‘n Selfoondief, wat “doof-stom” was, het wonderbaarlik weer begin hoor en praat nadat hy gearresteer is.

Die verdagte het sy rieme styfgeloop nadat die eienaar van die selfoon, mev. Andel Greyling, deur sy skelmstreke gesien het en hom sommer self opgespoor het.

Andel, die mede-prinsipaal van Anhetico Eiendomme in Louis Trichardt, was briesend toe sy verlede Donderdag, 5 April, besef het dat haar selfoon van haar lessenaar af gesteel is. Sy vertel dat sy dadelik besef het wat gebeur het.

Die verdagte, Peter Nyahadara (19) van Zimbabwe, het die betrokke Donderdagoggend by Anhetico Eiendomme in Kroghstraat ingestap onder die voorwendsel dat hy doof en stom is.

Volgens Andel het Nyahadara baie na aan haar lessenaar kom staan. In sy hande het hy dokumente gehad waarmee hy vir Andel probeer oortuig het van sy toestand en dat dit die rede is hoekom hy vir geld vra.

Anhetico se beleid is egter dat daar net donasies aan behoorlik geregistreerde instansies of individue gemaak word. Andel het derhalwe Nyahadara die deur gewys.

Dit het Andel ‘n rukkie geneem voordat sy agtergekom het haar selfoon is weg. “Ek het dadelik besef dit moes die bedelaar gewees het,” het Andel gesê.

Sy het eerste ‘n ander eiendomsagent verder af van hulle in dieselfde straat gevra om op die uitkyk te wees vir Nyahadara en hom nie te laat loop as hy daar opdaag nie. Dit was nie lank hierna nie, toe Andel ‘n oproep ontvang om te sê dat die man gewaar is en dat hy op pad was in die rigting van die dorp se sentrale sakegebied.

Andel en een van haar kollegas het dadelik in haar motor gespring om te kyk of hulle die man kan opspoor. ‘n Halfuur later was hulle reg om boedel oor te gee, toe die werknemer die verdagte in Son-

gozwistraat sien loop waar hy by ‘n klein winkeltjie ingegaan het. Andel het Nyahadara dadelik herken as die man wat vroeër by haar in die kantoor was.

Blind van woede het Andel vir Nyahadara in die winkeltjie konfronteer.

“Weet jy, toe ek in die winkel kom toe sien ek hoe hy en die eienaar van die winkel besig is om ‘n nuwe SIM-kaart in my selfoon te sit,” het Andel vertel.

Sy het die winkel se deur toegemaak en vir Nyahadara gesê dat hy solank moet begin praat, want die polisie is op pad om hom te kom arresteer.

Andel se dreigemente het egter nog op “dowe” ore geval. Dit ten spyte daarvan dat die verdwaasde winkeleienaar vir Andel gesê het dat Nyahadara oomblikke vantevore nog woorde, in stede van gebaretaal, gebruik het om vir ‘n nuwe SIM-kaart te vra.

Met die aankoms van die Makhado Polisie het Nyahadara se gehoor “wonderbaarlik” weer begin gewerk. Hy kon amper dadelik vir die polisie gaan wys waar hy Andel se SIM-kaart weggegooi het.

Nyahadara was klaarblyklik nog stomgeslaan oor sy arrestasie, want sy spraak het nie so vinnig teruggekom nie. Later, toe die polisie Andel gehelp het om ‘n saak te open, het dit aan die lig gekom dat hy ‘n Zimbabwiër is.

Almal, insluitend die ondersoekbeampte in die saak, was baie verbaas toe Nyahadara skielik sy spraak teruggekry het in die hof, soveel so dat hy in die hof kon praat sonder die hulp van ‘n tolk.

Hy het skuldig gepleit op ‘n klag van diefstal en is gevonnis tot drie maande gevangenisstraf of ‘n boete van R1 000. Daar is bevestig dat Nyahadara nie die boete kon betaal nie, wat beteken hy sal derhalwe die volgende drie maande in die tronk spandeer.

Andel het na afloop van die voorval haar opregte dank uitgespreek teenoor die Soutpansberg Dorpswag vir hulle flinke optrede deur haar by die winkel by te staan. Sy het ook die Makhado Polisie geloof vir hulle flinke diens om ‘n saak vinnig te registreer.

Thulamela mini library for the blind launched

The blind and visually impaired in Thulamela, who for years could not access information due to the lack of resources, were on Friday on cloud nine as a new mini library, specifically designed for them, was launched.

The facility is part of the 28 new mini libraries for the blind launched countrywide. The launch was officiated by Mr Collins Thovhakale, director of library services in Limpopo, Francois Hendrikz, CEO of the South African Library for the Blind and Dr Maisela Maepa, executive director, core programmes of the National Library of Africa. It was attended by many blind people and other stakeholders.

Ms Bele Netshiheni (50) of Thohoyandou, who became blind in 2012, expressed her appreciation towards the library and encouraged those in attendance not to give up on life because of their

disability. She said she has been an educator for 23 years until her world fell apart in 2012.

“I lost my eye-sight, my marriage also broke up and I spent a lot of time in isolation lamenting about my life. It took courage to accept my situation and I told myself I should not just sit down as God had a purpose with my life and my condition,” she said.

She added that the new section of the library has helped her a lot. “My research proposal for a master’s degree has been approved by the Senate of the University of Venda, thanks to those involved in seeing to it that we have a facility of this nature. We feel accommodated and would urge others to make use of these resources made available specially for us,” she said.

Dr Maisela Maepa said that they still have a long way to go but are happy that they have started. He said he was also excited because of the positive feedback they were getting from the users of the mini libraries. “We are now urging you to spread the good news about the new services and resources at this library. Guard jealously against the vandalization of these resources. When you are angry for services, please be rational and manage your anger and do not destroy these scarce and valuable resources,” said Maepa.

Another pangolin rescued in time Police News

Yet another pangolin was rescued, just in time, by the Makhado Police this week.

Police members, after receiving a tip-off from a member of the public, intervened just in time to stop the pangolin being sold to the illegal muti market. The suspects, two men aged 35 and 42, were found in possession of the pangolin late on Tuesday afternoon.

Two suspects allegedly wanting to cash in on local residents’ gullibility and greed, were in for a big let-down when they were apprehended by the Makhado Police over the past weekend.

The alleged scammers were caught by police during an intelligence led joint operation that was conducted in and around Louis Trichardt on Sunday, 9 April. In fact, the operation focused on rooting out the spread of drugs in the area.

What the police found in the two suspects’ possession was a

powdery substance, that later turned out not to be drugs. Instead it is believed that the two used the synthetic powder to cheat people out of their hardearned money.

Local police spokesperson Const Irene Radzilane shed some light on this scam. She said that scammers will approach people on the street and sell them this powder, under the ruse that it is a miracle washing powder. Fake or blank money notes, not smaller than a R100, washed with this substance will miraculously become “real” money.

suspects, they were allegedly busy defrauding unsuspecting victims. They allegedly promised their victims that they can “convert” their R40 000 into R4 million.

After the arrest, police confiscated the powder, blank money notes and R300 in cash from the suspects. Both suspects, identified as Isaac Newton (43) and Dina Nabifo (34), appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate Court on Monday on charges relating to fraud and the possession of counterfeit money.

Their case was postponed until 23 April. They will remain in custody until then.

We owe it to ourselves to know our Maker and thereby fill our life with a meaningful course rather than a life filled with confusion, hate and depression which all stem upon the misunderstanding of who God is.

Niemand verwag of wil sulke nuus hoor nie, maar dit is presies die skokboodskap wat die 52-jarige Jorrie Jordaan van Louis Trichardt ontvang het, ten spyte van ‘n steeds baie aktiewe leefstyl.

Plaaslike het Jorrie min bekendstelling nodig.

Vir twintig jaar het hy vir die dorp se eerste rugby­ span uitgedraf. Hy was ook, as SA-stoeier, vir twintig jaar verbonde aan die plaaslike stoeiklub. Met die jare wat aanstap het sy liefde vir sport gebly, en tree hy meer onlangs onder meer op as afrigter van die Noordelikes Rugbyklub van Polokwane en Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se rugbyspanne.

Maar waar het dinge begin verkeerd loop?

Vrou Santie vertel dat Jorrie in Oktober 2017 begin kla het van pyn in sy lae rug. “Hy het begin sukkel met sy regterbeen. Dit het pal gevoel soos wanneer jou voet ‘slaap’,” het Santie gesê.

Bekommerd oor sy gesondheid het Jorrie x-strale laat neem en besoek gebring aan ‘n chirurg in Tzaneen. “Dié het Jorrie se werwels wat soos ‘n ‘vraagteken loop’ toegeskryf aan emosionele dinge as gevolg van Jorrie se ma wat gesterf het. Hy is pyn en ander medikasie voorgeskryf,” het Santie gesê.

Jorrie se toestand het egter geen beterskap gewys nie, inteendeel, dit het vererger. Sy regtervoet het al meer begin pyn en dan yskoud en spierwit geword. Daar het ook bloedkolle onder die vel begin vorm. Die pyn in die lae rug het ook nou na die lies verskuif.

Met geen teken van beterskap nie, het Jorrie se huisdokter, dr. Emil Gaigher, voorgestel dat hy met ‘n vriend van hom in Pretoria, ‘n vaskulêre chirurg, gaan gesels.

Dié “gesels” is egter nie goedkoop nie en Jorrie-hulle moes behoorlik rondskarrel om die R14 500 in te samel vir ‘n vaskulêre “scan”.

Die uitslag van die ondersoek was nie goed nie.

Daar is gevind dat Jorrie se hoofslagaar in die maag-area verstop of toegedruk is en dat verskeie are na die been nie meer suurstof en bloed deurkry nie. Die dokters het ook nie doekies omgedraai nie – die been sal heel moontlik binne drie maande geamputeer moet word, indien Jorrie nie vinnig geopereer word om die bloedtoevoer te herstel nie.

Met die ultimatum van sy been verloor, het Jorrie-hulle sommer dadelik die operasie by die Wilgers Hospitaal bespreek.

Dit het vir Jorrie-hulle by nog ‘n finansiële hindernis gebring. “Die koste van die operasie is op R150 000 beraam, waarvan die medies net R23 000 wou betaal, so die operasie kon nie plaasvind nie. Verskeie organisasies is genader om te help, maar die wat wou help kon nie en die wat kon, wou nie,” het Santie gesê.

Vir Jorrie was die nuus ‘n groot terugslag, maar vanuit nêrens het daar vir Jorrie-hulle skielik uitkoms gekom. ‘n Vriend van Jorrie, dr. Benjee Pretorius van

Musina, het van sy verknorsing te hore gekom. Dié het hom op sy beurt verwys na ‘n professors-vriend, dr. Cloete van die Dr George Mukari Akademiese Hospitaal by Ga-Rankuwa in Pretoria. Hierna het dinge vinnig gebeur.

“Sy afspraak was geskeduleer vir Dinsdag, 3 April, en met sy aankoms by die hospitaal is Jorrie deur twee dokters in die vaskulêre eenheid ondersoek. Nadat hulle sy ‘scans’ gesien het, is Jorrie onmiddellik opgeneem. Daarna is verskeie hart-, lewer-, nier-, long- en bloedtoetse op hom gedoen,” het Santie vertel.

Die operasie om twee “stents” in beide sye in te sit is drie dae later vir 6 April geskeduleer. “Volgens die verpleegpersoneel sou die operasie so ‘n uur duur. Jorrie is eers vyf ure later uit die teater gestoot nadat hy, onder toesig van twee professors en vier studente deur ‘n vyfde jaar mediese student geopereer is,” het Santie gesê.

Reeds tydens die operasie het die sonar gewys dat die bloedtoevoer na Jorrie se are teruggekeer het en op Sondag, 8 April, was Jorrie se toestand van so ‘n aard dat hy ontslaan kon word. “Die operasie was ‘n groot sukses was en ons weet God was ten volle daar teenwoordig,” het Santie gesê.

Vir ‘n beter geskenk kon Jorrie, wat Maandag verjaar het, nie gevra het nie. “Hy is reeds terug by die werk, maar vat dit vir eers rustig, want om aan jou hoofslagaar te laat sny is nie grappies. Hy monitor maar gereeld vir bloeding. Die regtervoet word weer warm en sweet weer. Wie sou nou kon dink dat iemand bly sal word as sy voet weer sweet?” het Santie gesê.

Jorrie moet op 23 April terug wees vir ‘n roetine ondersoek by die Dr George Mukhari Hospitaal, maar na die goeie diens en omgee, sê Santie, sal hy dit nie mis nie. “Soos by enige staatshospitaal moet jy ook maar hier in rye sit en jou beurt afwag, maar met ‘n selfoon en lekker boek, sal jy heel anderkant uitkom,” het Santie gesê.

Heidi-Lene se ouer suster, Elze-Marie du Preez, was hierdie week amper in trane toe sy van die goeie nuus laat weet het.

Elze-Marie was veral dankbaar dat Heidi-Lene al knikkende aangedui het dat sy kon voel hoe Elze-Marie aan haar linkerhand druk. Heidi-Lene kon Sondag, met haar broer Gerad se besoek, niks voel toe hy haar linkerhand ‘n drukkie gegee het nie. Elze-Marie het ook oor Heidi-Lene se linkerbeen gevee, wat sy ook gevoel het. So met die besoek het Heidi-Lene ook aangedui dat sy al smag na ‘n stukkie vleis en ‘n bietjie sushi.

Heidi-Lene se dokters was teen Dinsdag baie hoopvol dat Heidi-Lene binnekort weer op haar eie sal kan asemhaal.

Minister of Police again ordered to pay by court

Extended hours to inspect new roll Municipal News

With the period for public in­ spection of the new 2018 to 2023 valuation roll for the Makhado Municipality drawing to a close, the municipality on Tuesday announced that they will extend their office hours to weekends to allow the public extra time to inspect the roll.

According to municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi, members of the public can now also inspect to roll over weekends. This can be done on Saturday, 14 April, and Sunday, 15 April, as well as Saturday, 21 April, and Sunday, 22 April, from 08:00 until 14:00. “Members of

the public can inspect the valuation roll at office C027 and at all our regional offices. Objection forms should be returned at the municipality offices on or before 4 May 2018,” said Bobodi.

Residents also have the option of inspecting the roll online at the municipality’s website, www. makhado.gov.za. Some users were, however, left frustrated earlier when being met with a “site is under construction” message.

The newspaper received numerous complaints regarding this on Monday. By Tuesday morning, the site was still offline.

In response to a media enquiry, Bobodi indicated that they were

experiencing technical problems with the site, but are working towards a solution. By Tuesday afternoon, the site was up and running again.

For the umpteenth time, the Minister of Police will have to fork out thousands to pay for damages after the police in Musina unlawfully detained a man.

The North Gauteng Court ruled in favour of Mr Given Muleya in February this year.

Munyai’s case stems from an incident more than four years ago, when he was kept in custody for longer than the prescribed 48 hours. On Saturday, 1 March 2014, Muleya and another man were placed in police custody - ironically enough initially for their own protection.

According to Muleya he was in front of a local tavern, when the police arrived with members of the Youth Against Crime group. He testified that as he was about to leave, somebody told him that the police are calling for him. When he walked over, Muleya testified that he was slapped through the face by a Const Motamaro. Muleya further testified that the police started assaulting him by kicking him and by hitting him with sjamboks. He was, however, not sure whether it was the police or members of the community who assaulted him, because at one stage he covered his face with his arms while he was being assaulted. Muleya denied that he ever pointed an airgun at anybody.

Testifying for the police and in his own defence, W/O Mashulu Mathobo told the court that on the specific day, members of the community street patrols informed the police of two men being assaulted outside a local tavern. He testified that Muleya was one of the men being assaulted. He then took Muleya and the other man and placed them in in the back of his police van with the intention to take them to the Musina police station for their own safety.

Mathobo testified that, while in the back of the van, a community member on the outside, De Bruin Shibambo, insisted that Muleya was pointing at him

with an airgun. This then resulted in Muleya being charged, after Shibambo had given a statement and laid a charge against him. Unfortunately, Muleya was not given the option to pay bail and he was held in custody over the weekend and only released the following Monday when his case was struck from the court role.

Muleya approached Mr Hennie Erwee, a local attorney from Musina, to sue the Minister of Police, for his wrongful arrest and assault.

In his 19 February ruling, Judge J Strydom said that he had to dismiss the claim of assault as Muleya’s version of the events was highly improbable.

Judge Strydom was impressed by Mathobo’s evidence, saying that there was nothing to cast doubt on the veracity concerning the actual incident and subsequent events. The judge believed Mathobo’s account that he had to intervene to prevent Muleya and the second man getting assaulted by other members of the community.

As for placing Muleya under arrest, Judge Strydom said that Mathobo applied his discretion objectively in so far that he had a valid suspicion that an offence, the pointing of an airgun, was committed.

“I am also of the view that the suspicion rested on reasonable grounds,” Strydom further added in his verdict. He further explained that Muleya failed to proof Mathobo exercised his discretion in an improper or unlawful manner. Judge Strydom said that according to the Criminal Procedures Act (Act 51 of 1977), that a suspicion is regarded as reasonable despite there being insufficient evidence for a self-evident case. “I am of the view that the evidence of Mathobo revealed clearly that Muleya was pointed out by the complainant as the person who pointed him with an airgun,” said judge Strydom. The fact that Muleya was detained for more than the prescribed 48 hours was the main reason why judge Strydom endorsed Muleya’s claim of an unlawful arrest and that he should receive R200 000 in damages with costs.

NICD warns of more cases Health

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) last week stated that the outbreak-related cases of listeriosis will continue to be reported, despite the source of the outbreak being identified as ready-to-eat processed meat products manufactured at Enterprise Foods’ Polokwane production facility.

After identifying the source of the

outbreak, the Department of Health issued a recall of all implicated Enterprise products. In their latest situation report on the outbreak, dated 6 April, the NICD, however, indicated that more cases will be reported due to several reasons.

Among the reasons listed is the fact that the incubation period of listeriosis can be up to 70 days. “The implicated food products [also] have a long refrigeration shelf life, and it is possible that despite the recall some products were

not removed from retail/home settings, and consumption might occur,” said the NICD in the report. The report added that the possibility of cross-contamination of other types of foods in the retail or home setting may also result in additional cases.

According to the NICD, a total of 37 laboratory-confirmed cases were reported since the recall on 4 March. “The number of laboratory-confirmed cases per week are declining since the recall,” said the NICD. Of the 37 cases, 19 patients were interviewed of which 13 reported eating polony in the month prior to falling ill.

As at 3 April this year, a total of 999 laboratory-confirmed listeriosis cases had been reported to NICD since 1 January 2017. “Outcome data is now available for 69% (689/999) of cases, of which 28% (191/689) died,” said the NICD. Where age was reported (973 of the cases), ages range from birth to 93 years (median 18 years) and 42% (412/973) are neonates aged 28 days and younger. Of neonatal cases, 96% (396/412) had early-onset disease (birth up to six days).

Females account for 56% (542/967) of cases where gender was reported, and most cases have been reported from Gauteng Province (59% - 586/999) followed by Western Cape (12% - 123/999) and KwaZulu-Natal (7% - 72/999) provinces.

According to the NICD, cases have been diagnosed in both public (64% - 644/999) and private (36% - 355/999) healthcare sectors. “A total of 547 clinical Listeria monocytogenes isolates have undergone whole genome sequencing since 1 January 2017. Of these, 92% (502/547) are the sequence type 6 (ST6) outbreak strain,” said the NICD.

FOOD, WINE AND BEER FESTIVAL The annual Haenerts-

burg Food, Wine and Beer Festival will this year take place on the weekend of 28 and 29 April.

This popular festival is again hosted in the Haenertsburg Village by the Magoebaskloof Tourism Association. There will be live music on both Saturday and Sunday with lots of food and good entertainment. The entrance fee into the festival grounds will be R20 per adult.

A branded wine tasting glass will be on sale for R35 and this includes a booklet for 25 wine tastings from any of the participating wine estates. Should you want to taste more wine there will be booklets for sale at R15 each for another 25 tastings.

The festival this year will be placing a bigger emphasis on good healthy food, food products and hand-crafted beers, gins and liqueurs.

Zwakala Brewery, Keith and his Blikskottel Mampoer, Qualito, Mark Dando and new participant, Flowstone Gin, will be on hand to lead you astray.

Approximately 15 to 20 wine estates will be ready to add some class to the festival with wine tasting. Wine estates will include KWV, Springfield, Zevenwacht, Alvi’s Drift, The Goose, Highlands Road, Namaqua, Vondeling and many others.

As an added extra there will be a classic car show on Sunday, 29 April, hosted by the Limpopo Classic Car Club. Cars and their owners from as far as Louis Trichardt will be showcasing their priced possessions.

Municipality has never stopped sending out monthly accounts

The Musina Municipality has denied claims by local Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Ernest Makatu that the municipality has stopped sending out municipal accounts to residents.

Makatu issued a statement last week wherein he claims that more than 1 000 monthly municipal accounts were found in a rubbish bin adjacent to the municipal toilets during an investigation. “The investigation comes after the residents’ outcry during the DA’s door-to-door campaign regarding the non-delivery of their municipal accounts by the municipality on time. The municipality has stopped delivering these municipal accounts statements to the residents for over a year without any valid reason,” said Makatu in an official DA statement.

to estimate their accounts when they have to pay their monthly bills which makes it impossible for them to budget accordingly, due to the fluctuating water and electricity bills. “It is clear that municipal officials must be held accountable for this illegal dumping, instead of initiating plans to deliver them to the relevant addresses for the residents to get their statements,” said Makatu.

Municipal spokesperson Mr Wilson Dzebu, however, this week refuted the DA’s claims.

“The municipality did not and has never stopped sending out monthly accounts,” said Dzebu. He, however, indicated that they did at one stage experience a delay in

sending out the accounts between August and November 2017 due to technical challenges encountered with the implementation of the new financial system. In cases where they are unable to physically deliver a resident’s monthly statement, Dzebu said that they have alternatives in place.

“We also have emails as an alternative system for those who have registered their email addresses with the municipality,” said Dzebu.

Coming back to Makatu’s claim about the more than 1 000 municipal account they found dumped, Dzebu said: “We cannot confirm if the accounts were dumped, as accounts are sent to the post office for delivery after printing.”

Die o.13-netbalspan het vanaf 1 tot 3 April aan ‘n toernooi by Swartkloof, naby Bela-Bela, deelgeneem. Hulle neem deel aan vier wedstryde en behaal ‘n algeheel sesde plek. Die eerste rugbyspan het ook hulle rugbyvernuf op die proef gaan stel tydens ‘n rugbykamp, Camp Discovery, wat vanaf 28 tot 31 Maart aangebied is. Afgeneem saam met die onderskeie spanne is hulle afrigters me.

Ek is ... die Weg, die Waarheid en die lewe “Een ding weet ek ...”

ohannes 9:25. “Een ding weet ek: dat ek blind was en nou sien ek.”

Iemand wat seker is van sy saak en sy eie identiteit is baie gelukkig. Maar wanneer dit gaan oor ‘n verhouding met God en die ewige dinge, ag baie min mense dit van genoeg waarde om doodseker te maak dat hulle waarlik gered is. Die apostel Johannes spreek Gajus so aan: “Ek wens dat dit met jou in alles goed mag gaan en dat jy gesond is, soos dit met jou siel goed gaan.” (3 Joh. 1:2).

Die blindgebore man vir wie Jesus van sy blindheid genees het, pas nadat Hy in Joh. 8:12 uitgeroep het: “Ek is die LIG van die wêreld”, het nie die voorreg gehad om vir Jesus dadelik te sien toe hy by die bad van Siloam siende geword het nie. Dit was nie toevallig dat Jesus hom ná sy uitbanning uit die sinagoge weer gekry het, hom toe bemoedig het en Homself lewend, as die Seun van God, aan hom voorgestel het nie.

Vanaf die oomblik dat hy kon sien, het hy daarna gesmag om dié Jesus wie se stem hy nog net een keer gehoor het, van wie hy met toenemende vrymoedigheid getuig het, self te sien. Die klimaks van sy belydenis was die uitroep: “Ek glo Here”. Toe het hy Jesus as God aanbid.

Die dors na God Self is die hoogste vorm van dors wat altyd in die hart van elke wedergebore siel, brandend behoort te bly.

Aanbid God met ‘n dankbare hart vir die genesing van jou geestelike blindheid.

Bo: Laerskool Messina het onlangs besluit om weer hul sko­lier­patrollie in te stel. Toenemende ver­ keers­volumes veral in die middae wanneer die skool uitkom, het hulle tot hierdie stap genoodsaak.

Die skool het hul dank uit­gespreek teenoor die Departement van Vervoer wat die skolierpatrollie se klere geborg het. Jare gelede het De Beers ook klere geborg wat vandag nog gebruik word.

Nog ‘n wen vir sterkman Leon op sy kerfstok Deur Andries van Zyl

Plaaslike sterkman Leon le Roux het Saterdag, 7 April, weer bietjie “gewigte” gaan rondgooi tydens sy deelname aan ‘n sterkmankompetisie

by Clearwater Mazda in Roodepoort.

Die 45-jarige sersant-majoor van Lugmagbasis Makhado buite Louis Trichardt het egter nie net deelgeneem nie, hy het ook presteer.

Die kompetisie, aangebied deur die African Strongman Union, het ook gedien as kwalifiserende rondte vir die jaarlikse Arnold Classic Africa sterkmankompetisie vanaf 18 tot 20 Mei in die Sandton Konferensiesentrum.

Le Roux het deelgeneem in die onder 105 kg meesters-afdeling. “Tussen agt atlete het ek algeheel vierde geëindig en eerste in my klas,” het Le Roux Woensdag aan die Zoutpansberger gesê.

Soos gewoonlik was die kompetisie nie kinderspeletjies nie. “Ons het begin met die kar deadlift wat 270 kg was. Ek kon dit nie lig nie,” het Le Roux gesê.

Dinge het egter daarna heelwat beter verloop vir Le Roux. “Daarna was die yoke van 375 kg en ek

eindig eerste. Toe was dit die fronthold van 130 kg om te kyk hoe lank jy kan vashou met een hand om jou greep te toets. Ek het 51 sekondes gestaan wat eerste in my groep was,” het Le Roux gesê.

Volgens op die “spyskaart” was ‘n 340 kg buiteband wat Le Roux vyf keer gat-oor-kop moes flip, waarna hy ‘n 110 kg sandsak teen tyd oor 20 meter moes dra. “My tyd was die beste en ek wen die item,” het Le Roux gesê.

Le Roux het so goed presteer dat dit hom weer ‘n eerste plek in sy klas besorg het. Van sy tye was so goed, dat hy selfs outjies in die ope klas uitgestof het. Die beste nuus vir hom is egter dat hy gekwalifiseer het vir deelname aan die Arnold Classic Africa in Mei. “Ek sien uit na die kompetisie omdat dit ‘n internasionale kompetisie is en ek wil sien hoe ons teen die res van Afrika kompeteer,” het Le Roux gesê.

Le Roux het na afloop van die naweek se kompetisie sy dank uitgespreek teenoor almal wat hom so getrou ondersteun, veral sy vrou. “My vrou Marihan is my grootste fan en haar ondersteuning en bystand in my sport is awesome. Sy is ‘n ware steunpilaar,” het Le Roux gesê.

Die eerste item waaraan Le Roux moes deelneem was ook die moeilikste vir hom. Hy kon net nie daarin slaag om die gewig van 270 kg in die kar deadlift te lig nie. Foto verskaf.

Johan Cronjé het verlede Woensdag, 4 April, iets reggekry wat bitter min plaaslike gholfspelers mee kan spog. Hy het ‘n volmaakte kolhou geslaan op die 15de putjie, ‘n kort gat oor 147 m, by die Soutpansberg Gholfklub. “Ek het dit nie verwag nie, alhoewel mens maar altyd vir die gaatjie mik,” het Johan gesê. Hy was ook bly dat hy die kolhou Woensdag geslaan het, omdat daar nie baie spelers op die veld was nie. Tradisie bepaal dat die persoon wat ‘n volmaakte kolhou slaan, vir alle spelers na die tyd ‘n drankie in die kroeg moet koop. “Gelukkig vir my was dit ‘n goedkoop rondte,” het Johan gelag. Pieter Pretorius het die afgelope naweek deelgeneem aan die Mall of the Northmaraton, wat ook ‘n kwalifiserende wedren vir vanjaar se Comrades is. Hy voltooi die 42.2km in drie ure 34 minute.

Levubu-inwoner, CP van Wyk, het vanjaar weereens die Soutpansberg trots gemaak tydens sy en spanmaat Luke Maga se deelname aan die jaarlike Cape Epic bergfietswedren vanaf 18 tot 25 Maart.

CP, wat tans studeer aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch, is in Februarie genader deur ‘n fietswinkel in Stellenbosch wat namens Luke, ‘n Australiër, op soek was na ‘n spanmaat om saam die Cape Epic te ry.

Gelukkig vir CP was hy hierdie jaar voorbereid sou so ‘n geleentheid hom weer voordoen en hy het opgewonde ingestem. Vir beide CP en Luke sou dit hul tweede deelname aan die Epic wees, nadat hulle verlede jaar ook deelgeneem het.

CP en Luke het deelgeneem as span Coffeeworks, ‘n koffiewinkel van die Specialized fietsrywinkel in Stellenbosch. Hulle was een van meer as 600 spanne wat vanjaar ingeskryf het vir die Cape Epic met dié moordende wedren wat oor sowat 700 km

Luke is 37 jaar oud, werk voltyds, en nie presies in dieselfde kategorie as CP nie, dus was hierdie jaar se uitdaging vir CP om die beste uit sy maat te haal sonder om hom uit te brand. Die spanwerk het hulle goed reggekry. Die twee het baie goed oor die weg gekom, mekaar ongelooflik ondersteun en die dinamika tussen hulle was duidelik sigbaar.

Die eerste dag is die prologue beslis met CP en Luke wat algeheel 178ste eindig en 111de in die mans-kategorie. Dit is gevolg deur sewe skofte wat oor die volgende sewe dae beslis is. Skof 1 voltooi die twee in die 116de posisie (79ste in hul kategorie), waarna hulle die volgende ses skofte telkens klaarmaak onder die algehele top 100 ryers.

Ná ‘n moordende agt dae se sweet, eindig CP en Luke die Cape Epic in ‘n algehele 80ste plek en ‘n 55ste plek in hul ouderdomskategorie – glad nie sleg vir ‘n mannetjie van Levubu wat ‘n Aussie moet “dra” nie!

CP het gesê hy het die ervaring ongelooflik baie geniet en elke dag met ‘n groot glimlag klaargemaak. Hy was ook buitengewoon geseënd met geen pap bande of valle nie.

Oor hoekom CP ingeskryf het vir die Cape Epic, sê dié beskeie ryer van Levubu: “Dit was nog altyd my droom – dit is die grootste skof-wedren ter wêreld.” Vir Luke het dit ook gegaan oor die uitdaging. “Dit sal ‘n uitdaging wees, maar ons is hier om nie net deel te neem nie, maar om die moeilikste bergfietswedren op die wêreld se sportkalender te voltooi,” het Luke gesê.
