already in their twenties. Photo supplied.

naweek, is akkommodasie steeds ‘n kopseer. Om akkommodasie aan te bied, ‘n stalletjie te bespreek of vir meer inligting oor die klub, skakel Stanley by 082 493 3897, Koos by 082 490 6013, Mark by 083 324 8495, Jandré 083 288 5426 of Paula by 015 516 1228.
